Humro Home Chilapata is a small Homestay located on the southern fringe of the Chilapata forest. The small lodge is managed by a Rava family. Sundar Rava, who looks after the Homestay, is a social activist. The home lodge is built on a two-storied construction in the traditional Dooars style. The rooms open towards vast open farmland which ends abruptly as the dense Chilapata Jungle begins. The accommodation combines the advantages of a homestay with amenities similar to a resort or hotel. The Chilapata Jeep safari booking point is within walking distance from our eco resort. Our Jungle Lodge is situated in the forest village and you will be staying with a family that has been living in these forests for decades. The forest is about 200 meters ahead of you and in the morning and evening, it is not unusual to get to see a herd of elephants or a stray rhino roaming on the forest fringes.

As in most Humro Home accommodations, we offer no-frill decent clean and hygienic accommodation at Chilapata. There is no television or wifi in the room. There is one large double bed in each room with provision for an extra bed/mattress in case of a third guest.

There is a dining hall and Kitchen next to the main building. We mostly serve Bengali and local cuisine here. Our eco-resort is curved out of the villager's firm land, during the cultivation season, the area around the Jungle resort is covered with paddy. You may enjoy as well as join in the cultivation with the locals. At Humro Home, you are not a customer, you are our guest and we will take you to our home and show you our way of life here.

Location / Accessibility

Our Homestay faces the forest which is across a paddy field about 100 meters away. In the evening you can seat comfortably on the wooden Veranda and watch some wildlife that comes out of the forest into the open. Peacocks, Boars, and Deer are the most common, and Rhinos and elephants can also be seen sometimes.

Walk across the field and closer to the forest, accompanied by a local, you can see a small rivulet by the forest side as well as a small pond. There are plenty of birds in the vicinity for those interested. The road behind the Homestay can be taken for a stroll or a village walk. Take a drive for about a km to reach the Torsha riverbed which is an ideal spot for wildlife sightings. Walk in the opposite direction and the Chilapata forest range office is just 250 meters away. There are several shops and local people here for you to mingle with.

Apart from enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the area and generally enjoying nature, most tourists love to go for forest safari at Chilapata.

The early morning and afternoon jeep safaris take you deep inside the forest where there is a good likelihood of sighting elephants, rhinos, Deer, Gaur and other wildlife. The dense forest makes this safari quite enjoyable. Tickets for the safari are available at the Chilapata forest check post which is within walking distance from the Homestay. The forest jeep safari in Chilapata forest starts from the check post nearby. This is the prime attraction for tourists visiting Chilapata. The “Nal Rajar Garh”, meaning the fort of the Nal King, though in ruins now, can be reached on foot or on Jeep safari. Being a forest area, there are restrictions on activities inside the forest. Walks can be arranged in the village to learn about local culture or in the nearby Mathura Tea garden. You can also visit the Torsa River Sun Set point which is just 2 km from our Accommodation.

Jaldapara and Buxa forests are both within a driving distance of less than an hour, and so is Coochbehar town. So Chilapata can be your base to visit these forests or the Historic Coochbehar palace and the Madan Mohan Temple there. Phuentsholing border towns of India and Bhutan can also be reached in a drive time of just over an hour.

Jaldapara Entrance – 33 km, 50 minutes drive Buxa forest entry gate – 34 km, 50 minutes drive Coochbehar Palace – 38 km, 1-hour Phuenthsoling Bhutan Boarder – 42 km, 1 hour 15 minutes. (Travel time is an approximate value, that may differ depending on road conditions and traffic)

The village is referred to as Kumai Busty, a forest village in the Chilapata forest. The village is located at the extreme south of Chilapata. The larger resorts and hotels are mostly located within a distance of just 1 to 2 km from our Homestay. Yet we are situated in the forest village far from the usual traffic of tourists.

How to get to Chilapata Forest?

Located nearly 20 km away from the Alipurduar District- you can travel by air to reach the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in West Bengal. From there you can choose to travel by road or take a train from the Howrah railway station or the Sealdah railway station (which is just 30 mins away from the main airport) to reach Alipurduar. From there you can take a public or a private cab.

There are many lovely resorts around the area so tourists can seek their accommodation very close to their forest destination. From forest camps to forest bungalows built amid the Sal trees – that alone is a great start to this forest adventure!

What’s the best time to visit the Chilapata Forest ?

Months from September to February are considered to be the best periods to visit this forest.

Things to See & Do at Chilapata Forests

The best way for tourists to enjoy the forest trails in the jungle is to hire a tour guide. This will allow you to not only take the maximum out of your hiking experience, but it will also allow you to explore some of the many hidden treasures here.

The first thing you will notice is just how much of a dense forest the Chilapata Forest truly is. The trees are large and thick, making it challenging for the sun rays to seep in generously. So there is always a look of cool gloominess throughout. Obviously, this doesn’t take away any of the beauty it has, in fact, it creates a whole new appreciation for large trees and the incredible uses they have.

The diverse wildlife is a major part of the attraction here. Since the forest forms an elephant corridor between the famous Jaldapara National Park and the Buxa Tiger Reserve, you can witness your fair share of wildlife beauties on your way. Like wild Elephants, Bison, Sambars, Barking Deer, and if you are lucky, the elusive leopards. A Jeep Safari or an Elephant Safari are the most popular means of exploring the Chilapata forest and the surrounding jungle grounds of the Jaldapara National Park. As you travel deep into the forest, you can maybe even come across the famous yet super rare one-horned rhinoceros.

Keep in mind that while there is a stunning river flowing through the forest, most jeep safaris tend to avoid the trails along the river. This is probably to evade disturbing most wildlife and bird life that dwells along the river. Still, it doesn’t limit you from seeing a breathtaking range of wildlife at all. You can also explore the famous historical site – the Fort of Nal Kings, a.k.a. Nal Rajar Ghar. While this ancient site is in ruins, with a tour guide you can get a deeper understanding of the story behind it. The famous Buxa Reserve is a must, the Mahakal Caves and the Bhuta Basi, which is in the heart of the forest and will add more variety to your forest adventure.

Bottom line: Chilapata forests is an incredible gateway to a nature paradise that will leave an everlasting impression on you. Worth a visit? Absolutely.

And in this darkness lurks the animals. Enjoy safely!

Things to do in Chilapata Forest

You can also simply enjoy the thick forest greenery in the winter season by driving down the jungle alleys. The guests can enjoy elephant safaris as well as jeep safaris in Chilapata Forest. You can enjoy on the banks of a small hilly stream and a wooden bridge over it. You can take Tonga rides through the Mathura tea garden too. Boating on the Bania River and angling on the confluence of the Kalchini, Bania and Buri Basra are other fun options in Chilapata.

Wildlife from the watchtowers is the best option here. These towers are near water bodies where animals come for a drink. The animals also love a salt lick during hot summer months and so small heaps of salt are arranged by the authorities to attract them. One of the “must visit” is a watch tower overlooking the Torsha River. If you are lucky you may spot a rhino on the river bed, hiding in the tall grass. And then of course these grassy lands are home to elephants. But near the watch tower there are mostly trained ones, locally known as the “Kunki”. The tall grass growths are also the hidey hole of leopards. If you want a photo, get the perfect camera that can zoom into anything from the watchtower. It is better not to get close to the river or grassy lands.

Chilapata Forest Sightseeing

The forest bungalow here is an attraction in itself as it dates back to the British rule in India. There is a well-maintained and interesting log book that one can read to know more about the bungalow. Though there is no habitation in the park, there are many ethnic people in surrounding villages like Saraswati, Budhuram, Bichabhanga, Chatua, Kailipur and Murid. These villages are said to have more than 10,000 locals, whose main livelihood come from forest department activities, eco-tourism, etc. You can visit these villages to know more about their life and culture. One of the most special attractions here is the live ethnic tribal dance show held every evening in Budhuram Forest Village .

One of the most interesting sites here are the ruins of the “Nalraja Garh”, or fort of the Nal kings. It was built 2000 years ago in the Gupta period in the fifth century C.E., the Golden Age of India. This is one of the largest secular monuments of Gupta Period still standing tall in West Bengal. The Nalraja Garh is spread over half a mile. The interiors are filled with dense jungle and cannot be walked into. There may be some snakes, so better not to venture in. Though a shabby and ill maintained place, the fort is of great archaeological value.

Chilapata – A Memorable Jungle Safari! (Dooars Part I)

Lush green landscapes, colorful butterflies, various unknown birds, innumerable rivers and wildlife, yes, I am talking about  Forest . And if you are in West Bengal, the first thing that comes to your mind is nothing but Dooars. Previously, I visited this place in 2005 when I was a kid, but still I remembered the essence of the place.

chilapata jeep safari

So after a very long time, we decided to go for a forest trip, and we thought of visiting Chilapata which is located in Dooars. Chilapata was not a very popular tourist destination until recently. Previously, the area was known for dacoits, but now it is safe and secure.

Chilapata is a dense forest adjacent to Jaldapara National Park. It is approximately 20kms from Alipurduar. We came across a brief history regarding the name of this place from the locals. The name Chilapata has been derived from the name of the Cooch Army Commander Chila Rai (or Shukladhaj), who was the younger brother of Maharaja Nara Narayan, the king of Cooch Behar. He was a great warrior and played the major role in extending the royal kingdom. He was widely respected and loved by the people for his nature. In a battle against the king of Assam, Shukladhaj on his horse back jumped like a ‘Chil’ or eagle and crossed Bharali River near Guwahati. That is why he was known as Chilarai. Chilarai took shelter in this place, and thereby this place acquired its name as Chilapata.

So our journey towards Chilapata began in the month of February. I usually prefer off-season to visit a place, in that way I can save some money and stay peacefully (with comparatively lesser or no crowd).

After checking-in to our pre-booked guest house, we enquired about the forest safari. The manager of that place informed us that we can go for a jeep safari on that day itself at 3pm. We were little tired after an overnight train journey, but the news of this jeep safari charged us like anything. After having some food and taking some rest, we headed towards the place from where the safari would start.

272

And finally, our safari started!!

26

After being driven in the main road for some kilometres we entered into the main forest; the  kutcha  road, dense jungle, different kinds of unknown sounds and the urge to see wildlife. I was excited and at the same time mesmerized by seeing the beauty of the place.

115

While exploring the forest, we had witnessed numerous peacocks, wild boar, jungle cock, deer and elephant. We had two and half hour safari, starting from 3pm and ending at 5:30pm.

38

Our safari guide and the jeep driver, both were very good. They tried hard and soul in order to show us wild animals.

195

If you are a nature lover and if such natural beauty excites you, then Chilapata is a must visit place. Quite, serene, rejuvenating are some of the words that define this area. If you ask for my opinion, I was mesmerized with the beauty of this jungle. I never ever saw such dense forest before, so it was an awesome treat for me. The place was filled with excitement and adventure. Chilapata is home to the rhinoceros which we failed to witness, but I do not regret for that, as the forest thrilled me in this entire safari with its awestruck beauty. My overall experience was great and I will never forget this Safari!

48

Some Important Points:

  • Safari usually takes place in the afternoon. There is no provision of night safari. One jeep safari cost 2100 (which includes a tribal dance programme).
  • No one gives you any guarantee of witnessing wildlife in this safari. As this is a forest, you can see the wild animals if at all they come near the roads.
  • Winter Season is the best time to visit forest, starting from October. The best possible time to see wild animal is in April and May, during these months the forest gets dry and thereby gives an opportunity to witness wildlife.
  • The entry to the forest and thereby the safaris remain closed in monsoon, i.e., from July to September. As the roads become unsafe during the rainy season, the forest department does not allow any tourist in the jungle.
  • Last but not the least; do not forget to take your camera in order to take some really nice and rare pictures.

Go ahead and plan your next trip to Chilapata. Have a nice and safe journey!!

Over its 216 square kilometers, the Jaldapara Sanctuary includes woodlands, meadows, perennial streams, sandy riverbanks, and large expanses of tall grass.

It has a variety of plants and animals that live in mixed deciduous forests, meadows, and riverbanks. The sanctuary also has vivid grassland that serves as the shelter for various species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and birds.

From Siliguri, you can also rent a car to get to Jaldapara. It will cost you between Rs. 2000 – 4000. Share jeeps are also available till Madarihat.

Flora and Fauna at Jaldapara National Park

chilapata jeep safari

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a wide range of wildlife and beautiful flora that will captivate you in every possible way. The majority of the woodland of this national park is savannah and is covered with tall elephant grass.

The Asiatic one-horned rhinoceros is the sanctuary’s major attraction. Jaldapara National Park, and Kaziranga National Park in Assam, have India’s highest number of one-horned rhinos.

Leopard, elephant, sambhar deer, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, wild pig, and bison are among the other animals seen here.

Jaldapara is a haven for avian enthusiasts. It is one of the few locations in India where you can see the Bengal florican, also known as the Bengal Bustard. Along with the pied hornbill, peafowl, partridge, and jungle fowl, other birds that can be found in this area include the crested eagle, Pallas’s fishing eagle, and Shikra.

In addition, eight species of freshwater turtles, a python, a monitor lizard, a Krate, a cobra, and a gecko have taken shelter here.

Therefore this place will offer sights of rich wildlife engaged in different activities. You can have exciting views of the rhinos remaining submerged in the small lakes or elephants crossing rivers and drinking water in the streams.

The river Torsha runs through this rainforest sanctuary, which is also another beautiful place to see in Jaldapara. The Malangi River also runs from east to west.

Best time to visit Jaldapara National Park

The period following the monsoon, from October to January, is the ideal time to visit Jaldapara National park.

During winter, the temperature is pleasant and ideal for trips to the jungle, but the trees lose their leaves in winter, and the grasslands become sparser. However, you can surely spot wildlife during this time.

The forest appears lush and peaceful during the monsoon, as the jungle is denser than ever, and the trees and meadows have grown during the monsoon with new leaves. Therefore, spotting animals during this time may be difficult until they come out in the open, as they often remain hidden in the foliage. Additionally, there may be sporadic rains.

The park remains closed from June 15 – September 15 since it is the breeding season for animals.

You can also visit this place during summer, but the weather may be uncomfortable.

So try to plan your trips in winter and avoid visiting in summer and monsoons.

See Photos Of The 2024 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts

  • Jeep unveils four new concept vehicles for 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, catering to all off-road enthusiasts with different powertrains.
  • The Low Down concept pays homage to the Wrangler Rubicon 392 with a custom overhaul and 475-hp Hemi V8 engine.
  • The Dispatcher features a 375-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain with a retro look and luxurious interior, blending history with modernity.

For this year's 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep and Mopar-led Jeep Performance Parts introduce four new concepts vehicles . With powertrains ranging from the beloved 392 Hemi V8 to the 4xe hybrid, there are concepts here that appeal to every kind of off-road enthusiast.

HotCars' own Editor-At-Large Chris Tonn was on hand for the initial press reveal and had this to say: "[The] designers and engineers try and get to events like the Easter Jeep Safari to see what people are using out on the trails - both for function and for style. Things that have trickled down from existing users have made their ways into Easter Jeep Safari concepts and then eventually into production vehicles."

2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Final Edition Goes Out With A Hemi-Powered Bang

Jeep low down.

For all those out there lamenting the gradual demise of the Hemi V8, Jeep has some good news for you in the form of the Jeep Wrangler-based Low Down concept. While Jeep is sadly killing off the short-lived V8 Wrangler Rubicon 392 this year, this off-road Mopar is paying homage by giving the model a custom overhaul while still retaining its 475-hp 6.4-liter naturally aspirated Hemi V8 under the hood.

Jeep Low Down Concept Key Features

  • 475 hp 6.4-liter naturally aspirated Hemi V8
  • Poison Apple Red paint and white decals
  • Custom bodywork and carbon hood with power dome
  • 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires and 20-inch beadlock wheels

Aside from the eye-catching red paint, the most notable feature of the Low Down concept is the frankly enormous 20-inch gold beadlock wheels wrapped in gigantic 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain off-road tires . To get everything to fit, the Jeep also has custom high-clearance fenders and shorter overhangs front and rear while retaining the stock Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension. Here are Chris' impressions from attending the Low Down concept's reveal:

"The red 392 Wrangler is inspired by race cars, of all things — they had pictures of vintage Ferraris and Lancias on screen. They put 40-inch tires on a Rubicon without lifting it, so it looks lower and more hunkered down."

Meanwhile, the standard Dana 44 axles with 4:10 gears have been replaced by Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears. Jeep claims all these changes allow for a significant increase in approach and departure angles with higher ground clearance while retaining a low center of gravity. The interior has also seen some changes, with a simplified dash removing the infotainment screens and the addition of custom black leather and cloth seats.

The 10 Most Reliable Jeeps On The Used Market

Jeep willys dispatcher.

The second of the Wrangler-based concepts is a minty green Jeep dubbed the Dispatcher. The Dispatcher features the 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain , producing 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Power goes to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and Dana 50 Advantech front and rear axles. Here's Chris's take:

"They made a note that the mail delivery Jeep was once called a Dispatcher, but unlike that old one this does indeed have 4WD. Willys embossed logo on the hood - a glimpse of postwar Americana. History meets the future. They put flat fenders on there, and a houndstooth-type material on the seats."

On the outside, the Dispatcher has a custom old-school front bumper and ‘WILLYS’ lettering embossed on the side of the hood, paying homage to the early flat-fender Jeeps . A Warn Epic Series winch continues the more utilitarian theme. The wheels are also appropriately retro, with the Dispatcher sitting on a set of cream 16-by-7.0-inch alloy “steelies” wrapped in Super Traxion 36-inch tires. Meanwhile, custom Element 115 Green paint finishes off the old-school aesthetic.

The inside is also a throwback, albeit with a far more luxurious interior feel than any Jeep of yesteryear. The distressed saddle brown leather and houndstooth cloth seats make do without a headrest, which is said to invoke a more laid-back, vintage feel.

Jeep Wrangler Upgrades: Top 12 Mods For Beginners

Jeep gladiator rubicon high top.

Moving up in size, the next concept we’re looking at is the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept, built by Jeep Performance Parts to showcase their extensive customer catalog. Under the hood is slightly more underwhelming, with the High Top housing the more pedestrian 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. However, the 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires and 18-inch Satin Black KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels make far more of a statement.

The High Top also rides tall on AccuAir adjustable air suspension , with Concept JPP flat fender flares all around, providing optimal ground clearance. The exterior also features an American Expedition Vehicles front bumper with a Warn winch sitting below a custom protective hoop.

The Ginger Snap metallic paint adorns the body, along with a two-tone black livery - a color theme that continues on the inside with the custom two-tone leather seats. The High Top also features a decked truck bed storage system and rock-slider rocker panels with power-retractable steps.

What To Expect When You Daily-Drive A Jeep Wrangler

Jeep vacationeer.

Last but not least we’re moving away from the more classic style of Jeep and looking at the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer SUV. However, in an interesting twist, the second and third rows of seats are now gone in favor of an open space, which leads to the custom, carbon-fiber RedTail Overland SkyLoft tent box sitting on top of the roof .

The SkyLoft has space for two to sleep, and Jeep says it’s even climate-controlled, likely thanks to the integrated solar panels. Aside from the seat delete, the interior itself has also received a massive retro-inspired overhaul, with wood-effect paneling throughout. Chris told us his observations of the Vacationeer's interior:

"The woodgrain has a 3-D texture to it to make it look/feel like actual wood. The plaid inserts within the seats have a bunch of Jeep easter eggs within and they look properly vintage in my estimation."

As for the powertrain, the Vacationeer has the much-talked-about turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six Hurricane engine , which is also set to feature in the next-generation Dodge Charger muscle car. It seems as though Jeep and JJP have brought out all the stops this year, and we’re certain the 20,000-strong Jeep community will love what they see when these concepts turn up at Easter Jeep Safari 2024.
