Tour of Britain stage 4: Wout van Aert bests Julian Alaphilippe by slimmest margin

Wout van aert took over the race lead with a two-second advantage over ethan hayter..

Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) denied world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) in the final turns of the wheels on stage 4 of the 2021 Tour of Britain .

The two heavyweights of professional cycling dropped Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation) in the final meters of an uphill sprint to the finish on the 210km “queen stage,” from Aberaeron to Great Orme, Llandudno.

This is van Aert’s second win in this edition of the Tour of Britain. He won stage 1 — also an uphill sprint — two seconds ahead of Alaphilippe.

“It was a super hard finish — the first part of the climb was really steep, probably a bit too steep for a guy like me, but I knew if I could hang on there I would have my chance,” said van Aert. “Taking two stage wins here, like this, at the Tour of Britain is already a big success. But with the team, we have now and how my legs feel it is still a possibility to take the overall.”

With the bonus seconds and the margin at the finish, van Aert took control of race leadership from Ethan Hayer (Ineos Grenadiers) while Alaphilippe now sits in third overall, nine seconds back of Hayter.

How it happened

A break of six had gotten away and with 100km to go, a gap of four minutes separated them from the main bunch, including the race leader.

Tim Declercq, Davide Ballerini, and Yves Lampaert (all Deceuninck-Quick-Step) were on the front of the chasing group, with Mark Cavendish lending a hand in sheltering world champion Julian Alaphilipe.

Marc Soler (Movistar Team) lead a group of three off the front, and they connected with the six on the front — with lead that had dwindled to just 20 seconds — and the nine raced over the rolling terrain, chased by the “Wolfpack.”

Andre Greipel (Israel Start-Up Nation) came to the front of the second group to help with the pursuit as soon as the gap had again stretched out to more than 40 seconds, in fast, cross-tailwind conditions.

Soler, the only WorldTour level rider of the nine on the front was content to let the others do all the work.

Silvan Dillier (Alpecin Fenix), the Swiss road racing champion, attacked the main group at 47km and slipped off the front. Rory Townsend (Canyon-SunGod) — second in points classification — and Yves Lampaert went after Dillier a few moments later.

This attack bridged the peloton and the race came back together at 40km to go. But just 2km after the catch was made, Townsend tried to go off the front again. This attempt came to nothing and there was again a single group on the road for a few more kilometers.

The attacks went again and three more riders went off the front to nab sprint points at the intermediate check. Max Kanter (team DSM) won this dash, denying Mauro Schmid (Qhubeka-NextHash) maximum points. Schmid won the “Strade Bianche” stage of the 2021 Giro d’Italia.

These three stretched their lead to 23 seconds, but it looked to be allowed by Tony Martin (Jumbo-Visma) leading the chase, backed by Ineos Grenadiers, and Deceuninck-Quick-Step.

Kater gave up his work in the break at 20km to go, and on one of the many rolling hills, the race came back together inside of 16km.

Movistar Team, Ineos Grenadiers, Jumbo-Visma, and Deceuninck-Quick-Step controlled the pace at the front of the chaotic peloton.

Cavendish sat on Ballerini’s wheel, followed by Alaphilippe. They were shadowed by Arkéa-Samsic for a time before Team DSM came to the front, alongside the 2021 Tour de France green-jersey-winner.

Ineos Grenadiers brought Hayter up to the front of the race to protect his lead into the final 10km.

A small climb at 7km to go thinned the front and Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar Team) saw an opportunity to try to get the stage win. He attacked on the small climb, and immediately opened up a gap which expanded to 11 seconds.

Michał Kwiatkowski dragged Rohan Dennis (Ineos Grenadiers) and Hayter after the 22-year-old American, and they were quickly joined by Lampaert and Alaphilippe. This pace uphill was too much for Jorgenson, and he was absorbed inside of 4km.

Mikkel Honoré and Hayter were momentarily gapped by van Aert, Woods, and Alaphilippe. Van Aert was forced to the front for several hundred meters, and the cat-and-mouse allowed Honoré and Hayter to get back on the wheels at the front.

Honoré launched an attack around a tight, right bend, trying to catapult teammate Alaphilippe up the road. Van Aert covered this, and Woods then launched an attack.

This move dropped Hayter and Honoré, and the world champion was left on the front.

Woods could not sustain the effort, as Alaphilippe lead into the final 300m. Van Aert hauled his big frame from Alaphilippe’s wheels and came around him in the final meter of the race.

Tour of Britain 2021 Route stage 4: Aberaeron - Great Orme

Tour of Britain 2021 stage 3

Possibly, some of the riders spot bottlenose dolphins before the start, as the creatures are peaking in numbers in Cardigan Bay during September. Those who do, may get lucky. Dolphins are considered a good luck omen by many.

The route heads north along the coast to enter the Snowdonia National Park after 50 kilometres. Shortly the first climb appears. Bwlch Llyn Bach is an ascent of 3.3 kilometres long and an average gradient of 5.5% that ramps up to almost 10%.

The riders descend back to the coast for a flat section of 40 kilometres before heading back into more mountainous terrain. The Eidda’s Well climb totals 10.5 kilometres and averages 4.2%. One could also argue that it’s a 2 kilometres at 11.5% with prolonged false flats before and after it.

Along the edges of Snowdonia the route continues to a brutal finale near Llandudno. The Great Orme is a lump of rock sticking out of the sea-front. The 2.5 kilometres test at 5.9% begins friendly before a section of 1 kilometre at 12% shakes things up. The route levels out under the flamme rouge before the last 500 metres rise at 8% to the line.

Riders will pass through Aberystwyth, Borth and Barmouth before embarking on a tough race to the finish line through the Snowdonia National Park and up the Great Orme’s Marine Drive toll road.

Finally, cyclists will face the 1.9km, 9.8% average climb running parallel to Great Orme’s famous tramway.

Here’s the full route, as well as the estimated timings for the day:

Aberaeron (TBC) - 10.30am

Exclusive: Men’s Tour of Britain cut to 6 stages for 2024, as women’s race set for future equal billing

T he men’s Tour of Britain will be cut to six stages in 2024 in order to lay the foundations for full parity with its women’s equivalent in the years ahead, Cycling Weekly has learned.

It follows on from the national governing body announcing it will organise both races in house under its new major events arm .

In a statement shared with Cycling Weekly on Wednesday, British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton confirmed the details of the plan and explained that talks were scheduled with the UCI in order to gain permission to scale back the ProTour event.

"We’ve taken the decision to run the 2024 edition of the Tour of Britain Men over six days rather than the current eight, and we intend to seek permission from the UCI to extend the Tour of Britain Women to six days from 2025," he said.

"This would bring full parity to the events after our decision to align the event names this year – something which is fundamental to our vision for major cycling events in Britain."

Cycling Weekly understands that full parity includes the overall length of the race as well as future prize money at this stage.

British Cycling has contacted various men’s teams to gather opinion on the potential reduction of race days. Dutton explained that there was support for the decision for a variety of reasons.

"From discussions with a number of men’s teams over recent weeks there is strong support for the decision, and a feeling that the reduction in the number of stages will provide more compelling and animated racing for riders at the roadside to enjoy," he explained.

Cycling Weekly revealed last month that the shortened Tour of Britain Women is set to start in Wales in June .

Dutton said that full route details regarding the women's race would be made public within the next fortnight.

He said: "Our host towns and cities for the Tour of Britain Women will be announced within the next two weeks, and we are also now very close to finalising our hosts for the Tour of Britain Men.

"Our team has worked around the clock to safeguard the future of the races in an incredibly short timeframe, and we’re also hugely thankful for the commitment of those who have stepped forward to support us this year and those that have pledged their support for 2025 and beyond.

"While 2024 was always going to be about protecting the immediate future of the races, we remain hugely excited by the opportunities to modernise and grow the events in the years ahead."

British Cycling took over the organisation of both events after the collapse of the former promoter, SweetSpot . After being beset by financial difficulty, the firm entered liquidation in January .

For masters rookie eric cole, golf really did run in the family, share this article.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — It is rare, but Masters Tournament rookie Eric Cole is hardly the first participant whose father preceded him at Augusta National Golf Club.

This is the 88th playing of the tournament, and Cole will be the 14th son to follow in his father’s footsteps. His dad, South African Bobby Cole, played in five Masters, the last one in 1978.

But none of the sons of former Masters participants who played in the tournament also had a mother who was a famous professional golfer, like Cole does.

In fact, when Cole won the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award last season, it came on the 50th anniversary that his mother, former Augustan Laura Baugh, was the LPGA Rookie of the Year.

“I think it’s kind of a cool thing with my mom winning Rookie of the Year 50 years ago, kind of the 50th anniversary of that,” Cole said. “She won it when she was probably 18 or 19 if I had to guess.”

He was correct – she was 18. Cole was 35 when he became the second-oldest to win rookie honors. Todd Hamilton was 39 when he won it in 2004.

“Different path for me. But it’s just really special,” Cole said.

Eric’s dad, who is now 75, won 13 worldwide titles and once on the PGA Tour at the 1977 Buick Open. He held the honor of being the youngest British Amateur winner for 43 years. As a pro, he had top-three finishes in the 1974 PGA Championship and 1975 British Open. His best Masters finish was a tie for 15th in 1975. He also played in 1967, 1972, 1976 and 1978.

High finishes are what Baugh was known for on the LPGA Tour.

Baugh, who turns 69 next month, started on tour in 1973 through 2000. She never won, but finished as a runner-up 10 times with a mind-boggling 70 top-10 finishes. She was among the most visible LPGA players through her TV and print ads for such products as Colgate’s Ultra Brite toothpaste and Wilson Golf.

Bobby Cole and Baugh married in 1980, divorced in 1985, remarried in 1987 and later divorced again. Their last child, Jamie Cole, is 26 and was born in the late 1990s. In all, they had seven children, starting with Eric.

Baugh and Jamie lived In Augusta from 2013 to late 2015, when Baugh ran a golf school in Evans.

Being the son of two accomplished professional golfers, which one impacted his game the most?

“I’d say probably my mom,” he said. “I spent a little more time playing with her growing up. But they’ve both helped a lot. Like at a younger age, as a junior, I played more with my mom and we kind of hit it similar distances. It’s kind of like a learned a little bit more from her because of that.”

When Eric was born in 1988, both parents were in the middle of their professional careers.

“I was always around them going to their tournaments and stuff from a young age. So I kind of saw what they did and thought that was something I wanted to do,” Eric said. “I’ve leaned on them for advice, whether it’s golf course stuff or off-the-golf-course stuff, travel or where to play, what to do. So I’ve leaned on them a lot. They both have been an inspiration to me about how I kind of want to pursue this as my career.”

Eric started playing pro golf in 2009, becoming a dominant player on the minor league tours, winning 58 times.

“Anytime you win a tournament it’s a good thing,” he said. “You can only beat the people you’re playing against, so it feels good to win. You get a nice sense of satisfaction from it. It’s something that translates, at least a little bit, on any stage.”

He never lost hope that he’d make it to the PGA Tour, especially with all his mini-tour victories.

“Yeah, I always wanted to play golf. I was pretty focused as a young person. I always wanted to do it. There was some doubt whether I was going to have any success there for a little while, but I always wanted to be a professional golfer. It’s nice to be on the PGA Tour and on the biggest stage.”

He broke through in 2023, finishing in the top 30 of the Korn Ferry Tour money list in 2022.

“I played a lot of golf with guys who had success on tour, and when I would play with them at home or randomly throughout the year, I felt like my game stacked up pretty well,” Cole said. “I saw them having success, and it fueled me to think, ‘If I just keep at it and doing what I’m doing, if I get the opportunity and end up getting there, I think that I can have success.’”

As a PGA Tour rookie last year, Cole had six-top five finishes, including runner-up finishes in the Honda Classic and the Zozo Championship. He was the only rookie to make it to the second round of the FedEx Cup playoff and the only rookie in the top 50 in the season-ending FedEx Cup standings.

As those high finishes piled up, his spot in the Official World Golf Ranking skyrocketed. From being ranked 384th at the start of 2023, he finished 39th at the end of the year, which is how he earned his spot in this year’s Masters.

During his time on the mini-tours, Cole became friends with Arnold Palmer through Sam Saunders, one of Palmer’s grandchildren. Saunders, who is a year older than Cole, played the PGA Tour in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. At times, Cole caddied for Saunders, even in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

Through Saunders, Cole says he played at least 50 rounds of golf with Palmer at his home in Orlando. Fittingly, the rookie of the year title that Cole won last year is called the Arnold Palmer Award. Palmer, a four-time Masters champion, died in 2016.

“The most memorable thing to me was just spending time around him, hearing some of his old stories about traveling the tour back in the day and some of those stories had my dad in them, which I thought was really cool,” Cole said. “It’s the little stuff like that that when I think about him and growing up kind of means the most to me.”

Tour of Britain overview

The Tour of Britain 2023 starts off on September 3 in Greater Manchester and concludes in Caerphilly, South Wales eight days later. The final stage will feature a return to the legendary Caerphilly Mountain, not undertaken since 2013, where the peloton will have to twice face the 1.3km ascent which averages 10.1% across its 1.3km.

This year’s race, ranked at UCI ProSeries level, marks the 19th edition of the modern Tour of Britain. No other incarnation of the professional race, which has its origins back in 1945, has ever run for longer than eight years.

The final three stages of last year’s edition were cancelled following the death of Queen Elizabeth ll.  Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar) was leading the overall classification following stage 5, and therefore became the overall winner of the 2022 Tour of Britain.

Previous overall winners of the Tour of Britain include Wout van Aert (2021), Mathieu van der Poel (2019), Julian Alaphilippe (2018), Lars Boom (2011 and 2017), Steven Cummings (2016) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (2009 and 2015), Bradley Wiggins (2013), and Dylan van Baarle (2014).

Adrian Schiller as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare's Globe, London, in 2022.

Adrian Schiller obituary

British actor who brought gravitas and style to his many stage roles including Shylock and Kulygin in Chekhov’s Three Sisters

Towards the end of his life, the actor Adrian Schiller, who has died unexpectedly aged 60, found success and sudden fame in two blockbuster TV shows: The Last Kingdom (2018-22), on Netflix, in which he played the richest man in medieval Wessex, Aethelhelm; and ITV’s drama Victoria (2016-19), as Cornelius Penge, a footman in the royal household.

In both, a fleeting glance would suggest that here was a naturally authoritative actor, blessed with gravitas and style. This camouflaged the demonic comic spirit within, which had informed so many of his memorable stage performances since he first appeared in the German Expressionist Carl Sternheim’s 1911 play The Knickers at the Lyric, Hammersmith, in 1991. In a delicious comic performance, he played a weak-chested Wagner-loving barber thunderstruck by a flash of discarded lingerie as the Kaiser drove by, suggesting, said the Times critic, “a tousle-headed combination of Charlie Chaplin, Egon Schiele and Gollum, whose idea of romance is reading extracts from the Flying Dutchman”.

Schiller proceeded to leading roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1990s – his Porter in a disappointing 1996 Macbeth was the funniest I had ever seen, while his entertaining Touchstone in an awful 2000 designer knitwear production of As You Like It rescued another dud evening.

Adrian Schiller as the footman Cornelius Penge in the ITV drama Victoria, first aired in 2016.

He was less prominent in some strange productions at the National – Peter Handke’s wordless The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other in 2008, as one of 27 actors playing 450 characters in a town square, coming and going with no interaction, and as a revolutionary tailor in a poor 2013 retread of Carl Zuckmayer’s 1931 Captain of Kopenick , in which Antony Sher did not eclipse memories of Paul Scofield in the NT’s 1971 production.

On the other hand, he was outstanding in Chekhov’s Three Sisters , superbly directed, and modernised, by Benedict Andrews at the Young Vic in 2012, playing Kulygin, a leather-jacketed schoolteacher tragically infatuated with his own disloyal wife; and he was a compelling, original, quietly spoken and sympathetic Shylock in The Merchant of Venice at the Wanamaker, the candle-lit indoor venue at Shakespeare’s Globe, in 2022. The Merchant rekindled the current noise around the play – is it antisemitic or about antisemitism?

In an interview with the Jewish Chronicle , Schiller tilted towards the second view. He averred that he was “a Jew, but not Jewish”.

Schiller was born in Oxford, the second of four children of Judith (nee Bennett), a teacher, and Klaus Schiller , a gastroenterologist whose family had emigrated from Austria to Britain in 1938. When Klaus was appointed a consultant at St Peter’s hospital, Chertsey, the Schillers moved to Surrey.

Adrian was educated at Kingston grammar school and Charterhouse, in Godalming, Surrey, where he pursued a busy life in stage productions. Instead of drama school, he took a good degree in philosophy (after switching from architecture) at University College London, although he always self-deprecatingly said that he majored in “plays and partying”.

His early television career encompassed series such as Prime Suspect, A Touch of Frost, Judge John Deed and much else, through to the first series of Endeavour in 2013. He also popped up in the Channel 4 series The Devil’s Whore (2008) set in the English civil war, and the Doctor Who story strand The Doctor’s Wife in 2011.

One of his most effective cameos on screen was as the barman in a striking government-sponsored advert in the anti-drink-driving campaign in 2007. He leaned deep into the camera with a series of non-equivocal questions to a bemused, unimpressed young glass-holding customer who may or may not have grasped the seriousness of the interrogation.

Adrian Schiller in 2016.

But he always returned to the theatre, seeking out the most demanding roles with companies who would accommodate him. He gave an almost ideal Cassius, wirily intellectual while bubbling passionately underneath, said Michael Billington, for David Farr’s 2005 RSC touring version of Julius Caesar . In the title role of Tartuffe at the Watermill, Newbury, in 2006, he was cool and venomous, as well as understated, and clearly the star of the show.

And for Stephen Unwin’s English Touring Theatre in 2007, he rebooted the remorseless villain, De Flores, in Middleton and Rowley’s Jacobean shocker, The Changeling . He was more than notable, too, opposite Sher’s Sigmund Freud, as a vividly hilarious Salvador Dalí, in their great encounter scene in Terry Johnson’s Hysteria at the Hampstead theatre, revived there in 2013, 20 years after its Royal Court premiere.

His feature film credits were not extensive, but in 2014 he was well cast as the sardonic high priest Caiaphas in Son of God, Christopher Spencer’s biblical epic. In Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette (2015), scripted by Abi Morgan, he was an imposing Lloyd George, coming round to the persuasion of the militant vote-seeking women led by Meryl Streep as Emmeline Pankhurst and Carey Mulligan as a fictional worker fuelled by the excitement of change and protest.

His last movie, yet to be released, is Red Sonja, in which he plays the king of Turan in a remake of the 1985 sword-and-sorcery Marvel Comics fantasy.

Back on stage in 2023, he returned to questions of Jewish identity and survival in three short new plays at the Soho theatre and a more substantial Holocaust drama, The White Factory by Dmitry Glukhovsky, at the sparky new Marylebone theatre (formerly the Steiner Hall), in which he was a powerful, wise presence in the story of a survivor of the Łódź ghetto in Poland, played by Mark Quartley, adapting to American life in the Brooklyn of the 60s.

At the time of his death, Schiller – who was also a skilled sculptor and guitarist – had just returned from Sydney and the triumphant international tour of The Lehman Trilogy, directed by Sam Mendes, and had been looking forward to the next leg of the tour in San Francisco.

He is survived by his partner, Milena Wlodkowska, a laboratory support technician, and their son, Gabriel, and by his sister, Ginny, and brothers, Nick and Ben.
