Summary [ ]

Background information [ ].

  • This book constituted a format break with the earlier The Star Trek Compendium , Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion , and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion . Whereas the episode guides of these publications were increasingly beefed out with behind-the-scenes material from creators and production staff, this Companion had virtually none, save for the sporadic few cursorary cast interviews, shedding some light on characters.
  • The customer review section at Amazon.com showed that reception of the book by its readership was lukewarm at the very best. Particularly disappointing to them was the utter lack of background information, considered such a strong selling point in the previous outing, the DS9 Companion , and the book is therefore perceived as the weakest volume in the series of Companions.
  • Considered a deeply disappointing commercial flop, the book got a redo of sorts when a vastly improved work, written by Ben Robinson and Mark Wright for the series' 25th anniversary , was released in 2020 as Star Trek Voyager: A Celebration . Robinson stated on his book, " It's the book that Voyager always deserved and has never had. I am really pleased that we’ve been able to deliver it. " [1]

Award-winning and eight-time New York Times bestselling author Christie Golden has written nearly fifty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Among her many projects are over a dozen Star Trek novels, a similar number for gaming giant Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and StarCraft novels, three books in the nine-book Star Wars series, Fate of the Jedi, which she co-wrote with Troy Denning and the late and greatly missed Aaron Allston, and the novelization of Star Wars: The Clone Wars unaired episodes, Dark Disciple, which many reviews and lists have cited as the best of the new canon novels.

2014 saw the publication of no fewer than four novels. They were the highly successful World of Warcraft novel, War Crimes; Blackbeard: The Lost Journal, a companion book to the video game “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag”; a second Assassin’s Creed book, “Assassin’s Creed: Unity--Abstergo Employee Handbook” and The Accidental Knight, a novel set in the world of Cryptozoic’s online card game, HEX.

2015 saw only one book published, but it was a big one- her fourth Star Wars novel, Star Wars: The Clone Wars—Dark Disciple, novel featuring the popular characters Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos.

In 2016, Golden revisited two favorite franchises with Warcraft: Durotan, the prequel novel to the movie, Warcraft, based on Blizzard’s games, as well as the official novelization of the film itself. November 15 sees her returning to the world of Assassin’s Creed with Assassin’s Creed: Heresy, in which she introduces high-ranking Templar Simon Hathaway, who explores history at the side of Joan of Arc. Her September short story “Promises to Keep,” in the anthology Fractures, in contrast, marks her first exploration into the world of Halo

Golden launched the TSR Ravenloft line in 1991 with her first novel, the highly successful Vampire of the Mists, which introduced elven vampire Jander Sunstar. To the best of her knowledge, she is the creator of the elven vampire archetype in fantasy fiction. Several original fantasy novels include On Fire’s Wings, In Stone’s Clasp and Under Sea’s Shadow, the first three in her multi-book fantasy series “The Final Dance”. She is delighted to see her first original novels, Instrument of Fate and In Stone’s Clasp, available in an entirely new format as online books nearly fifteen years after their original publication.

Prior to her job as prolific bestselling novelist, Golden attended the University of Virginia, where she won the Clay E. Delauney Award for Playwrighting. She worked at USA Today and served as an editor at Orbit Video Magazine and The Retired Officer Magazine. She also worked as a teacher with the Writer’s Digest School, and currently accepts clients for in-depth critiquing. You can find her at christiegolden.com, on Facebook as Christie Golden, and on Twitter @ChristieGolden.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia with stints in Michigan, Virginia, Colorado, Tennessee, and Texas, Golden has returned to Virginia for a spell.

Star trek voyager: a celebration–excellent chronicle of the seven-year series arrives for 25th anniversary.

star trek voyager companion book

Review by C.J. Bunce

For a fan like me, Star Trek: Voyager was the definitive Star Trek series, the crew that most fully embraced Gene Roddenberry’s vision beyond the television series he created in 1966.  It featured a crew on a ship that explored like no crew before it, with only their available technology and their wits to survive.  Helmed by Kate Mulgrew’s personable yet tough Captain Kathryn Janeway, the crew would travel 70,000 light years home after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant.  The 25th anniversary of the launch of the series was 2020, and worthy of the celebration, authors Ben Robinson and Mark Wright have created the definitive behind the scenes account of the 1995-2001 series, Star Trek: Voyager–A Celebration , available now here at Amazon.

A few good books have been written about the series, including Paul Ruditis’s Star Trek: Voyager Companion .  Ruditis’s book was an episodic guide to every episode of the series from an in-universe story standpoint.  Star Trek: Voyager–A Celebration is a giant, 248-page, glossy, full-color, hardcover volume full of new interviews from the actors, writers, directors, and creative crew–a true look behind the scenes, including stories fans have never read before, and images from the production they probably haven’t seen before.  Like the spectacular look back at Star Trek: The Next Generation, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens’ The Continuing Mission (which I called one of the best Trek resources available here at borg back in 2012) this is the landmark book for its series that fans have been waiting for.  It’s the ultimate love letter to the series in the words of those who created it–reading these visionaries taking us back through the development of the show and the characters is a real treat.  I forgot how much I loved Bryan Fuller’s Star Trek, the scripts produced by Jeri Taylor, the late, great Michael Piller, the prolific Star Trek series writer Joe Menosky, and Brannon Braga.

star trek voyager companion book

The authors interviewed key cast members (and some guest stars, excepting only Kes actor Jennifer Lien), each looking back with specific memories and tales of their experiences, about being cast, the first season development, when their characters “came into their own” on the show, and how they worked with each other.  Each actor and character is featured in several pages of content, separated by an important episode highlighted in a two-page retrospective, followed by sections on the major production departments.   Rick Sternbach discusses development of concept art for the Voyager ship and development of the ship interior set designs, Robert Blackman discusses how he approached the costume design for this new setting after already working on Star Trek for more than a decade, Michael Westmore recounts his makeup for the show’s featured alien races and lead characters Neelix, B’Elanna Torres, and Kes, and Dan Curry recalls the workload producing the show’s visual effects (both practical and digital).  The authors engage in discussions featuring the changing writers room and directors, and Mike Okuda, Denise Okuda, and Doug Drexler discuss nuances behind some of their creations in the art department.

Kate Mulgrew recounts how Mike Okuda’s book of Trek details for the staff, called the Okudabible, helped her immerse herself into the role of Janeway and the future world of Star Trek.  Brannon Braga recalls that he wanted the brilliant “Year of Hell” two-part story to be a serialized story that lasted an entire season, but the studio wasn’t ready for that commitment then.  The story featured Kurtwood Smith as Annorax, the Krenim leader who wouldn’t stop changing timelines via a powerful weapon, until he “undid” his wife’s death–and almost destroyed the entire Voyager crew in the process–one of the series’ finest stories.

star trek voyager companion book

Another section of Star Trek: Voyager–A Celebration delves into the parallel success of Star Trek: First Contact, and how themes from that feature film were incorporated into the remaining seasons of Voyager to provide greater opportunities for storytelling.  One chapter reproduces production blueprints for the Klingon Barge of the Dead, another chapter covers designing the Delta Flyer, and another includes a list of some of the EMH’s best Dr. Bones McCoy-inspired sayings.  Also insightful is writer Nick Sagan describing The Twilight Zone episode “The After Hours” as inspiration for the episode “Course: Oblivion,” which he wrote with Bryan Fuller.  Braga recalls coming up with the Hirogen after watching Monday Night Football.  The book is full of great tidbits and trivia like this.

I was especially happy to read the biggest interview I’ve read in more than a decade with Robert Blackman, discussing the ever-changing workday for him and his costume shop, discussing actor reactions to his work, and how he had five Starfleet uniforms for the season for each crewman (there’s even a solo section on Jeri Ryan’s brief stint in that silver Seven of Nine catsuit).  I also loved seeing an interview with Star Trek: Voyager theme composer and soundtrack creator Jerry Chattaway.

star trek voyager companion book

The authors of Star Trek: Voyager–A Celebration provide a nifty analysis of how Voyager got home–how it specifically traversed 70,000 light years–via a Kes-powered “push” forward, unique spatial conditions, improvements in astrometrics, a wormhole, the quantum slipstreams, the transwarp conduit, the space catapult, and some help from our old supernatural frenemy Q.  A large survey includes pages of alien ship design concept artwork, and specific sections are devoted to The Borg, the Hirogen, Species 8472, and the Captain Proton holodeck program.  The book wraps with a description of every episode of the series’ seven seasons.

star trek voyager companion book

It’s the ultimate celebration for Star Trek: Voyager fans, and the very best behind the scenes account ever created for the series.  Celebrating 25 years of the Federation’s bravest crew, Star Trek: Voyager–A Celebration is available now here at Amazon, from Hero Collector.  All seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager are now streaming on Netflix.

They are really working to overthrow the caretaker so that they can find the chance to become the most powerful force in the region. The main character in this book is female captain Janeway. She has a mission to fulfil and this is the reason why she has been sent to carry out the investigation. She wants to find what exactly happened to the small ship known as the Maquis in which the security Liutenant Tuvok chief was infiltrated. In the process of investigation, the crew first point of landing was the Bad Lands. This is after tracking the last location of the engine emissions. The space is very unpredictable and turbulent as described by the crews. The voyager is suddenly pulled about 75,000 light years just from home on the opposite side of the galaxy. This occurs in the process of still trying to track the maquis ship. Due to the risky conditions, we find that most of the crews are seriously injured while others are killed during this this small trip. Among the killed officers are the voyagers’ nurse, chief engineering and first officer doctor. After this incident, the caretaker is somehow convinced by the strike of both maquis and Janeway to return them to the territory federation. Despite this threat, he finds it impossible because he wants to protect the people of Ocampa that is a nearby planet. Time then comes when the caretaker is almost dying, hence he doesn’t have any time for Janeway. Instead of aiding her, he request her to destroy the array once he is dead. The caretaker wants the array destroyed because he fears that the Kazon may use it against the people of Ocampa. The problem now remains on Janeway because she has a decision to make in life. By destroying this array implies that she, the crew plus the ship and her won’t be able to get home but instead takes another 70 years to reach. On the other hand, if she doesn’t destroy the array, then it implies that the helpless people of Ocampa will all die. She therefore has to make the best decision of either saving the people of Ocampa or saving her life plus her crew and ship. To get more about the book, then you should watch the fiction series movie and you will love the whole story. This is just but a small summary of this science fiction book. You can visit your nearby library or find the book online and find what decision Janeway made.

These are the first two books of the series that will give you the overview of the happenings in the series. The series has seven episodes that you can always follow. You can download the series or buy it online for a great watch. This is are some of the best works that were done by Gene Roddenberry.

Every item in our inventory has been inspected, very strictly graded, and bagged for its protection.

Shrink Wrapped. Still in the original factory shrink wrap, with condition visible through shrink noted. For example, "SW (NM)" means shrink wrapped in near-mint condition.

Perfect. Brand new.

Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible. Board & war games in this condition will show very little to no wear and are considered to be punched unless the condition note says unpunched.

Excellent. Lightly used, but almost like new. May show very small spine creases or slight corner wear. Absolutely no tears and no marks, a collectible condition.

Very Good. Used. May have medium-sized creases, corner dings, minor tears or scuff marks, small stains, etc. Complete and very useable.

Very well used, but complete and useable. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, etc.

  • Boxed items are listed as "code/code" where the first code represents the box, and the second code describes the contents. When only one condition is listed, then the box and contents are in the same condition.
  • A "plus" sign indicates that an item is close to the next highest condition. Example, EX+ is an item between Excellent and Near Mint condition. A "minus" sign indicates the opposite.
  • Major defects and/or missing components are noted separately.
  • Boardgame counters are punched, unless noted. Due to the nature of loose counters, if a game is unplayable it may be returned for a refund of the purchase price.
  • In most cases, boxed games and box sets do not come with dice.
  • The cardboard backing of miniature packs is not graded. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "card worn."
  • Flat trays for SPI games are not graded, and have the usual problems. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "tray worn."
  • Remainder Mark - A remainder mark is usually a small black line or dot written with a felt tip pen or Sharpie on the top, bottom, side page edges and sometimes on the UPC symbol on the back of the book. Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them.

To Captain Kathryn Janeway

How Voyager's captain helped one scientist-to-be fight for her dream.

Stylized and filtered photo of a repeating series of Captain Janeway with her arms crossed

StarTrek.com

I could finally see the end.

Months and months of PhD work were beginning to wind down, and I could see the light at the end of my dissertation tunnel. As I started writing out my acknowledgements to those who had helped me along the way, I looked back on the highs and lows of my studies. Even with the fruits of my labor nearly in hand, I found myself reflecting on the darkest days. There were celebrations along the way, but there were also moments of crushing defeat. On those days, when I felt most like dropping out and giving up, one person kept coming to the front of my mind.

The single woman who’d kept me going — Captain Kathryn Janeway.

Captain Janeway glances over with a pensive gaze

Star Trek was not exactly a staple of my childhood. The show didn't enter my life until later, and even then, it was mostly at college parties where my fellow physics majors always had random episodes playing in the background. It became an anchor for our friendships and was the center of many of our favorite memories. Eventually, I would finish up at my Colorado undergrad and leave my friends and family behind to pursue a PhD in Scotland. As I embarked on my new adventure, a certain Star Trek captain would emerge as a close companion, mentor, and inspiration.

Kate Mulgrew's portrayal of Captain Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager was everything I needed at that time of transition. Searching for 'adventure' often results a mixed bag of experiences, mixing moments of exciting accomplishments with long bouts of loneliness. In Scotland, I felt isolated having to make friends from scratch in a new culture. Instead of reaching through Star Trek and its fandom to connect with friends, I dove inside, seeking companionship within the fictional realm. I was drawn to Janeway — a strong, passionate woman, who found herself burdened with responsibility while facing new and unknown cultures. In her, I found a friend who, like me, immersed herself in the passions of gothic romance and fantastical Irish villages while trying to maintain an external veneer of confidence and professionalism.

Kathryn Janeway smirks as she gazes over her shoulder in 'Eye of the Needle'

"Eye of the Needle"

I could share in her successes and failures, such as the persistence in solving a mathematical puzzle in " Counterpoint ," or the feeling of fate working against you just as in " Eye of the Needle ." The fact that Janeway came from a science officer background and had such evident passion for data and science only drew me closer to her. While doing research in a large collaboration, I had to balance data and the search for answers against personalities and politics, which sometimes left me ready to give up. My PhD became my Alpha Quadrant and I drew strength from Janeway's ability to continue fighting and standing by her decisions as she drove towards her end goal.

This strong and intelligent Federation captain was not only my companion, but also a mentor. Her roots in science drew me in, but watching her careful balance of femininity in a demanding environment, while managing respect from her subordinates but also maintaining trust and friendships, was awe-inspiring. At the time, women made up only around 10 to 20 percent of people within my field of expertise, and with few options, I struggled in finding women to connect with. I wanted role models who could help guide me in my career decisions, or provide me with an example of the type of professional scientist I wanted to be.

While still clasping an open book, Kathryn Janeway places her hands on both of The Doctor's arms in 'Latent Image'

"Latent Image"

Yet, I saw myself in Captain Janeway's decisions, which gave me the strength to shape my own decisions. I learned a huge lesson in leadership when she made the decision to respect the Caretaker and destroy the array, along with any chance of getting her crew home. She did not waver in her order and was able to communicate her decision to the crew without being apologetic or requiring everyone to agree.

One of my favorite episodes is " Latent Image " where the Doctor finds that Janeway has been erasing a particular memory from him. The captain initially comes off as the villain of the story, until the viewer sees how that memory impacts the Doctor's ability to function and starts to side with Janeway's decision. She finds a compromise with him and, though it is difficult, she does what she can to help him through and stand by her actions every step of the way. I took note of her behavior — her way of standing by her decisions while still being open to suggestions — and incorporated it into my professional life which grew my own confidence and capabilities.

The final days of your PhD are not entirely unique; most people who've written a dissertation have similar stories of the burden of trying to distill years of research into a coherent demonstration of your capabilities. You feel overwhelmed, unworthy, and out of your depth. It can be isolating and frustrating. It's a dark time for many, and people start scrambling to find ways to cope. Janeway inspired me to the end; Voyager 's writers were not afraid to show how she handled stress and pressure. They weren't afraid to let her experience emotion. From allowing yourself to escape into a literary fantasy to sometimes just needing a cup of coffee, Janeway gave me that grace to realize what I needed and allow myself it. She reminded me of who I was and why I was chasing this degree. Her presence was a constant reminder that if I wanted to become even a semblance of who she was I had to keep pushing.

Captain Janeway lifts a tricorder and reads from it in 'The 37s'

"The 37s"

I regularly came back to the episode " The 37s ," where Voyager 's crew is given an out — a planet to live on and peacefully spend their lives. That option was all too tempting and Janeway recognized that if she was tempted, her crew probably would be too. Many times, I thought things would be easier if I just went back home, reunited with my boyfriend, and pursued a different career among old friends and familiar settings. Her crew became my crew in that moment when they decide to stay behind and continue with her. Their loyalty and dedication to her and the mission they were on boosted me, and in that moment, the crew of Voyager became my rock.

Kathryn Janeway inspired me, mentored me, and held my hand through thick and thin. She drove me to be better, to be stronger, to not give up. So as I sat there reflecting on this moment the perfect words for my acknowledgements came to me. I wrote, "Finally, to Captain Kathryn Janeway. I cannot describe the level of inspiration she provided me right when I was on the verge of giving up."

This single sentence summed up everything I couldn't express or understand of what Captain Janeway had given me. I simply knew my relationship with her was significant and would stay with me forever.

In the first series of the book, we find a female character who is also the captain named Kathryn Janeway. It is played by Kate Mulgrew who is the main character.

  18. Star Trek Voyager Companion

Ostensibly, the Voyager Companion follows in the footsteps of the TNG and DS9 predecessors; each episode gets a synopsis, plus some background information on how the episode was created. In fact, the book is a significant step down in quality (fitting enough really; the show was too). The amount of behind the scenes information is severely slashed.

  19. Star Trek Voyager Companion

Additional features include a particular focus on favorite themes which figure strongly in the Star Trek: Voyager universe, such as Captain Proton, Time Travel and Contact with the Alpha Quadrant. The book is packed with black and white pictures, including many on-set or behind-the-scenes photographs seen here for the first time.
