A four season room off of the kitchen overlooking an incredible view of the lake, contains the dining area and a knotty pine ceiling with whitewash finish. Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour | Get Inspired and Support Local Nonprofits!

smith mountain lake house tour

The all-volunteer Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, now in its 32nd year of operation, has raised $5 million for area charities! It’s great fun to explore some of the most beautiful homes on the lake and experience their lovely lake and mountain views. Visitors get ideas about building, remodeling, materials, contractors, architects, products and their sources. Here’s a look at the eight homes showcased on the Charity Home Tour this year on October 6, 7 and 8. All homes are accessible by boat or by car.

The HUDLER home in Huddleston provides a spectacular view of the lake with Smith Mountain in the background. It feels like being in a treehouse because trees frame the lake view from the windows. The Hudlers had the lot’s former house torn down and, two years later, the current New England-style contemporary with modern finishes was completed.

Also in Huddleston, the SHEETS home exhibits rustic, “shabby-chic” style. Examples include: many unique furniture pieces and artwork, grandmother’s antique ice box, a display of old metal toys, a Black Dog Salvage-refurbished church door and a bar made from a boat. Enjoy the decorating of very creative homeowners!

The MCGEE home, in Kennedy Shores, one of SML’s newest developments, has a wide view of the Bull Run area of the lake. This white Hardy plank home with black trim is Craftsman-style with French country interior décor. The open-concept living/dining area has patios that beckon outdoor entertaining. The kitchen’s hidden pantry is a separate room with a coffee bar.

The MCAVOY home offers wide-water views of the Roanoke River toward Smith Mountain from all upstairs rooms. The interior is Tuscan style with a large painting over the fireplace. Off the kitchen is a screened porch with a fireplace, and there’s a covered balcony off the living room. Antique-looking wooden mantles cap the fireplaces. Outdoors a unique fire pit and sitting area were created behind huge rocks that were already on the property.

The DUNCAN home on Tranquility Road is a peaceful place indeed, tucked into a quiet cove of the Blackwater River. This French Country-style home, built in 2000, was remodeled extensively in 2020. The interior is eclectic, with white-washed oak floors, vaulted wooden ceiling in the entryway, a large sunroom with remote-control skylights, and Czechoslovakian family china displayed in the dining room. ✦

SML Charity Home Tour event prepares for 30th annual event

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A Smith Mountain Lake tradition returns this weekend for its 30th year and it’s all for a good cause.

This weekend, The Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour offers people the opportunity to go inside some of the beautiful homes on Smith Mountain Lake.

Folks guide themselves to each home by car or by boat. This year, there are eight homes available to be toured, while the donations from the 140 sponsors involved in the event will be split up between eight different area charities.

For the organizers of the event, being able to give back as what it’s all about.

“Just keeping some of the charities running, that’s why this event is so important,” explains event Executive Director Sandra Morse.

$116,000 has already been pledged for donation and around 800 tickets have been sold.

The tours start October 8.

Ticket information and a list of charities benefiting is available here.

One home office serves as a guest bedroom with a handicap-accessible bathroom. The home also has an elevator, which is regularly checked by a lift servicing company. The lower level is as chic as the upstairs, with two guest bedrooms, entertainment area with bar, builtin aquarium, colored mood lights and a secret door. 19 Atlantic Avenue, Moneta.

LIVE_SMLtour8

LIVE_SMLtour9

8. On the Blackwater, the Borum home, loved for twenty years, no longer met the family’s needs, so they opted to demolish and rebuild. Gone was the four-bedroom, two-bath home with seven-foot ceilings, now replaced by a contemporary farmhouse designed to maximize the lake view while highlighting the remarkable Zelkova tree at the entryway. Enter through the kitchen, and view the open eating area and living room. The master suite and two guest suites are also on this level. The oversized covered deck with seating and adjoining dining porch are inviting. Two more bedrooms and a bath are on the lower level. Just outside, is a delightful stilt cottage, which houses Nancy’s studio. 3576 Kemp Ford Road, Union Hall.

Directions by Water

Charity Home Tour ticket holders who are visiting homes by boat this year will have an easy time of it.  With only two not-so-distant exceptions, the lovely homes that will be open for viewing are clustered in the channel junction area where the Roanoke River, Craddock Creek, Witcher Creek, and Blackwater Rivers meet.

Each dock will be marked with a tall orange flag, and nearly all will have a Passenger Drop Off option. (Captains will stay with their vessels and wait in the cove for their passengers to Tour the home.)  Bring along a lake map, hydration, snacks, sunscreen, and a fully-charged cell phone.  Make sure properly-sized life vests for everyone are readily accessible, preferably out on deck.  Wearing them while underway is highly recommended by all the lake’s law enforcement and water safety groups.  Always exercise caution when entering and exiting your vessel.

The homes are listed below in a sequential boating order, but your route will vary by starting point and which homes you elect to visit by water.  Note that the homes retain their “Numbers” from the map and by-land directions.  Travel times between docks were taken running about 25-30 MPH in open areas, on calm water.  Yours will vary with traffic, wind, and your comfortable vessel speed.   PLEASE REMEMBER:  MOST DOCKS HAVE ONLY 2 DOCKING SPACES, SO PACK YOUR PATIENCE AND ALLOW PLENTY OF EXTRA TIME IF TOURING BY WATER.

Traveling south (down river) from Hales Ford Bridge:

#3 McAvoy Home 268 Vermont Avenue, Moneta (GPS 37° 05.043 N 79° 37.569 W)

The McAvoy Home is in Park Place, at the down-river end of the S-Curve, about a 20-minute run south from Hales Ford Bridge.  After passing marker R17, bend a bit to starboard and point your bow due west toward the community water tower.  You will spot the orange flag below a copper-roofed dock cupola.

#4 Thomas Home 140 Windmere Trail, Moneta (GPS 37° 03.811 N 79° 37.324 W)

Head down the Roanoke River, pointing toward the southern (right) end of the Smith Mountain ridge. Pass the boardwalks of Boardwalk to starboard and enter the SECOND cove on the right (one cove beyond the Boardwalk cove with red-roofed gazebo).  The home is deep in the cove, on the right.  Gray home with white trim.  7-10 mins.

#2 Sheets Home 2943 Trading Post Road, Huddleston (GPS 37° 03.962 N 79° 33.419 W)

Exit the cove and turn downriver, passing between R11 to the right (just below Rabbit Island) and several shoal markers to your left.  Then angle left, pointing toward the cell towers on the dam end of Smith Mountain’s ridgeline.  Your destination is Craddock Creek, just beyond Mitchell’s Marina.  Be aware of the shoal between Beach and Middle Islands.  You will want to pass to the right of R6 and R4, and then wide around C1 into Craddock Creek.  Pass C2A and on toward Mitchell’s, coming off plane to pass left of the marina’s no-wake markers.  The home is deep in the cove on the right, with a large letter “S” on the wall facing the lake.  18-20 mins.

#1 Hudler Home 2231 Capewood Drive, Huddleston (GPS 37° 03.362 N 79° 32.672 W)

Exit the cove and head towards the dam, keeping C2A and C2 comfortably to port.  Once past R2. angle left about 45 degrees toward the far shore.  The light-colored home sits up high on that shore, well left of W-1, and just right of a large A-frame home.  15-17 mins.

#8 Greco Home 176 Three Point Isle Drive, Penhook (GPS 37° 01.697 N 79° 35.920 W)

The dock at this house is closed, but the home is open so please plan to drive by land as its SPECTACULAR!

#7 McGee Home 79 Pennsylvania Avenue, Union Hall (GPS 37° 01.710 N 79° 38.402 W)

Exit cove and steer toward the Lakestone condo cluster on the far shore, passing well left of Christmas Tree Island.  Enter Bull Run at BU1, then angle toward far shore.  The McGee dock is several to the left of the Kennedy Shores boat launch ramp/trailer parking area.  10 mins.

#5 Duncan Home 120 Tranquility Road, Moneta (GPS 37° 02.865 N 79° 37.144 W)

Exit cove and follow left shore past the Lakestone condos.  Parallel the up-river shore of Christmas Tree Island and enter the large cove directly ahead, just above B8.  House is in the far-left corner of the cove; look for solar panel array on the dock house roof.  10 mins.

#6 Derr Home 74 Sail Away Lane, Moneta (GPS 37° 03.435° N 79° 39.046° W)

Exit the cove and circle right to pass the “What About Bob House” and B10.  Continue past B10A outside of Chimney Island; then angle right toward a high brown house with impressive firepit midway down the yard.  10 mins.

Return trip to Hales Ford Bridge is typically about 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic.

Gas and restrooms can be found at Webster Marine (just north of Hales Ford Bridge, Bedford side), Parrot Cove Boat Rentals (just north of Hales Ford Bridge, Franklin Side), and Mitchell’s Point Marina (just beyond C2A).  Bayside Marina (across the Roanoke Channel from R26, at the far end of Becky’s Creek Cove,) offers 24/7 pay-at-the-pump gas.  Sea Tow will be standing by to assist members free of charge and non-members for a fee—call (540) 719-5555.  For medical emergencies or law enforcement needs, dial 911 or (540) 586-7827 and clearly indicate your location on the lake.
