Prince of Whales Adventures – Half-Day Whale Watching

Marine mammal experts guide this half-day excursion and share information about both humpback and orca whales throughout the five-hour catamaran cruise. Sample a wide variety of locally made beer during this three-hour van tour. Each outing includes stops at three different breweries for facility tours and a flight of the company's beers. You'll also enjoy an introduction to the beer-making process as well as a free beer glass and a journal to record your favorite brews. Patrons rave about the beers sampled during the tour and compliment the guides on their expertise. Tickets cost about CA$85 (around $61) for those who are drinking and CA$60 (about $43) for those who are not. Prices include transportation between breweries and all beer sampled. All participants must be at least 19 years old and bring a photo ID. Tours run Wednesday at 6 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at noon and 4 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. Breweries visited depend on the day and time of the tour. The company runs multiple other craft beer tours in different areas of the city as well as private tours.

Taste Vancouver Food Tours – Gastown Food Tour

Eat your way through the historic Gastown area of Vancouver on this 2 1/2-hour walking tour that's limited to just 16 participants. Indulge in a variety of foods, including pulled pork, beer-battered fish, chocolate from Canada's oldest chocolate shop and more sweet and savory delights. Tourgoers say the food is delicious and that their guides are friendly and knowledgeable. Tours run at 2 p.m. daily from June through September; excursions leave Wednesday through Sunday only October through May. Tickets start at CA$89 (about $64) per person, regardless of age. All food, plus two alcoholic beverages are included. The company also offers food tours of Little Italy and Vancouver's North Shore.

Wild Whales Vancouver

Wild Whales Vancouver takes passengers off the coast into English Bay to search for humpback and killer whales as well as other local wildlife. Trips can last anywhere from three to six hours, depending on if the boat has to travel farther from Vancouver to spot wildlife. The company says 90% of their trips see whales, but if your outing has no animal sightings your next trip is free. Travelers report seeing lots of whales and describe guides as insightful and friendly. Departure times vary depending on the season and vessel type selected; tours depart from April through October only. Tickets start at CA$150 (about $108) for participants 13 and older, CA$100 (about $72) for ages 3 to 12 and CA$30 (about $22) for ages 2 and younger.

Two Vancouver cocktail spots named to North America's 50 Best Bars list

Looking for sophisticated sips with a pedigree in Vancouver? Two well-known cocktail spots in the city have landed on the 2024 list of North America's 50 Best Bars , joining the ranks of some fine company from around the continent.

Now in its third year, North America’s 50 Best Bars includes voting for bars from Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean. The ranking reflects the best bar experiences based on the votes of the 270 Academy members - these are "anonymous North American bar industry experts (including bartenders, bar owners, drinks media and well-travelled cocktail connoisseurs) from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean."

Breaking down the rankings by country

This year, Mexico City's Handshake Speakeasy takes the number one spot. Mexico City has a whopping nine bars on this year's list of 50, with Mexico overall taking 16 slots. However, New York City has 12 bars, and the U.S. overall just over half the entire list, with 26 places ranked in 2024, from Phoenix to Miami (and Chicago, New Orleans, L.A., San Francisco, and Washington D.C.)

The top-ranked Canadian bar is Toronto's Civil Liberties (21), with Vancouver's own Botanist Bar at the Fairmont Pacific Rim at number 24. Joining Botanist from Vancouver is The Keefer Bar t number 49. Both bars have been ranked on the list before, but never together. The Keefer Bar appeared on the 2022 North America's 50 Best Bars  rankings but did not return in 2023, while Botanist made its debut on the list last year.  Only seven Canadian bars made the list for 2024. 

Of Botanist Bar , the voting academy summarizes: "In a sophisticated space that feels as bright and airy as the surrounding restaurant, the tight-knit bar team led by beverage director Grant Sceney, draws inspiration from the natural bounty of the Pacific Northwest, sourcing and foraging local ingredients to mix into drinks that are equal parts showpiece and storytelling."

"Where expansion and modernization [have] eroded away at some of Chinatown’s history, the bar uses its place to spotlight its history through a unique drinks program that is inspired by old apothecaries," describes North America's 50 Best Bars of The Keefer Bar for its re-entry ranking.

Serving up Californian and West Coast favourites, the dishes at this casual eatery include inspiration from Korea, Mexico, Thailand and the Middle East. Among the menu highlights, according to Mia is the Bee Sting Pizza, with soppressata, spicy capicollo, red peppers and Mike’s Hot Honey. “The crust is thin and crispy, with some blackened bubbling,” she reports.

Billed as “posh” and “formal,” this downtown Vancouver restaurant isn’t too fancy for a few pizzas on its menu. In fact, Mia notes that not one, but two, of the Ferrari of pizza ovens are at play in this place. The pizzas at Acquafarina, according to Mia, are “rustic, sturdy and nicely bubbled and charred.”

Capo and The Spritz

Where: 350 Davie Street, Vancouver

From the team behind the beloved Vancouver eateries Autostrada (Vancouver House and Main Street), this Yaletown restaurant serves up fresh salads, pastas and, of course, pizzas. For fans who keep things refreshingly straightforward (think: a margherita, pepperoni, mushroom and the like), Mia says the Capo pies are “sturdy enough for toppings without toppling” and feat a “flavourful crust with some char and a chewy crumb.”

With fresh pastas and pizzas, this restaurant “hits all the high marks,” Mia reports. Featuring double-zero flour or gluten-free pizza crust options, the “crust is almost Neapolitan but sturdier and with more chew.” The Margherita, Capricciosa and Porchetta with broccoli rabe and mozzarella are said to be top-selling toppings.

Spacca Napoli

When The Vancouver Sun reached out to readers in 2018 in search of their favourite pizza places, Spacca Napoli was very near to the top of the list. The Port Moody pizza hotspot serves up pizzas straight out of Naples — but better. “I’ve had Neapolitan pizza at ground zero (in Naples), but I gotta say, I liked Spacca’s better,” Mia wrote. “The rustic crusts, nicely singed, have chew and great flavour.”

Where: 1190 Victoria Dr, Vancouver

A crowd favourite for many pizza eaters in Vancouver, Via Tevere is a fixture on many best-of lists. In fact, Mia called the Neopolitan pies from the neighbourhood restaurant “addictive.” The restaurant offers a variety of pizzas, categorized by sauce type — red sauce (al pomodoro),  olive oil based (bianca), and cream sauce (alla panna).

These 14 Vancouver brunch restaurants were just ranked as some of the best in Canada

British Columbians love brunch so it's no surprise that several Vancouver brunch restaurants have been ranked as some of the best in Canada.

OpenTable, an online reservation booking service, ranked Canada's Top 100 Brunch Restaurants for 2024 and 14 Vancouver restaurants made the list.

The OpenTable list was created by analyzing "more than 1.3 million diner reviews and metrics, including diner ratings and the percentage of restaurant reviews diners tagged as 'brunch,'" according to a press release.

As a whole, B.C. came in second with 25 of the best brunch spots in Canada, 14 of which are located in Vancouver. B.C. was only topped by Ontario, which had 50 of the best brunch restaurants.

Some of the most popular brunch spots in Vancouver include ARC Restaurant, which offers an all-you-can-eat brunch on weekends.

Honey Salt, located at the Parq Vancouver, and Zarak by Afghan Kitchen were also recognized.

We finally have an official opening date! One of Toronto’s highly anticipated hubs, Waterworks Food Hall is officially opening this June. The European-style food hall will be home to more than 20 different food stalls, a sitdown restaurant and much more. Here’s everything you need to know.

If you’ve strolled along Toronto’s Fashion District, then you’ve most likely come across the massive Waterworks Food Hall, located at 499 Richmond Street West.

And yes, this is the same spot where the beloved Lee’s Restaurant on King Street , relocated to.

The 55,000 sq. ft. space has been repurposed as a European-style food hall and will host more than 20 different food stalls featuring culinary favourites from around the world, according to the establishment.

“We are committed to preserving and revitalizing architectural landmarks that enhance the attraction and livability of Toronto’s neighbourhoods, and we are so pleased to be opening the Waterworks Food Hall in the King West community,” said Eve Lewis, President and CEO of Woodcliffe Landmark Properties.

“This project has been a true labour of love for us, and we are so proud of how it turned out.”

3. Dubai International Airport in UAE

Securing the third spot is Dubai International Airport, a culinary haven where global flavors converge. 

Reflecting the opulence and diversity of Dubai itself, this airport boasts a culinary landscape that ranges from fine dining establishments to bustling food halls.

Travellers can indulge in Middle Eastern delicacies at spots such as the Lebanese-inspired Comptoir Libanais, or gourmet treats at L’Éclair de Génie, a pastry shop that specialises in eclairs. 

For passengers native to the UK and U.S. who crave a taste of home, popular chains such as Shake Shack and Pret A Manger are also available in Terminals 1 and 5. 

2. Tokyo-Narita International Airport in Japan

Ranked as second on Food & Wine's roundup is Tokyo-Narita International Airport, celebrated for its authentic Japanese cuisine and premium sake bars. 

From sushi to ramen, passengers can indulge in a wide array of traditional delicacies before boarding their flights.

The airport's three terminals have a combined 88 restaurants, cafés and bars, including six Japanese restaurants which specialise in anything from soba and sushi to teishoku (set meals) and dashi-chazuke, as reported by Time Out Tokyo .

It's no surprise that Singapore's renowned Jewel Changi Airport has topped the list in offering the best food and drink in the world.

Not only has it been previously rated by  Skytrax  as one of the world's cleanest airports, Changi boasts incredible architecture, including the tallest and largest indoor waterfall in the world: the HSBC Rain Vortex, standing at 40 meters.

As well as its pool, free movie theatre and butterfly garden among some of its dozens of delightful amenities, Changi offers its passengers a whopping 100 food vendors to choose from, as well as a hawker street market and robot bartenders.
