9 Duffle Bag Pattern Options To Make You Want To Travel

Have you ever noticed that when you shop for an overnight or weekend duffle bag, you find just a few options, usually a simple nylon bag with a sports brand printed on it? I don’t know about you, but when I like my traveling items to have a little personality.

In this post, we will discuss creating a weekend bag from a duffle bag pattern. I will also show you some wonderful weekend bag patterns that I think you will love.

What Fabric Is Used For Duffle Bags?

Typically, sporty duffle bags are made from woven nylon fabric. Vera Bradley bags are made with 100% cotton and are popular for traveling.

However, what if you want to make your own Vera Bradley-inspired weekend duffle bag? For many of us (myself included,) the idea of creating our traveling bags from a duffle bag sewing pattern is tempting and intriguing.

When choosing fabric for a travel bag, you want something that will be sturdy and strong with little to no stretch. This will ensure the bag keeps its shape and won’t tear or fall apart.

If you want to make your duffle bag, I suggest using one of the following fabrics to ensure your bag will last a long time and hold up to the inevitable trials and tribulations of travel.

  • 100% Quilting Cotton

How To Make a Duffle Bag

I plan on doing a full tutorial later on, but right now, I’ll give you some basic steps to create a duffle bag from scratch. I am a big fan of the style of Vera Bradley bags. However, most of the prints just aren’t my style. These steps will help you create your quilted duffle bag for travel.

Step 1: Choose a pattern

There are hundreds of duffle bag patterns available on the market. Here are some things to consider when choosing a pattern.

  • How many pockets will the bag have?
  • How is it enclosed?
  • Does it have separate compartments?
  • What is the skill level?
  • Does it come with templates?
  • Will the bag have a lining?

Choose a pattern that fits your set criteria regarding skill level, functionality, and style.

Step 2: Follow the pattern instructions.

Any pattern you choose will have instructions on cutting and piecing the fabric. If you select a pattern that doesn’t include quilting the outside of the bag and want to have that extra design element, I suggest cutting out the individual pieces, quilting them, and then piecing the bag together.

To quilt the individual pieces, take the bag fabric, batting, and a “backing” and make the quilt sandwich. Quilt as desired. Straight line quilting looks great on large bags and gives it a beautiful, modern look.

Tip: I suggest using muslin for the backing because it is cheap and sturdy. It will add a layer of strength to the bag’s structure.

Once you have quilted the pieces you want quilted, continue following the pattern instructions to complete the shell of the bag.

Step 3: Create the lining and inside of the bag

Again, the pattern should have the instructions for adding pockets, compartments and lining to the bag. If you don’t want a lining in your bag and just want it to be a large open bag, you can skip this step entirely.

Step 4: Add the straps

Create your straps via the pattern instructions and add them to the bag. If the bag has a lining, you will need to make sure when you add the straps that, you conceal the raw edges inside the lining.

If there is no lining, fold the ends of the straps and attach them to the bag, ensuring that the raw edges are concealed under the strap.

And there you have your completed bag! Enjoy!

How Long Should a Duffle Bag Strap Be?

The length of the straps for your duffle bag will depend on where you will attach the straps and how tall you are. As a good rule of thumb, duffle bag straps should be around 30” long.

The great idea is to use a fabric measuring tape and drape it over your shoulder to see where 30” lands on you. Depending on where it hits, you can add or subtract a few inches to make it the perfect size.

The large duffle bag consists of two zippered pockets on the front and back of the bag. Additionally, there are two side pockets so you can easily slide things in and out for easy access.

Duffle Bag Pattern. Finished Top View

The bag has a dual zipper opening with wide access (it opens from side to side). I purposely designed it this way because I want my carry-all bags to have a large opening for ease-of-use.

On top of that, the bag comes with a shoulder strap so that you can wear it across your body. You can, of course, make it without the shoulder strap so the duffle is essentially a giant tote bag to carry around all your belongings.

Since this is a DIY project, you can make it however you want. This is the ABSOLUTE BEST part about sewing your own bags! You get to choose what features you want or don’t want.

How do You Make a Rectangular Duffle Bag?

Follow the step-by-step tutorial below and I will show you exactly how to make this stylish and useful bag. The duffel itself is not difficult to sew. However, it is not a quick sewing project as there are many parts to the bag, including 3 zippers. This sewing project is most suitable for those who have completed other simple sewing projects before.

What are the Dimensions of Large Duffle Bag?

Duffle Bag Pattern. Height and width

The front of the handmade duffle bag measures approximately 19.5″ (49.53cm) wide and 12″ (30.48cm) tall. The height of the handle strap is approximately 9″ (22.86cm) .

Duffle Bag Pattern. Side dimensions

The side of the duffle bag measures approximately 8″ (20.32cm) at the bottom and 6.5″ (16.51cm) wide along the zipper.

How much Fabric Do I need to make a Duffle Bag

To make a large duffle bag, you will need 1 yard of exterior fabric and 1 yard of lining (0.9 meters each) . You can also choose to make the bag using two types of exterior fabric. In that case, you will need 1/2 yard of each fabric . For a complete list of materials you will need for duffle bag, see MATERIALS below.

What Fabric is Used for Duffel Bags?

You can use any woven fabric you like. Fabrics in the following list are especially suitable for making duffel bags:

  • Canvas – Canvas is sturdy, durable and heavy duty. This makes is very suitable as duffle bags usually go through repetitive wear and tear.
  • Outdoor fabric – Similar to canvas, outdoor fabric is generally thick and heavy duty. They are also water resistant and some even waterproof, another bonus feature!
  • Thick Cotton Fabric – Other thick cottons such as denim and twill are also good choices.
  • Vinyl Fabric – Durable, stylish, and will look store-bought. However, recommend using a Heavy Duty Sewing Machine or industrial machine as the fabric pieces are thick and can be difficult to sew.
  • Regular Weight Cotton reinforced with batting or interfacing – if you see a lightweight cotton print that you just have to have , reinforce it with fusible fleece or interfacing! Additionally, use canvas fabric as the lining for extra support. This is the option that I used. See STEP-BY-STEP TUTORIAL for how to make a sturdy large-sized duffle bag .
  • DUFFLE BAG SEWING PATTERN (Available in the Free MindyMakes Library ) .
  • If using one type of fabric: 1 yard (44” wide)
  • If using 2 types of fabric: 1 yard (44” wide) of each fabric
  • LINING FABRIC : 1 Yard (44” wide) – ideally medium to heavy-weight woven cotton such as canvas, duck cloth, or heavy-duty twill. If wanting to use light weight fabric, you can always fuse interfacing to add stability
  • FUSIBLE INTERFACING – 1 Yard
  • FUSIBLE FLEECE – 1 Yard. I used Pellon 987F Fusible Fleece . May not need if using medium to heavy-weight canvas or duck cloth for the exterior.
  • ONE SIDED FUSIBLE ULTRA FIRM STABILIZER (20”wide) – 2/3 of a yard (20”or 51cm) . I used Pellon 71F Peltex
  • 30” DUAL SEPARATING ZIPPER (x1) – I used Coats & Clark Sport Parka Dual Separating Zipper . You can also use a longer zipper and trim down
  • 7″ MATCHING ZIPPER (x2)
  • TWO 47”(119.38cm) pieces – for bag handles
  • ONE 60”(152.4cm) piece – for shoulder strap
  • TWO 3″ (7.62cm) pieces – for side panel tabs
  • 1.5” WIDE D RINGS (x2) – Also available on Amazon along with swivel hooks and slider
  • 1.5” WIDE SWIVEL HOOK S (x2)
  • 1.5” WIDE SLIDER (x1)

DUFFLE BAG PATTERN

For the Large Duffle Bag Sewing Pattern , ALL pattern pieces are available in printable format except the [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] and [BOTTOM FUSIBLE PIECE] pattern. You will need to draw these patterns directly on the fabric . The dimensions of these two pattern pieces are listed below:

  • Cut 2 Pieces on Lining Fabric
  • BOTTOM FUSIBLE PIECE: 19.5″ x 8″ (49.5 cm x 20.3 cm)

Alternatively, you can also deduct 0.5″ (1.27mm) from entire border of [BOTTOM PIECE] pattern by folding the paper pattern in. This will give you the dimension of [BOTTOM FUSIBLE PIECE] if you prefer not to draw the pattern.

LEFT : First, use zipper foot to sew zipper to [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] RIGHT : Second, when you get close to the end of the zipper, remove the fabric + zipper. No need to backstitch as you will stitch over where you stopped in the next step.

NOTE: Ideally, keep the needle in the zipper+fabric, lift the pressor foot, then open the zipper the other way (if using a double zip zipper) and finish stitching to the end of the zipper. However, in my case I wasn’t able to slide the zipper pull under my pressor foot because the pull was too thick (I’m using a parka zipper)

Duffle bag pattern. How to sew zipper into top load duffle bag.

Flip the fabric counterclockwise 180°(red arrow) so the fabric is to your right. Switch zipper foot to the other side. Open the zipper.

Pin other piece of [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] to other side of zipper, right sides together. Stitch together like you just did.

DIY duffel bag. Trimming zipper piece down to match side piece.

Place [SIDE PIECE] over [ZIPPER PIECE] . matching at the midline. Note that [ZIPPER PIECE] is (likely) going to be wider be than the top edge of [SIDE PIECE] (see where arrows are pointing). We are going to trim [ZIPPER PIECE] down to match the top width of [SIDE PIECE] .

NOTE: If you find that your [SIDE PIECE] and [ZIPPER PIECE] match exactly, no need to trim!

DIY duffel bag. Trimming zipper piece down to match side piece.

Measure the difference on each side of the [ZIPPER PIECE] versus [SIDE PIECE] . As you can see in the photo, the excess on the left and right sides is not the same.

Trim off the excess along entire strip of [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] . Now it matches the [SIDE PIECE] exactly!

DIY duffel bag. Ironing fusible fleece to exterior zipper piece.

LEFT : Now measure the width of the fabric of [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] on one side of the zipper. Take that measurement (3 and 5/8 in or 85mm) and subtract seam allowance of 1/2 in (12.7mm). In my case I get a new width of 3 and 1/8 in (79mm). Cut two pieces of fusible fleece with the new width and the length of the [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] RIGHT : Fuse fleece onto wrong side of [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] . Repeat for other side.

LEFT : Fuse Peltex to [DUFFLE BOTTOM] and [DUFFLE BOTTOM LINING] . RIGHT : Pin strap to [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] and [DUFFLE BACK PIECE] as pictured.

How to make a duffel bag. Stitching handles to bag

Stitch strap down to [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] at 1/8” (3mm) from edge of strap. Stop sewing (black dotted lines) about 1”(25mm) from top edge of bag. You will finish sewing the straps in after you sew the [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] to [TOP ZIPPER PIECE] . Repeat for [DUFFLE BACK PIECE]

How to make a duffel bag. Sewing bottom piece to front and back pieces

  • Sew [DUFFLE BOTTOM PIECE] to [DUFFLE BACK PIECE] , right sides together. Repeat for [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] .

How to make a duffel bag. Holding lining of zipper piece with clips

Next, use clips (or pins) to clip the Top Zipper Lining Pieces together so they don’t get in the way when you sew the exterior of the bag together.

How to make a duffel bag. Marking midpoints of Duffle Top/Side Piece

Fold [DUFFLE TOP/SIDE PIECE] in half and make small clips on both sides to mark the midline.

How to make a duffel bag. Marking midpoints of front and back piece

Repeat for [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] and [DUFFLE BACK PIECE] to mark the midline.

How to make a duffel bag. Marking midpoints curved portion of bag

On [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] , mark the midpoint of the rounded corner by folding in half and making a small clip. Repeat on the other rounded corner. Do this on [DUFFLE BACK PIECE] as well.

How to make a duffel bag. Measuring pattern pieces

LEFT : First, measure the distance between the bottom of [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] to midpoint of rounded corner you just marked. My bag measured about 12.75 in (323.85mm). Next, add 1/2”(12.7mm) seam allowance to that measurement (so mine is now 13.25” or 336.55mm). RIGHT : Use chalk to mark the new measurement (that includes seam allowance) sides of [DUFFLE TOP/SIDE PIECE] , as pictured. Repeat on other end.

Duffle bag pattern. Pinning and sewing bag exterior together.

Pin/clip [DUFFLE FRONT PIECE] and [DUFFLE BACK PIECE] to [DUFFLE TOP/SIDE PIECE] , right sides together. Make sure to match at all the markings you just made (midline, rounded corner).

I find it easier to use pins to stabilize rounded corners to [ DUFFLE TOP/SIDE PIECE] and use clips for the rest.

On the bottom corners (blue arrows), I find it easier to sew if I first make a diagonal cut that is just shy of the 0.5” box.

DIY Handmade duffel bag. Tip for sewing curve to rectangle

Another tip is I find it much easier to pin (and sew) if you first make a few notches around the rounded curve (LEFT PHOTO) as well as around your marking on [DUFFLE TOP/SIDE PIECE] , red lines on RIGHT PHOTO. Just make sure the notches don’t extend past the 0.5” sew line.

Next, turn your bag to the right side and finish stitching the bag handles at the top (red dotted line), making sure to overlap with the black dotted lines (where you had previously sewn). Backstitch.

This is so excellent. Thank you so much for providing this free pattern. I am part way through constructing my bag and it is turning out beautifully. I think the step for attaching the d rings for the shoulder strap is missing from the instructions. Thought you would want to know!

Yes, thank you for letting me know! I’ve updated the post so it has the instructions for attaching D-rings for the shoulder straps. Thanks again so much!

Great directions and visuals!!! The one thing I can’t find and when and how to add the D-rings for the shoulder strap.

Sorry about that! The post has been updated to include the instructions for adding D-rings. Hope that helps!

I am using 2 different pieces of fabric and I can’t seem to lay out the patterns to fit on a 1/2 yard. The pieces colored blue don’t seem to fit on a 1/2 yard. What am I doing wrong?

How wide is your 1/2″ yard of fabric? Is it at least 44″ wide?

The problem I have is with getting 4 pieces of the front piece A on the outer fabric. I can only get 2 pieces Thanks for your help.

Oh my, there is a correction!!! With 1/2 yard you will be able to get Front/Back Piece (x4), Middle Piece – Zipper Top (x2), and side piece (x2). The bottom piece (x1) will need to be cut out of a different fabric. If you want to cut the bottom piece out of the same fabric as well, you will need 1 yard of the same fabric. I’ve updated the correction in the post. Sorry about that. Hope this helps!

The shortage arises when I need to get 4 front piece A of the outer fabric. I can only get 2 of this piece. Thanks for your help.

Just finished the bag. It came out great. Thanks for posting the tutorial and written directions online. I made it for a friend that is retiring and he loved it. Thanks again!

Travel Duffle Bag (Carry on size with trolley sleeve) sewing pattern

Travel Duffle Bag (Carry on size with trolley sleeve) sewing pattern

This is a pdf sewing pattern for a new, slightly smaller, Travel Duffle Bag from the designer Studio Cherie . The original travel duffle was very popular, but we feel this slightly smaller size is now perfect.

The designer describes this bag as perfect as a carry-on. She has included a built-in sleeve for carrying the duffle on the handle of your rolling bag. So now its easy to manage two bags as you wheel through the airport, the Travel Duffle slides over the extendable handle of your roller case and comes along for the ride, allowing you to have two bags easily.

Sizing info: The new dimensions are 18 inches wide by 11 inches tall and 9 inches deep.

Travel Duffle Bag (Carry on size with trolley sleeve) sewing pattern

For those of you who have the original pattern, she does some comparison here:

  • The original duffle is 20 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches.
  • This bag is washable in your washing machine.
  • The straps are 2″ wide polypro or nylon, still, lots of opportunities to make your bag look amazing with contrasting fabrics, maybe even more so now with all of the colors you can choose from for straps. There is a link in the pattern to take you to the place where the designer gets her straps.
  • There is a magazine pocket on one end.
  • The zippered, pleated pocket on the other end is explained a little better this time with this pattern the designer believes.
  • She came up with a faster and easier way to add the straps!
  • She used 6-ounce batting in this one instead of the 8-ounce.
  • Overall, you are going to find that this duffle is faster and easier to make than the original and still very useful and impressive as a gift.

What is needed to make the new Travel Duffle Bag:

  • *6-ounce polyester quilt batting 1.5 yards,
  • *Muslin (or other desired lining fabric) 44” wide, 1.5 yards,
  • *Feature Fabric 44” wide or 54” wide, 1.5 yards,
  • *Contrasting fabric for handles 44” or 54” wide, one yard,
  • *#5 Nylon Coil Zippers one at least 20” long and one at least 11” long,
  • *2″ wide Nylon or Polypro Webbing – 10 feet,
  • *Optional Wide Seam Binding 6 yards,
  • 1/3 yard of duck canvas ,
  • 1/3 yard of décor bond (heavy fusible interfacing ),
  • *Cutting mat, Quilter’s Ruler, Rotary Cutter ,
  • * Basic sewing supplies ,
  • *A sewing machine .

Travel Duffle Bag (Carry on size with trolley sleeve) sewing pattern

The pattern is illustrated with lots of color photos and diagrams. The designer uses 14 point type in the pattern, so the writing is nice and big. She can even read it without her reading glasses.

Quilted travel duffle.

On-the-go just got a whole lot prettier! This beautiful duffle is made for travel. Pack it on its own or use the sleeve on the back to slip it over the handle of a rolling suitcase. Classic hardware pulls it all together, allowing the design to include carry handles as well as a fully adjustable and detachable shoulder strap. Plus, a magnetic snap keeps the generous front pocket closed.

Robin

I need help please. I attached the interior pocket onto the back main panel as instructed. When I attach the sleeve on the outside of the back panel I put the bottom of the sleeve 3.5 inches up from the bottom starting at the outside edge sewing in 5 inches then up to the top. The sews up the interior pocket so that’s it’s about 2 inches deep and does not leave the sleeve open to slip over the luggage. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong and help would be appreciated

Liz Johnson

Hi Robin, The interior pockets are not exceptionally deep. You can see in the beauty photo within the introduction, with the bag open, how they look in comparison to the items put into the pockets. It is mentioned within the lining pocket instructions, the your stitching “divides the interior pocket into three sections. Later, when you stitch the back sleeve in place, the pocket will be further divided into two shorter outer pockets and two narrow pen pockets.” On the sleeve, I’m not 100% sure what is happening, but maybe taking a look at the drawing underneath step #8 will …  Read more »

Bonjour et merci beaucoup pour ce tuto bien documenté! J’ai adapté le modèle pour faire un sac à langer pour ma petite fille et je suis très contente!

Hi Christine – thank you so much for letting us know about your success with our project! I love the idea of re-purposing this as a diaper bag. Excellent!

Ali B

I made this duffle for my daughter’s birthday for an upcoming trip. It really looks great. Many of the techniques were new for me (zippers, piping, hardware install, etc). I took my time and referenced the instructions often. Both the instructions and the linked tutorials were very well put together and easy to follow. I have far greater confidence in tackling new projects now. Thank you!

Hi Ali – that is such great news – and exactly what we love to hear. Our goal is always to give folks the confidence they need to move forward to all kinds of fun projects.

Honey S Banasiak

I made this for my daughter-in-law for Christmas and it came out beautifully! I actually made her two different bags but definitely like this pattern much more.

Hi Honey! Thanks so much for letting us know. We always love hearing about project successes. And… we love being “the most liked pattern” too 🙂

Jo W.

I am an experienced quilter/bag maker and am excited to make this for an upcoming trip! One question, do you think it is necessary to quilt it with the vertical lines? I was thinking about doing some free motion quilting, but wasn’t sure if that would mess things up.

Hi Jo – glad to hear you’re going to make our duffle. It’s SO popular. The straight line quilting does make it easier to align the pockets, panels, and the zipper and sidewall, but if you’re experienced, that will probably not be an issue for you. As always with our projects – and really, for all sewing (am I right?), the final choices as up to you!

Susanna

Hi, have you done a video on this bag? I have read the instructions but I am more visual learner. Thanks

Hi Susanna – We don’t do full video tutorials at this time. However many, many folks have made this popular bag with great success just using the photos and steps.

Melissa

This is an awesome bag. Would it be possible to just make this with canvas and not create the quilting?

Hi Melissa – thanks so much! This is a VERY popular duffle. We have not tested the bag without the quilting. It certainly could be possible, however, the way everything is layered, the quilting is what keeps everything nice and flat — no shifting during construction. There is such a thing as TWO-sided fusible fleece. That could be a possible option for keeping the layers flat and secure. That said, without testing, I can’t give you a 100% guarantee of what will or won’t work.

Titoune19

Thank you so much for letting us know you had such great success with this pattern. I think it will make a great diaper bag!

Tyler

This is such an awesome pattern – it’s the first bag that I’m sewing and my first time quilting anything as well! I have a question about sewing the exterior and interior pieces with the batting. I marked my material to sew and quilt the exterior sides of the bag but my material keeps shifting. I lined up everything nicely and tried adding pins all over to stop it from shifting but I’m still having the issue (and I’m using a walking foot with the interior/fusible fleece side facing up). What am I doing wrong??

Hi Tyler – Hmmm, it certainly sounds like you are doing everything right. With the fabric layered wrong sides together, aligned, securely pinned, and a Walking foot… you should be stitching without problem. It makes me think your Walking foot might not be operating correctly. Are you 100% sure it’s correctly attached? Have you tried doing some quilting on scraps with the same foot? When you attach the foot, take a look — without fabric in place — at the throat plate area. While using the hand wheel, allow the foot to move and confirm that the feed dogs in …  Read more »

Thank you for the feedback Liz! I’ll check out my walking food and if that’s not the issue I’ll try your other suggestion. Thank you!

I have fallen in love with this bag, and have just ordered my fabrics (Timeless Treasures). I will need to work S-L-O-W-L-Y as I tend to have difficulty with attention and details. Hope to finish by Christmas! All of your your comments have given me hope that I will be able to succeed with this. 😀

Hi Maureen – Yay – I know you can do it! This is such a popular project – hundreds of folks have found success with it. Slow and steady is always the best approach. Another tip we often give: if you come across a part you are struggling with, make it first from scrap fabric to work through the steps. This helps cement it in your brain and you’ll be ready to motor through that section with your real fabric with confidence.

Laura

I’m going to attempt this one with my Tula Pink fabric I don’t want to cut haha. I’m a beginner but my mum is the experienced one. But does anyone know of a video sew-along for this bag? Thanks 🙂

Hi Laura – Ohhh Tula … love her so much. I know you can do it. Read through the instructions a few times to “make it in your head” and go slowly. We don’t do full video project tutorials. And, since all our patterns/projects are copyrighted… I would hope no one else has either since that violates copyright – but (**sigh**) the internet. Even so, by working carefully and slowly, we know you can make it through. Let us know how it goes!

Christina

I love working on projects from Sew4Home, and this one has been a labor of love and patience. I had some old Amy Butler home decor weighted fabric in my stash that I pulled out for my first attempt. I would suggest making note of what direction to quilt the bottom loop piece because I quilted it in the other direction (which I don’t mind) but will quilt in the recommended direction on my second attempt. I will admit that the process of attaching the side panels to the loop was a challenge where I cused up a storm as …  Read more »

Hi Christina – Thank you for letting us know about your success with this pattern. Sorry to hear you had a bit of a challenge with the direction of the lines of quilting. We do try to be super detailed with our steps and pictures, but there is a lot going on with this project. Glad to hear it was fixable. If you follow us on social media, we’d love to have your post a pic or two so we can all be inspired. I bet it is gorgeous in Amy Butler fabric!

Thanks Liz! Just shared some pics on Instagram and tagged Sew4home as the pattern credit.

Hi Christina – we saw them pics – thank you so much for sharing and such a lovely job!!

robin

I just finished this pattern and wow!!!!! I’m not totally new to sewing but totally not a master and this was do-able for me. You had every detail of the pattern photographed and described to a T. Thank you so much for the wonderful pattern and giving it for free is the icing on the cake.

Hi Robin – that is such great news! Thank you so much for letting us know about your success. If you follow up on social media, we’d love to see a picture posted 🙂

Terry

I absolutely love this site. It has given me so many fun projects to enjoy using my machine. I think every member of my family needs one of these duffles!

Wow – thanks, Terry. So sorry that we missed your comment all those months ago, but it was so sweet to come across it today.

Oyez oyez!  This needs to

Oyez oyez!  This needs to vacay with me this summer.  Most curtains for the ne house are finished and hung, and I’m thinking about vacation time.  I need this.  I really, really need this.  Thank you!  I had downloaded the project before, but then forgot, so I appreciate the reminder!

Fabric Options

Choosing the best fabric to sew a duffle bag depends on your specific needs and preferences. However, a popular choice is canvas fabric. Canvas is known for its durability and strength, making it ideal for bags that will be used frequently and carry heavy items. It is also resistant to wear and tear, making it suitable for long-lasting use. Another advantage of canvas is that it can be easily customized with different colors or patterns, allowing you to create a unique and stylish duffle bag. Additionally, canvas fabric is relatively easy to work with, making it a good option for both beginners and experienced sewers.

You might also try duck cloth, leather, etc. You could even use quilting cotton fabric with fusible fleece or thermoloam for extra weight. You'll also need some quilting cotton to use as the lining fabric.

Pattern Sizing

The Wanderlust Duffle Bag comes in four sizes - check out the sizing chart below:

The pattern also includes all the info you need for the strap length, sewing a zipper pouch on the side of the bag, and more.

Customer Reviews

"Wanderlust duffle pattern is great. I made several duffle bags this Christmas, and used a different pattern for each so my grandchildren wouldn't be confused by the similarity of most of the fabric. Wanderlust pattern was by far the best! Wonderful directions and all measurements and directions were precise and correct. Far and away better than any others I used. There was one that was also good but did not have a lining, so it was simpler." - Laurie

"What a great little pattern this is! Yup, successfully finished with a bag, so the pattern definitely works. Really enjoyed the versatility I was able to achieve and can't wait to make some more. I used a combination of leatherette and cotton woven, and am very happy with the results." - Jenny

"The pattern was easy to use. The directions were clear and the bag went together easily. I plan to make a number of these." - Ronna

Alright - now its time to get your sewing machine, select your durable fabric pieces, print out your pattern template, buy some bag hardware from amazon or elsewhere, and get started sewing. You'll find that this digital pdf sewing pattern has a great sewing tutorial that makes for an easy assembly for a great every day duffle bag. Make it with a zipper pocket compartment for even more storage. The Wanderlust Duffle Bag is the perfect weekend bag or travel bag for all your kids adventures.

How do I care for my duffle bag to keep its pattern looking new?

To care for your duffle bag pattern and keep it looking new, it's best to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Generally, you can use a mild detergent and a soft cloth to gently clean any stains or dirt. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the pattern.

20 FREE Weekender Bag Patterns

**Please scroll down the page for the links to the free patterns**

Why spend a hundred dollars or more on a designer fabric travel bag when you can make your own for a fraction of the cost?

~Advertisements~

Here you'll find a collection of twenty free weekender bag patterns & tutorials gathered from all over the web! So if you're looking to sew a strong, sturdy bag for overnight travel, you've come to the right place.

With just enough room for toiletries and a change of clothes , a compact bag like this is just the right size for an overnight getaway or a weekend trip to Grandma's. And any of these bags would also make a great gym, sport, or dance bag.

Keep in mind though that most of these bag patterns aren't for the faint of heart. Most require somewhat complex construction techniques consisting of many pattern pieces, lots of steps, the insertion of one or more zippers, inner pockets and compartments, linings, and require working with heavy, bulky fabrics - things that can be challenging even for a experienced seamstress. Therefore, a bag like this probably wouldn't be a good sewing project for a beginner.

But of course, the payoff for tackling a involved project like this is not only getting to choose your fabrics, but getting to customize your bag as you'd like and to experience the satisfaction of a completed project.

To give you bag a more professional look, consider adding hardware such as rivets, buckles, or metal snaps. Also, leather trim and piping can give your bag a more finished look. And consider adding a detachable shoulder strap to your bag. This way, you'll be able to carry it like a piece of luggage and not have a long strap that could get caught on things while traveling. And consider treating the outside of your finished bag with a Scotchgard-type stain repellent to help protect it from stains.

Best duffel bags for any excursion: Find the right bag for you

duffel bag

Your arsenal of luggage has most of the requisites: the clunky suitcase, the over-the-shoulder computer bag and even that old backpack from college you still use to this day. But what about a reliable duffel bag? You can’t lug your hard shell suitcase on your overnight casino resort trip, and that book bag is too small to function as a weekender. You need a proper duffel bag pronto! Read on for our picks for the best duffel bags out there.

What to consider when buying a duffel bag

Functionality.

How well your bag functions is the top priority when hunting for a quality travel duffel. "Packing cubes are a game changer for suitcases, as they keep all of your belongings organized and packed tightly inside," says co-CEO Audrey Kohout of shipping company Luggage Forward . "When a duffel bag has anything similar, it always makes me happy. A laptop sleeve, water bottle holder, or even a divider inside the main pocket to separate dirty and clean clothes can make a huge difference."

Another aspect of a duffel bag’s functionality that's often overlooked, says Kohout, is the number of straps. "Having lots of straps might feel like it offers versatility, but it can actually make travel more of a headache. Too many straps, handles and loops can just create more opportunities for it to snag on something, or get tangled with your neighbors’ luggage in the overhead compartment."

Durability of materials

Obviously, everyone wants a duffel bag made from sturdy materials — no one wants their bag to bust. "But different levels of durability are required if you’re taking your duffel on a Disney Cruise versus a multi-week camping trip," says Gemma Gaisano Ng, co-founder of luggage company No Reception Club .

"A good rule of thumb is to opt for nylon or polyester when you’re expecting your bag to work hard on your trip — it might be thrown around, put on the ground a lot, in various types of weather, stuffed to the brim, etc.,” Ng continues. “Alternatively, opt for all-over canvas or leather when you think you’ll be more careful with your bag for things like work travel, or trips where you expect your bag will mostly be placed on clean surfaces."

It’s paramount for your duffel bag to function optimally and be durable enough to withstand some dings here and there, but we can’t ignore the desire to also look good on our adventures. "Choose a bag that you'll be proud to carry," says Zon D'Amour, founder of Designed By D'Amour , a vegan duffel bag producer. "In my experience, people typically order bags from my company that they can customize for a personal connection, which includes embroidering their name, initials, or even their birthday. Many customers also appreciate being able to choose their favorite colors, oftentimes the colors of their alma mater, their sorority or fraternity. Choose a bag that's in alignment with your personal style."

How we selected the best duffel bags

We enlisted four top experts in the travel and luggage industry for their professional insight on choosing the best duffel bags. We also conducted extensive research into the expert’s choices and screened several customer reviews for those picks.

What is the difference between a duffel bag and a travel bag?

“As the name suggests, travel bags are specifically designed with on-the-go travel in mind,” Kohout states. “They’re usually a bit smaller, easier to carry around, and often have features to make your airport experience simpler. Duffel bags can be a great piece of luggage for travel, too, but they’re intended to be more versatile for other activities in addition to travel.”

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Are duffel bags suitable for air travel?

Of course! And, according to D’Amour, duffel bags are a smart choice as carry-ons. “We've all heard of, or may have experienced, flights being delayed for various reasons,” she says. “So I typically keep a day's worth of ‘emergency’ clothes and toiletries in my duffel bag, as well as my computer, a book, snacks, etc.”

Can I use a duffel bag as my primary luggage for extended trips?

“You can absolutely use a duffel as your main bag for longer trips, especially those with multiple compartments,” says Kohout. “As long as you can fit all your belongings into the duffel of your choosing, there’s no reason why it can’t serve as your go-to luggage. Many brands even offer the same duffel in several different sizes, so you can choose what best suits your needs.”

Why are duffel bags better than suitcases?

Actually, one isn’t better or worse than the other. “It really boils down to what you’re using it for, what you’re packing, and how long you’re packing for,” says Kohout. “A lot of people love duffel bags because they offer more structure with separate sections for things. They also have convenient zipper pouches for smaller items, and can be easy to carry for those who can’t stand wheeling a suitcase around.”

How do you pack a duffel bag?

Duffel bags can be packed in various ways, according to the travel occasion. “As a fashion designer who's also an entertainment journalist, I often take my duffel bags to press junkets and get ready on site,” D’Amour states. “So, I'll typically put my toiletry bag on top, laptop in the middle, clothes at the bottom, shoes on the side. How to get to Suzdal from Moscow

duffle travel bag pattern

If you are ever in Moscow, you should look at The Golden Ring , a ring of towns and cities north east of Moscow which played an important part in the formation of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns themselves are almost like museums and none more so than the jewel of the Golden Ring, Suzdal . You have to visit this town if you are in Moscow and I will tell you exactly how to get to Suzdal from Moscow.

You can do this in a return day trip to Moscow, just, but I recommend staying the night in Suzdal. That will give you the afternoon on the 1st day and the morning and early afternoon on the 2nd day to explore which should be enough time. You can get a bus from Moscow to Suzdal. However, there is only one bus a day and it is not very comfortable. A better option is to get a train to the nearby city of Vladimir and from there get a bus to Suzdal. There are multiple trains every day from Moscow and buses are almost every 30 minutes so you will not have to wait long in Vladimir.

Getting the train to Vladimir

Go to the state run website for Russian railways . In the departure station, click (or type) ‘MOSKVA’, in the arrival station type ‘VLADIMIR”, select your departure date (and return if you will go back to Moscow the next day) and click on the buy ticket button. You will have multiple trains to choose from. The fastest trains do the journey in about 1 hour 45 minutes. Be sure to check which of the Moscow train stations your train will depart from. More than likely this will be Mockva Kurskaia. Whichever station it is, you can get there very easily by using the metro .

Getting Bus from Vladimir to Suzdal

When you arrive at the train station, follow everyone else that is leaving the train station. When you get outside, if you look across the street, you will see the bus station. The facilities in the bus and train station are pretty basic. the train station is a little better so if you want a coffee or something to eat, I would get it there.

In the bus station go to the ticket office and get a single ticket to Suzdal. Something like “odin billet Suzdal” should be enough to be understood. The ticket costs 98.50 rubles so its easier to have a 100 ruble note to get change from.

My ticket to Suzdal is bus number 159, platform 10 at 12:00 and seat number 6.

When you have your ticket, go outside to the platform listed on the ticket and wait for the bus. Simple really!

Not the actual bus in the end. The bus was more of a minivan.

Staying the night in Suzdal

There are a lot of accommodation options available in Suzdal. The place i stayed is Suzdal Hotel . It is actually a house and they have a few rooms available. The breakfast that is included is very very good. Trust me on this. They will even collect you from the bus station in Suzdal and bring you back the next day.

Returning to Vladimir (and Moscow)

To return to Vladimir, just repeat these steps in the opposite direction – return to the bus station in Suzdal, buy a ticket to Vladimir and continue your onward journey in Russia. Simples! 😉

I went to Suzdal over 13years ago for Christmas, I was on an on the go tour and they organised the train for us which was a very interesting journey. I would love to go back and explore longer. I am definitely impressed that you have done it on your own and it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure :).

Hi Melissa, it certainly was an adventure that’s for sure! Though sometimes, there is something to be said for letting other people take care of things for you and getting to relax and not be too stressed.

Moscow is a place with an intriguing and enigmatic history. Suzdal seems to be a charming place with a rich heritage. As you have mentioned it seems to be a living museum of sorts. Nice step by step instruction on getting to Suzdal from Moscow. This is indeed an invaluable resource for first-time travelers to Russia.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I hope some people find it useful!

Thanks for recommending the Suzdal Hotel, since I prefer to stay in small cozy places with good breakfast. And the service of taking the guests from and to the bus station in Suzdal is a great plus!

Yeah I agree. I would rather stay in a family type place than a bigger place too!

I have never heard of this town and it sounds like a great place to visit if you are already in Moscow. Your instructions are very helpful and I like how you put a photo of the ticket.

You’re welcome Candy. If you don’t speak the language, Russia can be difficult to get around.

Fantastic detail and extremely useful post for anyone wanting to explore outside of Moscow. Suzdal does sound fascinating.

Thanks Michael!

This seems like quite an experience! I am surprised that I haven’t heard of Suzdal before but as soon as I go to Moscow, I will have to do a day trip to there. Is a day trip enough to explore Suzdal?

Hey Lydia, you certainly can! If you go early enough in the day to Vladimir, you can probably get 6-7 hours in Suzdal.

This is a great post with quite a few good details. Pics looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

Wow, you are adventurous! I spent years upon years in Russia and never made it to Suzdal. Never realized Vladimir was less than 2 hrs away from Moscow.

Thanks Jenia. Russia is a huge place. You could live there your entire life and not see it all!

Thanks for the instructions. If I ever want to visit Suzdal I now know how to get there from Moscow via Vladimir.

You’re welcome!

Suzdal sounds really lovely! I need to travel to more places where there will be snow rather than just constantly chasing the sun 😉

I know what you mean! After 4 months of winter in Russia though, I was craving the sun so much!

' src=

I had never heard of Suzdal until now. Thank you for introducing me to a new place. It looks so calm and quiet under the snow. What are some things to do in Suzdal?

I think it is the sort of place you go to get away from the craziness of big cities and have some slower, quiet time. If my memory is correct, they also have a cucumber festival once a year every July. Apparently the cucumbers of the area are very good!
