What are Character Meals on Disney Cruises? An Overview

Disney cruises are renowned for their magical character dining events, where the enchantment of Disney is served right at your table. Whether it’s the sparkle in a child’s eyes when they see their favorite princess or the excitement of a Frozen-themed feast, these experiences are thrilling for kids and adults alike.

Character Dining on Disney Cruises - Wandering Oaken leads a toast

It’s important to note that many character dining experiences on Disney cruise ships are more show-based , contrasting with the one-on-one interactions at places like Chef Mickey’s or Cinderella’s Royal Table in the Disney theme parks . So, those expecting a traditional park-style dining encounter might find the shipboard experience slightly different (or even underwhelming). If one-on-one character time is important to you, be sure to select one of the experiences that specifically offers that.

Here’s a rundown of the character meals:

  • Special Character Dining Events: Disney Cruise Line hosts dining with princesses and Frozen characters, with photos and interactions. Magical décor and kid-friendly menus provide an immersive experience. Reservations are required, and these are not included in the fare.
  • Rotational Dining Shows with Characters: These dinner shows transform mealtime into a spectacle. Draw a character that later dances with Disney icons or indulge in Frozen-themed fun. Animator’s Palate is a prime example, offering an innovative twist on character engagement. These character dinners are included with your fare.
  • Disney Character Breakfasts (Limited) : These breakfasts, once a cherished tradition on 7-night and longer voyages, have been discontinued since the COVID pandemic . However, there is an offering that is almost like a traditional Disney character breakfast on sailings which feature a PIXAR Day at Sea . And Disney Cruise Line still offers various other character experiences throughout the ship.

Whether it’s lunch with Elsa or a dinner show with Mickey, Disney Cruise Line’s character dining caters to everyone’s taste.

Although it was expensive, Ava found it well worth it!

Our Review : Olaf’s Royal Picnic was a hit with our friend Zach’s daughter, who is an Olaf fan. In Zach’s opinion, it was well worth the price – the unforgettable memories and joys shared are well worth the money.

Our Review : Jaimie and I appreciated the blend of familiar and adventurous food choices. Ben was ecstatic to interact with his favorite Frozen characters, while Ava was mesmerized by the magical environment. The quality of character entertainment and interactions was in a class by itself, far surpassing traditional character meals. The characters’ visits to our table , live musical performances, and the extraordinary setting made for a memorable dining experience for all of us. Even us jaded adults enjoyed it. The Arendelle experience was a highlight of our cruise, providing a delightful and immersive Frozen experience. It’s a must-do for any Frozen fans!

Our Review : Jaimie and I were impressed by the innovative technology and engaging Marvel-themed adventure. It felt like we were part of a Marvel movie, assisting Ant-Man and The Wasp to avert a crisis. Ben, being a Marvel fan, found this dining experience thoroughly entertaining. The food was good, and the décor was impressive, though not as magical as Arendelle. Ava found the experience fun but was not as engaged as she was at the Frozen-themed restaurant.

6. Rapunzel’s Royal Table

For true Tangled aficionados, don’t miss the angel hair pasta braided with caramelized sea scallops.
  • A Joyous Celebration : Enter the kingdom of Corona for a joyous celebration of Rapunzel’s birthday. The royal ballroom’s glowing wish lanterns and colorful drawings set the stage for live entertainment, including singing, dancing, and appearances by Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, and the mischievous Snuggly Duckling Thugs.
  • Interactive Experience : The dinner event includes a song-and-dance and brief table visits by the characters, making you feel part of the story. The spirited parade capping off the night ensures an engaging and festive experience for all.

Our Review : Rapunzel’s Royal Table was a dream come true for our daughter Ava, who adores Rapunzel. The characters stayed in their roles perfectly, adding to the magic. My wife and I appreciated the superb service and elegance of the event. Though the food was good, it was secondary to the immersive experience. Between the visual wonders, lively entertainment, and regal setting, the night was filled with fairy tale magic, making it an essential part of our Disney cruise.

7. Tiana’s Place

Performers in brightly-colored Mardi Gras costumes at Tiana's Place on the Disney Wonder cruise ship

For those seeking a joyous and lively celebration of southern charm, Tiana’s Place offers an unforgettable experience, complete with live jazz and iconic storytelling.

  • Location : Disney Wonder
  • Bounty from the Bayou : Savor Creole and Cajun cuisine like New Orleans Seafood Pepper Pot, Cajun-spiced sea bass, and delightful desserts like Tiana’s Buttermilk Beignets and New Orleans Banana Foster Sundae.
  • A Swinging Supper Club : Step into a festive New Orleans-style family gala with toe-tapping live jazz that brings The Princess and the Frog to life. Experience genteel southern charm in a vivid, brightly lit restaurant where they celebrate Mardi Gras nightly.
  • Character Engagement : Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder has appearances by Tiana and Louis (the trumpeting alligator). We briefly said hello to Tiana at the entrance, but I don’t recall much at-the-table interaction during the dinner.

Our Review : Jaimie and I were transported into the enchanting world of New Orleans at Tiana’s Place. The jazzy atmosphere and playful interactions with Tiana and Prince Naveen made for a lively evening. We delighted in the flavorful Cajun dishes, and the Buttermilk Beignets were a standout dessert that we both loved. The blend of live music, storytelling, and southern charm created a festive and unique dining experience. We can’t wait to share this magical experience with our kids in the future!

8. Hey Howdy Breakfast with Woody and Friends

For Pixar enthusiasts eager to join the fun, the Hey Howdy Breakfast offers a thrilling experience with Woody and his friends.

  • Location : Animator’s Palate — offered only on cruises featuring a PIXAR Day at Sea.
  • Cost : Included in your cruise fare, but reservations are required
  • A Special Not-Quite-A-Character-Breakfast Dining Event : Though character breakfasts on Disney Cruise Line have been discontinued, this new experience brings Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye to life in a unique way. Savor a breakfast feast while enjoying an interactive show from the stage. No face-to-face meetings are required (or offered), though the characters may pass relatively close by your table during the meal. It’s important to note that Disney is very careful not to call this a “character breakfast,” so don’t expect the same type of one-on-one attention you might get at, say, Chef Mickey’s.
  • Live Entertainment Extravaganza : The Hey Howdy Breakfast is more than a meal. Woody appears on stage with his pals to sing, dance, and interact with guests from “on stage.” This creates a lively, engaging atmosphere that goes beyond the typical dining experience.
  • Reservations : Must reserve in advance; no walk-ups.

Our Review : We haven’t had the opportunity to try the Hey Howdy Breakfast with Woody and Friends yet, but the idea of breakfast with some of Pixar’s most beloved characters sounds like fun! The blend of delicious food and innovative, interactive entertainment offers a unique twist on the traditional character meal, and it’s on our list for the next Disney Fantasy cruise.

Disney Character Dining: Pros and Cons

  • Unique Interactions : Enjoy memorable and sometimes personal interactions with your favorite Disney characters.
  • Extended Time with Characters : Dinner shows provide more time to see characters compared to brief meet-and-greets.
  • Smart Use of Time : Seeing characters during meals at restaurants lets you “multitask,” freeing up more leisure time on the rest of your cruise.
  • Engaging Storytelling : Experience the fun and engaging Disney storytelling during your meal.
  • Themed Menus : Savor delicious meals inspired by the characters’ worlds, adding to the immersion.
  • Family Fun : An entertaining and joyous activity for the whole family to enjoy together.
  • Included in Cruise Fare : Most character dining experiences are part of the standard dining schedule and included in your Disney cruise fare , meaning no additional cost.
  • Additional Costs for Some Events : Select character dining experiences require an additional payment on top of your cruise fare.
  • Fixed Dining Times : The scheduled dining times might not align with everyone’s preferences or needs.
  • Potential Distraction for Children : The excitement of character interactions might distract some children from eating their meals.
  • Possibly Loud and Busy : Depending on the event, the environment can be a bit loud and bustling, which might not suit all guests.

Tips for Disney Character Meals

  • Know the Schedule : Familiarize yourself with the dining times and character appearances to plan your day accordingly.
  • Bring a Camera : Don’t forget to capture the memories with photographs. Many dining experiences also have official photographers on hand.
  • Consider Dietary Restrictions : If anyone in your party has dietary restrictions, make sure to notify the cruise line or your travel agent in advance.
  • Prepare Your Children : If your kids are shy or apprehensive around characters, prepare them beforehand so they know what to expect.
  • Understand the Costs : Determine what’s included in your cruise fare and what might require additional payment to avoid surprises.
  • Manage Expectations : Explain how the character dining works to your kids so they know what to expect (i.e., sometimes there is no meet-and-greet).
  • Enjoy the Experience : Engage with the characters, participate in the activities, and immerse yourself in the experience. This total participation will make it fun for everyone!

Will Disney Character Breakfasts Return to the Ships?

Disney Cruise Line’s character breakfasts were discontinued during the COVID pandemic and have not returned. There is a possibility that this beloved experience may make a complete return to Disney Cruise Line in the future. The appearance of the Hey Howdy Breakfast with Woody and Friends — which is almost a character breakfast — is certainly a positive sign.

Meeting Disney Characters on Disney Cruises (Outside of Dining)

Apart from character dining experiences, you can meet and greet your favorite characters at common areas, special gatherings, and themed cruises. Character appearances vary by sailing, so consult your schedule to enjoy these magical opportunities!

Is Character Dining Worth It on Disney Cruise Line?

Character dining on Disney Cruises offers both included experiences and paid events with beloved Disney characters. Whether it’s worth it depends on your family’s preferences, budget, and the ages and interests of your children .

The included character dining is a definite Disney must, providing unique interactions and immersive storytelling.

The paid events, although expensive, can be amazing experiences for youngsters who adore the characters involved.

Consult with a Disney travel agent for questions or assistance in deciding or booking your VIP character dining experiences.

Here's what Disney's character dining looks like during COVID

The popular Chef Mickey breakfast is back.

If you haven't experienced character dining at Disney, were you even there at all?

But character dining - as with most things during the global pandemic - looks different these days. Walt Disney World's popular Chef Mickey breakfast at the Contemporary Hotel made its post-pandemic debut just before the holidays.

What's the same: Mickey and Minnie, along with several friends, dancing and parading around the dining room. Plenty of Mickey waffles to go around. Excited kids and photo-snapping parents. You can eat as much as you like.

What's different: Instead of a buffet, the food is served at the table, family style. No more hugging the characters or getting close up for photos - guests must social distance. Instead of high fives, virtual fist bumps.

There's also a few new menu items in addition to the classics.

I went on a Disney staycation cruise with my 4-year-old. Here's what it was like on board, and what we did to prepare.

  • We went aboard a Disney staycation cruise and sailed for two nights with our four-year-old.
  • Nearly two years on from our last real vacation, we'd forgotten what it was like to travel with a child.
  • We decided to plan ahead and focus on three areas: pre-travel, day of travel, and on the sea.

Insider Today

December 2019 was the last time we took a flight together as a family and went out on a proper vacation. That was our 30th flight with our then 2-year-old, and my husband and I had become pro-travelers with a toddler. From flying to the sunny Bahamas and magical Maldives to the cobbled streets of Prague, we had done it all. Then the pandemic hit and we all went into lockdown.

Like everybody else we were skeptical about boarding flights and leaving the country. So we settled instead on a Disney staycation cruise , sailing around the UK for three days and two nights.

Nearly two years on from our last proper vacation, we'd forgotten what it was like to travel with a child. Also, my 65-year-old parents were to accompany us, so we felt we needed to be more cautious. We decided to plan ahead and focus on three areas: pre-travel, day of travel, and on the sea.

Pre-travel: check your booking, plan some activities, upload your documents

The Disney website is easy to use and allows you to access your reservation and plan your activities well in advance. There are some free activities, such as youth club slots and karaoke, but there are also a ton of paid activities to choose from. We timed our son's youth club activity with some beer tasting for the grown-ups.

The check-in process is very similar to airline travel, in that you're required to upload identification documents. Disney also asks you to upload proof of COVID-19 vaccination if you're over 18. Under-18s must buy a rapid test and upload the result at least 24 hours before boarding.

Once all your documents are uploaded, Disney verifies and completes your check in, and you're good to go!

Now let's pack. There are lots of things to do – sit-down dinners, informal lunches, poolside drinks, water activities, and more – so there are lots of looks to consider. We packed a variety of clothes but we still traveled light.

There's an option to check in your luggage at the terminal before boarding, and leave your suitcase outside your room for collection the night before leaving. This gives you the flexibility to carry just a handbag before getting to your stateroom at 4 p.m.

On the day: fill up your snack bag, keep your water bottle handy, and mask up while you wait to board

We started our day early. The cruise was set to sail from Tilbury, a container port in East London. The port was clearly signposted and we spotted the massive Disney cruise ship the moment we drove in.

We dropped off our luggage at the terminal and made our way to the COVID-19 testing centre.

Related stories

It's worth noting that everyone needed to get antigen testing done here, regardless of whether they'd had a negative test in the past five days. The test took fewer than five minutes. We were then directed to a waiting area to await the results.

This was easily the most nerve-wracking moment of the trip. We'd all been vaccinated, and my son's earlier antigen test had come back negative, but as we sat there waiting, we knew it could all have been for nothing. The cruise ship was right there in front of us, but right in the way of it was a wait of up to 45 minutes for our test results to come through.

After several rounds of scrolling through and refreshing my email inbox, I finally spotted the test results: all negative. We were cleared to board so we made our way to the ship.

We were welcomed aboard by none other than Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse and were informed that our staterooms would be ready by 3 p.m. We were hungry so we made our way to Cabana, a family buffet with a larger-than-life spread of cuisines including fish and chips, lasagnas, Indian curry, oriental food, Mexican burritos, and so much more.

We finished our lunch in time to get the keys for our stateroom. It was nice and spacious and boasted a private veranda overlooking the English Channel. We decided to park ourselves for a bit, get familiar with the ship, and get ready for the whirlwind ahead.

On the sea: quick meals at Cabana, meet-and-greet Disney characters, and rotational dining

COVID-19 restrictions, such as social distancing, were in place throughout the cruise. Guests were required to wear face masks when not dining. Social distancing was also in place for character meet-and-greets, something our 4-year old wasn't happy about: he wanted to run to Spider-Man and Thor and hug them.

Once on board, guests could access an itinerary on the Disney Cruise Line app. Our four-year-old's sole focus was to meet as many superheroes (or people dressed as Avengers characters) as possible. So we went through the app and added all the relevant events to our itinerary.

The cruise fare includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, at the restaurants Cabana, Animator's Palete, Rapunzel's Royal Table, and Lumiere's. The cruise boasts of "rotational dining" – a concept that encourages guests to enjoy each of the three themed dining venues while on board.

Our servers Valentin, Mario, and Gian were extremely warm and welcoming, and worked with us to get a perfect three-course meal experience. The restaurants are grand with interactive storytelling experiences. Each has its own theme, with live music and character appearances to enjoy while eating.

Food was a big part of our cruise experience but we also spent a lot of time exploring the ship, meeting our favorite superheroes, taking a dip in the pool, and watching Disney Dreams, a magical theatre performance at Walt Disney Theatre.

Overall, the two nights and three days we spent on the Disney cruise was a great experience. We got to spend a lot of time together as a family, made some great memories, and enjoyed a proper vacation for the first time in 18 months.

"I want to go back to the cruise again," said our 4-year-old as we got back in our car to drive back home.

Only Three Of Disney's Character Dining Experiences Have Re-Opened—And They're Actually More Enjoyable Than Before

Socially distant selfie, anyone?

selfie with minnie at disney character dining

As I looked to see what my options were for character dining I saw that only one was available to all Disney guests right now. It was at Topolino's Terrace at Disney's Riviera Resort for Breakfast à la Art with Mickey and Friends. I snagged up the prized reservation for my mom and I and waited for the day I could finally see Mickey and his friends while I munched on waffles. My sweet mom was along for this trip because having a buddy when you're stepping into the unknown is always a good idea, and she quickly became my official photographer.

The day of my breakfast reservation arrived and we hopped in my car to drive from Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge-Kidani Village, where we were staying, to Disney's Riviera Resort, where breakfast was to take place. We were first greeted by the security guard who checked his list of registered diners and checked my ID. After parking and getting out of my car I felt a little apprehension. I hadn't done character dining in months, and now because of Disney's new health and safety protocols it was going to look different. My mind started racing because of the unknown, but was quickly put at ease by a Disney cast member (Disney speak for employee) as I walked through the front doors of the hotel.

My mom and I were greeted, and he asked where we were headed. I told him we were going to Topolino's Terrace for breakfast with my main mouse, and he then asked if he could show us to the elevator. We obliged, and along the way he gave a mini tour of the hotel, including a cafe that was themed after the Walt Disney animated classic "The Aristocats," a hallway filled with pictures of Walt Disney and his family on vacations in the French riviera, and a small dark library filled with old artifacts from The Walt Disney Company. Once we got to the elevator, he pressed the call button and the floor button for us so we didn't have to touch anything until we got to breakfast.

Once up to the rooftop restaurant, I noticed I had a push notification from the Walt Disney World app saying I could mobile check-in for our reservation. To mobile check-in at any restaurant all you have to do is open the push notification and go through the prompts. Some of the prompts include how big your party is, if you need handicapped accessible seating, dietary restrictions, if you're celebrating anything, and adding your phone number so Disney can text you when your table is ready. The thing I liked most about mobile check-in was that it could be done on the way to the restaurant, up to 30 minutes in advance of your reservation, so your table is ready when you get there. This was a great addition to the guest experience, and I hope it stays after Disney is able to relax some of their social distancing rules.

Once we were called to be seated, the hostess took us by the wine and pasta displays and noted that, at dinner, Topolino's Terrace is known for their hand rolled pasta dishes, which I really want to go back and try now. We were seated in the interior of the restaurant, where we had a panoramic view of Walt Disney World thanks to floor to ceiling windows. From our vantage point we could see Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park, Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, and quite a few resorts.

Our waitress came by to introduce herself and drop off a super cute pastry basket that looked like a paint bucket that was filled with muffins, croissants, and maple danishes. She also took our drink order and mentioned how the QR code menu worked. All of the restaurants at Disney are using a QR code on a small sheet of paper to pull up menus instead of handing out standard menus to make your service mostly contactless. Using the QR code was easy, and it can be pulled up by almost any smartphone. I have an iPhone 11, and all I had to do was open the camera app on my phone and hold it over the code. In moments, a Safari drop down notification came up to press so I could view the menu. If you have an Android device, you're going to want to download a QR code reader before heading to Walt Disney World since some Android phones don't have the camera QR code reader capability.

After our coffee and juice arrived, we were ready to order our entrees. One great thing at Breakfast à la Art with Mickey and Friends is that it's a base price of $42 for adults and $27 for kids. That price includes coffee and juice and your entree. But the secret to this type of "base price" dining is that you can order a second entree without an additional fee. The secondary entree will be somewhat modified to be a smaller portion and not include a side, which increases the value of breakfast exponentially. All you need to do is confirm with your waitstaff what you want as your primary entree and what you want as your secondary entree so the kitchen will know how to plate everything.

disney character dining

My mom and I both ended up ordering the quiche gruyère for our main entree, which comes with house-made pancetta, roasted potatoes, and field greens that are tossed in a lemon vinaigrette. We decided to share a secondary entree, which had to be the sour cream waffles that are topped with roasted apples, chantilly cream, and orange maple syrup! Typically this comes with a side of breakfast meat, but if it's your secondary entree you will need to request the side of bacon or sausage, which our waitress was more than happy to accommodate.

After we were done ordering, a restaurant-wide announcement came in saying Mickey was taking a break from being a painter to come see everyone. This is the part of our breakfast that I was most nervous about. How would this modified character dining work when I couldn't actually get up to hug Mickey or take the perfect Instagram-worthy photo with him? All of those apprehensions left as soon as Mickey made his way over to our side of the restaurant.

All of the characters at breakfast walked the same path on the outside of the restaurant, and would stop briefly to take a socially distant selfie with guests. Once I figured this out, I was prepared for the next character to bound around the room. Characters that appear at Breakfast à la Art with Mickey and Friends include painter Mickey, writer Minnie, sculptor Donald, and ballerina Daisy. Each character's new costumes are worth the trip to Topolino's Terrace, even if you are missing park time. Mickey and his pals make their way around the room about every five to seven minutes so it's super easy to see everyone even before you get your breakfast plates.

disney character dining

One thing I always hated about character dining before coronavirus was how long it took to see each character, then having to abruptly stop my meal to hop up and take a picture every so often. At Breakfast à la Art with Mickey and Friends we were able to see all four characters before our breakfast even arrived, making our actual eating time much more relaxed.

Speaking of our breakfast, it was fantastic, really. It arrived at our table within 15-20 minutes after ordering, it was piping hot, and plated with care. My mom and I loved both of the entrees we picked out. (P.s. Right now at Disney World, everyone from chefs to food runners at a restaurant are still getting used to the new procedures just like we were as guests.)

While we ate our breakfast, we continued to see all of the characters, but since we already had our selfies, my mom and I just waved as they paraded by so other tables could have a few extra prized seconds with Donald or Mickey. Near the end of our breakfast, an announcement was made that all four characters would be coming out to celebrate with everyone. In each corner of the room a different character was stationed while a fun celebration song played overhead. I thought this was a great way to make anyone with a birthday, anniversary, or other big milestone feel important while still maintaining Disney's social distancing standards.

Our meal was done and before we left, our waitress brought an autograph card that looked similar to a postcard with all of the characters signatures. Since autograph books aren't able to be used right now, this was a fun alternative to something most people look forward to at a character dining experience.

disney character dining

Disney did take the time to think about how they could still have character dining experiences and still make those special moments for guests even if the experience isn't exactly the same as when we did it pre-covid. One thing I want to make sure everyone knows is that going to Walt Disney World right now is a very personal decision you have to make on your own, and that includes any type of dining you might want to enjoy. Menus are pared down because of the meat shortage and cost-effectiveness of running a restaurant right now. Taking time to look at those before you go will help you to make a better decision on where to dine.

If you do decide you want to try character dining, you really should consider Breakfast à la Art with Mickey and Friends. This is the only character dining at a Walt Disney World-owned hotel right now making it a must-get reservation for many guests. When Epcot opens on July 15, the Garden Grill restaurant inside The Land pavilion will also host character dining but you must have an Epcot park pass to dine there. There is one other character dining experience at Disney at the Four Season Orlando located inside the exclusive Golden Oak community. Revello has started their Good Morning Breakfast with Goofy and Pals again. This character dining experience is only available on Saturdays, and you must have a reservation to attend.

I'm glad I went to Topolino's Terrace for Breakfast à la Art with Mickey and Friends. My very honest opinion is that I like this modified character dining even more than I liked character dining how it was before coronavirus. Our service was impeccable, and the food was top-notch. Eating at any Disney restaurant is always a highlight of my trips to the parks. Doing so at such a beautiful restaurant where I can see my favorite characters makes this experience skyrocket to the top of my must-eat list.

Disney cruise vs. Disney World: Which is the more magical vacation?

Summer Hull

If you're in the mood for a Disney vacation, it's natural for your first thought to go to one of the Disney theme parks, such as Disney World or Disneyland . But as someone who loves the Disney parks, I'm here to tell you that's not always the best Disney vacation. In fact, it's entirely possible that for some families — and some trips — the better Disney vacation is the one you'll find at sea on a Disney cruise.

So, which do you choose: a Disney cruise or Disney World?

There are pros and cons to each choice. Disney parks have gotten more expensive with an a la carte pricing model that no longer includes airport transfers, FastPasses and other nice-to-have conveniences. A theme park vacation can also be complicated to plan, especially if you haven't been to Disney in several years and aren't familiar with the current rules and ways to minimize wait times.

At the same time, some fantastic new rides have opened in the last few years. You also have your choice of dozens of resort hotels at different price points, and it's hard to beat that feeling of walking down Main Street, U.S.A. toward the castle.

Meanwhile, on a Disney cruise , things have mainly stayed the same as they have been for the past 25 years, with activities, entertainment, lodging and most of your dining included in one cruise price. And yes, Mickey and his friends are found on board, so you can still get that photo and hug with your favorite pal.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

But while you'll find Mickey both on a Disney cruise and at Disney World, the two vacation experiences are quite different. Here's a look at a Disney cruise versus a trip to Disney World to help you decide which family vacation is better for you.

Related: Are the Disney Visa credit cards worth it?

Both a Disney cruise and a trip to Disney World are large financial investments, so both are going to require some level of planning to be sure you are getting the most from your dollars and time.

That said, in both cases, you can leave many of the arrangements to the Disney vacation planning professionals , who can walk you through what you really need to know and book the main components of the trip.

For Disney World, decisions to make include where to stay and which park tickets are best for you (after factoring in how many days you wish to visit, whether or not you want to park hop, etc.). You'll want to book your sit-down meals 60 days in advance and familiarize yourself with the Disney Genie+ system if you don't want to spend hours each day in line. Although things could change in 2024, right now, you can't select any of your Genie+ attractions in advance, so you'll be doing that on your trip.

For a Disney Cruise Line sailing, you'll have to decide if you prefer a newer or more classic ship, where you want to go, which port to sail from and how many days you wish to sail.

For example, you could sail out of Port Canaveral in Florida on Disney Wish for a three- or four-night sailing to the Bahamas, spend a week cruising around Alaska on Disney Wonder or sail in Europe on Disney Dream . At certain times of the year, you'll also find Disney Cruise Line sailings out of Texas, Louisiana and California.

Once you pick a sailing, ship and cabin, you don't actually have to plan anything in advance unless you want to book excursions in port. It's common to prebook shore tours for Europe and Alaska cruises, but on Bahamas sailings, many families simply head to the beach in port or enjoy being on the ship. For trips like that, minimal planning is required once you lock in the basics.

With a Disney cruise, dinner each night at a pre-assigned sit-down restaurant is included in your fare, and you only need to select an early or late seating in advance. The buffet, room service and on-deck grab-and-go food are available for no extra charge during the day. You only have to plan out meals if you want a reservation at one of the adults-only restaurants on board.

Winner : Both a Disney cruise and a Disney World vacation require some advance planning. How much planning the cruise requires depends on the destination you select, so it might be more planning intensive than Disney World. However, some Disney cruises likely require less planning than the average Disney World vacation.

Because both a Disney World vacation and a Disney cruise can vary widely when it comes to cost, it's hard to compare the two, but we'll do our best to give you an example.

We'll compare the cost of a four-night trip in October for a family with two adults and two children (assuming a stay at the cheapest available Deluxe resort hotel, three sit-down meals and three park days at Disney World without park hopping but with Genie+ for two days) to a four-night October sailing out of Port Canaveral on the newest Disney ship sailing, Disney Wish, in a room with a verandah.

Disney World vacation cost:

  • Moderate resort stay at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge for four nights from Oct. 7 to 11, 2024, plus three days of park tickets: $3,243.82
  • Two days of Genie+ and Lightning Lanes: $350 (estimated)
  • Disney Dining Plan: $992
  • Total: $4,585

Disney Cruise vacation cost:

  • Oct. 7 to 11, 2024, sailing on Disney Wish in a verandah room: $5,550.12 (not including gratuities or extras)

The reality is that a Disney cruise can be cheaper or more expensive than a Disney World vacation, largely depending on when you sail — and, of course, which cabin you choose.

While prices vary seasonally at Disney World, they don't vary quite as dramatically as at sea. For this exercise, I picked an October week that is fall break for some schools for comparison, but a four-night Disney cruise on Disney Fantasy out of Port Canaveral in mid-January 2025 can be purchased starting at $3,479 for the same family of four.

Winner : A Disney World vacation costs less than a Disney cruise in this exercise. A cruise can be cheaper than a park trip, but keep in mind that demand and prices for Disney cruises are currently pretty high. The odds are decent that a cruise will cost you a little more than a similar Disney World trip right now, at least during traditional school breaks.

Accommodations

At Disney World, you can choose from Value resorts with rooms starting around $100 per night and three-bedroom grand villas (bookable with cash or rented Disney Vacation Club points ) with themes ranging from the South Pacific to the African savannah — or an option that falls somewhere in between.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

On a Disney cruise, most cabins measure between 169 and 237 square feet (not including any verandahs), with just a few very expensive cabins coming in larger.

Winner : Disney World is the clear winner in this category. While the Disney cruise cabins are certainly functional, it's hard to beat Disney World's variety of lodging options with multiple layouts, price points and themes.

You'd have to try hard to be bored on a Disney cruise. The ships have so much more than pools and waterslides.

Each ship offers a sunup to after-sundown schedule of mostly included activities ranging from trivia, game shows and karaoke to Broadway-caliber performances, pirate parties, character meet-and-greets and more. Onboard kids and teen clubs are free to use and offer activities for children ages 3 to 17 years old.

When the ship pulls into port, you can do everything from dog sledding in Alaska to gelato tasting in the Mediterranean to relaxing on a beach in the Caribbean.

Winner : Disney Cruise Line shines when it comes to available activities. While Disney World has no shortage of activities within its theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs entertainment area, a Disney cruise offers an even wider variety of activities, especially if you count all the things to do at each port.

Disney World offers a wide range of terrific restaurants . Options include dining "in space," eating barbecue with the toys from "Toy Story" and enjoying fine French cuisine. Vacationers can splurge on truly fine dining at Victoria & Albert's within Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and during a fantastic multicourse Japanese meal at Takumi-Tei within Epcot — it's not all chicken fingers and midmarket options.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

And if you like to budget your meals in advance, the Disney Dining Plan has made its return in early 2024 after a four-year hiatus. The Dining Plan allows you to prepay for your Disney meals and snacks for prices that range from $57 to $94 per adult, per day and $23 to $26 per child, per day, depending on which plan you select. It's possible to spend less on Disney meals by going that route if you are strategic about when and where you eat.

On all Disney cruise ships, guests eat free in three dinner venues on a rotating basis, and their servers follow them from restaurant to restaurant. On Disney Wish, for example, your serving team will join you each night in the three restaurants: Worlds of Marvel , Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure and 1923. A table is waiting for you each night, and your serving team gets to know you and your dining preferences. A show is included with two of the three restaurants, and the whole experience is a focal point of the day.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

The food is pretty good, too. It's not necessarily on the same level as the highest-end Disney World fine dining restaurants, but if you want that, go to the adults-only restaurants that do cost a bit extra, such as Palo or Enchante , to get that same type of experience (but for a lot less).

Winner : A Disney cruise trumps Disney World for dining thanks to its convenient options and innovative rotational dining system. Not to mention, you can enjoy multiple meals and snacks each day without paying a cent beyond your original cruise fare.

Thrill factor

Y'all know where this one is heading — and yes, if you are after thrills, the thrill rides at Disney World tip this category into the theme park's corner. It's hard to beat the almost 60 mph launch on Tron Lightcycle Run or the backward launch on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind .

disney cruise character breakfast covid

Disney cruise ships feature some tame waterslides, though the AquaDunk waterslide on Disney Magic is not for the faint of heart. If you want a good adrenaline rush at sea, book that ship. You might also find that hanging out at the front of the ship while it's heading out to sea is pretty cool in its own right. You might be able to find some thrills in port (like a zip lining excursion in Alaska), but it depends on your cruise destination.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

Winner : Disney World is the clear winner if you want thrill-seeking to be the focus of the trip. Just be sure to load up on Lightening Lanes for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Expedition Everest — Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Space Mountain and Tron Lightcycle Run. Save the cruise for a different type of vacation.

Multigeneration-friendly

Disney World is often a strenuous vacation for many families. That's because it's the size of San Francisco, meaning you'll generally cover 10 miles or more on foot per day just to get around, and you will often feel compelled to start early and/or stay late to feel like you're getting your money's worth.

That can be tough for anyone not used to that pace (and heat), but it can be an especially challenging vacation for those who are significantly older or younger than the rest of their group. Even if your family members can handle the distance using scooters and/or strollers, not all attractions are a great match for everyone due to height restrictions and the rough impact of certain thrill rides.

On the other hand, a Disney cruise excels at having something for every age group. Even if everyone fills their days differently — splitting up to enjoy the various kids and teen clubs and adults-only bars and restaurants — you can meet up again for the shows and meals in the evening.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

Winner : Disney Cruise Line excels when it comes to multigenerational vacations. From the nursery and kids and teen clubs to the onboard talks, adults-only pool area, waterslides, drink tastings and evening programming, I can't think of a better trip for a mixed-generation group than a Disney cruise. You can find something to please just about everyone within a few decks.

As fun as the theme parks are — and they really are — I wouldn't call them truly relaxing trips. Sure, you could spend your days by the pool or even the spa, but most of the time, a trip to Disney World is a fun, busy adventure.

Disney cruises differ in that Disney Cruise Line ships are made for you to spend time relaxing and enjoying the ride — out on the deck, in the spa or even in your cabin gazing out the window. "Busy" on a cruise means a schedule packed with meals, pool time and the occasional participatory game show, not hauling miles and miles across a theme park to get in the next line.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

Winner : Disney Cruise Line wins this category, as a Disney cruise feels far more relaxing than a Disney World vacation.

Service is a strength of the Disney company both on land and at sea; however, the staffing ratios and nature of the interaction at sea tip the scales in favor of Disney Cruise Line. The crew can provide far more personalized and higher-quality service aboard Disney's ships than is possible in a theme park. At Disney World, your interactions with staff usually last just a few seconds as you climb aboard the next attraction or pay for that Dole Whip ice cream treat.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

Even on the shorter cruises, some of the onboard staff will get to know your family's names and your kids' preferences. It's not uncommon for your dinner servers and room hosts to start to feel like friends, especially if you are on one of the slightly longer voyages.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

Winner : A Disney cruise features all kinds of service extras you won't get on land, such as towel animals waiting for you in your cabin each evening and your favorite drinks magically appearing as soon as you sit down to dinner. This level of service is what makes a Disney cruise feel magical in ways that are too difficult to recreate at the parks.

Bottom line

My family and I are avid fans of both Disney World and Disney cruises. We make multiple trips to the theme parks in Florida annually and have taken seven Disney cruises, with several more already booked. While there are similarities between the two trips — the characters, the approaches to immersive storytelling, the service provided and the overall quality — the two vacations are different in many ways.

For us, we head to Disney World for busy fun, often meeting up with friends for an action-packed day full of rides and shows. We'll be on the go nonstop, doing and seeing all the things and often not getting a ton of sleep. We love the parks and want to return whenever we are packing up to leave, but we usually need a long nap the second we get back home.

A Disney cruise, on the other hand, truly feels like a vacation.

Depending on the sailing, the ports might be the highlight of the trip, especially in destinations such as Alaska and Europe. On others, the sea days when we snack all day, go to trivia games, order Mickey bars from room service, pop into an onboard Disney movie and simply enjoy being together as a family are the best part.

disney cruise character breakfast covid

Looking at a Disney cruise versus Disney World, it's hard to say which is the better family vacation. It all depends on what you want from the trip.

If you wish to truly relax, enjoy attentive service and pull off a multigeneration trip with something for everyone, look to Disney cruises first.

If you want to fill your days with thrills, fireworks and your favorite characters, can handle logging some serious miles and aren't scared off by navigating Genie+ and making dining reservations, then book that trip to Disney World. Save the cruise for when you want to relax a bit more.

As for me, I'm hoping you'll find us at Disney World and on a Disney cruise this year because they are both the perfect family vacation for us — as long as we set the correct expectations before we embark on our adventure.

And, of course, if your budget and time-off schedule permit, you don't have to choose between the two trips. Many Disney Cruise Line sailings depart from Port Canaveral, which is only a one-hour drive (or Disney bus ride) away from Disney World, so you can easily combine several busy, thrill-seeking days at the parks with a short three- or four-night Disney cruise to create one weeklong trip.

Now that is what we call a vacation win.
