YOU KNOW what I’m talking about. You gather at your friend’s place, who’s just returned from their travels. They fire up the computer, open up their photo gallery, and splash their journey onto the screen.

Usually, the first few photos are compelling. A crammed street. A stunning vista. (Or more likely, an airport lounge as they’re waiting for the plane).

Twenty minutes later, the glossly excitement has worn off. You wonder just how many photographs of buildings/trees/desert your friend could have taken. And they’re only on the first week of their two month trip.

You don’t have to sit through this nightmare anymore (or inflict it upon others). This comprehensive guide will show you how to craft memorable travel slideshows that will have your friends raging with envy and bubbling with compliments.

But first, a disclaimer. This guide is NOT for professional and/or accomplished travel filmmakers. I’m sure those people have their own way of doing things.

Instead, this guide is for the vast majority of amateur photographers that are capable with a camera, possess basic video editing software, and lack the storytelling skills to bring it all together in a killer presentation.

So if that sounds like you — read on, dear friend, and heed these words.

Consider your audience

Who are you making your travel slideshow for? Yourself? Your friends and family? The world? It’s always best to start with your audience in mind when you make these first crucial decisions.

Your audience will dictate everything from the photos, the soundtrack, and the overall impression of the travel slideshow.

For instance, your friends and family may enjoy slow pleasant shots of mountains and temples, while your friends are hungry for a taste of the nightlife, glorious beaches, and midnight fire-twirlers.

In some cases, these slideshows can be one and the same. In others, you may want to create multiple versions for each audience.

Tell a story

Random slideshows are boring. These are slideshows filled with a mix of photographs that are arranged in no coherent order, or predictably chronological.

These are boring because they don’t offer any compelling narrative to guide the viewer through your journey.

Think about it – when was the last time you watched a film that was a random assortment of movie clips? Unless you only rent art house flicks, chances are, you watch films that offer a story.

Your job, as editor, is to convey the “emotion” of the trip, rather than a comprehensive play-by-play. Nobody wants to see endless photographs of absolutely everything you saw/ate/did.

They want to experience a taste of what it feels like to venture into a world they’ve yet to experience. Do them a favour and tell them your story.

Use Appropriate Transitions & Movement

Once you’ve selected and arranged your photographs in some semblance of order, you can then decide on transitions and movement.

Keep in mind, certain types of transitions invoke certain feelings in your audience. For example, slow fades are calm and relaxing. Hard cuts are jarring and frantic. You should attempt to match the transition with visual emotion you’re trying to convey.

But sometimes even interesting photos can become monotonous if they’re always sized exactly to the screen. An effective trick is to add movement to the photos, zooming in on interesting aspects much like you would a video clip.

A word of caution: this technique can be easily abused, with too much movement confusing your audience. In this case, less is more.

Insert movie clips

These days pretty much every new electronic device, from mobile phones to digital cameras, has a video recorder built in.

True, the quality hasn’t been all that great, but it’s getting better all the time. The last camera I bought was able to shoot video that looked excellent when blown up on TV, which is more than good enough for YouTube.

You’d be surprised at how effective a clip of you jumping off a waterfall or a 360 pan of Times Square looks when mixed in with the rest of your photographs. It breaks up the monotony and visually brings your trip to life.

If you blend the video clips in well enough, you’ll even leave your audience with the impression of movement throughout the entire film (what I call ‘motion transference’).

Pick A Good Soundtrack

This sounds easy – just grab a couple of your favourite songs and throw them in the background right? Wrong. That’s a recipe for an utterly forgettable travel slideshow.

After all, when you consider your soundtrack ultimately sets the tone of your entire presentation, you realize the music is the most important decision.

Here’s what I do: split my film into multiple sections, than decide on the “mood” you’d like to invoke, and how that fits into the overall structure of your slideshow.

For example, my Thailand trip starts off conveying the feeling of arriving in Bangkok with a heavy rock song. From there, it’s on to Koh Phangan, party central, and the music continues that mood.

Next, I shift gears for a peaceful reflection in the jungle wonderland of Khao Sok National Park, and I picked some ambient, dream-like electronica. In all cases, I matched the music with the mood I wanted to convey about the location.

Avoid Photo Repetition

The invention of digital photography allows us to take thousands of shots at a time. This does not mean you should include more than a fraction of these in your travel slideshow.

There’s no better way to kill a memorable photograph in an audience’s mind than to have 8 other versions right after it.

Instead, limit yourself to the few shots that let you tell the story. You have to weigh the visual and emotional impact of each sequence to determine the impression you want to create.

If this means cutting out some of your favourite shots, so be it.

Mix Scenery With People

A rule of thumb for scenic photographs – they’re always more interesting when you’re actually there.

The colors, the majesty, the smells. None of that is conveyed through a TV or computer screen. That means try not to use too many scenic photos in your travel slideshow.

Scenic photos are helpful in setting a stage for the destination, but don’t rely on them to keep your audience’s interest for long.

A good strategy is too mix the scenery photographs with shots of people, as faces are generally more compelling than sunsets.

Keep it short (leave them wanting more)

We’ve all watched travel slideshows that start out well, but after an hour of mountain sunsets and drunken party photos, you’re fighting to stay awake. Don’t let this happen to you.

Carefully weigh every photograph and every video clip you’ve used. Does it further the momentum of the slideshow? Is it visually compelling? Do I get tired after watching it more than twice?

When in doubt, cut it out. It’s always better to leave your audience wanting more, rather than buried under an avalanche of mediocrity.

Don’t narrate it

Finally, the big day arrives! You gather your audience around your TV or projector screen, the air buzzing with anticipation.

You dim the lights, voices hush. You click play and wait for your travel slideshow masterpiece to blow them away.

The best thing you can do from this point on, is keep quiet. I know, the temptation to deliver informative and fascinating tidbits behind every photograph will be great.

You’ll be thinking: what if they don’t know how old that building is? Or what the name of my guide was? Or how incredibly drunk I was when I took that?

Trust me. You will ruin your slideshow if you try and narrate it. A better idea is to view the show once in its entirety, THEN go back and reveal the factoids behind your journey.

The important thing is to allow your audience to experience the slideshow on their own terms, without your voice in the background.

When the lights come back on, they will applaud your genious, and wonder when you’re going on your next trip.

You are back from your trip and the photos are sitting there in memory on your home computer HD.  Make a slideshow! It’s easy and works well to build that travelogue story you have of your favourite holiday adventures.

Refrain from showing random shots, or everything you took. Boring!

There are many ways to put together a slideshow, from just showing a folder of pix to a full-blown production. (Including beer & popcorn)

Slideshows have come a long way from the original slides in a Kodak carousel machine projected up against your living room wall. In those days you could only put your slides in a certain order and each one would be a very straight cut with perhaps the stereo playing some music. Not all was bad about this I have to say, as projecting Kodachrome slides 10 x 8 feet on the wall certainly had impact!

Otherwise these days it has all gotten so much easier and better in every regard. Anyone can put together a slideshow. It depends how much time, and interest you have.

There are some professional slideshow programs out there that can blow your socks off. But for now I’m going to look at the most basic and elementary concepts of stringing together your best travel photos from your holiday.

Everyone should be at least doing something like this, not to bore and frustrate their captive audience. In turn, your friends will be asking to see future shows and you’ll only get better at producing great vacation slideshows.

• Your audience who is it? What are they going to expect?
• What photos should you show, which should you not?
• How long should this slideshow be? 5-10-15 minutes (Before people are bored and snoozing?)
• What pictures might be interesting for your audience?
• Do they want to be entertained or more informed ?
• Pick horizontal formatted photos , verticals can work but are tricky to use.
• Variety – avoid 10 shots of the same sunset, even if they are great.
• WOW them by grouping pix on subjects  of interest.
• Do you have any themes you can develop?
• Add people photos + ones of you and your traveling group in them.
• Use wide, medium and close-up shots to establish and close in on detail.
• Add maps, titles, signs, a soundtrack, narration .
• Aim to build a story, a mood , a feeling around your show.
• This is a travel slideshow keep it that way. Stay on topic .
• Only show your best pictures , edit ruthlessly and when in doubt cut it out!
• Fix cropping, exposure, color balance and do retouching .
• Resize your photos down to a smaller slideshow size of 2000 pixels wide .
• Save as … in a new folder, copy show files
• Sort the order of photos to build your travel story (optional).
• Rename files numerically to keep show order (look for bulk renaming apps to make this easy).

The benefits of this are that you can quickly pull together your best photos and show them right after you get home. Load them onto your phone or tablet or play them on your flat screen TV. There would be no music and you would just narrate as you manually scroll through your images. Many of you I am sure have done this. You can set the pace and stop and start at any point.

The KEY point here is, show only the best pictures, and renumber the files so they play back in the order you want. Method #2 Slideshow Movie File – Import your pictures into a slide building program to make a slideshow in the right order with extra features. With more control over how your trip slides are displayed, you can create a better, more engaging presentation.

You have the option of adding music and/or narration. The slideshow becomes more interesting and effective as a whole travel story when you can use transitions and a few effects to jazz up the visuals.

A wonderful effect you can use to what are essentially static images, are virtual camera movements. By adding a few camera pans and slow zooms to your slides, this adds movement and keeps the audience interested in a better produced show.

Create a montage, pair up verticals together; use background travel themes as needed.

As always use restraint in adding these visual spices to your slideshow or else it ends up becoming a demo of what the program can do and very distracting . Also now you have created the dreaded tacky home movie from hell.

Timing is very important in creating the right feel for your travel show. Vary the tempo throughout the show with faster and slower transitions and how long each slide is displayed will improve the show.

Finding the right music to fit your visuals is not easy. When you find the right soundtrack it makes the show that much better. Great care needs to be made when picking music that runs at the right tempo and conveys the right feel . I often pick several background music files to use for variety and effect.

Figure out ahead of time how to operate your slideshow and sort out any bugs

If you must narrate your show (which you do not have to) keep it short and not every slide has to have a comment. Really, you can be quiet.

After the show answer questions, add more information about your trip. Perhaps play it again…

In the future I will get into the slideshow making software, apps available and how to use them. There also exists online services that enable you to import your photos into templates and generate a simple slideshow. Granted easy, but many of these automated services create very generic and familiar presentations.

Truly the options and tools available to make slideshows these days are endless. You too can create a stunning and compelling travel adventure of your last great holiday. Patek Philippe is kicking off Watches & Wonders by announcing a new version of the fan-favorite Aquanaut Travel Time, this time in white gold. With a blue-grey dial and matching strap, it might not be the khaki-green version that people hoped for, but it's a fun variation for one of the longest-running Patek references in the current catalog. 

The new 5164G has a 40.8mm by 10.2mm case, with the Caliber 26‑330 S C FUS movement that's in the 5164R and the old (sadly discontinued) 5164A stainless steel model, which you can see through the exhibition caseback. The Opaline blue-gray, embossed Aquanaut pattern dial is the same color as the 5980G that was released today, but in this case you get the fantastic rubber strap in a matching blue, with deployant clasp. The price is the same as the 5164R, which in U.S. dollars translates to today's hyper-specific price of $63,043. 

The King was dead, long live the King. My friends know that the ref. 5164A (the steel version of the Aquanaut Travel Time) was one of my favorite watches of all time. The design for tracking a second time zone is one of the most elegant solutions on the market, and that's coming from a massive fan of the Rolex GMT-Master II. 

While I was certain that Patek would eventually fill the gap with something, I figured we'd have to wait until next year. I also hoped against all hope that the 5164 wouldn't get the 5811 treatment and end up in a white gold version. But that's what we got—a part of Patek's broader move away from stainless steel and all the hype it begot on the market, hype that became a double-edged sword for the brand. While I'm still extremely excited to see it in person this week at Watches & Wonders, a part of me thinks that some sporty watches should remain in materials that suit their intended sporty lifestyle. While it's no dive watch, the Aquanaut Travel Time is the ultimate "casual flex" travel watch, one that you should be able to enjoy but not worry too much about. In white gold, it's also about $20,000 more than the stainless steel model was. But who am I kidding – logic be damned, I'm a fan.

I have to admit that I find travel so exhausting that I’m at a loss as to why anyone would willingly watch an episode of Race Across the World , let alone have the stamina to keep up with the whole nine hours of viewing that lies before us.

Having tagged along vicariously for the first leg of their journey, north to south across most of Japan, Race is best understood as being like tourism but in a more intense, condensed, concentrated and indeed exhausting form. The five pairs of contestants, ranging from annoying siblings barely in their twenties to a reassuringly mellow couple in their sixties, are tasked with travelling from snowy Sapporo in northern Japan down to the paradise island of Lombok in Indonesia, via various waypoints in Korea, Cambodia and Malaysia – some 15,000 kilometres in total.

Just like any backpacking holiday, the idea is that you move as fast as possible for the least cost (the budget is fixed at £1,390, the price of two air tickets from Japan to Indonesia), and in order to make the best of the adventure try and squeeze in some sightseeing, local culture and pick up a bit of casual work along the way to pay the bills. So it is a race, in the sense that you want to get to the checkpoints and to Lombok first, and win the £20,000 prize money, but to do it within budget and with some actual pleasure along the way. It’s all about balancing these priorities, and that essential nuance gives the show its charm. The only forms of transport that are banned are planes and the ultra-fast Japanese bullet trains, which would spoil the vibe. They should probably call it “The Sort-of Race Across the World”, if accuracy is the thing.

This, therefore, isn’t a full-on scramble, like some version of Challenge Anneka or a leisurely, carefree Portillo-esque travelogue , but one where the contestants have to find a more optimal vacation balance. It was interesting that the winners on this first Japanese leg are Eugenie and Isabel, a mother and daughter who took a pretty long detour to see the isolated, tranquil and lovely offshore island of Sado, on the “wrong” coast from the point of view of sheer speed. It’s so off the beaten track, even for the Japanese, that it was once used as a place of exile for out of favour politicians and the like.

Yet they still arrived, after five days on the road and having missed a connection, two minutes before twins Alfie and Owen, who just about managed to squeeze in a glimpse of Mount Fuji along their supposedly efficient but actually overly panicky and rushed route. It seems that Isabel’s impressive attempt to get a random Japanese boy to teach her the language on a long bus ride paid off; public signage makes little concession to the foreigner, and the universally friendly citizenry speak surprisingly little English. Our contestants don’t remark on it, but Japanese society is an evidently self-sufficient affair, something visitors always find a novelty.

Stephen and Ivy, the retired couple, aren’t that bothered about coming first, and took their opportunity to tarry at a wasabi farm, pulling up roots, burning their mouths off and cadging a useful lift. Maybe it was something about the famous sauce, but Ivy unloaded how “unintentionally offensive” her husband of many years is, just as he’s asking his hosts how old they all are: “Some have learned to tolerate him, but I love him”. Touching.

What’s also striking about Race Across the World , and something sadly impractical in the “real” world away from reality TV, is how much richer the travel experience of all those involved is because they are deprived, under the rules of the show, of their smartphones. They end up exploring their relationships with their journey partners as much as the picturesque countryside and bustling cities.

The young siblings from Yorkshire, Betty and James, for example, seem to be getting to know each other for the first time on Japanese trains and in random cafes, despite having grown up together. Something similar is also true of the two sets of mum and daughter: Eugenie and Isabel, and Sharon and Brydie. Thrown together and almost forced to talk to one another rather than scrolling through social media, their personal odyssey acquires an emotional and, around the Buddhist shrines, a spiritual dimension. As noted by young James, an unimaginative traveller by his own admission, you don’t get that with a week “having it off in Ayia Napa”. A different kind of pursuit, that.

I've traveled to 9 out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I made along the way.

• I've traveled solo to nine countries in Southeast Asia.
• I've made many mistakes, from traveling during monsoon season to forgetting to bring enough cash.
• Travelers should make sure they plan ahead and research each country's culture.

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA . 

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality. 

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet. 

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.
