Our 2024 Founder’s Trip has been a year in the making, specially crafted to visit parts of Africa not yet featured in Naturalist Journeys’ tours. Zambia and Zimbabwe have done a great job with wildlife conservation and recovery and take their rightful place among more well-known destinations. Our group on this three-week, two country safari is limited to just seven persons plus Peg Abbott of Naturalist Journeys and Zambia’s acclaimed birding guide Frank Willems. Join us on a spectacular wildlife safari to Zambia and Zimbabwe where we visit stunning national parks to see iconic African wildlife including Elephant, Leopard, Lion, Cheetah, Giraffe, Hippo, and so many more! Birds are prolific and colorful with new species appearing at each location. Feel immersed in the African landscape in our comfortable accommodations, often located right in the national parks, where you can view impressive mammals and birds right from the lodge. We begin in Lusaka, Zambia, followed by time spent in Kafue and South Luangwa National Parks for eight nights. Kafue National Park is one of Africa’s best kept secrets and we experience amazing game viewing by a variety of activities including game drives, boat, and walking safaris. We then move on to South Luangwa National Park, where the varying habitats and dramatic topography are home to many bird and mammal species, including the endemic Thornicroft’s Giraffe and Cookson’s Wildebeest. After exploring Zambia, we head to northern Zimbabwe, one of Africa’s most game-rich regions. We explore Mana Pools National Park and its variety of habitats that make it rich in bird species. It is also one of the best places in Africa to see African Wild Dog and other predators. We then have a dramatic change of scenery as we head into the Bvumba Mountains, bordering Mozambique, where we spend three nights in this birder’s paradise. After time spent in the mountains, we head to the Honde Valley to explore Nyanga National Park, a premier birding destination in Zimbabwe. Very few tours reach this location and Frank accompanies us for the full tour, a great treat due to his knowledge of the region’s birds, ecology, and wildlife. Our main tour ends in Harare, Zimbabwe, but we highly recommend continuing on the post-tour extension to visit the world-renowned Victoria Falls. We spend two days exploring the falls and learning about the flora and fauna in the area, enjoying traditional cuisine and culture, a gorgeous sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, and a visit to an Elephant sanctuary to learn about and observe these gentle giants.

Trip Itinerary

Itineraries are guidelines; variations in itinerary may occur to account for weather, road conditions, closures, etc. and to maximize your experience.

Sat., July 27      Arrival in Lusaka

Welcome to Zambia! Our tour begins in Lusaka, the capital and largest city in Zambia. Please plan to arrive at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) at your leisure. A driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to our comfortable lodge located outside the busy city. Settle into your peaceful chalet, situated on lush grounds with shady trees. Accommodations at Pioneer Camp (D)

Sun., July 28        Kafue National Park

We leave Lusaka and head to Kafue National Park, the oldest and largest (22,000 km2) national park in Zambia. The park is named after the Kafue River that cuts through it for 250 km and forms the beautiful Lake Itezhi-Tezhi in the south, which draws large herds of antelopes and Elephants. Kafue is mostly covered in Miombo woodlands, which consist of tropical grasslands, savannahs, and shrublands. Miombo woodlands cover much of central Africa with the most extensive stands occurring in Zambia. They are named after the oak-like miombo trees that dominate the area. In this habitat Racket-tailed Rollers are bold and vocal, a thrill to see and we can seek out Pale-billed Hornbill, Arnott’s Chat, and other specialties. Kafue National Park is one of Africa’s best kept secrets and has avoided mass tourism, which allows us to experience amazing game viewing surrounded by stunning landscapes.

The wildlife in Kafue is some of the richest in Africa. Breeding herds of Elephants and large predators have returned to the park after years of poaching in the 1980s and 1990s. Big cats including several prides of Lions, Cheetah, Leopard and Serval are present. Packs of endangered Wild Dogs can be seen if we’re lucky. Common species include Buffalo, Zebra, and Hippo along with up to twenty species of antelopes. Birds of Prey include Martial Eagle, Wahlberg’s Eagle, and Lizard Buzzard. Eurasian Hoopoe and Southern Ground Hornbill are often seen at close range to our vehicles.

Our lodge is located on the banks of the Kafue River in an excellent location for wildlife and game drives. Sunsets are incredible, and after dinner we often gather around a fire, listening to night sounds and trading conversation with other lodge guests. At mid-day breaks we can enjoy a dip in the infinity pool or birding on the grounds. Accommodations at Mukambi Safari Lodge (B,L,D)

Mon., July 29 & Tues. July 30           Kafue National Park

We spend our time exploring the spectacular landscapes and abundance of birds and mammals in Kafue National Park. With over 500 species of birds and 150 mammal species, it is an exciting two days. Our game drives offer a great opportunity to explore the vast park. We keep an eye out for the colorful Schalow’s Turaco on sycamore figs along with Malachite Kingfisher, African Green-Pigeon, Crowned Hornbill, delicate Böhm’s Bee-eaters, Wattled and Grey Crowned Cranes, Goliath Heron, Woolly-necked Stork, and many others.

What better way to connect with African nature than a walking safari! We head out with a local guide and guard to track animals and learn more about plant and insect life in the park. Immersing ourselves in the landscape, we listen and watch for birds as we walk through the same trails traversed by antelope and African Buffalo. This is a great way to spy little “bird parties” of Southern Cordonbleu, Red-billed Firefinch and Orange-winged Pytilia, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Brubru, Chinspot Batis, and beautiful Violet-backed Starling. We may find secretive roosting African Barred or African Scops Owls. Little Bee-eaters are common, and in woodlands we may find the beautiful Swallow-tailed Bee-eater as well.

We take a relaxing boat cruise down the Kafue River, floating past wading Hippos and drinking Elephants. Some of the largest Nile Crocodiles can be found along the riverbanks, which we view from the safety of our boat. This is also a great chance to see some of our more aquatic bird species such as African Finfoot, African Jacana, African Darter, and various colorful kingfishers.

Our safari lodge, located on the border of the national park, is situated right on the banks of the Kafue River. It is the perfect place to relax with a cold drink and gaze across the open landscape scanning for Impala, Elephant, or Hippo right from the verandah of the lodge. In the evening, enjoy gathering around the campfire.  Accommodations at Mukambi Safari Lodge (B,L,D)

Wed., July 31       Transfer to Lusaka

Today is a transition day between the parks. We make our way back to Lusaka and make some birding stops along the way. In the afternoon, we settle into our lodge, relax, and enjoy birding the lush grounds surrounding our chalets. Accommodations at Pioneer Camp (B,L,D)

Thurs., Aug. 1     Flight to Mfuwe & South Luangwa National Park

Today we embark on the next part of our safari! We have a short flight to Mfuwe where we transfer to our luxurious safari camp that is our home for the next three nights.

Our lodge is perfectly situated at the south entrance to the national park. This makes access for our game drives quick and easy. Our expert local guide takes us to the best locations in the park to spot wildlife. Lions, Buffalo, Impala, Bushbuck, and Puku are common. Wild Dog numbers have increased in recent years and sightings have become more common year-round. Leopards typically hunt at night and if we’re lucky, we spot one on our night game drive. South Luangwa National Park is known as the place to see Leopards and one of the few parks that allows spotlight night drives.

The birdlife in this park is phenomenal and we look for Southern Carmine and White-throated Bee-eaters that both nest in holes in the riverbank, brightly colored Lilian’s Lovebirds, Gray Go-away-birds, three species of cuckoos: Levaillant’s, Klaas’s, and African Emerald around the camp; Three-banded Plover by ponds and streams and Three-banded Courser in the grasslands. Elegant Grey Crowned Cranes join a host of large wading birds and Hamerkop. We may hear a noisy gang of Red-faced Mousebird or Green Woodhoopoe or discover low in the brush, noisy Terrestrial Bulbul. Kingfishers are plentiful, some associated with water and others with woodlands, including Giant, Pied, Gray-headed, Brown-hooded, and Woodland. Overhead we are alert for sightings of Tawny Eagle, Bateleur, African Harrier Hawk, and Banded Snake Eagle. And on our night drives we are on the lookout for the owls and nightjars that call this park home. Accommodations at Flatdogs Camp (B,L,D)

Fri., Aug. 2 & Sat., Aug. 3        South Luangwa National Park

We spend the next two days exploring the pristine landscapes and unique and abundant wildlife of South Luangwa National Park. Bordered by the Muchinga Escarpment to the north and west and the Luangwa River to the south, the park covers just over 9,000 square kilometers of varying habitats and dramatic topography.

South Luangwa National Park is home to many of the famous African mammals such as Lion, Hyena, Wild Dog, Elephant, and Buffalo, but perhaps the most unique species we may come across is the endemic Thornicroft’s Giraffe. Their distinctive patterns and slightly smaller size differentiate them from other giraffe species in Africa. In addition to the more than 100 mammal species, there are also some 470 bird species that have been found in the park.

Birds we are on the lookout for when out and about include Namaqua Dove, Swainson’s Spurfowl, Double-banded Sandgrouse, Spur-winged Goose, African Openbill, Cardinal Woodpecker, White-browed Coucal, Collared Palm Thrush, Purple-crested Turaco, African Gray Hornbill, and more. Lovely forest birds like Peter’s Twinspot and Sulphur-breasted Bushshrike are possible.

In the afternoons we return to our lodge to unwind. Enjoy a dip in the pool or relax and keep an eye out for Elephants, monkeys, and Hippos right from your porch. With no fences in the game management area, the camp is regularly visited by large herbivores. Besides the amazing wildlife of Zambia, we enjoy delectable meals while looking out over the scenic Luangwa River. Accommodations at Flatdogs Camp (B,L,D)

Sun., Aug. 4            Zimbabwe

We say goodbye to South Luangwa National Park and the Zambia portion of our safari today and head to Harare, in northeastern Zimbabwe. Today is mostly a travel day and we have included a charter flight to ease this transition that connects through Lusaka. Our elegant bed and breakfast has spacious rooms with large verandahs that overlook a lush garden oasis. We enjoy a mouth-watering three course dinner before turning in for the evening to rest up for the next part of our journey. Accommodations at York Lodge (B,L,D)

Mon., Aug. 5        Private Charter to Mana Pools National Park

This morning we take a private charter flight to Mana Pools National Park in northern Zimbabwe. Renowned as one of Africa’s most game-rich regions, the national park covers over half a million acres and 378 bird species. The Mana Pools are former channels of the Zambezi River, which borders the park to the north. A steep escarpment rising over 1,000 meters borders the park to the south. During the dry winter months, large herds of Elephant and Buffalo, along with Zebra, many antelope species, and Lion migrate here.

Our small, tented camp is located right on the banks of the Zambezi River, blending seamlessly into the bush while offering a comfortable experience. We enjoy evening campfires, relaxing time in the afternoon watching for Hippos in the river, and delicious catered meals. Accommodations at Goliath Camp (B,L,D)

Tues., Aug. 6 & Wed., Aug. 7        Exploring Mana Pools National Park

We spend the next two days exploring Mana Pools National Park via game drives, walking safaris, and canoe. We head out early for game drives, hoping to spot many of the mammals that call this park home. The variety of habitats in this huge park make it great for birding. We look for waterbirds along the Zambezi River and the pools. African Skimmer, Long-toed Lapwing, African Sacred Ibis, and a variety of herons, storks, and kingfishers are just some of the many birds we hope to see during our time here.

Some of the memorable birds include Malachite Kingfisher, Broad-billed Roller, Little Bee-eater, Crested Barbet, and African Golden Oriole. There is a grand mix of water birds, and good photo opportunities. Around camp we should see White Helmetshrike, Yellow-bellied Greenbul, Kurrichane Thrush and Pearl-spotted Owlet.

In the evenings, we enjoy a sundowner as we watch the sunset over the Zambezi River. Fiery-necked Nightjar sings us to sleep. Accommodations at Goliath Camp (B,L,D)

Thurs., Aug. 8           Transfer to Harare

We enjoy a last breakfast along the banks of the Zambezi River and wave goodbye to the Hippos and Elephants before making our way back to Harare via private charter flight that we have booked to ease our travel. We spend the afternoon relaxing at our bed and breakfast. Accommodations at York Lodge (B,L,D)

Fri., Aug. 9         Transfer to Vumba

Few tours venture to the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe and we are excited to head there today. We travel by road, birding along the way, to Vumba, located in the Bvumba Mountains near the border to Mozambique. These savannah-woodland dominated mountains offer a vastly different landscape and a chance to see many new bird species.

Our comfortable lodge, located in the mountains, is a birdwatcher’s paradise and a great location for finding the more secretive Southern African forest birds including several species endemic to these “Eastern Highlands”. Our cottages have amazing views into Mozambique and are set in secluded gardens. Accommodations at Seldomseen Lodge (B,L,D)

Sat., Aug. 10 & Sun., Aug. 11         Seldomseen & the Bvumba Mountains

The next two days are spent finding some of the region’s forest specialty birds. We look along cliff and forest edges for soaring Crowned and Long-crested Eagles. We listen for the deep foghorn like calls of the Buff-spotted Flufftail and hopefully catch a glimpse of the elusive Delegorgue’s Pigeon. Roberts’s Warbler and Chirinda Apalis are completely restricted to this mountain range. Among other highly range-restricted and attractive species are Swynnerton’s Robin and Orange Ground-thrush, both of which can be remarkably easy to find here. The delicate likes of Red-faced Crimsonwing and White-tailed Elminia add further flavor. Truly spectacular are the huge Silvery-cheeked Hornbill that roam the forest canopy.

Beyond birds, we put effort into finding the endemic and exquisite Marshall’s Pygmy Chameleon. These remarkable tiny creatures are superbly camouflaged, only detectable with a well-trained eye. Samango Monkeys—the race of which is endemic to the area—are the most commonly seen mammal here and can entertain you for hours with their antics. Sun Squirrels scamper about the surrounding forest and occasionally Blue Duikers and Bushbuck can be seen. We make an effort to spot the elusive Palm Civet at night. Accommodations at Seldomseen Lodge (B,L,D)

Mon., Aug. 12      Honde Valley & Nyanga National Park

Today we drive to the Honde Valley, one of the premier birding destinations in Zimbabwe. Our destination is at the western edge of the valley, Nyanga National Park, which is one of the oldest national parks in Zimbabwe. The highest point in the country, Mount Nyangani, is located in the central part of the national park. There are numerous streams and rivers in the park and hillsides are covered in dense pine and wattle forests. This area also has numerous tea plantations on the hillsides of the valley.

Our comfortable lodge is surrounded by lush forest, making it a fantastic birding location. Each room has a verandah overlooking the forest, creating a peaceful and relaxing setting. It has been called one of the best-kept secrets of Zimbabwe! Accommodations at Aberfoyle Lodge (B,L,D)

Tues., Aug. 13 & Wed., Aug. 14        Nyanga National Park

We spend the next couple of days exploring Nyanga National Park. There are several nearby waterfalls we can enjoy after a short hike. Our lodge is a birding hotspot and along with a local bird expert, we walk the trails and grounds looking for species such as Green-backed Woodpecker, Stripe-cheeked Greenbul, Yellow-bellied Waxbill, Augur Buzzard, and many others. Even Palm-nut Vulture have been known to occur on the golf course at the lodge. Guerney’s Sugarbird, Bronze Sunbird, and Malachite Sunbird are among the striking specials that grace the high-altitude grasslands, while Wailing and Wing-snapping Cisticola add subtle beauty.

Our lodge is situated by both forest and extensive tea plantations, a beautiful setting rich in biodiversity. In the evenings, we enjoy delicious meals prepared by the lodge’s excellent chef. Accommodations at Aberfoyle Lodge (B,L,D)

Thurs., Aug. 15     Transfer to Harare

Today we depart Nyanga National Park and head back to our familiar bed and breakfast in Harare. We relax in the afternoon. Accommodations at York Lodge (B,L,D)

Fri., Aug. 16      Departures or Victoria Falls Extension

After breakfast we head to the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) in Harare for flights home. (B)

Victoria Falls Post-Tour Extension

Fri., aug. 16 : victoria falls extension.

For those continuing on the extension, we take you to the airport for a short flight to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. You are met at the airport and taken to our comfortable accommodations located on the outskirts of town with spectacular views. After checking in, we set out on our tour of Victoria Falls. One of the world’s most impressive waterfalls at a width of one mile, the sight and sound of Victoria Falls leaves you filled with awe. A local guide accompanies us on our tour through the rainforest and gives us a brief history of the falls as well as detailing the flora and fauna that surrounds us. After spending a couple of hours in this beautiful and unique landscape, we head to town for lunch at an iconic restaurant with delicious food and staggering views. After a delectable lunch, we take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, which creates the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. There are endless photo opportunities against the often-spectacular African sunset. Flocks of birds skim the water, including the gracious Rock Pratincole, and we have the opportunity to see Hippo, Crocodile, and Elephant. As if our day couldn’t get any better with the spectacular Victoria Falls and relaxing sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, we end with a unique cultural experience and dinner at the Boma Dinner & Drum Show. Traditional Zimbabwean dishes, including a variety of game meats, is accompanied by entertainment from traditional dancers, the Sangoma (story teller), and a local fortune teller. Accommodations at the Victoria Falls Bed and Breakfast (L,D)

Sat., Aug. 17 : Zambezi National Park

We have an early breakfast in order to leave by 6:00 AM. This morning, we enjoy an exciting game drive in Zambezi National Park. The park borders the Zambezi River for approximately 25 miles and consists of habitats ranging from dense rainforest habitat, watered by spray from Victoria Falls, to mopane woodlands and the dry open grasslands of the Chamabonda Vlei. Large mammals found in the park include Elephant, Lion, Buffalo, and Leopard. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in the park. We explore this vast wilderness for an exceptional uncontrived bush experience! In the afternoon, we have a very unique opportunity to spend time and connect with Elephants. We learn about these enormous mammals, including their history and threats facing their populations. During a venture out into the bush, we spend time with these gentle creatures and witness the special relationship they have with their keepers. This is an experience you won’t soon forget! In the evening, we head deep in the heart of the Chinotimba township for a dining experience like no other. Dusty Road, located in the buzzing township, offers us traditional cuisine and atmosphere that is an experience not to be missed. We enjoy our last evening together and we share highlights and memories of the journey. Accommodations at the Victoria Falls Bed and Breakfast (B,L,D)

Sun., Aug. 18 : Departures

After an early breakfast, we depart for the Victoria Falls Airport and our flights home. (B)

Frank is Zambia’s leading ornithologist and ecologist. Being from Dutch origin, he worked with the Dutch ornithology trust SOVON after obtaining his MSc in Ecology from Nijmegen University. Most of his professional work focused on the breeding ecology and population dynamics of birds in the Netherlands. His involvement in Foundation WIWO focused on bird research and training projects mainly in Russia and Iran. ? He came to Zambia with his wife Inge in early 2008 to work with Kasanka Trust on the management of Kasanka and Lavushi Manda National Parks, as well as Shoebill Island Camp in Bangweulu Wetlands. Tasks varied from mammal and bird monitoring, supervising PhD studies on Shoebill, Kinda Baboon and Straw-coloured Fruit Bat, facilitating film crews and writing management plans, to anti-poaching activities, building scout camps and bridges, creating firebreaks, and filling potholes in the dirt roads. The very Bangweulu Shoebills prominently feature in BBC's monumental "Africa" production, alongside Kasanka's mega-colony of Straw-coloured Fruit Bats (the world’s largest mammal migration) and the eagles preying on them, both facilitated by Frank. Since late 2017 Frank and family, now based near Fringilla, Chisamba, run their own company Kigelia Solutions. Major projects since have included the Birds of Zambia app, a biodiversity survey of the Mafinga Mountains with the BirdLife partner BirdWatch Zambia, an NHK film production on African Skimmer, consultations linked to community conservancies in Mpumba, the creation and management of Kalwelwa Bushcamp in Mwinilunga, and the creation of Birding Zambia. Side activities include the function of ‘Zambian Bird Recorder’ and Technical Advisor of BirdWatch Zambia, and country rep for African Bird Club. Several of his free-time explorations have focused on remote and unexplored parts of the Mwinilunga district. The large evergreen forests he and others identified using Google Earth, prove to hold real surprises like Vermiculated Fishing-owl and Spot-breasted Ibis. Frank is determined to ultimately create a large conservancy to protect Mwinilunga’s rich biodiversity. ? From a young age, Frank has guided and trained people, in the Netherlands, Zambia, and many other countries. He loves sharing his passion for and knowledge of the bush. During his twelve years in Zambia, he guided numerous groups in numerous places, including tens of film crews and research groups, photographers and journalists.

The blank pages need to say “Visas” at the top. Pages marked “Amendments and Endorsements” will not be accepted.

Zambia: A visa is NOT required for U.S. Passport holders.

Zimbabwe: A visa IS required for U.S. Passport holders and is obtainable at the airports or other ports of entry.

As a precaution for lost or misplaced documents you carry on your person during travel, we highly recommend you keep hard and digital backup copies on your phone (either photo or PDF scan), as well as a hard copy left with your emergency contact at home. The recommended important documents to copy include, but are not limited to; your passport ID page, travel visa, the front and back of your credit card(s), the airline barcode on your luggage. This will greatly expedite getting new ones if necessary – we hope everyone will always keep travel documents close so that losing them will not be an issue.

General Health & Inoculations Information – Be Prepared!

We will share your health information with your guide. This information will be kept confidential but is very important as we want to be best prepared in case of a medical emergency.

Vaccinations: Bring copies of your current vaccination records with you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all travelers be up to date with routine vaccinations and basic travel vaccines (such as Hepatitis A and Typhoid) before traveling to any destination. Please check with your doctor for recommendations at least 4-6 weeks before departing on your trip.  Your physician may recommend other preventative immunizations like DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis), which is recommended every 10 years. Check the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) webpage for Traveler's Health , or reach them by phone at 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636).

Yellow fever: Zambia and Zimbabwe require a YF vaccination certificate if you have traveled through or originated travel from an area with yellow fever. Please consider this if you are traveling ahead of time. If you have a current yellow fever vaccination certificate, definitely bring that with you. If you don't, it is a vaccine that is highly recommended for any travel to Africa since requirements can change with an outbreak at any time.

Malaria: Even though you are here during the dry season, you do travel in Malarial-risk areas.  Your doctor is likely to recommend that you choose anti-malarial medications.

See the  CDC Yellow Book for additional Yellow Fever vaccine and malaria prevention information, by country.

Prescriptions: It is a good idea to pack any meds you take regularly in your carry-on luggage.   Bring an extra pair of glasses or contact lenses. Bring an adequate supply of any prescription medications you use, a copy of the prescription and a list of generic names of your medicines as “back-up” in case it is necessary to purchase drugs while abroad. You’ll want to keep medications in their original, labeled containers.

Allergies: To be prepared for environmental triggers to allergies or breathing difficulties, please bring your allergy and/or asthma medication(s).   If you have severe allergies talk to your doctor about carrying an EPI pen and notify your guides. It is also recommended to carry with you an up-to-date record of known allergies, chronic medical problems and Medic Alerts so that, if necessary, emergency treatment can be carried out without endangering your health.

Common Ailments: We recommend that you bring a travel-sized first aid kit and a supply of standard over-the-counter medications for prevention or treatment of common ailments (such as diarrhea, constipation, stomach upset, cough, congestion, head or body aches, insect bites and sunburn); as well as ointments, moisturizer, sunscreen, oral rehydration salts, band-aids, moleskin for blisters, cotton swabs, nail clippers, and tweezers, etc.

Weather & Climate

July is during the cool dry winter season of both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Expect temperatures ranging from the low 40s°F at night to high 70s°F during the day, though at times it can drop to near freezing at night. Days are generally clear and sunny. Light clothes to wear during the day with warm layers to add at night are recommended. Sun and dust protection are also advised.

Annoyances & Hazards

There can be mosquitos and other biting insects (including the Tsetse Fly), so long sleeves, long pants, and insect spray containing 20 – 30% DEET is a must. During the dry season, we generally have little insect life, but be prepared and don't risk it in case we encounter some. The sun is also very strong, so plan to protect yourself against it, too. Your guides will go over all the other biting (and exciting) critters to avoid when you arrive – most are rare finds.

It is also important to remember that there are many large predators, so always follow your guide’s directions carefully and thoroughly when in the field and at the lodges. They will not be letting you out of the vehicles often in lion country – one termite mound can hide a full-grown male! We also take precaution around elephants, but you will be able to get wonderful photos and have a sense of being very close. Animals DO enter and walk around the mobile camp area, they will discuss what to do, but it’s basically to remain very quiet and still in your tents, not always the easiest thing to do if an elephant is munching the acacia tree nearby. When your safety is of issue your safari guides may be firm and gruff – the message simply must come across and be understood; in the bush they are captains of us all.

Food & Drinks

Our camps and lodges pride themselves in preparing healthy and varied food for you. To be out early on a schedule to hit activity peaks for wildlife, they typically give you tea and coffee and some fruit and biscuits early for the morning game drive and you return to a lavish brunch. After brunch, there is a rest period, and you reconvene over tea with savory and sweet snacks before going out again. Dinner is typically after sunset, and cocktails are served ahead around the fire. We have the option to stop for “sundowners”, but we also keep in mind that this is the primo light of the day for photography and excellent for wildlife viewing, so expect on some days that we prefer to return to camp, freshen up and then do cocktails and dinner. A mix of both customs is nice.

Packing, Clothing & Laundry

Please, pack light! The included small charter flights have luggage size restrictions and weight restrictions. Checked luggage must be no more than 23 kg (50 lbs) and carry-on luggage must not exceed 5 kg (11 lbs).

Dress is very informal. You may wish to change for dinners, but casual dress is suitable at all locations.

Laundry services may not be available at all your lodges, so we suggest packing travel-sized laundry soap or soap "sheets" and expect to do hand laundry.

Camera gear, phones, laptops can all suffer from dust and there is plenty here. Have good protective cases and we suggest you bring a towel-size microfiber cloth (3 x 5 ft. approx. size) that you can quickly wrap over your gear as you are out on a dusty safari. A pillow case can be used as a quick and easy dust cover!

TRAVEL TIP: Imagine NOT getting your suitcase. Wear your most important shoes for the field and have one day’s clothing change (including a change of underwear!). And please DO NOT pack any essential medications, or your vital optics, in your checked luggage!

Spending Money

The official currency of Zambia is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMK). One kwacha is divided into 100 ngwee. By law all payments within Zambia can only be made in kwachas but many shops, hotels, lodges and restaurants that cater to travellers or foreigners will accept US dollars (you may receive your change in kwachas so keep the exchange rate in mind so ensure you get the correct value).  One helpful resource is: www.zambiatourism.com . The official currency of Zimbabwe is the Zimbabwean Dollar though the US dollar is commonly used. Bring crisp, unsoiled U.S. dollars in good condition in SMALL denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) for purchases and tipping. Bring large U.S. bills ($50 or $100) that will give you the better rate when exchanging to local currency.

Plan to get newer currency, you may have to alert your bank ahead or start planning ahead now. Please note that US bills must be 2007 and newer and 2013 and newer is the best. Make sure that bills are in good shape, torn or damaged bills will not be accepted. It is best to have smaller denominations. Visa is the most widely accepted credit card.

In larger cities an ATM can be the easiest way to change money if you wish to do so or need to replenish your supply; make sure you know your PIN number. You should also inform your bank and your credit card companies that you will be traveling outside the country to avoid a freeze on your account as many banks do this as a security measure when unexpected purchases are made.

Tipping has long been part of the African safari tradition and is expected. Our Naturalist Journeys guide can bring envelopes for the local guides, and most lodges have a prominent staff tip box. To avoid awkward situations, we give guidelines here for tipping, but please know that tipping is always voluntary and should depend on the kind of service given. In general, you tip only once, at the end of your stay at any location. You should tip when possible in cash, in local currency or USD. Tipping by credit card means a long wait for staff at lodges to get it and often no guarantee that they do.

Safari guides are tipped separately; this is the person from each lodge who coordinates your game drives and outings. The safari guide is the main person to make your safari successful, from finding wildlife to keeping you comfortable; the industry standard for the lead guide is $20 USD per day. If we have different guides on different days, they simply share this. The driver and tracker should be tipped at half of this amount. We will try to map out tips in more detail for you with the Schedule at a Glance document sent ahead of your journey.

You will find camp staff at the lodges well trained and eager to please, many of them live away from their families for long periods of time, and the gratuities are a big incentive to them with much appreciation. You interact mainly with the wait staff, but behind them is a whole team making it all happen from chefs to maids and cleaners, and security guards. The lodges have a “General Tips” box that you can put an envelope into at the end of your stay. For Camp or Lodge Staff to share, figure a range of $10-$20 per day, depending on how personal the service and the number of persons you interact with.

Cell Phones & Internet Service

If you plan to bring your cell phone, it is important that you know how to turn off your data or that you speak with your provider before the trip to purchase a temporary international data/calling plan, if you plan to use your cell phone during the trip. Wi-Fi may be available at lodges though there may be fees, and these are determined by how much data you use, so be aware of that if people are sending you photos, etc. There are free apps available on smart phones that offer free international calls and texts, and you may want to research this ahead of time and download them; we use WhatsApp frequently. If you use your phone for a camera, be sure to have a good pocket or secure place to put it, it is easy to slip off the seat of the safari vehicle!

Electricity

In Zambia the power plug sockets are of type C, D and G. In Zimbabwe the power plug sockets are of type D and G. The standard voltage is 220-230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. A power plug adapter and a voltage converter can be found online or at most electronics stores. Many people carry a universal adapter, to have options. More information is available at www.power-plugs-sockets.com .

Both Zambia and Zimbabwe are on Central Africa Time (UTC+2) all year long. Daylight savings time is not observed. A helpful website to help with international time conversion is www.timeanddate.com .

Please contact Naturalist Journeys by email at [email protected] or telephone at our office: (520) 558-1146 or toll free: (866) 900-1146 if you have any questions. Many thanks for traveling with us and we hope you enjoy your journey!

Pace & Protocols +

Pace of the tour & what to expect.

You will receive a Schedule-at-a-Glance and list of hotels (our eContact List) a few weeks before your departure. This will serve as an outline for each day and alert you to any recent changes made in the schedule or to our hotels, if needed.

Our journeys are set up to follow the rhythm of nature. Our focus is on birding and nature; we offer full, well-planned field days and often get up early for that magical time around dawn. We generally follow the published itinerary, but we stay flexible to the weather, wildlife opportunities and the interests of the group. Your guide will keep you apprised of the next day’s schedule at each evening meal, noting what to bring and what to prepare for. Questions and/or concerns are welcome.

The pace of our Naturalist Journeys tours is moderate; to fully participate you should be able to get in and out of vehicles several times a day, and walk 1-3 miles over uneven terrain.  It is important to participate with a flexible attitude as adjustments may be made in our schedule to make the most of our time in the field or for other purposes at your guide's discretion. We are not a “listing” bird company that drills down on target species, but at times we do wait for those special species unique to the places we visit. During the day, we take time to stop for photos and for educational opportunities to learn about conservation projects, landscapes, and geology. We appreciate other taxa as well as birds, with mammals often the biggest draw but plants and butterflies are also very popular. Our clients often lend their own expertise to the mix.

We like to make meals a fun and memorable part of the experience, too. Breakfasts are often at hotels, and we carry snacks, fruit, and water in the vans each day. Lunches are a mix of picnics in the field (weather dependent) and a chance to dine with locals at small cafes and restaurants. For dinner, we pride ourselves in our homework to keep up with the best choices for dining, choosing restaurants with atmosphere that specialize in local foods. On occasion we keep dinner simple to go back out in the field for sunset wildlife viewing or night walks. In some remote locations, our choices are limited. If you are tired, room service for dinner may be an option you can choose.

Naturalist Journeys International Trips: Guide Role

Naturalist Journeys supports ecotourism and the development of excellent local guides. Once we know our international partners and guides well, we can send out small groups working directly with these trusted partners, adding a Naturalist Journeys guide to assist the local expert when we have a group of 6-7 or more. This helps us keep your costs down while retaining tour quality. The local guide is your main guide. You can expect your Naturalist Journeys guide to be well-researched and often they are experienced in the destination, but their role is not to be primary, it is to help to organize logistics, help you find birds, mammals, and interesting other species in the field, keep reports, help facilitate group interactions, and to keep the trip within Naturalist Journeys' style. Local guides live in the countries we travel to, know the destinations intimately, and are often the strongest force for conservation in their countries. They open many doors for us to have a rich experience.

Smoking is not permitted in any vehicle or in any situation where the group is participating in an activity together, such as a vehicle excursion or a guided walk. Please respect all designated smoking areas at hotels and restaurants.

Transportation

As a courtesy to each other, we ask that all travelers please rotate seating. On international trips we may all be in one small bus, on some trips we are in vans, particularly the roomy Sprinter Vans when available. Some areas require us to be in smaller 4-wheel drive or safari vehicles. Rotation allows you to sit with different drivers and alternate front and back seating.

Photo Release & Sharing

We take many group photos and will share photos with the group. And after your tour, we will organize a chance to share photos via Dropbox or Google Photos. Please note that this is our policy and if you prefer to be excluded, we need to know ahead of your tour.

By registering for this tour, you agree to grant to Naturalist Journeys and its authorized representatives’ permission to record on photography film and/or video, pictures of my participation in the tour. You further agree that any or all of the material photographed may be used, in any form, as part of any future publications, brochure, or other printed materials used to promote Naturalist Journeys, and further that such use shall be without payment of fees, royalties, special credit or other compensation.

Travel Insurance

You are traveling in remote areas. Naturalist Journeys strongly recommends you have full medical and evacuation insurance from a company such as  Allianz , for all international travel. If you do not have medical coverage or evacuation coverage on your existing travel insurance policy or for some reason elected not to take that out, we advise getting an evacuation plan with Global Rescue ,  World Nomads , Medjet , Allianz (they can do evacuation only) or a similar company. These plans are typically $300-$400 for a year for multiple destinations. This coverage may be a part of a larger Travel Insurance policy but can also be purchased on its own.

Please contact Naturalist Journeys by email at [email protected] or telephone our office: (520) 558-1146 or toll free: (866) 900-1146 if you have any questions. Many thanks for traveling with us and we hope you enjoy your journey.

Packing List +

Please pack light.

For all of the journey, soft luggage is also much easier for us to pack than a more rigid hard sided piece, so if you have the choice, please use your soft luggage. Be sure to have your name and address on the inside of the bag, as well as on the luggage tag on the handle. Included small charter flight weight limits are 23 kg (50 lbs) for checked luggage and 5 kg (11 lbs) for carry-on luggage. It is very important to follow these requirements.

Be sure to pack your personal medication, airline tickets, passport, binoculars, camera, and other essential items in your carry-on bag. You will want a day pack for field trips, so this is an ideal carry-on. Please reconfirm your airline’s baggage weight and size restrictions about a week or so before departure.

July is during the cool dry winter season of both Zambia and Zimbabwe. Expect temperatures ranging from the low 40s at night to high 70s during the day, though at times it can drop to near freezing at night. Days are generally clear and sunny. Light clothes to wear during the day with warm layers to add at night are recommended. Sun and dust protection are also advised.. Check a weather website closer to your departure to better predict what the weather will be on your adventure.

WARNING ! As with several other African countries, Zimbabwe and Zambia are working to ban non-reusable plastic bags. We strongly advise against bringing any. If you wish to bring a bag for laundry, shoes, etc., we advise a lightweight nylon bag, packing cube, or reusable cloth tote as a substitute. We suggest a reusable toiletry bag in place of a Ziploc-style bag. Violations of the ban could result in fines, so please double-check your luggage before you leave!

Clothing & Gear

Dress is comfortable and informal throughout the trip. Dressing in layers is the best way to be comfortable. Lightweight long-sleeved shirts and long pants make ideal field clothing as they are more protective from sun and vegetation. Also, choose clothing you don’t mind getting dirty or muddy and things that are comfortable and easy to wear and launder. Prepare for dust.  *Seek an alternative to Ziploc-type bags - sealable,  reusable, 2-gal. tight-weave or garmet-type storage bag and microfiber towels is one option to protect your optics.  Several of our lodges and camps provide laundry service.

Note on clothing colors and insect repellent: We recommend muted colors of tan, brown, khaki, grey or green, as they are spotted less easily than white or bright colors, though camouflage clothing is not recommended, and in some countries, not legal to wear. It is possible to purchase field clothing permeated with insect repellent such as the Craghoppers Insect Shield collection. Another approach is to purchase Permethrin spray (online or from REI) to treat your field clothing and socks before your departure.

Packing List:

  • Lightweight long pants, 3-4 pair
  • Light weight long-sleeved shirts, 2-3 (loose fitting keeps you cool and are great to layer over T-shirts or sleeveless shirts for staying cool)

In this park, large herds of elephants, buffalo and plains game provide numerous photographic opportunities. 420 species of birds have been recorded in the park, and if we are lucky, we may even be able to see some of the elusive predators. As the wildlife comes down to drink at the waterholes, these are also good opportunities for photography. Onward Travel Plans

Due to circumstances beyond our control while on tour (such as border crossings, traffic, breakdowns and delays, etc), the end time on the last day cannot be guaranteed. Therefore we strongly recommend you stay the night and fly out the next day. Please consult with your booking consultant.

  • Pre Departure
  • Please make sure you read through your travel vouchers carefully and all your details are correct. If you do notice any errors please notify your travel agent in order to correct the incorrect details.

Airport Transfers & Hotels:

  • Some of the operating companies we work with offer airport transfers to your hotel. It is advisable to stay the pre night at the hotel from which your tour departs. This ensures that you will be on time for the departure as well as being present when the final briefing is given to the whole group of the tour.

Arriving early with time to spare can allow you to enjoy a day tour before your tour begins. Half day tours are safe and informative and relatively inexpensive. Should you be interested in this additional option please arrange this through your travel agent or operating guide upon arrival in Johannesburg.

Departure Briefing:

Your tour begins with a short meeting discussing the final tour arrangements & informing you of the day’s activities. Your voucher & insurance policy should be with you at this meeting. You will also be required to fill out an indemnity form. If you are unsure of anything this is the perfect time to ask.

Important Touring Tips:

  • The itinerary is a guide ONLY and is subject to change
  • There is a mix of different nationalities, ages and cultures on every tour
  • Space in the truck is limited – PLEASE DON’T BRING TOO MUCH LUGGAGE!
  • The tours are high adventure tours, so don’t expect European Coach tours or lodge safaris
  • The tours are often created in a circular route i.e. where one tour ends, another begins
  • The rate is the same throughout the year

What are adventure tours?

These are adventure tours perfect for people who enjoy camping and the outdoors. You get to experience the “real Africa” by camping out at night, sitting around the campfire, taking in beautiful scenery, visiting local shops and getting to know the locals.

What is a typical day?

A typical day on either your camping or accommodated Africa overland tour starts with an early morning wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee followed by breakfast. Campers pack-up their campsite while comfort travellers check-out of their accommodation and hit the road.

We set off to our next destination travelling through a vast variety of landscapes, making our own new memories with new friends. Each day in Africa offers a new experience from an early morning sunrise hike, quad biking, sky dive or guided nature walk. The options are endless!

We have shorter travel days arriving at our campsite by midday or early afternoon, to enjoy lunch before joining our afternoon activity or simply enjoying a relaxed afternoon at your own pace.

On our longer travel days an early start ensures an earlier arrival at our campsite. We stop off at scenic spots to stretch our legs and take in the scenery, before lunch is enjoyed at a shady spot en-route. A mid- to-late afternoon arrival at our campsite allows us to set up camp, enjoy a beautiful sunset and end the day sitting around the campfire, under the stars.

Our best advice: expect the unexpected as this is Africa! We travel mainly on gravel roads and poorly kept tarmac roads – both setting the pace at which we travel. We do our best to arrive at our next destination, safety is our number one priority and while our overland vehicles are comfortable and spacious, they are not sports cars!

What type of vehicles do we use?

  • A custom-built, comfortable, safe and self-sufficient Africa overland truck to withstand the rugged African terrain.
  • Various vehicles are used on varying tours, with each offering comfortable seats with ample leg room.
  • Each vehicle has large glass windows for uninterrupted views and perfect for game drives.
  • Smaller 4×4 land cruiser type vehicles are used for game viewing in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, due to the roads being tougher and too narrow for the overland trucks.
  • Each overland vehicle includes a passenger safe to safely keep money + passports + flight tickets + credit cards. The keys are kept with your Tour Leader who will advise of safety requirements in place concerning the safe.

Who is suited to go on an adventure tour?

  • Almost anyone can go on an adventure.
  • Some level of fitness is required due to accessing the vehicle and spending long days on bumpy roads (can take it out of you).

EAST AFRICA TOURS require a more adventurous, fearless attitude and are suited to a younger traveller. If you are planning to trek with the Mountain Gorillas or climbing Mount Killi you will need to have a higher fitness level.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A CAMPING OR ACCOMMODATED TOUR

Camping tours:.

A camping safari is for travellers who want a hands-on experience of Mother Nature. The guide(s) will do most of the work, but you will be required to assist with various tasks such as preparing the food, washing up, cleaning out the truck and setting up the campsite and your tent. If you dream of a lifetime African adventure, embark on a journey with us sleeping under the stars while listening to the sounds of wildlife in the distance.

We offer camping safaris suited to travellers who may prefer to travel in a younger group (aged 18 to 39). Or, you can choose a mixed age group (18 to 60). A camping safari must not be underestimated and will require active participation which means good health and a fair degree of fitness. We have a tour to suit what you have in mind, so please do not hesitate to enquire with us.

During an African camping safari you will stay in large two-man dome canvas tents which are spacious enough for two adults and your luggage. Or, you can opt to have your own tent by including the single supplement (valid on select camping tours).

Your tents are put up and taken down easily – your Tour Leader will show you exactly how to do this and help out when you are unsure. All tents are well-ventilated by means of a tent-door and window, covered with mosquito net. They also include a fly-sheet for the rain.

Most camping safaris include a sleeping mat (please do check with us upon enquiry). You need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towel. All meals are prepared at the truck and you will be required to assist with the preparation.

The African campsites are basic and comfortable and you will be able to upgrade your accommodation at most of the places, but this is subject to availability. Most have warm showers and flushing ablutions, while others may have natural ablutions. Some places visited are bush camps where there are no facilities.

Please be cautious when smoking and with throwing your cigarette butts anywhere. There is a no smoking policy on our overland vehicles, in the tents and around the kitchen area- this is for the comfort of all the travellers.

Accommodated Tours:

Accommodated safaris are ideal for travellers who prefer to experience African wildlife and adventure with extra comforts. You are surrounded by vast landscapes and wildlife, curiously roaming at your door-step. It is comfort, without the price tag!

Our accommodated safaris make use of a combination of lodges, hostels, bungalows, chalets, permanent safari camps, hotels and traditional huts. Our properties are ideally located at each destination for an authentic experience with incredible views.

We book Twin rooms if you are travelling with a partner or friend and Single rooms for single travellers (including single supplement). Most of the time we stay in 1-3 star properties with en-suite bathrooms in Southern Africa. In Eastern Africa we offer a combination of en-suite and shared bathrooms. In the case of shared bathrooms, you will be sharing with friends on your tour. Please bring your own towels as these are not always provided.

Select accommodated safaris include a camp assistant to help out with the smaller aspects of your vacation.

The standard of the properties varies along the trip. The Southern Africa properties are much more established than the East Africa accommodation. They vary from basic (but comfortable) to lovely properties. Due to the remote nature of the trips, accommodation choices are limited.

Distances and Road Conditions:

Our tours cover long distances so you can see significant amounts of Africa this means that there will be long days spent on the road often with nothing to look at except vast open plains. You can spend between 350km and 650km a day in the truck so it is important to be prepared.

What will you eat on safari?

Our Africa overland vehicles are fully stocked with dry goods at the start of each tour. We buy fresh produce (fruit and vegetables) almost daily to ensure fresh, good quality and tasty meals. Over the summer months fresh produce is not always available due to the heat and humidity, especially in East Africa and Mozambique – so we may have to skip tomatoes from lunch or opt for rice instead of potatoes at dinner.

Each Africa overland camping and accommodated tour include meals as per the itinerary. Often, we may only include breakfast and lunch, allowing you to enjoy dinner at a local market or restaurant. Drinks such as tea, coffee and fruit juice is included with every meal, but exclude bottle water, beer, soft drinks, alcohol etc. – these can be bought en-route or at your campsite bar.

We do cater for most dietary requirements (allergies, vegetarian, lactose-intolerant). Other requirements (gluten-free) may be more challenging on remote routes (i.e. East Africa) where starch is a stable-food in Africa. Please do speak to us about your dietary requirements and we will advise according to your trip. You will be amazed by the variety of tasty meals prepared on an open-fire!

Almost all your meals are pre-prepared over an open campfire or on the gas stove in your overland vehicle. All cooking equipment such as pots, pans, cutlery and crockery is included for you. Excellent hygiene standards are maintained at all times preparing food and washing up of kitchen equipment. Your guides will provide you with a separate washing up basin to wash hands in warm soapy water before and after each meal.

Our camping tours are limited participation tours, whereby we ask you to help out with daily chores (putting up / taking down tents) and help out your guides at meal times (rinsing, chopping vegetables).

So what are the meals like on tour? We have included a few meal options as a guideline:

Tea/coffee and juice + cereals + bread/toast + fruit. Take 2 fruits and keep one for a mid-morning snack. An occasional cooked breakfast (bacon, pancakes, eggs) is made when you have more time to allow for this (normally when you spend 2 nights at the same destination).

Juice + bread + cheese + cold meats + salads + fruit (make a sandwich for a mid-afternoon snack) Juice + fresh rolls + green salad (or rice salad or pasta salad) + fruit.

Tea/coffee and juice + chicken curry + rice, grilled or roast chicken + salad + garlic roll, grilled chicken + vegetables + salad, fish braai + salad, steak + veggies, pasta, stir-fry + rice, casserole, braai (barbeque) + salads + jacket potatoes, soup + fresh rolls.

Tea, coffee and cordial drinks are supplied with meals but other cooldrinks and alcohol can be purchased along the way.

What about children on tour?

  • Children under the age of 18 travelling must have their full unabridged, certified birth certificates.
  • Due to the nature of overland tours the minimum age limit is 18. Younger travellers (10 to 17) travelling with a parent(s) will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the tour, time of travel and tour availability. We do have select tours offering Family Departures, suited for children aged 10 to 17.
  • Privately arranged charter tours’ age limits will be assessed based on the route and type of tour you choose.

Please bear in mind that the Gorilla Trekking tours have a minimum age limit of 16 years.

Packing for your tour:

Packing sensibly is essential for your Africa Overland trip. One backpack and one daypack are needed and these can weigh no more than 25kg. A duffel bag is preferable as it will fit into the lockers on the truck, but you can also take a backpack with a compact, flexible, soft shell (without a hard frame). Please do not take suitcases. The airlines implement a 20kg per person limit on international flights for your luggage (your main bag) and a further 5 kg for carry-on luggage (your day bag). A good idea is to include a spare bag for curios that you may purchase, but don’t forget to include this in your weight for your trip home. A moneybelt is a useful item for keeping your money safe and hidden.

Take along comfortable, casual and semi-casual “wash & wear” clothes. Cotton is a good material for when it is hot, and fleece for when it gets cold. Pack clothes that don’t crease easily as the laundry facilities are limited. Find clothes that can be mixed and matched easily and are colour co-ordinated. A great item of clothing is zip-off pants. These double-up as shorts or trousers and are useful for when the weather changes. Reversible clothes are also very convenient and will help to reduce space in your bag.

Be sure to dress appropriately when crossing borders and visiting villages and markets. No bikini tops, bare feet or chests. Please respect the Islamic religion when visiting Zanzibar and some areas of Tanzania, Kenya and Malawi.

  • Dehydration is a common ailment on tour.
  • You should be drinking a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
  • It is preferable to drinking bottled water to avoid diarrhoea, but your guide will advise you as to whether you can drink the water or not.

How others can reach you:

  • Like with any 3rd world country you will encounter informal vendors offering you better rates than the banks. We suggest you don’t work with them for security reasons.
  • Please do not display your foreign currency in public.
  • A valid passport is required for all international travel.
  • Having all the necessary documentation for your trip is your own responsibility therefore you need to find out by your travel agent what the essential documents for the trip are in order to avoid any complications on tour.
  • Passports must be valid for at least 6 months after returning from your trip.
  • In certain cases foreign passport holders require entry, re-entry or departure permits and/or visas to enter a country.
  • Have enough pages for all visas, at least 2 pages free for every country visiting – the Border Security is strict with this rule
  • A copy of your passport should be given to your guides for safety reasons.
  • Must be valid for 6 months after the date of departure from Africa.
  • Avoid using more than one passport to avoid visa payments when travelling
  • Please note that visas are the responsibility of the traveller and African Overland Tours will not be held responsible for the traveller being denied entry should they not be in the possession of the relevant visas.
  • Ensure you have a valid onward/return ticket to leave the country when the tour ends, otherwise you need sufficient funds in your bank account.
  • Visiting the Okavango Delta, you may need a double entry visa for Namibia and or Botswana
  • Please note: Mozambique entry visas are NOT available at the border for nationalities that have a Mozambique consulate or embassy in their country of origin. For all nationalities that have a Mozambique embassy or consulate in their home country it is required to obtain a visa BEFORE arrival in Mozambique. For those nationalities that do not have a Mozambique consulate or embassy in their country of origin it is necessary to contact the Mozambique embassy or consulate which is located in neighbouring countries in order to obtain a visa.
  • We urge you to allow at least 3 months applying for all of your visas. We recommend that you use a visa service or your local travel agent for assistance, as applying for visas can take a lot of time and effort..

Medical Insurance:

  • Compulsory! No one will be allowed on a trip if you don’t have this. It is for your safety should anything happen while on tour (especially when in a remote location).

Travel Insurance:

  • It is compulsory to have comprehensive adventure travel insurance, on all overland tours. We require your travel insurance details upon booking your vacation, to include on the passenger list.
  • Most travel insurance policies do not include cover for adrenaline sports and adventure activities. These include white-water rafting, sky diving and bungee jumping. So double check your policy inclusions.
  • WorldNomads Insurance offer adventure travel insurance and, most importantly, cancellation insurance. We strongly recommend your travel insurance includes cancellation and curtailment insurance. The majority of tour departures are guaranteed (confirmed to depart) but in the unlikely event of a tour departure being cancelled, you would be protected.
  • In the case of credit card insurance, we recommend you check the fine print to ensure you have adequate cover as credit card companies offer a standard option. Sometimes, just for a simple problem, you may have to be airlifted to South Africa as many public hospitals in Africa are below western standards.

If you choose to use your credit card insurance, you will need to call your bank to obtain your policy details. This is how: • Phone your bank • Give them your Bank Card Number • They will ask you to verify your account • Then you need to ask for the insurance company name • Then you need to ask for the policy number • Remember to keep the telephone number you dialled

Single Supplements:

A single supplement is an additional charge you will pay for your own room. Single supplements are optional on camping tours, but compulsory on accommodated tours if you are a single traveller. Single supplements do not cover Activity Packages.

Optional Activities:

Optional activities are not included in the tour price because not everybody wishes to do them. Sometimes the activities are not available due to time, season or weather conditions

What is a Local Payment?

  • A number of adventure overland tours are made up of a Tour Price + Local Payment.
  • The Tour Price is pre-paid to secure your tour seat and include operational costs associated with each tour, such as; guide salaries, fuel, vehicle servicing, maintenance, road tolls and taxes.
  • The Local Payment is a portion of your overall tour cost paid on the morning of tour departure, in either US Dollars cash or ZA Rand cash (tour depending). It includes “on tour” expenses which cannot ordinarily be pre-paid such as: food, camping, national park entry, included activities.

Activity Package:

  • A selection of tours are made up of a Tour Price + Optional Activity Package.
  • The Tour Price is pre-paid to secure your tour seat and include operational costs associated with each tour, such as; food, camping (or accommodation), national park fees, guide salaries, fuel, vehicle servicing, maintenance, road tolls and taxes.
  • The Optional Activity Package combine the popular activities available on the tour, giving you the option to pre-pay this package (and so carry less cash while travelling) or; you can pay it on the morning of departure to your Tour Guide in ZA Rand cash.
  • Activity packages are optional 98% of the time and covers what we consider to be ‘essential activities’ on the tours.
  • It is more convenient to pay these upon your arrival or on the first day of the tour.
  • If you do not pre-book a particular activity it may not be available and you may be disappointed.

Money Matters:

  • Your spending money, visas and optional activities needs to consist of a combination of Cash and Traveller Cheques in the currency quoted (tour specific). Credit cards are only accepted at some places (mostly larger cities) and throughout South Africa.
  • Visas are not accepted in East Africa.
  • In Southern and East Africa, additional credit card surcharges from 5% to 8% may be charged when using your card. It is best to use it only in case of emergency.
  • US Dollars, GB Sterling, Euro and select international currencies are used within Africa, with US Dollar being the most popular. You will find food, taxi, accommodation and optional activity prices are all quoted in US Dollars.
  • US Dollars cash notes must be issued POST 2005. No notes pre-dated are accepted due to fraudulent notes rife in East Africa. You can pre-order US Cash notes from your local bank or foreign exchange office prior to arriving in Africa.
  • It is best to bring a combination of larger denominations (USD100 and USD50) to pay for your Local Payment and smaller denominations (USD50, UDS20, USD 10 and USD5) for spending money, visas and optional activities.
  • ATMs are found throughout South Africa and other major towns and cities through Africa. However, you may not have access to an ATM for a few days, or they may be out of order. Please note that when drawing money from a local ATM, you will receive local currency.
  • ZAR is mostly used in South Africa and Namibia. We recommend USD for Botswana, Mozambique, Livingstone and Victoria Falls area.

Credit Cards:

  • Most of the major Southern and East African cities do have credit card facilities available however they may charge you a surcharge to use the facility.
  • Visa and Mastercard are the two most widely used accepted credit cards in Africa, while diners or American Express may not always be accepted

Banking facilities:

  • There are full banking facilities in the major towns based on weekly business hours. Here you can change money and withdraw cash from a credit card. Visa and Master Card are preferential, as other cards may not be widely accepted.
  • It is recommended to tip for various activities on tour – we suggest a tip of 1-3 euro (or whichever local currency is acceptable) per client, per half day activity.
  • Tipping your tour leader is also highly recommended as he / she works really hard to ensure you have the best experience on your tour. A tip of 2 – 5 Euros per client per day is a reasonable fair.
  • The amounts quoted above are only guidelines for the clients.
  • Botswana Tourism Levy: As of 1 June 2017, Botswana has implemented a tourism levy of US$ 30 per person.
  • Payment for this can either be made by credit card, debit card or cash.
  • For your convenience, payment machines are being placed at all ports of entry.
  • Upon payment you will receive a receipt for the levy and it is valid for 30 days multiple entry

Departure Tax:

  • Various countries require you to pay an Airport Departure Tax when departing on an international flight.
  • Varies from US$10 – US$60 depending on the departure time Security:
  • The truck has a safe for passports, money, credit cards and flight tickets only!
  • Keep your cameras, cell phones, iPad’s and other digital equipment close to you at all times (preferably in your day pack) as the operator will not be held responsible for anything that goes missing.
  • Leave your valuables at home!
  • Be vigilant and cautious at all times.
  • Always walk in a group, especially at night.
  • It is advisable to have travel insurance for your personal items.

Quality and Protection:

  • We are proudly bonded SATSA members. Our membership number is 1712.
  • We are also insured by SATIB.
  • SATSA is the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association and offers protection to international travellers against the possible loss of deposits (or monies paid) to a SATSA member (tour operator, car rental company, accommodation provider etc.), in case of liquidation. It is underwritten by Lombard Insurance and Lloyds of London.
  • SATSA is the driving force behind improving standards of tourism in South Africa, as offered by its various members (tour operators, car rental companies, accommodation provider etc.).
  • “Should a SATSA member who is a South African tourism business operation, run into financial problems, the bonding scheme allows the client to claim back their deposit without having to prove in a court or to the liquidator whom or what was paid, but simply to produce the relevant documentation to SATSA.” – Michael Tatalias, CEO SATSA.
  • Satsa Bonding Offers financial protection on all monies paid.

Quick Checklist

  • Make sure your vaccination requirements have been done at least 4 weeks prior to your tour
  • Remember to make sure your VISA is valid for you to go on tour
  • Remember to reconfirm your flights. Airlines vary in their requirements but we suggest you reconfirm 48 – 72 hours before your departure homebound
  • Remember to take your passport, vaccination certificate and flight tickets with you ( a photocopy of these is a good idea)
  • Remember to take a copy of your insurance policy with you
  • Remember to take your travel voucher to give to your crew at your pre-departure meeting
  • Remember to take your Adventure Pass in US $ cash (unless pre-paid)

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge - Interior View

Seasonal Information

This is a mighty voyage exploring some of the best kept wilderness Africa has to offer as well as its most iconic and dramatic spots. Go with the flow, journeying from the magnificent Okavango Delta to the plummeting Victoria Falls, onward to Hwange National Park and beyond. Boat rides, thrilling game drives and exploring the stunning, undisturbed nature characterise this deep dive into Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

  • World-class guides offer an interpretive experience
  • Exclusivity in private game-viewing areas
  • Explore by helicopter, mokoro, 4×4, boat and on foot, with private guides throughout
  • Stay on the banks of the Zambezi

Okavango Delta

Your first destination is the inimitable Okavango Delta. Renowned for its diversity of wildlife, this massive river delta exists as a world of glimmering pools, channels, islands and lagoons that blend with one another in a stunning landscape unlike anywhere else on earth. This is the gem of Botswana.

The unique terrain here makes safari even more special – besides 4×4 game drives, traditional mokoro dugout canoes give you the experience of soundlessly gliding along the water to view animals on the banks and among the reeds. Feel a part of the delta as you paddle in the early morning sunlight to witness elephants drinking together.

Change the pace on game drives, where large numbers of lions and leopards give rise to electrifying predator action. Birdlife in the Okavango also thrives, promising an all-round animal extravaganza in this natural haven.

Linyanti Concession

After three nights at the heart of the delta, you’ll head north to a private concession of the Linyanti Game Reserve. Your camp overlooks a stunning oxbow lagoon and, being situated close to an unfenced border with Chobe National Park, enjoys excellent wildlife sightings.

Linyanti is home to the Savuti Channel, a mysterious riverbed that dries up and flows for reasons that no one understands. It has been flowing since 2010 and the area is now a paradise of plant and animal life, drawing thrilling predator-prey contests. The park is also home to a vast elephant population, with these gentle giants hard to miss as they wander between the grass, woodlands and even camps.

Victoria Falls

Next, you’ll move to Zambia to descend on Africa’s adrenaline capital – Victoria Falls. As well as providing the dramatic backdrop for a host of daring activities like gorge swinging and bungee jumping, the falls are an important haven for wildlife and a beautiful, moving phenomenon. Nothing is quite like the sensation of standing before the earth’s largest falling sheet of water.

Take it in from above with a very special flight over the falls and its neighbouring landscape, before touching down to enjoy safari and river activities on the Zambezi and the national parks surrounding the area. There is also the opportunity to explore the fascinating Livingstone.

Hwange National Park

After two nights in Victoria Falls, your adventure takes you to Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. This park is the size of Belgium and has a greater diversity of mammal species than any other on earth. Explore the rolling grasslands and picturesque sunsets of the savannah here as you hunt for the big five and rarer species like wild dogs, roan and sable antelope. Feel the might of huge herds of elephants and enjoy the relative seclusion of this wildlife treasure trove.

Lake Kariba

Your final stop is one worth waiting for; Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba and the Bumi Hills. This huge lake is a magnet for creatures large and small, with healthy fish and bird populations and large numbers of big game at its shores. It’s an excellent spot for fishing, but the surrounding private reserve also lends itself to excellent sightings on game drives and entertaining interpretive bush walks. It neighbours Matusadona, sharing a rich flow of wildlife.

Example Itinerary

Botswana - Okavango Delta - 1553 - andBeyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

Upon arrival at Maun Airport, a member of the andBeyond team will meet you and assist you onto your flight to Chitabe Airstrip. Your flight will take you over pristine views of the Okavango’s waterways. Touch down to begin your adventure at andBeyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge.

The Okavango Delta is an oasis of life. Countless species thrive here, with many migrating during the dry season to avail of the rich water and plants in the area. The Big Five can all be found, with great prides of lions as well as high numbers of other big cats.

Besides game drives and guided walks exploring the Okavango’s wildlife, your stay includes a helicopter flight to the Tsodilo Hills, where the San bushmen lived for thousands of years until the late 20th century. Here a knowledgeable San guide will lead you through the ancient quartzite rocks and rock paintings that date back over 25,000 years. This is an energetic hike through a sacred place, viewed from a rare and valuable perspective.

Botswana - Linyanti Concessions - 1553 - Lodge from Riverbank

Take in a short game drive to Chitabe Airstrip, where you will be driven to Kings Pool Camp in a private concession of the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve.

Linyanti is a marvellous reserve, bordering Chobe within the vast natural corridor between Angola, Namibia, Zambia and Botswana. Rarer species, such as sable and roan antelope thrive in woodlands, which interweave open grassland and riverine forest to create a lush landscape. Huge herds of elephants characterise the area, as does incredible birding and the mysterious Savuti channel, which dries and flows of its own accord.

Embark on game drives both day and night on the concession, looking out for species like the lechwe, leopard, African fish-eagle, cheetah, giraffe and hippo. Guided walks are a must in this verdant location and allow guests to feel the bush beneath their feet as they adventure through the sights and sounds of the local flora and fauna.

Zambia - Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park - 1564 - Thorntree River Lodge Lodge pool at night

After a delightful breakfast, take a short game drive to Chobe Airstrip for your flight to Kasane Airport. Here an andBeyond team member will meet you and transfer you to Thorntree River Lodge. This involves clearing customs and immigration at the Botswana and Zambia border posts.

Let your senses come alive as you close in on the thundering of Victoria Falls. A tour takes you through the rainforest ecosystem that has grown at the foot of the falls before emerging beneath the roaring cascades – a sensation unlike any you’ve felt previously.

Take in the beauty of earth’s largest falling sheet of water from the sky, on a microlight flight that also takes in local villages, Batoka gorge, the Zambezi’s Rapid 26 and of course the precipitous falls themselves. A host of other adrenaline-fuelled activities make their home at Victoria – an unrivalled opportunity for thrill-seekers.

Besides the falls, the wealth of beauty and adventure of the Zambezi National Park is at your disposal. Set out on game drives in the Mosi-oa Tunya National Park, bush walks and rhino tracking as well as canoeing and river cruises accompanied by sunset cocktails. Catch and release fishing is an exciting way to spend an afternoon on the river. A host of cultural activities are also included, with a Simonga village visit, Livingstone Museum, and Maramba and Makuni market visits possible too.

Zimbabwe - Hwange - 1564 - Somalisa Tented Camp Decking at night

After breakfast you will be driven to Victoria Falls Airport, where you will fly to Hwange Airstrip. Here you will be greeted by a member of the andBeyond team and transferred to Somalisa Camp.

Welcome to Zimbabwe’s largest national park, home of Africa’s biggest elephant population. Enjoy the beauty of the floodplain where your camp is situated, where emerald grass and mirror-like pools catch the midday sun. Amongst the more famous safari wildlife, there are also gemsbok, roan antelope, cape wild dogs and white rhino that make their home at Hwange. Your stay includes game drives, guided bush walks and cultural visits to local villages.

Zimbabwe - Lake Kariba - 1564 - Bumi Hills Safari Lodge Swimming Pool

After breakfast you will be transferred to Hwange Airstrip for your flight to Bumi Hills Airstrip. Your home for the following two nights will be the magnificent Bumi Hills Safari Lodge.

The Bumi Hills are your camp’s namesake and where the lodge is perched, overlooking the tremendous Lake Kariba below. The lake was built and filled between 1958 and 1963, stretches over more than 5,000 square kilometres and is now home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including myriad fish, crocodiles, hippopotamus, fish eagles and other birds and lions, elephant and other big game at the shores.

This is a fantastic spot for fishing, but adventures also include game drives, bush walks, game viewing in hides and romantic sundowner cruises. The private concession here lies beside the Matusadona, and wildlife roam freely between the two parks, allowing a broad range of encounters while out on safari.

After a final tasty breakfast, we bid farewell and you will be transferred to Bumi Hills Airstrip for your flight to Robert Gabriel Mugabe Airport, where you will arrive in time for your onward travel arrangements.

Dates are flexible so please make an enquiry and tell us a range of dates you are considering so we can check availability.

One of Africa’s seven natural wonders and a UNESCO world heritage site, the Okavango Delta is the sprawling mass of marshes, islands, channels and lagoons formed where the Okavango flows into the Kalahari basin. More than 200,000 animals migrate here from July to September, a true oasis of wildlife in the summer heat. It promises one of the richest safari experiences on earth, boasting animals from the Big Five to Nile crocodiles to abundant African wild dogs and white rhinoceros. Thousands of plant species and over 500 bird species thrive.

The Zambezi River is nearly two kilometres wide at Victoria Falls.  The gorges down which the river tumbles are home to several species of endangered and migratory bird species. The stunning iridescent mist created by the plummeting water can be seen from more than 20 kilometres away and gives rise to the delicately balanced rainforest-like ecosystem at the foot of the waterfall.

Wild World Safaris

See what the world can do

Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe

These three landlocked southern African countries are renowned for their wildlife reserves. The generally disciplined control of rules for game viewing and accommodation facilities, allow wildlife to live in pristine natural environments. The big five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo), are all present. It’s not always easy to see ‘the Big Five’ in the way that it is in the open savannahs of East Africa. The excellent professional guides in these wilderness areas enhance the search for wildlife creating unique and rewarding experiences.

Botswana shares borders with Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. It has long been one of Africa’s most politically stable countries. The world’s largest inland delta, the Okavango Delta (including Savute and Linyanti), and Moremi form a green oasis and wildlife haven that is unique in a country that is otherwise made up of semi-desert. The Central Kalahari, Makgadikgadi Pans, Nxai Pan fall within these arid zones that make up the bulk of the Botswana landscape. In the northeast is the savannah region of the Chobe which extends to the Zambezi River and the border with Zimbabwe. This area is renowned for its high elephant population and is close to the Victoria Falls.

Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River lie between Zambia and Zimbabwe. At least half of all visitors to these two countries will visit Victoria Falls at some point.

Shares borders with Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Angola. Main conservation parks include the South Luangwa, North Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Liuwa Plains, and Kafue National Park. Two healthy river systems, the Luangwa and Zambezi, provide the parks with life-giving water. Notably, these parks are more off the beaten track than many others in Africa. A better quality experience for the wildlife lover is the result.

Zimbabwe shares borders with Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia. Here the m ain conservation parks include Hwange, Mana Pools, Matusadona, Gona-re-Zhou and Matobo National Parks. Victoria Falls is the gateway to these wilderness areas. Visitors can combine seeing one of the Seven Wonders of the World with incredible wildlife safaris just a short distance away.

Description of ZIMBABWE & Zambia: A Wet Season Photography Adventure

Photographic experience:.

Immerse yourself in wonderful African photography safari experiences of Zimbabwe and Zambia, among the continent’s most wild and amazing areas. This exclusive safari highlights contrasting eco-systems and animals, from the open, arid Kalahari grasslands to lush riverine habitats on the Zambezi. We will be traveling during the wet season and this offers beautiful green backgrounds, flowers, and outstanding skies for a wide variety of images.

In Zimbabwe, we’ll focus our time in Hwange, the country’s largest National Park, where the eastern edge of the Kalahari sands mix with teak forests to host a great diversity of desert-adapted and woodland species. Hwange National Park is home to some of southern Africa’s outstanding wildlife such as cheetahs, wild dogs, elephants, sable antelope, baboons, lions, and so much more. Even better, going during the wet season means there will be very few vehicles competing for photographic opportunities. In 2023, the most vehicles we had near us at any one time was one.

The private Linkwasha concession, in the south-eastern corner of Hwange, is one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas, offering Zimbabwe’s best summer game viewing. We’ll base ourselves at Davison’s Camp, surrounded by ecologically-diverse habitats, including vast open palm-fringed plains, grasslands, acacia woodlands and teak forests. Large numbers of animals move through the landscape year round – elephant, buffalo, sable, roan, giraffe, wildebeest, impala and even gemsbok. Predators follow them closely: lion, wild dog and cheetah, along with African wildcat, serval and spotted hyaena (heard but difficult to see).

We finish our exciting trip in Zambia along the Zambezi River where a river boat cruises in a power boat spotlights nile crocodiles, hippos, African skimmers and the elusive African finfoot. We’ll enjoy stunning vistas and a variety of birds at the world-famous Victoria Falls. A game drive within Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park provides exciting opportunity to track white rhino on foot.

Warm hospitality, exceptional guiding, delicious food, and outstanding accommodations create an unforgettable safari experience. High-quality private camps situated in remote locations ensure unsurpassed wildlife viewing amidst the wild African landscape. Our exciting safari stimulates myriad images that memorialize the breath-taking beauty and inspiration of southern Africa. We’ll all enjoy plenty of time to observe, learn about, and photograph amazing wildlife on this wonderful safari. We will have occasional times to discuss post-processing while at camp.

This safari will focus purely on photography with outings set to accommodate great lighting, subjects, and maximize opportunities. We will spend down time in camp relaxing and learning post-processing. Come join Lee Hoy  for an African photography experience you won’t forget

In addition to great wildlife photography, this trip will provide occasion for some outstanding landscape photography.

Culinary Experience:

The food is outstanding at both lodges/camps and you will find a more than suitable fare for any taste. With three outstanding meals a day and plenty of tea and biscuits as well as the traditional sundowners, you will have more outstanding food than you can get down an elephant! We will most likely have at least two (2) lunches in the field while in Hwange National Park.

Length of Tour

Brief itinerary.

Day 1 : AM arrival at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Fly to Hwange NP Day 2-7 : Hwange NP Day 8 : Fly to Victoria Falls; Transfer to Livingstone, Zambia Day 9-10 : Victoria Falls; Most-oa-Tunya NP Day 11 : Depart from Livingstone, Zambia

Day 1: Arrive in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; Fly to Davison’s Camp (7 nights)

We’ll arrive late morning at Victoria Falls Airport, then transfer early afternoon by light aircraft from Victoria Falls to Davison’s Camp in the southern-eastern corner of Hwange National Park. Here, our Zimbabwe safari begins off the beaten track in a open-sided 4WD game vehicles.

Day 2-7: Davison’s Camp, Hwange National Park

Hwange, Zimbabwe’s largest National Park, is home to some of southern Africa’s last great elephant, buffalo and sable herds. We’ll spend 6 full days exploring the south-eastern corner of Hwange, in the private Linkwasha concession. Here, the eastern edge of the Kalahari sands merge with grasslands and teak forests to host a great variety of desert-adapted and woodland species.

We’ll base ourselves at Davison’s, an intimate and secluded tented camp providing unsurpassed game-viewing experiences. Large numbers of animals move through the landscape year-round – elephant, buffalo, sable, roan, giraffe, wildebeest, impala and even gemsbok. Predators follow them closely – lion, leopard, wild dog and cheetah, along with African wildcat, serval and spotted hyaena.

Our safari game drives are diverse and interesting, highlighting something new each day, whether it is cheetah stalking stealthily through the grasses, prides of lions lounging in the shade, a journey of giraffes wandering through Ngamo Plains, or wild dogs on a hunt. Rewarding wildlife encounters are never far away in Hwange. A log-pile hide (blind) situated next to the camp watering hole where waterfowl gather!

Avian activity abounds in Hwange, with such highlights as ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird, swallow-tailed bee-eaters, Burchell’s sandgrouse,  lilac-breasted roller, magpie shrike, and many more. Hornbills are well represented with grey, southern red-billed, southern yellow-billed and the large southern ground-hornbill.

Raptors include African fish eagle, African hawk-eagle, lesser spotted eagle, martial eagle, bateleur, and black-chested snake-eagle. White-headed, African white-backed and lappet-faced vultures constantly search for carcasses. Owls are always a treat to find, from the diminutive pearl-spotted and African barred owlet, to giant Verreaux’s eagle-owls.

Walking amongst the African landscape is a special treat, and we’ll have opportunity to explore on foot, escorted by an armed, certified safari guide who will share their knowledge and insights about many aspects of plants and wildlife. We’ll examine large termite mounds, a fascinating part of the ecosystem, watch determined dung beetles do their work, and look for signs of animal tracks.

Our days generally begin with early morning breakfast, followed by a game drive. We’ll return for a mid-day meal and opportunity to journal, or relax until the afternoon game drive. Happy hour sundowners may be enjoyed on the ride back, arriving in time for delicious dinners served by wonderfully friendly staff.

We’ll experience the nocturnal side of Hwange’s wildlife during night game drives, with chances to see owls, nightjars, lesser bushbaby, genets, yellow mongoose, scrub hare, springhare and even honey badger.

Day 8 : Fly from Davison’s Camp to Victoria Falls; transfer to Toka Leya, Zambia (3 nights)

We’ll transfer mid-morning from Davison’s Camp by light aircraft to Victoria Falls Airport. From there, it’s a short drive to the Zambian border, where we’ll clear customs and immigration before continuing to Toka Leya, a beautiful camp situated on the banks of the Zambezi River.

We’ll enjoy a wonderful sunset river cruise on the Zambezi River, looking out for Half-collared Kingfisher, African Finfoot, African Skimmer, Rock Pratincole, Water Thick-knees, White-crowned Lapwing, and elephants swimming across the river!

We’ll observe enormous Nile crocodiles basking on the banks and pods of hippos wallowing in the shallows.

We’ll settle in for three full days/nights in the luxurious Toka Leya camp, exploring the area with several activities planned.

Day 9-10: Victoria Falls; Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

Victoria Falls – one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World – is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the Smoke that Thunders.” This fitting name reflects the plumes of spray that are visible for some distance, caused by the cascading waters of the Zambezi River. This area showcases spectacular scenic beauty, from thundering falls to picturesque flowing waters lined by lush vegetation. Wildlife shows abundantly while boating on the river, or enjoying game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park upstream from the falls.

The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park encompasses mopane and Zambian teak woodlands, and thick riverine forest of palm trees along the banks of the Zambezi River. The park is home to many birds including Black-collared Barbet, Southern Black Tit, Collared Palm Thrush, Arrow-marked Babbler, Golden-tailed Woodpecker, Broad-billed Roller, Black Cuckoo-Shrike and Jacobin Cuckoo. Mammals include elephant, southern giraffe, greater kudu, common zebra, buffalo, sable antelope, and impala.

There will be an optional (price not included) helicopter ride over Victoria Falls and into the gorge.

This is the only location in Zambia to see rare white rhino; decades of poaching had eliminated 12,000 of them by 1993. Four white rhinos were introduced to the park in 2008, and their number has increased under close guard by armed rangers. We’ll take an exciting guided walk through the open bush to look for these rare, beautiful creatures.

Day 11: Depart from Livingstone, Zambia

The final hours of our African safari we reflect on amazing wildlife, stunning landscapes, and experiences of a lifetime in Zimbabwe and Zambia. At mid-morning, we say good-bye to our wonderful hosts and guides, and transfer to Livingstone Airport for international departures returning to the US.

Please note that this itinerary is a guideline, and while we hope to do everything on safari, activities are subject to change, due to circumstances beyond our control.

Elderly American tourist killed after elephant attacks vehicle in Zambia, reports say

zimbabwe zambia tour

An American tourist was killed after an "aggressive" bull elephant attacked the vehicle on March 30 during a tour in Zambia, according to media reports.

The tourist, identified only as an 80-year-old American woman, was injured when an "aggressive" elephant charged a vehicle carrying six guests and a guide in Kafue National Park in Zambia, according to a statement provided to multiple outlets including NBC News and People . She was part of a group staying at the Lufupa Camp and had gone out for a photography tour.

Zambia is a landlocked country located in southern Africa, bordered by countries including Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.

Another woman who was injured was taken to a private hospital in South Africa, conservation and safari company Wilderness told multiple outlets. Four other people also received treatment for minor injuries.

Video shared on social media by ABC News shows the moment the elephant charged, with images showing later that the vehicle had been flipped on its side.

"The six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant," Keith Vincent, Wilderness' chief executive officer, said in a statement to ABC News. He added that the safari guide's vehicle was "blocked" by the terrain at the time of the attack.

The woman's body will be returned to her family in the U.S., Wilderness said in the statement to media.

USA TODAY has contacted Zambia police and Wilderness for more information.
