Sixx:A.M. is a hard rock band fronted by Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx. It’s remaining lineup is comprised of lead guitarist DJ Ashba and vocalist James Michael. Their sound is structured on melodic glam metal and is seasoned with influences of overtly theatrical rock stars like Marilyn Manson and Dio.

The conception of the group took place in 2006 in Los Angeles, California, US, stemming largely from Sixx’s autobiography “The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star”. Their first release came out in 2007 and was entitled “The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack”. It was a strong start for the band, housing one of their most recognized tracks, “Life is Beautiful”. The single shot to No. 2 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and No. 26 on the Billboard Rock Singles chart.

During the making of their studio debut the band had no drummer; however, the vacancy was filled as singer James Michael programmed rhythmic patterns for all the tracks. However once the band started performing live (their first gig being at the Crash Mansion) they brought in drummer Glen Sobel, formerly of the group Beautiful Creatures. Their next big concert was opening for Korn, which took place on 25 October 2007.

Though the band had planned to start a tour of their own in the Spring of 2008 they had to delay it, but later rescheduled their dates, aligning them with Motley Crue’s Crue Fest summer tour.

Following the group’s tour there were rumors surfacing that the band had begun writing material for a new album. This was confirmed in 2009 and by early 2010 the band reported that they had recorded at least two albums worth of music.

Their 2nd studio album “This Is Gonna Hurt” was issued on 3 May 2011 and accompanied the release of Sixx’s 2nd book. This was proceeded a couple months latter by a 7 track EP appropriately titled “7”. Their 3rd studio album was released on 7 October 2014 and contained the single “Gotta Get It Right” as well as a cover of the Car’s classic hit “Drive”.

Live reviews

Ok so I saw the guys on 5-13-16 in FortWayne Indiana at what I would at best call a dive bar, small dark and gritty a place you would think a rock band would feel at home in. I have to say I was really excited to see the band and even sprang for sound check tickets. There was an issue getting my e-mail for the sound check but it was easily resolved and Kim at venue check in was great. I enjoyed the sound check , it was a great experience the guys were funny during Q&A . Now about the show I really hate to say this but about half way through the show I felt like the guys were doing a really poor job of even trying to phone it in. I should clarify that James Michael's voice was in great form but there wasn't much enthusiasm coming from Nikki Sixx or D.J. Ashba. You know it's not going well when girls are leaving the stage area to go back to the bar "because the sound is better". The after show acoustic behind the bus was one song "Rise" and after it James was motioning that he was done. A hand motion across the throat let us all know he was not into it. Possible a picture posted by Nikki Sixx to his Instagram account prior to the show could have summed up how he felt about the show before it even started, it was a photo of a nasty toilet backstage. Don't get me wrong SIXX:A.M. Makes great music but this was not a great show. Would I see them again?Yes without hesitation but it was what it was. I guess I was hoping for a better vibe in a small venue.

Sixx: A.M. I wonder who on earth that could be? Anymore clues? They’re based in Los Angeles, California. Gotta be Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue then? A pat on the back for me. I think it’s fantastic that he keeps it all of these other side projects going aside from Motley Crue, who of course do take many hiatuses – so why not. This performance is filled with a variety of singles from throughout their career, starting with “Pray for Me”. It is a very energetic crowd this evening, with the support from a lot of Motley Crue fans of course. Who are drinking from the moment that they walk in, lining the bars and already taking shots of tequila. –When in Rome.

“Are You With Me Now” creates a ruckus amount of applause amongst this horde of people. “Tomorrow” is an anthem amongst this audience with every word being sang at the top of their voices complete with fists in the air to each syllable of each chorus. The riffs are what make their sound so memorable too, they are the parts of the songs that everyone goes away singing nice and loud as they leave walking down sunset strip.

Californian hard rock outfit Sixx:A.M may have only formed in 2007 yet since then they have gone to be compared to some of the all time guitar greats in reference to their live show. With three incredibly talented musicians, including the bassist of Mötley Crüe James Michael, they go about creating momentous walls of sound that fill arenas with ease.

With three albums released so far, they hand select the tracks that they believe best demonstrates their musical abilities and have designed a live show around these. The visuals, pyrotechnics and lighting all compliment the gigantic atmosphere that the band intends to illustrate their sound. The sheer scale of 'Tomorrow' could make your head spin and you have to remember at points that it is just three musicians creating all of this music. The piercing guitar riffs travel around the venue rapidly and are met by roars of approval from the audience and by the final exhaustive instrumentals of 'Life Is Beautiful' neither the audience or the band seems ready to call it a night.

While I love Sixx:A.M. & their music, the Fort Wayne venue, Pieres, is terrible for concerts. The sound quality is terrible, viewing is terrible, over-crowded, & too hot. The band played well with a lot of enthusiasm. The best part is Nikki Sixx often tweets to followers to meet them by the bus after the show & to bring your cameras. We were fortunate to have Sixx:A.M. do this accoustic performance out back, by their bus after the show. They only played one song, but it was awesome. DJ Ashba did take time to sign autographs & take photos with everyone that was there for the accoustic after-show. Thank you DJ. I wish Nikki Sixx & James Michael would've stayed around a little longer to sign autographs too. We carried Nikki's 2 books all evening in hopes of him signing them, no luck. I guess that the difference between being a "rock star" (Nikki Sixx) or very humble (DJ Ashba). We still love you Nikki, but next time an autograph please.

Hmmmmm what can I say I have been a fan of Nikki Sixx since the early 80's need I say more?? The whole concept of Motley leaving my life was beyond what I could comprehend, so filling that gap came way before I had to deal with that reality thanks to Sixx A.M., as of this date I have seen Sixx A.M. 4 times and they never disappoint me or the crazies on the floor beside me. The Abbotsford B.C. show was the first time for VIP with James and DJ but meeting Nikki this was my 3rd time, the meet and greet could have been more than 2 minutes without the crew saying hurry up but overall the band was smelling good and loved their fans. The show itself with Papa Roach, Five Finger Death Punch and Ashes to New was one of the best shows I have seen since 1983 for US Fest in Cali....so if you want my review you shouldn't need it as Sixx A.M. music speaks for itself...Respect.

Great show, good energy! The sound was awesome! Everyone on stage looked like they were having a great time. It's amazing to me that Nikki will be 58 next month - bass sounded great, and sexy as ever. James is a born front man and helped connect the band with the audience. DJ was fabulous, of course. Such a good show man and excellent guitar player. Drumming was perfect and the ladies added a little extra to round out the show. Can't wait to see them again!

Once again, the guys did not disappoint! The show was amazing!! Classics were covered, new music was covered, nothing was left out!! They put on one hell of a show!!! I had the most amazing luck to meet James and Dustin before the show, get their autographs and actually chat and take a few photos. They are such great guys, laid back, and truly love their fans!! If I had the time and money, I would probably follow them on tour, that's how great it is!

Wow! Sixx:A.M. just keeps getting better and better! James Michael's voice is so freaking amazing!!! DJ Ashba. Need I say more? Amazing. And of course, Sixx is still playing his heart out! This band has proven that they are here to rock your world (or at least they did mine!). It is definitely worth the time and money to see and hear them live. Saw them this year at Welcome to Rockville and then Duluth, GA. I love this band!!!

Frontman James Michael adds, “On the first two albums, Sixx:AM established a musical freedom that few bands get to enjoy. ‘Gotta Get It Right’ is clearly a birth child of that creative freedom and an exciting next step for us as our goal was to create something which confounds both expectation and categorization.” –  by Matt Bishop

Sixx AM confirm Rise single and spring tour

Fans asked to help compile itinary for upcoming dates

sixx am tour 2023

Sixx AM will release new single Rise in March and have asked fans to help them compile a US tour schedule.

The track will appear on the first volume of a double album due out later this year. It’ll be the band’s fourth album and the follow-up to 2014’s Modern Vintage .

Mainman Nikki Sixx says: “We are not a political band, but we are extremely reflective. During the making of this album, we were under the same media siege as the rest of the world, so Rise came out of that and hopefully reminds people that we all have a voice.”

Guitarist DJ Ashba adds: “ Rise is a message of empowerment. It will take on a personal meaning to everyone who hears it, but the message is the same. Whether it’s an individual trying to overcome their own struggles, or a nation as a whole, we can all rise above the negativity, if we stand up for what we believe in.”

Meanwhile, in a video message to fans, frontman James Michael reveals the band will launch a headline tour in the spring.

He says: “We want you to help us decide where we should play, so head on over to sixxammusic.com to demand that we come to your city.”

Sixx:AM Have No Plans To Tour

by Music-News.com on December 14, 2021

Sixx:A.M. have no current plans to tour or release new music.

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx’s side band released the compilation LP ‘Hits’ in October, but frontman James Michael – who is also joined by DJ Ashba, 49, in the heavy metal group – has insisted they do not plan to hit the studio or play shows anytime soon.

However, he refused to rule out reuniting with his bandmates in the future.

Sixx told ‘Rock Lives Here’ podcast: “It’s funny — every time Sixx:A.M.. made an album, we said to ourselves, ‘This is the last album we’re gonna make.’ We said that on ‘The Heroin Diaries’ soundtrack. We said, ‘This is a one-off. We’ll never do this again.’ Then we did ‘This Is Gonna Hurt’, and it was, like, ‘Yeah, this is gonna be our last album, for sure.’ And then we did ‘Modern Vintage’, [and it was], like, ‘This is gonna be our last one.’ So we’ve been saying that since the beginning.

“When we put together this ‘Hits’ album, of course, we had in mind that if this was the last thing that Sixx:A.M. does, we want it to be right and we want it to thoughtful and we want it to be meaningful.

“And so we really set out with that intention; we wanted to kind of put a nice bow on this decade of music that we’ve created.

“So, as of right now, we don’t have any plans for anything — no touring, no new music or anything. And that’s why we’re so excited to be sharing this ‘Hits’ album with everyone because it may be the last thing we do. I don’t know. We’ll see. That’s one thing I’ve learned with Sixx:A.M. — I never say never.”

In 2017, Nikki announced he was putting the trio on the back burner.

On what the future held for Motley Crue, Nikki said they were busy working on their own personal projects, so they wouldn’t be performing together.

He said at the time: “[There are] no tour plans for SIXX:A.M.

“James [Michael] and DJ [Ashba] and me talked at the beginning of this year, and I think that the idea of SIXX:A.M. being a side project has been just the way it’s been, and we went out and started focusing on it being a main project.

And I think DJ has a bunch of stuff he wants to do musically, and he has this media company that he focuses on that he does really good at. And James is a producer and a songwriter.

“Right now is the first time where I’m actually not in a band, and I’m not gonna have radio, and as of January 1st, I don’t have a job.

“Like, what’s gonna happen with this brain with all that free time?”

SIXX:A.M. Announces 'Hits' Album

SIXX:A.M. , the long-running project featuring MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx alongside former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist DJ Ashba and vocalist James Michael , will release the "Hits" album on October 22 via Better Noise Music . The project is a retrospective celebration of the band's biggest hits and fan-favorite songs. And, most notably, it includes six previously unheard songs, marking the band's first official album with new material since 2016.

"Hits" will arrive three days after the highly anticipated release of Sixx 's new memoir "The First 21: How I Became Nikki Sixx" ( Hachette Books ). One of the new songs included on the album is also titled "The First 21" , with its lyrics being inspired by the captivating content of the book.

Now in his 21st year of sobriety, Sixx is incredibly passionate about his craft and wonderfully open about his life in rock and roll. He is globally recognized for his work with people in recovery and has been passionately vocal about the disastrous social effects of the opioid crisis in the USA and worldwide. In the memoir, Sixx , already a three-time New York Times best-selling author, tells the inspirational story of his first 21 years, how Frank Feranna became Nikki Sixx . The book fills in the earlier parts of Sixx 's fascinating true-life story, which fans have partly come to know through MÖTLEY CRÜE 's widely celebrated collaborative autobiography "The Dirt" which was most recently adapted into a hit biopic by Netflix in 2019. "The First 21" also continues Sixx 's tradition of setting the soundtrack to his own life, combining his work as a writer and a musician to offer multi-layered pieces of art.

In 2007, SIXX:A.M. released "The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack" , which acts as a companion piece to Sixx 's best-selling memoir "The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life Of A Shattered Rock Star" , released the same year, introducing the concept of a book soundtrack into popular culture. Both the book and the album were successes upon release, with the book instantly becoming a New York Times best seller in its first week, selling out in bookstores around the U.S. The album spawned the No. 1 single "Life Is Beautiful" , while simultaneously receiving critical acclaim and eventually achieving gold certification in the U.S. Expanding this artistic signature move by Sixx , "The First 21" will now get its own soundtrack with the forthcoming "Hits" album.

To celebrate today's announcement, SIXX:A.M. released another new track from the album, "Skin (Rock Mix)" , accompanied by a striking lyric video. The track originally appeared on the band's second studio album "This Is Gonna Hurt" , and quickly became a fan favorite. The new mix, which makes for a heavier, more anthemic sonic experience, is now available to stream and download across platforms.

"Hits" track listing

01. Life Is Beautiful (3:35) 02. This Is Gonna Hurt (3:56) 03. Lies Of The Beautiful People (3:58) 04. Pray For Me (4:13) 05. Rise (3:53) 06. Stars (3:50) 07. Maybe It's Time (4:21) 08. Skin (3:25) 09. Belly Of The Beast (3:47) 10. Are You With Me Now (4:02) 11. Girl With Golden Eyes (4:20) 12. Accidents Can Happen (4:07) 13. Gotta Get It Right (3:12) 14. We Will Not Go Quietly (4:20)

New bonus tracks:

15. The First 21 (3:20) 16. Talk To Me - Radio Mix (3:39) 17. Penetrate (4:38) 18. Waiting All My Life (3:17) 19. Skin - Rock Mix (3:50) 20. Life Is Beautiful - Piano Vocal (3:06)

SIXX:A.M. 's latest release was a reworked version of its song "Maybe It's Time" , which came out in August 2020 as part of the Artists For Recovery project.

The original version of "Maybe It's Time" appeared on SIXX:A.M. 's latest album, "Vol. 2, Prayers For The Blessed" , which was released in November 2016 via Eleven Seven Music . The disc was written and recorded at the same time as "Vol. 1, Prayers For The Damned" , released earlier that same year, and it acted as a companion piece to the first chapter.

In January 2020, SIXX:A.M. released the official music video for "Talk To Me" . The track, originally released in September 2019, invited each of us to take the first step toward mutual understanding and healing using the power of conversation.

Sixx recently teamed up with Rob Zombie , John 5 (ROB ZOMBIE, MARILYN MANSON) and Tommy Clufetos (OZZY OSBOURNE, BLACK SABBATH, ROB ZOMBIE) in a new project called L.A. RATS . The quartet came together expressly to record a cover of "I've Been Everywhere" for the soundtrack to the movie "The Ice Road" . "I've Been Everywhere" is a song written by Australian country singer Geoff Mack in 1959, and made popular by Lucky Starr in 1962.

MÖTLEY CRÜE 's "The Stadium Tour" with DEF LEPPARD , POISON and JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS was originally scheduled to take place last summer but ended up being pushed back to 2021, and then to 2022, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

James Michael talks his journey as part of Sixx:Am, ‘Modern Vintage’ and retirement

Home » James Michael talks his journey as part of Sixx:Am, ‘Modern Vintage’ and retirement

Dom sits down and speaks to James Michael; Record producer and lead singer of rock band Sixx: AM. On the 12 th of November 2021 Sixx:AM released a new lyric video for the song “Penetrate” which is on the recently released new hits album with all their biggest songs, over the years and fans favourites, also including 5 unheard tracks and mixes. He discusses all things to do with the newly released biggest hits album, his idea of success looking back on his career and retirement.

sixx am tour 2023

When asked what success means to him James believes that:

“Success now is really about feeling proud of your accomplishments, having fewer regrets than you have pride about things that you’ve done, as I look back over my career, I think success comes in the form of respect from your peers and respect from your fans and be able to look people in the eye and be proud of how you’ve conducted yourself over the years.”

Now that the hits album is out, reflecting on Sixx:AM James tells us what the project as a whole means to him:

“I’m extremely proud of it, it’s different than the rest of my career as a producer or a song writer, working with other artists and doing those kinds of things was a full career. With Sixx:AM it became extremely personal, not only Nikki’s journey, not only DJ’s journey but it was my journey and we shared things all about our lives in all our music and exposed things about ourselves, some things I look back on and think oh boy I wish I hadn’t of shared so much about that! And other things I’m like wow I’m so glad we did that.

I love all the Sixx:AM albums but for me personally we reached a real pinnacle right around the ‘Modern Vintage’ time, which is interesting because ‘modern vintage’ is probably the most unlike the rest of our albums, it’s a very unusual album. Sixx:AM to me just represents that childhood dream that I had in growing up and wanting to be a rockstar. Sixx:AM didn’t break until I was 40 years old, so I had success as a song writer and a producer prior to that but I didn’t have my first hit as an artist until I was 40 years old! Sixx:AM represents the dream come true.”

James reflects on the biggest things he’s learnt about himself from the beginning of his career to now:

“What I’ve learned is music isn’t everything, as far as career goes music is a huge part of my life but what I’ve learned these last few years is how important family is, how important friendships are and how important relationships are because with music, it’s going to be hot for a while but then its going to go away at some point the music business is going to say we’ve had enough of James Michael…and that’s okay but to understand that is important. So don’t attach all your sense of self worth on your career accomplishments. That’d be the biggest thing I’ve learned and I’m happier than I’ve ever been.

It’s important to look after yourself while working hard, so some days you may not be the most motivated, James gives some advice on how to stay driven:

“I’ve been so blessed I’ve had such an incredible career and incredible life up until now and if I can’t share that with people that mattered to me, I think I’ve failed myself and them. What motivates me is just waking up everyday and trying to make other peoples lives a bit better.”

So, what is coming next from James Michael?

“I’m basically on the edge of retirement right now, it’s become so important to me now to fill out the other parts of my life and spend as much time as a possible can with my family. So right now, I intentionally don’t have any projects coming up, I’m going to spend time with dogs and family and wait for the next inspiration.”

“When you have fans like we have had with Sixx:AM who are so devoted and such incredible people, it’s a real gift, I’m forever grateful.”
