Virtual Safari

Timon and Pumbaa's Virtual Safari is a feature that has been included in DVDs for The Lion King , The Lion King II: Simba's Pride , and The Lion King 1½ .

Virtual Safari [ ]

The feature is narrated by Timon and Pumbaa , who take the viewer on a virtual tour of the Pride Lands . One of the stops is an area called Restaurant Road, with a bug-focused restaurant on the left and a hyena-run restaurant on the right.

Virtual Safari 2.0 [ ]

This version of Virtual Safari is heavily influenced by the first. It features some of the same elements, such as the character of Gertie the Elephant. In the final scene, Stitch from Lilo & Stitch makes a cameo.

Virtual Safari 1.5 [ ]

For this version of Virtual Safari, Timon and Pumbaa have built a ride called the Lion King Pride Lands Adventure, and are taking Ma and Max for a ride. Despite initial difficulties caused by Timon sitting on the "On" button, the group actually goes through parodies of various Disneyland attractions, including "It's a Small World", "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride", "Matterhorn Bobsleds", "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Jungle Cruise", "The Haunted Mansion", and "Splash Mountain". No matter which good choice is selected, however, Uncle Max will still refer to this ride as the worst he has ever ridden on.

Video Game / Timon and Pumbaa's Virtual Safari

Edit locked.

Timon and Pumbaa's Virtual Safari is a bonus feature from the 2003 Platinum Edition release of The Lion King , and later the 2004 DVD release's of The Lion King 1 ½ and The Lion King II: Simba's Pride . It stars the eponymous Timon and Pumbaa as they take players on a "virtual safari" through the Pride Lands and other locales, often encountering characters from the films and other strange oddities. Each game has the player choose left or right at designated checkpoints, with different encounters and characters found in each choice, up to and including how the climax of the ride will play out.

This game consists of the following tropes:

  • Animal Stampede : A mandatory plot event in the first game has Timon and Pumbaa get caught in another wildebeest stampede.
  • Bad Guy Bar : The restaurant operated by the hyenas in the first edition appears to be this as their menu consists of food using meerkats and warthogs.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space : Timon and Pumbaa get launched into space towards the end of 2.0 and can still breathe just fine, let alone survive their journey back to Earth.
  • Call-Back : The Rafiki animatronic in 2.0 quotes lines from both of the previous movies - "Look beyond what you see - so what are you going to do?"
  • The Cameo : In one ending of 2.0 , Stitch makes a cameo while Timon and Pumbaa are floating in space.
  • Carnivore Confusion : In the parody of Pirates of the Caribbean in 1.5 , a hyena pirate chases a citizen for a plate of grubs, and Timon's Ma even asks why he's trying to get grubs in the first place.
  • Denser and Wackier : While the first edition was already zany, 1.5 really ramps it up to accommodate the midquel also being much wackier in tone with lots of Disney theme park references.
  • If they go through the left side's drive-thru, they get to feast on bug-related foods and leave content.
  • If they go through the right side's drive-thru, they learn that the restaurant is run by the hyenas who serve meerkat and warthog-based foods to customers and have to escape before Banzai and Ed catch them.
  • Elephant Graveyard : The location appears in all three editions of the game.
  • In the first installment, they are running a fast food restaurant specializing in meerkats and warthogs, and are later shown at the Elephant Graveyard before chasing the duo through a cave.
  • In 1.5 , they appear towards the end of the tour to menace the group, and are also seen in various decorations such as the paintings parodying the Haunted Mansion.
  • In 2.0 , the player may choose to inadvertently briefly strand Timon and Pumbaa in the Elephant Graveyard where they'll briefly menace them.
  • Incredibly Lame Pun : Pumbaa makes a few in the first edition to Timon's frustration.
  • In the first edition, Timon says the river is full of alligators. Pumbaa corrects him stating that alligators are in North America, whereas Africa has crocodiles.
  • Timon's Ma even asks why there's a Yeti underground near Pride Rock in 1.5 , and Timon chalks it up to "artistic license".
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile : In the first edition, Timon and Pumbaa ride their boat through a bunch of hungry crocodiles who attack them.
  • In the first edition, the player may ride past Pride Rock which is observed by Timon and Pumbaa, though Timon complains about how a rock can be proud, quoting himself in the then-unreleased midquel.
  • In 1.5 , the group may encounter a Yeti randomly underground near Pride Rock. Given the focus on parodies of Disney theme park rides, this was probably a nod to the forthcoming Expedition Everest on its way to Animal Kingdom at the time.
  • Shout-Out : One of the main themes of 1.5 is the prevalence of parodies of Disney theme park rides. We see parodies of the Haunted Mansion , It's a Small World , Pirates of the Caribbean , and even the forthcoming Expedition Everest .
  • Verbal Backspace : After the first edition concludes, Timon gives a cheery farewell to the player, and Pumbaa worriedly asks if that's all he's going to say after all they've been through. Timon insists it was just a ride, and Pumbaa immediately backpedals and claims he knew it was a ride the whole time.

Disney’s Virtual Safari Puts Timon and Pumbaa in Driver’s Seat

Lion King DVD Set-Top Game Repurposes Digital Assets for New 3D Experience.

simba01_LionKingDVD.jpg

Timon and Pumbaa step into their own with Virtual Safari , which is included in the new Lion King special edition DVD. All images © Disney. All rights reserved.

Timon and Pumbaa have come a long way since their Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-like turn in The Lion King . Early next year, the zany meerkat and warthog star in their own Disney DVD premiere, The Lion King 1-1/2 , but in the meantime they host Virtual Safari , a fun and fitting set-top game on the new Lion King special edition DVD thats a cross between the venerable Jungle Cruise and Indiana Jones Disney theme park rides. With a simple flick of the remote, viewers can choose between the jeep and jungle cruiser options and take a wild ride with their nervous guides as they navigate through dangerous territory, while familiar images from the movie dart back and forth. You may think youre in control of the direction, but Timon and Pumbaa are in the drivers seat (with Ernie Sabella reprising the voice of Pumbaa and a Nathan Lane sound-alike voicing Timon).

Thus, Virtual Safari marks the first time that Buena Vista Home Entertainment has partnered so ambitiously with its colleagues at Disney Feature Animation and DisneyToon Studios to produce a virtual set-top game of this type. Our quest was to expand the set top experience and, given that it was The Lion King , to try and do something that was a higher benchmark, explains Andy Siditsky, sr vp worldwide creative services and DVD production. We thought: wouldnt it be cool to create a virtual tour through The Lion King experience. We started thinking about various theme park rides land Timon and Pumbaa were our natural hosts. That led to different ways of doing it and different pieces and wondering where would you go?

We talked about a jeep tour and a boat tour and even a walking tour, but then it became too long. Working with re-recording mixer Terry Porter, we brainstormed [within our small group]. We worked very closely with the Feature Animation team in developing the animation and assets for this kind of experience. Honestly, we didnt know if we could pull it off. This had never been done before. We went down to Walt Disney World and hung out on [ The Jungle Cruise ] and read some of the scripts and really used those as our guide. In fact, I had a script that Disneyland had issued a long time ago. By doing this experiment as we did and ending up where we did, its given us a whole new avenue to create these virtual safari type of experiences.

Indeed, there will be another virtual game on The Lion King 1-1/2 DVD to be released Feb. 10, 2004. Only this time the roller coaster experience will be patterned after Mr. Toads Wild Ride , with a lot more humor and Lane on hand to voice Timon.

20% of Lion King was repurposed for Virtual Safari.

Siditsky adds that the initial challenge was how to make the game appealing as a set-top experience, since were competing with so many others, and how do we relate it to The Lion King and enhance the experience within this theme park-style ride on DVD. There was a lot of trial and error and the script writing was something that we wanted to make sure was engaging enough and had some adult humor too.

Meanwhile, from an animation standpoint, the trick was how to repurpose the movie into the game. The challenge on any of these things is to really try to get the quality up to the level of the movie, adds Dave Bossert, a producer/artistic coordinator on Virtual Safari , who served as an FX animator on The Lion King back in 95. You know youre never going to do that due to time and budget restraints, but thats the goal. And I think in this particular case, the lushness, the fun of it and the amount of information shows [after six months of work].

The creative success of Virtual Safari has given Disney impetus to include another game on The Lion King 1-1/2 DVD next year.

Bossert, who currently works at DisneyToon Studios, says they wound up combining traditional and CG elements throughout the game. For instance, when Timon and Pumbaa are in their jeep and get stuck in the famous Wildebeast Stampede, the animators put in a different environment. We took some beautiful backgrounds from the movie and cut them apart digitally and created a new jungle along the riverbank, layering in new materials.

Bossert suggests that this is the first time theres been such a synergy at the studio among the home entertainment and animation divisions and outside vendors. It was a very creative environment with a lot of conversations going on without the typical youre supposed to do this and youre supposed to do that. I spent a number of hours at John Ross shop at Gork Enterprises and it was a very collaborative process. We supplied them with digital images that were projection mapped onto billboards. They put together the CG elements and digital artwork and built the environments. I helped them match the look of the film, such as when repurposed monkeys jump up and down on the bow of the jungle cruiser.

Bossert estimates that about 20% of The Lion King was repurposed for Virtual Safari . We were able to use environmental bits from the movie so that it felt like you were going through part of the Pridelands as opposed to starting from scratch.

Blu-Ray Review: The Lion King (Walt Disney Signature Collection)

timon and pumbaa safari virtual

Jokingly referred to as “ Bambi in Africa,” the film tells the story of young Simba, prince of the Pride Lands. When his jealous uncle Scar plots to kill both Simba and his father Mufasa, Simba escapes and grows up in exile under the care of the carefree Timon and Pumbaa. But when his past returns to haunt him, he must return home to take his place as king to free his people from his uncle’s terrible rule.

The Lion King has the storytelling power to touch your soul and makes you feel the full spectrum of emotions in its 90-minute runtime. This powerful storytelling was not only a worldwide hit upon its initial release, but it also holds up as the most prestigious film in the Disney cannon, proving more popular than even Beauty and the Beast or Snow White in these modern times.

The iconic music by Elton John, Tim Rice, Hans Zimmer, and Lebo M. blend African stylings and pop sensibilities. It opened the door for projects like Moana which essentially captured the same magic formula. In this release, the film is presented as the “Original Theatrical Version” or in Sing-Along mode for the first time so you can follow stylized on-screen lyrics while watching the film.

This release corrects a few wrongs from the Diamond Edition. A shot had accidentally removed clouds from the sky following Simba’s discussion with ghost Mufassa, which have been restored on this version. The Virtual Vault has also been omitted, although most of the bonus features from the Platinum and Diamond Editions have been relegated solely to the digital copy and are left off the disc.

The Lion King ’s Walt Disney Signature Collection release can be purchased as a Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Combo Pack, which is the subject of this review. It can also be obtained digitally through all major providers, but the incentive to buying the physical release is a limited edition film frame. This review details all of the specifics of the Combo Pack.

Bonus Features

The following bonus features are available on the Blu-Ray disc. If it is new to this release, it is indicate in the description.

  • Visualizing a Villain (2:53) – New – Performance artist David Garibaldi paints a large image of Scar while dancers perform “Be Prepared.” Yes, it is very weird.
  • The Recording Sessions (4:46) – New – Directors Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers introduce this clip reel of the voice actors in the studio in the early 90’s, mostly sourced from VHS resources.

  • Bloopers & Outtakes (3:44) – Animated bloopers created for the Diamond Edition release, sometimes using real recording session bloopers and other times completely made up animated moments. The flash animation style is a huge downgrade from what you will see in the films or even the sequels.
  • The Morning Report: Extended Scene (2:30) – Produced for the Platinum Edition DVD, this song from the Broadway show was inserted back into the film. This release does not allow you to watch the film with the scene, but it can be viewed here as a bonus feature.

  • Musical Origins (3:46) – Interviews with the creative team of the Broadway show about why it was adapted for the stage.
  • Screen to Stage (3:26) – Roy Disney talks about how the success of Beauty and the Beast on Broadway lead to The Lion King in this short feature about how the story was brought to life.

  • “Circle of Life” Music Video (4:11) – Disney Channel’s Circle of Stars assembled for their first of two Platinum Edition music videos, featuring talented young performers like Raven Symone, Hilary Duff, Christy Carlson Romano, and Anneliese Van Der Pol.

  • DVD Sound Design (4:59) – Don Hahn talks about how much he loves DVDs and the 5.1 surround sound mix created for the Platinum Edition.

There aren’t any bonus features on the DVD disc, the new standard for Disney Combo Packs.

The included film strip features three frames of Rafiki lifting baby Simba up on Pride Rock. It is sealed inside a sturdy card and the back gives you a description of what this is. Advertised as owning a piece of the film, it is actually a reproduction created just for this release.

What’s missing? The Special Edition viewing mode is once again left out, meaning you can’t watch the film with “The Morning Report” seamlessly inserted. The Second Screen app experience was not carried over to this release from the Diamond Edition. Going back to the Platinum Edition, we lose the Virtual Safari plus three games (Timon’s Grab-a-Grub, Pumbaa’s Sound Sensations, and The Lion King Personality Profile). The DVD also featured a “Hakuna Matata” music video by Lebo M. created to promote the album Rhythm of the Pride Lands . And back to the days of VHS and Laserdisc, the official “The Making of The Lion King ” is once again nowhere to be found, although the interviews from it were harvest for many of the included Platinum Edition bonus features, and a host of storyboards sequences.

With the exception of the clouds being restored, this transfer looks identical to the Diamond Edition release. Colors and detail are consistently vivid and aliasing is at a minimum, presumably in the source material and not an issue with the transfer. It’s an impressive experience in HD on Blu-Ray.

The DVD looks soft in comparison to the Blu-Ray with extreme bright and dark colors unable to capture the luster of the

The primary audio track on Blu-Ray is a 7.1 DTS-HD mix that is exactly like the one on the 2011 release. It uses the full sound field with Hans Zimmer’s amazing score and sound effects, placing you in the center of the action. Other audio options include French and Spanish 5.1 mixes.

The DVD presents all three languages in 5.1 surround. It provides a similar effect to the 7.1 mix, but in comparison sounds less full.

Packaging & Design

The Lion King arrives in a standard-sized Blu-Ray case with disc holders on both sides of the interior. Inserts include the film frames, a digital copy/Disney Movie Rewards code, and a flier for Disney Movie Club. The initial pressing comes with a holofoil embossed slipcover for a limited time.

Both discs open with an ad for Pixar’s Coco ( Dante’s Lunch ). Selecting “Sneak Peeks” plays additional ads for Disney Movie Rewards and The Lion Guard . The menu features scenes from the film being created in splashes of paint.

Final Thoughts

The Walt Disney Signature Collection version of The Lion King offers breathtaking picture and sound on Blu-Ray plus a few new bonus features. The majority of the classic bonus features are sadly exclusive to the digital copy, but at least they are available somehow. The addition of the bonus film strip is a nice bonus, but certainly not a big enough reason for current owners of the film to upgrade.

Timon & Pumbaa's Vacation Safari

  • View history

The short was first included in the 2012 DVD, Blu-ray and digital releases of The Lion King 1½ where it was released on March 6 , 2012 prior to the Diamond Edition of The Lion King returning to the Disney Vault on April 30 , 2013 . When The Lion King 1½ was re-released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 29 , 2017 along with The Lion King II: Simba's Pride , the short was included exclusively on the Blu-ray and digital formats of the home video's release, as the 2017 DVD edition has completely removed all bonus features.

Timon and Pumbaa are watching a movie via projector screen at the jungle waiting for everyone to watch. Soon as the movie starts, they see footage of live-action animals - specifically animals representing African fauna just as Pumbaa explains to Timon that there are many animals like the ones in the video seen in the Pride Lands and throughout the montage, Timon tells him that he is ruining the script he made. The scene loops into a hippopotamus swimming underwater, where Timon explains to Pumbaa that hippos can be extremely aggressive creatures, followed by Timon looking at a crocodile (whom he thinks it is an alligator) which Pumbaa tells Timon the difference between alligators and crocodiles. The next animal the two seen is the rhinoceros which Pumbaa explains to Timon that the rhinoceros' name originates from the Greek words for "horn" and "nose", explaining to him that despite their weak eyesight, rhinos have a great sense of hearing and scent.

After this, Pumbaa and Timon are commenting on the footage of warthogs and meerkats like their own species, showing the differences of what makes these species unique. After Pumbaa tells Timon that meerkats like him are immune to venom from scorpions , the former tells Timon that he has a scorpion on him which Timon overreacts, interrupting the movie for a bit, figuring out that Timon is safe after all. As Timon and Pumbaa continue watching the movie, they see footage of African elephants , with Timon explaining that elephants can drink over forty gallons of water a day and communicate through bellowing. Pumbaa suddenly hears an overlapping stampede, which Timon mistakes them for their guests to which as the stampede arrives, the animals pass through the projector screen, causing Timon and Pumbaa's movie to become ruined. Pumbaa asks Timon if he can finish the hors d'oeuvres which Timon tells him to do so.

Voice Cast [ ]

  • Kevin Schon as Timon
  • Ernie Sabella as Pumbaa
  • On the start of the short, the projector screen features the opening credits on Timon and Pumbaa's "movie" where Timon is the only one "credited" on making this "movie" - hinting that Timon was the only one who "made" the "movie".
  • Footage from Disney's Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort was used in the short - specifically focusing on animals from the Africa section of the park as confirmed by the short's ending.

How it Works

When you press the "Start Journey" button, the first video of the experience will begin. Our hosts on the safari, Pumbaa and Timone, will guide the journey and prompt you, the player, when to make a choice of which direction to take the Jeep. At this time, the video will exit fullscreen and two corresponding buttons will appear that can either be clicked or tapped to play the next video.

All you have to do is to play along and have fun!

Why did I make this?

Before completing the program, the only "playable" version was people's recordings of the game on YouTube. I wanted to bring this interactive experience which was near and dear to my heart into an online format where the ability to influence and play the game is possible.
