Dew Tour 2020 at Copper Mountain

Pro skiers and snowboarders from around the world are gathering in Copper Mountain, Colo., yet again for the Dew Tour competition. And the stakes are high with it being an Olympic qualifiers event.

What exactly is Dew Tour? It’s more than 200 athletes from 17 different countries competing in ski and snowboard superpipe, slopestyle, and adaptive snowboard slalom. It’s the best of the best of ski and snowboard competitions.

We’ll have coverage streaming in live from the event over the next few days, so be sure to check back here for more news, updates, and winning results.

Why Dew Tour Is a Big Deal

The U.S. Snowboard and Freeski teams have had a packed competition season. Halfpipe, big air, and slopestyle teams competed at the Big Air FIS World Cup (Dec. 2-4) and the U.S. Grand Prix FIS World Cup (Dec. 8-10) earlier this month.

Plus, many winter athletes are riding full-steam toward the 2022 Beijing Olympics Winter Games.

Maggie Voisin skiing slopestyle competition riding a rail on a park feature at Copper Mountai

This weekend, skiers and snowboarders will compete in slopestyle and pipe competitions at the Winter Dew Tour, one of the last Olympic qualifying events on U.S. turf. (Dew Tour was also an Olympic qualifier for freeskiing and snowboarding back in 2014 and 2018.)

Needless to say, Dew Tour is where the action is. And if you aren’t going in person, our live coverage is the place to be.

Many athletes riding at Dew Tour are vying for points to make their way up the FIS rankings, which factors into their Olympic qualifications. Who will podium at Dew Tour? Which skiers and snowboarders will rise to the top ranks? Stay tuned to find out.

Halfpipe Coverage

The halfpipe competition has athletes competing inside Copper Mountain’s 22-foot superpipe. In the finals, each athlete will get three runs (scored on a 100-point system) to show their stuff. The best one of their three runs determines their final rank.

Men’s Ski

Here are the 10 male freeskiers who made it onto the start list for finals:

  • David Wise, USA
  • Noah Bowman, Canada
  • Nico Porteous, New Zealand
  • Brendan MacKay, Canada
  • Lyman Currier, USA
  • Aaron Blunk, USA
  • Alex Ferreira, USA
  • Simon D’Artois, Canada
  • Hunter Hess, USA
  • Birk Irving, USA

Final winners

  • Gold : Alex Ferreira, USA
  • Silver : Aaron Blunk, USA
  • Bronze : Brendan MacKay, Canada

U.S. athletes Birk Irving and David Wise followed up the podium pack in places fourth and fifth.

Men’s Snowboard

Here are the 10 male snowboarders who made it onto the start list for finals:

  • Ayumu Hirano, Japan
  • Ruka Hirano, Japan
  • Yuto Totsuka, Japan
  • Shaun White, USA
  • Andre Hoeflich, Germany
  • Chase Josey, USA
  • Taylor Gold, USA
  • Jan Scherrer, Switzerland
  • Valentino Guseli, Australia
  • Joey Okesson, USA

As expected, several athletes from Japan and the U.S. have stacked the ranked in the top 10. Though the big surprise was U.S. snowboarder Danny Davis, who finished 12th, just short of making it to finals.

  • Gold : Yuto Totsuka, Japan
  • Silver : Taylor Gold, USA
  • Bronze : Ruko Hirano, Japan

Women’s Ski

  • Cassie Sharpe, Canada
  • Brita Sigourney, USA
  • Kexin Zhang, China
  • Gold: Eileen Gu, China
  • Silver: Kelly Sildaru, Estonia
  • Bronze: Hanna Faulhaber, USA

Women’s Snowboard

Here are the eight female riders who made it onto the start list for finals:

  • Maddie Maestro, USA
  • Chloe Kim, USA
  • Xuetong Cai, China
  • Queralt Castellet, Spain
  • Mitsuki Ono, Japan
  • Ruki Tomita, Japan
  • Sena Tomita, Japan
  • Haruna Matsumoto, Japan

Similar to men’s halfpipe, Japan absolutely dominated the women’s halfpipe board. Though, U.S. pros Maddie Maestro and Chloe Kim have still got to be the favorites headed to finals.

  • Gold : Chloe Kim, USA
  • Silver : Queralt Castellet, Spain
  • Bronze : Cai Xuetong, China

Slopestyle Coverage

mens ski nick goepper USA

Here’s how slopestyle works: Competitors will get three runs to show their skills. They are scored on a point system out of 100. Here are the 10 male freeskiers who made it onto the start list for finals:

  • Colby Stevenson, USA
  • Oliwer Magnusson, Sweden
  • Fabian Boesch, Switzerland
  • Nick Goepper, USA
  • Etienne Gagnon, Canada
  • Evan McEachran, Canada
  • Alex Hall, USA
  • Mark Hendrickson, Canada
  • Mac Forehand, USA
  • Finn Bilous, New Zealand
  • Gold: Colby Stevenson, USA
  • Silver: Alex Hall, USA
  • Bronze:  Nick Goepper, USA

Men’s ski slopestyle finals saw a ton of talent, but U.S. athletes ended up dominating the podium. Moreso, both first- and second-place finishers are from Park City, Utah: 23-year-old Alex Hall and 24-year-old Colby Stevenson.

Same as the men’s competition format, female slopestyle skiers will compete in three runs, where they are scored on a 100-point scale and then ranked by their best run.

This time at Dew Tour, qualifiers were postponed, meaning the whole field of 16 freeskiers will compete in the three-run final. Skiers to watch in the women’s slopestyle include Eileen Gu — who could potentially podium twice in one day in slopestyle and halfpipe — and Sarah Hoefflin, Giulia Tanno, Johanne Killi, Mathilde Gremaud, along with frontrunner and fan-favorite Tess Ledeux. Plus, U.S. skier and Dew Tour rookie Bella Bacon.

  • Gold:   Tess Ledeux, France
  • Silver: Eileen Gu, China
  • Bronze : Johanne Killi, Norway

Speed was a huge factor with the women’s snowboard slopestyle competition Saturday morning, with big names like U.S. riders Jamie Anderson, Julia Marino, and Courtney Rummel (finishing in 4th place) missing the podium spots.

  • Gold: Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, New Zealand
  • Silver : Enni Rukajarvi, Finland
  • Bronze : Kokomo Murase, Japan

Men’s snowboard slopestyle finals saw an absolute epic performance from all the top athletes, but U.S. athlete and reigning Dew Tour 2020 champion Red Gerard ended up pulling the first place spot with his final run. A third U.S. pro snowboarder Sean FitzSimons finished in fourth place behind snowboard star Mark McMorris.

  • Gold : Red Gerard, USA
  • Silver : Chris Corning, USA
  • Bronze : Mark McMorris, Canada

Adaptive Snowboard Slalom

The only adaptive event at Dew Tour, 16 male and 10 female athletes will compete on the adaptive snowboard slalom course. They’ll be timed on two runs, and the fastest of two runs counts. The women will compete first, then the men.

Women’s final winners

  • Gold: Kiana Clay, USA
  • Silver: Peggy Martin, USA
  • Bronze: Annika Hutsler, USA

Men’s final winners

  • Gold:  Matti Suur-Hamari, Finland
  • Silver: Owen Pick, Great Britain
  • Bronze:  John Leslie, Canada

Winter Dew Tour

Mountain Dew and Coalition 375 have announced its annual Winter Dew Tour snowboard and ski competition and festival will return to Copper Mountain, Colorado, from February 24—26, 2023.

The Winter Dew Tour will include the world’s best male and female skiers and snowboarders competing in individual superpipe and streetstyle events and a calendar of fan activities. The entire schedule of events will be free and open to the public.

“I couldn’t be happier to have the Dew Tour return to Copper Mountain this winter,” said Olympic Gold Medalist Snowboarder Red Gerard , also won back-to-back Dew Tour competitions in 2020 and 2021. “Being that it’s not an Olympic qualifying year, the competitions will have some fun new course evolutions, so I’m hyped about the whole weekend.”

Copper Mountain is home to Woodward Copper and the Stifel U.S. Ski Team Speed and is the official training center for U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes leading up to the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

How a Colorado trooper saved a Dew Tour competitor off a gridlocked highway, helping him onto the podium

News News | Mar 16, 2024

Cody Jones

Responding to vehicular accidents during the winter season is a major part of the job while working for Colorado State Patrol. What troopers don’t expect, however, is to see a professional skier hiking his way through a crash scene while trying to get to Copper Mountain Resort for a competition, but that is exactly what happened on Saturday, March 9.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Devin Sparks arrived that morning to the scene of a head-on collision between Copper and Leadville on Colorado Highway 91 and was in the process of documenting the crash and assisting the victims when he noticed a man with ski gear hiking his way north to Copper.

The skier was not an inexperienced, confused or lost. The man happened to be U.S. professional skier and three-time Olympic medalist Nick Goepper.

Goepper was stuck in traffic following the crash and was getting worried that he may not arrive to Copper in time in order to compete in the 2024 Dew Tour men’s superpipe final at 10:30 a.m.

“I immediately started my plan B and knew I needed to leave my car or I wasn’t going to make it to the mountain,” Goepper said of his thought process. “I realized I wasn’t going to make it with the traffic, so you gotta do what you gotta do.”

Nick Goepper/Courtesy photo

Not wanting to risk how long it may take Sparks and the other Colorado State Patrol troopers to safely reopen the road, Goepper decided to ditch his truck on the shoulder, unload his ski gear and begin trekking down Highway 91 toward Copper in his black Vans and his Dew Tour start bib.

When Goepper eventually reached Sparks at the scene of the crash, the Summit County-based trooper told him to stop, causing Goepper to grow scared that he was going to get in trouble for disturbing the scene of the crash.

“He was walking through the crash scene on the inside shoulder, and as he walked past us I kind of asked him to stop,” Sparks said. “I told him to wait by my car and that I would give him a ride into Copper, knowing where he was going because of the bib he was wearing.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nick Goepper (@nickgoepper)

Goepper enthusiastically accepted Sparks’ offer for a ride down to Copper and promptly loaded himself into the patrol car with his Volkl halfpipe competition skis partially hanging out the driver’s side window.

Separated by the glass partition in the middle of the squad car, Sparks — who is originally from Indiana — soon realized he had a fellow Hoosier who also happens to be an accomplished skier in the back of his squad car.

“I recognized him as I got closer to him and talked to him because I am from Indiana,” Sparks said. “It just happened to be a pretty big coincidence.”

Nick Goepper/Courtesy photo

Goepper, who turned 30 on Thursday, grew up in Lawrenceburg, Indiana before going on to become a professional. He spent the first part of his professional career as a slopestyle skier, winning bronze in the event at the 2014 Olympics and silver at the 2018 and 2022 Olympics.

After three Olympic medals, Goepper decided to retire at the end of the 2022-23 season, citing burnout, but it was not long before Goepper was back on his skis chasing after more podium finishes.

At the end of 2023, Goepper made his debut in freestyle halfpipe, dropping into Copper’s superpipe and competing at the U.S. Grand Prix. In his first time competing in the event in years, Goepper placed fourth overall behind experienced halfpipe veterans Alex Ferreira of Aspen, Hunter Hess of Bend, Oregon, and Birk Irving of Winter Park.

Goepper continued to hone his craft in the superpipe throughout the season, earning third in Mammoth back in February, which was his highest finish in the halfpipe until arriving to Copper via squad car for the Dew Tour.

Despite all of the stress and unplanned events earlier in the morning, Goepper — clad in his signature competition blue jeans and bright red flames helmet — spun his way to second-place overall at the 2024 Dew Tour with a top run score of 91.

“Sometimes you have to get the job done no matter what,” Goepper said of his performance. “I was extremely thankful for the cops.”

With a second-place trophy in hand, Goepper was not only astonished to end his season with the highest finish of his rookie season in the halfpipe, but also extremely grateful for Sparks and his efforts to get him to the competition. As a gesture of his gratitude, Goepper went on to sign and send Sparks his starting bib alongside a handwritten note.

“It was that day that he helped make my dreams come true, and I wanted him to know how much it meant to me,” Goepper said.

“It was very shocking to receive it honestly because it was his highest place,” Sparks said of getting the bib. “It was a great honor to receive that for helping him out on the side of the road and doing my job.”

Although he is accustomed to having the occasional unusual encounter while out on patrol, the interaction with Goepper is one that Sparks will remember for a long time to come.

“It was just a great encounter,” Sparks said. “Very respectful guy — very nice, very kind, really down to earth. We had a great interaction, and to meet a pro skier from Indiana after growing up there was really a great coincidence on the side of the roadway on a work day.”

Rescheduled Aerosmith Denver tour date to happen this fall

By Jesse Sarles

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 4:58 PM MDT / CBS Colorado

Fans of the band Aerosmith in Colorado have been patiently waiting for the classic rockers to bring their tour to Denver. This week they learned they'll only have to wait about 7 more months.

Aerosmith

Last fall's concert that was supposed to happen at Ball Arena was postponed with no reschedule date announced at the time.

This week singer Steven Tyler, guitarist Joe Perry and their rocking bandmates announced that the Ball Arena concert in will finally happen on Nov. 18.

The ticket purchases of fans who previously bought tickets to the Denver tour stop will be honored at the new concert.

This tour is called the Peace Out tour, and The Black Crowes will be the opening act for all of the tour dates. Tickets can be purchased on aerosmith.com .

In the past 5 years Aerosmith has been forced to call of or postpone some of its concerts because Tyler has had issues with damaged vocal cords and also at one point had to enter a substance abuse treatment program .

Jesse Sarles manages the content and operations for CBSColorado.com. He writes articles about Colorado news and sports in and around the Denver area.
