Travel vs. Trip vs. Journey Espresso English

  • We took a five-day trip to the Amazon.
  • You’re back from vacation! How was your trip ?
  • I went on business trips to Switzerland and Germany last month.

Use the verbs “take” and “go on” with trip .

  • A round-trip ticket is a ticket for going and coming back.
  • A one-way ticket is only for going.

Travel (v.)

Going to another place (in general).

  • I really like to travel.
  • He travels frequently for work.
  • My sister is currently  traveling through South America.

Travel (n.) can be used to describe the act of traveling in general:

  • Travel in that region of the country is dangerous.
  • World travel gives you a new perspective.

Incorrect uses of travel :

  • I bought this shirt on my  travel  to Thailand. I bought this shirt on my  trip  to Thailand.
  • I’m planning a travel to the U.S. next year. I’m planning to travel to the U.S. next year. I’m planning a trip to the U.S. next year.

Journey (n.)

One piece of travel (going from one place to another) – usually a long distance.

  • The journey takes 3 hours by plane or 28 hours by bus.
  • He made the 200-mile journey by bike.
  • “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step” – Lao-tze,  Tao Te Ching

We can also use journey in a more “metaphorical” way to talk about progress in life:

  • He has overcome a lot of problems on his spiritual journey.
  • My uncle is an alcoholic, but he’s beginning the journey of recovery.

From Copenhagen to Hurghada in Egypt

Just travelled to Hurghada in Egypt. No problems with cheking-in as long as you have your tickets printed. No problem with luggage or transfer. No complaints, we were never in contact with the company though since we didn't experience any problems with neither plane nor hotel. I will definetly be using TripX again next time I want to book a holiday.

Nice 4 days experience in Riga for 10 persons from DK

Easy booking of flights and hotel through the website (though only 8 people can be booked at the same time) Boardingpasses and other documentation came quickly by mail and it was easily added to Iphones Wallet. That means no flight/hotel paper documentation necessary at all during our trip. The 4* Hotel Monte Kristo was well situated at one end of the Old city and the premium rooms had a satisfactory standard. Everything worked smoothly for all of us and we had a very nice 4 days stay in Riga

The staff was lovely and wiling to help in Filerimos Village Hotel on Rhodes. Our apartment was gorgeous with beautiful balcony and view. We will definitely come back again.

Beware non existent refund policy

Booked a flight and hotel with this company not realising they operate through Expedia. Within 24hours I realised they did not apply the hotel's" stay 4 nights pay for 3 offer" I asked to cancel the hotel or for the offer to be applied but was only offered a refund that was derisory and would still leave me considerably out of pocket. I made a very costly mistake by using this company and I do not recommend it at all. I suggest reading the very small print so at least you do not end up being as ripped off as me.

Very good organiced and Info by Tripx

Very good organiced from you with flight, hotel and shuttelbus. Will defenetely use Tripx another time. BUT Paula at MTS was bad help when their shuttlebus broke down. She then ordered a small car, too little for 4 people whith suitcases. After three hours her collega fixed us a bigger car.

Was easy to book

Was easy to book and all information was received corretly yhrough emails. Will book from here again. Only thing is that the hotel which was supposed to be 4 stars was a 3-star standard so I think the site should be aware more of the hotels they use in their vacation packages so the traveller doesn't feel "cheated" when the hotel isn't up to the standars. But I guess it's also easy enough to go and read reviews on our own before booking.

Flying with a newborn baby

It’s our first time to fly with a newborn baby, and it was great experience with Norwegian air. When you’re flying from Oslo, you can check-in extra bagage for the baby at no extra cost. But going back from Praha, you are only allowed to check-in the bagage you paid for. We paid for 1 check-in and 2 hand carry luggages. So it was a little weird that they don’t have the same rules. Other than that all was great.

Easy overseas trip in Europe

We booked a trip to southern Europe and had no troubles at all. The booking experience was easy and we were sent the hotel and flight details immediately. Would have given 5 stars, but when booking the hotel it was a bit confusing in terms of what sort of room we were booking. Some information differed from what the hotel's website said.

Easy and safe :)

I’ve booked trips via TripX about three times now (to Gdańsk, Prague and Vilnius) and I’ve never been disappointed. The website is very easy to use and I always feel safe using TripX. I have however never experienced any delayed/cancelled flights or any other issues so I don’t honestly know how well the service is when a problems occur. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be using tripx for my next trip to northern/central/Eastern Europe whenever that time comes :) would love it if tripx offered more destinations in the future :)

Date of experience : July 16, 2022

Easy ordering, helpful information and excellent communication

Easy ordering, helpful information and excellent communication is TripX really strong side. The information can seem a little bit light, but just enough for a "non-globetrotter". The rest you´ll find at the air company or hotell site. Highly recommend!

A nice trip to Lloret de Mar

We decided only two days before departure to go to Spain, and the information was good by email for the trip. The shuttle transport was reliable both to and from the airport, the hotel was better than expected. Overall a nice holiday.

I like Tripx

I like Tripx, because you do most things yourself, and decide how you want it. How long do you want to stay, what flight, hotel, food, how many rooms you want. Transfer from and to the airport. then Tripx distributes the money to those who should have. All information is sent to you via the computer, so it is not SO difficult, if you can trust computers and printers. And this is actually getting cheaper than the chat companies.

  • Qual a diferença em inglês?

Qual é a diferença entre Travel, Trip, Journey e Voyage?

trip x travel

Travel, trip, journey, voyage.

Vejamos:

He detested air travel . Ele odiava viagens aéreas.

My interests are music and travel . Meus interesses são música e viagens .

Information on travel in New Zealand is available at the hotel.

He wrote a wonderful book about his travels in the Himalayas.

Have you read the book Gulliver’s Travels ? Você leu o livro As Viagens de Gulliver?

His travels abroad provided lots of background material for novels he wrote.

Você diz, the US president is going on a trip to North Korea , mas sim the US president is traveling to North Korea .

Note que você diz I’m going on a trip , e não I’m going to make a trip .

The round-trip ticket enabled me to visit all the major tourist destinations in India.

The trip went well. It was an old car, but it didn’t break down in four weeks of travelling. A viagem correu bem.

I went on a day trip to France. We left at 6.30 in the morning and returned before midnight the same day.

I’m going on a business trip next week . Estou indo viajar a negócios na próxima semana .

3 – Journey .

Did you have a good journey ? Você fez boa viagem ?

I met her on my last journey to England.

The journey from London to Newcastle by train can now be completed in under three hours.

The Cigüayos were the only natives who offered violent resistance during Columbus’ first voyage to the Americas.

This is the first space shuttle voyage to be devoted entirely to astronomy.

The ship sank on its maiden voyage .

I am planning a trip for two to three weeks to Southern Italy around X-mas time (two weeks prior and one week after X-mas). Even though I have been to Italy few times, never been to the South. I read about the region but seem to get conflicting information. Appreciate if you can answer the following:

 1) Are the shops, restaurants, and/or tourist attractions going to be closed?

2) Which region is recommended - Campania, Puglia , or Calabria? Does three week allow for all three regions? We want to enjoy the X-mas season with the locals, so do not want to rush from one place to another.

3) What is the weather going to be - I read conflicting reports that it would be raining.

4) Do I need to rent a car or is public transportation convenient enough?

Any thoughts and suggestions that you can provide will be very helpful for me to decide on my travel.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will travel to Nigeria for a short trip after the Duke of Sussex visits London

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have announced they will travel to Nigeria in May 2024 , days after the Duke is due to visit London to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

During the trip, the Sussexes will meet military personnel and participate in a number of activities associated with the Invictus Games. Nigeria’s defence ministry went public with its pleasure at the Sussexes ' announcement, declaring its ‘honour and delight’. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, on Sunday, released a statement confirming that the visit would strengthen Nigeria's connection to the games and potentially pave the way for hosting future editions.

Photographer and friend of the couple Misan Harriman greeted the news on X with an exuberant post including hearts and flag emojis. This prompted commentators to speculate as to whether Harriman might travel with the Sussexes.

While the dates for the trip are not yet known, it is understood that Harry will be in London to participate in a 10th anniversary service for the Games at St Paul’s Cathedral on 8 May. According to MailOnline , no senior members of the Royal Family are expected to join Prince Harry for the Invictus Games event in the UK.

The trip comes after the news emerged in 2022 that the Duchess was 43 per cent Nigerian, according to genealogy test she had taken. Meghan revealed this news in a discussion on . The visit therefore serves a double purpose: both helping to continue the couple’s work around the Invictus Games and offering Meghan an opportunity to explore her heritage.

Prince Harry has previously acknowledged Meghan’s Nigerian heritage in a speech during the opening ceremony of the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf . During his address, the Duke mentioned the connection as he praised Nigeria, Colombia and Israel for their inaugural participation in the games which are for injured and sick veterans.

During the speech he said, ‘Now, I’m not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered she is of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year’.

Since relocating to Montecito, the Sussexes have not been too busy with overseas trips. The couple visited Jamaica for the premiere of the film One Love , whilst Prince Harry made a whirlwind return to London upon the announcement of his father, the King’s cancer diagnosis. Meghan and Harry also appeared at a recent Invictus Games event in Canada. The Duchess has not returned to the UK since the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Second-year Malcolm X College student Lakeith Lewis said his trip to Kenya last month seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime.

“My mind was so blown away to travel and get a new perspective historically, culturally, environmentally,” the computer science student said. “It was a phenomenal experience.”

That’s the impact organizers of the trip to Kenya hoped for when they created the itinerary. From March 15 through 24, 13 African American male students from Malcolm X College traveled to Kenya for free to learn about culture, identity and heritage. For many of them, international travel was a first.

“It’s not the first time that Malcolm X has done study abroad programs, but it’s the first time that we’ve done a program of this size and magnitude with this focus,” said David Sanders, President of Malcolm X College.

When Malcolm X College received its retention data in 2021, though 72% of students came back to school semester after semester, only 57% of African American males returned to the college, Sanders said.

So, Sanders formed a mentoring program for African American men, partnering students with faculty members who look like them for a semester. He said that, at the end of the semester, the school’s retention rate for students in the program was 93%.

U.S. Rep. Danny Davis , of the 7th District, which encompasses the Austin and Garfield Park neighborhoods of Chicago, read about the program’s success and encouraged Malcom X College to apply for funding from Congress.

The college received $1 million, half of which is sponsoring five trips to African countries, including the recent one to Kenya.

“When we were talking to the students, they said they really didn’t know who they were, that society was trying to define who they were through their actions and behaviors, the way they were being treated, or the way that society was portraying them,” Sanders said, “We felt that this would be an opportunity for them to get back to the homeland, to see their roots, where they came from.”

Students from the mentoring program were invited to apply to travel to Africa for free and take a corresponding course for class credit, as long as they had at least a 2.0 grade point average and no active forms of discipline.

After four orientation sessions, the 13 students packed their bags, got on a plane and traveled to six heritage sites and several Kenyan communities, each coming back with their own perspective from the trip.

The students’ stories

Damian Wright — who’s focusing on financial business in his first year at Malcolm X College and grew up in East Garfield Park — said he went on the trip to Kenya to take advantage of the free opportunity to see a new country, and because his dad said it would be beneficial to experience environments outside of Chicago.

“He’s really pushed me to get out and try and see the world, and that’s something I’ve always wanted to do for myself,” Wright said.

King Navy is studying psychology, in his second year at Malcolm X College and also lives on Chicago’s West Side. He said he’s always wanted to go to Africa. The height of his trip was Kenya’s coast, where he said the students got the chance to interact with their tour guides more.

“I would have my little side conversations with them about culture, vision, all these other things” Navy said.

trip x travel

Another one of his favorite parts was toward the end of the trip, when the group visited “a poor part of Kenya,” said Navy, who wants to help at-risk youth in the future.

“The living conditions weren’t the best, but they also weren’t upset or crying,” Navy said. “They had a very uplifting, upbeat tempo.”

“The place where a lot of people thought I would be stressed out the most was actually the most peaceful to me,” Wright said of the same part of Kenya, “just because I grew up, I shouldn’t say ‘in that,’ but similar conditions.”

Wright said he also enjoyed interacting with his peers to understand their mindsets and how they experienced Kenya.

From Kenya to Chicago

When asked what lessons or values the students brought back with them from Kenya, Navy said his long-term goals included learning about how other people move through the world, their perceptions, and how they think about American culture.

“I’d like to keep exploring that, making sure that I learn as much about psychology outside of the states’ norms and learning how other people view it,” Navy said. He added that it was difficult to compare the two places because Kenya and Chicago are not alike.

“It’s a very difficult thing to try to bring back some of those cultural norms over there back to Chicago because we’re, for lack of better words, built different,” Navy said. “They have to lean on each other for things, for basic necessities,” he added, while Americans can often buy what they want when they want it. “A lot of times, it can seem or feel like crabs in a bucket. We’re so competitive that, a lot of times, we lose sight of that camaraderie.”

“Everybody out here is kind of doing things for themselves,” Wright agreed. “I don’t think enough people realize, especially in African American communities and Hispanic communities, how much we can build when we work together.”

Four men smiling

Wright added that he learned to be more open to moments that present themself to him.

“Moving forward, the one thing I can say is choosing to act on opportunity. I think there’s not enough of that done here in America,” Wright said. “I’ve been in situations where all you have to do is survive, and you couldn’t think about being sad. And I don’t think enough living is done in a lot of people’s lives, it’s kind of just surviving.”

“Just because you’re from somewhere doesn’t mean you have to stay somewhere,” Wright added — a sentiment that Lewis has already considered.

“Being an IT professional, I would love to expand my horizons into another career field, in another continent,” Lewis said. After returning from Kenya, he said he downloaded the Rosetta Stone app on his phone to start learning Spanish, and wants to learn Swahili.

Learning new languages works toward cultural competency, one of Malcom X College’s three goals when organizing these trips to Africa, Sanders said, along with student retainment and civic engagement.

“From my perspective, each one of these young men represents a power in and of themselves. But I don’t think that power has been revealed or that they’ve really reached their true destiny until you remove the barriers that stop them from getting there,” Sanders said. “Each person can make a difference, but it first starts with you seeing yourself as having the ability to make that difference.”
