Regions of the Netherlands

The Netherlands may be small, but it packs in a huge variety of landscapes, from the olive-green canals of Amsterdam to the wild sandy beaches of the Frisian Islands . There’s a stack of art, too, from Rembrandt to Van Gogh, as well as an army of great bars and lively nightlife. Whether seeking the familiar or obscure, use our map of the Netherlands below to plan your trip.

Most visitors will head straight to Amsterdam, where you can lose yourself in the refurbished, world-beating Rijksmuseum or drift away in a mellow coffeeshop – if only with a delicious hot chocolate. Then there are Amsterdam’s waterside charms, from urban beaches to canals, and streets to wanter in Grachtengordel, Amsterdam’s prettiest district. If you’re feeling adventurous, hire a guide and attempt Wadlopen , a popular but tiring mudflat hike, along the North Sea Coast.

If you are planning to travel, check out the Netherlands itineraries , read more on the best places to go in the Netherlands , learn about getting there as well as the best things to do and where to stay once you are there.

Your Trip to the Netherlands: The Complete Guide

tourist map holland

The Netherlands is a beautiful country with glorious national parks, picturesque windmills, and romantic canals all waiting to be explored. Cyclists will feel right at home in a country where there are more bikes than people while history, art, and architecture lovers will have plenty of sights to pique their interest. Plus, the cannabis is legal, and cheese and beer are celebrated; what’s not to love? This guide will help you plan your trip to the Netherlands from start to finish.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: Being a Northern European country, the Netherlands doesn’t experience much extreme weather, however rain is common all year round. During the depths of winter, the temperature can drop down to 35 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius), whereas in July it only makes it to 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) (66 degrees F). On any given day, the weather can quickly switch from sunny to rainy and back to sunny again and, being a flat country, the wind can feel quite strong. For more information, read our complete weather and climate guide for the Netherlands .

Language: Citizens in the Netherlands speak Dutch as their first language, but almost everyone speaks at least some English and many are fluent, making communicating in the Netherlands easy for English-speaking tourists.

Currency: Euros.

Getting Around : The NS rail system in the Netherlands is fairly clean, modern, and runs on time. If you’re traveling around the country and want to do so on your own time, it’s easy to hire a car from Schiphol (the Netherland’s largest airport) and in Rotterdam. In the country’s big cities everyone tends to travel by bicycle, which are easy and affordable to rent. Uber is available in the Randstad area (covering Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht), as well as Eindhoven, Haarlem and ‘t Gooi. You can see where in the Netherlands that Uber is available on their website .

Travel Tip: The cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam have the metro, trams, and buses, while The Hague and Utrecht offer buses and trams to get around. In each city, you can buy day tickets that allow you access to all modes of transport.

Things to Do

The Netherlands is famous for so many things, from canals and clogs to windmills and tulips, so it can be hard to decide what to do while there. A visit to the country wouldn't be complete without taking a boat tour and winding your way through Amsterdam's waterways. It's also well-worth hiring a bike like a local and heading to Zaanse Schans , a picturesque village with beautiful traditional windmills.

  • If you find yourself in the country in spring, you should take a trip to Keukenhof. The park welcomes over one million visitors each season and you'll be greeted by seven million blooms including the iconic Dutch tulips.
  • Love being by the water? In summer, be sure to check out the beach clubs at Zandvoort or Noordwijk for instant Ibiza vibes.
  • A trip to Amsterdam is all about balance. Learn about one of the most famous Dutchman at the Van Gogh Museum , then head to a coffeeshop (a cannabis cafe).

Explore what else this country has to offer with our articles on the best things to do and how to spend a week in the Netherlands .

What to Eat and Drink

Dutch cuisine is tasty and very reminiscent of home cooking. There is bitterballen , a thick stew which is breaded and fried, a perfect partner to a small beer (for which the Netherlands is also known). Stamppot is a traditional comfort food consisting of boiled, mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables and sometimes meat. Stroopwafels, a large caramel-filled wafer cookie, are plentiful and can be bought plain or dipped in melted chocolate and loaded with different toppings like marshmallows or hazelnuts.

Then there are Dutch cheeses, which are typically relatively hard and fairly mild like gouda and edam. You can visit the cheese market in the town of Gouda or head to the cheese market in Alkmaar, the oldest cheese market in the Netherlands.

As for the beers we mentioned, Jopenkerk in Haarlem is an old church that has been converted to a craft beer brewery and restaurant, where you can take a tour, taste the beers, and stop for lunch. Alternatively, head to Amsterdam and hotfoot it to the old Heineken Brewery (now a museum) if you want to see how a household name beer is brewed. More into wine? Take a tour and have a tasting at Amsterdam's own winery.

If you're more interested in gourmet fare, the Netherlands has a variety of Michelin-starred restaurants, including three-Michelin-starred De Librije in Zwolle and Inter Scaldes in Kruiningen.

Want more in-depth information on Dutch food? Check out our guides to the top foods and dishes to try in the Netherlands , plus the best places for craft beer .

Where to Stay

Most first-time visitors head straight to Amsterdam which is the country's capital and most popular city welcoming 20 million visitors in 2019 (compared to one million residents). From here you can take day trips to Utrecht, Haarlem, The Hague, and Gouda. You can also get to Rotterdam in a day, but this city, known for its contemporary art and architecture, is worth spending a few nights in. Plus, from Rotterdam you can reach Tilburg, Breda, and both the De Biesbosch and Drunen National Parks.

Interior design in the Netherlands is incredibly chic, and there are plenty of luxe hotels to stay in such as The Dylan in Amsterdam and Hotel Pincoffs in Rotterdam. Airbnb is available around the country, in fact you can even find some houseboats on the site, if you’re looking for somewhere different to stay.

Getting There

From the U.S. you can fly to Schiphol airport on various airlines including American Airlines, British Airways, and KLM. You can also fly into Rotterdam, but flights can be limited and more expensive. It could work out cheaper to fly to Amsterdam and travel by train to Rotterdam, which costs around 18 euros per person.

You can rent a car but parking in the Netherlands, especially in the bigger cities, is incredible expensive. If your hotel doesn’t have free or affordable parking, it’s best to get around on a bike, tram, bus or metro. The country isn’t huge—it’s roughly half the size of South Carolina—so it’s easy to get around on public transportation.

Culture and Customs

The Netherlands is a safe country where most people speak at least some English.

You generally only tip waiting staff if the service was good or exceptional, at which point you tip around 5 to 10 percent. Otherwise, you can round up the bill or leave the change.

Typically, Dutch people are quite formal which can come across as being a little standoffish.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Want to travel the city freely? Get a GVB (in Amsterdam) or RET (in Rotterdam) day pass, which allows you to travel on most buses, trams and the metro, from eight euros.
  • Taxis from the airports are expensive but don’t be tempted to hop in an unlicensed cab. Uber operates in the country and costs around 30 euros from Schiphol to Amsterdam. From Rotterdam airport to the city center is around 16 euros.
  • Museums are not free in the Netherlands, so if you’re heading to Amsterdam and want to head to some of the cultural sights it’s well worth buying an I amsterdam City Card (starting at 65 euros for 24 hours). It gains you free entrance to the best museums and galleries, free travel within the city limits, and discount on food and a canal cruise. With or without the card, if you want to visit the Van Gogh Museum, be sure to book your slot in advance as it sells out fast. You can only visit the Anne Frank House by booking online beforehand.
  • There are 20 National Parks dotted all over the country that are beautiful, free to explore, and rich in various fauna and wildlife. Head to one for a walk or do as the Dutch and cycle.

Maps of the Netherlands: 9 maps to understand the Dutch landscape

These maps make geography 'leuk' 🗺️

Liana Pereira 🇱🇰

It’s a running joke that Holland is flatter than a stroopwafel, but have you ever wondered what maps of the Netherlands reveal about the landscape? 🤔

From cities more densely packed than passengers in an NS train to wide expanses of open countryside where cows go boe , there’s much to explore.

Here are some fascinating maps of the Netherlands to help you tour this gorgeous country, whether you’re a tourist, adopted Nederlander , or just a curious Dutchie!

1. The Netherlands on a map of Europe

map-of-the-netherlands-within-europe

Sandwiched between Denmark in the north and Belgium in the south lies the tiny country of the Netherlands.

A haven for lovers of cheese (and fans of watching people do crazy antics on bikes), this Western Europe country is best known for its innovative and progressive society.

2. A map of the Dutch provinces

Image-of-a-colorful-map-of-the-netherlands-and-its-provinces

Proving that good things come in teeny-tiny packages, the European part of the Netherlands is divided into 12 provinces:

  • North Holland: home to sights such as the stunning windmills of the Zaanse Schaans, the cheerful Spaarnestad of Haarlem , and Amsterdam (of course!)
  • South Holland: a bustling province best known for The Hague’s International Court of Justice, the quaint university town of Leiden , and Europe’s largest seaport in Rotterdam
  • Utrecht: sharing a name with its capital city, Utrecht , this province is home to dreamy historic sights like Kasteel de Haar , the largest castle in the Netherlands
  • Zeeland: popularly known as New Zealand’s namesake , it also boasts one of the best storm barriers in the world, the Delta Works 🌊
  • Gelderland: the Netherlands’ largest province by landmass contains sights ranging from Nijmegen , the Netherlands’ oldest city, to the unspoilt beauty of the Hoge Veluwe
  • Flevoland: a marvel of Dutch engineering, the Netherlands’ youngest province was reclaimed from the sea, and features former islands like the UNESCO world heritage site Schokland
  • Groningen: best known for containing the rich gas fields of the north, it is also home to the vibrant student city of Groningen (yes, the city and province share a name!)
  • Drenthe: famous for its hunebedden (ancient burial mounds), this quiet province has a wealth of stunning sights , including the Dwingelderveld National Park
  • Limburg: its capital Maastricht is a bustling student hub, but the Netherlands’ only ‘mountain’, the Vaalserberg, really puts it on the map 🗻
  • Overijssel: tourists may flock to this province for Giethoorn, the Venice of the North, but the lively cities of Zwolle and Enschede also beckon for a visit
  • Friesland: birthplace of the Elfstedentocht , it also boasts its own official language (Fries) and the gorgeous Wadden Islands
  • North Brabant: the birthplace of Van Gogh, it’s home to places ranging from innovation hub Eindhoven to student city Tilburg

Many Dutchies tend to live in the Randstad , an area in the centre of the country that is made up of cities in the provinces of North Holland, South Holland, Flevoland, and Utrecht.

3. Is Holland crowded? A population density map of the Netherlands

netherlands-population-density-2020

With an estimated population of over 17.8 million people jam-packed als haringen in een ton (like fish in a barrel) in its 41,450 square kilometres of area, we’d say that the Netherlands is quite a densely-populated country.

In fact, CBS (the Dutch Bureau of Statistics) predicted that this humble land of cheese and clogs will hit the 18 million population mark as early as 2024. That’s a lot of people in a small area!

However, the majority of the population is concentrated in the Randstad, resulting in bustling cities but a quiet countryside.

4. Map of the Netherlands below sea level

map-of-the-areas-of-the-netherlands-below-sea-level

Let’s just say that there’s a reason why the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg have historically been nicknamed the ‘Low Countries.’

About 26% of the Netherlands lies below sea level, and the lowest point in the country is the Zuidplaspolder at around 6.76 metres below sea level in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel.

That means that, without the Netherlands’ extensive system of dikes and dams, if you were to stand in front of Amsterdam Central Station, the sea would be well over your head — help!

5. The Dutch mountains: a topographic map of the Netherlands

topographic-map-of-the-netherlands-in-several-shades-of-blue

Although most of the country is as flat as a pannenkoek (pancake), the Netherlands does have one major point of elevation: the Vaalserberg.

READ MORE | Did you know there were mountains in the Netherlands?

This ‘Dutch mountain’ is just a smidge over 322 metres tall, making it taller than three Statues of Liberty (who stands at a more modest 90 metres herself). 🗽

However, if we take the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands into the equation, the highest point is actually on the Caribbean island of Saba, where the summit of Mount Scenery, an extinct volcano, is a steep 887 metres tall.

6. Dutch land reclamation efforts: mapped

[GIF] Land Reclamation in the Netherlands 1300-2000 (Individual Images in Comments) [500×621] from MapPorn

Though reclaiming a whole province ( hoi , Flevoland 👋) from the sea was bloody impressive, it barely scratches the surface of what makes Dutchies true masters of the elements.

The Dutch are considered masters of water management — after all, God might have created the world, but the Dutch created the Netherlands. 😉

7. Bike paths in the Netherlands

map-of-bike-paths-in-the-netherlands

With approximately 23 million owned (and frequently stolen) bikes by 17.8 million Dutchies, we can definitely see why the Netherlands has mapped such a robust system of bike paths.

The map of bike networks in the Netherlands shows the Dutch commitment to biking — not just from the people, but also in terms of government infrastructure.

8. Mapped: the difference between Holland and the Netherlands

In case you didn’t know, Holland & the Netherlands are not interchangeable from MapPorn

Despite often being used synonymously (and cheers of Hup Holland Hup whenever the country competes in a match ⚽️), Holland and the Netherlands don’t refer to the same area.

“Holland” comprises the provinces of North and South Holland, whilst “the Netherlands” refers to the country as a whole.

9. Map of the Caribbean Netherlands and Dutch constituent countries

Map of the Netherlands Antilles

If you thought the Netherlands was just a tiny European country with weed and windmills, think again. 😉

Squinting at a world map will reveal three tiny islands in the Caribbean that also belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba.

These are considered special municipalities of the Netherlands located overseas and can take part in Dutch and European elections.

In addition to the previous tiny islands in the Caribbean, you’ll find a further three islands on a map of the Dutch Caribbean.

map-of-curacao-in-the-kingdom-of-the-netherlands

These are the Netherlands’ constituent countries: Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten .

Unlike municipalities, these countries are relatively autonomous (they even have their own parliaments), though they depend on the Netherlands for things like defence.

Well, there you have it: an exploration of the Netherlands’ landscape through a fascinating collection of maps.

Which was your favourite map of the Netherlands? Tell us all about it in the comments below!

Maps in the Netherlands: frequently asked questions

Is the netherlands crowded.

While the whole country of the Netherlands has only the 27th highest population density in the world, the capital city of Amsterdam houses 4,439 people per square kilometre. In comparison, Hong Kong has 6,789 people per square kilometre. Many internationals find that the Dutch cities are more crowded than they’re used to.

Is a part of the Netherlands really below sea level?

Approximately 26% of the Netherlands lies below sea level, meaning that quite a bit of the country would be underwater if it weren’t for the Dutchies’ extensive system of dikes.

What is the lowest point in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands’ lowest point is the Zuidplaspolder near Rotterdam, which sits at over 6.76 metres below sea level.

Does the Netherlands have mountains?

Surprisingly, it does! The European part of the Netherlands is home to the Vaalserberg, which is a little over 322 metres tall.

Whilst not the most physically impressive sight on the horizon, it’s still over three times as tall as the Statue of Liberty.

Meanwhile, the Caribbean Netherlands boasts Mount Scenery — an 887-metre-tall extinct volcano.

Does the Netherlands have more bikes than people?

The Netherlands has a whopping 23 million bikes for 17.8 million people. Now that’s a lot of fietsen (bikes)! 🙌

How many provinces does the Netherlands have?

The Netherlands is often incorrectly referred to as Holland, and is one of the most vibrant and interesting countries in Europe. Known for its eclectic capital city of Amsterdam, the Netherlands is far more than just canals and museums, and if you venture further afield you will find picture postcard pretty towns as well as dynamic cities like Rotterdam and The Hague.

Due to its relatively small size it is easy to visit the Netherlands fairly quickly and to see a lot of the country in a short space of time. Getting out into the countryside is often one of the highlights of a trip for many, especially if you visit famous areas like the traditional villages that are filled with iconic windmills and tulips. One of the best ways to take in the scenery is by bicycle and fortunately much of the Netherlands is flat which means you can easily navigate the landscape and enjoy the great Dutch outdoors.

Similar to many other cities that sit over water such as Venice, Amsterdam has a vibrant canal system.

The pretty waterways are one of the best loved attractions in Amsterdam and you can explore the idyllic routes by taking a boat tour or a water taxi that lets you hop around a range of locations.

If you don’t want to take to the water then you can still enjoy the canal sights with a leisurely stroll along the banks.

12 Most Beautiful Regions in the Netherlands

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on February 5, 2024

Renowned for its low-lying lands that lie behind an intricate and ingenious system of sea barriers, dikes, and dams, the Netherlands is a wonderful place to visit, with lots of picturesque countryside on show. While the stereotypical image of tulip-filled fields and farmland lined by canals and dotted with windmills and farmhouses certainly rings true, the country also has a long and scenic coastline for you to explore.

regions in the Netherlands

Although Amsterdam is undoubtedly the most popular city to visit in the country, cities such as Utrecht and The Hague are well worth visiting. A plethora of charming towns and villages are scattered about here and there, with Delft and Giethoorn – the ‘Venice of the North’ – being particularly fascinating. Let’s explore the most beautiful provinces in the Netherlands.

Drenthe

Lying in the northeast of the Netherlands bordering Germany , Drenthe is the least populated part of the country. Much of its landmass consists of endless countryside, with some hills, swamps, and forests thrown in here and there.

As is very rural and agricultural in nature, there aren’t many large towns of note besides Assen, which is famous for its yearly MotoGP race, and Essen, which is primarily known for its zoo.

What Drenthe does have in abundance, however, is lots of little scenic villages. Cycling between places such as Coevorden and Meppel, Roden and Zuidlaren makes for a delightful experience; everywhere you go, you are greeted with pristine countryside, and shimmering lakes lie dotted amongst its woods and forests.

flevoland

Although most of Flevoland’s territory was remarkably reclaimed from the sea in the 20th century, the low-lying region sees very few tourists, who instead head to neighboring Amsterdam or Utrecht.

While it may not boast the dazzling array of attractions that other regions in the Netherlands do, Flevoland is well worth exploring. Almere, the main city in the area, boasts lots of modern architecture, while Schokland and Urk (which used to be islands), and Lelystad, with all its naval history and land reclamation sites, are worth a visit.

As the region is almost entirely surrounded by water, Flevoland has plenty of lovely coastline along the Marktmeer and Ijsselmeer for you to explore, with some great bird and wildlife watching on offer, alongside its many different watersports.

friesland

Known for its glittering lakes, wide-open spaces, and unique language and culture, the sparsely populated Friesland has a very different feel to it from the rest of the Netherlands. This, along with its beautiful islands and lakes, is what makes it so worthwhile visiting.

Despite being subjugated by various powers throughout its history, Friesland still sports its own unique cultural heritage, and most people in the region speak West Frisian alongside Dutch. To learn more about its people, history, and customs, a visit to the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden – the capital of the region – is a must, while Heerenveen and Hindeloopen are also well worth checking out.

While its charming towns and villages are delightful to explore, Friesland’s main draw is its spectacular scenery. The Frisian Lakes and West Frisian Islands attract both nature lovers and outdoor aficionados. Due to the sheer amount of water, it’s a great place to go sailing, while in winter, ice skating is popular when the waterways freeze up.

Gelderland

Lying on the border with Germany in the east of the country, Gelderland is a popular place to visit among locals and tourists alike, as its scenic countryside is home to two of the oldest cities in the Netherlands.

Both Arnhem and Nijmegen are full of beautiful old churches, interesting museums, and lively centers for you to visit, with the latter boasting a wide array of cultural events and festivals, such as the Four Day Marches, which is the largest event in the country. In addition to this, several fascinating old towns are dotted about the region for you to enjoy, with Culemborg, Tiel, and Zutphen particularly worth checking out.

Gelderland’s other main draw is its breathtaking scenery. Both Hoge Veluwe and Veluwezoom national parks are delightful to explore, as scenic hiking trails and bike paths weave their way amid the beautiful woods, forests, and dunes. On top of all of this, Hoge Veluwe, the largest national park in the country, is also home to the Kroller-Muller Museum, which boasts the most extensive collection of Van Gogh’s artworks.

groningen

Centered around the city of the same name, Groningen in the north of the Netherlands mainly consists of rural areas, with lots of villages dotted about its many farms and fields.

Although Groningen, with its vibrant student life, historic old buildings, and pounding nightlife certainly dominates the region, it is well worth venturing further afield, as each part of the region has its own identity.

Tucked away among its countryside are various ‘borgen’ – or fortified villas – for you to check out, such as those in Leek, Slochteren, and Uithuizen, while lots of traditional windmills can also be spotted here and there. Completing the picture are canals and ‘hanging gardens’ in Appingedam, and the impressive sea dikes along the shores of the windswept Wadden Sea.

Limburg

The southernmost province in the country, Limburg makes up the eastern part of the historical region of the same name, with its namesake province located across the border in Belgium making up the western part.

In contrast to the rest of the Netherlands, Limburg is very hilly, so it attracts lots of hikers and cyclers, who meander through its rolling landscapes. Dotted about here and there are also some lovely old castles, with those of Arcen, Eijsden, Hoensbroek, and Valkenburg being particularly attractive.

The main attraction, however, is undoubtedly Maastricht. Widely considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands, this wonderful place has two gorgeous town squares, a wide range of fascinating museums, and a plethora of beautiful old buildings, cobbled streets, and impressive religious sites. Its lively Prince Carnival is something very special to experience.

North Brabant

north brabant

Bordering Belgium to its south, North Brabant has a different look and feel to the rest of the Netherlands; for much of its history, it was part of the Duchy of Brabant, which had a different religion and culture to the rest of the country.

Nowadays, these differences are not as evident as they once were, although the old fortified cities of Breda and Den Bosch still have certain Brabantine features, as well as monuments and museums dedicated to its past. Both Tilburg and Eindhoven are also well worth a visit; the former has lots of interesting historical and industrial sights for you to check out while the latter has some great modern architecture on show.

Away from its many cities with all their history and culture, North Brabant also has some wonderful countryside for you to explore. Biesbosch and De Groote Peel national parks are particularly delightful for their amazing wetlands and woodlands. The region also sports Efteling – the largest theme park in the Benelux – which has a host of fun and exhilarating rides and attractions.

North Holland

North Holland

Although most visitors never make it beyond Amsterdam , the country’s canal-filled capital, the rest of the region is full of beautiful countryside, with windmills and farmhouses lying alongside farmland, fields, and dikes.

North Holland is full of picturesque towns and historic sights, with Alkmaar’s cheese market, Enkhuizen’s scenic harbor, and the open-air museum of Zaanse Schaan among its most popular attractions. The largest of the West Frisian Islands, Texel, and Zuid-Kennermeerland National Park lend themselves perfectly to hiking and cycling, with lots of lovely scenery on show.

The undoubted highlight, however, is, of course, Amsterdam. Wandering around its cobbled streets or taking a cruise along one of its beautiful canals lined with impressive townhouses makes for a lovely day out in itself. With such astounding sights as the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum on show, Amsterdam’s infamous nightlife to explore, and a wealth of exciting and important historical and cultural sights on offer, the country’s capital really does have it all.

overijssel

Defined by the river Ijssel that runs through it, Overijssel is located in the east of the country bordering Germany, and most of its landscape consists of picturesque countryside.

Lining the banks of the Ijssel are many delightful, historic towns, with Deventer, Kampen, and Zwolle among its finest. In addition to these fascinating places, the picturesque village of Giethoorn, which is sometimes referred to as ‘the Venice of the North,’ has a mesmerizing array of canals and bridges for visitors to explore.

Away from its historical and cultural sights, Overijssel also boasts lots of great outdoor activities; canoeing or kayaking along any one of its waterways is a very popular pastime, while Weerribben-Wieden National Park is a nature lover’s delight for all of its scenic rural areas.

South Holland

south holland

While the fantastic flower gardens at Keukenhof may attract the most visitors every spring, South Holland is awash with great things for you to see and do; Delft and Gouda are among its most popular attractions due to their famous ceramics and cheese.

In addition to these pretty towns, you can also visit The Hague – ‘the judicial capital of the world’ – and Rotterdam, the second largest city in the country, which both boast contrasting yet equally delightful architectural styles. While the former showcases some wonderful historic and stately buildings, Rotterdam with its bustling port exhibits both cutting-edge and more industrial architecture as well as a wealth of great museums and cultural events. Leiden, a lively university town, is also loads of fun to explore.

While there are many more wonderful towns dotted about the region which are worth checking out, no trip to South Holland can be considered complete without visiting the traditional windmills at Kinderdijk as the landscapes are just so quintessentially Dutch in nature. Part of the Hague, Scheveningen on the North Sea coast, is the largest and most popular resort in the Netherlands.

utrecht

Despite being the smallest province in the Netherlands, Utrecht is also the most densely populated, although pockets of green nature can be enjoyed at Utrecht Hill Ridge and Vechtstreek, which is home to lots of majestic castles, regal estates, and expansive gardens.

Utrecht – the historic university town of the same name – is well worth visiting for its charming canal-filled center and laidback vibe. Amersfoort, the second-largest city in the region, also boasts a delightful medieval town center for you to wander around.

Away from its two major cities and natural sights, Utrecht also has some impressive historic fortresses at Bunnik, while Wijk bij Duursteede has the only windmill in the world which you can drive through, as well as some beautiful old castles on show.

Zeeland

Consisting of various islands and peninsulas that are connected by dams and bridges, low-lying Zeeland is protected from the North Sea by the ingenious engineering project that is the Delta Works. It is this series of sluices, barriers, and dikes that helped reclaim much of the land from the sea.

While Zeeland is mostly visited during the summer for its many beaches which sparkle when the sun is out, the region is also very popular amongst cyclists as it is so flat. Indeed there is lots of lovely coastline for you to cycle along, with some beautiful nature on show in Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe – the largest swamp in Europe.

Protected behind its many dikes and dams are some fantastic towns, such as Middleburg, Goes, and Sluis. The port towns of Terneuzen and Vlissingen make for great bases if you want to explore the windswept Dutch coast.

Maps + Travel

Known as a top vacation destination, Holland is conveniently located midway between Chicago and Detroit. Although it only takes less than 3 hours to reach us from either major city, you’ll feel like you’re in a different world!

About Holland

It’s both easy to see and hard to imagine that Holland, Michigan has its roots in the most solemn aspects of Dutch culture. Much of the religious conviction remains, as does the traditional Dutch architecture, and ambiance.
