Great company of all time!

I’m not affiliated or paid by Expedia. I’m a real customer. I booked my 8 families plus myself from Expedia. I so love their 24hrs cancellation policy. Their customer support are always there to help. I don’t know why those comments were so negative. Other comments on here says do not support Israel. I mean this is not even relevant to the company. Omg! Ppl! Thank you so much Expedia Company. I will be buying more tickets from you. I will let my friends, acquaintances, and family know about your company. Only have problem is that Aviancca Airlines. The employees refused to board my 8 family. They so rude towards them despite of telling them that they have their vaccine or yellow fever card. The Aviancca Airline employees imposed rules that is non existent and refused to board my family. Hopefully, Expedia will be able to assist me with this problem. Other than that Thank you so much Expedia. You got my business as long as I am alive. I hope the app will get fix as it freezes often. Then when I closed the window or app to look up something it will disappear what I was working on. To Aviancca airlines please kindly retrain your employees not to be rude and listen to customers explanation. Try to speak little English or use google translate please. Smh! 5 Stars for Expedia Company.

Expedia STOLE my $$$!!! ( after posting review they gave a refund)

Update: Expedia reached out. I called them back and the lady I spoke to was very understanding. They issued me a refund for my rental car. Thank you Expedia for making this situation right! I booked a flight, hotel and rental car through Expedia. Prepaid for all of it. Upon getting to the airport at 12:30 am the Hertz rental car worker was extremely rude and told us we could not take our rental car that was paid in full because we did not have a credit card. (We don’t do debt) There is a policy that allows customers to use a debit card if they have two proofs of identification and a return flight booked. He didn’t even consider letting us use that option. He closed shop and went home (clearly didn’t want to be there). A very nice lady working at the Avis counter gave us a number for a taxi to the hotel (thank goodness one was open at this time of night). We then notified Expedia and they absolutely refused to give us a vehicle or refund! We still needed a rental to get to our grandfather’s funeral. They were no help. They said because we didn’t have a credit card, they couldn’t refund us. We paid for nothing!! And Hertz assured us they were not paid for the car. (They also assured us they would deal with their rude employee) This is unacceptable, especially since their policy states that a debit card could have been used. I will NEVER use Expedia again!!!!!

Developer Response ,

We’re sorry you’ve had a frustrating experience with our customer service team. We want to better understand what’s happened, but unfortunately, we can’t direct message in the app store. Can you reach out to our direct support channels at Expedia.com/service so we can look into this for you?

Website needs an update

II have used Expedia for years. Today I ran into an issue I hadn’t experienced before that raises a concern. I recently completed a trip that involved two separate payments - original payment for two rooms, second payment when I added an extra night to the hotel reservation. When we checked into hotel, Expedia agent had only added the extra night to ONE of the rooms and hotel clerk did not find the other reservation as it was still for the NEXT day check-in. So hotel charged me for the full stay for the second room. I called Expedia and got a refund for other second room, thankfully. Then I discovered the hotel overcharged me for the second room AND the extra night I added for both rooms at the end of our stay. I logged into Expedia to get copies of the two payments I had made for the rooms, and discovered Expedia only had the receipt for the last transaction - refund they had sent me. There was NO record of the original two payments for the trip itinerary. They ONLY keep the most recent transaction on an itinerary! This created a huge problem and I ended up spending almost an HOUR on chat with agents who had to manually create two receipts documenting the details for the two payments. What account websites delete original payment receipts if they issue you a partial refund??? Their system should keep records of ALL transactions for each trip/itinerary.
Hi, we’re so sorry you’ve had this frustrating experience. We would like to understand more and see if there’s anything we can do, but unfortunately, we can’t direct message on this platform. Can you reach out to our direct support channels at Expedia.com/service, so we can investigate for you?

How does Expedia work?

Is expedia reliable, ways to get a good deal on expedia, expedia is legit.

Expedia is an online travel agency (OTA) that might come up in your search when you’re searching for travel deals, including flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and activities. In 2023, Expedia launched a loyalty program called One Key, allowing travelers to earn and redeem rewards across its three most popular brands: Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo.

Let’s take a look at how Expedia works and whether it’ll save you money.

Video preview image

Because Expedia is a travel agency, its website or app's travel search features will return you results from multiple companies. For instance, if you search for a hotel in Miami, Expedia will display options from brands like Marriott , IHG , Hilton and Hyatt , and even boutique hotels.

Booking on Expedia is much faster than going to each company’s individual website, since it can be a good way to compare prices from multiple options at once.

How to find and book travel on Expedia

Like other OTAs, you’ll book travel using Expedia’s website or app.

If you’re on a computer, once you’re on the site’s homepage, you can enter your search details. Expedia allows you to book hotels, flights, rental cars, cruises, vacation packages and even things to do.

travel on expedia

Once you’ve completed your searching, you’ll be taken through the booking process. As an OTA, Expedia acts as the intermediary between you and the actual travel operators.

Many hotels and rental car agencies have restricted the ability to earn points or elite status credits when using an online travel agency for bookings. This does not generally apply to airlines, so you can usually still earn miles for flights booked through OTAs.

This means that if you were looking for a stay and chose to book a Marriott hotel through Expedia, Expedia would take your booking, head on over to Marriott to confirm availability, then process your reservation. It’ll then pass on those reservation details to the Marriott hotel.

You might be cautious of go-betweens or third-party booking sites, but Expedia is a legitimate, well-known online travel agency that’s been around for years. Microsoft originally launched the Expedia website in 1996. These days, Expedia is part of the larger Expedia Group, which includes brands such as Hotels.com , Orbitz, Hotwire, Travelocity, Vrbo and CarRentals.com.

All this is to say that Expedia is a reliable company. This isn’t some shady, fly-by-night operation.

However, you’ll always want to be careful when booking with a third party. It may be harder to change or cancel your reservation, and it might be wise to confirm any reservations directly with the travel operator. You’ll want to be sure that the details of your travel are correct and the reservation was actually made.

» Learn more: The pros and cons of booking through online travel agencies

Expedia can offer cheap travel deals across the spectrum, but it doesn’t just stop at your booking. There are a few other ways to help pump up the savings on your vacations.

1. Use a travel credit card to get rewards

If you aren’t already using a credit card to book your travel, you ought to be. In addition to earning bonus points on your purchases, some credit cards provide travel insurance free of charge as long as you use the card to purchase the trip.

When booking your trips, use a credit card that maximizes earnings on travel. This includes options such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , which earns 3 Chase Ultimate Rewards® points per dollar spent on all travel.

NerdWallet values Chase points at 2.2 cents each if you take advantage of transfer partners. That means you’ll be getting a 7.8% return when using this card to book travel, including bookings made on Expedia.

2. Sign up for One Key Rewards

If you book any travel with Expedia, it’s worth it to sign up for One Key, the site’s free member rewards program. As a member, you’ll receive 2% OneKeyCash for each $1 you spend on travel as well as elite status based on each travel segment booked. One Key is a unified program for Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, so the loyalty perks can be earned and redeemed across all three programs.

By signing up for One Key, you become a Blue member, which — according to Expedia — allows you to save at least 10% on more than 100,000 hotels globally. As you move up the tiers in status, your savings and benefits increase with higher discounts.

Triple-dip your reward earnings by stacking your credit card bonus points and One Key rewards by using a shopping portal when booking.

You can also opt to get an Expedia credit card if you really want to pledge your loyalty to the brand.

» Learn more: The One Key Rewards guide

3. Take advantage of Expedia’s best price guarantee

Expedia has its own best price guarantee when booking hotels, which will refund you the difference in cost if you find a cheaper price elsewhere. There are restrictions for this process — the cheaper option must be identical to Expedia’s offering, and you must be able to provide proof. If you’ve found a lower price, submitting a claim for a price match can be a good way to save money on your hotel bookings.

However, before you go ahead with your Expedia booking, you’ll want to check the prices for hotels when booking directly. This is because major hotel chains such as Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott often not only match a lower price you found elsewhere, but they’ll also provide up to a 20% to 25% discount on the entire stay or bonus points.

» Learn more: The pros and cons of Expedia

4. Skip rental car insurance if you already have coverage

As we mentioned above, Expedia offers the ability to rent cars. Along with the booking, you can also opt to include extras, such as additional drivers and rental car insurance.

But is Expedia car rental insurance a good deal? Not usually — rather than paying extra for this benefit, use a travel card that offers complimentary rental car insurance . This includes options such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express , among many other cards. Terms apply.

» Learn more: Best credit cards for online travel booking websites

Expedia has grown to become one of many large travel brands under the Expedia Group designation. While booking travel via an OTA can save you money, you’ll always want to double check your reservations with the travel provider and only book reservations that you are fairly confident that you’ll keep. Canceling can be a huge headache.

However, when stacked together with multiple ways to earn rewards, Expedia can be a great way to save some money on your travels.

Planning a vacation or trip is undoubtedly stressful. You're bombarded with seemingly endless options for flights, lodging, and things to do, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Many travel aggregators strive to present you with the best deals, but they all end up looking very similar to each other.

These similarities make it easy to know what to do and expect when you first visit a site. Typically, you enter your destinations, dates, and number of travelers. After you click search, you can further filter based on price range, airlines, and departure times for flights; amenities, hotel stars, and location for hotels; and type of car and rental car company for cars.

So what makes one site better than another?

It all depends on your priorities and preferences. Everyone travels and plans for that travel differently. Here are seven travel sites and the factors you should consider when choosing a site.

Booking.com

travel on expedia

Booking.com is a huge bank of information, offering more than 1 million properties in 117,000 destinations in 225 countries and territories. Wherever you'd like to go, you'll find it through this site. It offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars.  Clicking  restaurants will take you to OpenTable.

Highlights:

I found their desktop homepage to be cluttered and a lot to look at compared to the homepages of other sites, but their app experience was noticeably simpler, which makes sense as travelers increasingly turn mobile.

One feature on the homepage that stood out to me (shown above) was the "Are you traveling for work?" option. Clicking "Yes" will present popular business travel options like WiFi and breakfast.

Another feature was its flexible date suggestions if your chosen destination is a popular choice and accommodations are more than 50% reserved during your selected dates.

Best for:

  • Wide variety of options, including hostels, homestays, and bed and breakfasts
  • Easy access to your plans and searches by syncing your account across your devices
  • Getting the best deals with their Price Match offer
  • Destination travel guides and articles

Lacking or not the best for:

  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

Book a trip with Booking.com

travel on expedia

Expedia offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises, and things to do.

You can bundle flight, hotel, and car deals so you don't have to go through the headache of looking separately and trying to coordinate all the deals.

The "My Trips" section is helpful for managing your entire itinerary in one place, so you don't have to search through endless emails and accounts to figure out your vacation plan.

If you sign up as a member, you can earn Expedia+ points to use toward future trips. Use the mobile app to earn 2x Expedia+ points.

Like Booking.com, Expedia also offers suggestions for date shifts, date extensions, and route changes to get you to the cheapest deal.

  • Hotel, flight, and car bundles
  • Coordinating your whole vacation itinerary
  • Reward points system
  • Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Expedia

Tripadvisor.

travel on expedia

TripAdvisor offers booking for flights,  hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, and things to do.

It's well-known for its user-generated reviews, so as you're booking, you get the added benefit of reading reviews all in the same place. While I'm partial to Yelp for food recommendations and believe it to be better for US destinations, TripAdvisor is much more widely used in the international community.

TripAdvisor is the most experience-driven travel site. You are not just booking somewhere to live — you're signing up to experience and explore a destination.

  • Detailed filtering (e.g. style for hotels and distinctive features for vacation rentals)
  • Comparing deals across aggregators
  • Strong user-generated review community
  • Bundling hotel, flight, and car packages

CheapOair offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.  Clicking on its cruises  tab takes you to another site, Cheap Cruises.

The "Travel by Interest" section offers special deals for senior , military , student , and last minute travel . The military and student discounts emphasize keeping costs low, while the senior discount focuses on senior friendly destinations at an affordable price.

Whether you're coordinating a reunion, wedding, or corporate event, a Group Travel Request is a good option. You can work with an agent on your travel needs.

  • Specific travelers like senior citizens, military, students, and large groups
  • Higher than usual service fees (e.g. $32 per night per room for hotel bookings)

Book a trip with CheapOair

Hotwire offers booking for  flights, hotels, and rental cars.

Hotwire gives you all the filters and options you need but maintains the balance of not giving you too much. It keeps its sections simple, so you don't need to worry about something you may be missing out on.

Thanks to partnerships with other travel sites like Hotels.com and Expedia, Hotwire can offer extremely low prices. There is also a free 24-hour cancellation policy on most flights.

  • Focused searchers who do not want to be distracted or overwhelmed by too many options, things to do, and city guides. Destination guides and inspiration can be found on a separate blog page.
  • Travelers on a budget
  • Travelers with very specific preferences like hotel brand or car brand

Book a trip with Hotwire

Travelocity.

travel on expedia

Travelocity offers booking for  flights, hotels, vacation rentals, rental cars, cruises and things to do.  And no, you're not seeing double. Expedia owns Travelocity, which may explain why the two homepages look almost exactly the same.

From what we can tell, the most noticeable difference is Travelocity's Roaming Gnome, which represents the inspiration and wanderlust of traveling. The "Inspiration" section contains interesting articles like "Best Foodie Finds in Airports Around the World" and themes like "Luxury" or "Romantic." Expedia's travel blog, on the other hand, is relegated to an easy-to-miss link near the bottom of the page.

  • All the benefits of Expedia but with a more exploratory inspiration angle
  •  Single bookings. The site is best utilized for its bundle packaging.

Book a trip with Travelocity

travel on expedia

Priceline offers booking for  flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.

The " Express Deals " option rewards flexible travelers with up to 60% savings on hotels. The site will give you the location and star rating, but not the name of the hotel. You can still choose the bed type for many of the options.

Another way to save is the Name Your Own Price feature where you input the location, star rating, and price bid for a hotel.

For car rentals, you can also Name Your Own Price and bid for a car. If you don't have big preferences on the car brand, you'll be able to find a car for a price less than the search listings give you. For example, I was able to get an economy car with unlimited mileage for $30 a day, while the general search yielded cars that were all at least $37 a day.

The cruise section is clear and easy to navigate. The search option is similar to searching for flights, with more dropdown selections than other sites. This feature is ideal for travelers who know exactly what they want for their cruise experience, and are not merely shopping around.

  • Travelers with low hotel and car brand loyalty who want to find a great deal
  • Having a more focused cruise search process
  • Travel inspiration or destination guides
  • Low risk takers who like to know exactly what they're getting

How To Use Expedia To Find Great Deals on Flights, Hotels, Vacation Packages (and More)

How To Book a Flight on Expedia

Protect your flight, price comparisons, how to book a hotel on expedia, hotel insurance, member pricing, do package deals save you money, how to book a rental car on expedia, how to book a cruise on expedia, choose cabin type and dining preferences, how to book activities through expedia, expedia coupon codes, one key status, vip access hotels, expedia mobile app, expedia rewards credit cards, $50 visa gift card, group hotels, car rentals, final thoughts.

Expedia has been around for a while, and we’re sure most of you have used it at least once to search for a flight.

But do you really know all that Expedia has to offer? And are you really saving money when you book through Expedia?

Let’s dive deep into this site to answer all of your questions and show you everything Expedia can do for you!

Expedia Flights

While you can use Expedia to book lots of different things, flights are probably what comes to mind first. You can access the flight search by clicking Flights in the main search bar at the top of the page.

Booking a flight on Expedia is a simple process.

First, plug in your departure and arrival cities, dates of travel, and the number of passengers. You can also specify preferences such as ticket type (economy, premium economy, business class, first class), one-way, round-trip, or multi-city.

Expedia flight search

The search results page will include sorting and filtering options to the left of the screen.

If you have some flexibility and would like to see prices for different dates, click on Flexible dates right above the search results. This is a great tool to see if you can save some money by adjusting your travel dates (the lowest price options will be highlighted in green while the most expensive will be in red).

Expedia flight search flexible dates

The prices you see are per person for a round-trip flight, and they include taxes and fees (except for any baggage fees the airline charges ).

Once you have found the departure flight you like, click Select to continue with your purchase.

Next, you will be prompted to choose your return flight. Notice the flights that show a +$0 round-trip price — these are the options included in the price you were quoted .

Some flights could have a higher price, which will be added to the original price. Again, click on Select once you have chosen your flight.

Expedia flight price difference

You will then be prompted to bundle a hotel with your flight to save money — more on this in the Packages section below.

From here, you can confirm your flight details and add upgrades if you wish. Double-check your price on the right side of your screen. If there are any booking fees for your purchase, they will be listed here.

Expedia flight total

Click the blue Check out button to proceed. Then you can fill out your payment and traveler information to complete your purchase.

Hot Tip: Expedia offers free cancellation within 24 hours of booking your flight!

As you are completing your booking, you may be asked if you want to purchase travel insurance. Purchasing additional insurance is a personal decision, so be sure to do what you are comfortable with. However, make sure you are an informed consumer first.

There are many travel rewards credit cards with travel insurance so you may not need an extra policy. Cards including the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card come with perks such as trip cancellation insurance and lost luggage insurance.

So if you are purchasing your flight with the right credit card, you could already have all of the insurance you need .

Hot Tip: For a full run-down of the types of insurance offered by credit cards, check out our guide to credit card insurance . And for the times you think you might need to purchase additional coverage, be sure to refer to our guide to buying the best travel insurance .

Does booking your flight through Expedia save you money? Let’s take a look.

We searched for a round-trip flight from Columbus, Ohio to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and compared the cheapest option on Expedia to other OTAs and the airline’s website.

For this search, we actually got the exact same price on Expedia, the airline’s website, and on other websites like Kayak and Orbitz .

We did a second search, from Atlanta, Georgia to Paris to see where we could find the lowest price, and again, the same price was found on all of the sites.

In these situations, it’s best to decide what type of rewards you want to earn (Expedia Rewards vs. Orbitz Orbucks vs. airline miles for example), so you know the best place to book.

Bottom Line: Unfortunately there isn’t an exact science to finding the cheapest flight prices . While Expedia turns out to be a good option many times, it’s always best to take a few minutes to compare prices before you make a purchase.

Expedia Hotels

To start your hotel search on Expedia , just click on Stays in the main search bar. Input your destination, travel dates, and the number of travelers and rooms, then click Search.

Hotel search on Expedia

You’ll be able to filter your search results using the map or various features including amenities, price, or property type listed on the left side of the screen.

Expedia hotel search filter left bar

Each search result will show you the price per night .

The search results will also give you some other information at a glance, including the cancellation policy and any special amenities the hotel might offer (like free breakfast or a resort credit).

Expedia hotel search benefits

Click on a selection to see more information, including room types and prices. The price shown is always for a base-level room.  If you want a premium room or suite, your price will increase from what is initially shown.

Once you have selected your room, click on the blue Reserve button to continue. Then you can fill out your traveler and payment information.

Pay special attention when booking all-inclusive resorts or other types of properties that charge by the person. Be sure you are booking for the correct number of people!

Hot Tip: When searching for accommodations on Expedia, you’ll find vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts, condos, and villas in addition to hotels and resorts.

Just as when booking a flight, Expedia will try to sell you hotel booking protection, aka insurance. So, what does it include, and do you really need it ?

Expedia hotel insurance

The first thing you need to know is that this insurance will vary depending on the state you live in. Go here to access the policies for each state.

While there are definitely situations when purchasing extra insurance is a good idea, often you will have some degree of coverage from your credit card, so double-check your benefits before considering an additional purchase.

Many major credit cards offer travel insurance options, including varying degrees of travel accident insurance , trip cancellation insurance , and trip delay insurance .

You might notice that some properties offer special member pricing. All you need to do to access these prices is to create a free Expedia account .

Expedia member pricing on hotels

After a comparison of prices before and after creating an account and logging in, the member prices were indeed lower .

For the properties checked, the savings ranged from $18 to $58 per night . So, it’s definitely worth creating a free account if you plan to book a hotel through Expedia!

Bottom Line: If you are going to book a hotel through Expedia, be sure to create a free account. You can unlock lower members-only pricing!

Now let’s see if Expedia can save you money when booking a hotel. Here are our search results for a week-long stay in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic for 2 people:

Expedia matched (or almost matched) or beat the prices for all 3 of the hotel examples. Plus in each instance, Expedia offered a more flexible cancellation policy .

When you are booking a chain hotel such as  Hilton or Hyatt , it usually makes sense to book through the hotel’s website even if the price is the same. Hotels booked through Expedia won’t earn hotel points , and any elite status you have may not be recognized.

Bottom Line: When booking a hotel that has its own rewards program (like Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy) through Expedia you won’t be able to earn points or enjoy elite benefits. If those things are important to you, book directly through the hotel’s website.

Expedia Packages

If you’d like to book a combination of a flight, hotel, and/or rental car, check out the Packages section of Expedia.

Expedia Packages

You will see search results that look familiar — you can sort and filter your list just as you do when you search for a hotel or flight separately. The thing that is different is that the price listed is per person and includes all portions of your trip (hotel and flight, for example), plus taxes and fees.

Expedia Package

After you choose your hotel, you will be prompted to choose a flight.

When reviewing the second part of your package, you might notice that there are different prices. If the price is negative, your trip cost will go down; if it is positive, the cost will go up.

Expedia Bundle Save flights

Continue to select the rest of your flights and any other portions you bundled with it. Right before you finalize your payment, you will have the opportunity to upgrade your flight or add things like airport transfers and activities.

While not a guarantee, during our research, we’ve found that package deals can be where the biggest savings are.

Let’s take a look at some examples for a week-long hotel stay and round-trip flights for 2 people:

While you can see that you don’t always save money when booking a Package deal, there is the potential to save quite a bit — as much as $440 from these examples!!

Bottom Line: Expedia package deals combine a flight, hotel, and/or car rental in 1 package. While these deals don’t always save money, more often than not, you can save quite a bit.

Expedia Car Rentals

To book a rental car through Expedia, select the Cars tab in the top menu bar.

You’ll need to input your pick-up and drop-off locations and dates, and you can also specify your preferred rental company or input a coupon code by clicking the I have a discount code dropdown arrow.

Expedia Car Rental Search

Your search results list will default to Expedia’s recommended choices. To change the list to sort by price, just select Total Price in the sort options right above your search results.

To narrow your list, use the filtering options at the left side of your screen. You can filter your results by options including car type, price, and even payment options.

Before completing your booking, you’ll be able to double-check the details of the reservation and request extras such as a navigation system or child car seat.

Expedia car rental extras

Hot Tip: You might notice that there are 2 different prices listed: per week/day and total price. Pay attention to the total price — this will be the higher of the 2, which includes all days and taxes and fees.

Next, you will need to fill out your payment information and decide if you want to add insurance.

You can feel confident declining the insurance if you have a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , which comes with primary rental car insurance . This benefit covers any loss, theft, or damage to the rental car, as well as towing.

Expedia car rental insurance

There are many credit cards with rental car insurance, so check your wallet before purchasing an extra policy.

Keep in mind that these policies don’t apply to all car types (luxury sports cars are generally not included) and can vary by card, so be sure to double-check the specifics for your card .

In comparing prices between different online travel agencies, we have come to this conclusion: there is no single place where you will find the best prices every time .

Here is what we found when searching for a week-long economy car rental in Punta Cana:

In this example, Priceline offered the lowest price, but you had to pay for your reservation upfront . All of the other prices were for reservations that you could pay at the time of rental. So if flexibility is important to you, Expedia would be a good option here.

Expedia Cruises

The search feature for Expedia cruises is pretty simple. First, click on Cruises in the main menu bar. Input your destination, month of departure, and the number of travelers, then click Search.

Expedia cruises

If you choose a popular destination like the Caribbean, there will be a lot of choices, so you will want to use the filtering options to narrow your results by things like cruise length, departure port, or cruise line.

You will also have the option to sort your list of results by price (listed per person), departure date, and length of cruise.

Each cruise result will display basic information and the price per person .

Expedia cruise filtering and sorting options

Next, you’ll choose your cabin type . This can be a bit overwhelming if you have never cruised before! You will have options including interior cabin, ocean view, balcony, and suites. Then there are even more options in each of those categories.

You will also be able to see if there are any special offers that come with each room type — these offers are usually from the cruise line and not exclusive to Expedia.

Hot Tip: Read the description of your room very carefully — many categories of rooms sound similar. An ocean view room usually just has a small porthole ( often with obstructed views ). Large ships can have balcony rooms overlooking the atriums in the center — so if you want a balcony that faces the ocean, be sure to book an ocean view balcony, not just a balcony!

When pricing out several cruises, we found that most of the time, the price was the same on Expedia as it was on the cruise’s website and other online travel agencies.

While the base prices tend to be the same across most websites, you’ll often find that the extra perks and benefits like ship credit or free specialty dining can vary by website, so it’s always best to check a few before booking.

If you collect Expedia Rewards points, it might make sense to book through Expedia. Otherwise, you might want to book directly with the cruise line or see if any other sites offer any extras.

Either way, make sure you are using a credit card that earns bonus points on cruise travel when booking direct or a card that earns points on general travel when booking through Expedia to earn lots of points for your purchase.

Hot Tip:  Booked your cruise but not sure how to prepare? Check out this ultimate cruise packing guide with tons of tips and advice.

Expedia Things To Do

You can use Expedia to book activities at your destination , too. Just go to the Things to Do tab in the main menu, enter your destination and dates of travel, and then click Search.

Expedia things to do

You will likely have lots of results, which you can filter by criteria including activity type and budget.

Each result will give you some basic information about the activity, including the price per person and the name of the tour company. Remember, it’s always a good idea to check what the prices would be if you booked direct.

Click on any result to get more information, check availability for your dates, and complete the booking.

Hot Tip: You can earn or redeem Expedia Rewards points when booking activities through Expedia.

When pricing out a few activities, we found that the prices were all over the map:

  • Some activities were the same price on Expedia versus the tour company’s website
  • An activity was available on Expedia but not the tour operator’s site
  • An activity was more expensive on Expedia, but Expedia offered the ability to book for 1 person; the tour operator’s site was less expensive but had a minimum of 2 people

So, again, there is never a right answer here. Expedia is often a good choice for booking things to do during your vacation, but it never hurts to do a quick check on the tour operator’s site .

Expedia Deals

If you’ve got some flexibility, check out Expedia’s featured deals  under the Deals tab under the More travel dropdown menu.

Expedia Deals

The deals are broken down by location and are usually only available for specific dates, so it’s good to have some flexibility if you’re looking to save the most money.

When you click on each deal, you should be taken to a search results list with your chosen deal at the top, but we found that wasn’t always the case. Sometimes we could see the deal, but sometimes it was nowhere to be found.

You can find Expedia coupon codes in a few different places.

First, you can try the Expedia coupons page . Coupons are not always available, but it’s good to check before making a purchase.

You can also check some of the popular coupon sites. Here are some links to check out the next time you are using Expedia:

  • Expedia coupons on Groupon
  • Expedia coupons on Rakuten
  • Expedia coupons on RetailMeNot

One Key Rewards

One Key is the rewards program shared by Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo. It allows you to earn points called OneKeyCash on eligible hotels, vacation rentals, flights, car rentals, and more across the 3 brands.

Members receive 2% in OneKeyCash for every dollar spent on eligible hotels, vacation rentals, activities, packages, car rentals, and cruises. Unfortunately, the earning rate for flights is poor — just 0.2% in OneKeyCash for every dollar spent on eligible flights.

Members can also receive discounts of 10% or more on hotels and up to 30% when booking a hotel and flight together.

Just as with most frequent flyer or hotel rewards programs, Expedia’s One Key offers different levels of status. Status levels are determined based on how many trip elements you collect. You’ll get 1 trip element for each hotel or vacation rental night, each flight, each car rental day, each cruise night, and each activity ticket.

VIP Access Hotels are a group of over 3,000 properties that offer higher standards and consistently get rave reviews and ratings.

Expedia VIP Access hotels

All members earn 2% OneKeyCash when booking VIP Access properties and Silver, Gold, and Platinum members get extra perks.

Summer Travel: Here's how to save on airfare, according to Expedia

The sun is shining and the beaches are calling.

And since searches for summer trips for flights and lodging are up, the countdown to locking in on those summer travel plans with some savings is approaching, according to Expedia.com.

So here's how:

Expedia , the full-service travel brand company, reveals how to save on summer airfare with tips from its Summer Travel Outlook , complete with data compiled from searches of peak travel times from 2023.

"The sweet spot for booking your summer trip is right around the corner, but there's still a bit of time to figure out your vacation plans and lock in those flights at a great rate," says Melanie Fish, head of Expedia Group Brands public relations.

More: These 15 places are the best to visit in New Jersey, according to Travel and Leisure

According to Expedia's Summer Travel Outlook cheat sheet, travelers should follow these steps:

  • Book summer flights 21 to 60 days out. Travelers booking during this window saved around 15% for domestic and international travel last year timeframe.
  • For international flights depart on a Monday. For domestic flights depart on a Tuesday. Travelers saved around 15% compared to those that departed on Thursday and Friday.
  • Choose to fly during mid-to-late August as the summer season slows down. It’s less busy and can yield savings of up to $265 on roundtrip tickets compared to the last week of June when average fares peak.
  • Expedia says travelers can save by bundling their flight, hotel and car rental for a discounted rate.

"The cheat sheet is easy this year — book one to two months out and save around 15%, whether you're taking the family to the beach in Florida or summering in Paris," said Fish.

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

travel on expedia

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.

Where to go

Our favorite destinations: These 12 destinations are at the top of our wish list for where to go this year, without crowds. In 2023, we explored an Alaskan bear paradise, Brooklyn’s famous pizzerias and a hidden gem in Italy, among other highlights .

Travel like a local: Residents share their favorite places in our top city guides: New Orleans , Rome , Tokyo and Mexico City .

National parks: This comprehensive guide has details on all 63 U.S. national parks. For a deep dive into five of the most well-known, you can listen to the Field Trip podcast . Then explore tips from locals for visiting Yosemite , Glacier and Everglades .

Tales from the road: Dolly Parton has opened a new resort at her theme park complex in Tennessee, while “Fixer Upper” stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have a new hotel in Waco . Road-trippers may be just as excited to see the cartoon beaver at Buc-ee’s , and bargain-hunters should consider a stop at the Unclaimed Baggage store in Scottsboro, Ala.

Travel | orange deputies arrest ‘potential serial killer’ in slayings of two women, things to do, travel | travel troubleshooter: expedia said it would refund my tickets four years ago. help.

Author

DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: I need help getting a refund from Expedia. I booked two round-trip Air Transat tickets from Toronto to Paris through Expedia back in 2020. I had to cancel the flights, and under the refund rules during the pandemic, Expedia said I could get my money back. Expedia said it would process the refund in a matter of weeks.

Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter ...

I waited a few months, but the refund never showed up on my credit card. I contacted Expedia in early 2022, and they told me to contact Air Transat for my refund. I did, and an Air Transat representative said the airline had already sent my refund to Expedia.

I’ve contacted both Expedia and Air Transat on numerous occasions since then, and I’ve also asked my credit card company for help. It says that there’s no record of a refund from Expedia or Air Transat.I would love to get my refund. Can you help me?

— Keith Dawe, Toronto

ANSWER: Expedia should have refunded your money four years ago. I believe this is a new record for the longest airline refund case. (Congratulations, Expedia!)

Air Transat is a relatively small charter airline, so that might explain the initial delay. But at some point, Expedia should have taken ownership of this problem and helped you get a refund. Instead, it looks as if you bounced between Expedia, Air Transat and your credit card company for years. Literally, years. You must be exhausted.

What happened? It looks as if Air Transat refunded part of your purchase with a check, which appears to only cover taxes and fees. This left an outstanding balance of about $1,002. Air Transat claims it sent the money to Expedia, but Expedia said it never received the money.

Here’s the thing: When you buy an airline ticket through an online travel agency, it is responsible for the refund. It doesn’t matter if the airline refunds it or not. So, if Expedia says that you’re entitled to a refund, and it promises to process a refund in a few weeks, it’s on Expedia.

You were way too patient with your airline and online agency. You should have received the promised refund promptly, and if you didn’t, you should have filed a credit card dispute to recover your funds.

I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the Expedia executives on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org . A brief but firm email to one of them might have motivated Expedia to find your missing money.

I contacted Expedia on your behalf. In response, the company apologized and admitted that there was “an error with the refund.””The refund has been processed,” a representative said. Expedia also added $200 worth of points to your loyalty account as an apology for the delay.

We’ll stand in the shadow of giant elephants and giraffes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, explore the $1 billion new old Pier Sixty-Six resort in Fort Lauderdale and swim with manatees in Crystal River.

TravelAds Sponsored Listings have a place in every hotel advertising plan. Why? Every successful hotel marketing strategy needs to be able to adapt to stay competitive. As the travel industry continues to be in flux, Expedia Group Media Solutions continues to update and improve TravelAds for hotels to connect with their ideal customers and fill rooms.

Why you should create a marketing plan that includes TravelAds

Strategically embracing sponsored listings like TravelAds is a cost-effective and powerful way to amplify your visibility. With TravelAds features like real-time reports and precise traveler targeting, you can improve your brand awareness and connect with motivated travelers who are ready to book.

How TravelAds features help you reach your hotel advertising goals

Let’s get into different TravelAds features and how you can use them to make your hotel advertising more effective, drive online bookings, and more.

Stay competitive with bid enhancers .

To increase the likelihood of your ideal traveler seeing your ads, we offer bid enhancers that let you bid based on length of stay, check-in window, and more. Bid enhancers are a specialized feature that help your hotel ads get noticed by travelers. TravelAds bid enhancers can consistently elevate your property’s visibility with travelers and drive demand, especially in the competitive hotel industry.

Using bid enhancers is one of the hotel marketing strategies you can use to reach your campaign goals, like the Tuscan hotel group Blinkup, who incorporated them along with different Media Solutions products to drive a nearly 600% increase in room nights and nearly 2 million impressions for their hotel ads.

Eliminate the guesswork with automated bidding .

Leveraging our bidding tools is a key part of staying competitive and optimizing your advertising campaigns. We know that the bidding process can be time-consuming and complicated. That’s why we created our automated bidding feature in TravelAds, which does the heavy lifting and bids based on your market goals and daily budget to help your hotel advertisements get noticed.

Showcase what makes your property unique with customizable content .

TravelAds is the ideal hotel PPC, or pay-per-click, advertising option, which allows you to highlight exactly what you want, when you want, with custom copy and photos. Draw attention to new property additions, showcase your story, or feature timely events with TravelAds.

Reach the right audience at the right time with precise targeting capabilities .

One powerful TravelAds feature is targeting, and there are a variety of different targeting options available to advertisers and marketers. These include:

  • Device-based targeting, which allows you to tailor your ads based on whether your target audiences are using a phone, tablet, or a desktop computer. By understanding the context of how travelers engage with ads, you can optimize your marketing campaigns for better reach and relevance. Plus, you can tailor your hotel ads based on the device, like making your ads more mobile friendly.
  • Custom audience targeting, where our travel advertising experts can help you layer multiple profiles to create highly defined and unique traveler profiles that you can act on to better engage your target audiences.
  • Trip details targeting, which allows you to target potential customers based on everything from trip duration, number of travelers, and more.

Keep in mind that you can use our first-party data to help you target travelers and develop defined audience segments.

Capture the attention of travelers with scheduled ads .

With the scheduled ads feature, you can adjust which version of your ad is displayed across Expedia Group brands to appeal to travelers from specific regions or during specific periods. The messaging, imagery, and timing of a series of sponsored listings can be varied and dynamic. By strategically timing your hotel ads, you can capture demand during peak booking periods or target specific traveler segments.

Gain payment flexibility with pre-fund and post-bill .

These features give you added control over your payments. You can choose to fund your TravelAds campaign in advance with pre-fund or pay afterward with post-bill . Plus, you can update your funding method at any time.

  •   Pre-fund : Allocate funds for your campaign with direct billing or a credit card. Your hotel advertisements will stop running once your balance reaches zero, but you can add more funds at any time.
  • Post-bill : Your campaign will start running immediately, and you’ll be billed at the end of every month. There’s no upfront commitment or pre-approval required. When you reach your credit limit, you can add funds with pre-funding or request a credit limit increase.

Manage your campaigns with real-time reporting .

Your TravelAds reporting dashboard provides instant insights into how your campaign is performing, and these multiple data points help you analyze and optimize your campaigns effectively. Key metrics you can view include:

  • Ad impressions: The number of times your hotel ad was displayed to travel shoppers.
  • Click-through rate (CTR): The percentage of users who clicked on your hotel ad after seeing it.
  • Clicked room nights: The number of room nights booked by travelers who interacted with your hotel ad.
  • Clicked revenue: The revenue generated from hotel bookings resulting from ad clicks.

Real-time reporting gives you the adaptability you need to remain competitive. If certain aspects of your hotel marketing campaign aren’t performing as expected, you can adjust immediately.

Get competitive insights with the bid strength meter .

Competitive insights help you understand how you compare against market leaders in key indicators like CPC, ROAS, or daily spend to inform your strategy. Bid strength measures the relative strength of your bid against competing base bids. While it doesn’t guarantee a specific ad rank, this metric can be thought of as showing how likely you are to capture a Top 3 auction spot on a scale from one to 10. Understanding your bid strength empowers you to strategically navigate the competitive landscape and achieve your hotel advertising goals.

Make informed decisions with opportunities and insights .

Our opportunities and insights feature lets you refine your hotel advertising strategy and drive incremental room nights by applying personalized recommendations in the TravelAds portal. With this feature, you can easily pinpoint optimization opportunities based in data intelligence to help you make informed decisions to improve your campaign performance.

Build a TravelAds campaign

Remember, effective hotel advertising isn’t only about visibility; it’s about connecting with travelers, understanding their needs, and delivering a compelling message that inspires action. By strategically utilizing TravelAds features, you can create impactful campaigns that drive online bookings and elevate your property’s profile.
