Victorian government reveals design for Melbourne's answer to Eiffel Tower

Big white building with arches towers over an expansive garden, with people gathered on surrounding paths

The Victorian government has unveiled the designs for a new gallery which has been labelled Melbourne's answer to the Eiffel Tower.

Key points:

  • The winning design for a new contemporary gallery has been unveiled to the public
  • The new site in Southbank is expected to be completed in 2028
  • Response to the new design has been mixed with concerns raised about urban design and infrastructure impacts

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Contemporary will be the gallery's third site and Australia's largest gallery.

The winning design was put forward by Angelo Candalepas and Associates.

It features 13,000 square metres of display space, and an expansive rooftop terrace with views of the Melbourne CBD.

"What we would like to do, is present to the world through the efforts of this great state, something that engages in the imagination … for the benefit of everyone in the world," Mr Candalepas said.

Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson called the design "iconic" and "breathtaking".

"This is going to be an absolute game changer for our state," he said.

"It's [going to] put us on the world map as being a destination for great creative and cultural events.

"As the Eiffel Tower is to Paris … National Gallery of Victoria Contemporary will be to Melbourne."

He said the state was forecasting about a million visitors a year, saying it would "drive incredible levels of visitation".

NGV director Tony Ellwood told ABC Radio Melbourne "infrastructure has held us back in this country, because we haven't had the right heights, we haven't had the right weight bearing loads – this building address all of that.

"We've often said we need something that defines our city architecturally – I think this building will do that," he said.

Council and architecture community split on new design

However, the reception of the new gallery's design has been mixed.

Associate professor in Architectural Practice at the Melbourne School of Design, Peter Raisbeck, said the design was an "older and conservative idea of architecture".

"It's not going to challenge the pre-conceived notions of the general public and what they might have about art," he said.

"We've got something in concrete and stone with some sunlight on it, and that's about it."

The new gallery is part of a $1.7 billion redevelopment of the Southbank precinct, the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation, which also includes upgrades to the Arts Centre Melbourne, as well as Arts Centre Melbourne's new Centre for Creativity.

Dr Raisbeck said his biggest concern with the designs was the wind.

"How windy it's going to be in that particular environment? And … how pleasant would it be in that garden?" he said.

Melbourne's Lord Mayor Sally Capp has welcomed the new design, calling it "a monumental city-shaping project for Melbourne".

NGV Contemporary interior design

The council did express concern at a February meeting about some aspects of the design, including "the building envelope including the height and building projections of the new NGVC building at 77 Southbank Boulevard and associated visual, amenity, urban design and infrastructure impacts".

Councillor Rohan Leppert, the deputy portfolio lead for the city planning portfolio, said the design was "certainly spectacular" but expressed concern about the "canyon-y" interface to the west and whether it would cast excessive shadow on Southbank Boulevard.

He said he wanted to see the plans for the building, not just the artist's rendition of the potential site.

Construction is expected to start in the next 12 months, with the building expected to be completed by 2028.

The Melbourne Martins' Grande Tour 2014

Our trip to Paris, London & Italy!

L'Tour Eiffel and Monet's garden

I have to fit in two days of adventures in today's entry as was too shattered to report in yesterday. We spent Easter Monday bateauxing (?) along the Seine on the 'Batobus' (ferry). We jumped on at Notre Dame and cruised our way leisurely past all the main sights such as the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay and up to the Eiffel Tower.

180_71FC5F1F2219AC68172CDE4B84FC99AB.jpg

After collecting our 'skip the queue' tickets we ascended to the first level where the view was pretty impressive.

Even looking up!

733D0E892219AC681776581DC5AA3D8C.jpg

We then took the lift up to the top where the entire beautiful city of Paris was laid at our feet.

Here's a collage of our impressions of L'Tour:

On reaching the bottom again the girls celebrated with a gelato from one of the many stalls.

7201C6CF2219AC6817050BAB73292CAD.jpg

We then jumped back on the ferry and disembarked to wander around St German du pres, having lunch at a nice little brasserie named Du pres de Clerc. Many frites were scoffed!

On the way back we walked over 'Love Lock Bridge' where thousands of couples have professed their love by fixing locks with their names. Quite a sight!

733F01FC2219AC68173180BC8042E12E.jpg

We all crashed pretty much on our return to the apartment after a very busy day!

On Tuesday we met up with Olivia's school friend Tayla and her dad Jan over brunch and after a wander around the left bank we jumped on a bus trip to Giverny to see Monet's garden which was in glorious bloom.

720965622219AC68179577EB2A551C84.jpg

A passing storm set off the frogs with a chorus of croaking on the famous lily pads.

72062A2B2219AC681756339665C62042.jpg

After arriving back in Paris we grabbed some dinner in St Germaine and jumped back on the Batobus to cruise past the Eiffel Tower lit up like a Roman candle before heading back to the apartment for some kip.

While it attracts a million people on a yearly basis, it is a little known fact that clicking a picture of the Eiffel Tower at night is illegal. This strange copyright law was passed down years ago, however, after the installation of lights in 1985 gave rise to another law stating that any photo/video showing the monument with visible lights is a violation on its own. Since France doesn’t have general freedom of panorama, the photo of the Eiffel Tower at night can only be published with prior permission.

Taylor Swift honors Melbourne crowd after celebrating major ‘Eras Tour’ milestone

Taylor Swift is still hitting milestones nearly two decades into her career.

Swift resumed the international leg of her “Eras Tour” on Feb. 16 in Melbourne, Australia. The “Anti-Hero” singer performed three nights in a row at Melbourne Cricket Ground for a whopping 96,000 fans each show.

She celebrated the moment at the beginning of her concert on Feb. 18, addressing the crowd with a short speech during her “Lover” era.

“96,000 people the first night, 96,000 people the second night, 96,000 people tonight,” Swift said in a video shared by a fan on the social media site X. “Those are all the biggest shows I’ve ever played on a tour and you did it three times.”

She continued, adding, “The math is that it’s 288,000 people in three nights. Melbourne, you are the love of my life.”

“I cannot believe you, what have you done?” she said. “It’s just incredibly nice to do for someone, make them feel welcome like that.”

During her first night in Melbourne, one fan captured the moment Swift appeared in awe of the sheer size of the crowd of nearly 100,000 fans.

“This is the biggest show that we have done on this tour or any tour I have ever done,” Swift said in the clip shared on X . “So yeah, that’s the version you get of me tonight, the version that’s actually completely starstruck by the fact that so many of you wanted to hang out with us on a Friday night in Melbourne.”

After playing her final show of 2023 on Nov. 26 at Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Swift hit the road again on the “Eras Tour” with four nights in Tokyo starting Feb. 7.

Following her stint in Tokyo, Swift reflected on the experience on Instagram , writing in part, “Those 4 shows at Tokyo Dome were so wonderful.”

“I’d missed you all so much and loved being on stage frolicking around with my fellow performers and band again,” she added. “Thank you to everyone who lives in and around Tokyo, and everyone who traveled far and wide to be there with us.”

After taking her final bows in Tokyo, Swift jetted off to Las Vegas to cheer on Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs as they became Super Bowl champions once again.

Swift’s “Eras Tour” will continue internationally through August, aside from a break for much of March and all of April. The break coincides with the release of her new album “The Tortured Poets Department” on April 19, which she announced on stage while accepted her 13th Grammy Award.

All I can say is location, location, location . We had a Eiffel Tower view room and we’re upgraded to a suite (104) all I can say is spend the money on a balcony with the tower view. It’s worth every cent! I would say this is where I want to stay again, why? Sitting 3-4 times a day admiring the tower on my balcony as we have breakfast, watching the light show….spectacular view. Our tour to palace of Versailles was from the hotel as the meeting point. When we did the hop on hop off bus stop 8 & 9 is here and lastly we could walk to our river cruise. Very convenient . Restaurants all in meters from the hotel and a supermarket We didn’t eat here or got to the bay on level 10. Staff were helpful in every aspect. I could not fault anything as we are sad to leave

The location was fantastic! We had a balcony and an awesome view of the Eiffel Tower. It was an easy walk to the ET as well as to the hop on / off bus. Also really close to Le Pont de Dir-Hakeim Bridge where we had to meet for a dinner cruise along the Seine. The hotel was also the meeting point for a number of tours including the Claude Monet Gardens tour and the Versailles Palace. The Australian Embassy was also in the same street. Across the road was a stadium where there were numerous events during our stay. The hotel itself was really nice and service was exceptional. The Hotel Restaurant was first class with regards to service food and ambience. Breakfast was a treat as well. The room was a good size given it was in the city. The balcony made it that much larger. We had a king size bed which was really comfortable. I like soft and it really was. The bathroom was really generous in size and modern with plenty of bench space. It did get busy in reception quite often but why wouldn't it. It was a top location! I would definitely stay again if given the choice.

We booked Pullman Eiffel Tower back in January. Initially, we were a little apprehensive due to a few of the negative reviews but we took our chances and glad we did!!!! Everything and I mean everything from the minute we arrived to the minute we left was absolutely phenomenal! We arrived and were on a tight schedule. Staff realized that and helped us get checked-in quickly (the hotel was so busy), stored our bags so that we could start our excursion just as we planned within 30 minutes of our arrival and checked in with us every morning if everything was ok. The view from our room was breathtaking especially at night and the breakfast buffet was like nothing we have seen before. We expected a small set-up like other hotels but the Pullman Eiffel Tower took it to the next level with a breakfast buffet like we have never seen before including a fruit cart and a honey comb with fresh honey dripping on it!!! The croissants and baguette were straight out of the oven, a spread of cheeses, Jambon, meats, chicken, waffles, pancakes, omelette s, sausages, cereal, eggs, nuts and I am sure I missed more than half of it!!! The room was clean, fresh and the beds were so comfortable. They had our daughter’s extra bed ready within minutes of receiving our key just like they said they would and we didn’t have to call and remind them. We had a great time in Paris and are already thinking about planning our trip next year. Thank you Pullman Eiffel Tower staff for a job well done and a service superb!!

I was completely unhappy and dissatisfied. This was my birthday evening I had been waiting months excited about staying at this hotel. The nonchalantness of the staff and management is crazy. Seems this hotel is more focused on the location being near the Eiffel Tower, not service and comfort. The experience I received and customer service was terrible ruined my birthday evening. If that wasn’t enough I requested my invoice received someone else’s with their stay and information. At there rates it absolutely was not the experience I was expecting. To say unhappy with quality of my stay is an understatement.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. We deeply regret to hear that your birthday evening stay wasn't as enjoyable as anticipated. We apologize for any perceived nonchalantness from our staff and management. Rest assured that we are committed to ensuring that every guest receives attentive and personalized service. We apologize for the invoicing error. Can you contact us at [email protected] for a new invoice. Again, we apologize and we hope to see you again in an other Accor hotel.

My recent stay at this hotel offered a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower, which was undoubtedly the highlight of the experience. The sight of the iconic landmark illuminated against the night sky was truly mesmerizing and made for unforgettable moments. However, I must admit that my overall impression was slightly dampened by the lack of friendliness from some of the hotel staff. While not all encounters were negative, there were instances where I felt the staff could have been more accommodating and welcoming.
