Madhya Pradesh can be described as the best state of the nation when it comes to the diversity of its tourism destinations.Madhya Pradesh is known as the “Heart of India” because of a lot many things that it has to offer. It has been home to cultural and spiritual heritage of almost all the religions. Innumerable monuments, intricately carved temples, stupas, forts and palaces are dotted all over the State. The natural beauty of the state is equally varied. Consisting largely of a plateau, the State has everything, from mighty mountain ranges to meandering rivers to miles of verdant forests. In fact a large part of Madhya Pradesh is under the forest cover, offering a unique and exciting panorama of wildlife. In the National Parks of Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench you can spot the tiger, bison and a wide variety of deer and antelope.

Water sports, caravan journeys, river cruise, sound and light shows, tribal life, Madhya Pradesh has everything for every travel thirsty soul. Romance with nature in the Marble Rocks of Jabalpur in the moonlight or lose yourself in the legend of the poet prince Baz Bahadur and his beautiful consort Roopmati in Mandu. Follow the trails of Prince Rama in Chitrakoot. Let the hands of time which have rested lightly on the chhatris, palaces and forts of Orchha and Gwalior, whisper the tales of medieval India.

The temples of Khajuraho are India’s unique gift to the world, representing love and joys of life in a sublime expression. Madhya Pradesh is also a shopper’s paradise with beautiful Maheshwari and Chanderi textiles and bell metal craft of Bastar. The state is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites namely Sanchi, Bhimbetka and Khajuraho. But perhaps the best part about Madhya Pradesh is its accessibility. It is equally close to major tourist destinations from all over the country, being the 'Heart of India'.

10 Top Tourist Places in Madhya Pradesh

mp tourism who is who

Madhya Pradesh, in central India, draws visitors with well-preserved remnants of its compelling history. Its many abandoned cities provide an intriguing window to the past, so different from the congested India of today. In further contrast, the national parks of Madhya Pradesh offer some of India's best jungle lodges and wildlife spotting opportunities. Here are the top Madhya Pradesh tourist places.

Khajuraho Erotic Temples

The Khajuraho erotic temples are one of the top historical destinations in India . If you want proof that the Kama Sutra originated in India, Khajuraho is the place to visit. There are over 20 temples abounding in erotic sculptures. However, more than that, they show a celebration of love, life, and worship.

Bandhavgarh National Park

Shivang Mehta/Getty Images

Bandhavgarh and Kanha National Parks are among the top national parks in India . Bandhavgarh, while being relatively difficult to reach and costly to visit, is the best place to see tigers in the wild in India. The park features dense green valleys and rocky hill terrain, with an ancient fort. In addition to tigers, the park has a large array of wildlife including sloth bears, deer, leopards, jackals, and birds.

Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park has the honor of providing the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel, The Jungle Book . It’s rich in lush saal and bamboo forests, lakes, streams, and open grasslands. As well as tigers, the park abounds with barasingha (swamp deer) and an extensive variety of other animals and birds. Rather than offering one particular kind of animal, it provides an all-round nature experience. The park is well regarded for its research and conservation programs, and many endangered species have been saved there.

The great thing about Gwalior is that it's so accessible -- only two hours drive from Agra and the Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh. The main attraction the massive hilltop fort that towers over the city. Reputed to be one of the most invincible forts in India , its history stretches back over 1,000 years. Inside the fort walls are a number of palaces and temples, the highlight being the Man Mandir Palace. At the bottom of the fort is the Old Town of Gwalior, brimming with history and fine examples of Mughal architecture such as the Tomb of Tansen. The Tansen Music Festival is held at the tomb every December.

Orchha is located on the banks of the Betwa River, a comfortable hour and a half south of Gwalior. It's another relatively peaceful place, full of well-preserved palaces and temples, with a distinctly medieval charm. Three main palaces are enclosed in Orccha's fortified walls. The Jahangir Mahal is the largest and most impressive, and its upper levels offer some arresting panoramic views. A stay inside the Jahangir Mahal, at the Hotel Sheesh Mahal, completes the experience. Being a government-run hotel, it's not luxurious but it is full of character.

Madhya Pradesh's capital city, Bhopal, is perhaps best known for the tragic poisoning that occurred there in 1984 when a pesticide manufacturing plant leaked a mixture of deadly gases. The city has two main attractions -- mosques and museums. A particularly fascinating museum is the Tribal Museum, which showcases the tribes of the region and their lives. The Taj ul Masjid, Jama Masjid, and Moti Masjid are fine examples of the city's rich Islamic heritage. There are also two large lakes, the Upper Lake and Lower Lake, inside the city limits.

One of India's little-known UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Bhimbetka rock shelters, is situated about an hour from Bhopal inside Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary. There are more than ancient 700 rock shelters there, dating all the way back to the Paleolithic age. Many of them have paintings on the walls.

Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi Stupa, northeast of Bhopal, is one of India's oldest Buddhist monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by Emperor Ashoka in 262 BC after he embraced Buddhism and nonviolence, following his particularly horrific invasion of Kalinga (present-day Odisha). The complex is made up of a number of other stupas, temples, monasteries, pillars and relics. There's also an archeological museum. Sanchi can be visited on a day trip from Bhopal, but it's worth staying in the area as it's a convenient base for numerous other side trips.

Malwa Region Golden Triangle: Mandu, Ujjain, Omkareshwar

The Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh is situated in the southwest portion of the state), with Indore as the point of entry. Ujjain , Mandu and Omkareshwar popularly make up its "Golden Triangle". Ujjain is one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities, and one of the four locations of the Kumbh Mela . Most importantly, it's home to the  Mahakaleshwar Temple , which has one of India’s 12 sacred Jyotirlingams

The abandoned city of Mandu was once the lavish home of the Mughals, who indulged themselves by its many lakes and palaces. Mandu's crumbling buildings, encircled by a long 45 kilometer (28 miles) stretch of wall with 12 gateways, still hint of its grandiose past.

Omkareshwar, an island in the Narmada river, is said to appear like the symbol “Om” when viewed from above. It's another of the 12 Jyotirlingam sites, and this, added to the presence of the Holy Narmada, draws generations of devout pilgrims. It's popular with travelers too, as a place to chill out.

Maheshwar, the Varanasi of central India, is a small holy town dedicated to Lord Shiva. Set along the banks of the Narmada river, it's said that only Shiva is worshiped where the Narmada flows, as he's the only god with the inner peace to calm her.

Satpura National Park

Will Gray/Getty Images

You're unlikely to see a tiger at lesser-known Satpura National Park but it's an excellent place to spend time in nature without the crowds. Notably, Satpura is one of only a few protected forests in India that visitors are allowed to walk through. The Duchess Falls Trail is challenging but you'll be rewarded with a refreshing dip in the waterfall at the end. Other possible activities inside the park include cycling, jeep safaris, night safaris, and canoe safaris.

About Madhya Pradesh Tourism (MP)

Welcome to the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh, a state which exudes timelessness in every way. The exotic land is an intoxicating mixture of rich history, vibrant sights, awe inspiring art and shrines. From north to south, east to west, Madhya Pradesh is adorned with beautiful tourist attractions. On the state's rugged northern side, there are the famous temples of Khajuraho. Never before was sensuality and spirituality depicted as artistically as here. Two of India's most famous wildlife sanctuaries- Kanha and Bandhavgarh are embracing the state's area. Towards the southwest are the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi and 15th-century citadels of Mandu. Madhya Pradesh tourism offers you a wonderful mix of nature, heritage, wildlife and spirituality.

The state shares its borders with 6 states of India – Chhattisgarh towards south-east, south-west border touches "Maharashtra", western border touches "Gujarat", north-west border touches "Rajasthan", and north-east border touches "Uttar Pradesh".

India’s Tiger State!

Wildlife is a major part of Madhya Pradesh tourism. It is India’s “Tiger State'', with more than 526 tigers. Have you read the famous classic novel, The Jungle Book? The adventures of the little boy, Mowgli with Sher Khan and Bagheera, thrilled us as kids. It was the charm of Kanha and Pench National Parks that inspired Rudyard Kipling to write this book. Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh has the highest density of tiger population in India. Spotting a tiger here, or in the other wildlife parks, is quite easy. The other famous national parks in Madhya Pradesh are Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Panna National Park and Pench National Park. Some of the wildlife sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh are Bori, Bagdara, Phen, Ghatigaon, Ken Gharial and Pachmarhi.

Heritage dating back thousands of years!

The rich heritage of Madhya Pradesh can be seen in its palaces, forts, caves and monuments. There are five UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Madhya Pradesh. Amongst these is the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cave paintings in these rock shelters are believed to be more than 30,000 years old. No mention of top heritage sites is complete without mentioning Khajuraho. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site too. The temples, built between 950-1050 AD, represent spirituality, meditation and wrestling. Human sensuality is also depicted in the most artistic manner.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site is the Buddhist Group of Monuments at Sanchi. You can explore the monasteries, stupas and an Ashokan pillar. The two cities, Gwalior and Orchha, are UNESCO World Heritage Cities. Gwalior Fort, Bateshwar and Jai Vilas Palace are top tourist attractions of Gwalior. In Orchha, Ram Raja Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple and Laxmi Narayan Temple are some must visit heritage attractions. Some other popular heritage tourist attractions are located in Mandu, Burhanpur and Chanderi.

Numerous options for adventure too!

Options for adventure abound in Madhya Pradesh. Parasailing, river rafting, trekking, camping and mountain climbing are various adventure activities available. Mountaineering can be enjoyed in the Maikal Hills region from January-May & October-December. Mountaineering can be enjoyed from November to December & January to April at Lanjee Giri in Pachmarhi. ‘Ugly, characterless’: Poe warns impact of PUVMP, phasing out of iconic jeepneys to Philippine tourism

Senator Grace Poe on Sunday, May 5 warned that the supposed “modern” jeepneys the government is pushing under the public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program could bring undue damage to the Philippine’s tourism campaign considering the country’s iconic jeepney is famous around the world.

Poe pointed this out as she weighed in on the possible negative impact of the PUV Modernization Program (PUVMP) on the country’s tourism campaign should the government insists on phasing out Philippine jeepneys that’s been considered a cultural icon.

The senator lamented that while other countries are bent on preserving their own cultural trademarks, the government is hell-bent on absorbing and importing mini-buses from other countries to replace the country’s traditional public transport vehicles which it can help improve.

“Eh di ba sa Bangkok, andyan ‘yung ‘tuk tuk’; pumunta ka sa UK (United Kingdom) andyan yung double decker buses nila. So meron talagang karakter at value sa turismo kasi kakaiba nga eh. Yung mga jeep natin dito, talagang naging sikat (Bangkok as their own ‘tuktuk’, if you go to UK, they have have their double decker buses. Their transport vehicles really have character and value to tourism because of their uniqueness. Our own jeepneys also became popular because of it),” Poe said in an interview on Radio DZBB.

“Ang pangit di ba? Parang mga kahon na hindi maintindihan. .. pangit di ba? Kasi parang walang karakter. Walang kaluluwa yung mga designs (Aren’t they ugly? They look like boxes…they’re ugly, right? It looks character-less. Their design are soulless),” she lamented.

Poe said she could not understand why the government would rather patronize other countries’ transportation vehicles when it can help elevate local transportation and helpindustry stakeholders improve the appearance of traditional jeepneys.

“Iconic ang design ng ating jeep…pwedeng magkaroon ng tweak dun sa design ng jeep para maging mas ligtas at convenient (Our jeepneys have iconic designs… you can tweak the designs of these jeepneys to make it safer and more convenient for the public),” she pointed out.

“Pero andyan yung Sarao motors, Francisco motors.. andyan yung mga local manufacturers na hindi lang dapat buhayin, kung di dapat palakasin (But we have the Sara motors, Francisco motors.. we have local manufacturers that not only should we revive but that we should also strengthen),” added the lawmaker.

The government can also require local manufacturers in making jeepney designs that is “friendly” for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

“Kung gusto talaga nilang tulungan ang cultural development, pwede naman kumuha tayo ng mga artists…mahaba kasi ang kasaysayan ng mga yan…since World War 2 days pa (if we are really bent on cultural development, we can tap artists… our jeepneys have a long history…since World War 2 days),” she pointed out.

At the same time, the chairman of the Senate committee on public services also vowed to scrutinize the utilization of the P200-million fund supposedly for the livelihood assistance for drivers that would be affected by the jeepney modernization program.

“The consolidation deadline is not the end of the road for raising our concerns on the jeepney modernization . We will keep an eye on its implementation,” she said.

In the next Senate hearing, Poe urged the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to submit a comprehensive data on the status and revised timeline of the PUVMP and its components; updated statistics on consolidation of jeepneys; the number of routes being serviced, affected routes and contingency plans for these so as not to adversely impact commuters.

Poe also asked the DOTr to disclose its plan for the drivers who lost their livelihood and to shed more information on the status of the implementation of assistance programs for them such as the Entrepreneur and Tsuper Iskolar program.

Also, in order to quickly assist jeepney drivers and operators who did not join the program, Poe urged the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to set up help desks nationwide.

"Dapat magtayo ng mga help desks ang LTFRB sa mga lugar na maaabot nila para doon pwedeng mag-sign up ang ating mga tsuper kung anong pwedeng tulong mula sa gobyerno (The DOTr should set up help desks in places they can easily access, so our drivers can easily sign up from any of the government services),” she said.

"Kasi sa ngayon, parang merong disconnect o hindi pagkakaintindihan dahil nga hindi malinaw ang programa (Because as of now, there seems to be a disconnect, or miscommunication because of uncertainties in the PUVMP),” she added.

Canary Islands' tourism boss makes unexpected plea to Brit tourists as tensions rise

Brits are being urged not to cancel their holidays to the Canary islands despite a row over mass tourism, which has seen residents of the picturesque holiday hotspot take to the streets

Brits admit they're cancelling their trips to the Canary Islands

  • 12:33, 9 May 2024
  • Updated 12:40, 9 May 2024

Holidays could be thrown into chaos as the tourism debate in the Canary Islands continues, with some declaring "good riddance" to visitors.

Back in April, locals voiced concerns over the area's booming tourism trade, claiming the swathes of visitors were causing housing issues and polluting the islands. It led to graffiti messages such as "go home" being scrawled across walls, and some tourists were left feeling pretty uneasy.

Some locals have even taken to the streets to protest against the tourism industry and some Brits have even threatened to cancel their trips or not to book their yearly visit to the picturesque islands. But despite tension the regional tourism chief, Jessica de León, confirmed the Canary Islands are still open and hoping to attract business.

She told the Telegraph : "It is still safe to visit the Canary Islands, and we are delighted to welcome you." While she admitted there was frustration over the matter, she claimed it was "unfair to blame tourism."

The Canary Islands' president, Fernando Clavijo, added people were behaving in such a way that demonstrated "tourist-phobia". He said people who visit the area to enjoy a holiday and spend their money shouldn't be "criticised or insulted" as it could threaten the region's "main source of income."

The divided masses have taken to social media sites like Reddit to share their views. One who was devastated by the row said: "As a Brit who loves the Canary Islands, and sits planning how to retire there, I'm really sorry it's got to this. I'm holidaying in Greece this summer for the first time in 14 years. I'd normally be on one of your islands.

"I hope you get the reassurances and control you need without doing irreparable damage to your tourist industry."

Another wrote: "I went to La Palma two years ago, rented a car and really enjoyed it. I was considering Tenerife next, but I'm not as enthusiastic about it now, as I don't want to trouble the locals.

"I live near Bruges, so I can really see how overtourism can be a problem."

But some people were keen to point out the issues tourism presented, with some claiming many visitors aren't always respectful. One wrote: "If you think that it's the British tourists that made Spain or its people rich, you're totally delusional, and the impact of Brits in Spain is measured in more than just economic terms.

"What about the loss of community life, what about litter, noise, crowding the peaceful places?

"Brits are well known for being obnoxious, loud, getting drunk and causing havoc pretty much whether they find cheap alcohol. It's not a coincidence that over the last few years similar campaigns across Europe target Brits in particular, not just all tourists!

"Brits change every place they visit based on their taste. By and large they do not adapt to the local customs, they're reluctant to try the local foods, drinks etc. They'll still prefer English pub food and black tea which doesn't even come from England. Enjoy Blackpool!"

Another simply added: "Good riddance."

Others, however, were not so sure British visitors were the problem. They wrote: "Really? Me, wife and 3 kids go to Tenerife every year and I’ve yet to experience these 'louts' you talk of. In my experience the ones who are loud, aggressive and have zero respect for the island are from other countries.

"But sure, blame the English. Most English people who are looking for a party don’t go to Tenerife."

Khaire says everything he has achieved in politics, society is solely due to support of Thackeray

Exclusive | Lok Sabha elections 2024: 'Who am I without Thackeray and Shiv Sena?'

Chandrakant Khaire from Shiv Sena (UBT) Lok Sabha candidate. Pic/Nimesh Dave

When the undivided Shiv Sena was in charge, Aurangabad didn't have any communal riots. But in the last five years, there's been trouble, which affected businesses and made it hard to create new jobs. Chandrakant Khaire, who's running for Shiv Sena (UBT) in Aurangabad, criticised both AIMIM and Shiv Sena. He said people who left the party are called "Gaddar." Even though they have MLAs and MPs, the voters are still with us, he said in an interview with mid-day.

You've been an MP and MLA for 28 years, yet the struggle for water continues. I had a plan to bring in extra water from the Jayakwadi dam . However, in 2016, corporators from AIMIM and BJP opposed the project because they didn't want Shiv Sena to receive credit. It wasn't until MVA came into power that the project finally started. Originally budgeted at R792 crore, the project's cost has now surged to Rs 2,200 crores due to the delay. Nonetheless, work on the project is now underway.

What have you accomplished for the constituency in the past 20 years? I've greenlit numerous projects for the district, even during the Congress-led government. However, things took a turn after 2014. I faced challenges in getting support from the Union government. Only Union Minister Nitin Gadkari gave the green light to some proposals. While the Dhule-Solapur road project has been completed, the tunnel at Chalisgoan remains pending.

Aurangabad is renowned as an industrial hub, yet we're not seeing the arrival of new industries. Moreover, industrialists are feeling increasingly insecure? There are primarily two reasons for this. Firstly, during my 20-year tenure as MP, the district remained free from any riots. However, in the last five years, the city has witnessed unrest, making industrialists feel unsafe due to the current situation in the district. Additionally, the BJP's actions have led to the migration of industries from Maharashtra to Gujarat. In past elections, the Aurangabad campaigns have often revolved around communal issues. However, this time, you are making efforts to connect with Muslim voters.

The Muslim community has been impressed by the efforts of our party chief, Uddhav Thackeray, during the pandemic. Moreover, Thackeray has taken a stand against the National Register of Citizens, which resonates with the Muslim community. Additionally, Muslims are not satisfied with the current MP, prompting them to seek alternatives. They have been reaching out to us, expressing their support. Ultimately, people of all backgrounds seek jobs, safety, and a peaceful life with law and order. We have delivered on these fronts during our tenure, and people are turning to us for solutions.

In the 2019 election, you narrowly lost by just 4,500 votes. This time, you're up against the challenge of Shiv Sena. Do you believe this will impact your performance? Well, the citizens have observed what transpired over the past five years. The AIMIM MP hasn't made significant contributions to the constituency, leading voters to realise that AIMIM is essentially the B team of the BJP. As for Shiv Sena, it's not the real Shiv Sena we know—it's become a group associated with questionable practices. I'm aware that some MLAs and MPs have aligned themselves with them, often being labelled as contractors. However, despite these challenges, I'm confident in the support of the voters and citizens. I don't anticipate any significant vote division this time around, given that people have witnessed the situation unfold over the last five years. Even with attempts by our party chief, Uddhav Thackeray, to form alliances, such efforts haven't yielded the desired results. The recent decisions made by Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi might aid the BJP, but the people are well aware of these political dynamics. That's precisely why I'm receiving support from all communities.

In previous elections, you have consistently released a manifesto for the constituency. However, this year, you haven't published one. Why is that? This time around, I decided not to release a traditional manifesto. Instead, I'm actively engaging with the people directly, even after securing victory. I'm personally asking them about their needs and concerns, and their feedback serves as my manifesto. This approach marks a new pattern for this election. My strength lies in ensuring that projects are completed successfully. Additionally, I have strong connections in Delhi, including with senior officials, which greatly assists in implementing projects across the country.

The district boasts of heritage tourism potential, but it also faces its fair share of challenges. During my tenure, I initiated a two-phase project aimed at enhancing tourism in the district. Unfortunately, the third phase of this project was put on hold when I lost the election. However, following this upcoming election, I am committed to resuming and completing the third phase of tourism development in the district.

Are there any challenges associated with contesting the election under a new symbol? Not at all. Moreshwar Save, the first MP of the Shiv Sena in the constituency, won the election with the Mashal symbol. Our new symbol has already been effectively communicated to all voters. As a result, we are confident that we will not encounter any challenges in this regard.

Your party experienced a split, yet you remain aligned with Thackeray. Absolutely. Who am I without Thackeray and Shiv Sena? Everything I've achieved in politics and society is solely due to their support. The thought of distancing myself from Thackeray and the party is inconceivable to me. They have remained steadfast, even when others left for personal gain.

Federal government partners with Indigenous Peoples in Timiskaming District

From: Infrastructure Canada

News release

The federal government is investing in green and inclusive retrofits for Indigenous education facilities in Kirkland Lake and Temiskaming Shores to convert land in Kirkland Lake into a food forest. Announced by MP Anthony Rota and Bertha Cormier, Executive Director of the Temiskaming Native Women’s Support Group (TNWSG), these projects will receive almost $6 million from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program and $250,000 from the Natural Infrastructure Fund.

Kirkland Lake , Ontario, May 8, 2024 — The federal government is investing in green and inclusive retrofits for Indigenous education facilities in Kirkland Lake and Temiskaming Shores to convert land in Kirkland Lake into a food forest.

To help make the Keepers of the Circle Indigenous Hubs in Kirkland Lake and Temiskaming Shores more energy efficient, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve air quality, they will get new HVAC systems, lighting, roofs, doors, and windows. Also, accessibility ramps will be repaved, and a navigation application will be available for mobile devices so users can get information on how to get around the building based on their mobility needs. Both hubs are also being expanded, creating the Resiliency Centre in Kirkland Lake and Community Gathering Space in Temiskaming Shores.

In Kirkland Lake, when the food forest is complete, the Indigenous community will have a place to gather for seasonal ceremonies and community-wide celebrations. It will also be an outdoor learning site for people to learn about Indigenous land use and vegetation.

The TNWSG is a non-profit organization, established in 1997 to support the social, economic and cultural equity of Indigenous women. It serves the community across Timiskaming District, providing services such as early childhood learning, childcare and family support, cultural activities, and skills development training – with a focus on Indigenous women and girls’ leadership and economic security.

“This is great news for Timiskaming District. Green and inclusive improvements to Indigenous Hubs offering multigenerational gatherings, healthcare services, childcare, and skills development training will provide needed space to grow programs and services in Kirkland Lake and Temiskaming Shores. Natural infrastructure improvements to land in Kirkland Lake will give the Indigenous community in the region a place to gather for ceremonies, celebrations, and outdoor learning on Indigenous land use practices, while also providing food resources for the community.” Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing—Timiskaming, Ontario on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities
“We are looking forward to these upcoming projects that will support northern Indigenous communities. As we move towards a more sustainable future, Keepers of the Circle is embracing new ways to further our participation in the green economy, including through our buildings. We are excited to create a new Indigenous-led and designed outdoor green space in Kirkland Lake that provides more opportunities for community members to connect with the land and their culture.” Bertha Cormier, Executive Director of the Temiskaming Native Women's Support Group

Quick facts

The federal government is investing $5,733,419 in these projects through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program, and $250,000 through the Natural Infrastructure Fund (NIF).

The improvements are expected to reduce the Kirkland Lake facility’s energy consumption by 108% and greenhouse gas emissions by 45.40 tonnes annually.

These improvements are expected to reduce the Temiskaming Shores’ facility’s energy consumption by 105% and greenhouse gas emissions by 31.9 tonnes annually.

The GICB program was created in support of Canada’s Strengthened Climate Plan: A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy. It is supporting the Plan’s first pillar by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and helping develop higher resilience to climate change.

The program is providing $1.5 billion over five years towards green and accessible retrofits, repairs or upgrades.

The application period for the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program is now closed.

The Natural Infrastructure Fund supports projects that use natural or hybrid approaches to increase resilience to climate change, mitigate carbon emissions, protect and preserve biodiversity and wildlife habitats, and promote Canadians’ access to nature.

Examples of natural infrastructure include urban forests, street trees, wetlands, living dykes, bioswales, and naturalized coastal restoration.

Hybrid infrastructure incorporates elements of engineered grey infrastructure to enhance or support natural infrastructure and/or the use of ecosystem processes.

A minimum of 10% of the overall funding for GICB and NIF will be allocated to Indigenous-led projects.

Allan responds to criticism Catholic schools missed out on $400 vouchers in budget

A key sweetener of the Victorian budget was $400 vouchers for students in government schools, but it has led to criticism given the program is not means-tested – and Catholic and other faith schools miss out.

Asked if wealthy parents should give money back to their school, Jacinta Allan said that she would be:

That’s ultimately a decision for every individual family. If I can give my own experience, I’m proud to send my kids to a great local government primary school and I’ll have a chat to the principal and say, our allocation can be be provided directly to the school because there’s a bunch of programs [that] our school provides. I’m sure that funding will be welcomed.

Circling back to Victorian premier Jacinta Allan’s press conference

On the decision to delay the expansion of the free kinder program – a key election promise – Jacinta Allan said workforce shortages are to blame.

She has been taking questions on yesterday’s state budget, and said:

We know that there’s workforce shortages and pricing pressures on businesses and workforces around the globe, and we have to recognise that we can’t stubbornly push on and wish it was different . We had to make a decision. We’re continuing our massive expansion of four-year-old kinder – it’s already happening in regional Victoria [and] is already happening in many parts of metropolitan Melbourne. We’ve just had to take a more gradual rollout as we achieve a full 30 hours of four-year-old kinder in the years ahead because we need to be able to train and scale up the workforce, which is why we’re spending more than $350m on early childhood workforce initiatives.

Linda Reynolds and Brittany Higgins to return to mediation this month

Amanda Meade

Linda Reynolds and Brittany Higgins will return to mediation on 21 May, according to a listing in Western Australia’s supreme court.

No details about whether the hearing is in person or online were available but a strategic conference is set down for Friday 24 May.

Reynolds, the former defence minister, is suing Higgins and her fiance, David Sharaz , over a series of social media posts she says damaged her reputation.

Higgins’s application to vacate the trial listed for six weeks in late July was turned down.

Last week Sharaz threw in the towel in his defamation battle against Reynolds, tweeting he would no longer fight the case.

Will Victorians ever see the Melbourne airport train line built?

In yesterday’s Victorian budget the government said the project was at least four years delayed, due to an ongoing dispute with the airport’s operators.

Taking questions from reporters this morning, the premier, Jacinta Allan , said:

We’ve been really clear that we want to deliver these projects in the most efficient way in terms of time and value for money. I think that’s fair enough. The airport’s not putting a cent towards this project, not one single cent and [are making] demands on the state and federal governments that have been quite unreasonable.

Victorian premier spruiks breakfast program included in state budget

The Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan , is at a primary school in Melbourne’s inner north spruiking the government’s breakfast program, funded in yesterday’s state budget.

She says $21.1m will help expand the program – which provides healthy breakfast for students as well as lunches, snacks and take-home food packs for students experiencing disadvantage – to every government school by 2025.

Allan says it’s a budget measure focused on “supporting families”:

It’s a recognition that families across the state right now are doing it tough. The cost-of-living pressures are real and it’s adding to the cost of everything, and we know that if we can provide practical support, primarily based in a school setting, we can make a real difference to students and their ability to learn and make the most of their time at school and a real difference to support parents and families as well.

But we’re expecting most questions today to be focused on several election commitments that have either been scrapped or delayed in the budget.

‘Pretty sad day’ when local government bans books, says NSW minister

The NSW health minister has said it’s a “pretty sad day” when local governments are concerned about banning books rather than concentrating on core issues such as roads and rates.

Ryan Park was on ABC Sydney this morning, responding to news that Cumberland city council had voted to place a blanket ban on same-sex parenting books at local libraries. You can read the full story on this below:

Speaking on the radio earlier today, Park said:

I think it’s a pretty sad day when local government is worried about banning books. I think the community and ratepayers out there would want them to concentrate on roads, rates and rubbish and making sure their local parks are clean, tidy and well kept. That’s what I expect of my local council. From my years of dealing with the local council, I think those who focus on those sort of core issues tend to be doing well by the community.

Queensland government accepts recommendation for caps on K’gari tourism

Andrew Messenger

The number of tourists on K’gari national park could soon be capped on the busiest days of the year, amid a wave of dingo attacks.

The Queensland government endorsed “in principle” a recommendation from a 2022 study that it regulate the number of vehicles that can book the boat to the island on the 20 busiest days of the year.

The idea “is undergoing practical evaluation and consideration”, the government said. It would be included in the development of a new camping booking system.

But the department of the environment rejected recommendations to introduce fishing licences to better understand the number of fishers and a levy on visitors to commercial and private premises. It said it has implemented a crackdown on permit holders to make sure they’re following the rules. It has also hired 24 additional park rangers.

The environment minister, Leanne Linard , said campers spent more than 337,000 nights on K’gari in 2023, a number that is increasing:

The study will help the Queensland parks and wildlife service develop a new draft management plan for K’gari to help balance visitor experience and protect the area’s natural and cultural values.

A dingo on K’gari national park.

Previously known as Fraser Island, the huge sand island has the world’s best preserved dingo colonies. Several of the animals have been killed in recent months, after high-profile attacks on visitors. Rangers and the Butchulla people, who hold native title over the island, blame the sheer number of tourists on the island, and their bad behaviour, for the issue.

Retail union backs proposal for compressed work week for Woolworths employees

Woolworths employees are one step closer to flexible working arrangements with the retail union backing a new proposal.

As reported in The Australian , delegates from the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) have backed a proposal for a compressed work week as part of the new Woolworths enterprise agreement.

The enterprise agreement is one of the biggest in the country, covering about 130,000 workers.

Under the proposal – which remains subject to a vote of employees in coming weeks – workers would be able to complete their 38-hour, five-day working week over four days, by working four 9.5-hour shifts.

The SDA NSW secretary, Bernie Smith , is reported as saying workers would need to complete up to four weekend shifts over a four-week period as part of the arrangement:

That could be one weekend shift per week ie a Saturday or a Sunday, or it could be two weekends working Saturday and Sunday, and two weekends off. This is a common retail roster.

Support for a four-day work week has grown rapidly over the past few years. For more on this, you can read this fantastic piece from Celina Ribeiro :

More details on Australia’s sanctions on alleged Russian leader of ransomware group

As we flagged earlier , Australia has imposed a targeted financial sanction and travel ban on the Russian citizen Dmitry Khoroshev for his alleged senior leadership role in the LockBit ransomware group. You can read all the details on this below:

The Australian federal police published more details on the matter this morning. In a statement it acknowledged this is the second use of Australia’s thematic autonomous cyber sanctions framework, after sanctioning Russian man Alexander Ermakov in October for his role in the cyber-attack on Medibank .

The AFP is working with state and territory police to work through the 119 reports of crime involving Australian businesses and individuals who were targeted by LockBit. In many cases, Australian victims had their data exfiltrated, encrypted, or both, severely impacting business and individuals. The AFP is working closely with Australian LockBit victims and is assisting overseas law enforcement to help continue building a global case against the ransomware group.

Dmitry Khoroshev, alleged leader of the LockBit Russian cybercrime gang

The AFP acting assistant commissioner Chris Goldsmid said by taking away Khoroshev’s anonymity, it has “severely undermined [his] credibility with cybercriminals and also signals any dealings they have with him could be subject to law enforcement action”.

In Australia, we have a range of evidence and information to work through, including IP addresses, tools and software deployed on Australian-owned systems, plus the infrastructure and communication used by cybercriminals.

Palaszczuk appointed international ambassador for Smart Energy Council

The former Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will become an international ambassador for the Smart Energy Council , the Courier Mail is reporting .

The official announcement will reportedly be made today, with Palaszczuk’s first project to be leading the council’s delegation to China on 10 June.

Palaszczuk announced her retirement from politics last December, stating she had “given my all” and “now is the time for me to leave”. She had served in the Queensland parliament for 18 years.

The Smart Energy Council is the independent body for Australian’s smart energy industry, focused on the transition to net zero carbon emissions.

The Courier Mail reports that Palaszczuk is not expected to have any formal engagement with the Queensland government in her role.
