Antelope Canyon Tours

I visited the canyon for the second time with these folks, just as good if not better. My in-laws and wife were just as surprised as I was in 2014 (My first visit) at how beautiful the canyon was and how wonderful the service is. Would recommend, and props to our Tour Guide Rosie, you rock!

The tour through the Antelope Canyon is something you will never forget, pictures don't do it justice, as it is hard to catch the raw beauty before you. Our tour guide Rick was great, informative and help with capturing the best pictures possible.

We had a wonderful tour with Rosie. We took a morning tour in hopes of avoiding the crowds. It worked out perfectly. Rosie was informative and warm. She helped us get best photos, gave us interesting facts about the Navajo and the canyon, and we were not rushed through.

I went with a couple of friends from college, tour guide was nice, she explained many photographic opportunities, she was very knowledgable, weather was nice, we all loved the experience.

Our guide made our trip so interesting and fun. He was very knowledgeable and an excellent photographer. He showed us the best spots for pictures and advised us on the best camera settings. This trip is a "must" for every traveler lucky enough to see this part of the country. I highly recommend Antelope Canyon Tours!

Our tour was amazing. I highly recommend this tour if you are in Page. The colors of the Sandstone is truly unforgettable. The guides are very knowledgeable and Sonny was very helpful in making sure we had taken the best photo possible. Definitely a must-see!

Planning Your Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell Trip

Posted November 28, 2019 by Navajo Tours Team in News , Travel Information

antelope canyon

If you are intrigued by the natural wonders of the American Southwest, you might be considering a visit to two of Arizona’s most famous sights, Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell. If you are having a hard time choosing which to explore, you may be happily surprised to learn that both are located very close to each other in the Page, Arizona area. Read on to learn more about these two natural wonders and how you can plan to visit both at once, either on the same day or during the same trip.

World-Famous Sights

Antelope Canyon is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. It is a famous canyon made up of two slot canyons that are the most-photographed as well as the most-visited in the American Southwest. Upper Antelope Canyon is the more well-known of Antelope’s two slot canyons, due to its beautiful summer light beams and ease of access. It also provides gorgeous changing lights on its walls during the canyon off-season between October and mid-March.

Lake Powell straddles the Utah-Arizona border and is a reservoir located on the Colorado River. While some may think of it as a Utah lake, since most of it is located there, a portion of Lake Powell is actually located off of Page, Arizona. Many visitors head to Wahweap Marina to see the lake or complete a boat tour. Wahweap is actually only about 22 minutes away from Antelope Canyon, meaning that you can easily see both Antelope and Lake Powell during the same trip.

Planning Your Schedule

If you plan to visit Antelope and Lake Powell on the same day, you will have to commit to a fairly tight schedule. You want to aim for an Upper Antelope tour that takes place between 11 am and 1:30 pm if you are traveling during the summer, as this is when the lights shine brightest. You may have time after your tour to take a boat tour or see Lake Powell, but it may be somewhat late by the time your Antelope tour ends and your time may be better served by getting some food to eat and finding shelter for the night. If you are not worried about seeing the lights at their brightest or are visiting during the off-season, you may find that your schedule has more flexibility.

If you decide to give yourself a full day to enjoy Lake Powell, you will be able to spend more time enjoying its beauty without worrying about rushing around and watching the clock. Putting it off for a second day will also allow you to enjoy Antelope Canyon more thoroughly. Remember that tour times are not typically exact, either, making it even harder to cram two into one day. If you are pressed for time, however, it is possible to see and enjoy both sights on the same day and have a memorable experience. You can also visit Lake Powell on your first day and Antelope on your second, if you prefer.

Local Lodging Options

If you should decide that you want to stay overnight so you can enjoy both Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell to the fullest extent, there are a number of high-quality lodging options to choose from. If you want to go the luxurious route, there are a variety of wonderful hotels that you can stay at. Many near Antelope Canyon actually overlook Lake Powell, so you can enjoy its natural beauty while you rest comfortably.

If you are a nature lover and want to immerse yourself in the desert wonder of the Page area, consider one of the local campsites available for a variety of tastes. Some sites are designed for managed camping, while others even cater to off-roaders. If you want to visit Lake Powell from your campsite, there are many options that allow you to do so, as they are located near the water.

Are you ready to finish planning your exciting trip by booking your Upper Antelope tour? Antelope Canyon Navajo Tours does not take prepayments — you pay when you arrive — and offers discounts for young children. Antelope Canyon's narrow, sand-swept walls

A Guide to Visiting Antelope Canyon the 'Right Way'

Antelope Canyon's otherworldly beauty makes it one of the most highly sought after destinations in the world, and access to this natural marvel is granted only with a Navajo guide. Here, we step you through the process of how to visit this astonishing place.

Antelope Canyon is like no other spot on earth. At midday, when the sun is shining, shafts of light cut into the canyon, illuminating the narrow orange and gold sandstone walls. The effect is almost surreal, and photographers from around the globe come to capture its beauty.

However, visiting Antelope Canyon isn't as simple as driving to a parking lot and walking up to the entrance. But we're here to help show you the ropes, from how to book a Navajo guide to tips on photographing the shifting light.

Getting to Antelope Canyon

Created by millions of years of erosion, Antelope Canyon is part of the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park , located 10 minutes east of Page , near the Arizona-Utah border. Although it is one slot canyon, there are two points within the park that you can visit: Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon.

Upper Antelope Canyon is at ground level, has less than a 2% incline and is the more popular entrance.

Lower Antelope Canyon requires walking down (and up) several flights of stairs and ladders.

From Phoenix, the drive north to Antelope Canyon is approximately four-and-a-half hours. Once there, your tours may last up to two hours when you figure in parking, the journey there and actual time spent in the canyons. For this reason, many people opt to stay overnight at least one evening (see "Where to stay").

Most tours begin in Page or at the park's entrance off Highway 98. Arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Antelope Canyon is open year-round; however, most people will try to visit mid-day during weekends from March through October, when the light shafts appear. Crowds will be at their peak then, which may make it difficult to snap that perfect shot Find better rates, fewer people and still amazing views during the off-season from November through late February, and especially in January. Though uncommon, Antelope Canyon may close during days of heavy rain or snow. This is more likely to happen from June to September, during Arizona's monsoon season.

What you'll need

You'll also need a prior reservation with an authorized Navajo guide to visit either Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon. Book online before you visit since tours can sell out weeks in advance. Additionally, you'll need:

  • A permit, though this is usually covered in your guide's fee (see below).
  • Good walking shoes, especially if visiting Lower Antelope Canyon.
  • See "What to bring" below for more specific items.

What it costs

Until recently, the cost varied significantly depending on whether you booked a sightseeing or photography tour. The tribe has reduced the availability of photography tours, however, because they frequently caused bottlenecks by allowing photographers to bring their tripod and spend more time setting up shots. Most 90-minute tours of Upper Antelope Canyon cost between $50 and $90 (slightly less for children), although some operators offer discounts on their early bird and last chance tours. Hour-long tours of Lower Antelope Canyon cost $40, and up to $80 for deluxe options. The price generally—but not always—includes taxes and the $8 Navajo permit fee. (Check with your tour company if you have any questions about additional fees.)

What to bring

Do: Wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes and layered clothing. Apply plenty of sunscreen, even in winter. Bring a hat or handkerchief for protection from the sand, and if you wear contact lenses, consider opting for eyeglasses instead. You are allowed to bring one bottle of water (and we highly recommend you do). Just make sure you take it out with you after the tour. Don't: Bring bags, purses, fanny packs, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, food and drinks—all are prohibited in the canyon.

There are no trash cans and no bathrooms in the canyon.

The trip into the canyon

Whether you start in Page or at the park's entrance, be prepared to ride in a four-wheel-drive vehicle through a sandy riverbed to the canyon. Each vehicle has a Navajo guide that ushers the group through, shares information about the formations and even helps stage some photos, including sand cascading over a rock ledge. Sand is everywhere. On windy days, dust can blow into your nose, mouth and ears. If you have a DSLR camera, cover it when you are not using it (a plastic shower cap does the trick) and never change lenses inside the canyon.

A Guide to Visiting Antelope Canyon the 'Right Way'

Photography tips

It's more challenging to photograph Antelope Canyon without a tripod, but you can still take amazing images. With a DSLR, opt for a high ISO setting and use a wide aperture. To photograph the beams of light, book a tour that will be in the canyon between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., May through October. Don't forget to look up, especially when the canyon is crowded. Several tour operators, such as Horseshoe Bend Slot Canyon Tours , also offer tours of nearby, nearly-as-spectacular canyons. Avid photographers may want to consider booking one of these tours, too. Simply inquire when booking.

Where to stay

Though hardly remote by some Arizona standards, Antelope Canyon is still considered a lengthy drive and hike for many areas of the state. Additionally, there are quite a few other amazing sites to see nearby— Horseshoe Bend , White Pocket and the Vermilion Cliffs , and Lake Powell —that many people choose to stay at least one night to get the most from their trip. Hampton Inn and Suites Page - Lake Powell This national chain is among the area's newer properties and ranks high among past guests for its clean, comfortable rooms, friendly staff and free hot breakfast. The large parking lot is able to accommodate boats, buses and RVs. The Bear's Den B&B Owners "Bubba and Deb-B" operate this cozy three-room bed and breakfast in Page that's fully ADA-compliant. Amenities include pillowtop mattresses, a small fridge and microwave, private bathrooms, and plenty of bear decor. Shash Dine' Eco-Retreat For a truly unique stay, book a Najavo hogan or sheepherder wagon at this sustainable glamping campsite and B&B operated by Baya, a member of the Navajo Nation. You will stay on Navajo land in one of eight simple accommodations—no electricity or running water, but fresh drinking water—with nothing but views for miles. Lake Powell Resort If a visit to Lake Powell and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is on your list, you can't get closer than a stay at this resort located at Wahweap Marina in Page. Hotel guests can book a boat tour, dinner cruise or rent their own powerboat for an unforgettable day on the water.

Nearby slot canyons

Antelope Canyon tours sometimes sell out, especially during high season. If tours aren’t available when you want to go, consider booking a tour of one of these slot canyons near Page.

Canyon X: Named for the point where its walls create an “X” overhead, this canyon sees far fewer visitors than Antelope Canyon but is equally breathtaking. Book a tour with the property’s owners, Taadidiin Tours .

Cardiac Canyon: Taadidiin Tours also offers private treks through Cardiac Canyon. While it requires some scrambling to see the 2.5-mile canyon’s sights, adventurers are rewarded with solitude unavailable in Antelope Canyon.

Mountain Sheep Canyon: Several companies, such as Black Streak Canyon Tours , guide groups through this off-the-beaten-path canyon with its undulating sandstone walls. Be prepared for a hike to its entrance.

Rattlesnake and Owl Canyons: Often toured together, these canyons provide dramatically different experiences. While Rattlesnake twists and turns, Owl has open areas. Book tours through companies like Adventurous Antelope Canyon Tours and Shun’Diin Canyon Tours.

Leave no trace

Antelope Canyon and the Navajo Nation lands are special places whose breathtaking beauty and natural habitats for local wildlife are worth preserving. Adhere to the Leave No Trace principles as much as you possibly can so future visitors may continue to enjoy.

There are plenty of slot canyons scattered across the Southwest but Antelope Canyon is arguably one of the most popular to visit. Its’ tall walls, narrow passages, and vibrant colors make it one of the most sought after for photographers and travelers from all over the world.

If you’re looking to miss the crowds and experience the canyon a different way then kayak Antelope Canyon from Lake Powell! This all day adventure allows you to kayak through part of the canyon, dock your kayak where the water ends, and hike into it on foot.

This guide covers how to get to Antelope Canyon from Lake Powell, safety considerations, and extra things to consider so you have a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Kayaking Antelope Canyon.

About Antelope Canyon

First let’s get aquatinted with the rich history of the canyon itself. Antelope Canyon is located in Page, Arizona and is categorized as two parts- an Upper Canyon and Lower Canyon. It sits on land that belongs to the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation. They made Antelope Canyon a Tribal Park in 1977 and have been giving tours since.

Antelope Canyon is known as “the place where water runs through rocks” by the Navajo Nation because that is essentially how it was formed. Water ran through the sandstone for hundreds of years carving its way to form the shapes we see today. The walls of the slot canyon rise up to 120 feet high in some parts!

If you enter the slot canyon from Lake Powell it isn’t likely that you’ll get far enough to see views much like you would from the tours. The extremely unique part of the canyon is reserved for the Navajo tours. Nonetheless it still is worth it because you do get that slot canyon experience, even from on the water.

Please Leave No Trace!

Since we’ll be on tribal land please continue to be very considerate and practice the leave no trace principles. This especially means no carving into rock and packing out what you pack in.

Adventure Logistics + Safety

To safely reach Antelope Canyon via kayak a level of preparation needs to be taken. Kayaking to Antelope Canyon is not a last minute adventure. It can be difficult to secure kayak rentals during the busy season, you need to be mindful of any chances of rain, and the wake created by boats and jet skis is very rough.

I’ve listed all of the details below I feel are important to consider before starting your adventure!

Best Time To Kayak Antelope Canyon

Kayak Antelope Canyon In Lake Powell.

I think we can agree that kayaking is most enjoyable during great weather. Late summer and early fall are the busiest, yet best times to be out on the water at Lake Powell.

Why? Because the outside temperatures are warm and the water has had time to warm up over time. During winter and spring the water is extremely cold which means the risk of getting hypothermia is high.

If you don’t care about the temperature and aren’t going to swim during your adventure I’ve heard that winter is a great time to kayak Antelope Canyon. There are less people and boats which means no crowds or wake.

The time of year you go just depends on your personal preferences. Keep in mind that if you don’t have your own kayaks you may have difficulty securing a rental during offseason. The group who told me they went in January said they were able to find ONE rental who was willing to operate still!

Safety Considerations

  • Have a life jacket – #1 most important thing is to have a life jacket with you. It does not matter how good of a swimmer you are- accidents happen. The wake from Antelope Marina to Antelope Canyon can be very rough if it is windy or other boats and jet skis are on the lake.
  • Check the weather – this is essential to do day of! If any rain is in the forecast do not kayak to Antelope Canyon. You never want to be in a slot canyon with it raining up to a mile away and yes, they do get flash floods here.
  • Tell someone your plans – tell someone where you plan on going and arriving back to shore.

Tips For Kayaking Antelope Canyon

  • Start early in the day such as 8 a.m. to try to make it back before the late afternoon wind and weather changes roll in (during fall and summer).
  • You can paddle board to Antelope Canyon but I’d think twice if it is going to be windy out or a busy day on the lake. The wake can get so big I cannot imagine being on a board during that. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you kayakers were getting pushed up against and stuck on the rock walls.
  • I don’t see this adventure as a beginner one. It is too far and can get too strenuous for someone who hasn’t kayaked before. Worst case just kayak to the entrance of the slot and back!
  • Kids should be able to kayak here just fine if they are experienced and/or sharing a kayak with an adult.
  • Bring a snack or pack a lunch!

CAUTION: It is extremely dangerous to be inside a slot canyon during a rainstorm. No matter if you are hiking or on the water, you’ll want to check the weather in and around Page, AZ for it can rain elsewhere and still flood down to Antelope Canyon.

Getting Kayak Rentals

If you have your own kayaks to bring, great! But if you need rentals you’re in luck because there are several places in the area you can rent from. I do suggest booking as far ahead in advance as possible because they get completely booked during peak seasons.

I’ve had a great experience renting from WazSUP Kayaks. Bill was extremely accommodating to our last minute rentals and for an extra fee he even dropped off our kayaks and picked them up for us at the marina. Bill gave us directions to Antelope Canyon, some tips, and provided us with life jackets and paddles also. Highly recommend!

What To Pack For Kayaking Antelope Canyon

Below are some things I found helpful to pack during my adventure. I chose to take my hiking pack with me and store everything inside.

  • Life Jacket
  • Hat, sunglasses, and/or sunscreen
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • 2L of water
  • Layers over swimsuit
  • Waterproof shoes

How To Kayak Antelope Canyon From Lake Powell

Kayak Antelope Canyon.

FINALLY what you’ve been waiting for- the low down on the kayaking adventure. Below are maps giving you an overview of where you’ll be going. The first map shows you where you’ll be embarking on your adventure in comparison to Page, Arizona.

Where you’ll begin your adventure: Antelope Point Launch Ramp.

  • Kayaking Distance | Roughly 7 miles RT
  • Time | Typically 5-6 hours
  • Entry Fees | $30 per car for the day unless you have the America The Beautiful pass!
  • Parking | Free and available up the hill from the ramp.

Getting to Antelope Canyon

The second map shows you the route from the Antelope Point Launch Ramp to Antelope Canyon. It is roughly 1 mile from the ramp to the entrance of the canyon.

The entrance will be the first on your left and marked so it is easy to see. Once you start kayaking down the canyon you’ll just go as far as the water takes you, dock your kayak on the sand bar, and begin hiking!

How to kayak to Antelope Canyon

When my group kayaked Antelope Canyon we got a late start and it was on a stormy day, which is not recommended. There were plenty of other people out on the water at the same time so we kept a very close eye on the weather and played it by ear the entire time.

It was sunny and beautiful when we first launched from the Antelope Point Launch Ramp and headed towards the canyon. The wake wasn’t too terrible at this time so it was relaxing being able to just paddle and watch people jumping from the rocks.

Kayaking Antelope Canyon.

After about a mile we reached the entrance to Antelope Canyon. It was easy to spot because the entrance is wide and the first left turn you can take from the launch point. The sign at the entrance helped too!

Boats and jet skis can make it into the canyon also but are supposed to go 5 miles per hour because it is a no-wake zone. Everyone we encountered during our adventure obeyed, so hopefully they do for you too!

Kayak Antelope Canyon.

At first Antelope Canyon is wide and the rock walls are tall, but not towering over you. As you continue to kayak deeper into the canyon the walls gradually grow taller and narrower, enclosing in on you. At this point the stormy clouds started getting worse and we felt a few sprinkles. We took a chance to proceed since plenty of other people were too.

We didn’t want to stop paddling because it seemed like after each corner the views got better and better! Paddling as fast as we could through the canyon, we finally reached the end and were able to dock our kayaks with the others.

Kayak Antelope Canyon.

It was decided that we’d walk about 1/2 mile into the canyon then turn back since we weren’t sure about the weather. We took our life jackets with us just to be safe. Again, we didn’t want to stop because the views kept getting better and better! The further you travel up the canyon the more enclosed it becomes.

You can hike for miles, almost up to the point where they have Antelope Canyon blocked off for tours. I can only imagine the slot canyon gets more interesting the further you go. If you do kayak Antelope Canyon and proceed to hike, I suggest leaving plenty of time for hiking a couple miles in!

Hiking Antelope Canyon.

Once we made it back to our kayaks it did start sprinkling enough to the point where we were getting wet. We paddled as hard and as fast as we could to get out of the canyon, but people were still docking and hiking as we were leaving! I’m glad we left when we did, though, because the afternoon weather only got worse.

Kayaking the wake area back to the launch ramp was tough with the wind and waves from boats combined. The best I can compare it to would be kayaking on an ocean with waves. They were strong and kept turning us in different directions. People were getting pushed up against the rocks on the side.

My group and I just kept paddling as best as we could through the waves all the way back to the launch ramp. It was exhilarating and frightening at the same time because I didn’t want to tip over, but I always love a challenge!

Things To Do Near Antelope Canyon

Horseshoe bend.

Since you’ll be in the area, a stop by Horseshoe Bend is a must! Its just a short 1.5 mile round trip walk from the parking lot to the peer down at the Colorado River where it carved out a horseshoe shape in the canyon.

Recently they’ve revamped the area and are now charging an entry fee of $10. There is more organization to the parking lot with the addition of vault toilets and a path to the viewing point over Horseshoe Bend.

Watching the sunset here is bucket-list worthy!

Lone Rock Beach Campground

Whether you want to camp on the beach or post up for a day and play in the water, Lone Rock Beach is a fun place to be during the hot months. Camping is permitted just about anywhere in the park, even right at the waters edge! It is recommended to have a 4×4 vehicle if you want to drive down to the water, but if you don’t have one you can park up by the restrooms and walk down.

Lake Powell Dispersed Camping

If you’re looking to camp in the area you can also try dispersed camping anywhere in the Glen Canyon Recreational Area. One of the most beautiful points is Alstrom Point. You’ll need a high clearance 4X4 vehicle to access this remote location and know how to drive on some rough back roads. But the sunrise here is worth every bump!

To learn more about camping in the area click here.

Final Thoughts On Kayaking Antelope Canyon

I’ve visited Antelope Canyon three times- twice to take the walking tours, and once to kayak the canyon. To me, kayaking Antelope Canyon was the most thrilling way to experience it! Being able to be out on the water and hike a portion of the slot canyon seemed like the best of both worlds.

Even though the wake was rough and somewhat frightening on the way back, I still want to go back and kayak it again. Except next time I’ll be sure to have better weather and enough time to hike deeper into it!

As always, please be considerate of the environment so we can keep enjoying it and remember  to leave no trace.

Hi Kara! Great article. I am going to the Grand Canyon at the end of May. I am torn between kayaking and doing the Upper Antelope Guided tour. You said that you have been here 3 times. Which would you suggest? Or would you do both? Kayak and do the guided tour? Thanks!

' src=

Hi Susie! I’ll always suggest both! I think it is great to get two different experiences. However if you’re tight on time or funds and had to choose 1, I’d choose kayaking. Just make sure you hike far enough to get those slot canyon views (about 3 miles). In May the water will be very cold so that is always a risk too. We’re having a late winter this year so temps may not be warmed up by then either. Just something to consider if you prefer warmer weather 🙂

' src=

Would this be an ok adventure for first time kayakers?

Hi Chrissy, thanks for reading! If the first time kayakers are adults I think it would be okay for reaching the entrance of the Antelope Canyon and paddling in a little but not too far. To go all the way where the water ends and back to the marina is far for first time kayakers. Your arms will be tired from paddling! If you’re renting you could also think about a tandem kayak if you have a teenager with you or just want to split the load with another adult 🙂 Hope this helps. Regardless- Lake Powell is worth getting out on!

' src=

What do you think about doing this with kids? Ages 11 to 18.

Hi Paula! I don’t have much experience traveling with kids, so I don’t have the best judgement on the matter. I will say though, that if they aren’t experienced kayakers I’d be very weary of the adventure when there is a big wake. Rough waters combined with the distance makes for a tough adventure. The water level is extremely low right now, however, so the kayaking portion of the adventure may be even shorter right now. When I made my adventure every kayaker on the water was an adult, I did not see any kids that far back in the slots.

' src=

Wow, it looks so adventurous and just so far from civilization and noise! Just nature to enjoy. It seems like you had a great time:)

' src=

Those photos are amazing! I have never been there, but I love kayaking. I can’t wait to visit.

' src=

I have never done Kayaking. this is amazing! Thank you for sharing

' src=

Great post! I’ve always wanted to visit Arizona, and you’ve added on another idea for when I can travel again after Covid. Lake Powell sounds beautiful and a kayak trip would be amazing!

So glad I could help, Tanya! Hope you get to visit sooner than later 🙂

' src=

This area looks really lovely. Great article and thanks for the reminder of waterproof shoes. I always forget mine then end up wrecking my good walking shoes or going barefoot.

Thanks for reading, Nicole 🙂 Haha I use to have the same problem. And just got tired of having to take socks and shoes off…ew. So I wore my Chacos which are perfect for water adventures and to hike in.

' src=

Oh we love lake Powell! This is such a fun thing to do there! Great information for someone who has never been before!

Thank you Melanie! Lake Powell is pretty big and there are so many fun things to do around it 🙂 Glad to hear you’ve been there before!

This is awesome! I’m certainly going to put it on my list of to dos. I love to kayak and this scenery looks so peaceful!

Hi Stephanie, thanks for reading! If you love to kayak then you’ll love kayaking out on Lake Powell. Great views and major Southwest vibes!

These sections include the well-known Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons and the less frequented Canyon X and Secret Antelope Canyon.

Lake Powell Water Level

Lake Powell Water Level Report

The water level of Lake Powell is presently at a historic low. However, in 2023, we expect a considerable summer runoff from the Rockies, but in the meantime, let us enjoy the currently exposed, long-forgotten, and previously hidden body of water that is temporarily available for us to enjoy. This unprecedented low water level has resulted in longer slot canyons for hiking and taller canyon walls, making Lake Powell an even more remarkable experience for paddle-boarders and kayakers. Despite the altered launch areas, Lake Powell remains incredibly accessible for kayaks, paddle boards, and boats. Additionally, due to the closure of boat ramps, there is less motorboat traffic on the lake, making it an even better paddle experience. We offer hassle-free rentals, including setup, delivery, and pickup for you and your friends. So why wait? Make your way to Lake Powell today!

Enjoy Lake Powell Tours

Lake Powell Tours

Kayaking Lake Powell tours with Lower Antelope Canyon Tours are great adventures! It’s a fantastic chance to relax on the water or explore alcoves, overhangs, and cliffs. When the water is calm and the weather agreeable, dozens of boats can be found floating lazily atop the water. Fishermen enjoy the peace and calm while waiting for a bite. Fellow kayakers are friendly and polite. If you’re not used to kayaking, it can be a pleasant workout. When I first tried still-water kayaking, my arms were slightly sore the next day.

Pay Attention

Though the water isn’t brimming with fish, it seems to be well inhabited. You might be able to spot a few fish while paddling through the water or sitting still to observe the beautiful surroundings. If you find a nice little fishing hole that you would like to come back to, make a mental note of it and rent a kayak for yourself to use another time.

As someone who has a passion for learning about nature and ecosystems, I thoroughly enjoyed the unique geological history. I loved being able to kayak right up to the rock layers I wanted to look at. I was able to sit and ponder the mechanisms by which the layers formed. Ask your guide questions, and google the ones they cannot answer. There is something new to learn everywhere you look. Years of erosion carved the rock surrounding the lake, while the dam to the West of the town Page allowed the ancient depression to fill with water. This gives you Lake Powell and allows for your Lake Powell tours.

Kayaking Antelope Canyon: Everything You Need to Know

Looking for information about kayaking antelope canyon you’ve come to the right place.

Did you know you can actually kayak to Antelope Canyon and avoid going on one of the crazy crowded tours? Yes, you totally can!

On our most recent trip to Page, Arizona our favorite thing we did was kayaking to Antelope Canyon.

Because this isn’t a super well-known thing to do, figuring out the logistics of how to actually get to Antelope Canyon from Lake Powell can be a bit confusing.

But don’t worry, in this article, we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about how to kayak to Antelope Canyon !

Regular Tour vs. Kayaking Antelope Canyon

So you’re probably wondering, what is the difference between kayaking to Antelope Canyon or going on one of the tours to Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon?

There are quite a few noticeable differences, but overall, we think you should do both while visiting the area .

Even though kayaking Antelope Canyon is a unique way to visit the part of the canyon that is closest to Lake Powell, it’s not the same as seeing the upper parts of the slot canyon that are famous for the smooth, wavy, colorful walls.

Regular Antelope Canyon Tour

There are different sections of Antelope Canyon that you can visit, but the two most famous, Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon, are the most noteworthy parts of the slot canyon you can visit.

In the past 15 years, this slot canyon has become incredibly famous, and people travel from all over the world to experience the wonder these slot canyons hold.

But because of how famous they have become, the experience of walking through these slot canyons and having a serene experience has been diminished by the annoying crowds.

That’s why you’re probably looking for alternatives to visiting Antelope Canyon.

We would caution against this though, even though kayaking to the part of Antelope Canyon that empties into Lake Powell is incredible, it’s not even close to the same experience as Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon .

To avoid disappointment, we would 100% recommend doing both.

If you’re having a hard time figuring out which part of the canyon to visit, read more in our article about the difference between Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon .

There are also a ton of different tour operators that go to Antelope Canyon now as well. Check out our article all about the best tours to Antelope Canyon (and the exact one we went on & recommend!)

Psst! If you don’t want to read a full other article, this is the best Upper Antelope Canyon tour we went on and loved. Here is the best tour of Lower Antelope Canyon (that we also went on & loved.)

Kayaking to Antelope Canyon

Kayaking to Lower Antelope Canyon is more of an all-around experience rather than a chance to see Antelope Canyon without going on a tour.

Just the kayaking part on Lake Powell is a fun experience, and the hiking to the lower parts of Antelope Canyon is just the cherry on top.

We’ll explain more below about how to actually kayak and hike Antelope Canyon , so keep reading for the logistics.

But it’s important to know what to expect when kayaking to see Antelope Canyon.

Once you park your kayak and head out on your hike to see the canyon, it will start off as just a large canyon like the one you just kayaked through but without the water.

There are a few sections of the canyon that have a resemblance to the smooth, wavy walls like you would see in the photos of Upper or Lower Antelope, but those sections are pretty short.

Overall, you will still get to experience some sections of the canyon that resemble the Upper and Lower portions, but they are short and aren’t nearly as spectacular.

Our highlight of kayaking to Antelope Canyon was enjoying being out on Lake Powell , kayaking through the canyon that leads to Antelope Canyon, parking our kayaks, and enjoying a swim in the crystal clear, blue waters of Lake Powell.

So we would still recommend this kayaking trip, just don’t be disappointed that you won’t see something like the photos of the upper sections of Antelope Canyon.

How to Kayak to Lower Antelope Canyon

  • Most kayak rentals start at the Antelope Point Marina or Antelope Point Boat Ramp. If you’re renting from the marina, make sure you give yourself some extra time to wait for a golf cart to bring you down to the dock.
  • From the marina, you will head out of the wake zone and hug the rock face on the left. You’ll continue hugging that rock face until you come to a floating buoy that says Antelope Creek – No Wake Zone.
  • It’s about a 1.7-mile kayak from the marina to the entrance of the no wake canyon. From the Antelope Point Boat Ramp, it’s about a 1 mile paddle.
  • This section of Lake Powell can be pretty choppy and windy , so we recommend heading out really early and not paddling back too late in the day.
  • Once you’re in Antelope Creek Canyon, the paddle is much easier. When we paddled in the morning the water was like glass. The reflections are incredible!
  • Continue paddling through the canyon for about 1.4 miles until you reach the end of the canyon where you’ll park your kayak and start your hike!

How to Hike to Antelope Canyon from Lake Powell

  • Once you’ve parked your kayak, you’re inside of the canyon and there’s only one way to go.
  • Eventually, the walls will start to narrow, and there will be some sections you need to scramble up or climb a ladder to continue on.
  • There is one section that is totally unique to this area of the canyon where you walk through a maze-like, narrow wall section but the walls are only about 5 feet tall while the rest of the large, wide canyon towers before you.
  • After hiking about 0.4 miles you’ll come to a split in the canyon. We were told to stay to the right , but there wasn’t much after the split.
  • We hiked another about 0.3 after going right at the split and turned around. At this point, the canyon became very large and there didn’t seem to be any more slot canyon-like spots. It was also difficult to find shade at this point so we got pretty hot.

Renting vs. Bringing Your Own Kayak to Antelope Canyon

It’s totally possible to bring your own gear if you have it to go kayaking through Antelope Canyon. We didn’t have our own gear so we rented kayaks and had a great experience.

Antelope Canyon Kayak Rentals

There are a few really great companies that offer kayak and paddleboard rentals. We’ve listed them below along with the company we went with.

A lot of these companies also offer Antelope Canyon kayak tours if you’d like to go but want a guide to show you the way!

Antelope Point Marina

  • Launches at Antelope Point Marina
  • Single & double kayaks are available
  • Hourly rentals start at $10
  • Half-day rentals start at $30
  • Full-day rentals start at $45.00

Kayak Lake Powell

  • Complimentary delivery to your choice launch location
  • Single Kayak – $50.00 per day
  • Double Kayak – $65.00 per day
  • Paddleboard – $60.00 per day

Paddleboard Lake Powell

  • Single kayak – $45.00 per day
  • Double kayak – $55 per day
  • Paddleboard – $50 per day

Paddle Lake Powell

  • Hobie foot pedal kayaks
  • 6 hour single kayak – $75.00
  • 6 hour double kayak – $150.00

Bringing Your Own Antelope Canyon Kayak

If you’d like to bring your own kayak to kayak Lower Antelope Canyon you can definitely do so! You will want to park at Antelope Point Launch Ramp .

The worst part about this is you will have to unload your kayaks and then drive your car up to the parking lot and walk back down.

You will need to pay the $30/week Glen Canyon National Recreation fee to enter. If you have an America the Beautiful annual pass this allows you to enter without paying the fee.

Paddleboarding to Antelope Canyon

Paddleboarding to Antelope Canyon is another popular way to explore this part of Lake Powell. We saw quite a few people on paddleboards, but honestly, we wouldn’t recommend it.

Once the winds picked up in the afternoon it looked incredibly difficult to paddle back to the take-out point . We had a hard time in our kayak and we passed a ton of paddleboarders who were moving very slowly.

If you really want to paddleboard, we would recommend setting out REALLY early and heading back to the launch before 10 a.m.

Tips for Kayaking to Antelope Canyon

  • Get on the water as early as possible- we were on the water for our Antelope Canyon kayak and hike at 8 a.m.
  • Check the weather (especially the wind.) If it’s going to be a very windy day, we would recommend rescheduling.
  • Check the weather for rain. If there is any rain in the forecast in the area, please check with the people you’re renting kayaks from. This is a flash flood area and you DO NOT want to be stuck in the canyon during a flash flood.
  • Get an America the Beautiful pass to make parking and exploring the area a breeze.
  • Be sure to be paddling back in the early afternoon. No matter what it will be wavy and windy later in the day, but the earlier you’re paddling back the better. We got back to the marina around 3:30 but it wasn’t very windy the day we paddled.
  • Pack a lunch and pull off inside the Antelope Creek Canyon for a swim. We ate our lunch while hiking, but pulling off and swimming was one of our favorite parts of the adventure!

What to Pack for Antelope Canyon Kayaking

What you pack will depend on whether you’re bringing your own gear to kayak into Antelope Canyon or not. If you do bring your own gear, make sure you bring a PFD along with you as you have to have one on Lake Powell. If you’re renting, they will provide one for you.

  • Water/hiking shoes – We love our chacos and they were perfect for getting wet and then hiking.
  • Energy bars/sandwiches – Make sure to pack some sort of snack/lunch as you’ll be using a lot of energy to paddle & hike.
  • Hydration Bladder – We both brought 1.5 liters of water and both drank it all!
  • Dry Bag – We stored our keys, snacks, and everything else we didn’t want to get wet in our dry bag & clipped it to the kayak.
  • Sunscreen/sunhat/sunglasses – The sun is no joke in this area! Don’t forget your sun protection.
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch – This is a must-have if you plan to bring your phone!
  • Swimsuit/Hiking clothes – We both just wore our swimsuits and swam after our hike so we weren’t wet when hiking.

Wrap-Up: Kayaking in Antelope Canyon

There you have it! We hope this guide helps you plan your Antelope Canyon by kayak trip.

We had an absolute blast being out on Lake Powell and getting to see the canyon from a completely different angle than on the guided tours.

Be sure to check the weather before you head out and don’t forget sun protection. But most of all, have an amazing time!
