England FAQ's

Perhaps the most important thing about England was its impact on the world through its royal family , having once ruled over an empire where the sun never set. You can experience England`s royal past and present by visiting sites like Buckingham Palace , Westminster Abbey (with Big Ben ), and Sandringham House , just to name a few. Many other noteworthy characteristics that make England desirable to tourists come directly from the royals` historic influence. Over 1,500 castles , most of which were built on orders or with the blessing of past kings and queens, are open to the public today, as are hundreds and hundreds of historic palaces, stately homes, and manors constructed by members of the nobility. Also tied to the royal family, throughout hundreds of years of history, is the Church of England, whose cathedrals attract millions of tourists and pilgrims to England each year. Canterbury Cathedral , in Kent, is the headquarters of the Church of England. St. Paul`s Cathedral is a landmark in the London skyline and is not to be missed either. England is known the world over for its natural beauty, seen everywhere from its beautiful coastline and seaside towns such as Brighton and Blackpool to its quaint villages and breathtaking national park system (of which the Lake District, Peak District , and the Yorkshire Dales are three of the most popular parks, not just in England but in all of Europe). Finally, England is known for its culture , which still heavily impacts the world today. It ranges from a long literary, artistic, and intellectual tradition , to festivals that celebrate both England`s long history and the cultures of the people who are more recent arrivals. With such a rich cultural tapestry, is it any wonder that England is also known for its authentic souvenir shopping (ranging from wines and cheeses to English wool)? (London is also a world-class city when it comes to luxury shopping and cutting-edge fashion .)

The best places to visit in England depend on how much time you have to explore the country! If you have a week or less, we suggest staying close to London , the capital of England and the United Kingdom, and one of the most important cities in the world. You could spend weeks and weeks in London and not see absolutely everything it has to offer, but three or four days at least will be sufficient in experiencing the best of the best. In the Thames River Valley , you can visit such towns as Windsor , home to the eponymous castle that is also a royal residence; and the epicenter of English-language higher education, Oxford . Speaking of higher education, Cambridge , home to another storied institution, is less than an hour away by train from London, as is surrounding East Anglia . If you have more than a week to explore the country, you can pick and choose a little more when it comes to how many places you can visit and for how long. The Land of Shakespeare is the area where The Bard himself spent his most formative years, mostly in Stratford-upon-Avon . Less than an hour to the south and southwest you will find perhaps England`s most charming countryside escape: The Cotswolds , and the nearby cities of Cheltenham and Gloucester . South West England has even more beautiful cities and sights to explore, ranging from its largest city, Bristol , to the iconic prehistoric Stonehenge monument, to the legendary seaside resort of Bath and the coastal cities of Plymouth and Exeter . Another seaside resort on the southern coast that is very popular is Brighton , located to the east of Southampton . Heading north into The Midlands , you have Birmingham , the largest city, and the smaller cities of Coventry and Nottingham are featured prominently in legends that have endured for centuries. The North , part industrial and part agricultural, is one of the most bustling and diverse parts of England. You can find one of an assortment of vacation experiences in the distinctive Yorkshire region, as well as in North West England , where such unforgettable cities as Manchester and Liverpool are just a skip and a jump from the Lake District and the country`s largest lake, Windermere . After a lake getaway, head 45 minutes north to Hadrian`s Wall and follow the path all the way from Cumbria to Tyne and Wear in North East England .

England is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Naturally, as a country with rich history and distinct natural beauty, people vacation here all twelve months of the year. The shoulder seasons are recommended over other times of the year, however. The months of April, May and early June comprise the first shoulder season, and the second shoulder season begins in the middle of September , lasting through the end of October . During this time, lines at key tourist attractions should be shorter, and prices for travel and accommodations will be off their summertime peaks. People who visit England in the winter will be wowed as dustings of snow routinely occur across the north of the country, and less frequently in the south. By the spring, daylight hours have become extended and the precipitation England is known for slowly makes way for drier and more pleasant conditions. Those conditions can also be enjoyed in the autumn, just before the Christmas markets open for business in cities and towns across the country. Temperatures peak in the 60s and 70s across the country in spring and summer, with readings retreating under 60 by late October. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit England .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities, and a minimum of 4 nights in London.

Whatever your pleasure, transportation in England is modern, easy to navigate and fits a variety of budget ranges. The best way to travel in England ultimately depends on your goals: Do you want to travel by train in England, or maybe you want to visit as many cities as possible or exploring the towns dotted throughout the country; if so, driving may be the way to go. By Car: If you want to enjoy the countryside at your own pace, renting a car is a great way to see England. England`s road network is one of the most highly-developed in the world, and freeways and highways connect all large population centers with one another. Two-lane country streets and avenues are also great for exploring via automobile. It`s a roughly four-hour drive (excluding traffic) from London to Manchester, and it is a similar drive time from London to Plymouth. It is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from London to Birmingham. For more information on getting around by car, check out: Driving in England . By Train and/or Ferry: The train system in England is administered by National Rail. It is one of the most extensive systems in the world and one of the easiest to use as well. Handicapped accessibility is available in most major and mid-sized train stations. Train stations are connected to a number of airports in England, making it easy for visitors to move directly to the city center. (Such airports that have train stations include London-Heathrow, London-Gatwick, London-Stansted, Luton, Birmingham, and Manchester.) Train journeys between London and Manchester usually take about two-and-a-half hours, and 90 minutes between London and Birmingham. Also, another related mode of transportation that will come in useful for travelers will be the London Underground, administered by Transport for London (TfL), which connects all of Greater London on 11 lines and with 270 stops. The Eurostar trains, operating separately from the National Rail, leave from London St Pancras International train station and utilize the Channel Tunnel to connect London with Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Marseille. There are train-to-ferry connections in multiple cities, most of which connect the southern coast with the Channel Islands and France: Dover, Newhaven, Portsmouth, Southampton, Lymington, Poole, Weymouth, and Penzance.

England, like the other constituent nations of the United Kingdom, uses the pound sterling (£). US dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for pounds upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the country. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in the United Kingdom .

The British Museum is a ticket to relics that reveal some two million years of human history. Feel small standing beneath the colossal presence of Rameses II and contrast the myth and reality of Troy with the graphic world of Manga. This London highlight will take you on a journey of time travel.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum takes you on an unfathomable discovery of the formation of the solar system and its path to the present. Trace the origin of our species under the shade of a T. rex and glimpse rare meteorites straight from the surface of Mars. If this doesn’t shake you, the earthquake simulator most certainly will.

Victoria and Albert

The Victoria and Albert Museum is an encounter with the very best of human creativity in almost every medium. Here you will design your own bioplastic bag, step behind the creative lens of Christian Dior and take a literal walk in history’s shoes admiring a 2,000 strong collection spanning 3,000 years.

Best museums in England

A cultural epicentre of the planet steeped in royal heritage, the museums of England sparkle like the Crown Jewels. Let Trafalgar guide you through the very best the region has to offer.

Fish & Chips

It’s hard to separate the partnership of fish 'n' chips. Try this traditional meal both from a gourmet restaurant and a local 'chippie' wrapped in newspaper. Always with lashings of salt and vinegar on top.

Sunday Roast

Embrace the traditional English Sunday lunch with roast meats, a side of vegetables and an indulgent topping of gravy. The joy of this simple culinary experience is best served in a traditional English pub complete with football on the screen and a few stouts.

Full English breakfast

The full English breakfast is a requisite of a trip to England. A hearty plate piled with fried bacon, grilled tomatoes, buttered toast, mushrooms, eggs, beans, and black puddingis hard to resist.

Best food in England

Food is at the heart of every journey when you travel to England. This is a country of warm and hearty meals, our trips will show you the very best of it.

What to pack for England

People packing for a tour

With a high chance of experiencing four seasons in one day, an umbrella is a must when visiting England, both for rainy days and occasions when the sun beams down.

Digital maps

It's always good to have a backup of digital maps on standby when you're out exploring in your own time. Download them prior to your trip so you can reach them even when your phone is offline.

Travel adaptor

Though many hotels will have adaptors available for use, being prepared with your own will ensure you're always charged and ready to go.

A good book

With a seemingly infinite list of parks found in England, don't forget to pack a novel and immerse yourself in a good book should the occasion arise.

With days full of adventure and numerous souvenirs tempting your strolls, a day pack will ensure your hands always remain free. Split the weight across your back with a double strap bag for extra comfort.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

More information about England

The patchwork countryside of England has gifted the country the nickname of the ‘ green and pleasant land ’, and it’s true that the rural parts of England are a haven of idyllic rolling fields and charming country villages. On the other hand, England is home to innovative cities and industrial centres, with vast urban sprawls and quaint historic towns. The capital, London , is a global metropolis, known for its royal heritage and stately architecture. If you travel to England , you’ll encounter a diverse range of people and landscapes, from modern cityscapes to medieval castles and rugged coastlines.

England is part of the United Kingdom , along with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland . One of the most popular destinations in Europe, a trip to England is the chance to walk in the footsteps of a variety of cultural icons, from Shakespeare to The Beatles or the infamous King Henry VIII ! Whilst the urban centres of Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham or Bristol take centre stage on a tour of England , if you venture off the beaten path you’ll find charming seaside towns, spectacular national parks and historic heritage sites scattered throughout this pocket-sized country.

One thing’s for sure, a vacation to England will be filled with historic sights and cultural treasures. From millennia-old stone circles to vast stately homes, at every turn, England unveils its complex and fascinating island story. With some of the best museums and galleries in the world, a diverse and delicious national cuisine and a well-connected transport network, take a trip to England to discover a small country with a big personality.

History of England

The early history of England is characterized as a story of invasion and conquest. Built between 5000 and 4000 years ago, Stonehenge is the most famous and ancient site in the country, a must-see if you travel to England. The Celts were one of the earliest known societies that settled in England , but around 43 AD , the Romans successfully invaded, incorporating  England into the Roman Empire . Relics of this era, such as the Roman town of Bath , Cirencester , Hadrian’s Wall and Fishbourne Roman Palace , are some of the most fascinating things to see on a tour of England . With the decline of the Roman Empire in the 5th-century , England was settled by seafaring Saxons , although both Celtic and Roman communities continued to flourish, particularly in the northern parts of the country. Between the 9th and 11th-centuries, England was subject to a number of surprise invasions by Vikings from Scandinavia, and if you visit the city of York , you’ll be able to trace this turbulent period in the island’s history. Finally, in 1066, the Norman conquest of England marked the end of the ongoing invasions and led to the signing of the legendary Magna Carta which guaranteed the rights of all free men.

The Tudor period, with its notorious monarchs and gruesome religious conflicts, also saw the arrival of Renaissance culture. Historic buildings such as Hever Castle, Leeds Castle , the Tower of London or Hampton Court Palace are amazing places to visit to uncover the story of Tudor rule in England . The monarchy continued to be the most powerful force in the country up until the English Civil War of the 17th-century , which resulted in the creation of the Bill of Rights in 1689,  transferring power to Parliament. If you travel to Londo n, visiting the Houses of Parliament in Westminster is a fascinating insight into the history of democracy in England.

The 18th-century saw the rise of the Industrial Revolution which dramatically changed society in England and spread throughout the world. Industrial centres such as Manchester grew in importance during this period. Whilst the 20th-century included two world wars , it also saw the cultural revolution of the ‘Swinging 60s’ and the rise of world-famous English musicians such as The Beatles and the Rolling Stones . A trip down Carnaby Street in London will whisk you back these heady days!

Nature in England

Although England is known for its unpredictable weather, it’s not all grey skies and rain! The climate is mild, with cool winters and moderately warm summers, and it rains throughout the year, so be sure to pack an umbrella if you travel to England ! This temperate climate makes for a beautiful landscape, awash with greenery, wildflowers and wildlife. If you can escape the large cities, you’ll be rewarded with the peaceful charms of the countryside and the chance to get in touch with the England that inspired poets such as William Wordsworth and Robert Browing and painters such as John Constable and Turner.

With a coastline of almost 20,000 miles and 10 national parks , there are plenty of natural wonders to explore on a vacation to England. A UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Lake District is home to some of the spectacular and characteristic landscapes in England. From the tranquil waters of Lake Windermere to the towering peak of Scafell Pike , the Lake District is a land of dramatic natural beauty.

For idyllic beaches and sandy coves, you can’t beat the coastlines of Devon and Cornwall , England’s most popular summer destination. You could even mistake these beautiful beaches for the Mediterranean when the sun is shining! Surfing is particularly popular in these parts of the country.

For that quintessential English countryside of your imagination, you can’t beat the county of Kent , known as the ‘Garden of England’ . Manicured flower gardens, rolling meadows and patchwork farmlands set a picturesque scene for countryside walks or laid-back picnics, whilst the Kent coastline is known for its eye-catching white cliffs of Dover and pebblestone beaches.

When it comes to wildlife, you’ll find an abundance of bird and animal species if you know where to look! A number of deer parks are scattered throughout the country, whilst a trip to the countryside is a paradise for bird-watchers. Even in the most developed urban areas, green spaces are abundant, with London alone boasting around 3,000 public parks!

Culture in England

What would a vacation to England be without a night spent in a cozy old-world pub or a delicious afternoon tea? Indeed, England is known for its social and gastronomic traditions, be it a pint with friends, or a traditional Sunday roast dinner with family. Despite this, English culture is ever-evolving, a product of its diverse population. You’re just as likely to find a fish and chip shop on the high street as you are to find an Indian restaurant or a French bakery. This is the essence of modern English culture, a smorgasbord of influences from around the world, in some part the product of the days of the British Empire.

Culture, in all its forms, is highly valued here, just take a look at the amazing museums, countless art galleries and well-preserved heritage sites found throughout England . From the world-renowned British Museum in London, home to some of the most precious historical treasures in the world, to the Cavern Club in Liverpool , a place of pilgrimage for music lovers, the English celebrate and preserve their cultural heritage with pride and passion.

England also has rich folkloric traditions, with characters such as Robin Hood and King Arthur featuring heavily in the popular imagination. Nowadays, England is known for its music, literature and arts and cinema, and wherever you are in the world, it’s likely that you’re familiar with at least some English musicians, artists or writers.

Our England Tours

With its wide cultural influence, England may feel familiar on a first visit, even if never visited before. However, this beloved country packs enormous variety into its relatively small land area. While it takes time to discover England’s wealth of unexpected delights, it’s not unusual to leave yearning to return again and again for another United Kingdom vacation.

Certainly, there’s the ‘Royal’ aspect, manifests physically through the palaces and other residences of the royal family. This is one of England’s biggest attractions for visitors, while Idyllic villages, wild moorland, castles, country houses, cathedral spires, the ubiquitous inn or pub, crashing waves against the country’s shoreline, and the ‘Englishness’ of the people (a vast subject on its own), all round out the picture of this charismatic destination.

A UK vacation encompasses all these things, yet England stands apart, from its beautiful northern regions to its well-heeled capital, London . Each diverse part of the country has left its mark on England’s culture , cuisine , and citizens.

England Vacation and Trip Highlights

England can be divided roughly into three sections, each with deep and distinct historical and linguistic roots. These can be further divided into regions, which in turn consist of counties most of which also have long histories.

Best places to visit in England

London, the capital city of both England and the United Kingdom, is a global capital of finance, fashion, entertainment and culture. You will find the rest of England to be very different, and to be honest if you only visit London you haven’t ‘seen England.’ However, because distances are short and the rail system top-notch, you can easily take day excursions to a number of iconic places such as Windsor, Oxford and Cambridge, Brighton, Stratford upon Avon, and many others to enhance your UK vacation package.

In London, the list of attractions simply doesn’t end. Tour Buckingham Palace (in the summer, while the Royal Family is away), the Tower of London, and the many beautiful and serene parks, all centrally located. Take a cruise on the iconic River Thames, see concerts and performances and spend a night at the theatre or one of the countless vibrant clubs. Explore amazing museums and art galleries. dine at your choice of restaurant, or have a drink at a pub dating back hundreds of years. The choice is truly endless

North of London lies the Midlands. A name that perhaps does not conjure up the charm of other regions in England. But almost every metropolitan area has something historical or cultural to offer on a United Kingdom vacation. An example of this is Georgian Stamford, of which the author, George Elliot waxed lyrically.

The North has its own distinct character, be it the people of the countryside. Industrial cities thrive side by side with the wildest and most evocative countryside imaginable. Three areas that epitomize this are the Lake District with its pastoral charm and homage to the poet, Wordsworth, the Yorkshire Dales, home of the Bronte sisters, and the North Yorkshire Moors, home of the renowned James Herriot stories.

Other significant places to add to your England vacation list are Devon and Cornwall with their rustic charm and beautiful coastlines (don’t miss out on the untamed National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor). The Cotswolds, possibly representing the essence of the English countryside, the many cathedral cities of Canterbury, York, Salisbury, Lincoln, Gloucester, Ely, Winchester etc., the Spa towns such as Bath and Harrogate, and the multitude of beach resorts which dot the lengthy, attractive coastline.

England Travel Information

England weather.

England has often been stereotyped as being cold and grey but this is not entirely accurate. Temperatures rarely get very cold or very hot, and while the country certainly gets rain, it is really not as wet as rumour has it. London alone has lower annual rainfall than Paris , New York, or Sydney , and it's not uncommon for parts of the country to go without rain for weeks. Winter and Fall are usually the wettest seasons when the weather is often very changeable and at times quite windy. However, be prepared for unsettled weather at any time of the year and make sure to check the weather forecast if you plan to spend much of your England vacation outdoors.

English Food

Traditional English dishes still exist such as bread and cheese (ploughman’s lunch), roasts, game pies, oxtail soup and both fresh and seawater fish. Other meals including fish and chips, which were once urban street food eaten from a newspaper with salt and malt vinegar, and pies and sausages with mashed potatoes, onions, and gravy, are now matched in popularity by curries from the Indian subcontinent, and stir-fries based on Chinese and Thai cuisines. French cuisine and Italian cuisine are also now widely adopted.

Whatever your interests, England is ready to indulge them. From energetic pastimes such as hiking or walking to cultural pursuits such as the theatre, museums, art galleries and historical sites, England has it all while on a UK vacation.

Summer is stunning in England but is also the most popular time for tourists. To avoid the crowds and enjoy comfortable weather outside of summer, we recommend you visit in spring, from March to May, or in fall, from September to November.

England, Scotland and Ireland end Dublin Tour

  • In-depth Cultural

England, Scotland and Ireland end Dublin

Our tour was London, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Liverpool, London. This was a bi-lingual tour with emphasis on Spanish - we are bi-lingual so not that much of a bother but non-Spanish speaking tourists would likely not enjoy this aspect. The English of the guides varied widely with the London guide Richard being beautifully fluent and knowledgeable in both languages. It's important to understand you will have multiple guides. We walked an average of 7 miles a day and covered nearly 1,500 miles by luxury coach. This kind of travel can be exhausting if you are not prepared. The first two days the buses arrived 2 hours late due to the Rail Strike in London. Now for the upside: The tour guides were great and kept everything on-task. They knew the areas pretty well and they were accommodating despite their challenged English. The hotels were way better than expected and included excellent breakfasts with lots of options - I would say 3.5 to 4.0 stars. Yes UK hotels can be quirky - like you might not have a huge bed and the shower faucet make take some time to figure out but they were excellently located. I cannot say enough about the general courtesy and service of the UK citizens - they generally put the USA to shame. From servers to museum guides everyone seemed genuinely happy to be working and accommodating of tourists. The food everywhere we went was great and well priced -- more affordable than expected. Still hard to find Coke on ice though! haha. The tour itself was comprehensive and the stops were breathtaking. The two ferry trips were a blast -- these are really mini-cruise ships. We came home exhausted but completely satisfied. We saw attractions we would have never seen like Alnwick and Caerfornan castles on our own that were incredible. Being able to stop in Liverpool was a real highlight and we paid on our own to do the Beatles sites and it was well worth it. (So was the Beatles museum). We would likely use Europamundo again, even if it was bi-lingual because they were so efficient and a great value.

Best of UK & Ireland Tour

Best of UK & Ireland

Our tour leader Branden was excellent. Very knowledgeable & kept everything running smoothly. He was very helpful & knew the best places for comfort stops in between destinations. The destinations we visited were all pretty cool. Wish that we could have spent more time at some of them (like Stratford Upon-Avon). The main thing that I would say would make the tours better would be the quality of the hotels. A few of them were very nice (Mercure Cardiff, The Clayton, The Moxy), but some of them were very poor....the 2 Ibis hotels were awful. The beds were uncomfortable (a mattress topper, not even a true mattress) & the 2nd one the carpets were deplorable (stains all over). The Hotel Arrochar left a lot to be desired. The only good thing about it was the view. The place smelled of mold/water damage. I understand that it is a "historic" hotel, but it should be kept up properly for the safety of the guests. I would have rated the tour experience "Excellent" had it not been for the low quality of some of the hotels.

What people love about england, ireland and scotland tours.

Guides were great and the tour was an excellent way to see lots of places in a short amount of time
Very nice itinerary ... jam packed days and evenings. I chose not to do any of the extra evening excursions that were offered so I was able to use the time to explore every overnight stop on my own. The tour guide was amazing... so full of knowledge about all the countries/areas we visited.
The driver, Billy, and tour director, Speedy, made the trip very interesting and informative. They were both very helpful. We were disappointed that some of the hotel didn’t really cater for the older tourist with rooms a fair distance from reception, climbing stairs and dragging our luggage.

The stage is set for Europe ’s summer festival of football: the Euro 2024 finals in Germany . We now know all the teams who have qualified for the continent’s greatest football tournament, and when and where they will play their opening matches.

England and Scotland qualified emphatically. Sadly, Wales went out on penalties to Poland, who along with Georgia and Ukraine were last to qualify.

Euro 2024 kicks off in Munich on Friday 14 June and ends with the final in Berlin on Sunday 14 July.

Where and when are Scotland’s group-stage games?

14 June v Germany in Munich (the tournament’s opening match)

19 June v Switzerland in Cologne

23 June v Hungary in Stuttgart

Where and when are England’s group-stage games?

16 June v Serbia in Gelsenkirchen

20 June v Denmark in Frankfurt

25 June v Slovenia in Cologne

What are the basic travel mechanics?

Fortunately for supporters of England and Scotland, all the games – except for the opening match between Germany and Scotland in Munich – are in western Germany.

For Cologne, where England will play Slovenia and Scotland will play Switzerland, surface travel looks best: ideally a Eurostar train from London to Brussels and a connection from there.

But it will be much cheaper for groups of supporters to go by road. Many people will take cars across, and the Dover-Dunkirk or Harwich-Hook of Holland ferries are probably best – though Newcastle to Amsterdam and Hull to Rotterdam are also feasible, if expensive.

There’s a wide choice of flights on budget airlines from across England and Scotland to Germany , but they won’t be low-cost during the tournament for key games. It could be smart to fly to somewhere close to Germany instead.

For example, to reach Gelsenkirchen, the venue for England’s first game against Serbia, Eindhoven in the Netherlands is an option. Remarkably, for those flying out on 15 June and returning on 17 June, Ryanair has flights between London Stansted and Eindhoven for £15 each way.

For Scotland’s game against Hungary on 23 June in Stuttgart, you could fly on easyJet from Edinburgh to Basel in Switzerland and get a cheap train from there; out on 21 June, back on 24 June is currently £184 return.

Will travelling around the host nation be easy?

Yes, because German Railways has a vast, high-density network, with low fares if you don’t take the fastest expresses.

There is no real need to book anything in advance – you can buy tickets on the day. The network will feel the strain on match days, but trains will be supplemented by long-distance coaches.

If you’re driving your own car, the autobahns will be busy – and you will also find parking in cities and near venues difficult.

All ticket holders will get 36 hours of free local transport around each match.

Which brings us to the thorny question of tickets...

All group-match tickets have been sold, and the Uefa resale platform has now closed. The organisers say “There will be no further opportunities to resell tickets.”

Uefa adds: “Tickets reserved for knockout-stage matches will be sold during the tournament upon the qualification of the teams for the respective matches.”

Or you can settle for the fan zones – which will be in attractive locations such as Cologne’s old town, the Altstadt.

What about accommodation?

Unlike Paris, where hotel rates are steadily falling ahead of the Olympic Games , demand for rooms in and near host venues is rising – along with prices. For many fans, Germany is extremely accessible.

In Cologne, on the night of Scotland’s group game against Switzerland (19 June), many properties are sold out, and basic budget hotel rooms are selling for £400.

But you can save approximately half the cost by booking in Dusseldorf, about 20 minutes by train from Cologne. Go further, to Aachen (less than an hour away), and rates halve again.

While many Berlin hotels are sold out on the night of the final, a very good hotel room in Leipzig (the Amano Home ) is only €79 (£69) on the night of the final, with trains taking 75 minutes to reach the German capital.

Is it worth waiting until the knockout stages?

Quite possibly. A valid strategy is to do nothing now and see if England and Scotland progress beyond the group stage. From then onwards, everything becomes easier – pressure on transport and accommodation eases because lots of fans sadly go home.

Over the four-day spell of the quarter-finals, from 29 June to 2 July, could be the prime time to be in Germany.

And, if you are feeling optimistic, you could even book a cheap flight to Berlin for the final on 14 July. Ryanair is currently selling flights on 11 July, returning on 16 July, for just £137 from Edinburgh to the German capital.

What shall I do between the matches?

This guide focuses on the England and Scotland host cities, in order of their matches. But the best of the rest will follow.

Munich (Scotland v Germany, 14 June)

The Bavarian capital is the favourite German city of many travellers. The Altstadt, the old town, has the beautiful Marienplatz – dominated by the neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (new town hall), which stretches across its northern side. Shortly before 11am and noon each day, crowds gather for a glockenspiel performance that features a Bavarian knight beating a French challenger in a jousting tournament. For the best view of Munich (and, on a clear day, the Bavarian Alps), visit the tower of St Peter’s Church, just south.

Eat and drink

Warm summer evenings will mainly be spent on cafe terraces and in beer gardens, but the state-owned Hofbrauhaus is well worth visiting for the dizzying choreography of the well-attired waiting staff and the conviviality of the location – augmented from time to time with all the oompah you would expect from a Bavarian band.

Gelsenkirchen (England v Serbia, 16 June)

The Ruhr is off many tourists’ itineraries, but the former coal and steel hub for Germany’s economic and military might is fascinating. Gelsenkirchen itself is actually little more than a northern suburb of Essen (don’t show this to any locals). The industrial archaeology is remarkable, with much of the former Zollverein coal mine handed back to nature – and visitors. You can clamber, carefully, around this Unesco-listed gem. And the German Football Museum is just minutes away in Dortmund (see below).

Essen in central Essen: it is difficult to go wrong, but I like the Pfefferkorn Essen. South of the city centre, Il Pomodoro is a reliable Italian.

Cologne (Scotland v Switzerland, 19 June; England v Slovenia, 25 June)

Cologne is a city designed for walking. Start by climbing the bell tower of the dom (cathedral); the 509 steps are challenging, though you can pause halfway up to admire the glocken (bells). From the public gallery at a height of 97m, you get a fine view of the old town – and some ungainly modern buildings that were erected after the Second World War, in which 90 per cent of the city was destroyed. The Museum Ludwig, adjacent to the dom , celebrates modern art by the likes of Dali and Warhol. For 19th-century works and earlier, the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum is a dramatic modern structure.

Eating, drinking and shopping are the main interests of the locals in what is arguably Germany’s friendliest big city. The local Kolsch beer – light and well hopped – will cheer even losing fans. The tastiest brand is Gaffel, whose home ground is the Gaffel Haus on Alter Markt. But the atmosphere is even more convivial at the Brauhaus Sion, which also serves up sauerbraten : beef marinated for what seems like months, which melts in your mouth in minutes.

Frankfurt (England v Denmark, 20 June)

Europe’s financial hub is far more rewarding than you might imagine. It has a traditionally restored old town, complete with the chance to ascend the tower of St Bartholomew’s (location for medieval coronations of holy Roman emperors), though with some questionable 1960s embellishments. Among the wealth of attractions in this wealthy city: Goethe’s House, where the national poet was born in 1749.

Goethe could have been talking to football fans when he wrote: “If you’ve never eaten while crying you don’t know what life tastes like.” Cross one of the bridges to go south of the Main and sample ebbelwei – apple wine, a cousin of cider – in Ebbelwoi Unser, where you can also dine on sausage, dumplings and sauerkraut.

Stuttgart (Scotland v Hungary, 23 June)

The capital of Baden-Wurttemberg, a big, prosperous southwestern state, feels different from many other German cities: with hilly surroundings and a sense of space, it is a location for getting out and about. Top attraction: the Mercedes-Benz Museum. But if you want to be alone after the match, try Schloss Solitude, just west of the city.

Could this be Germany’s most amazing bar? Jigger & Spoon is a modern take on the speakeasy bar, two floors below the city streets in the vault of a bank, which you reach by going into the office block at Gymnasiumstrasse 33 and taking the lift down two floors. Somehow it includes a cigar lounge. For dinner, the Stuttgart Rathskeller in the basement of the city hall is unbeatable.

Best of the rest – Simon Calder’s top recommendation for each of the other host cities

The wall may have come down in 1989, but 35 years on, the scars of the division of the German capital are still evident. The Palace of Tears at Friedrichstrasse railway station, where people checked out of East Germany to the West, is now a museum, and provides a profoundly emotional experience.

Controversy drags on about England’s third goal in the 1966 World Cup Final: the German Football Museum even has a special investigation into the linesman’s questionable decision against West Germany, using an interactive media station. Unsurprisingly, there is rather more focus on the occasions when German players won the Weltmeisterschaft (in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014).

The Church of St Nicholas was built in 1874 by the great British architect Gilbert Scott. It was devastated during the Second World War by Allied bombers, but the spire survived and remains one of Europe’s tallest church structures. The crypt contains a small museum commemorating the wartime destruction of Hamburg and the victims of the Third Reich. Nearby, visit Altona Fischmark, the ornate fish market where The Beatles used to breakfast after their all-night shows on the Reeperbahn.

One of Germany’s most rewarding cities owes much of its beauty to the Rhine; a riverside highway is now confined to a tunnel. Take the Weisse Flotte €20 Panorama-Fahrt (no sniggering, please) to appreciate the setting and learn more about the monuments.

In this fine East German city, do mention the Cold War. The Zeitgeschictliches Forum focuses on four decades of state communism. You are taken through the whole sorry story, from the Nazi era via the postwar carve-up of Germany decided in Potsdam, and spy cameras disguised as cigarette packets, to the night in 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down.

By Jess Sharp , Money team

My journey into the world of manifestation (the belief that you can attract success in your life through positive affirmations and visualisation) has taken me places I never thought I'd go.

Like woods in Edenbridge, where I stood meditating under a tree in the pouring rain. I don't yet know where my journey will end (I've been hoping for an engagement ring but my boyfriend hasn't yet seen my visualisations), but it started with a conversation with Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, one of many people who say manifestation has transformed their lives.

"About a year ago, there was something happening and I thought we just need two grand to cover the expense," Jamie, a former dancer from London, told me. "The following day £2,000 landed in my account."

It sounded like a coincidence to me, too.

But Jamie was adamant. His husband calls him "the master manifester" because of his "ability to bring in money".

"It's happened on so many occasions, like four, five times," he said. "I've become very clear on what I want and the amount of money I need and literally it can be within 24 hours that I get a phone call for a job and it's almost identical to what I asked for money-wise."

When I asked the now-psychic where the £2,000 actually came from, he said it was payment for a modelling job he had been offered.

"With manifesting you don't get caught up in the how, and often it comes in ways that you don't expect," he added, explaining it could come as the result of a claim after being in a car crash.

"It's not always coming in the way that you think but money is out there for us to take in the world. It's just having the confidence to receive it and we are worthy of it."

"Even if it is a placebo effect, does it matter?" he said.

The 43-year-old also believes he manifested his husband Fiongal after being diagnosed with cancer. While going through treatment and dating "a lot" of people, he decided to take matters into his own hands, or rather his own head, and started visualising his perfect partner.

"I decided to spend a good couple of weeks getting really, really, super clear in my mind what this person looked like. Then I started creating lists asking about personality traits, and all the things that I wanted that person to be," the former dancer said.

"The day I got the all clear from cancer I randomly met my husband and when I look at the list of the things I asked for, he pretty much ticks every single box. I really, really believe that is because I got super clear on what I wanted and I put that out to the universe to bring to me."

Jim Carrey and manifestation

If you think this is a new practice, it isn't. Jim Carrey was doing it back in the 90s. He famously wrote himself a $10m cheque for "acting services rendered" and dated it years in advance. Then in 1995, he was told he was going to make the exact amount for filming Dumb and Dumber.

The idea shot up in popularity again in 2006 after Rhonda Byrne published her self-help book The Secret.

Since then, it has hit every inch of the internet and has resurfaced on TikTok with videos posted under #manifesting accumulating a huge 13 billion views.

I tried to learn manifesting - I felt like an idiot

After hearing Jamie's story and seeing the idea was popular with so many people, I thought it best to try to learn manifestation myself. I mean, who wouldn't want money landing in their account and a work promotion from the universe?

As I stood in the woods, in the pouring rain, being told to imagine roots growing from the soles of my feet, I felt like an idiot.

I was soaking wet (of course I had forgotten a coat with a hood) and while my mind kept wandering through thoughts about being cold, if I'd hit traffic on the way home and how dirty my white trainers were getting, a gentle, soothing voice kept bringing me back to what I was supposed to be thinking about.

"How we are all connected, how the trees and plants produce oxygen that we breathe, and we breathe out carbon dioxide which they need to survive"

While some people focus their manifestation practices on being grateful to the universe, Tansy Jane Dowman believes we need to get "out of our heads, into our bodies", connect with nature and find our true selves before we can practice it successfully.

My meditation in the woods was just one part of a six-hour workshop run by Tansy, which aimed to send me off with a clearer vision of what I truly desired.

Tansy charges anywhere from £25 to £580 for her courses, which range from one-on-one sessions and an online six-week programme, to forest bathing workshops and weekend-long nature retreats.

But some courses have popped up online which cost more than £1,000.

Tansy started practising manifestation in 2018 after going through a difficult period in her life. She eventually quit her job in events management and started teaching others how to do it successfully.

"The way I manifest is not to focus on material wealth or gain. I would ask my clients what an abundant life means to them in terms of feelings, experiences, connections, people and places," she explained.

"The more authentic you are, the more of a beacon you become for those things to find you."

After spending time walking in the rain and meditating under a tree, Tansy and I sat in her dining room and explored some of the happiest moments in my life and the feelings I experienced. It became clear I like feeling accomplished, needed and excited.

We also spoke about challenging times, but the conversation focused on the positives, like how I had overcome them and what I had learned.

"It's so important to bring in your values with manifestation because sometimes we can get really confused with what we want, with social media especially," she told me.

Throughout her house, Tansy has a number of "abundance boards" proudly on display - some she has made with her children, others are from her annual January tradition of setting out her desires for the year.

"I've had some really wonderful goosebump things happen to me. I did a board at the beginning of 2020... I put a picture of a microphone on it. I just thought I really like that image and I didn't immediately place any meaning onto it," she said.

"Then as the world was shutting down for lockdown, I did a press event and I met a lady who worked for Wellbeing Radio and she wondered if I would be interested in trying out as a presenter."

She explained that some people will be very specific with their desires, like selecting a photo of the exact car they want, or the perfect house, but that isn't how manifestation works. There needs to be an element of trust in the universe giving them what they attract.

As we created my abundance board, which Tansy describes as being like a "personal algorithm", she told me to select images and words from heaps of magazines that called to me intuitively.

As you can see from the picture below, mine calls for being "financially fabulous", travelling, getting engaged (coughs loudly in earshot of boyfriend) and living stress-free.

And while I'd love a big cash injection, Tansy explained to me that money is "only a stepping stone to a feeling" and, ultimately, I'm aiming to create an emotion with it.

Manifesters more likely to go bankrupt

While all the manifestation believers I spoke to said there was no downside to the practice, a researcher has been looking into whether it really does pay off.

Based in Australia, Dr Lucas Dixon (who specialises in consumer psychology) created a scale from one to seven to rank a person's strength of belief and found those who practice it are more likely to have been victims of fraud and declared bankruptcy.

He said there was a "danger" that manifesting could become harmful if taken to an extreme level.

He found those who believe in manifesting tend to think more positively and have a confident attitude when it comes to success, and while that can be helpful in business, it can also cause them to take unnecessary risks.

"They weren't more objectively successful in terms of having higher income or higher education attainment," he said.

"We also found that they are more likely to believe in get-rich-quick schemes, more likely to take higher risks... to have risky financial investments and more likely to have investments in cryptocurrency rather than traditional stock."

Using the scale he created, Dr Dixon found those who have "very strong beliefs", ranking at a seven, were 40% more likely to have gone bankrupt.

"The danger comes in a couple of different forms," he said, explaining that a "worst case scenario" could see people getting into financial difficulty by being encouraged to "just look at the positives".

"Someone might say it's not harmful because it is really just thinking positively but I think even that can be harmful because of what you might call an opportunity cost," he said.

"You're spending time, energy and money doing something that doesn't have a lot of evidence behind it. We found it does make you feel good but you don't need to pay thousands to do it."

Okay, so back to me...

I did my manifestation course about two months ago, and I have done as I was instructed - my abundance board is up in sight inside the flat, and I often have a cup of coffee in front of it.

But, so far I'm still using a credit card, the most travelling I've done has been to work and back and there is still no rock on my finger. I have been given an annual pay rise, though, and would say I am less stressed.

Perhaps believing that I'm just doing my best and there's a chance that I'll be rewarded for that one day, eventually, in the future, maybe, is making me feel better... who knows?

Each week, Money blog readers share their thoughts on the subjects we've been covering, and over the last seven days your correspondence has been dominated by these topics...

  • Iceland's new slogan
  • Rising mortgage rates
  • Giving kids cash for grades

Iceland's new catchphrase

We learnt on Monday that Iceland had dropped its tagline "That's why mums go to Iceland", replacing it with "That's why we go to Iceland".

The move was made to reflect the store is for everybody, said brand ambassador Josie Gibson. Readers were split - with some feeling so strongly that they're prepared, they suggest, to sacrifice those frozen Greggs steak bakes forever...

I previously contacted Iceland about their slogan because I didn't think it did single dads justice, as dads can go to Iceland too. Their response was that people understood that it's not just mums that go to Iceland. It's about time they changed the message. Dave T
Neither I, my wife or my children will shop in Iceland again due to this stupidness and woke attitude. To hell with you [Iceland boss] Richard Walker. John

Banks hike mortgage rates

This week we reported that high street lenders such as Halifax, TSB, NatWest, Barclays, Leeds Building Society, HSBC and Coventry had all hiked mortgage rates.

You said...

With house prices at already extortionate levels, now mortgage rates rising again, is there any hope for first-time buyers? Honestly, the situation is so bleak, people may need to consider other countries. GenZ
Why would this happen? So many young couples struggling to get on the property ladder. I live in Dorset - a one-bedroom flat costs from £230,000. In Scotland, one can get a beautiful two-bed house for that price. Feel sorry for all couples living down in the South. Need huge deposits. Barbs
Why are they called high-street banks? Most banks in my town have closed. Martin J

Parents offering cash for good grades

A lot of views came in after our feature exploring the positives and negatives of parents incentivising good school grades with cash...

We had scores of comments on this - with a fairly even split...

We did it for our son at GCSE time. We think it made a difference of about a grade on most subjects. Got a two-grade lift on maths. Cost us £350. Thought it was good value as it has taught him how things work in the world. Andy
The whole world is built on a reward system which symbolises access to money commensurate with effort and excellence. The Nobel prize goes with a cash reward! Tom Deggs
Employees are offered incentives for achieving targets, so why not offer kids incentives for better grades? Claire228

But others had concerns...

I think it puts too much pressure on kids who are under enough pressure at exam time. Parents should encourage their kids to do the best they can, not add to their stress levels. Emma
Children should value their education without it being monetised. My parents expected my brother and I to have the motivation, maturity and self-discipline to work hard for our GCSEs. We both achieved all As and A*s. Eliza
When I was at school, from 1964-83, my parents never gave me money for good exam results, because "I should want to do well for myself". No matter what my grades were, they said that they would be proud of me if I had tried my best. Cash kills self-motivation. Nicola B

National insurance was cut this month, for the second time this year, from 10% to 8% on employee earnings between £12,570 and £50,270.

The change, announced by the chancellor in his March budget, impacts around 27 million payroll employees across the UK - starting this pay day.

The cut is worth almost £250 to someone earning £25,000 a year and almost £750 for those earning £50,000

Use our tool below for a rough guide to what tax changes can be expected for most people, as there are other variables not included which might affect how much tax you pay including being in receipt of the blind person's allowance or the marriage allowance. It also assumes you are not self-employed and are under pension age...

There are also national insurance cuts for the self-employed. This includes the scrapping of Class 2 contributions, as well as a reduction of the rate of Class 4 contributions from 9% to 6% for the £12,570 to £50,270 earnings bracket.

These will impact nearly two million self-employed people, according to the Treasury.

While many campaigners welcomed the national insurance announcement last month, they pointed out that the tax burden remains at record high levels for Britons - thanks in part to the threshold at which people start paying income tax being frozen, rather than rising with inflation.

The money story of the week has been mortgage rates - with a host of major lenders announcing hikes amid fears the Bank of England may delay interest rate cuts.

Swap rates - which dictate how much it costs to lend money - have risen on the back of higher than expected US inflation data, and concerns this could delay interest rate cuts there.

US trends often materialise elsewhere - though many economists are still expecting a base rate cut from 5.25% to 5% in the UK in June.

The reliable Bloomberg reported this week: "Still, while some economists have since scaled back their predictions for BOE cuts, most haven't changed expectations for a summer move.

"Analysts at Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group, Capital Economics and Bloomberg Economics are all among those still anticipating a shift toward easing in June."

The publication also quoted Sanjay Raja, chief UK economist at Deutsche Bank, as saying: "Markets have superimposed the US cycle on the UK, but the US and UK are on very different tracks.

"The UK is coming out of technical recession. Inflation is falling more convincingly. Pay settlements are following inflation expectations. And crucially, real policy rates in the UK will be higher than in the US."

None of this reassurance changes the fact that financial markets, which dictate swap rates, are pricing in delays.

This week's hikes came from Halifax, BM Solutions, TSB, NatWest, Virgin, Barclays, Accord, Leeds Building Society, HSBC and Coventry.

This is what average mortgage rates looked like as of Thursday...

The next Bank of England decision on rates comes on 9 May - and pretty much no one is expecting a cut from the 16-year high of 5.25% at that stage.

The family home where Captain Sir Tom Moore walked 100 laps to raise nearly £40m for the NHS during the first COVID lockdown is up for sale for £2.25m.

The Grade II-listed Old Rectory is described as a "magnificent seven-bedroom property" by estate agents Fine & Country.

In a video tour of the house, a sculpture of Captain Tom with his walking frame can be seen in the hallway, while a photo of the fundraising hero being knighted by the Queen is on a wall in the separate coach house building.

Introducing the property, an estate agent says in the tour video: "I'm sure you'll recognise this iconic and very famous driveway behind me as it was home to the late Captain Sir Tom Moore who walked 100 laps of his garden, raising over £37m for NHS charities."

It comes less than three months after the demolition of an unauthorised spa pool block in the grounds of the property in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire.

Speaking at an appeal hearing over that spa, Scott Stemp, representing Captain Tom's daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore and her husband, said the foundation named after the fundraising hero "is to be closed down" following a Charity Commission probe launched amid concerns about its management.

"Status symbol" pets are being given up by owners who get scared as they grow up, an animal charity has said, with the cost of living possibly paying a part in a rise in separations.

The Exotic Pet Refuge, which homes parrots, monkeys, snakes and alligators among others, says it receives referrals across the country, including from zoos and the RSPCA.

"They're a status symbol. People will say, 'OK, I'll have an alligator or a 10ft boa constrictor'," co-owner Pam Mansfield told the BBC.

"But when the animal gets big, they will get too frightened to handle them, and then the pet has to go."

She added people who want to get rid of the pets sometimes call zoos for help, which then call on her charity.

In some cases, owners don't have licences to own dangerous animals, she says, blaming a "lack of understanding" for what she says is a rise in the number of exotic animals needing to be rehomed.

She says people "just don't have the space" for some snakes, for example, with some growing to as much as 12ft and needing their own room.

The cost of living crisis has also forced owners to give their pets away, she says.

Her charity has also been affected by those increased costs, with the electricity bill rising to £10,000 a month at their highest, to fund things like heated pools for alligators.

Private car parks are accused of "confusing drivers" after introducing a new code of conduct - despite "doing all they can" to prevent an official government version.

The code of practice launched by two industry bodies - British Parking Association and the International Parking Community - includes a ten-minute grace period for motorists to leave a car park after the parking period they paid for ends.

It also features requirements for consistent signage, a single set of rules for operators on private land and an "appeals charter".

Private parking businesses have been accused of using misleading and confusing signs, aggressive debt collection and unreasonable fees.

That comes after a government-backed code of conduct was withdrawn in June 2022, after a legal challenges by parking companies.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "We're flabbergasted that the BPA and the IPC have suddenly announced plans to introduce their own private parking code after doing all they can over the last five years to prevent the official government code created by an act of Parliament coming into force.

"While there are clearly some positive elements to what the private parking industry is proposing, it conveniently avoids some of the biggest issues around caps on penalty charges and debt recovery fees which badly need to be addressed to prevent drivers being taken advantage of."

BPA chief executive Andrew Pester said: "This is a crucial milestone as we work closely with government, consumer bodies and others to deliver fairer and more consistent parking standards for motorists."

IPC chief executive Will Hurley said: "The single code will benefit all compliant motorists and will present clear consequences for those who decide to break the rules."

Sky News has learnt the owner of Superdry's flagship store is weighing up a legal challenge to a rescue plan launched by the struggling fashion retailer.

M&G, the London-listed asset manager, has engaged lawyers from Hogan Lovells to scrutinise the restructuring plan.

The move by M&G, which owns the fashion retailer's 32,000 square foot Oxford Street store, will not necessarily result in a formal legal challenge - but sources say it's possible.

NatWest says its mortgage lending nearly halved at the start of the year as it retreated from parts of the market when competition among lenders stepped up.

New mortgage lending totalled £5.2bn in the first three months of 2024, the banking group has revealed, down from £9.9bn the previous year.

The group, which includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Coutts, also reported an operating pre-tax profit of £1.3bn for the first quarter, down 27% from £1.8bn the previous year.

An unexplained flow of British luxury cars into states neighbouring Russia continued into February, new data shows.

About £26m worth of British cars were exported to Azerbaijan, making the former Soviet country the 17th biggest destination for UK cars - bigger than long-established export markets such as Ireland, Portugal and Qatar.

Azerbaijan's ascent has coincided almost to the month with the imposition of sanctions on the export of cars to Russia.

Rishi Sunak has hailed the arrival of pay day with a reminder his government's additional National Insurance tax cut kicks in this month for the first time.

At last month's budget, the chancellor announced NI will be cut by a further 2p - so some workers will pay 8% of their earnings instead of the 12% if was before autumn.

The prime minister has repeated his claim this will be worth £900 for someone on the average UK salary.

While this additional cut - on top of the previous 2p cut in January - does equate to £900 for those on average full-time earnings of £35,000, there are two key issues with Mr Sunak's claim:

  • Once the effect of all income tax changes since 2021 are taken into account, the Institute for Fiscal Studies reports an average earner will benefit from a tax cut of £340 - far less than £900;
  • Moreover, anyone earning less than £26,000 or between £55,000-£131,000 will ultimately be worse off.

In short, this is because NI cuts are more than offset by other tax rises.

We explain below how this is the case...

Tax thresholds

This is partly down to tax thresholds - the amount you are allowed to earn before you start paying tax (and national insurance) and before you start paying the higher rate of tax - will remain frozen.

This means people end up paying more tax than they otherwise would, when their pay rises with inflation but the thresholds don't keep up.

This phenomenon is known as "fiscal drag" and it's often called a stealth tax because it's not as noticeable immediately in your pay packet.

That low threshold of £12,570 has been in place since April 2021.

The Office for Budget Responsibility says if it had increased with inflation it would be set at £15,220 for 2024/25.

If that were the case, workers could earn an extra £2,650 tax-free each year.

Less give, more take

Sky News analysis shows someone on £16,000 a year will pay £607 more in total - equivalent to more than three months of average household spending on food.

Their income level means national insurance savings are limited but they are paying 20% in income tax on an additional £2,650 of earnings.

In its analysis , the IFS states: "In aggregate the NICs cuts just serve to give back a portion of the money that is being taken away through other income tax and NICs changes - in particular, multi-year freezes to tax thresholds at a time of high inflation."

Overall, according to the institute, for every £1 given back to workers by the National Insurance cuts, £1.30 will have been taken away due to threshold changes between 2021 and 2024.

This rises to £1.90 in 2027.
