What to know
Critics Consensus
It's pure formula, but thanks to its breezy pace and a pair of charming performances from Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, Knight and Day offers some agreeably middle-of-the-road summer action. Read critic reviews

Critic Reviews for Knight and Day
Audience reviews for knight and day.
The over-the-top-ness manages to work well with the story's comedy. The Cruz-Diaz connection works well too.
Just Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz pretending to be younger than what they really are showing off their own 180° car stunts in a PG-13 fashioned "comedy" copying the formula of Charade (1963) with him pulling off his Ethan Hunt twists until she finally turns into a Mrs. Smith. 49/100
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz star in the action comedy Knight and Day. On her way to her sister's wedding, June Havens has her world turned upside down when she crosses paths with a secret agent. The action's pretty good and gives the film a lot of energy. The comedy however, is overdone. What starts out as clever satire starts to become a farce after a while. The score is also a problem, and undercut some of the energy of the action scenes. Still, Knight and Day is fun and entertaining, and the performances have a certain charm.
When the movie started, I thought it might have been unjustly panned - there were some flashes that suggested it was a spoof - but as it went on, it closed in on and eventually captured boring, Romantic Spy Comedy territory, retaining the cartoony bits but expecting us to take them at face value. I got the sense that somewhere along the way, the vision was compromised, and that maybe it was during test screenings, once the movie was already shot, meaning that the more marketable plot had to be pieced together from footage that didn't necessarily belong in that order, or in the film at all. It's wild speculation on my part, but I'm not sure how else to explain the way this one went off the rails - it was entertaining for a short while, maybe a half an hour, but then it suddenly seemed to not know what kind of film it wanted to be, and the result was something to which I was indifferent, in the end.

"Knight and Day" aspires to the light charm of a romantic action comedy like “Charade” or “ Romancing the Stone ,” but would come closer if it dialed down the relentless action. The romance part goes without saying after a Meet Cute contrived in an airport, and the comedy seems to generate naturally between Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz . But why do so many summer movies find it obligatory to inflict us with CGI overkill? I'd sorta rather see Diaz and Cruise in action scenes on a human scale, rather than have it rubbed in that for long stretches, they're essentially replaced by animation.
Have summer audiences been so hammered down by special effects that they require noise and fragmented visuals to hold their interest? Is it still possible to delight in a story unfolding with charm and wit? How many machine guns do you need in a romantic comedy? If you have charismatic stars like Cruise and Diaz and an A-List director, do you have to hedge your bets?
The movie is entertaining, but could have been better. The director is James Mangold , whose previous two films were " Walk the Line " and " 3:10 to Yuma ." I have a hunch there was an early draft of Patrick O'Neill's script that was more in the Cary Grant rom-com tradition and then somebody decided the effects had to be jacked up. From the ads, you could get the notion this is a Michael Bay film.
The wonder is that Cruise and Diaz are effective enough in their roles that they're not overwhelmed by all the commotion surrounding them. They make the movie work because they cheerfully project that they know it's utter nonsense and pitch in to enjoy the fun. I've been reading that movie stars can no longer “sell” a blockbuster movie. Audiences buy the concept, brand name, packaging, whatever. If that's true, which I doubt, it would mean a victory of technology over humans. If it comes true, it will be because movies have lost interest in creating and shaping characters we care about — because they're using actors as insert shots in special effects.
The plot makes splendid use of a MacGuffin, the device which explains everything by explaining nothing. Roy Miller, the Cruise character, has something, and there are bad guys who want it. I could tell you what it is, but what difference does it make? That's the whole point of a MacGuffin. Anyway, Roy “happens” to run into June Havens, the Diaz character, at an airport, for reasons you will discover. That's the manipulated Meet Cute. Now this next part you will want to follow closely.
They both end up on the same airplane, which has no other passengers, except some men scattered here and there. She goes to the restroom. He kills all the men and both pilots, then sits the dead passengers upright in “Weekend At Bernie's” style. She comes out of the restroom, not having heard the gunshots. He crash-lands the plane in a field and urges her to follow him in escaping FBI agents who are after them.
But ... but ... was there no other way for the bad guys to get the MacGuffin than by taking over a scheduled flight? Maybe, I dunno, snatch him on the ground? How did the FBI know the plane would crash — and where? Also, if you track who has possession of the MacGuffin during various times at the airport, you'll go crazy. Mind you, I'm not complaining. The movie knows this sequence is monumentally silly, and so do Cruise and Diaz, and Cruise keeps up a reassuring line of patter all during it, even while trying to crash-land safely.
That stuff is entertaining. There's also a running joke about how much ground they cover in an international chase. The movie was shot on location in Massachusetts, Spain (where they are chased by bulls), California, Jamaica, Austria and Kankakee, Ill., which has an excellent Steak 'n Shake off Interstate 57. Whether the actors were actually there on all those locations is a good question. Maybe only the green screen stuff was shot on location.
Such matters are irrelevant in a movie that makes not the slightest pretense of realism. Cruise and Diaz are fully scripted throughout with nonstop bantering and one-liners. They never seriously discuss their situation. They spend half the movie in dire danger. Thousands of bullets miss them. By motorcycle, car, train, airplane and parachute, they survive anything.
That girl June, she's a trouper. She follows Roy everywhere and believes everything he says. But ... but ... why does she need to come along? Roy has the MacGuffin. She was a witness, you say? To what? I'll tell you why she has to be along. It's because this is a romantic action comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, that's why.
So all of that I accept, and even applaud, and I observe that Diaz has one of the most winning grins in the movies. Basically, what I wanted was more of it. Some of that Cary Grant dialogue. More flirtation. More of a feeling the characters, not the production, were in the foreground. More of the stars. Because movie stars really do make a difference. I insist on it.

25 Questions You May Have About Knight and Day
By Mike Ryan
Knight and Day is Tom Cruise’s first film in two years. We know it's been a while, so you may have forgotten what it's like to watch Cruise on screen as an action star (and not a hirsute vulgarian film producer or a self-hating Nazi). As a service, we answer every possible question you could have about Knight and Day.
Q: Knight and Day was originally titled Wichita. Is the film set in Wichita? Is Emma Stone's character from Zombieland in the film?
A: A brief opening scene takes place at the Wichita airport. In retrospect, this would be like titling Toy Story 3 "Andy's Bedroom." Emma Stone is nowhere to be found.
Q: Why is it called Knight and Day?
A: Cruise goes by the name of Roy Miller during the film. His parents, who we meet briefly, have the last name Knight.
Q: Roy Miller? Is this a biopic of Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Roy Miller? Does Sandra Bullock make a cameo?
A: There is absolutely zero correlation between Knight and Day and The Blind Side.
Q: What about the "Day" part of the title?
A: Well ... Cameron Diaz's name in the film is June. The month of June contains days? Honestly, I have no idea.
Q: So what is the relationship between Cruise and Diaz in the film?
A: Cruise is a federal agent who has gone rogue. At the Wichita airport he meets Diaz, who's in town buying used auto parts and unwittingly gets caught up in Cruise's plan.
Q: So Cruise is basically playing Ethan Hunt?
A: I would say Ethan Hunt mixed with a smidgen of MacGruber. There are a lot of, "O.K., just follow my plan and we'll get out of this alive, I promise," type conversations right before something goes haywire.
Q: Like MacGruber, does Cruise resort to sticking a piece of celery up his rectum in an effort to distract the enemy?
A: That seems less preposterous than some of his actual plans.
Q: It's hard to tell from the trailers, is Cruise a good guy or a bad guy?
A: Oh, come on. Have you never seen a Tom Cruise film before? Other than Collateral, I mean? To be fair, it is complicated. And that's what makes the first half of the movie fun. Once it's not complicated, it stops being fun.
Q: Well, that sounds vague. Considering all other Tom Cruise films, in terms of quality, what does Knight and Day most compare with?
A: I'd put it somewhere in-between Legend and Taps.
Q: Does Cruise wear sunglasses and sprint at some point in the film?
A: Again, have you never seen a Tom Cruise film before? Other than Lions for Lambs, I mean?
Q: So what is all the fuss about in the film?
A: Everyone wants the Zephyr. A young prodigy, Simon Feck (Paul Dano)—who REALLY loves the song "Private Eyes" by Hall & Oates—created a battery-sized power source powerful enough to supply energy to an entire city.
Q: Wow, that sounds like a dangerous item. I would bet that if it became unstable and exploded, it could probably wipe out the Eastern Seaboard.
A: Or blow up a small helicopter.
Q: What do you have against Hall & Oates?
A: A lot, actually. I don't like how they're listed in all the record books as "The Most Successful Duo of All Time." How are they a duo? In every video, including for “Private Eyes,” they have a whole backing band. How is this fair to compare to legitimate duos? Also, how is this a duo when Oates only sang lead on one of their 29 Top-40 hits? Admittedly, Big Bam Boom is a great album.
Q: What's the best part about Knight and Day?
A: The first hour of the film is actually pretty fun. One of the opening scenes takes place on an flight from Wichita to Boston which turns out to be quite thrilling, if you're someone who finds the rapid decent of a commercial airliner thrilling and not nauseating because you have a flight scheduled anytime in the next month.
By Hadley Hall Meares
By Eve Batey
By Savannah Walsh
Q: What's the worst part of Knight and Day?
A: There are two. June (Diaz) is safely at home after a whirlwind tour of the world and she makes a phone call declaring that she has the Zephyr. In fact, she doesn't. She only says this because getting captured is the only way she can find Roy, whom she misses, and will almost certainly rescue her. Also, Roy has a habit of drugging June when she can't handle a situation. When he runs out of drugs, he uses a Vulcan nerve pinch to knock her out for a few hours. When did Star Trek fiction seep so deeply into the fabric of our lives that it's accepted as reality?
Q: Whirlwind tour of the world? Do they visit Germany in Knight and Day?
Q: Wasn't Tom Cruise's last film set in Germany?
A: Yes. I believe you're thinking of Valkyrie.
Q: Is there a scene in Knight and Day that rivals the one where Cruise dances around in his underwear? What movie was that?
A: I believe the dancing-in-his-underwear scene was also in Valkyrie. There is a scene of a shirtless Cruise on a small tropical island that causes painful involuntary flashbacks of Cocktail.
Q: In Knight and Day, how many crows fly out of Tom Cruise's mouth?
Q: In Jonah Hex, how many crows fly out of Josh Brolin's mouth?
Q: Is Knight and Day better than the Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston film, Bounty Hunter?
Q: Is Knight and Day better than the Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl film, Killers?
A: I've never seen Killers because it wasn't screened in advance. But, yes. Also, I look forward to the day when these films are packaged together as a "Three Pack!" for sale at Best Buy.
Q: Is Knight and Day better than Toy Story 3?
A: Is your name Armond White?
A: Then, no, it's not.
Q: If you wanted to be blurbed during the television commercials for Knight and Day, what would be your quote?
A: "If you could only see one movie the rest of your life—and your only choices are Bounty Hunter, Killers, and Knight and Day—go see Knight and Day!" —Mike Ryan, Vanity Fair.

Why is everyone giving Tom Cruise such a hard time? Can't we just forget about what happened on Oprah's couch? Is that asking too much? Is the movie business so flush with charismatic stars -- above-the-title names who can make carrying a picture look easy -- that it can afford to eat its young? I don't think so.
If you doubt Cruise's skills in the star department, Knight and Day will make you a believer. This is by no means a perfect film, but it is the most entertaining made-for-adults studio movie of the summer. And the reason it works is the great skill and commitment Cruise brings to secret agent Roy Miller, someone who's cool under pressure -- and who does everything just that little bit better when he's wearing sunglasses.
Knight and Day is a genial romantic thriller that very much wants to duplicate the success of Cary Grant/Alfred Hitchcock entertainments like North By Northwest and To Catch A Thief. It co-stars Cameron Diaz, who supplies her own kind of charisma as an innocent bystander who gets in way over her head in a series of spy-vs.-spy shenanigans.
Knight and Day is also fortunate to have James Mangold in charge. The director of Walk The Line and 3:10 To Yuma is one of the few filmmakers who have an instinct for intelligent popular entertainment. His films don't end up on 10-best lists, but you walk out of them feeling you've gotten what you paid for, and that is an increasingly rare commodity.
Knight and Day also features a ton of action, including a wild car-and-motorcycle chase through the winding streets of Seville. It can seem at times like the film is throwing too much at the audience, it's true -- but inevitably it's Cruise who comes riding to the rescue.
For Roy Miller is not only a peerless action machine; he's also an unflappable and unfailingly polite gentleman, always ready with a compliment or a comforting remark for Diaz's June Havens, no matter how chaotic the situation. Cruise's charming facility with Miller's deadpan spyside manner is this film's secret weapon -- and yet another reason why we should put Oprah's couch in storage once and for all.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score
It's the Hitchcockian "wrong man" theme played as a Hollywood action lark, all momentum and spectacle and no mortal risk or moral confusion...
Though it won’t hold up under a closer inspection of the plot, its fast-paced nature supplies an almost perfect blend of laughs and action to the summer moviegoer.
Knight and Day moves so fast it's not convenient to mull over where reality ends and the special effects begin. [Full review in Spanish]
An unimaginative recital of car-fueled multiplex cinema... [Full review in Spanish]
With all of these twists, turns, and frequent mood and setting changes, "Knight and Day" comes across as confused to what kind of movie it wants to be.
Bland, forgettable, expensive action...
Having seen the film, I can only shake my head at the studio's optimism.
Cruise and Diaz have a marvelous chemistry.
As a time-waster, Knight and Day is entertaining enough. It sets the bar low then clears it effortlessly. But as I creep into the damning- with-faint-praise department, reviewing this film feels as pointless as watching it.
It's a cute romantic comedy mixed with thrilling action that succeeds in being both fun and entertaining.

How Much Tom Cruise Made For The Original 'Top Gun' Versus How Much He Made For 'Top Gun: Maverick'
Posted: April 7, 2024 | Last updated: April 7, 2024
The legacy of "Top Gun" is one of action, adventure, and dedication to pushing the limits. Those are all things that Tom Cruise has taken to heart in developing his own career as well, as anyone can see by tracking the path he’s taken over his decades of experience. One could even say the same about the salaries he’s been able to command, as comparing how much he made between the original outing and its legacy-quel "Top Gun: Maverick" is the difference between night and day. (But that has nothing to do with the Tom Cruise film Knight and Day.)

Nicholas Galitzine on ‘Mary & George’ Sex Scenes, Tom Cruise’s Influence on ‘The Idea of You’ and His Disastrous ‘Dunkirk’ Audition

Nicholas Galitzine may have told his parents that he has a lot of sex scenes in “Mary & George” with both women and men, but that didn’t keep things from getting awkward when his mom and dad were by his side at the series’ London premiere.
“I was kind of in hysterics because there is nothing more uncomfortable than watching your son bed a number of characters even within the first few episodes,” the British actor, 29, tells me during a wide-ranging conversation on this week’s “ Just for Variety ” podcast.
“Mary & George” chronicles the real-life story of Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), a woman in 17th century England who was so hungry for power that she successfully pushed her son George (Galitzine) into becoming lovers with King James (Tony Curran). Created by D.C. Moore, the seven-episode series is based on the non-fiction book “The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James” and premieres on Starz on April 5.
Galitzine believes the sex on the show is “really integral to the plot and not just salacious.” While he also feels a genuine love developed between George and the king, “George’s appetite couldn’t be satiated.”
For the record, Galitzine says he doesn’t follow the news and gossip about today’s royal family. “I think that’s kind of symptomatic of my generation growing up in the U.K.,” he says. Although he does concede, “They’re certainly entertaining.”
Next month, Galitzine headlines Michael Showalter’s “ The Idea of You ” with Anne Hathaway. Galitzine plays Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of a boy band who falls in love with an older woman named Solène (Hathaway) after she brings her daughter to the group’s meet-and-greet at Coachella. The rom-com premiered at South by Southwest in March.
“That was one of the references in my head,” Galitzine says. “I think that’s my favorite scene actually in [‘The Idea of You’] because I think so much about what is talked about with this movie is obviously the more intimate scenes, but really I think the most powerful expression of love is the aftercare in a way and the connection after.”
As for his boy band performances, Galitzine looked to BTS and Backstreet Boys for inspiration. “I always reiterate: I am not a dancer,” he says. “I tried my best over having a few weeks of rehearsal, but these are skills that are honed for the majority of people’s lives. And my boy band members are all professional dancers. So I said, ‘Listen, you old shits, you better not make me look bad, OK?’”
Galitzine’s acting career began when he got a role in a play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. An indie with the late Luke Perry followed. His spotlight grew brighter when he played Prince Charming opposite Camila Cabello in the 2021 movie musical remake of “Cinderella” and as a prince of modern-day England in the queer rom-com “Red, White and Royal Blue,” co-starring Taylor Zakhar Perez .
But then there was his audition for “Dunkirk.” He says he “got very far” in the process. So much so that he was called in to read with director Christopher Nolan. “He starts reading the scene, [but] it’s not the scene that I prepared,” Galitzine recalls. He tried to improvise thinking Nolan may have been testing him, but then he froze. “I’m just staring at him for what feels like an eternity,” Galitzine remembers. “And I finally plucked up the courage to say, ‘I’m sorry, Christopher Nolan, you have the wrong scene or I’d just been royally screwed up by my team.’”
Most recently, there were rumors that Galitzine signed on to play Johnny Storm in “The Fantasic Four” reboot . While Galitzine confirms he had “conversations” about the superhero project, the part eventually went to Joseph Quinn (“Stranger Things”), something Galitzine knew before it was announced because the two are friends. However, Galitzine called his team when the internet speculation got too loud: “I was like, ‘Guys, I’m sure it’s not true, but I have to make certain it’s not true. And they go, ‘Yeah, it’s not true.’”
Perhaps Galitzine will pop up as a guest judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” He was turned on to the show –Crystal Methyd is among his favorite contestants — by his sister. He was once given a drag name — Anita Greencard — by a makeup artist on “Purple Hearts,” his hit Netflix romantic drama with Sofia Carson . A full drag transformation would happen on “Mary & George” when filming was delayed one day due to snowstorm. “My costumer became a drag king and I became a drag queen,” Galitzine says. “We sort of did the makeup for a few hours, and I kind of went around tormenting people…It’s so much joy. And I have to say the talent and the time that goes into doing this, I have so much respect for them.”
You can listen to the full interview with Galitzine above or you can download “Just for Variety” wherever you find your favorite podcasts.

"Knight and Day" aspires to the light charm of a romantic action comedy like "Charade" or "Romancing the Stone," but would come closer if it dialed down the relentless action. The romance part goes without saying after a Meet Cute contrived in an airport, and the comedy seems to generate naturally between Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.
