The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest Mission: Impossible Stunt Yet

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

Skydiving. Motorcycle jumps. Cliff jumping. It’s not a Mission: Impossible movie if Tom Cruise isn’t doing some crazy-ass stunts, and *Dead Reckoning Part 1—*the latest in the franchise, out this week—doesn't hold back in that regard (seriously, this BTS featurette is wild ). It also isn’t a Mission: Impossible if Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is doing said stunts while looking like a total badass (which the actor somehow pulls off at the age of 61, bless).

With a reported $291 million budget, you better believe that every damn detail is considered, and that ranges from meticulously training Cruise on how to jump out of a plane to the very glasses that sit on his face. For the latter, they didn’t just go out and buy some shades at the local gas station—no, they leveraged the help of Oakley, who has been making performance-minded eyewear since 1975.

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

The end result is surprisingly low-key—a pair of goggles that are so clear and minimal, they’re practically invisible. And yet, so much thought and effort went into making them so. “Without a doubt safety and performance are first,” says Nick Garfias, Oakley’s VP of Design who spearheaded the project. “Then making sure that we designed a goggle that was not going to disrupt his image. This meant a very thin seamless frame, lightweight looking and lightweight feeling.”

Cruise worked with Oakley on past Mission: Impossible films—including the very sick Romeo shades from M:I-2 —so the relationship was already in place. Garfias noted that the movie’s prop master, David Cheesman (whom Garfias calls his “partner in crime”), and Oakley’s own in-house film and TV placement team were key to making this impossible made-to-measure pair, well, possible. After all, they weren’t merely requesting some existing styles but a bespoke frame that could handle some very specific, very high-stakes challenges.

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

“[We knew] Ethan was going to perform an amazing stunt combination of motorcycle riding and skydiving,” Garfias says. “I believe the ask was pretty straightforward: we had to ensure that this piece of eyewear was going to perform both on a motorcycle as well as the jump and the freefall while skydiving—and of course he had to look good doing it.”

This process started during the pandemic, so the process included the requisite Zoom calls and a full head scan of Cruise to ensure a perfect fit. A key aspect, says Cheesman was Oakley’s 3D printing capabilities, which allowed them to quickly craft mock-ups that were then sent to Cruise and Cheesman for trial—shipped out to the various corners of the world in which they were filming. “We did many iterations because we really needed to make sure that there weren't any unforeseen hiccups,” Garfias said. “We sent multiple versions per week with slight changes to each. Everything was cataloged by serial number so that we could reference the inputs we were receiving from David. We had to make sure that we never compromised optics, fit, fogging, and retention at all times. The only template that we used was the user insights—all from Cruise.” After all you do not, one assumes, want to be the person responsible for ruining Tom’s perfect take (or, worse, ending his life).

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's Custom Oakley Glasses for His Wildest 'Mission Impossible' Stunt Yet

It all worked out in the end, of course, and we have a series of white-knuckle action sequences to prove it. While Garfias wasn’t given a special preview, he did say he got to meet Cruise, which was a real highlight. “So much intensity and charisma, but this is what we were used to,” he says. “It's like talking to an athlete. He knew exactly what he wanted, what he didn’t want and why. He really leaned on us for the innovation and creativity while maintaining a great piece of performance that he can rely on in the most tense moments in the filming.”

As for what Oakley has coming up, Garfias hints that a consumer-ready version may hit stores—and that another custom pair is on the way for next year's Dead Reckoning Part 2 .

“Wait to see what we have prepared with Tom on MI8,” Garfias says.

Correction : 7/17: The original article misspelt the name of Oakley's Nick Garfias and incorrectly identified the film's prop master.

Tom Cruise Pulled Off The Biggest Stunt In Cinema History in ‘Mission: Impossible 7’

"You know the only thing you have to avoid while doing a stunt like this is serious injury or death..."

Tom Cruise Pulled Off The Biggest Stunt In Cinema History in ‘Mission: Impossible 7’

Tom Cruise’s latest movie Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has received widespread acclaim since it premiered worldwide this week, with Cruise upping the stakes for the seventh instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise. But ahead of release to the general public, there’s one unbelievable stunt that has left everybody wondering… ‘How did they do it?!’

One cold September day in 2020, on Norway’s picturesque Helsetkopen mountain range, the ripples of a modified Honda CRF 250 motorbike engine cascaded across the vast glacial scene, as Tom Cruise and a Hollywood film crew put years of preparation into practice, to undertake the biggest stunt in cinema history.

The stunt was filmed on the first day of principal photography, “in classic Mission form,” says director Christopher McQuarrie, in which Cruise would charge a custom-built motorcycle over a sheer mountain edge and freefall almost 4000 feet before deploying a parachute canopy before certain death.

To pull something off of this magnitude required years of meticulous planning and training to achieve perfect execution. “There’s a lot going into this stunt. So Tom put together this master plan to coordinate all of these experts in each of the particular disciplines involved, to make this whole thing happen.”

WATCH Tom Cruise’s biggest stunt ever below.

“Don’t be careful. Be competent.” Tom Cruise

Hollywood’s movie maverick Tom Cruise is well known for his daring on-screen stunts, whether it’s climbing a 2000-foot cliff in the opening scene of  Mission: Impossible II ; hanging onto the edge of a huge Airbus A400M plane as it takes off in  Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation ; or ascending 1700 feet up the tallest building in the world with no more than a harness for  Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol , Cruise is the king of on-camera chaos, bringing the Mission: Impossible story to dizzying new heights with each subsequent flick – literally.

The preparation for such a stunt was immense that Cruise had to master a year of BASE training and advanced skydive training, doing 30 jumps a day and 500 skydives to perfect his canopy skills and spacial awareness, tracking, freefalling and positioning.

This continued with specialised motocross training, carrying out over 13,000 individual jumps to determine the perfect speed, distance and overall trajectory of the final stunt. This is a feat in itself, not considering the fact that Cruise’s bike had no internal speedometer, so with each successive launch, he had to become so perfectly aligned with the determining factors of his jumps, using no more than his body to land effectively and safely.

“The key is me hitting certain speeds and being consistent with that. There’s no speedometer, so I do it by sound and feel of the bike. And then as I depart the bike, I’m using the wind that’s hitting me here and I’m cupping my chest. That will give me lift,” Cruise explains.

In Norway, where the final stunt was to take place for Mission: Impossible 7 , a swarm of helicopters were brought in to expertly assemble the “masterful” track and ramp. Following years of precise preparation, the conditions were right for the real thing.

Defying gravity, fear and limitations require a specific piece of kit. For his death-defying stunt, Tom Cruise’s goggles in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One were Oakley’s one-of-a-kind ECLP23, featuring High-Speed Protection, an expanded field of view and Zero Gravity making sure that the eyewear was a perfect fit for his face, leaving no room for error as Cruise freefalls over a cliff edge with no stunt double in sight.

Cruise would perform the final stunt a total of eight times off the sheer edge of the Helsetkopen mountains, at a height of 4,000 feet into a jagged and unforgiving ravine. “Every time I went off the ramp, it was dangerous,” explained Cruise. “It was risking my life. And we wanted to keep that to a minimum.”

The final cut is pure cinematic perfection; an addictive action sequence that raises the stakes in this latest saga of Ethan Hunt’s adrenaline-filled anthology. So there’s no surprise then that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has received a score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and is set to be the highest-rated movie of the Mission: Impossible franchise.

As director, Christopher McQuarrie says: “This is far and away the most dangerous thing we’ve ever attempted. The only thing that scares me more is what we have planned for Mission 8 …”

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Sunglasses – Tom Cruise

We’re an affiliate As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you whatsoever.

The trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One just dropped and Tom Cruise is running away at top speed from things blowing up again. Hey, it’s what he does. Mission: Impossible 7 is not due out until 2023, but we’re keeping a close eye on the sunglasses featured throughout the newest Tom Cruise action adventure.

It’s early days so we’re still investigating but looking at the trailer frame by frame, there are a few Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Sunglasses to look out for. It’s always fun to look out for Tom Cruise Sunglasses in general, the man has good taste in eyewear and when he needs something more technical he goes for it too.

As seen in the image above, there is a very brief glimpse of Tom Cruise wearing Aviator-style sunglasses in the trailer for Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning . Tom Cruise was of course recently seen wearing Ray-Ban Aviator RB3025 sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick , though the sunglasses seen here in Mission: Impossible 7 have a more rounded shape and a different bridge style.

Tom Cruise wears Cartier Aviator Style Sunglasses in Mission: Impossible 7

Tom Cruise is known to be a fan of Randolph Sunglasses , so we initially wondered if he could have gotten a pair of Randolphs into the film, though after careful research we have been able to identify the sunglasses in Mission: Impossible 7 as Cartier .

Tom Cruise wearing Santos De Cartier Sunglasses - CT0038S - On set of Mission Impossible 7

Tom Cruise was seen on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 wearing these sunglasses, which appear to be the same ones featured in the Dead Reckoning movie trailer. On closer inspection, the branding in the top corner of the right lens is clearly the Cartier logo.

The sunglasses worn by Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning are Santos De Cartier Sunglasses – model number CT0038S 016 . These high-end Aviator style sunglasses are gold rimmed and blue with gold mirror lenses. They also include a removable black calfskin leather sweatband on the temples.

These stunning Cartier sunglasses are finished with an identifiable Santos screw decor on the bridge and temples. These really are the sunglasses of choice for the rich and famous. If you’re looking to add these to your collection you may not get much change from $1,000 or £700.

Santos De Cartier Sunglasses - CT0038S 016

You may need to shop around for these Cartier sunglasses as Mission: Impossible 7 was in production during the pandemic and these may be hard to find by the time the film is released in 2023. We found them on Pret A Voir at the time of writing.

Get the Look on a Budget

Alternatively, if you want to get a similar look for a much cheaper price, we’d suggest going for a pair of Tom Cruise Top Gun sunglasses – the old faithful Ray-Ban Aviator RB3025 sunglasses are easily available on Amazon and you’ll save yourself hundreds!

Tom Cruise Wearing Goggles in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One - Tom Cruise wearing Goggles

Tom Cruise is seen several times throughout the trailer wearing what could be tactical goggles. The first two images here appear to be the same goggles with clear, or lightly tinted lenses. Tom Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt is seen wearing these goggles in a desert environment where they would be essential to protecting the eyes from dust and debris.

The third image here looks like it could be a different pair of goggles altogether or maybe even oversized tactical sunglasses, but it’s pretty hard to see any details from the short clip in the trailer below .

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One - Tactical Goggles

In the 4th image above, Tom Cruise is seen performing an impressive-looking stunt riding a motorcycle off a cliff and freefalling while wearing a pair of white goggles with clear lenses. Perfect for skydiving no doubt. Check out this incredible footage of the stunt filming process.

Although no branding can be seen in any of these images it has been confirmed in a GQ interview that the goggles used in the amazing motorcycle base jump are a custom-designed pair of Oakley ECLP23 goggles created in direct collaboration with Tom Cruise specifically for the movie.

Sadly these Oakley goggles are not currently available for sale but watch this space. Apparently, it is confirmed that there will also be another awesome Oakley X Tom Cruise collaboration in the next movie – Dead Reckoning Part 2 (M:I8), so we are pretty excited to see what they come up with there too.

In the meantime, you might enjoy checking out Angelina Jolie’s ESS Goggles in our post on Those Who Wish Me Dead .

More Mission: Impossible Sunglasses

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One - Round Sunglasses

Tom Cruise isn’t the only one who gets to wear sunglasses in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning . While it’s likely that more characters will be seen in a cool pair of shades, these sunglasses worn by Marcello Walton are probably the most striking image from the trailer.

We’re still looking to confirm exactly what sunglasses Marcello Walton is wearing, but they could easily be described as rounded Steampunk-style sunglasses . These even have soft side shields at the temples – popular with Steampunk styles or sometimes seen on sunglasses used in high altitudes, such as mountain locations.

These Side-Shield Sunglasses by Curry & Paxton are a very close match, so if you’re just looking for the style, these could be a good option. Or, you could find a good budget alternative on Amazon here .

Esai Morales Mission: Impossible Sunglasses

Esai Morales plays Gabriel in Mission: Impossible 7. We don’t have an image as yet, but it appears that he wears Ray-Ban RB3025 Aviator sunglasses during the airport scene. These are easily available on Amazon here .

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Sunglasses in the Trailer

You can see some of these sunglasses in the awesome-looking trailer here.

We’ll update this post as we find out more about any other sunglasses featured in the new M:I 7 movie. Meanwhile, if you’re a Tom Cruise fan (who isn’t), don’t forget to check out his classic Aviator sunglasses in Top Gun: Maverick .

Tom Cruise Teams Up With Oakley For The ‘Zero Gravity’ ECLP23 Eyewear

Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” showcases what many are calling the biggest stunt in history. In it, he rides his bike up on a ramp set on a cliffside in Norway, jumps off the cliff ditching his motorcycle in the process, and then base jumps to the valley below. A behind-the-scenes video showed him trying to perfect the death-defying stunt several times (six times!) and in it, one critical piece was involved, a new one-off eyewear from Oakley called ECLP23.

Oakley worked closely with the action star in designing this eyepiece. It was molded specifically to fit his face, thus allowing for speed protection and the clearest and expanded field of view even at high speeds.

It is what the brand is calling “Zero Gravity” because, unlike its vast collection of eyewear, Oakley does away with the traditional stem/hinge design for the ECLP23. This is one-of-a-kind performance eyewear that is, unfortunately, not for sale. It’s a prototype designed for use in the Tom Cruise film alone.

But you can see these specs in person when they will be on display throughout the summer at Oakley Headquarters at One Icon in Foothill Ranch, California. You can also see Tom Cruise sport the Oakley ECLP23 glasses during the filming of the stunt (see below). Cruise, the movie production team, and a host of experts spent years setting up the dangerous stunt and getting the perfect shot. The film’s director Christopher McQuarrie says in the video that the actor “put together this master plan to coordinate all of these experts in each of particular disciplines involved to make this whole thing happen.”

Oakley Made Custom Glasses for Tom Cruise’s Craziest ‘Mission Impossible’ Stunt Ever

Oakley x Mission Impossible Glasses 0 Hero

By: Cameron Cardwell Published: Jul 17, 2023

The Mission Impossible movies are one of the few recurring productions that’s lasted as long as it has while continuing to up the ante with each stunt. Much of this is thanks to Tom Cruise’s willingness to (and passion for) helping create the stunts and then doing them himself (even into his early 60s). From climbing the Burj Khalifa to hanging off a passenger plane’s door as it takes off, every entry into the series is more daring than the last. And in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the team pulls off what many consider to be not only the biggest stunt in the franchise, but in recent movie history as well. In order to give Ethan Hunt the proper equipment for jumping a bike off a large ramp (on top of an even larger mountain), Oakley was tapped to create a custom pair of glasses , the ECLP23, that could get the job done.

Oakley x Mission Impossible Glasses 1

These glasses were custom-built for a significantly dangerous stunt (for Hunt and Cruise), so it was essential that they offered enough protection. And Oakley was the perfect choice for the job, with a trusted track record of making performance eyewear since the ‘70s. The ECLP23 glasses feature High Speed Protection and an expanded field of view (so vision isn’t lost on the side). This “Zero Gravity” design was built around Tom Cruise’s face, and it features a fastened band instead of the traditional temples.

Oakley x Mission Impossible Glasses 2

Although you can’t buy these particular glasses, Oakley’s Plazma lineup certainly has a similar vibe, and you can catch Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One now to see the custom shades in action.

If that’s not enough, you can see the ECLP23 glasses in the Oakley Headquarters at One Icon this summer, and check out what went down behind the scenes.

Tom Cruise Teams With Oakley to Make This ‘Mission: Impossible’ Stunt Possible

Cruise helped develop the one-of-a-kind eyewear he used during a jaw-dropping stunt for ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.’

mm

Where does international super spy Ethan Hunt go when he needs super performance eyewear?

(No. Not Q. That’s that other guy.)

When the mission seems impossible, he turns to the experts at Oakley.

Tom Cruise, who plays the fictional character Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible movies, teamed up with Oakley to design and produce the perfect eyewear for one of the most daring (not to mention dangerous) stunts ever attempted in the history of the franchise.

Cruise is well known for doing his own stunts during filming. (Check out this list of his 13 wildest stunts from just the Mission: Impossible films.) For Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , which hits theaters today, Cruise pulled off arguably the most jaw-dropping stunt of his career. He drove a motorcycle off a Norwegian cliff and then base jumped to the valley below. To make sure he got the shot right, he then did it five (!) more times.

Advertisement View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Tom Cruise (@tomcruise)

“I’ve wanted to do it since I was a little kid,” says Cruise in a video (see below) detailing what went into the stunt. “It all comes down to one thing: The audience.”

Cruise, the movie production team, and an array of experts spent months setting up the shot.

“There’s a lot going into this stunt, so Tom put together this master plan to coordinate all of these experts in each of particular disciplines involved to make this whole thing happen,” says director Christopher McQuarrie in the video.

  • Cruise went through a year of base jump training and advanced skydiving training.
  • He made upwards of 30 skydives a day.
  • He totaled more than 500 skydives overall.
  • He performed more than 13,000 motocross jumps.

“You train and drill every little aspect of this over and over and over and over again,” says Cruise.

He later added, as he flashed his trademark smile while heading out for another training session, “What do we say to each other? Don’t be careful. Be confident.”

Part of that confidence, no doubt, stemmed from his performance eyewear.

The Cruise/Oakley collaboration resulted in the ECLP23. The one-of-a-kind prototype eyewear was fitted to Cruise’s face perfectly. The eyewear features high speed protection, an expanded field of view, and zero gravity.

You can see more product shots provided by Oakley below. Also, there are a few screenshots of Cruise wearing the frames during filming of the stunt.

Unfortunately, these specs aren’t for sale. However, you can see them in person. They will be on display throughout the summer at Oakley Headquarters at One Icon in Foothill Ranch, CA.

If you find a trek to SoCal an impossible mission, you can always see Cruise and his Oakley eyewear in action this weekend at your local movie house. The seventh installment in the franchise is expected to have a massive opening weekend . You can check out reviews here .

Oakley Glasses Stun In Tom Cruise’s Latest Mission: Impossible

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

In high-octane, stunt-filled movies like the Mission: Impossible franchise, optimal protection for the cast is a must.

As such, the crew behind the latest installment in the franchise— Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 — enlisted the help of performance eyewear brand Oakley to provide custom glasses for the film.

tom cruise motorcycle goggles

Credit: @missionimpossible on Instagram

This partnership is not the first for the series, as Oakley’s Romeo sunglasses also appeared in Mission: Impossible 2.

However, this recent collaboration amped up the game as Tom Cruise, who plays IMF agent Ethan Hunt, wore a pair of ECLP23, clear wraparound goggles with a lightweight feel and look owing to its minimal design and thin frames, in the film’s biggest stunt.

Shades for stunts

The Mission: Impossible series is known for its thrilling stunts that border on over-the-top, which is one of the reasons why it has remained a successful franchise over the years.

Tom Cruise has never faltered in bringing the action and does most of the practical stuntwork himself.

Scaling the Burj Khalifa, hanging off the side of a plane, and performing a motorcycle jump off a mountain is a difficult feat, even for Cruise, who had to undergo rigorous and risky training to pull them off.

Apart from needing protection for dangerous stunts, having a cool yet practical look is crucial for a super spy movie to keep the tone and mood intact.

The gear is critical for tying everything together, ensuring the actor is safe but not goofy-looking in a way that looks out of place for the film. That need for super agent suave and maximum safety is why the ECLP23 goggles needed careful customization from all fronts.

Prop master Barry Gibbs and Oakley’s VP of design, Nick Garfias, teamed up with Cruise to ensure the goggles were a perfect fit for the actor and the scene.

Multiple Zoom calls, full head scans, and numerous 3D printed mock-ups were needed to perfect the goggles, ensuring they never compromised optics, fit, fogging, and retention.

The resulting custom glasses are comfortable to wear and not too obstructive, giving the proper visibility and protection suited for a nail-biting motorcycle mountain jump and skydive.

Why Oakley?

It’s not a surprise why the Oakley brand was the prime choice for the seventh Mission: Impossible, as it strikes an outstanding balance between function and fashion regarding eyewear.

The brand initially focused on creating eyewear for sports like cycling and running but soon delved into creating lifestyle frames that kept the quality of their sports shades combined with a wearable look for daily life.

Today, Oakley has collections of both lifestyle and performance sunglasses that feature the latest technologies.

Their iconic Frogskins and Sutro styles are still popular in the market, and the ability to customize frames and lenses to suit your needs makes Oakley one of the top brands for performance and everyday eyewear.

Oakley x Tom Cruise ECLP23 Eyewear

Tom Cruise has continuously put his life on the line for our entertainment in the Mission Impossible franchise. But nothing will compare to the stunts he pulled off in the latest installment. The actor ramped a motorcycle off a cliff in Norway and base jumped from the bike to the ground. Aside from the years of training and strategizing with the crew, Cruise also needed the right equipment. That's why the real-life Ethan Hunt partnered with Oakley. Together, they created the ECLP23 Eyewear. Free of any frame, the prototype is completely transparent and has a shield-like shape, offering an expanded field of view, and a Zero Gravity feel. To ensure the glasses stayed in place during the stunt, they were custom fit to the actor's face. See the masterpiece unfold when Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One premieres in theaters on July 12, 2023.

Like fine timepieces, quality pens require detailed craftsmanship. That's evident in the perpetual calendar mechanism of the Anytime pen from Paolo Favaretto and Montegrappa. I saw a very boring movie today with Tom Cruise called Oblivion. He was riding a futuristic dirt bike and wearing a goggle that looked much like a pair of Pennies. Anyone know the brand and model?

The Story Behind Tom Cruise's 'Oblivion' Bike

How do you produce a motorcycle that wouldn't look out of place in a movie about a post-apocalyptic earth?

That was the problem facing director Joseph Kosinski as he prepared for the Tom Cruise thriller Oblivion .

Luckily for moviegoers across the country, Kosinski was able to score one of the most respected motorcycle men in Hollywood to lend him a hand. Justin Kell, owner of Glory Motor Works, has built motorcycles for several high profile movies, including Gangster Squad and G.I. Joe: Retaliation .

For Oblivion , which is set in the year 2077, Kell transformed a dirt bike into a futuristic motorcycle.

"The bike stuff we got to do was fun," Kell told the Los Angeles Times . "We don't get called in when a bike has to sit on a static set and look cool. We get called in when it has to jump 50 feet on top of a volcano in Iceland. Tom [Cruise] is an experienced enough rider and good enough that he knows exactly what he wants."

But there was more to the production than simply creating a cool-looking bike.

"It's not just the look of it," Cruise said recently , "it had to be safe enough for me to travel at very high speeds."

Cruise and Kosinski loved the final product, and it truly fits in in the movie. But Cruise won't have to wait until 2077 to ride it again. For his 50th birthday, which fell during filming in Iceland, he was presented with one of the bikes from the film .

Tom Cruise’s sunglasses in Oblivion

Brands & Films

It’s been a while since I watched Oblivion . It’s a 2013 a post-apocalyptic science fiction movie, made for $120 million. The movie underperformed in the USA, grossing only $89m, but done much better internationally with $197m. Oblivion is Cruise’s twentieth film to gross more than $200 million worldwide and that’s a great achievement.

The movie is set in 2077, some 60 years after an alien invasion made the Earth in a state of disrepair. Tom Cruise is Jack Harper, a technician and one of few people left on Earth (the other survivors have moved to Titan). Jack’s job is to service robot drones that defend power stations from aliens.

Oblivion is maybe too ambitious and imperfect, but at least visual effects are top notch. They include a post-cataclysmic New York and D.C., with such landmarks as the Empire State Building, the Pentagon, the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

There are no brands in 2077, however there is (at least) one branded product visible in the movie. It can be seen in Tom’s flashbacks that show him in front of the Empire State Building with a girl (I won’t reveal much more).

I’ve noticed that Cruise was wearing Randolph Engineering aviator sunglasses .

You can buy them at RE website .

While driving a motorcycle Tom was also wearing goggles. They might be Wiley X’s model SG-1 .

There’s also Morgan Freeman and his version of mountaineering sunglasses.

Morgan might be wearing Julbo’s Vermont Classic mountaineering sunglasses.

Where to buy Tom Cruise's iconic aviator sunglasses from Top Gun: Maverick

By Allie Johnson

What sunglasses does Tom Cruise wear in Top Gun: Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick," Tom Cruise's fighter pilot character wears Ray-Ban Aviator Classics (model 3025), also known as the Ray-Ban original. He wears gold frames with green lenses, an iconic color combination that has become known as "Top Gun sunglasses."

History of Top Gun and Ray-Ban Aviators

Ray-Ban Aviators were created in the 1930s as pilot sunglasses to help shield aviators' eyes from the glare of the sun above the clouds. Over the years, Ray-Ban Aviators became an American icon, often spotted on celebrities from Audrey Hepburn and James Dean to Michael Jackson and Madonna.

So Ray-Ban Aviators were a natural fit for a movie about fighter pilots. In the 1986 blockbuster movie "Top Gun," Tom Cruise wore the same style of aviators that he wears in the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick." Thanks to the popularity of the original "Top Gun" movie, both sunglasses sales and interest in military aviation took off.

The movie "Top Gun" is based on the U.S. Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Course, also known as TOPGUN, at the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The school opened in California in 1969 to better train fighter pilots for combat in the Vietnam War. It became famous thanks to "Top Gun," and Ray-Ban Aviators also got their moment in the sun.

Tom Cruise, “Top Gun” and Ray-Ban

Before starring in "Top Gun," Tom Cruise already had ties with Ray-Ban. He wore a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers in "Risky Business," the racy teen comedy that came out three years earlier in 1983.

In "Top Gun," Ray-Ban Aviators played a key part in Tom Cruise's style. His look was cool, tough and edgy. In addition to Cruise's Maverick, these other "Top Gun" characters also wore Ray-Ban Aviators:

"Top Gun sunglasses" — Ray-Ban Aviators with gold frames and green lenses.

Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer ( Ray-Ban Shooter 3138 )

Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards ( Ray-Ban Caravan 3136 )

Marcus "Sundown" Williams, played by Clarence Gilyard (Ray-Ban Aviator 3513)

Ron "Slider" Kerner, played by Rick Rossovich ( Ray-Ban Aviator 3025 )

Air Boss Johnson, played by Duke Stroud (Ray-Ban Outdoorsman 3030)

The original "Top Gun" movie sent sales of Ray-Ban Aviators soaring. The brand reportedly saw sales skyrocket by 40% after the movie’s release — higher than an F-14 fighter jet with Maverick in the cockpit.

Who is Tom Cruise's Maverick?

In the 2022 movie "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original 1986 movie "Top Gun," iconic American actor Tom Cruise plays Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. So, who is Maverick? He's a fictional lieutenant and fighter pilot at the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" school for pilots. He's brave, charismatic and cocky.

Maverick is known for doing daredevil stunts in the air, playing volleyball in his free time, and for wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses . In the 1986 movie, his wingman is Nicholas "Goose" Bradshaw, a fellow fighter pilot who also wears aviators .

In the new Top Gun movie, Maverick returns to the Top Gun school as a flight instructor, still sporting his iconic aviators and the same edgy style from the original "Top Gun" movie.

Tom Cruise sunglasses: Where to buy

The best place to buy Tom Cruise's "Top Gun" aviators is the Ray-Ban website . They offer a huge selection of aviators, including the style and color combination Tom Cruise wears in "Top Gun: Maverick" and in the original .

The Aviator Classic sunglasses, sometimes known as "Tom Cruise aviators," come in 12 frame-and-lens combinations, including:

Gold frames with green lenses

Black frames with black lenses

Silver frames with gray mirror lenses

Gunmetal frames with green lenses

Gold frames with blue lenses

Gold frames with violet lenses

Ray-Ban also sells a variety of other styles of sunglasses, including the ones worn by other characters in "Top Gun: Maverick." For example, you can buy Ray-Ban Shooters or Ray-Ban Caravan Aviators.

If you normally wear glasses for vision correction, you can also get Ray-Ban prescription sunglasses . In fact, you can buy Ray-Ban Aviator Classics with prescription lenses.

The importance of UV protection and quality sunglasses

Wearing quality sunglasses is just as important for you as it is for a fighter pilot.

That's because the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can hurt your eyes and the surrounding skin, possibly leading to cataracts, eye growths and skin cancer around the eyes. Wearing a pair of quality sunglasses, even on cloudy days, can help keep your eyes healthy.

Choose sunglasses that offer 100% protection from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. To cut down on glare, look for sunglasses with polarized lenses . Much like the glare pilots face while in the cockpit, glare reflected off water and other surfaces can make it hard to see clearly.

If you want prescription sunglasses , ask your optician what lenses and lens coatings will work best for your needs. No matter what sunglasses you get, make sure they will protect your eyes anytime you're in the sun, whether you're flying, driving or just lounging by the pool.

These sunnies rep a lot of what military pilots have worn for decades. Yes, they're timelessly stylish, and Ray-Ban's model comes in a couple of different sizes to flatter most face shapes. If you have an average face width then you'll be good to get the 55 mm size but if you think you'll need to size up go with the 58 mm. The difference in sizing hardly effects the weight, so whichever you go with you'll still have a pair of metal frames that are light as a feather (about 1.1 oz).

And if you're looking to upgrade your Tom-approved Ray-Bans, you can get the 3025 in a polarized version . The cost is about $50 more but if you anticipate throwing these into your daily style rotation—which is a legitimate power move—then the price bump is worth the investment.

Sometimes the best style upgrades can be found by looking at what's always worked. Grab a pair of these bad boys and officially enter your "summer cool guy" status.

Glendale motorcycle shop created Tom Cruise’s ‘Oblivion’ bike

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Moviegoers and movie critics have come away from “Oblivion” raving about the vavoom vehicles in the box-office hit starring Tom Cruise -- especially lead character Jack’s futuristic folding motocross bike.

Known on the set as “Jack’s moto bike,” the wispy ghost-white bike wheelies its way across a landscape of desert salt flats -- actually, volcanic sand in Iceland -- and transports the hero into and out of trouble throughout director Joseph Kosinski’s dystopian film.

The “moto bike,” though, was a Honda CRF450X before local motorcycle-fabricator-to-the-stars Justin Kell started transforming it.

Kell, whose Glory Motor Works has built or restored bikes for “The Master,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “G.I. Joe 2,” among many others, said his company built three futuristic motorcycles for Cruise and Kosinski’s stunt crews to ride in “Oblivion.”

To do that, Kell removed and replaced the Honda’s exhaust system, cooling system, fuel tanks and body work, added all-new lighting and electrics -- all in his Glendale facility, where he also does classic motorcycle restoration work -- and slapped on custom carbon fiber wheels.

PHOTO GALLERY: Ten very fuel-efficient motorcycles

That made the bike so much lighter and faster -- “a wheelie machine,” Kell says -- that he had to rework the gearing to keep the front end on the ground.

Kell says he was serving two masters: director and star.

The look of the machines, he says, “was all Joe Kosinski. He knew how everything had to work.”

But the functionality, he says, was all Tom Cruise. “Everything had to be set up a very certain way. The bikes were built exactly to the specs he likes.”

That’s because Cruise apparently is a real motorcycle rider.

“In every film I’ve ever done, they tell me the actors all know how to ride,” Kell says. “But when we start, nobody knows how to ride. So when they told me, ‘Tom can ride,’ I thought, ‘Well, no, he can’t.’ But I was shocked. He’s one of the best riding actors I’ve ever worked with. We didn’t have to worry about rider error.”

One of the three Hondas didn’t survive the shoot -- the victim of stunt work. Another of them was presented to Cruise as a birthday present, on the set, from his director.

The third? It’s in cold storage -- in part, Kell says, because it might be needed for an “Oblivion” sequel.

For now, the motorcycle man is working on a top-secret cycle for an upcoming Marvel movie. And, “Oblivion” sequel or not, he says he’d be happy to work with Cruise again.

“He could have a very good career as a stuntman,” Kell says. “In case the acting thing doesn’t work out for him.”

And as for the scenes in which the motorcycle is unfolded and removed from a spacecraft? Movie magic. Kell and company built seven different sections of motorcycle to create the transformation from baggage to blast-off, including a scale miniature.

You can still buy a CRF450X, though, and try folding that.

The Impressive Motorcycle Collection of Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise needs no introduction. Credited as one of the greatest actors of all time, his films have grossed over $10.1 billion worldwide and earned him numerous accolades, including three Golden Globe Awards and three nominations for Academy Awards. As one of the highest-paid actors in the world, he's now sat on a net worth of around $600 million - a fortune he's known to draw on to feed his love of adrenaline. The actor might be known for his action films, but his love for all things fast and furious also extends into his private life. His collection of motorcycles and cars is the stuff of legend, and even includes the most expensive motorcycle in the world. If you've ever wondered what type of ride the Mission Impossible star prefers, find out now as we take a deep delve into the very impressive motorcycle collection of Tom Cruise.

Vyrus 987 C3 4V

Vyrus 987 C3 4V

If we're looking into Tom Cruise's motorcycle collection, there's only one place to start - the Vyrus 987 C3 4V. Boasting a 1.2-liter engine and top speeds of 209 miles per hour, there's no question this is a beast of a bike. But despite its power, it still manages to be incredibly lightweight and easy to ride, weighing in at just 154 kgs. Cruise debuted the bike at his 51st birthday celebration at the Hotel Chateau Marmont, where his speedy exit made headlines. But it wasn't just how fast he was going at the time that impressed us. It was the astronomical price he was revealed to have paid for the motorcycle. According to hotcars.com, the Vyrus 987 C3 4V (which, by the way, holds the title of the most powerful production bike in the world) is worth the astronomical sum of $103,769, making it the most expensive motorcycle in the world.

Kawasaki GPZ900R

Kawasaki GPZ900R

If you've ever watched "Top Gun," you'll already know what the Kawasaki GPZ900R looks like. This was the bike that Cruise used to show off his impressive riding stunts in the classic 1986 movie. In the sequel, it was replaced by the Kawasaki Ninja H2R, but apparently, Cruise was impressed enough by the original to snap up a model for his own private collection. With a 998cc engine and a maximum speed of 248 miles per hour, the middleweight motorcycle is a fast, furious machine whose revolutionary design directly inspired the modern-day sportbike.

Ducati 999R

Ducati 999R

Ducati is an Italian brand that's been in the motorcycle game since the 50s. Known for its stylish, high-performance machines, it's a popular brand with an enviable reputation. The Ducati 999R was released in 2003 as a limited edition model. Only 200 exist in the entire world. One of them has made its way into Tom Cruise's collection, and by all accounts, it's a beauty. Powered by the super-advanced Testastretta engine and boasting a 6-speed gearbox, the bike (which was released specifically for racing purposes) is credited as one of the most powerful motorcycles ever produced. Tops speeds are an impressive 179 miles per hour. Cruise treated himself to a gray version of the machine for his 46th birthday.

BMW S1000 RR

BMW S1000 RR

If you've ever wondered what motorcycle Tom Cruise rode around on in "Mision Impossible - Rogue Nation," wonder no more. The bike was the BMW S1000 RR, a machine previously made famous when Michael Dunlop rode it to victory at a score of races and championships. The motorcycle was originally intended to be limited to a production run of 1000 (hence the name) but when more and more customers started demanding it, BMW duly obliged and increased the numbers. With its reputation as one of BMW's most powerful, reliable, and stable bikes, it's little wonder Cruise fell so much in love with the machine on "Mission Impossible," he decided to take it home with him.

Confederate Hellcat

Confederate Hellcat

Although Confederate Motors might be a tiny little operation with a relatively small range, it clearly knows how to attract headlines, not to mention celebs - as well as Cruise, Brad Pitt is also rumored to be a big fan. When Cruise made his dramatic entry to the premiere of "Mission Impossible 3" on the back of a motorcycle, it was his Confederate Hellcat that set all the tongues wagging. With its unique, revolutionary design, the motorcycle is nothing if not a treat for the eyes. Described by silodrome.com as a 'thoroughly American motorcycle,' the machine is packed with more technology and engineering than you'd believe possible. With its 2.2 liter engine and its top speeds of 121 mph, this is a vehicle that was designed to impress. It's also credited as one of the most reliable motorcycles ever made, which may just explain its $65,000 price tag.

Honda CRF450C

Honda CRF450C

The Honda CRF450C is yet another motorcycle that starred alongside Cruise in a movie (this time, "Oblivion") before making its way home with him. It features a 5-speed transmission, a single-cylinder, 449cc engine, maximum speeds of 105 miles per hour, and an eye-grabbing, futuristic design.

BMW R9 T Scrambler

The BMW R9 T Scrambler is the motorcycle Cruise crashed on "Mission Impossible: Fallout." Fortunately, it managed to survive the collision and make its way into his permanent collection. The motorcycle boasts a comfortable riding experience, a 1170cc engine, and top speeds of 124 miles per hour.

Ducati Desmosedici RR

Ducati Desmosedici RR

Only 1500 Ducati Desmosedici RR exists. While we've got no idea where 1499 of them are, we can guarantee that one of them has found a permanent home with Cruise. With a powerful 800cc V4 engine that can hit top speeds of 200mph, the Ducati Desmosedici RR is a powerful beast that comes with an eye-watering price tag of $72,500.

Triumph Speed Triple

Triumph Bonneville Scrambler

According to clementcycling.com, the Triumph Bonneville Scrambler was built specifically for "Mission Impossible III." Once filming was done, it made its way to auction, where the eventual buyer was none other than Cruise himself. By all accounts, Cruise splashed out $29,250 for his new ride.
