Jessie diggins gets second race win of tour de ski.

Jessie Diggins earned her second win in three stages of the Tour de Ski, moving back into first place in the overall standings of the Tour de France-like cross-country skiing stage race.

Diggins won a furious sprint to the finish line of a 10km freestyle in Oberstdorf, Germany, outdueling Swede Frida Karlsson (by a half-second) and Russian Tatiana Sorina (by eight tenths).

“It felt pretty extreme,” Diggins said of the finish. “It probably didn’t look very graceful or very pretty.”

Diggins, who is already qualified for the Olympics, retook the lead in the Tour de Ski by 13 seconds over Finland’s Kerttu Niksanen through three of six stages. The Tour continues with a classic sprint on Saturday ( broadcast schedule here ).

Last year, Diggins became the first non-European man or woman to win the Tour de Ski, which some of the world’s best skiers sat out.

Some stars are again passing on this year’s Tour, including Maja Dahlqvist of Sweden and Norwegian standout Therese Johaug .

Diggins is an Olympic medal threat in the freestyle sprint, which she won to open the Tour de Ski on Tuesday.

Women also race a 10km at the Olympics, but at this year’s Winter Games it will be in the classic format, whereas Diggins is better in freestyle.

In 2018, Diggins and now-retired Kikkan Randall won the Olympic team sprint when it was a freestyle event, giving the U.S. its first cross-country skiing gold medal. In 2022, the team sprint will be a classic event.

Jessie Diggins Begins Tour De Ski Title Defense With Win In Opening Stage

by  Jessie Diggins Begins Tour De Ski Title Defense With Win In Opening Stage

tour de ski 31 december 2021

Jessie Diggins competes at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships Oberstdorf at on Feb. 27, 2021 in Oberstdorf, Germany.

Jessie Diggins has more on her mind this year than defending her historic Tour de Ski title from last season, but why not do that and qualify for the Olympic Games Beijing 2022? Diggins got off to a great start on both fronts with her stage win Tuesday in the opening round of the Tour de Ski in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, topping the freestyle sprint field in a time of 3:00.12. Norway’s Mathilde Myhrvold ran second in 3:00.25 and Anamarija Lampic of Slovenia was third at 3:00.42. Team USA’s Julia Kern finished just off the podium in fourth, .59 seconds back. “I'm so proud of our team,” Diggins said to U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “(We) had really amazing skis…they were flying out there and we had a great day as a team.”  The win was the 12th career world cup victory for Diggins and her first on the circuit this season. She now has three total podium finishes and ranks third in the overall standings. Diggins, who last season became the first North American to win the Tour de Ski, ranks second in the Tour de Ski standings after finishing 16th in the second stage on Wednesday. Diggins was 1:07.90 off the pace in the 10-kilometer classic race won by Finland’s Kerttu Niskanen, who now leads the Tour de Ski. The six-stage event next moves to Oberstdorf, Germany for distance and sprint races on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, respectively.  In addition to battling for the Tour de Ski title, Diggins is in good shape for Olympic qualification as she is the only American to place in the top two at a world cup this season. Diggins is seeking to qualify for her third Olympic Winter Games, where she will look to defend her gold medal from 2018. She and teammate Kikkan Randall won the team sprint in PyeongChang to become the first Americans to win a cross-country skiing gold medal.

Jessie diggins begins defense of tour de ski title by winning first stage.

Jessie Diggins likes to say that happiness is fast. Tuesday, she proved it, winning the opening stage of the Tour de Ski in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

The defending Tour de Ski champion was cheered by her family — including parents Deb and Clay Diggins of Afton — as she topped the field in a freestyle sprint. Diggins clocked a time of three minutes, 0.12 seconds in the final, besting Norway's Mathilde Myhrvold by 0.13 of a second. Julia Kern of the U.S. was fourth.

The victory was Diggins' first of the World Cup season. She also has three second-place finishes, putting her third in the women's overall standings.

"It was so special for me to have my family here,'' said Diggins, whose parents, sister and fiance traveled to Switzerland to spend Christmas with her. "I came into [Tuesday's race] in a good place, rested and ready to go.''

The U.S. will not name its Olympic cross-country team until mid-January, but Diggins already has met the criteria to make the roster for the Beijing Games. She won both the semifinal and final Tuesday on her way to her 12th career World Cup victory. Last year, she became the first American to win the overall title in the Tour de Ski, an annual multi-stage event.

Tuesday, Diggins cruised to the lead on the second lap of the final and held off Myhrvold and Anamarija Lampic of Slovenia. Kern's fourth-place finish also met the criteria for Olympic selection.

Alayna Sonnesyn, a Plymouth native and Wayzata High School graduate, also competed for the U.S. and finished 58th.

The Tour de Ski continues Wednesday in Lenzerheide with a 10-kilometer classic race for women and a 15k classic for men. The event includes six races in eight days, spread over three cities in Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

Tour de Ski Viewing Guide: December 31–January 8, Val Müstair, Oberstdorf, and Val di Fiemme

Welcome back from the holidays to this Tour de Ski edition of the viewing guide. Hope you had lots of good skiing and time with loved ones.

The World Cup crew has had a break of just under two weeks since their last race. For those athletes contesting the full Tour de Ski, they’ll be jumping into seven different races, in three different countries, over nine days, starting tomorrow. Some athletes are going into stage one planning on contesting less than the full Tour; Iivo Niskanen, for example, who is returning to World Cup racing following both Covid and the birth of a child , plans to reassess after the first three races and decide at that time whether or not he will continue on into race number four and following.

You can find a full list of American starters for this year’s Tour here . The short version is that eight men and five women will be starting for the U.S. The only American to make a Tour de Ski podium across the first sixteen years of the Tour’s existence, Jessie Diggins (third overall in the 2017/2018 Tour, first overall in 2021), is among those five athletes. She is joined by, among others, Rosie Brennan, whose highest Tour de Ski finish of sixth places her second all-time among non-Diggins Americans (Liz Stephen was fifth in the 2014/2015 Tour).

The best roundup of starters from most other nations may be found in this Twitter feed . By this point, less than 24 hours before the first race, you can also just consult the official start lists for tomorrow’s skate sprint: men and women .

There are 100 men and 71 women on the start list for the opening stage of this year’s Tour de Ski.

Here is when and where the races will be held over the next week:

Val Müstair, Switzerland (local time at venue: GMT +1, six hours ahead of East Coast Time)

Oberstdorf, Germany (local time at venue: GMT +1, six hours ahead of East Coast Time)

Val di Fiemme, Italy (local time at venue: GMT +1, six hours ahead of East Coast Time)

Need help viewing the races from the U.S.? Here’s our full article on how to watch .

Stay tuned for what Nordic Insights’ coverage of this year’s Tour de Ski will look like. Our lead reporter, Gavin Kentch, will be on site in Houghton all week for U.S. Nationals (assuming he ever leaves the Chicago airport, where he currently is), and will be covering those races full time. We anticipate having additional reporters jump in so as to be able to cover the Tour as well alongside this domestic racing. Bear with us as we navigate our way through the single biggest ski week in the year, across a range of time zones.

Finally, I want to be sure to share these thoughts from American skier Finn O’Connell in advance of the Tour. O’Connell has start rights for this year’s Tour de Ski by dint of being the top-ranked skier through two race weekends and seven races in Period 1 of this season’s domestic SuperTour circuit. Earlier this month I asked O’Connell about his process goals for his World Cup debut, about what he learned through qualifying for the World Cup via a Tour de Ski–esque stint of seven races in twelve days, and about the financial costs of racing in Europe. Here are his answers, via email to Nordic Insights:

“I am indeed accepting my starts at Tour de Ski! I am very excited to get over there and finally get the chance to prove myself against the best in the world. I wouldn’t change how I am getting my first WC starts for any other way. At the end of last year, I was unsure whether or not I would be done racing. I have always wanted to be a pilot, and I was thinking about starting to pursue that route. However, making the US Ski Team made that decision easy for me. I then sorta assumed I would get Period 1 WC starts. But I found out early July this wasn’t the case. This made me more determined to train smarter and harder through the summer and fall. I still stand by the fact that it’s harder to make the WC then stay on the WC. The SuperTour circuit is so competitive these days that I knew it would be incredibly hard to get over there. But I did, and here we are.

“My process goals don’t change much going into the Tour than going into Period 1 of the SuperTours. It’s 8 vs 7 races in a very short time. My goal is to trust my training and fitness and see where that takes me. I need to prioritize rest, and eating lots of food, and success will come. I have yet to do a WC and have yet to race many of the American guys there in a long time, but my goal is to finish Val di Fiemme as the top American!  The second question ties into that answer. If I do the same thing as the last 7 races, I should be able to feel the same this time. And with the ease of being on the WC, like not having to worry about waxing skis, or cooking meals, it should be even better!

“Being COC [Continental Cup, in this case the American SuperTour] leader gets me funding from FIS directly, and also being a member of the [U.S. Ski Team] B Team covers all world cup expenses as well. So the funding is covered while I am there. I should say though that it is harder for us small teams, talking about the Bridger Ski Foundation, to raise enough money for a season of training and racing domestically. We have to cover racing expenses for most of the season, and we work very hard to have enough funding to just get us through the summer and fall training camps, as well as the early season racing. We just launched a campaign if people want to help support my team.”

— Gavin Kentch

Jessie Diggins ups Tour de Ski lead with 17th World Cup win

W ith no Olympics or world championships this season, the annual Tour de Ski takes on greater significance for cross-country skiers.

American Jessie Diggins built a substantial 47-second lead through the first three of seven stages, seeking to win the Tour de France-like event for a second time.

She was ninth in the opening freestyle sprint last Saturday, then third in a classic 10km on Sunday before winning a 20km freestyle pursuit on Monday for her American record-extending 17th FIS World Cup victory.

Diggins was fourth-fastest overall in Monday's pursuit, but she was the first starter due to her seven-second lead in the Tour standings after the first two stages.

Nobody caught her, and she added 40 seconds to her lead going into the fourth stage, Wednesday's freestyle sprint in Davos, Switzerland.

That's followed by 20km and 15km classic races on Thursday and Saturday, then Sunday’s grueling, closing 10km climb up Alpe Cermis in Italy.

In January 2021, Diggins became the first skier outside Europe to win a Tour, which at the time was the biggest individual title of her career. She since won her first two individual Olympic medals (silver and bronze) and last February became the first American to win an individual world title in the sport.

In 2021, Diggins led by five seconds after three Tour stages and by the end won by 1:24.8, the fifth-largest margin of the 17 women's Tours held so far.

This year, her 47-second lead is greater than the difference between second place and 10th place.

Diggins also leads this season's World Cup overall standings, which takes into account every race from November into March, through 12 of 34 scheduled races.

In 2021, she paired her Tour de Ski crown with a World Cup overall title, becoming the second American — and first American woman — to claim the latter.
