It’s not the first time Martin has revisited the album ; the group returned to the UK Top 5 back in 2016 with ‘The Lexicon of Love II’ – an album he never saw himself making.

“I mean, 1983 would have been the right time but it did very well,” the singer told RETROPOP earlier this year. “For years I’d been avoiding the idea but after doing an orchestral show at the Royal Albert Hall I looked out into the audience and I could see and feel how much the songs from the original album meant to them.

“They’d been through a time capsule like I had of, you know, kids growing up, failed marriages, businesses falling apart, shit happening to them, and yet there they were singing along. It was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be interesting to see what was happening to them now as elder statesmen?’ and that’s where the germ of the idea for ‘The Lexicon of Love II’ came from.”

It was originally called ‘The Lexicon of a Lost Ideal’ until someone at the record company heard the tracks and suggested the eventual title. “If they’d suggested that at the beginning, I’d never have finished it because it would have been too intimidating,” he laughed.

“But I embraced the idea, like ‘If there can be 37 episodes of ‘Breaking Bad’, why can’t there be another episode of ‘The Lexicon of Love’?”

A decade-defining album, ABC’s ‘Lexicon Of Love’ was a widescreen pop classic that gave the band their international breakthrough.

Culture exploded in a kaleidoscope of color at the dawn of the 80s. Drab Britain had decided to start dressing up and a fresh generation of artists swept through the charts like a new world order – among them Culture Club ( Kissing To Be Clever , 1982), Spandau Ballet ( Journeys To Glory , 1981), and ABC ( The Lexicon Of Love , 1982). At the heart of this music revolution lay technology – bands could now create in their bedrooms sounds that were hitherto unimaginable outside the most sophisticated of studios. Professional recording was also getting slicker, and another innovation – cheaper video – offered for the first time easy access to equipment that could project a band, in the form of a promotional film, to record buyers around the world.

And yet, for all of this novel new approach, there was something rather traditional about it too. Unlike the punks, this latest breed of hit-maker wasn’t interested in abandoning everything that had gone before. Now the best ideas were pilfered from the past and weaved seamlessly back into the present.

‘Hey Girl’: The Small Faces Think Big With Their First Self-Written Hit

‘flaming pie’: a tempting treat from paul mccartney’s kitchen.

ABC ’s Technicolor masterpiece, The Lexicon Of Love , borrowed the rich orchestration of the Norrie Paramor records of great British 60s pop and spun it through Trevor Horn’s crisp production cycle to create something effortlessly modern, but somehow rather classical as well. It sometimes felt as if ABC frontman Martin Fry owed as much to pre- Beatles heartthrob Adam Faith as he did to anything more contemporary.

Martin had joined Mark White and Stephen Singleton in Vice Versa after he interviewed them for a Sheffield fanzine called Modern Drugs . Little of their work reached the wider public, but a couple of singles and a cassette album were released. After seeing Chic in concert, the band retreated from view to work up a new sound. Out went the edgier electronica and in came strings – lots of them – and a more club-oriented approach. Signed to the EMI imprint Neutron, part of the legendary Parlophone label, the band now known as ABC had a hunch that Martin’s sharp lyrical wit would play well against a more rhythmic orchestration.

Their debut single (re-recorded for the album with Trevor Horn), “Tears Are Not Enough,” was a competent piece of club-pop that peaked at No.19 in the UK charts in November 1981. By the following spring’s “Poison Arrow,” the band had paired with the legendary producer, coming off the success of his band The Buggles and the rather unexpected hits he’d had with Dollar. Horn fashioned their rather tinny MOR sound into something that leapt powerfully from transistors belting out Radio 1’s daytime AM broadcasts. “Mirror Mirror (Mon Amour)” and “Hand Held In Black And White” sounded like perfect modern pop, with Martin later billing the work as “widescreen.”

With The Lexicon Of Love , released on June 21, 1982, Trevor, working with future Art Of Noise musicians Anne Dudley, JJ Jeczalik, and Gary Langan, was to find that cinematic scale again. Album opener “Show Me” is a call to arms, insistent in its tone and the perfect sonic manifesto the band had set its sights on – fusing the ambition of groups such as Magazine with the sound of Chic.

ABC - Poison Arrow

“Poison Arrow” was the band’s international breakthrough, making charts around the world and, latterly, even breaching the US Top 40. In the UK it made No.6 and was supported by a strong video. Running alongside the rich orchestration of “Many Happy Returns” and “Valentine’s Day” – issued as a single in Japan – it made up the first side of the LP, which was recorded with Trevor in around six weeks.

“The Look Of Love (Part One)” is that familiar hit on both sides of the Atlantic, peaking at UK No.4 just before the album’s launch and hitting No.18 in the US. That it borrows its title from the Bacharach and David songbook seems perfectly fitting (in fact, the band was to perform a Bacharach and David song, “I Will Never Fall In Love Again,” on their upcoming tour). Dusted down for a 1990 remix that charted again, “The Look Of Love” remains a radio regular in its original form to this day.

ABC - The Look Of Love

“Date Stamp” and “4 Ever 2 Gether” – credited to ABC and Anne Dudley – maintain the set’s steady momentum. In many ways, The Lexicon Of Love felt like a concept album, so tightly did it carry the listener along its 10 tracks. Arch lyrics, swelling strings, and punchy melodies proved a potent draw for record buyers, who rewarded the album with four weeks at the top of the UK charts and a 50-week run in total.

“All Of My Heart” is arguably the album’s crowning moment: a lush ballad that peaked at UK No.5 as the band embarked on a worldwide tour. “The Look Of Love (Part Four)” served as the set’s final bow: a glorious throwback to a former glory that does the job perfectly – inviting the listener to go back to start straight again.

ABC - All Of My Heart

ABC built much of this material into the 55-minute, Julien Temple-produced Mantrap , a LaserDisc and video release that seized on the band’s cinematic appeal. A curiosity even at the time, it failed to find the critical acclaim its parent album had achieved. Perhaps it tried too hard to fill in the visual blanks that fans’ imaginations were doing a much better job of, and, thus far, the film remains unavailable on DVD.

The Lexicon Of Love had created a platform the band ultimately struggled to build from. The success had been so sudden, the praise perhaps a little too loud. Martin famously tried to flush his gold lamé jacket – so evocative of this era and central to the band’s look – down a toilet in Japan, and 1983’s follow-up, Beauty Stab , was a determined attempt to leave the sound and style behind. In time, however, the band would feel comfortable enough to return to it. There are echoes of The Lexicon Of Love in 1987’s Alphabet City and the band’s greatest later success, the glorious When Smokey Sings .

In 2016, Martin announced he had recorded a belated follow-up, The Lexicon Of Love II . There was no Trevor Horn this time, but Anne Dudley was back to help him craft the sound to match his arch, playful lyrics. It takes a brave man to try to recreate past glories and, while the 1982 album would ultimately prove a tough one to beat, The Lexicon Of Love II ’s immediate UK Top 5 placing and widespread acclaim suggested that the gold lamé jacket was feeling a far better fit once more.

WORDS AND IMAGES BILLY SEAGRAVE

It was a night of nostalgia and romance as ABC performed their classic debut album The Lexicon of Love in its entirety, accompanied by the Southbank Sinfonia and conducted by Anne Dudley, who also arranged the original strings on the album. The band, led by the charismatic Martin Fry, delivered a flawless performance that showcased their timeless pop songs and their sophisticated orchestral arrangements.

The concert began with the orchestra assembling on stage and opening with an overture, As the band came onto stage they launched into “When Smokey sings”, which quite simply set a perfect tone for the evening.

Fry gave a brief introduction; he then thanked the audience for their support and dedication over the past 40 years. He then sang, “Viva love”, along with “The night you murdered love”. The crowd, mostly composed of fans who grew up with the band in the 80s, sang along to every word and cheered every note. “Ten below zero”, followed by “One better world”, kept the momentum moving forward. Fry was in fine form throughout the night, displaying his trademark wit and charm, as well as his impressive vocal range. He interacted with the audience frequently, telling stories and anecdotes about the making of the album.

Finishing off the first half of the show was “Ocean Blue”, then finally a song dedicated to his wife, who was in the audience tonight, “Be near to me”, The orchestra added a rich and lush layer of sound to the songs, enhancing their emotional impact and their musical complexity, a fitting end to a wonderful first set.

DSC_0042

The Audience were back in there seats as the orchestra took there places for the second half, Conductor Anne Dudley gets the show underway, Fry emerges wearing a candy pink suit and immediately goes into, “Show me”, The band, consisting of Pete Rinaldi on guitar, Andy Carr on bass, Richard Brook on drums, Steve Turner on piano, Fergus Gerrand on percussion, Ryan Farmery on keys, Bob Hughes on saxophone, and Tracy Graham on backing vocals, were tight and energetic, playing with passion and precision. The band played the album in its original sequence, from the upbeat “Poison Arrow” and “The Look of Love”, and “4 Ever 2 Gether”. to the melancholic “All of My Heart” bringing the set to a close.

The concert ended with a standing ovation from the audience, who demanded an encore. The band obliged and played two more songs: another song from “The Lexicon of Love” , and The “Look of Love” (Part 4), “Look of love” (Part 1). A reprise of their biggest hit. The crowd joined Fry in singing the chorus, creating a memorable finale. As the band and the orchestra took their final bows, Fry thanked the audience once more, and said: “We are ABC, and this is The Lexicon of Love. Good night, Manchester!”

The concert was a testament to the enduring appeal and quality of ABC’s music, and to the talent and vision of Fry, Dudley, and the Southbank Sinfonia. It was a rare and special opportunity to hear one of the best pop albums of all time performed live with a full orchestra.

Martin Fry - A Lexicon of Life

A Look At Life And A Look Of Love

The hits earned their place in pop history. From Poison Arrow to The Look Of Love, from All Of My Heart, and Be Near Me, to When Smokey Sings, ABC were the band that redefined glamour and cool. Led by the charismatic Martin Fry, they enjoyed TransAtlantic success as The Lexicon of Love proved as artful as a Warhol silkscreen, and glossier than Marilyn’s lipstick. ABC’s The Lexicon of Love was a brilliantly distinctive debut album, fizzing with bright ideas, and unapologetically flamboyant.

Frontman Martin Fry harked back to a golden era of luxe, as though Cole Porter had been re-imagined among the narrow streets of Sheffield. Little wonder his sleek, opulent, and beautiful debut retains the affection of listeners four decades on. With good reason, it has stood the test of time. And so has Martin Fry, who will bring an evening of stripped-back music and conversation to UK theatres in celebration.

His intimate tour follows a sold-out tour of the UK, which included three sell out nights at London Palladium, and coincides with the publication of his autobiography. That’s the look, that’s the look… The Look of love.

* Meet’n’greet packages and VIP packages are both available.

Jennifer Lopez shimmers in sheer gown and over 100 carats of diamonds on 2024 Met Gala red carpet

This is her…at the Met Gala 2024.

While Jennifer Lopez is no stranger to a stunning red carpet gown, she definitely pulled out all the stops for the first Monday in May.

Walking the red carpet at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the “Jenny From the Block” singer, 54, looked incredible in a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture design.

The mermaid-style gown was made from sheer tulle and covered in sparkling rhinestones and pearls, finishing off with a flowing train.

Per a press release from the fashion brand, the stunning dress featured 2,500,000 silver foil bugles and beads and took 800 hours of hand embroidery work.

She brought plenty of bling in the form of an enormous Tiffany & Co. necklace, with the piece featuring more than 75 carats of diamonds, including one stone weighing a whopping 20 carats.

In total, the star was dripping in more than 100 carats of Tiffany & Co. diamonds.

She added matching earrings and a bracelet, wearing platform Andrea Wazen heels to match her dress.

As per usual, Lopez’s glam was also on point, with the star wearing her hair pulled up in a high bun and finishing her look with glowing, bronzed makeup.

While her dress didn’t necessarily tie directly to the event’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” her diamond hummingbird-shaped necklace certainly fit the bill for the nature-centered event.

She’s also serving as one of the Met Gala’s co-chairs alongside Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, who wore Maison Margiela and Tom Ford, respectively.

Although the “Maid in Manhattan” actress skipped star-studded fundraiser in 2022, she returned to the Met Gala red carpet last year in statement-making Ralph Lauren design, showing off her abs in a black and pink gown that featured a revealing crisscross cutout design in the front.

In 2021, she had a Western-inspired moment , leaning into the “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” theme with a wide-brim hat and cowboy gear, also by Ralph Lauren.

Still, while Lopez may have no problem stealing the spotlight with her looks, she’s set to officially take center stage this summer, performing her new tour, “This Is Me…Live | The Greatest Hits,” which she rebranded as a career-spanning concert rather than focus on her latest album.

The series of concerts follows the release of her work, “This Is Me…Now,” as well as a musical film,  “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,”  and her documentary,  “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.”

Josh O'Connor is back at the Met Gala!

While Zendaya's press tour fashion has dominated headlines in recent weeks, O'Connor's style choices have also been notable, and he did not disappoint tonight. For the "Garden of Time" theme , the actor wore an outfit designed by Loewe—which makes sense, as the brand's creative director, Jonathan Anderson, was the costume designer for Challengers. O'Connor's tuxedo that featured oversized, dramatic tailcoat, a beaded shirt, and a sparkling bowtie.

His shoes appear to be very similar to ones from the Loewe Fall/Winter 2024 collection:

In a recent interview, O'Connor shared his love for gardening, perhaps inspiring his shoes tonight. "Gardening is, at its heart, a small act of life. You tend to this thing, which gives you some joy for, particularly in the UK, like, two months of the year. Then it dies and you tend to it again, you enjoy it, then it dies. It’s repetitive and pointless, but we do it," he told the Guardian . "I love making work, but I also love being in my garden and tending to plants and watching them live and die. That contrast, I’m hoping, will keep me grounded."

O'Connor made his Met Gala debut in 2021 , and has since called the evening a "disaster." "I was waiting for a long time, and the whole thing with the Met is the entrance and the photograph. And someone just said go, and I did, and I didn't get a single photograph," O'Connor said on Good Morning America .

He was exaggerating a little; there are some snaps of him wearing custom Dunhill, in partnership with designer Connor McKnight:

Hopefully this year's carpet was a much better experience for O'Connor.
