Shot out to Alexis for excellent customer service! Coffee served with a smile and genuine friendliness. I'll be back again for sure when I forget to get my Starbucks run before heading to the park. Never a long line. Fresh brewed coffee and available on ice just not blended because they don't have the capability.

safari outpost reviews

This coffee shop is right next to the carousel, so we always grab an iced latte and iced coffee when we enter the park. The coffee and espresso is surprisingly good, and customer service has always been great. I'm okay with waiting as there are usually only one or two people working there. Just note for iced drinks they no longer have lids or straws (not an issue, we just bring our own tumblers when going to the zoo/safari park anyway).

Photo of Marcus F.

Great idea to place a coffee cart right after you walk into the park. Grab coffee when you enter then grab one for the long drive home. Though there's always a long line, even during the sweltering summer months, it moves quickly. Tip - Hot chocolate for the kids! Tastes just like Swiss Miss.

Snacks!

I did not have a good expierience with Mariah. we were very early and needed to get coffee. I didn't have a chance to show her my card and was charge immediately and when I asked her if she put my discount she got irritated and she told me si had to wait 5-10 minutes to have her manager come in and do so. I didn't like the tone of her voice I felt like I was not treated right. she brings a bad vibes.

Photo of Sylvia H.

Expecting the prices to be a huge ripoff like the typical amusement park, I was surprised that an iced coffee was only $4. That's pretty standard outside the park. And the iced coffee itself was also standard. Good for a warm day. The only thing is that there are no straws or lids available for the safety of the animals. The lid thing seems a bit odd because they do offer lids for the hot drinks just not for the cold.

My trips to the Wild Animal Park usually commence before 10 am. The Safari Coffee outpost, located in the "Safari Base Camp" perks me up for the day. Unlike most theme park concessions, the prices are reasonable! So bring on the caffeine and enjoy the morning with a piping hot cup of joe.

They need a Starbucks. 30 mins in line w/ only 4 people ahead of us. Super inefficient and the coffee was mediocre coffee. Such a bummer

The double express was good. The worker was really nice. It's a really basic coffee cart towards the front entrance

The Wilds offer a variety of excursions that are certain to create lasting memories for the whole family. Whether it’s a first-time visitor or returning guest, there are lots to see and do at this safari park and conservation center.

Cutting-edge conservation science and education programs provide hands-on experiences. Established in 1984, The Wilds resides on nearly 10,000 acres of reclaimed surface mining land. Today, it is home to more than 30 rare and endangered species from around the globe. The animals are provided wide, open pastures to roam, coexist, and amaze the guests. Over the past several months, The Wilds has welcomed five Sichuan takin kids, three white rhinoceros calves, nine Père David’s deer fawns, and three scimitar-horned oryx calves. These offspring are as exciting for conservationists as they are adorable for all animal lovers.

Visitors can choose to ride in a pick-up truck to feed giraffes or meet a rhino on a Wildside Tour or feel the breeze on an Open-Air Safari tour while snapping breathtaking photos.

Some of The Wilds’ newest and exciting experiences include the Secrets of the Zoo Wildside Tour and WildNights at the Outpost experience. During the Secrets of the Zoo Wildside Tour, guests will enjoy a special variation of a Wildside Tour led by one of The Wilds’ Animal Management team members, who appear on the hit Nat Geo WILD TV series, Secrets of the Zoo. Guests who opt for a WildNights at the Outpost experience will spend the night in the middle of The Wilds’ pastures with rhinos and other rare and incredible species nearby. From lounging around the fire pit, relaxing on covered decks, and exploring vast, breathtaking views, this once-in-a-lifetime experience includes a pre-packaged cooler complete with camping groceries.

Adventure-seeking guests can also opt to soar over animal pastures on a Zipline Safari tour, enjoy a relaxing Fishing Safari tour on one of nearly 100 lakes at The Wilds, or saddle up on a Horseback Safari tour through the quiet prairies.

To round out a perfect day, from June until September, The Wilds will offer additional tours at sunset:

  • The  Sunset Safari Tour  is a magical tour with picturesque views. The tour includes an Open-Air Safari tour for viewing the animals when the pastures are bathing in the late evening sun.
  • For guests looking to get closer to the action, the  Sunset Wildside tour  is a great option. This awe-inspiring tour takes guests off the beaten path and out into the pastures, and also includes a lovely dinner.
  • The  Sunset Horseback Safari  begins with dinner followed by approximately two hours of riding through grasslands and hillsides, as well as our butterfly habitat.
  • For thrill-seeking guests, booking a  Sunset Zipline Safari tour  is the way to go. Guests will gear up when the sun goes down on this breathtaking view of The Wilds above the animal pastures.

Guests are encouraged to sign-up for a membership to The Wilds to enjoy the wonderful perks that come with it. Membership includes free Open-Air Safari tours from May through October, discounts on premium safari experiences, free parking, member benefits for Nomad Ridge, The Lodge, and The Wilds’ Cabins at Straker Lake, a subscription to The Wilds’ digital member magazine, discounts at The Wilds’ Gift Market and Overlook Café and more. Members of The Wilds also receive a 50% discount on regular-priced Columbus Zoo and Aquarium tickets.

A trip to The Wilds can also be extended by booking a getaway and staying at one of the park’s overnight accommodations. Nomad Ridge is an adults-only getaway that includes a furnished private yurt overlooking animal pastures. For groups of up to 12 people, The Lodge is the perfect “home away from home,” as guests will stay in a private luxury cabin tucked away next to one of The Wilds’ most scenic lakes. Looking for a great place to stay for the whole family? The Wilds’ Cabins at Straker Lake offers accommodations for up to six guests with comfortable living areas and kitchens. These overnight accommodations are perfect for vacations, corporate retreats, and honeymoons, too.

The Wilds: Ohio’s Only Wildlife Safari

Early morning View The Wilds

The Wilds: Ohio’s Stateside Safari

By Mary Lee Blackwell

My sister, Kimberly, and I were driving from New England to Louisville, Kentucky to help her son move. Driving through Ohio on Highway 71 we saw a brown sign– the type that indicates a state or national park, or other visit-worthy sites— in Ohio that read “The Wilds.”

African painted dog

“Whoa, listen to this. It’s a ten-thousand-acre wildlife preserve in Cumberland,” I read, “And you can stay overnight in a yurt!”

I realize that to some people this is not an exciting revelation, but for us, it was cause for hysteria.

We called immediately and booked a yurt for a night on our return trip.

Nomad Ridge

Several days later we were driving up the dirt road in The Wilds following signs for Nomad Ridge.

Tucked beneath a wreath of wisteria was the first of a dozen or so yurts on the property. It was the reception area.

We were greeted kindly, checked in, and were escorted down a serpentine of steps to our own yurt complete with a deck overlooking expansive rolling hills and a pair of ponds.

Nestled on a hillside in a grove of deciduous trees it felt like a treehouse. As soon as our host left, we looked at each other and said, “Ok, this is too cool… we have to stay a second night.”

The Wilds Safari Bus Tour

Included in our stay were a safari tour as well as dinner and breakfast for two. We put our things away quickly and walked to the more public side of the park for our tour.

Once loaded up, we started with a drive through the Sally-port gate system – think Jurassic Park in our open-sided bus.

deer with antlers

We quickly encountered a herd of burping, grunting Pere Armande David’s deer. The males cover their antlers with as much algae, debris, mud, grass, and dirt as they can, and together with the belching, an ‘irresistible’ cologne is created for their mating ritual.

Nomad Ridge Dining Space Grahm S Jones Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

A fine and appealing scent for some it seems. This herd is a direct descendant of the Chinese Emperor. During the Boxer Rebellion, the emperor’s deer were wiped out as soldiers pilfered from his royal forest to feed themselves.

The only reason the deer survive today is that, prior to the rebellion, a Frenchman named Armande David had asked the emperor if he could bring some of his deer back to Europe with him.

The herd of two hundred that the emperor gave Pere David is the direct ancestor to those at The Wilds today.

Tree house View from our Yurt at The Wilds

As we listened and learned Kimberly and I couldn’t help but wonder how it was that we had never heard of this ‘state-side Safari’ before.

The seed of this idea sprouted in the late 1970s when politicians, the Ohio Department of Natural Resource and Development, the Ohio zoos (there are nearly a half a dozen) and the private sector explored concepts for supporting cultural tourism through the preservation of wildlife.

A Myriad of Animals

Our safari bus brought us up close and personal with ghosts of the desert (Persian Onagers) and Southern White Rhinos, Grevy’s Zebras and Bactrian Camels. There are as many as fifty species roaming free.

At the time of our visit, eleven of them are endangered; their risk of extinction is high.

Many species have become extinct in the wild, but here they work collaboratively with zoos to breed or artificially inseminate those endangered to replenish the numbers.

Their success is admirable. Some, like Przewalski’s Wild Horses, have already been reintroduced into the wild.

Conserving Carnivores at The Wilds

We continued through more Sally-port gates and on to the Carnivore Conservation Center. It is good to know that the seven miles of fence-line are walked and inspected once a week. Cheetahs, a Dhole, and African Painted Dogs are misleading in their appearance looking downright approachable.

Sothern White Rhino

The African Painted Dog, we were told, is extremely aggressive and an incredible relay hunter. Their hunting success rate for prey ten times their own body weight is eighty to ninety percent.

On the flip side, they bring back their kills and feed the young, injured, old and ill before partaking themselves. Such a civilized social structure.

In all the tour took about two and a half hours. Ostrich pecked at the sides of the bus, a Red-Crowned Crane tended to its egg, rhinos wallowed in mud, and contented Eland and Antelope grazed.

As guests of Nomad Ridge, we received a significant discount on other tours; zipline, horseback, fishing, sunset, or Wildside.

We just could not pass up the opportunity to get even closer to the animals and potentially feed some of them on the Wildside tour.

We were giddy and oozing with excitement from both what we’d seen and what we had to look forward to the following day.

wilds view from yurt

We listened from our treehouse deck to the sounds of animals and night falling. But for a few other guests, the park was empty.

The intimacy with the park after hours from our private abode was spellbinding.

We continued to wonder how we hadn’t known about this place, about our good fortune in stumbling across it and how soon we could return.

A place of this magnitude with this degree of thoughtful planning takes time and, though the idea sprang up in the 70s, it didn’t open until 1994.

Coal Company Land Donation

In 1984 the Central Ohio Coal Company, a subsidiary of American Electric Power, donated over nine thousand acres to the then newly designated 501(c)(3) organization; the International Center for the Preservation of Wild Animals, Inc.

The land had been surface mined for decades. The 1971 Federal Reclamation Act required mining outfits to replace a minimum of six to eight inches of topsoil, re-contour, and control erosion which explains why undulating hills and ponds grace the land today.

We awoke to fog lifting through the hills and trees and grasses, Pere David’s deer below us stirring by the pond.

At 8 a.m. we climbed aboard our Wildside jeep along with a half dozen other eager guests and passed through the Sally-port gates.

We met the little-studied Sichuan Takin who had stumped the animal management staff on their arrival. After the Takin’s first night in their lakeside enclosure, the staff was unable to locate them.

They found them later, on the other side of the pond; it was not known at the time that Takin could swim.

Feeding the Giraffe

We drove through a field, passed the zebras and antelope. Lingered by the rhinos as they investigated the jeep. They were close enough to touch. I desperately wanted to but was advised against it. Pff.

Przelewski Wild Horses 2

A little further on a reticulated giraffe sauntered up to the side of the jeep. Our guide handed each of us a few leaves of romaine lettuce.

The giraffe bent his head down into the jeep, extended his rough, black tongue, and wrapped it gently around the lettuce in my hand. Incredible.

We continued feeding and being awed by the giraffes for twenty minutes or so. They are fantastic, comedic, and gentle creatures.

We did one more open safari the following morning — each night we stayed included the same; meals and a tour.

There is always more to learn; each guide imparts his or her own bits and pieces, so no tour is ever the same. And the free-roaming animals are always up to something different.

The mission of The Wilds is to foster an appreciation for and mindfulness of nature, wildlife, and the ecology, and to advance its conservation through good stewardship. Inspiration for such abounds at every turn.

Sipping an Ohio Chardonnay which we purchased at the concierge desk, we sat on our deck overlooking thousands of acres. We watched as Pere David’s deer, silhouetted against the pinkening sky, socialized, and swam, drank, and grazed and belched.

“I am so happy right now,” I said.

“Mmm-hmmm,” Kimberly agreed.

The Outpost Lodge, Kruger National Park

By Author Hal Brindley

Posted on Published: August 3, 2012  - Last updated: June 8, 2023

The Outpost Lodge, Kruger National Park, is a socially responsible lodge in South Africa, which was conceived to benefit the local people of Makuleke Community, but more on that later. First of all …

How Did People Like Us End Up in a Luxury Lodge?

Years ago, I was photographing hippos near a waterhole when a leopard dashed out of the bush and snatched a crocodile from the water ( see video clip ). It was only my fourth day in Kruger and I had already witnessed something that nobody had ever documented in all of human history. I would be forever hooked on Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Kruger is one of the premier wildlife-watching destinations on the planet. Leopard attacking crocodile in Kruger.

There’s no denying that Kruger is one of the premier wildlife-watching destinations on the planet. The diversity of large mammal species is astounding and the size of the park is staggering. Yet, even in a place so spacious, the crowds of human spectators can occasionally become overwhelming, especially in the easily-accessed southern end of the park. That’s why Cristina and I were really looking forward to making the long journey to the northern tip.  Our opportunity came when I entered a competition in South Africa’s Getaway Magazine, calling for essays of amazing Kruger encounters to be used in an upcoming book entitled Kruger Tales .

My leopard vs. crocodile story took first place, and the prize was a two-night stay for two people in a luxury resort in north Kruger: The Outpost Lodge. This was the excuse we needed to plan our next trip to Africa and Kruger became our first destination. A few months later, we flew to Johannesburg, rented a car, and drove five hours to the park. After seven nights of camping and slowly making our way from south to north, we arrived at the top of a long gravel drive through the wilderness and found ourselves in the lap of luxury.

60 Second Review video: The Outpost in South Africa

The Outpost Lodge is in the north area of Kruger, just a 12min drive from Pafuri gate, and about 40min from the famous Crooks Corner and not far from the central regions of the park.

Amazing Suites, Amazing Design

I must admit, I felt like a bit of an impostor pulling up to The Outpost. We had never stayed in a luxury lodge and, after a week of camping, must have looked like a couple of ragged homeless folks who had snuck in through a hole in the back wall. But we were warmly greeted by three smiling employees including the manager. She led us to the bar where our jaws instantly dropped upon seeing the amazing view.

The Outpost Lodge is perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Luvuvhu River (it joins the Limpopo river in the fever tree forests area). From up here, the extensive views of the rolling African sandveld sprinkled with baobabs and acacia trees appears to stretch to the ends of the earth. You can see large herds of elephant from your own room. Once we had tucked our chins back in we were handed an iced tea in a cocktail glass. I could get used to this.

The view from our room at the Outpost Lodge

The entire common area is open to the air on three sides, providing stunning views and cooling breezes. The roof, high above, covers a dining area with elegant tables, a modest but modern bar, and a comfortable sitting area populated with cozy chairs and a fireplace. To the right, backed by attractive stone walls, stretches a huge multi-level outdoor terrace housing a clear blue swimming pool and outdoor lounging beds scattered amongst artfully spaced acacia trees.

We loved this open plan design. From the pool you can see the bar and restaurant area.

The beautifully designed pool, sitting area, bar, and dining area at the Outpost.

After a quick tour of the common area, the manager led us down a long boardwalk that seemed to disappear into the wilderness. We soon realized this was the path to the “rooms”. Each one is a separate building raised on stilts overlooking the valley.

Each room at The Outpost is a separate unit on stilts overlooking the river.

But what truly makes the Outpost such an incredible place to stay is the design of these units. Clean lines,  contemporary architecture with clever use of concrete. The suites are one open space and completely open on three sides. You can lie in bed and watch an unobstructed panoramic view of the sun rising over the valley and the beautiful surrounds of the lodge. And more amazing still, you can take a bath in the tub which is perched at the edge of the railing, watching the elephants and buffalo strolling by in the plains below. It felt like we were staying at a honeymoon suite.

I can confidently rate The Outpost as my number one favorite bathtub in the world. For those moments when you feel like you need a little more privacy, or want to keep the mosquitoes out, you can close the remote-controlled screens from your comfortable reclining sofa.

The interior of our room with the electric blinds closed.

Great Food, More Great Food, and Even More Great Food

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in your stay, mainly because there is nowhere else to eat within a hundred miles. You’ll be very glad about that, because the food here is top notch and plentiful. It took us a few meals before we realized we couldn’t eat all the food they offered us, due to the generous portions and multiple courses, even though we very much wanted to devour every bite.

The restaurant is in the central lodge area, off the main building,  also with open sides, so you feel like you are always eating outside.

One of the many gourmet meals we were served at the Outpost Lodge.

Wildlife, Game Drives and Sundowners

Of course you could just relax at the swimming pool, drool over the view, and eat yourself silly all day, but you’d be missing the main attraction: the wildlife. Every early morning and every late afternoon, the guests are taken on a guided game drive on open safari vehicles around the northern end of Kruger. This is the perfect time to get to know the mopane woodlands, the fever tree forests, and the magic of Kruger park.

Our guide clearly enjoyed his job. His enthusiasm for the land and for the wildlife was obvious and, though on occasion he drove maniacally fast, he did deliver us a few great sightings.

Dashing down a back road in Kruger on a guided night drive.

As the sun began to set, Joey arrived in the magical fever-tree forest, stopped his rover, and set up a lovely mini-bar in the wilderness. Snacking on biltong and hors d’oeuvres while sipping an import beer, we watched the baboons cavort in the trees while the sun slowly sank through the army of pale green trunks.

We all were keen to spot a leopard as Joey said that he sees them at least once a week in the area. However, we were more than happy to settle for a pair of male lions resting under the full moon, a hunting lioness (a member of one resident prides of lion), a rare Pel’s Fishing Owl watching the river, and my personal favorites: a smattering of small mammals that I rarely get a chance to see including large-spotted genets, a civet, lesser and greater bushbabies, and even several four-toed elephant shrews!

Some of my favorite sightings from our night drive: genet, pel's fishing owl, baby zebra, and civet

Northern Kruger does not generally have the high concentrations of wildlife that are found in the southern end, but with a little more work you can certainly see nearly all of your dream African animals. This is an area that specially delights birders. There are over 450 bird species in Kruger and the north is very productive. And if you like to feel a sense of solitude in the wilderness, heading to the top of Kruger may well be worth your trek.

Another wildlife surprise was readily visible right on the Outpost grounds. There is a colony of Bush Hyrax living in the trees along the boardwalk and you can see them each day scampering around and sunning on the rocks just meters away. Though I had seen Rock Hyrax in many places around southern Africa, this was my first time ever seeing the Bush Hyrax species, and watching them climb nimbly through the branches was a real treat.

Bush Hyrax, right next to our room. A rare treat in South Africa.

And our grand finale, as we were driving away from the Outpost, we spotted no less than four different flap-necked chameleons making there way across the driveway. Drive slowly and keep your eyes peeled!

We spotted at least four flap-necked chameleons in the road while driving away from the Outpost.

A True Community Lodge

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Outpost Lodge is that it was conceived to benefit the local community of the makulele concession. In 1969, under apartheid rule, The Makuleke people were forcibly removed from the region. When democracy returned in the 90’s, the land was given back to the Makuleke on the condition that it be used for ecotourism under environmental management of Kruger National Park. Then, the Makuleke Community essentially rented the concession to the Outpost for a period of 30 years, during which 8% goes back to the community and after which the entire lodge is returned to community ownership. The theory is that after the 30 year concession, the community will have all the skills necessary to operate the lodge for their own benefit.

This arrangement represents one of the most advanced integrated conservation and sustainable development models in the world and provides real ownership and control to the Makuleke Community. The Outpost

The Verdict

If you have a big budget, The Outpost Lodge is a great safari lodge in Kruger National Park to see your dream African animals, get away from the crowds in Kruger, and get pampered a little bit along the way. You’ll sleep better knowing that your stay actually benefits the local people. And best of all, you can go on a game drive right from your bath tub. I remember feeling the same way when I visited Londolozi Private Game Reserve in South Africa. I was 32, but still felt like a young punk when it came to travel, and here I was in a post luxury game lodge that went for $900 a night! It took a long time before I felt truly comfortable being myself in places like that, but now I look at it as our reward for years and years of slaving away as an underpaid writer. Congrats! Sounds like a great place to dip your toes into the luxury waters...

I could totally get used to this. It was a real treat after a week of camping!

Beware the T-Rex: Dinosaur Outpost to open in Town Square

The Las Vegas family attraction, which is aimed at kids ages five to 12, features 15,000 square feet of interactive dinosaur exhibits.

Founder and owner Tim Clothier, posing with Hugo the Velociraptor, talks to a reporter inside D ...

Dinosaur lovers and Jurassic Park junkies alike in Las Vegas can thank Tim Clothier’s son for the latest store to open at Town Square.

Clothier, the founder of the Las Vegas-based show props and display company Illusion Projects, said Dinosaur Outpost, which opens at 1 p.m. Friday, is the product of his relationship with his kin.

“My son and I had a serious dinosaur thing,” he said. “So that was what we bonded over for many, many years, and so it just sort of made sense with this.”

The attraction, aimed at kids ages five to 12, is located at 6569 South Las Vegas Boulevard, Suite 173 and features 15,000 square feet of interactive dinosaur exhibits. Kids go through a time portal to enter and can do everything from playing tug of war with a Protoceratops and shoot Brussels sprouts from blaster cannons into the mouth of a Brontosaurus to riding on the back of a Pachyrhinosoraus.

Dinosaur Outpost is in a site that was previously a picture frame shop, a shoe store, a soap retailer and a performing arts center. It is also home to the Fossil Fuel Cafe and three party rooms for birthdays and private events.

Clothier said he chose the location because he’s hoping to cater to both Las Vegas residents and tourists who want to give their kids a break from the Strip.

“That’s why I picked Town Square. If I wanted to just go for locals, we could have gone in Summerlin or Henderson, but the beauty of Town Square from a local perspective is locals don’t have to go to the Strip, but people from the Strip can come here easily. It’s an easy Uber ride from any of the hotels.”

Clothier said he has a freelance dinosaur consultant on payroll. However, he’s learned a whole bunch of things about the extinct creatures in the process of setting up and getting everything ready to open.

“There’s a lot that I’ve learned about dinosaurs,” he said. “The historical aspect is obviously super fun, but I’ve also learned that we don’t know as much as we thought we did, and there’s a lot of stuff that is really fascinating. I’ve also learned how to squeeze a T-Rex through a door, and I can tell you, that’s not easy.”

Veteran taikonaut, 2 rookies launched on long-duration Chinese space station flight

By William Harwood

Updated on: April 25, 2024 / 4:31 PM EDT / CBS News

Three Chinese taikonauts blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on Thursday and set off after the the Tiangong space station to replace three long-duration crew members who are closing out a six-month stay in space.

With veteran Ye Guangfu, 43, at the controls of the Shenzhou 18 spacecraft, flanked by rookies Li Cong, 34, and Li Guangsu, 36, the Long March 2F rocket roared to life at 8:59 a.m. EDT (8:59 p.m. Beijing time) and smoothly climbed away on a southwesterly trajectory matching the station's orbit.

042524-launch.jpg

Ye and his crewmates then monitored an automated 6.5-hour rendezvous with the Tiangong station and docked at 3:32 p.m. EDT, joining Shenzhou-17 commander Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xinlin aboard the orbital outpost.

"My two crew members and I, as well as the entire space mission team, are fully prepared and confident (in our ability) to complete this space flight mission," Ye said in translated remarks during a news conference Wednesday.

Tang and his crewmates plan to depart and return to Earth with landing in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on April 30, closing out a six-month stay in orbit that began with launch on Oct. 25.

The Shenzhou 18 flight is China's seventh piloted mission to the space station and its fifth since around-the-clock staffing began in June 2022. The launching was carried live on Chinese television, providing spectacular shots of the rocket's climb to space and interior views of the taikonauts as they monitored cockpit displays.

Ye is the only space veteran on the crew, completing a 182-day tour of duty in 2021-22 as part of the Shenzhou 13 mission. Li Cong and Li Guangsu are rookies making their first flight.

As a first-time flyer, Li Guangsu said he was looking forward to traveling 7.9 meters per second — roughly 17,500 mph — and "cannot wait" to experience weightlessness.

crew-photo.jpg

"There are no wings, but I still can fly!" he said at the traditional pre-flight news conference. "What a great experience for me. I also would like to take this opportunity to see the blue planet, to have a good look at the marvelous landscape of our motherland."

During their stay in space, Ye and company will carry out a full slate of more than 90 scientific research projects along with two to three spacewalks to install external experiments, micrometeoroid shielding and other equipment.

Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the China Manned Space Agency, said the crew also will participate in ongoing science education outreach and unload the Tianzhou-8 cargo ship before their Shenzhou 19 replacements arrive in October.

The Chinese space station is made up of three large modules connected in a T-shaped configuration. The Tianhe core module, launched in April 2021, is the centerpiece of the complex, providing crew quarters, life support systems, communications, spacecraft controls, an airlock and multiple docking ports.

Two other large modules — Wentian and Mengtian — were attached to Tianhe in 2022. The station has a mass of about 100 tons.

The 450-ton International Space Station is made up of more than a dozen pressurized modules provided by the United States, Russia, the European Space Agency and Japan. Construction began in 1998 and the lab has been permanently staffed by rotating astronaut-cosmonaut crews since 2000.

042524-dual-crew.jpg

The Tiangong station has been permanently staffed since June 2022 with the arrival of the Shenzhou 14 crew. While smaller than the ISS, the Chinese lab is newer and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, computers and instrumentation.

NASA and its partners plan to retire the ISS in 2030, remotely driving it to a destructive re-entry in the atmosphere above the south Pacific Ocean, well away from shipping lanes and populated areas. That will leave Tiangong as the only government-operated space station in low-Earth orbit.

NASA is counting on commercial space stations operated by private companies to provide research opportunities in Earth orbit in the 2030s while the U.S. agency pursues a return to the moon later this decade with the agency's Artemis program .

China plans to launch its own taikonauts to the moon starting in 2030, fueling what NASA Administrator Bill Nelson calls a new superpower space race.

"It is a fact: We're in a space race," he told Politico in an interview published last year. "And it is true that we better watch out that they don't get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they say, 'keep out, we're here, this is our territory.'"

The CGTN news agency, quoting Lin, said the Long March-10 moon rocket, the Mengzhou (Dream Vessel) crew transport spacecraft and the Lanyue (Embracing the Moon) lunar lander have completed design reviews and prototypes are currently being tested.

NASA plans its first piloted Artemis mission late next year , launching three NASA astronauts and a Canadian flyer on a looping voyage around the moon and back to test the agency's Orion crew transport ship.

042524-shenzhou18-padview.jpg

If all goes well, NASA plans to land astronauts near the moon's south pole in the 2026-27 timeframe. But that will depend on SpaceX perfecting its Starship moon lander and Super Heavy booster.

China is in the process of selecting a fourth batch of taikonauts that Lin said will participate in space station activities as well as upcoming moon missions .

He repeated comments he made before the Shenzhou 17 launch, saying China, like the United States and its ISS partners, plans to begin launch fliers from other nations, including space tourists.

"We will accelerate the research and promotion of the participation of foreign astronauts and space tourists in flights with China's space station," he said in translated remarks published by The Washington Post. "We definitely expect to see astronauts of different identities on China's space station."

Bill Harwood has been covering the U.S. space program full-time since 1984, first as Cape Canaveral bureau chief for United Press International and now as a consultant for CBS News.

While it's mostly spot-on, it occasionally misses a beat, but that's a small trade-off for how much time and money it's saved me. Whether you're making big purchases or everyday buys, Tin keeps things private and secure, making it a must-have for effortless savings. Honestly, your wallet will thank you for this one.

Superb Shopping App

My friend raved about Tin, so I decided to give it a try. Within just 24 hours, I was blown away by how intuitive and helpful it is! The app is a breeze to set up, and the deals it finds are unreal. On my first shopping spree, I snagged discounts on several items that I've been eyeing for ages, effortlessly saving a hefty sum. Tin's automatic coupon feature at checkout is a game-changer – it feels like I have a personal assistant scouring the internet for the best deals, all for me. From tech gadgets to fashion finds, Tin has consistently delivered savings that make a difference. I can't recommend it enough – it's like having the inside scoop on the best sales every time I shop! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Your Outpost Lodge Experience

This unique lodge is situated in a remote part of Kruger National Park, in a wilderness area previously inaccessible to visitors. The Outpost Lodge is the result of a unique cooperation between private investors and the local community and is the first lodge built in this vast region.

Designed by an Italian-born architect, Enrico Daffonchio using simple, clean lines and combining elements of steel and canvas , the stunning contemporary design of this luxury northern Kruger Park lodge emphasizes its beautiful surroundings but blends in with the wilderness that is its home.

The Makuleke concession falls in the epicentre of the Great Limpopo Park , which comprises Kruger National Park, the Gaza National Park in Mozambique and the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe meaning that this luxury Kruger Park lodge is in an ideal location.

This visionary park has become a reality and guests are able to visit the Mozambican and Zimbabwean parts of the Peace Park without requiring visas and without having to exit the Peace Park.

Best to fly in. Stunningly beautiful area, lots of birds, less game animals. The lodge is a lovely design, with spacious rooms with blinds which open up fully to enhance the view. Great choice for a second or third safari, but not for a first safari as animals after fewer and more skittish. We didn't see any big cats or rhino or giraffe.
