Visit Olden – Popular Attractions

The area around Olden includes the nearby towns of Loen and Stryn. Olden has a population of about 500 and is a lovely spot nestled on the Innvikfjord. Few cruise lines choose to visit this port and only one ship visits at a time. Olden Adventure caters to the cruise ship industry. Here are their most popular adventures:

  • Loen Skyflit
  • Loen Lake & Kjenndal Glacier
  • Briksdal Glacier Shuttle Bus & Troll Cars
  • Open Top Glacier Sightseeing around Lake Olden

Loen Skylift

Loen Skylift

The Loen Skylift opened in 2017 and immediately became the highlight of a visit to Olden. The lift starts on the fjord just past the town of Loen and only about 10 minutes from the Olden pier. The gondola takes 5 minutes to travel up 3,200 feet. From the viewing platforms and the restaurant you get fabulous views of the fjord, Loen Lake, Olden Lake, plus distant views of the Kjenndal and Briksdal Glaciers. Paragliders will enjoy the dedicated launch area at the top and climbers can access a via ferrata.

Visit Olden – Kjenndal Glacier

Take a 40 minute trip from Olden to Kjenndal Glacier in the Kjenndal Valley. To get to Kjenndal Glacier, you will pass through the town of Loen and see the emerald green waters of Loen Lake (Lovatnet) en route. The viewpoint for Kjenndal Glacier is a short hike from the parking lot where the road ends. The glacier no longer reaches the valley floor so you won’t be able to get close to the ice. On the way back, stop at Kjenndalstova Restaurant on Loen Lake. You can also book a tour from Olden Adventure that includes a cruise on Loen Lake as well as the Kjenndal Glacier visit.

At the end of the lake, about 3 minutes from the Kjenndalstova Restaurant, stop at the memorial to the Ramnefjelett Mountain Landslides. The mountain collapsed in 1905 and again in 1936, taking the lives of 135 people.

Visit Olden – Village Sights

  • Gamlekyrkja – the Old Church, believed to be a 1700s church built over an earlier stave church.
  • Singerheimen – William Henry Singer chose to invest his family’s steel company inheritance into a life in the arts in Olden.
  • Red Church – built in the 1930s just south of town.

Visit Olden – Boyabreen Glacier

Travel just over an hour from Olden to Fjaerland to see the Norwegian Glacier Museum . On the way to the Norwegian Glacier Museum pass through the town of Skei and stop at the viewpoint at Mount Utvik too. Enjoy views of the Boyabreen Glacier. Have lunch at the Thon Partner Hotel Jølster on your return trip to Olden or stay over night.

Briksdal Glacier, Jostedalsbreen National Park, Visit Olden

Briksdalbre Mountain Lodge

Travel a half hour from Olden to the Briksdalbre Mountain Lodge , passing Floen Lake, Lake Olden and the Melkevoll Glacier along the way. At the Briksdalbre Mountain Lodge, the horse drawn carriages have been replaced with a “ Troll Car ” that drives passengers to the Briksdal Glacier. See the Volefossen and Kleivafossen waterfalls. Expect to get wet from the waterfall spray whether you walk or ride a Troll Car. The Briksdal Glacier no longer reaches the valley floor, so you won’t be able to reach the ice.

Rakssetra, Loen Skylift

Rakssetra, Loen Skylift

The old farm site of Rakssetra has become a popular Instragram spot. Drive 6 minutes west of Loen and up the Oppheimsvegen Street to the large pay parking lot. Then hike up about 1 km on a fairly steep trail. At the top you will find about 15 private holiday cabins that you can wander among to enjoy the fabulous view of the fjord and lakes below.

Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre

Jostedalsbreen National Park Center  is about 40 minutes from Olden. The route to Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre passes through Loen, Stryn, the Stryn River and Lake Strynsvatn along the way. Continue past the center, up the hairpin turns, to the viewpoint at the Hotel Videseter too. This is a great route to take to reach Geiranger.

Other Sights When You Visit Olden

  • Sagastad Viking Center – see the largest Viking ship in Norway. The Myklebust ship is a full scale replica based on remains found in a burial mound in 1874. The ship is 100 feet long. Sagastad is a 1 hour drive from Olden.
  • Nedrebergtunet – farming museum near Stryn and 23 km (14 mi) from Olden. Stay overnight in a restored farm house.
  • Nordfjord Folk Museum – 18th and 19th century Norway in Sandane, 54 kim (33 mi) from Olden. It includes 44 houses and the 60 foot Holvikejekta, a traditional freight ship.

Get to Olden

You can get to Olden from Bergen by car in about 5 hours. The way to get to Olden is along Norway’s route E39 and 60, but some visitors arrive on major cruise lines during the brief Norwegian summer. On cruise ship days, the tourists who visit Olden far out number the local population. Olden can also be reached by driving about 3 hours south from Alesund, mainly on route E39 as well.

Olden Weather

The long days of the Norwegian summer from May to September are the best time to visit this area. Olden never gets very warm, because it’s so far north.  July and August are the warmest months with average highs of 64 F (18 C) and average lows of 50 F (10 C).

In the winter months from December – February, average highs are 39 F (4 C) and average lows are just below freezing. Rainfall is lower from April to July.  Many attractions are closed in the winter.

Visit Olden – Background

Olden is a small village of about 500 people. The village is on the Oldeelva River in the Oldedalen Valley at the end of the Nordfjord. Olden is the gateway to the Briksdal Glacier (Briksdalsbreen) and the village has become a popular cruise ship destination. The Briksdalsbreen is an arm of the the largest glacier in Europe, the Jostedal Glacier. Olden also has easy access to several other arms of this glacier, including Kjenndal and the Boya. The glaciers create an abundance of emerald lakes and waterfalls in the Olden area.

Pleasant bus trip from Olden towards a glacier for about 90 minutes. Did not see the glacier - it was summer and the weather was cloudy, but any enjoyable trip around the Olden area and reasonable value. Opportunities for photographs by a waterfall and around the lake. If you want to see the glacier there are other, longer trips.

The cruise up the fjord to Olden was amazing, the scenery magnificent. Photos cannot do it justice. We had booked a trip to a smaller glacier, could not going to Briksdal because of my mobility problems. Must say that this tour was lovely, great tour guide and again magnificent views. There was a small walk up to near the glacier which I managed, it was a rough dirt track, what I expected, so wore appropriate foot wear. Worth the walk. the coach driver was brilliant and stopped for photos quite often. This was really a lovely day with plenty of stunning scenery.

We booked this independently in advance of arriving in Olden via P&O cruises. To be fair, this is advertised as a shuttle bus... but for the price, I thought there would be a little bit of commentary. There is not. The hike up to the glacier is gorgeous, and the little village nearby is cute. We were told that there's a local bus that runs this same course though, so may be worth looking into as the price per person (we were 5 people) was pretty insane for a shuttle bus with no guidance.

They outfit you with crampons, ice axe, poles, and a harness which they use to tie everyone in a line together. After a brief chair lift ride up to the base, the hike started off in dense fog up to Tystigbreen Glacier, Our guide was a local young man who was incredibly experienced with glacier hiking and knowledgable about the area. As I have never done any winter hiking, this was a perfect introduction. It was a little strenuous at times as we ascending quickly up the glacier. We took a break at the top, ate snacks and then proceeding back down. An unforgettable experience!

We booked the tour to the Briksdal Glacier onboard our P & O ship. The day we arrived in Olden was warm and sunny. The tour guide and coach driver were brilliant and the scenery to and from the glacier was stunning. We stopped for photo opportunities on both the outward and return journey. The walk from the coach park to the glacier was good with a pretty waterfall to photograph up close. The glacier itself was receding but still very beautiful and the area at the end of the path had plenty of rocks to sit on and admire the views. We stopped for tea and cakes which were included in the tour price before boarding the coach. A very good coach trip.

This red bus has glacier express on the side of it. This is very misleading. It doesn’t actually go to a glacier. It is a 12 kilometre pretty ride along the river and Olden lake to the next lake where there is a view of the end of an arm of a glacier which is still a few miles away. The bus driver mentioned we may see this on the way there but failed to point it out on the way back. There was a view of it from the bus but it is very small and we had to just guess that maybe that was it and managed a photo more by luck than anything else. Had to look it up on internet when we got home. This is an expensive trip for what it is, about £25. The scenery makes up for it though. This is a very lovely part of Norway. If you want to get to Briksdal Glacier, you need the little blue bus which was there at the port. That takes you there, gives you time there and runs as a shuttle to bring you back. I think this is about £45 though. Norway is eye watering expensive! Another thing that a lot of people enjoyed was the sky lift. Again there is a bus going from the port. Everyone said the views were amazing and at the top there is a warm restaurant where you can sit and look at the views and enjoy a hot drink.

May 24, 2022 Russia-Ukraine news

By Travis Caldwell , Seán Federico-O'Murchú, Jack Guy, Sana Noor Haq, Hafsa Khalil and Adrienne Vogt , CNN

Regional military chief: Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from contested town of Svitlodarsk

From CNN's Kostan Nechyporenko

Pavlo Kyrylenko, the head of the Donetsk regional military administration, said Tuesday that Russian forces had taken the contested town of Svitlodarsk in the eastern Donbas region and that Ukrainian forces had withdrawn.

"About 10,000 civilians remain in occupied Svitlodarsk," Kyrylenko said. "No more than 30% of the population left the city. Today, May 24, the Russian army entered Svitlodarsk in the Donetsk region. Russian flags have already been hoisted there."

According to Kyrylenko, Svitlodarsk had been surrounded on three sides, and that the city had not been under intense shelling, so much of the civilian population remained.

"This is not a retreat [of the Armed Forces of Ukraine], but a regrouping," he said. "This is the right and logical decision in this situation to save the lives of [the military] and regroup."

Pro-Russian Telegram channels showed images of the Russian flag being hoisted over the city administration building in Svitlodarsk.

Kyrylenko also described the situation as "very difficult" in Lyman, a city further north in Donetsk region.

"It's now under constant fire," he said. "The enemy entered the territory of the Lyman community a long time ago. Their main goal is to take the centre of the community of Lyman. The estuary is now partially under control, they enter, then they are kicked out, heavy artillery drives in, and tanks enter the outskirts of the city to conduct shelling and occupy the entire center and the entire Lyman community. The situation there is now one of the tensest along the entire front line, along with Avdiivka."

Mariupol death toll at 22,000, says mayor's adviser

From CNN’s Saskya Vandoorne and Melissa Bell in Kyiv

“Mariupol is now a city of ghosts,” an adviser to the mayor of the ruined Ukrainian port city said Tuesday.

Speaking to CNN’s Melissa Bell, Petro Andriushchenko — who has fled to Ukrainian held territory — said that Mariupol town hall officials believe that at least 22,000 residents of the city were killed during three months of war — a figure that cannot be independently supported, with the free press now unable to get access to the city and those still inside too scared to speak openly.

The figure of 22,000 is based, Andriushchenko said, on the many contacts he and other town hall officials continue to have with officials trapped inside. But he believes the actual figure could be much higher.

Andriushchenko said that the process of reburying the dead has been complicated by Russian official insistence that reclaimed bodies be brought to a morgue and that a person claiming a body must agree to record a video in which the applicant says the deceased was killed by the Ukrainian military.

Andriushchenko said that, based on the information gathered from his network of sources, Mariupol tonight is a city thrown back to the Middle Ages.

“It is absolutely dark inside the city. The only lights are from Russian troops and Russian patrols,” he said. “Everywhere it’s the smell of death and the smell of fire.”

The mayor's adviser said his contacts paint a picture of a city in the grips of a humanitarian catastrophe with very little contact to the outside world. Mobile phone connections are only just beginning to be re-established.

He said residents are unable to move freely, with special passes needed for any movement within the city and a filtration system keeping them from fleeing altogether.

Mariupol has been at the center of a ferocious, months-long battle between Ukrainian government forces and Russian soldiers and pro-Russian fighters.

It officially fell to Russian forces Friday when the last group of the Azovstal fighters at the steel plant they had been holding out in for several weeks surrendered.

Hungarian prime minister announces "state of emergency" due to war in Ukraine

From CNN's Boglarka Kosztolanyi and Niamh Kennedy in London

Hungary will enter a "state of emergency" due to the war in Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a video posted on his official Facebook account on Tuesday.

"Hungary must stay out of this war and protect families’ financial security. To do this, we need room for maneuver and the ability to act immediately," Orban said.

The state of emergency is set to go into effect starting at midnight local time on Wednesday, according to Orban, who did not give details regarding the extent of the emergency powers. The prime minister said he would share more details regarding his decision on Wednesday.

This would not be the first time Hungary has activated a state of emergency. A bill was passed during the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 that allowed Orban to rule by decree.

Hungary also recently voiced its opposition to a proposal from the European Union to ban imports of Russian oil, saying it will not support such a measure.

Russia would still pose threat to peace in Europe even after possible ceasefire, Polish foreign minister says

From CNN’s Inke Kappeler and Arnaud Siad

Russia would remain a threat for peace in Europe even after a ceasefire in Ukraine, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said on Tuesday.

“That Russia changes immediately after a ceasefire has been agreed is daydreaming. It would remain a danger for peace in Europe,” Rau said during a joint press conference with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock.

Rau said he feared a Russian invasion into Poland, as well as “the danger of an armed invasion of the countries in the NATO eastern flank.”

Poland and Germany must strive for Russia "to suffer a strategic defeat and its occupation forces to leave Ukraine within the borders recognized by international law," Rau also said.

Baerbock also made clear that the Donetsk region belonged to Ukraine, saying, “Ukraine is a sovereign state within its borders and this is true for now, this is true since 2014 and this is true for the future.”

French foreign minister pushes for another round of Russia sanctions

From CNN's Niamh Kennedy

France's Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna listens as Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock speaks during a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday.

The European Union needs to adopt its sixth package of sanctions against Russia soon, according to France's Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna.

Speaking during a joint press conference in Berlin with her German counterpart, Colonna stressed the need "to strengthen our support to Ukraine."

Despite opposition from countries like Hungary, Colonna said she is "optimistic" that the package will be approved and commended the "remarkable" unity shown by the EU in holding Russia accountable.

"We have to continue because it is this unity that is our strength," Colonna emphasized.

Russia's invasion contributing to rise in severe food insecurity in Latin America and Caribbean, officials say

From CNN's Jorge Engels

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is contributing to a sharp rise in the number of people suffering from severe food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean, the United Nations World Food Programme warned in a  statement  Tuesday, heaping more pressure on a region that is already suffering from the fallout of Covid-19 and the effects of climate change.

Between December 2021 and March 2022, the WFP said that, according to recent surveys conducted by the organization, the number of people suffering due to severe food insecurity “shot up” by more than 500,000. Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

“Millions of people could be pushed into poverty and hunger if the conflict in Ukraine continues. The region is already dealing with Covid-19, rising costs and climate extremes,” said Lola Castro, WFP’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean. “We could return to food insecurity peaks seen during the height of the pandemic, as job and income losses, food inflation and other driving factors batter the most vulnerable people.”

The WFP said the war in Ukraine has led to a surge in commodity and energy prices, which is leading to a rise in food inflation that threatens the region since several countries are highly dependent on cereal imports. It added that Caribbean nations that import substantial amounts of food will be particularly affected due to “soaring” sea freight costs.

Before the war, wheat supplies from Russia and Ukraine accounted for almost 30% of global trade, and Ukraine is the world's fourth-largest exporter of corn and the fifth-largest exporter of wheat,  according to the US State Department . The WFP, which helps combat global food insecurity, buys about half of its wheat from Ukraine each year and has warned of dire consequences if Ukrainian ports are not opened up.

Since the war began, Russia has been blocking Ukraine from exporting goods from its ports, fueling fears of a global food crisis.

"Russia has blocked almost all ports and all, so to speak, maritime opportunities to export food — our grain, barley, sunflower and more," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday.

The US and Ukraine have also accused Russia of stealing Ukrainian grain supplies, which Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says is “fake news,” according to Russian state news agencies. CNN has viewed satellite images that show two Russian ships docking and loading up with what is believed to be stolen Ukrainian grain. CNN also tracked a Russian ship carrying Ukrainian grain from Crimea to Syria after being turned away from ports in Egypt and Lebanon.

CNN’s Alex Marquardt and Tim Lister contributed reporting to this post.

It's just past 7 p.m. in Kyiv. Here's what you need to know now.

From CNN Staff

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addresses the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

A top Russian security official said Russian forces are not "chasing deadlines" in Ukraine, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for continuing economic and political pressure on Moscow.

If you're just reading in now, here are some of the latest developments of the war in Ukraine:

  • Ukraine shows drone footage: The Ukrainian military for the first time released footage of special forces using small, foreign-made drones to target Russian positions. The portable, so-called kamikaze drones carry warheads and detonate on impact.
  • NATO leader says there is support for new members: NATO member countries  broadly support  welcoming Finland and Sweden into the alliance, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in Davos.
  • A brewing food crisis: The head of the UN World Food Programme called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to reopen ports in Ukraine to exports to prevent children around the world from starving. The president of the European Commission earlier accused Putin of  "weaponizing" food supplies . Russia's  theft of Ukrainian  grain appears to be ramping up, according to new satellite photos.
  • Russia's undefined timeline: Nikolai Patrushev, the head of Russia's Security Council, said in published remarks that Russian forces aren't "chasing deadlines" in Ukraine, suggesting a possibly open-ended timeline for Moscow's invasion.
  • Zelensky addresses World Economic Forum:  The Ukrainian President  told an audience in Davos  that Kyiv is prepared for a prisoner exchange with Russia and also urged world leaders to "keep the political pressure" on Russia in "any way they can."
  • Russian oil embargo could come soon: Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said an embargo on Russian oil could be in place "in a matter of weeks."
  • Ukrainian prosecutor general charges Russians: The prosecutor's office said it had charged members of the Russian military and a Russian mercenary group as suspects in the murder of Olha Sukhenko, the mayor of a Ukrainian village, and two family members.

Russian diplomat who resigned in protest of war is "very courageous," Ukrainian UN ambassador says

From CNN’s Claire Calzonetti and Emmet Lyons

Boris Bondarev

Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s top diplomat to the United Nations, said that the protest resignation of a Russian foreign service officer is a “very courageous act,” but he remains disappointed that so few Russian diplomats have spoken out.

“On the one hand, I can say that it was a very courageous act,” Kyslytsya told CNN’s Chief International Anchor Christiane Amanpour Tuesday. “On the other hand, I would say that I’m disappointed.”

“We’re very disappointed in the course of three months and given the numbers of Russian foreign service, there’s only one known case of a person who has dignity and moral standards to speak out against the evil,” Kyslytsya said.

Boris Bondarev, a 20-year veteran of Russia's diplomatic service, announced his resignation Monday in protest against his country's war on Ukraine by posting a statement on a LinkedIn account. In the post, he criticized the Russian foreign ministry for participating in an "aggressive war" — language that is proscribed in Russia under wartime censorship laws.

Kyslytsya said that Russian diplomats who continue to be complicit in Russia’s war against Ukraine would ultimately face accountability for their actions.

“I have to face Russian diplomats every week, at least once or twice, in the Security Council. It’s so difficult because you can’t believe it, that people can drivel out those lies so bluntly. But you know, as I said in one of the first meetings, lying and lying and lying is basically ensuring that they have secured the best place, if I may, in hell for them,” he said.

“I think that everything they say in the Security Council may and will be used in a tribunal that will be established. There is no end to this story until all of them, including the Russian diplomats, are called to account,” he said.

Kyslytsya drew a parallel between Russian diplomats today and the ultimate fate of Joachim von Ribbentrop, the foreign minister of Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1945. Von Ribbentrop was found guilty and sentenced to death at the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal following World War II.

“When Ribbentrop was denying his knowledge of concentration camps, by the end of the day, he was convicted. We all know what happened to him,” the ambassador said.

Ukrainian special forces release video of military using foreign-made kamikaze drones

From CNN's Vasco Cotovio

The Ukrainian military has for the first time released footage of special forces using foreign-made kamikaze drones targeting Russian positions. According to the Ukrainian military, the drone was equipped with a powerful explosive that caused damage to a Russian tank after it flew into it.

"The combat use of kamikaze UAVs is a constant practice for SOF of Ukraine in the war with Russian invaders," the Ukranian military said. "This is a good example of how the help of foreign partners together with the training and professionalism of our soldiers give positive results at the front."

The US sent 100 Switchblade drones  to the Ukrainian military in April. The small, portable, so-called kamikaze drones carry warheads and detonate on impact. The smallest model can hit a target up to six miles away, according to a company that produces the drones.

Glacier Sightseeing - Open Top Bus Ride

The open top buses are right outside the disembarkation point of the ship. The girls are extremely helpful and a ride costs you £20. This takes you on about 1 hr round trip up through amazing beautiful scenery. The stopping point is a place where you can see the glacier over a beautiful clear lake. The bus then turns around and drops you either in the small town or takes you back to the ship . Well worth it for £20. Get on the top deck if you can.

Take a tour to the Kjenndalen Glacier by the way of a boat trip along Lovatnet Lake you will not be disappointed the scenery is just amazing. Stop for local waffles and coffee along the way. No problem if you have a mobility problem the boat is easy to get into if you can manage a few steps.

Nice glacier but the real story here is getting there!!!! We decided to not take the tour offered by the ship and instead qeued up and purchased tickets on the Glacier Express. These can be bought at the souvenir shop adjacent to the ships' pier. Caution: Be one of the first off the ship and scoot over to the shop ASAP as the line becomes quite long very quickly. Wait time for tickets can be as much as 90 minutes or more and then you wait again to board the small minibuses (3 of them) that take you to Briksdal where you disembark. From here you can take a troll (small tractor with 6 seats in rear ) if they have not already been fully booked which they were on the day we were there. That meant an uphill, strenuous hike of 3-4 kilometers including some steep, slippery stairwells. BUT, I HAVE TO SAY, THE SCENERY WAS SPECTACULAR!!! The view from the lake below the glacier is postcard perfect. And lastly, the walk back down was significantly easier!!!! PS: The cost this way was about half what the cruise ship was charging, a significant savings!

We landed here on a cruise and decided not to book the ship excursion up the glacier due to the expense. Instead we formed a long queue into the glacier excursion building next to the ship on the dock to buy tickets which were considerably cheaper. Once served you are allocated a bus number and time and having waited an hour to get to the front of the queue, we then waited another hour to board the bus - no problem as there are a few shops to look around and there is plenty of time. The bus drops you off at a nice little cafe half way up the mountain from the glacier and then you can choose to walk or take troll cars which drop you a few hundred metres from the glacier itself. We decided to walk as the walk is relatively easy albeit uphill and the views and scenery are pretty good. I've rated this average because on arrival at the glacier, you can't really get near to it. This is for safety reasons but it is disappointing that you can't get near enough to experience it and get those killer photos that we all need. It's an expensive excursion however you do it and it just didn't quite tick all the boxes for us. However, if you want to see a real live glacier in person, this is a good opportunity to do just that.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. As we had to wait for a wheelchair accessible bus, we were chatting to the staff about the local area and its history. The staff had good English and were knowledgeable of the area. The buses were clean and comfortable. We had a live audio tour, again, well presented and personal. If you are on cruise, wait till later in the day- our bus was nearly empty- the others, earlier were crammed full! You can pay in cash or by card, in Euros, dollars, NK. 200 NK €25 £20 $25 Would thoroughly recommend.

Went on a trip from a cruise liner berthed at Olden. Very pricey. Coach took us most of the way up the mountain - great views - and then a strange little "Troll" car took us further up to within about half a mile of the glacier. There was then quite a testing walk over uneven ground to the foot of the glacier. There is a small lake where the glacier ends and amazing views.

Regional military chief: Ukrainian forces have withdrawn from contested town of Svitlodarsk

From CNN's Kostan Nechyporenko

Russian forces have taken the contested town of Svitlodarsk in the eastern Donbas region and Ukrainian forces have withdrawn, according to Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of the Donetsk regional military administration.

"About 10,000 civilians remain in occupied Svitlodarsk," Kyrylenko said Tuesday. "No more than 30% of the population left the city. Today, May 24, the Russian army entered Svitlodarsk in the Donetsk region. Russian flags have already been hoisted there."

According to Kyrylenko, Svitlodarsk had been surrounded on three sides, and the city had not been under intense shelling, so much of the civilian population remained.

"The situation there is now one of the tensest along the entire front line," he said.

200 bodies found in ruins of Mariupol high-rise, Ukrainian official says

From CNN's Maria Kostenko

A Ukrainian official from the Russian-controlled port city of Mariupol claimed 200 bodies had been discovered in the rubble of a ruined high-rise building, another gruesome find in the city that has been devastated by months of Russian bombardment.

Petro Andriushenko, adviser to Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boichenko, said in a statement on Telegram Tuesday that around 200 bodies were found during the dismantling of the rubble of a high-rise building near a suburban gas station. The bodies were found in a basement underneath the wrecked building in an advanced state of decomposition, he added.

"Due to the refusal of locals to collect and pack up the bodies of the dead, the Russian Ministry of Emergencies left the site," Andriushchenko said. "The bodies of the dead remained in place. The stench can be smelled almost throughout the quarter due to partially dismantled debris."

CNN was not able to immediately verify Andriushchenko's claim. Andriushchenko is not in Mariupol but has served as a clearinghouse for information from residents remaining in the city.

Residential buildings heavily damaged during the Russian attack on the southern port city of Mariupol, Ukraine, on May 11.

Ukrainian officials say more than 20,000 residents of the city died during three months of war — a figure that cannot be independently supported — and many of the dead have been hastily buried in courtyards.

Andriushchenko said the process of reburying the dead has been complicated by Russian officials' insistence that reclaimed bodies be brought to a morgue and that a person claiming a body must agree to record a video in which the applicant says the deceased was killed by the Ukrainian military.

"The city has turned into a continuous cemetery," Andriushchenko said.

Society "may not survive" Putin's war, says billionaire George Soros

From CNN's Jeanne Sahadi

Russia's invasion of Ukraine may have marked the start of "a third world war," and Russian President Vladimir Putin must be defeated "as soon as possible" if the world wants to preserve civilization.

That was the stark message that Hungarian-born billionaire and philanthropist George Soros delivered on Tuesday to attendees at the 2022 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"Even when the fighting stops, as it eventually must, the situation will never revert" to where it was before, warned the 91-year-old   Soros. "Other issues that concern all of humanity — fighting pandemics and climate change, avoiding nuclear war, maintaining global institutions — have had to take a back seat to that struggle. That's why I say civilization may not survive."

The former hedge fund manager, who is chair of Soros Fund Management LLC and founder of the Open Society Foundations, is famous for using his wealth to help foster open societies and create inclusive democracies with governments that are held accountable.

But after the events of September 11, he noted, the tide began to turn against open societies. As a result, "repressive regimes are now in the ascendance and open societies are under siege," he said Tuesday. "Today, China and Russia present the greatest threat to open society."
