Our most beautiful tour.  Catch the beauty of the coast at sunset and twilight as we venture to Bird Island to see the Sunset.  This is our personal favorite as it's relaxing and absolutely beautiful even on cloudy days.  We leave 1 hour before Sunset.

Took the family on a fishing trip with TourH20 and I can't express enough how great Captain Jim and the trip was. My two young boys had a blast with my oldest catching 6 fish, which he made sure to remind me that he caught more every 5 minutes. Captain Jim is awesome, very knowledgeable about the local area and is great with kids. We spent the majority of time fishing which most charters don't do. Every step of the way he explained what he was doing to get the kids involved and even let them drive! His boat is very well maintained and it has plenty of room for you to walk around. Captain Jim even took us out to see some of the old Civil War ship wrecks which I enjoyed. I highly recommend booking one of his tours, you won't be disappointed. Thanks again Captain Jim we'll definitely be back!

Katie, thank you for taking time to leave us a good review. And please let us know what we can do better next time to earn that fifth star.

Today we took a two hour pontoon boat ride on the Intercoastal Waterway. We booked it by calling because we wanted to make sure it would only be the captain and my wife and I (due to covid). Easy to book on phone, then we had to change day, called back, easy to change day. Our captain Inman was awesome!! On the way back we saw a bunch of dolphins including a baby!! Some of them came close to the boat, including one that came toward the boat face first so we got a good look at the dolphin's face. Awesome service, awesome time, we are going to go again sometime in the near future and we found out they also have a location in OIB at Sharkys. Great time!!

DJ, wonderful to hear that you had a great time! Inman is one of our best and is getting even better. Thank you!

Uber H2O was a great experience. We booked a 2 hour trip for our whole family to see "around the island". We are new to Oak Island and wanted to see around from the water. Captain Jim took us all around the Intracoastal and out to Bald Head Island. It was a great trip and we even got to stop for lunch at Fishy Fishy Cafe! The wife and kids all enjoyed it, which is probably the best endorsement I can give!

Aug 6, 2018

Anthony, thank you for taking time to give me a review. It was wonderful spending time with your family today. And the junior captains did great!

Photo of Ross W.

Great Guy, great service. Came down for a bachelor weekend, didn't want to drive to the bar, picked us up at the closest dock available, took us straight to the Inlet View. Gave us more than enough time to eat and drink, didn't rush us. On the way back saw tons of dolphins, and gave us a few minutes to stop and "chase" them. I would recommend to do it. He told us "I've seen dolphins on every ride except for one."

I'm sorry that I have not responded to your review before now. YELP has it (along with 131 other reviews) listed in the "Not Recommended" section because they say their algorithm isn't sure it's valid. In fact, the number of reviews that are recommended has changed from 8, to 11, to 7 and now to 4. Which means that they keep changing whether they believe it or not. And it appears to be a result of whether we spend money to advertise with them. Of 135 five star reviews, they only list four as being verifiable. We think it's important that the public is aware of the scam that YELP is running and hopefully it will keep people from using an dishonest program such as theirs for advertising and searching. But I also want to thank you for using our services and for taking the time to write such a great review for us!

Nature Up Close: H20’s Nature and Alligator Boat Tours

h20 tours ocean isle

Anthony Savarese holds a Rough Green Tree Snake while he pilots the “Patricia Anne” around the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

Anthony Savarese has many titles: licensed Master Captain, Clemson-certified Master Naturalist, H2O Sports partner, science teacher … but the title he is most passionate about is conservationist.

Savarese, a Hilton Head Island native who began his career with H2O Sports as an employee 20 years ago, has been in charge of H2O’s Nature and Alligator Boat Tours for nearly eight years. The tour, located in the heart of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve—the largest tract of undeveloped land on Hilton Head Island at over 600-acres—primarily focuses on education and preservation, with Savarese and his captains striving to instill an appreciation for the Preserve’s native flora and fauna on every trip.

“We want our guests to leave with respect and appreciation for what the Preserve has to offer,” Savarese said. “The lake systems and surrounding areas are vital to the overall health of the island’s ecosystem. It’s important we protect it but also reflect positively on Sea Pines for allowing us to operate there.”

h20 tours ocean isle

A female alligator suns herself in the grass on the banks of Lake Mary.

Even more important is ensuring guests walk away from the tours with a better understanding of alligator behavior, their history, and role in our ecosystem, he noted. In his book, An Informative Guide to the Sea Pines Forest Preserve , a project published in 2020 after a year of painstaking writing and research, Savarese points out that living among alligators can be enriching and rewarding. However, they are still large and powerful predators that need to be regarded with caution.

“Never feed the alligators,” Savarese said, the gravity of the bad practice weighted in his every word. “It often leads to unwanted encounters with humans and will result in the euthanization of the animal.”

Yet just as quickly as the serious educator makes his presence known, the enthusiastic environmentalist takes over, discussing the desire he had to write about the incredible beauty and resilience of the American alligator and the numerous creatures with which it shares its habitat. “I wanted to write a field guide correlating to the many different species often seen on the boat tour to further educate guests who are interested in learning more. It’s reader- and kid-friendly since the language corresponds with a sixth grade science vocabulary.”

For Savarese, the alligator and nature tours aren’t merely a job. Instead, in both business and the classroom, he is driven by a deep-rooted, unparalleled sense of responsibility to the conservation of this beloved environment, with his knowledge and dedication clearly on display during his and H2O’s captains’ hour-long tours through three of the five manmade lakes in the Preserve.

Savarese trains all of H2O’s alligator tour captains himself, teaching them to deftly navigate Lake Thomas, Wood Duck Lake, and Lake Mary in fully covered 25-foot Duffy cruisers, while simultaneously identifying many species of birds, their nests, turtles, alligators, and other wildlife.

h20 tours ocean isle

Carol Barrientos helps guests disembark after an alligator tour.

The Duffys, eco-friendly and ultra-quiet electric vessels with no loud combustion engines to disrupt the peace of the preserve, increase the already high probability of viewing various animal species in their natural habitat. “They’re like golf carts on the water,” Savarese said.

The magic of the Duffy cruiser is apparent the moment you leave the dock. Surrounded by massive Live Oaks draped in Spanish moss, the all-encompassing quietude of the Preserve lends an ethereal quality to the trip. Even normally boisterous children can’t help but quietly “ooh” and “ahh” as the voyage begins.

h20 tours ocean isle

In addition to wildlife spotting, the tours focus on the interesting history and development of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

In addition to wildlife, the tours focus on the interesting history and development of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Year-round, the Preserve is bursting with life, thanks to an intricate system of manufactured lakes filled by rainwater, run-off, and hydrostatic pressure—a phenomenon caused by the pressure of the ocean leaching through our sandy loam soil to fill the five holes dug in the 1970s for the purpose of extracting development fill dirt. The process converts salt water into fresh, although the Preserve still employs multiple aerators to oxygenate the lakes, creating a healthy environment that encourages fish and other wildlife to thrive.

Birds abound in the Sea Pines Preserve, with Herons, Egrets, Osprey, Anhingas, and countless others all calling the area home. In winter months, ducks and other migratory birds make guest appearances, although the main attraction is the American alligator.

Savarese says the summer months are good for viewing alligators in the water since the ectothermic, or cold-blooded, animals depend on the cool waters of the lakes to keep their body temperatures from soaring. For guests eager to see the animals sunning themselves on the banks of the lakes, the spring or fall would be optimum for viewing.

h20 tours ocean isle

Hunter Kostylo charms   a new serpent friend.

Other reptiles are also plentiful, with a guest favorite being the rough green tree snake. Savarese and several of his captains are adept at gently plucking these beautifully colored, docile creatures from their homes in the wax myrtle trees surrounding the lakes, adding a fun and interactive element to the already educational tour. Children squeal with delight at this aspect of the trip, with a few braves souls eager to learn proper handling techniques so they can hold the harmless reptiles themselves.

As the only boat tour allowed in the Sea Pines Nature Preserve, H2O’s Nature and Alligator Boat Tour is an entertaining and highly educational trip for all ages. The long-standing businesses’ profound commitment to the preservation and conservation of the delicate ecosystem in which their tours operate ensures smiling guests leave the docks with a newfound sense of awe and wonderment at all the Lowcountry has to offer.

H2O’s Nature and Alligator Boat Tours operate year-round on a limited schedule. Peak season is April to September, with multiple trips per day being offered.

Seriously one of the best experiences I’ve ever had!!!! Review of: H2O Captain Eco-Tour Private Boat Excursions BWB...Repeat Spending the day with H2O’s Captain Mark and first mate, Lucky the dog, was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on vacation! I was nervous because I wanted to feel safe and our daughter is 20 months old and unpredictable (if you have a toddler, you know!). We received great communication ahead of time and when we arrived at the boat, Captain Mark laid out the safety plan upfront and eased my mind immediately. He was so kind and genuine- you can tell he truly loves hosting and exploring with you! We got super lucky and saw around 10 wild horses and then had a magical time at the Cape Lookout lighthouse. Before we left, he gave us options to adapt the plans if we needed to provide a different experience for my daughter so it took off all the pressure of trying to force it to be a good time- we were just present and enjoyed the whole day. We also learned about some of the larger sailboats and yachts we saw along with some history of the area and just soaked it all in. I will remember this time on the water forever- the beautiful day and also Captain Mark’s hospitality and kindness towards my family! Book this one with confidence and know it will be an incredible experience!!! --Amanda D.

Highly Recommended Experience Review of: H2O Captain Eco-Tour Private Boat Excursions BWB...Repeat Our family had a wonderful time exploring with Captain Mark and Lucky. The Captain was very knowledgeable and was diligent in making certain we had a fun/safe trip. We saw horses, a pod of dolphins (including a baby), a living starfish, crabs, and we returned with a bag full of shells. --Leigh L.

Awesome day on the boat doing the three island tour Review of: H2O Captain Eco-Tour Private Boat Excursions 3 Island Tour Awesome!!! Did the 3 island tour with 4 other girlfriends. We saw wild horses, a lighthouse boated around took a couple of dips in the water, had lunch on the boat, and just toured around. Captain Mark was fun, informative, and flexible. Highly recommend!! --Jenny M.

My family did the Boat, Walk, Beach, Repeat tour today and had a wonderful time. Capt. Mark is safety-conscious, deeply knowledgeable, and fun. On our way to Shackleford Island, we saw the Army Corps of Engineers doing an amphibious assault landing training, which was unusual, and a pod of dolphins playing near our boat, which was a bonus. The ride itself was fun, and the captain was careful to let us know when we would be speeding up and turning. When the island was in view we began seeing the beautiful horses gathered in family groups on the beach. We saw 11 horses on Shackleford Island. We followed the horse trails through the island to the beach on the opposite side of our landing, where we found some amazing shells. The captain told us about the island's history, identified the flora and fauna, identified the different types of shells, and really brought the island to life for us. We saw jellyfish and crabs, and, unfortunately, some trash that we took the time to pick up. Capt. Mark explained the hazards of the trash items to marine life. The return trip was just as much fun, and we saw another four horses near the Rachel Carson Reserve. The Money Island goats never showed themselves, but after seeing 15 horses during this tour we counted ourselves lucky. We enjoyed the tour of the waterfront as well - in fact, we had dinner that night at a restaurant we'd passed on the tour. Capt. Mark was attentive to our safety and comfort throughout the trip, and it was the best way to spend the last day of our vacation. I highly recommend this tour. Nicole D.

Excellent Eco-Tour of the Southern Outer Banks Review of: H2O Captain Eco-Tour Private Boat Excursions Double Trouble: Shack Attack and a Lighthouse We had a lovely day with Capt. Mark on the Shack and the Lighthouse excursion. Capt. Mark is a treasure trove of knowledge about the area and is a delightful conversationalist. Our group, 2 adults and 4 teens found the boat comfortable and well-appointed for these excursions. Of note, being a smaller boat you will feel the water - we found this refreshing and a more intimate way to see the surroundings. We have gone on many fishing charters in this area and found the Eco-Tour model to be a welcome change of pace and certainly more informative. We highly recommend! --Christopher T.

Highly Recommend!!! Review of: H2O Captain Eco-Tour Private Boat Excursions BWB...Repeat Captain Mark’s BWB Repeat excursion from Atlantic Beach was AMAZING!!! Captain Mark is friendly, professional, and accommodating! He did an incredible job at explaining various aspects of the area/nature and teaching us about navigating a boat. My husband and I had so much fun seeing the beautiful area by boat! And his dog Lucky is such a good pooch! --Amanda M.

- Cathy & Greg, Virginia, "BWB...Repeat" "Hi Captain Mark - Greg and I wanted to again thank u and Lucky for a great day on the water!  The weather was perfect, horses cooperated(lol!), and shelling was great but the company of u and your first mate is what made the trip special and first-rate!   This is a beautiful area and some place I didn't know existed on the outer banks.  So glad I found it as I was searching for a place to vacation. U offer up a great history of the area and really let us make the trip ours.  Greg was like a kid behind the wheel and thank u for letting him do that.   I'm sending a few pics from today and will send more when we get back home.  I sure hope some of the horse pics on the preserve turn out.  I was shaking some even though u kept the boat ever steady but part of that was my excitement at seeing another group of them.  Nature is so gorgeous.  People don't realize what they have until it is gone.   Hopefully, it will never come to that.  Again, thank u and Lucky so much!"

- Mary Ann W and her family, Houston, Texas, "BWB...Repeat" "Thank you again for an amazing adventure and a bonus to take our shelling bag."

- Steve R. Garner, NC "ROUND WE GO H20 ECO-TOUR WITH MASTER CAPTAIN MARK It was one of the most joyous, engaging, and informative three hours that we spent on our water cruise outside of Morehead City and Beaufort NC. Mark was an incredibly comforting and accommodating host who consistently adjusted the ride for special scenic views, as a bonus we saw the horses on Carrot Island and dolphins up close, and to maintain the safest possible movement. In all, we could only tout at the highest level booking a cruise with Captain Mark."

- Steve W, Ohio "That experience on the island certainly made the non-ideal weather conditions worth the trip. Holly and Jeff also went on and on about how great of a captain you were, pointing out various locations and talking about history. You were great! I’ll be posting a review sometime this week. Thanks again!!  Can't thank you enough.  My niece is still talking about it.  We all had a blast."

- Stephen M, Pine Knoll Shores, NC "Captain Mark goes the extra mile to make sure you have an excursion that you enjoy and that your agenda is satisfied. He is safe, considerate, congenial, and a very competent boat captain."

- David J, Morehead City, NC "Thank you again for the great day on the water."

-  Karla S. and Family, NC  "Good evening and I am so grateful for you for accepting, we do wish we could have done the whole thing but we knew the wind wasn't on our side but it was still so beautiful. We enjoyed it so much and thank you for what you did for my mother, it was just amazing and the sights we saw after, the horses, dolphins a true sign from her and God that they were there with us. I hope to see you again when the weather is better and under different circumstances. Have a blessed week and it was just a pleasure meeting and speaking with you. Thank you for the history surrounding the area."

- Jacquelene K, Raleigh, NC  "We had SO much fun and can't wait to come back for more!  Thank you so much."

- Brandon S, Chicago, IL “Thanks for a great experience Captain Mark. We had a great time. Can you please send me the picture you took of us? Also, any good restaurant recommendations?”

- Maurice & Sarah I, Greenwich, CT "Thank you. We appreciated you and the day."

- Lisa S, San Diego, CA,  "Thank you so much for sharing the pictures! We had such a great time."

- Amanda S and family, Charlotte, NC  "We had a great time today! The kids have been asking if we can get a boat all evening LOL."

- Joanie C, South Boston, VA,  "My family and I had an absolutely wonderful day yesterday on the H20 Captain. Captain Mark is so knowledgeable about the waterways as he navigates the area. We were lucky enough to even see dolphins on the way back from Cape Lookout! We would highly recommend H20 Captain for an amazing experience!"

- Wendy G, Durham, NC, "Thanks!!" - Kristen J-H from Morehead City, NC,  "H20 captain (Mark) is a fantastic captain. My husband and I had such a great experience and you couldn’t ask for a better day. H20 captain is patient, kind, and knows how to navigate all-around these waters. We also learned a lot about certain areas along the way including Cape Lookout and Shackleford Island. Thanks again for a perfect day!"

- David, Stephanie, and Oliver F. from Ohio wrote, "We had a great time! Thanks," on their excursion to see the wild horses on Shackleford (they saw 5 of them and collected some real nice shells!)

- Gail S. recommends H2O Captain, as seen on Facebook: "I was planning on a boat trip with my sister and her husband, unfortunately, hurricane Sally came through. the weather was pouring, cold and the ocean was wild. Captain H2O was understanding and refunded our money! such a kind and considerate man. I would recommend Captain H2O as he wants you to have a good time."

- Amy & family from Nebraska.  "We spent the afternoon with captain Mark from www.H2Ocaptain.com   and had an awesome time. He took us to Shackleford island where we saw wild horses and then we toured around the area in his boat. Can’t recommend this enough! Great time!!"

- Niki & family from North Carolina.  "Shelling and swimming and horses Oh My! Review of: BWB Repeat (Boat, Walk, Beach) Our favorite part of our trip was stepping over a sand dune and seeing some of the wild horses coming right towards us. Captain Mark had lots of information about Shackleford Island and the history of the horses. We had plenty of time to do some shelling, swimming, and horse watching. On the way back, Captain Mark took us on a little tour through the Beaufort Inlet and pointed out some great places to eat. Even though some rain showed up on the way back, it was a remarkable experience."

- Brandon & Melanie's family from Texas.  "This was absolutely the best experience! All due to Captain Mark. He is so wonderful. We brought our 6 and 8 year old and he was so amazing with them!!!! DEFINITELY 5 stars"

- Meredith & Family from Texas.  Another 5 Star Review!!!!!  "This was our first time doing an excursion like this in the Beaufort area and we would now count it as a "must-do" part of a vacation here. Our entire family loved it! The boat ride was a blast, we learned a lot of history, and the beach Captain Mark took us to was incredible! He even surprised our two children with extra beach toys and floats! The boat was very comfortable and we loved being able to have a flexible itinerary to work around how we wanted to spend our time. Captain Mark goes above and beyond and we look forward to going again!"

-  Milton & Amelia from North Carolina:  "Where do we begin? We had a fabulous day with Captain Mark! My wife and I love this area and are planning to purchase a boat next summer. We were looking for someone with expertise in boating to show us around and give us guidance navigating the area. We were more than pleased with Captain Mark. We had a blast! He showed us the most beautiful spots while teaching us the rules of the waterway and boat navigation. He is a real professional and went above and beyond to show us what we needed to do to get started with boating. We were even lucky enough to see wild horses and dolphins - 3 times! We highly recommend Captain Mark and we look forward to boating with him again!" -  Shirley from West Virginia:  "WOW Captain Mark.....really impressed with H20" -  Dave from North Carolina:  "The Captain was very informative about the island and the surrounding area. We felt very safe on the boat ride over and back from the island." -  Sarah from Kentucky:  "Thank you so much for the great trip yesterday!  It was a highlight for sure, and I think you even topped the pirate ship for the boys.  Thanks again for everything!!" -  Linda from Maryland:  "Captain Mark did an excellent job getting us to Shackleford. We did a short hike on a sandy path to the ocean side. Beautiful beach! We also ran into about 4 wild horses including a baby.  Cape lookout lighthouse was next. Again excellent ride over. Walked on the boardwalk out to the ocean. Pristine beach. Captain Mark was always making sure we were well taken care of and were having fun. Highly recommend!!"

Summer bucket list: 24 things to do in 2024 in the Wilmington area

h20 tours ocean isle

During the day, families clad in swimsuits will lug beach chairs, coolers, sand toys and towels to spend the days on our local beaches.

At night, they will take in the local sights, shop in boutiques and stores, and sample fare from our local restaurants.

Tourists will soon be among us, enjoying the best food, sites, and events the area has to offer. According to "The Economic Impact of Travel on North Carolina Counties,” a study prepared for Visit North Carolina by Tourism Economics, visitors spent more than $33.3 billion traveling to and within the state in 2022.

Domestic and international visitors spent more than $1.05 billion in New Hanover County in 2022, ranking it seventh out of North Carolinas 100 counties for visitor spending. Nearby Brunswick County exceeded New Hanover with nearly $1.09 billion, and Pender County bringing in $189.66 million.

But you don’t have to be a tourist to enjoy all the area has to offer. Here’s your bucket list of 24 things to do in the Wilmington area in the summer of 2024.

More: 10 things to know about tourism along North Carolina's coast

1. Soak up some sun

Slather on the sunscreen, grab your towel, and head to one of our many local beaches. In New Hanover County, Carolina, Kure and Wrightsville beaches offer sun, sand and surf. Brunswick County visitors can enjoy the beaches on Caswell Beach, Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle, Sunset Beach, and — if you don’t mind taking a ferry, Bald Head Island. In Pender County, you can build sandcastles and wade into the waves at Topsail Beach and Surf City.

2. Take a cruise

One of the best ways to see the area is by boat, and there are several guided water tours. Whether you’re in the mood for a sightseeing cruise, a sunset cruise, or a nature cruise, Cape Fear Riverboats and Wilmington Water Tours have you covered. Other boat tour operators include Island Time Water Tours at Carolina Beach, Southport Water Tours and Tour H20 in Southport, and Tiki Tours in Surf City.

3. Grab some pub grub

If you are craving something savory to go with your beer, Downtown Wilmington has a bit of everything. Get your nacho fix with the pulled chicken nachos at Front Street Brewery or visit the Copper Penny and try the Hot Roast Pork Sandwich and the 109 Chestnut Chicken — both sampled by Guy Fieri on his Food Network show, “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.”

4. Frolic at a festival

The Cape Fear region knows how to do festivals, and while you’ll find them in just about every month of the year, the summer is a great time to get festive. Perhaps the largest of the summer festivals is the N.C. 4 th of July Festival in Southport. The events are spread over several days, and the final day includes a parade and fireworks show. Also, check out the N.C. Blueberry Festival in Burgaw, held in June.

5. Cool out at a concert

Starting in May, there are a number of outdoor concerts in the Wilmington area. If you’re willing to travel, you could find one almost every night of the week. The concerts are often hosted by the area recreation departments, and musicians rotate, ensuring a variety of genres to suit any taste. Popular venues for outdoor concerts include Live Oak Bank Pavilion, Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, and Middleton Park on Oak Island.

Hidden gems: 9 spots off the beaten path for great entertainment in the Wilmington area

6. Explore your artsy side

Artists want to be where they’re surrounded by beauty, and that’s why so many of them call the Wilmington area home. Art in Bloom, Acme Art Studios, Bottega Art & Wine, New Elements and Parchies are just a few of the galleries in Wilmington. Stop in during the day or check them out after hours at Fourth Friday Gallery Nights. Southport also proves to be a haven for artists, with Ricky Evans Gallery, Franklin Square Gallery, Lantana’s Gallery and Fine Gifts, Artshak Studio and Gallery, and Artisans Gallery on Howe all located right downtown. For those who prefer to peruse paintings and pottery after hours, check out the First Friday Gallery Walk in Southport.

7. Muse in a museum

If you are looking for learning with a side of fun, be sure to check out the area’s museums. The Children’s Museum of Wilmington, located on Orange Street, is a great place offering hands-on, interactive learning. The Wilmington Railroad Museum is must for all train enthusiasts. If you enjoy art, check out the Cameron Art Museum, located on South 17th Street in Wilmington. If coastal culture is more your thing, the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Southport and the Museum of Coastal Carolina in Ocean Isle Beach can tell you about everything from shells to sea life and more.

8. Play a round

If you're a golf enthusiast, this is the place for you. The Wilmington area boasts some of the best golfing around. With 13 golf courses in New Hanover County, five in Pender County, and more than 30 in Brunswick County, you're sure to find a favorite. Some to check out are the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course, Beau Rivage Golf and Resort, Carolina National, the Thistle, the Pearl, and River Landing Golf Course located near the Pender and Duplin County line.

9. Get hip to local history

If you’re a history buff — and even if you’re not — we’ve got some places you need to visit. Fort Fisher State Historic Site in Kure Beach is a popular destination offering a look at the site of the Civil War’s largest Amphibious Battle and the remaining earthen fort. Spend a morning or afternoon visiting the grounds of Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson, located in Winnabow, which offers a look at a pre-Revolutionary War port, a Civil War-era fort, and the remains of St. Philip’s Anglican Church.

10. Learn local legends and lore

For those who like all things spooky, there are several ghost tours to try. The Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington and the Haunted Cotton Exchange Tour offer a look at Wilmington’s haunted locations. The Ghost Walk of Southport, offered by Old Southport Tour Company, takes you on a lantern-led tour of the city’s most haunted venues, offering a bit a history along the way. If walking's not your thing, you can take a horse-drawn carriage tour through downtown Wilmington or opt for one of several golf cart tours around Historic Downtown Southport.

11. Relax on the ferry

If you haven’t booked a water tour yet, try the next best thing: a ferry ride. The North Carolina Department of Transportation offers ferry service between Fort Fisher and Southport, and it’s a great way to see the area — and get a glimpse of some things only visible from the Cape Fear River. There’s also another ferry in the area, but this one isn’t operated by the state and runs between Southport and Bald Head Island. Either ride is sure to be scenic and enjoyable.

12. See a lighthouse

There is no better symbol of North Carolina’s coast than a lighthouse. While most people immediately think of Cape Hatteras, the black and white candy-cane striped beacon in Buxton, Brunswick County boasts three lighthouses — each unique in their own right. The Oak Island Lighthouse — which features a three-stripe color pattern of black, white, and gray — is the newest of the state’s lighthouses, and the area also is home to the oldest, Old Baldy on Bald Head Island. Both offer tours at various times throughout the summer. The third lighthouse, Price’s Creek, is located in Southport on private property along the Cape Fear River. It is not open for tours, but it is visible from the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry (as if you needed another reason to ride the ferry.)

13. Shop ‘til you drop

If you enjoy shopping, you’ll find a bit of everything in the Cape Fear Region. Independence Mall and Mayfaire offer several big name stores, as well as local boutiques. The Cotton Exchange and downtown Wilmington offer an array of boutiques suiting tastes from fabulous to fun to funky. Along the beaches and in downtown Southport, you’ll find several boutiques and unique local shops, and Shallotte also offers the Southport Crossing shopping center with big name retail shops.

14. Sample some spirits

If you want to get your drink on, there are plenty of places to do that. For a casual, laid-back setting by the water, Anne Bonney’s Bar and Grill in Wilmington, American Fish in Southport, and Sharky’s in Ocean Isle all fit the bill. If you’re looking for a brewery where you can find local craft beers, we have several. Here are a few to try: Ironclad Brewery, Edward Teach, Flytrap and Hi-Wire in Wilmington, Good Hops in Carolina Beach, Brunswick Beer and Cider in Leland, Solar Brewing and Lonerider in Oak Island.

15. Search for shells

Scouring the shoreline for the perfect shell can be fun and add that element of treasure hunting to your day at the beach. If you’re lucky, you might find an intact sand dollar, a whole conch shell, or an elusive Scotch Bonnet — North Carolina’s state shell. Stormy seas often reveal the greatest treasures, so many head to the beach as soon as a storm passes (just make sure it’s safe and no curfews are in effect). Holden Beach, Bald Head Island and Masonboro Island are all great places for shell seekers.

16. Paddle around

Whether you're paddling and duck diving through the waves on your surfboard, slicing through the calm waters in a kayak, or enjoying the best of both worlds on a stand-up paddleboard, paddling is a great way to spend the day. (The best part? You're getting a great work out, but you're having so much fun, you don't realize it until the next day.) If you don't have the equipment for any of these, there are plenty of places to rent boards, paddles, and kayaks. If swimming's more your speed, head for calm waters and dog paddle your way around.

17. Sample some seafood

The best thing about living next to the ocean is fresh seafood, and there are several places you can enjoy fresh, local seafood. At Seabird, diners can enjoy fresh, local seafood prepared by James Beard nominated chef Dean Neff , and Catch, which was recently one of 47 restaurants included in the 2024 USA TODAY Restaurants of the Year list , offers local seafood prepared by two-time James Beard nominee Keith Rhodes. Of course, if you’re looking for Calabash-style seafood, head to where it originated and enjoy fried fish, shrimp and scallops at any number of places.

Southern heritage, global flavors: This Wilmington restaurant made USA TODAY's best list

18. Be chef for a day (or just a meal)

Now, this takes number 17 on our list to the next -- and more advanced--level. In addition to fresh local seafood available in restaurants, there are also markets selling fresh catch right off the boat. Whether you're in the mood for crab, shrimp, fish or scallops, you can find it at our local seafood markets. (If oysters are your thing, come back this fall; remember you only eat oysters in months with an "r" in them.) Some local seafood markets to try are Eagle Island Fruit & Seafood in Wilmington, Mott's Channel Seafood in Wrightsville Beach, Lewis Seafood in Topsail Beach, Surf City Crab Seafood Market in Surf City, Potter's Seafood in Southport, Haag & Sons in Oak Island, High Rider Seafood in Varnamtown, and Old Ferry Seafood in Holden Beach.

20. Get perspective on a pier

Strolling along one of our local piers is a great way to see everything that happening along the beach while getting a bit of exercise. Some may charge a nominal fee for pier walkers, and those prices vary depending on the pier. Some piers to check out are Surf City Ocean Pier, Crystal Pier, Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier, Kure Beach Pier, Oak Island Pier, Ocean Crest Pier, and Ocean Isle Beach Pier. Along the Cape Fear River, there is the Southport City Pier, and the area also offers a number of river walks, including ones in Wilmington, Belville, and Shallotte. In addition to providing a nice stroll, piers are also popular with fishermen, which brings us to the next bucket list item...

19. Go fishing

While you will need to make sure you have the proper license before heading out, fishing can be a great way to spend the day. Many folks enjoy surf fishing, which can be done directly from the shore at most area beaches. Fishermen are asked to be cognizant of swimmers and walkers to ensure they don't get caught up in a line, and swimmers and walkers should also steer clear if they see rods and reels in the water to avoid being "caught."

21. Search for treasures

This time, we're not looking for shells. We're talking about things down in the sand, like coins, jewlery, Blackbeard's treasure (old-timers swear it's there), and other items. To find these, you'll need a metal detector. While you can buy these, there are also places that rent them, and many of those are online, so advance planning is needed. Also, be sure metal detecting is allowed in an area before you begin. Many historic sites, preserve, and federal area prohibit the use of metal detectors.

22. Picnic in a park

This time, we're taking a hike in the wilderness, although there may be walking trails. We are talking about places to sit, let the kids play, and enjoy a picnic. In New Hanover County, enjoy Greenfield Park, in Brunswick County, try Smithville District Park or Town Creek Park, and in Pender County try Millers Pond Park. Looking for something more rugged? Grab a backpack, some bug spray, and a water bottle and head to Abbey Nature Preserve, Ev-Henwood Nature Preserve, Brunswick Nature Park, or the Green Swamp Nature Preserve.

23. See the stars

Whether you’re looking for a romantic date night activity or a fun evening with the family, stargazing is a wonderful way to spend a summer evening. The beaches are the perfect spot to lie on a blanket and gaze at the heavens. Grab a blanket, a beverage, a telescope or some binoculars and spend an evening studying the skies. Whether you spot constellations, planets or witness a rare shooting star, it’s sure to be a peaceful evening. If you're looking for a more controlled environment, you can also see stars at Ingram Planetarium in Sunset Beach.

24. Watch the sunset

Chances are, you've seen a sunset. Maybe you were driving along and noticed some colors in the sky and thought, "Man, that's a pretty sunset." But that's not what I'm talking about; I mean really watching the sun as it sets. Here in the Wilmington area, that means heading to the beach and watching the sky change as the sun drops below the horizon. It almost looks as if the sun is dropping into the ocean. So, pack a picnic or your beverage of choice and head to the closest beach strand to see this marvel as it happens.

The challenge

Now, we've given you our summer bucket list. We hope you will get out of your comfort zone and try at least a few. If you want to be really adventurous, see how many you can mark off your list this summer. If you do them all, you are sure to be busy, and it just may be your best summer yet.
