Britney Spears' 15th Tour-Versary: A Look At Her Live Performances Then And Now!

Britney Spears Tours

- By Christopher Rosa

Prepare to feel ancient, ladies and gents: It has been 15 years since eternal queen of the universe  Britney Spears  embarked on her first solo concert tour.

That's correct. On June 28, 1999, 17-year-old Spears tied up her hair (with a *gulp*  scrunchie ), put on a pair of white leather pants, a hot pink crop-top and took the stage in Pompano Beach, Fla. for the start of her ...Baby One More Time Tour. This marks the beginning of a supernova's ascent to the holy throne of live entertainment. Who would we be without Lady Spears' outrageous stage shows that tour the globe every three to four years? Nothing, we tell you! NOTHING.

Spears has pretty much done it all on stage: bungee jump , frolic in the rain , simulate sex (wait, what ?) and gone to the  circus . As the mother of two adorable boys, she's had a number of ups and downs, but appears to be back on top once again. She recently set up shop in Las Vegas for a two-year residency aptly titled, Britney: Piece of Me . So if you want to see Spears  now , you better work —  b--ch  — to get a plane ticket.

We did some digging, and unearthed the most cheese-tastic photos from her first solo tour before comparing them to her current Vegas show. And you know what? Not much has changed. Brit Brit's still a goddess who blesses us with her extreme arm gestures, headset microphone and one-two step. She's still wearing wonderful costumes, using the word "y'all" and basically enchanting us in every way possible. Take a shot of nostalgia and browse through the gallery above, featuring her original show in 1999 as well as a few other vintage tour shots.

Happy tour-versary to the real Queen B!

Britney Spears Now: Singer’s Memoir Is Now Out

In addition to an previously released excerpt in which Spears wrote she became pregnant with Timberlake’s baby and had an abortion, the book also contains sections detailing their alleged infidelity and eventual breakup in 2002, which Spears says happened via text message. “For as much as Justin hurt me, there was a huge foundation of love, and when he left me, I was devastated ,” Spears writes. “When I say devastated, I mean I could barely speak for months. Whenever anyone asked me about him, all I could I do is cry.”

Britney Spears starred in The All-New Mickey Mouse Club at age 11 before beginning a highly successful career as a pop singer and performer with the release of the single “... Baby One More Time” in 1998. Spears achieved massive sales with albums like Oops!... I Did It Again and Britney , before experiencing a series of personal and professional setbacks. The Grammy winner rebounded with the chart-topping Femme Fatale —her sixth No. 1 album—in 2011 and later enjoyed an extended residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. In recent years, Spears has been in the spotlight because of her controversial conservatorship under her father Jamie Spears, which ended in November 2021.

FULL NAME: Britney Jean Spears BORN: December 2, 1981 BIRTHPLACE: McComb, Mississippi SPOUSES: Jason Alexander (2004), Kevin Federline (2004-2007), and Sam Asghari (2022-present; separated) CHILDREN: Sean and Jayden ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Sagittarius

Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981, in McComb, Mississippi, and raised nearby in Kentwood, Louisiana, by her parents James “Jamie” Spears and Lynne Spears. The middle of three children, Britney has an older brother, Bryan, and a younger sister, Jamie Lynn.

In childhood, Spears had a close relationship with her mother, who would take Britney to performances in Louisiana as well as out-of-state auditions. Meanwhile, her relationship with her father was strained from the outset.

Both Lynne and Jamie Lynn have documented Jamie’s struggles with alcoholism . In her 2008 book, Lynne described her ex-husband as “barely present, never mind supportive or loving” during the later years of their marriage, which began in 1975. The family also faced financial hardship, with Jamie struggling to keep a steady job. He and Lynne filed for bankruptcy in 1998—just months before the release of Britney’s debut single “… Baby One More Time.” Lynne and Jamie eventually divorced in 2002, which Britney has said is “the best thing that’s ever happened to my family.”

At a young age, Spears developed an interest in performing. “Ever since I was 7 or 8 years old, my mom would have company over, and I was always performing for everybody in front of the TV,” Spears told the Hollywood Reporter . “Even when I went to school, I was always the weird child; I would go outside and instead of playing, I wanted to have Star Search competitions.”

Her performance interested extended to athletics, too. Spears took up gymnastics at age 8 and even attended the training camp of Béla Károlyi, the former head coach of the United States national team.

The same year she started gymnastics, Spears auditioned for a spot on the Disney Channel’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club . Spears didn’t get the part, but she did eventually achieve one childhood dream: showcasing her vocal talents on the popular entertainment competition Star Search in 1992.

Spears tried again for The All-New Mickey Mouse Club when she was 11. This time, she was picked for the cast, which also featured other up-and-coming talents such as Justin Timberlake , Christina Aguilera , and actor Keri Russell. Spears appeared on the children’s variety show for two seasons. “We had an amazing, amazing time; we got to sing and dance and do everything,” she later explained to the Hollywood Reporter .

After the Mickey Mouse Club ’s cancellation in 1994, Spears returned home. She attended high school just across the Mississippi border at Parklane Academy in McComb. Spears played basketball as a student.

After her run on the Mickey Mouse Club , Spears focused on developing her musical career. She eventually landed a contract with Jive Records. In September 1998, Spears released her first single, “... Baby One More Time.” The catchy tune reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the end of January 1999, propelled in part by a music video in which the singer danced in a skimpy version of a Catholic schoolgirl uniform. Although the racy outfit drew sharp criticism from the parents of her young fans, 17-year-old Spears claimed to be a sweet, innocent Southern girl at heart.

Her .. . Baby One More Time album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts that same year and has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. At the 1999 Billboard Music Awards, Spears picked up four awards, including for Female Artist of the Year and Best New Artist. Her smashing success made her a headliner of the teen pop music wave that included fellow Mickey Mouse Club alumnae Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson.

Building upon her meteoric rise, Spears released Oops!... I Did It Again in 2000. The album was an instant No. 1 hit on the Billboard 200, selling more than 1 million copies in its first week. The singer’s personal life was also receiving more scrutiny, as rumors circulated that she was dating Timberlake, then part of the hit pop group *NSYNC .

With 2001’s Britney , Spears made the first move toward shedding her innocent image, while also taking her sound in a different direction. The single “I’m a Slave 4 U” sounded more like a Prince track than her bubblegum pop of the past. Performing the song at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, Spears made heads turn by dancing with a seven-foot albino python around her neck.

Around this time, Spears had a leading role in the 2002 movie Crossroads . The coming-of-age drama ended up grossing more than $60 million worldwide. That spring, Spears and Timberlake announced they had broken up.

The following year, Spears created again headlines for her performance at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Both she and Aguilera shared a kiss with pop superstar Madonna during their song. Some saw this dramatic stage moment as another way for Spears to present the latest version of her more sexualized public persona. Spears acknowledged around this time that Madonna was an important influence on her.

Spears’ next album, In the Zone , which included vocals from Madonna on the “Me Against the Music” track, hit stores that November. The album’s top single, “Toxic,” earned Spears her a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.

By January 2004, Spears appeared to be rebelling again—this time, against her intense work schedule. She married her childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas, but the union was annulled two days later. She then got involved with backup dancer Kevin Federline. At the time, Federline’s girlfriend was pregnant with their second child. Spears’ relationship with Federline only intensified with the media’s scrutiny of her private life.

Not deterred, Spears and Federline married on September 18, 2004, in Studio City, California.

Shortly after her wedding, she released Greatest Hits: My Prerogative . Spears covered the Bobby Brown hit “My Prerogative,” which seemed to be her way of talking back to her critics and lashing out about the media frenzy that continually surrounded her. The recording sold more than 5 million copies, though it wasn’t as successful as In the Zone .

Despite her declining sales, Spears seemed content. She and her husband announced that they were expecting their first child together in April 2005. “I find being pregnant empowering,” Spears told People magazine. “I think it brings out a pure side of you.”

Spears and Federline have two children, both sons, together: Sean Preston Federline, born in September 2005, and Jayden James Federline, born in September 2006.

The new mother found herself in hot water in February 2006, after she was caught driving her car with infant Sean Preston in her lap. Her parenting skills became a subject of national debate, and she was even rebuked by Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta for her actions. Spears apologized for the incident, claiming that she just wanted to get away from the paparazzi.

Spears made a surprising move two months after the birth of Jayden, filing for divorce on grounds of irreconcilable differences. After her separation, Spears frequented the club scene for a time, partying with socialite Paris Hilton , among others. She reportedly checked in and out of rehab, then shaved her head in a California beauty salon while the paparazzi took pictures in February 2007. She told the salon owner that “my mom is going to freak.” The following month, Spears spent time at a treatment center in California.

By summer 2007, Spears and Federline were in the midst of a difficult custody battle for their two sons, with Spears also estranged from her mother. In January 2008, a judge granted Federline sole custody of their children and suspend Britney’s visitation rights.

Despite her personal challenges, she moved forward musically with the album Blackout . However, Spears’ performance of “Gimme More” at that year’s MTV Video Music Awards was a disaster. She appeared nervous on stage, sluggishly dancing and poorly lip-syncing. A few days later, Spears was charged in connection to a hit-and-run incident in a parking lot.

Despite these setbacks, Blackout reached the second slot on the Billboard charts after its November release. This comeback of sorts seemed to be short lived, as Spears appeared to have another breakdown in January 2008. She was taken to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation when she refused to return her sons to their father after a court-appointed visit.

By month’s end, Spears returned to the hospital for another evaluation. Rumors circulated that she had bipolar disorder, but that diagnosis wasn’t confirmed. Her mother, Lynne, later wrote in her memoir Through the Storm that she believed her daughter experienced postpartum depression.

While in the hospital, Spears became the subject of a power struggle between her parents and her manager, Sam Lutfi. The couple believed that Lutfi was a bad influence on their daughter and was trying to control her life.

While Spears was receiving psychiatric care in 2008, her father, Jamie, filed for conservatorship , and a Los Angeles court granted him control of her home and liquid assets on February 1. After Spears was released from the hospital days later, her parents released a statement saying, “There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded. We ask only that the court’s orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted.”

The conservatorship was extended multiple times during the year, most notably on October 28. Then, a court officer gave Jamie indefinite control of her affairs. In 2012, Britney’s fiancé, Jason Trawick, was added as a co-conservator and granted control of her decisions regarding food, clothing, and medical care—but not her assets.

The arrangement continued for years and became a source of controversy, as many fans believed Jamie used the conservatorship to take financial advantage of Britney and maintain control over her. Those in favor of the singer regaining her autonomy began using the #FreeBritney hashtag on social media to show their support.

Circus , Femme Fatale , and More Albums

Only a few weeks after her personal crisis, Spears enjoyed a well-received guest appearance on the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother . That summer she made a triumphant return to the MTV Video Music Awards, bringing home three awards for the single “Piece of Me.”

In late 2008, Spears released her next album, Circus , which rose to the top of the charts thanks in large part to the success of her No. 1 single “Womanizer.” Rolling Stone critic Caryn Ganz heralded the album as “clubby, adventurous pop.” The singer’s fans agreed, sending the singles “Circus” and “If U Seek Amy” into the Billboard Top 10 and Top 20, respectively.

Spears proved she could still make powerful pop music in 2011 with Femme Fatale , which featured the hit songs “I Wanna Go” and “Till The World Ends.” The recording climbed to the top of the charts, becoming her sixth No. 1 album. In addition to all of this commercial success, Spears seemed happier in her personal life. She and then-boyfriend Trawick got engaged in December 2011, though they later split in early 2013.

In 2012, Spears took on a new challenge: She joined the judging panel of the popular singing-competition show The X Factor , embracing the role of the difficult-to-please critic. Spears left the show after one season.

The pop star made headlines in late 2013 with the release of her eighth studio album, Britney Jean , which Spears called her “most personal album ever” in a Tweet. The album’s lead single, “Work Bitch,” had been released ahead of the album; other tracks included “Alien,” “Perfume,” and “Passenger.” Britney Jean received mixed reviews. Three years later, she followed that up with Glory , which clinched the No. 3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release.

Also in 2013, Spears began her residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with the show Britney: Piece of Me . The residency was initially expected to last for two years, though the singer later signed an extension to stay through December 2017.

In 2015, Spears teamed up with female rap star Iggy Azalea for the single “Pretty Girls.” They performed it together at the Billboard Music Awards in May, but the song topped out at a relatively modest No. 29 in the United States.

In November 2017, the pop star oversaw the opening of the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation’s Britney Spears Campus, an effort made possible through the donation of $1 million from her ticket sales. Further demonstrating her attachment to the Las Vegas area, she donated a painting for an auction to support victims of the October 2017 shooting massacre, with famed TV personality Robin Leach splurging $10,000 for the piece.

Shortly after her Vegas residency concluded at the end of 2017, the pop star announced she would be embarking on a tour in a few months. “I’m so excited to announce that we’re bringing the #PieceOfMe tour to select cities in North America, Europe and the UK!” she tweeted in late January 2018. “See you guys this summer.”

In August 2018, it was reported that Spears was ordered to pay her ex-husband Kevin Federline $100,000 in child support dues. The singer had already been shelling out $20,000 per month, but Federline wanted more for their two boys as they approached their teenage years.

In January 2019, shortly before she was scheduled to begin another Las Vegas residency, Spears announced that she was taking an indefinite leave of work to support her ailing father, Jamie. In April, it was revealed that the singer had entered an “all-encompassing wellness treatment” facility amid the stress of dealing with her father’s health struggles.

Concerns over Spears’ condition remained even after she checked out of the facility that month. In May, it was reported that the singer’s mother, Lynne, was seeking to be involved in her daughter’s conservatorship. Around that time, Spears’ manager, Larry Rudolph, suggested that his client was in no condition to resume performing.

In 2019, Spears was granted 30 percent custody of her two children. However that August, Federline obtained a restraining order for the two boys after an incident at the home of Spears’ father. According to Federline’s attorney, a “disagreement” took place after the singer took the kids to visit their grandfather, leading to a “physical altercation.”

In May 2019, Spears attended a conservatorship hearing with her mother and reportedly asked for the arrangement to be dissolved. Just four months later, citing health reasons, her father gave temporary control of the conservatorship to Britney’s caretaker, Jodi Montgomery. Another extension of the conservatorship was granted in August 2020, and later that year, Spears—who preferred Montgomery manage her assets—announced she would no longer perform with her father serving as a conservator.

Public interest in the conservatorship exploded with the release of two documentaries in 2021. First came Framing Britney Spears , one of two episodes from FX’s The New York Times Presents series. The February 2021 episode featured interviews with people close to the singer providing analysis on the state of her career. The second episode, Controlling Britney Spears , released in September and focused on the mechanics of her conservatorship and allegations it was used as a tool of control against her.

Also in September, Netflix premiered Britney Vs Spears , an investigative documentary which focused specifically on her conservatorship and the controversy surrounding it. CNN even aired a special report, Toxic: Britney Spears’ Battle for Freedom , which included interviews with the singer’s friends and former employees. Fans clamored around the star, even staging rallies in support of the #FreeBritney movement.

In June 2021, Spears gave a 24-minute statement in court detailing her life during the 13-year conservatorship. “I just want my life back,” she said , also describing the arrangement as abusive. “I’m so angry, and I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

A month later, Spears and her lawyer filed to end the conservatorship. As public interest around the case grew, her father agreed to step down as conservator in August 2021 and soon filed a petition to end the arrangement. Finally, that November, a judge ruled to end the conservatorship. Spears took back control of her estate and was no longer required to pay anyone to oversee her affairs.

In May 2023, Fox aired TMZ Investigates: Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom , which provided a look into her life following the end of her conservatorship. Spears heavily criticized the program in an Instagram post , calling TMZ the “trashiest news channel” and saying it was another example of the media having “always been cruel to me.”

Spears met Sam Asghari, an Iranian-American trainer and model, while making the music video for her 2016 song “Slumber Party.” They began dating within months. The couple married in June 2022. Spears’ children notably didn’t attend the wedding and, according to a May 2023 documentary by TMZ, hadn’t seen their mother in over a year.

In April 2022, Spears announced she was pregnant following a vacation to Hawaii with Asghari. However, a month later the couple revealed they had lost the baby. “Our love for each other is our strength. We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family,” they said in a statement.

Ultimately, their days together were numbered. The couple separated in July 2023. Asghari filed for divorce in a Los Angeles County court weeks later on August 16, citing irreconcilable differences and seeking spousal support. Spears posted about the breakup soon after on Instagram, writing, “I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly... I’ve been playing it strong for way too long and my Instagram may seem perfect but it’s far from reality and I think we all know that.”

Spears published two books with her mother, Lynne: Brittney Spears’ Heart to Heart in 2000, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at Britney’s career, as well as a young adult novel called A Mother’s Gift in 2001.

After the two had a public falling out, Lynne published Through the Storm in 2008. The book detailed the family’s struggles following Britney’s fame.

The next year, journalist Steve Dennis wrote an unofficial biography titled Britney: Inside the Dream based on interviews with friends, performers, and other people in the singer’s circle.

Spears released her first solo memoir, The Woman in Me , in October 2023. Promotional materials for the book promised it would tell Britney’s “own story, on her own terms, at last.” Spears opened up about many different facets of her life and career, including her conservatorship, strained relationship with sister Jamie Lynn, and romance with Justin Timberlake .

A week before the book’s release, People published an excerpt in which Spears revealed she became pregnant with Timberlake’s baby while dating the former *NSYNC member, then had an abortion. “If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father,” she wrote, adding that she ultimately agreed to undergo the procedure. “To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.” Timberlake nor his representatives have publicly commented on Spears’ claim following the book’s release.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Spears’ net worth is around $70 million as of July 2023. However, her fortune has fluctuated wildly over the years.

In 2002, Forbes estimated she had a pre-tax income of $40 million dollars. By the start of her conservatorship in 2008, a lawyer for her father has claimed her assets were valued at only $2.8 million. As she released more albums and went on tour, she likely recouped some wealth. Per Caesars Entertainment, her Las Vegas Residency paid off handsomely, too, grossing $137.7 million over five years.

According to The New York Times , Spears was worth $60 million as of 2021. At the time, she said she was given a $2,000 weekly allowance under the terms of her conservatorship, even as her father drew $16,000 per month in salary as the conservator.

  • I don’t like going out... I love my home and staying in bed and watching Dancing with the Stars or reading a Danielle Steel novel. I’m kind of boring.
  • I’d get bored singing the same type of songs all the time. I still love my old stuff, but you have to extend yourself and grow.
  • I remember being in my living room and watching [Madonna] on TV. I’d dance around in my short tops and sing and dream about being her.

Britney Spears's '…Baby One More Time' music video debuted on MTV's 'TRL' on this day in 1998. The choreographer shares how he knew the pop star would become an overnight success.

"she really, really wanted it — and she worked for it," recalls randy connor, who choreographed the iconic music video..

On this day: Nov. 26, 1998

The happening.

As Thanksgiving Day approached in 1998, the world had no idea they were about to witness the metamorphosis of a former Mouseketeer into a global sensation.

Britney Spears ’s debut single “...Baby One More Time,” which was initially turned down by both TLC and the Backstreet Boys, had already dropped on Oct. 23 . The buzz was building across the music industry about the premiere of its accompanying music video set to drop on MTV’s TRL . Directed by Nigel Dick , the video featured a provocative Spears in a sexy Catholic school uniform bought at K-Mart with pink poms poms and pigtails.

This wasn’t just any video debut — it was a moment that would be etched into pop culture history.

Her journey started years earlier. After waving goodbye to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in 1994, Spears returned to Louisiana to resume a normal teenage life while trying to pursue a solo career. In a twist of fate, a demo tape caught the attention of Jive Records. Her voice, imbued with a unique mix of innocence and allure, seemed to come at the right place at the right time.

“...Baby One More Time,” written by legendary songwriter Max Martin , disrupted the dominant R&B and rock genres, allowing poppy bobs to enter the zeitgeist in a fresh way. It was the perfect vehicle for Spears to transition. Her public image, largely shaped by the video’s themes of youthful innocence and desire, would stay with the singer for the rest of her career.

Randy Connor , the video’s choreographer, remembers getting the call from Jive Records about a "fresh face" they were wanting to develop into a pop princess.

“It was an amazing time,” he tells Yahoo Entertainment. “Britney was 17, and a ball of energy. It was really a dynamic situation between me and her. Britney was a hard worker, she was very confident. She really, really wanted it — and she worked for it.”

Chris Sawyer, one of the principal dancers hired by Connor to be featured in the music video, says Spears's timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

“When she came out, we were just getting off the Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna stage,” Sawyer tells Yahoo Entertainment. “Her and Christina Aguilera, there was a new crop of ladies that were coming up as pop stars — a new crop of ‘Madonnas.’ I know Jive Records was patting themselves on the back because it was exactly the perfect time.”

The “soulful” choreography, mixed with jazz modern movement, was an intentional choice on Connor’s part. “The song was really poppy and mainstream, so I wanted to create something with soul, particularly in moments like [when she sings] ‘Hit me baby one more time…’, with the hand movements and gestures.”

“We didn't do any of our breakdance moves or any of our urban hip-hop moves,” Sawyer recalls. “We were doing all the things you saw in the '80s with Janet Jackson. We brought that back.” And despite the lack of experience, Spears was keeping up with the best of them.

“She was still a new artist and kind of feeling her way around professional dancers,” he continues. “She was like a freshman in college, learning and very observant, very quiet. She didn't talk too much. She was just listening to Randy and listening to us, and working so professionally with all of us.”

Connor recalls Spears being “nervous” before the video dropped.

“I think she was a little scared, but I think we all knew [it would be successful]. My dancers would say, ‘She’s gonna be this huge star,'” he remembers. “At the end of the day, it’s because she made it so beautiful and elegant. Everything I gave, she embraced and took hold of it. She felt the energy and vibe I was going for and was completely open to receiving it. And that's why it worked.”

Oddly enough, as Spears writes in her memoir The Woman in Me, the original setting of the video was going to be in space — until she canned it.

“The mock-up I saw had me looking like a Power Ranger,” she writes. “That image didn’t resonate with me, and I had a feeling my audience wouldn’t relate to it, either. I told the executives at the label that I thought people would want to see my friends and me sitting at school, bored, and then, as soon as the bell rang, boom — we’d start dancing.”

“I thought we should wear school uniforms to make it seem more exciting when we started dancing outside in our casual clothes,” she continued.

What Happened Next

“...Baby One More Time” became the fastest-selling album by a teenage solo artist , debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. It also earned Spears her first Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She'd later win Best Dance Recording for "Toxic," among eight career nominations. As a single, “...Baby One More Time” is still the fifth best-selling by a female artist in the U.S. , behind Cher's "Believe" and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You.”

Virtually overnight, Spears became the queen of teen pop and set the tone for what the early 2000s would look and sound like. Her charisma struck a chord with fans and catapulted her into a stratosphere of fame that few artists ever reach. The next two albums — Oops!… I Did It Again (2000) and Britney (2001) — also debuted at No. 1, making her the first female artist to have her first three albums achieve this feat .

“She hit so quickly and so substantially,” says Sawyer.

For better or worse, it also turned Spears into a sex symbol. And contrary to popular belief, much of the video's aesthetic was led by women. When addressing the provocative schoolgirl outfit worn by the singer in a 2018 Billboard interview, Dick stressed that the producer and executive producer, both of whom were women, praised the look as a “really good idea.”

"Music magazines said this artist was conceived by a bunch of dirty old men in a conference room wearing raincoats,” he said, “which, in my experience, was not how it occurred at all."

Where We Are Now

A quarter century later, it’s evident that Spears’s sound has influenced generations of young performers in her wake. Contemporaries like Christina Aguilera, as well as later superstars such as Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish have all pointed to Spears as influences.

Spears experienced an immense amount of unfair scrutiny in the following years, as she publicly wrestled with mental health issues and a conservatorship that she characterized as abusive in her memoir . Still, the singer always credits the music video as one of the best times of her life.

“Making that video was the most fun part of doing that first album,” she writes.

As for Connor, he’s now a successful music producer. He continued to work with Spears for the promotional tour of the album, before leaving to help Diddy choreograph dances for a Nelson Mandela tribute concert in Africa. By the time he came back to the U.S., he says Spears was already a “huge star” and went on to work with choreographers like Wade Robinson and Brian Friedman.

“I just continued on my busy path. I was touring all over the place, and was really happy for her,” he says now. “I ran into Britney a couple times here and there, but we never had the opportunity to celebrate the immense success of the video in real time. I still get calls from fans all over the world.”

Spears returns in first concert tour in 5 years

Britney Spears comes to the Seattle area on April 9, bringing to the Tacoma Dome her "Circus" concert tour that started in New Orleans, in Spears' home state of Louisiana, back in March.

Share story

NEW ORLEANS — Dressed as a sexy ringmaster and directing a colorful cast that included jugglers, acrobats and martial arts dancers, Britney Spears delivered a tightly choreographed, if perfunctory performance, as she kicked off her first concert tour in five years on March 3.

The 27-year-old pop superstar’s “Circus” tour started in her home state of Louisiana at the New Orleans Arena, before a nearly sold-out crowd that cheered on their idol as she gyrated and slithered across the stage while singing some of her biggest hits, from the recent “Womanizer” to her first and now classic song, “Baby One More Time.”

The wild applause has been largely absent from Spears’ life since the last time she went on tour in 2004, as the singer endured a devastating downward spiral: Due largely to personal troubles, she went from one of pop music’s most profitable, in-demand entertainers to an out-of-control tabloid persona who seemed to be on a path to destruction.

But over the last year, that path has been reversed, as she’s embarked on a successful comeback that has seen her image, as well as her career, rehabilitated.

The “Circus” tour was another strong step in the right direction. Spears didn’t interact much with the crowd — the only thing she uttered to the audience was “Thank you, New Orleans” at the end of the nearly two-hour show — and appeared at times to be lip-syncing. But fans didn’t seem to care, screaming wildly at the first sight of Spears, who descended from the ceiling on hoops suspended by wires, wearing a short red and black ringmaster ensemble.

Spears started the show with the title track to her new CD, “Circus,” then went right into “Piece of Me,” which she performed largely from a cage, part of the elaborate, grandiose stage backdrops.

Acrobats twirled from suspended fabric as Spears sang and danced, showing off her toned body with flirty, seductive moves. She got frisky with two male dancers as she performed “Touch of My Hand” while sporting a blindfold.

When Spears slowed down the show for “Everytime,” the audience could be heard singing the lyrics — “every time I try to fly I fall, without my wings I feel so small” — along with her.

“We’re so happy she’s back,” said 16-year-old Justin Scarbrough of New Orleans, wearing a T-shirt he designed himself that bears Spears’ image and the words “I Support Britney Spears.”

In the past five years, Spears has gone through more tumult than many endure in a lifetime: She’s been married and divorced, had two kids, gone to rehab, gone through a custody battle, found herself briefly committed, and been so out of control that her father, Jamie Spears, was appointed by a court to oversee his daughters’ personal and professional affairs indefinitely.

But over the past year, Spears’ life and career has rebounded. Her “Circus” CD, released in December, has already sold more than a million copies, and she’s had two hits off the CD, the No. 1 “Womanizer” and the top five “Circus.”

The “Circus” tour, which takes Spears to 27 cities in the United States before heading to Europe in June, is the pop star’s biggest opportunity to connect with her still formidable fan base.

“That was awesome,” said 21-year-old Lauren Baudoin of Lafayette, La., after the show. Baudoin’s sister, 18-year-old Lindsey Baudoin, said she liked that there were entertainers between the songs.

“It kept going,” Lindsey Baudoin said. “It was nonstop.”

Britney Jean Spears (born 2 December, 1981) - aka Britney Spears - is a recording artist and entertainer from Mississippi, US.

Britney Spears started performing at a very young age, by performing on stage productions and television shows. Then, in 1997, she was signed to Jive Records.

Spears was credited with leading the revival of teen pop in the late 1990s, she was said to be the most gifted teenage pop idol for many years. Her first album "Baby One More Time" became an international success, making her well known in the music industry. The album was released in 1999, followed by the album "Oops!... I Did It Again" in 2000. She had the best selling albums by a teenage solo artist at the time.

Britney did extremely well during her career and became a well known pop star, but in 2007 her personal life problems became public knowledge. During that year she released her fifth studio album called "Blackout", with such hits as "Gimme More" and "Piece of Me". Yet the same year Spears went into a drug rehabilitation facility for less than a day. The following night she shaved her head at a hair salon during her break down.

Spears admitted herself into other forms of treatment in the following weeks after her break down. The album "Blackout" went on to sell over three million copies.

In 2008, Britney went on her tour called "The Circus Starring Britney Spears", to promote her sixth album "Circus". The tour was one of the highest grossing global concert tours by 2009.

In March 2011, she released her seventh studio album called "Femme Fatale", which peaked at number one in the US, Canada and Australia. Its peak in the US tied Spears with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson for the third most number ones achieved amongst female artists.

In 2012 she began to work on her eighth album called "Britney Jean", with the like of Will.i.am. The following year she featured as a vocalist on Miley Cyrus's song "SMS (Bangerz)".

Spears also renewed her contract with RCA and continues to record new music.

Live reviews

Britney Spears is a true performer; every aspect of her show is designed to entertain and delight her audience. She always has a varied set list that includes old favorites like 'Baby One More Time' and 'Oops' as well as new classics like 'Womanizer' and 'Perfume'.

The set(s) at a Britney Spears show are always over the top, and you can expect a lot of surprises. A single performance may include: rain, fire, smoke, moving set pieces and confetti.

For her Circus Tour (circa 2007), the audience was transported to a three-ring circus in every way! I loved the stunts and trapeze tricks!

Her Dream Within a Dream Tour (circa 2002) had eleborate set pieces and props, including a car!

The short-lived Onyx Hotel Tour was raunchy and sassy, much like the 22-year-old Britney at the time. It was cut short due to knee surgery.

Britney's Femme Fatale Tour (circa 2011) was action-packed, and ended with her literally flying across a screen of sparks wearing giant wings!

Her Piece of Me Tour (Vegas, 2013- ) is absolutely spectacular, with incredible sets, video, audio and TONS of surprises. It goes through five DIFFERENT phases, and ends in an epic dance number!

Britney Spears loves to perform and entertain. Every show also includes incredible dancers and absolutely stunning costumes. She often changes five or more times over the course of two hours ... each costume getting more and more elaborate as the show goes on. She will sparkle, enchant, and seduce the audience, depending o the song. Imagining what the costumes will be like is one of the fun parts of seeing her live - she always delivers and delights.

Finally, the Britney Army is the BEST group of fans a super star could ask for, and being surrounded by them at a live performance is awesome. We are kind, enthusiastic, and will dance the night away while singing along to our favorite Britney tune. Don't be afraid to say hello - we love meeting fellow Britney fans!

Britney Spears was and continues to be one of the biggest names in music of all time. She is the original pop princess, and watching her live is a once on a lifetime experience that is certainly not to be missed. Britney has a whole array of classics, the best of which are always performed at her shows. There isn’t a single person today who hasn’t heard of ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’, surely? Although Britney is not exactly known for her vocal skills, this barely matters when going to see her live. Her shows are a spectacular performance, with bright flashing lights and backing dancers galore. The costume changes are intense, with some outrageous outfits. And the set is incredible. For her Circus Tour, the entire stage was decorated like a circus with Britney as the ringleader: it was visually spectacular to behold. Classic hits such as ‘Toxic’, ‘Oops I Did it Again’, ‘Everytime’, ‘Circus’, ‘Womanizer’, ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ and, of course ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’, were all performed and all received an incredible crowd reaction.

What can you really say about an icon like Britney Spears. The princess of pop has an imaginable amount of hits so her setlist could fill a show that lasted all night, yet she selects what she believes is her finest work and what will please her ever-loyal fan base the most. It is worth noting that Britney has not sung completely live in many years, this is just given fact so when you move past this and appreciate the experience that she gives to an audience, it becomes secondary.

The video interludes, the impressive dance routines, the light displays and the dazzling costumes all turn a Britney show from a simple gig into an experience. Then add into the equation mega-hits such as 'Gimme More', 'Piece of Me' and '...Baby One More Time' and you have a show that others will struggle to top.

Especially when it comes down the all out performance that is the finale of 'I Wanna Go' and 'Womanizer', the audience scream and sing in equal measure as this well trained pop star owns the stage in a way that only Britney can. A delight to watch and a master at work.

I love Britney Spears, so this may be a biased review, but I loved the show! From her first song, Work Bitch, to her last song, Till The World Ends, it was a great show. She changes outfits and scenes every couple songs, continuing to keep my attention for the whole show, even using a ring of fire for her performance of Circus. A couple of her most famous outfits we're on display in the entrance to the Axis theatre, which was fun.

I enjoyed hearing all of her songs and energy was great. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a great show in Las Vegas.

Goddess!!! What an incredible performer, she's still got it. I would forever see Britney live. I don't care if she has live vocals or not. She can dance her ass off and she looks amazing doing it! I am without words for the concert I went to last night.

I just went to go see Britney over the weekend. She was absolutely amazing! Definitely in my top 5 performers. She put on a very entertaining show and even performed with a surprise guest...Tinashe. Would totally recommend go seeing her!

Britney is lip-sync queen. This girl can´t sing and dance. I don´t know why she is famous.

But I am grateful, because I have seen it, and I think, who didn´t seen it, don´t believe it. It´s like watching DVD.

She didn’t really need to be there. Bad lip syncing. Awful dancing and generally pointless. I don’t understand how Britney is still relevant. She’s done well considering she has little talent

matt-buckeridge’s profile image

It was amazing. She keeps up with the dancers and looks great. The props on stage are so cool. I'm so glad I got to see her perform and can't wait to come back and watch the show again

For Nicki Minaj, a Britney Spears tour was a chance to prove 'I can be part of any world'

britney spears first solo tour

Nicki Minaj was conquering the mainstream with the “boom ba-doom boom, boom ba-doom boom bass” of “Super Bass,” the highest-charting entry on the Billboard Hot 100 by a solo female rapper since Missy Elliott taught us what it means to "Work It , " when she took the stage in Glendale, Arizona, as the main support act on Britney Spears' huge arena tour.

It was the rising rap sensation’s second swing through metro Phoenix as an opener that year, having shared a bill with Lil Wayne on April 19, 2011, when Weezy’s I Am Music II Tour rolled through Footprint Center, which was called US Airways Center at the time.

Nicki Minaj concert in Phoenix: What you need to know before you go to Footprint Center

Britney Spears on Nicki Minaj: 'A great artist in every way'

The Femme Fatale Tour launched on June 16, 2011, in Sacramento, California, hitting Glendale six days later for a concert at Desert Diamond Arena, which was Jobing.com Arena then.

In a midtour interview with MTV , Spears sang Minaj’s praises.

"I think she's great," Spears said.

"She's a great artist in every way and I'm really happy for her. I think she has a distinct sound when she raps. It really stands out and sets her apart from everyone else. I'm happy she's able to be on tour with me because that's just amazing."

Nicki Minaj was 'really excited to make history with Britney'

In an interview with MTV before the tour began , the Trinidadian rapper shared her feelings on touring with Spears.

“She's definitely iconic and I'm very excited," Minaj said. "It's weird. I just always remember her, since I was little, ruling the world, so I'm really excited to just expand my fanbase and show people that I can be a part of any world."

She also called into the Ryan Seacrest show to talk about how thrilled she was to have been asked to join the tour with a shout-out to her fans, the Barbs.

"I'm calling to let everyone know how thrilled I am, how honored I am to be going on the road with the iconic Miss Britney Spears this summer,” she said.

“I just know that when the Femme Fatales and the Barbs get together, we're going to kick major ass. And I am looking forward to creating a new, a bigger, a brighter, a more spectacular show. And I am just really, really excited to make history with Britney.”

In an interview with MTV before the tour launch, Minaj talked about “trying to put more theater on that stage,” adding, “So much to me is music, but it's also about putting on a show, so that's my goal: to truly put on a show and incorporate theater and dance.”

Critics praised Nicki Minaj's 'undeniably magnetic stage presence'

An Entertainment Weekly critic wrote that “Nicki herself brought as much fun and energy as she could to her budget-limited performance” in Los Angeles, the stop before the tour arrived in Glendale, “developing a Femme Fatale theme of her own as her alter-ego Roman battled a villainous dancer wearing the Saw clown mask.”

That writer also praised her “undeniably magnetic stage presence."

The Los Angeles Times responded to that same performance even more enthusiastically.

“Her music ranges from hardcore to pop friendly, so it’s not surprising that her second trek in a year shows her supporting pop royalty Britney Spears on her Femme Fatale tour,” Gerrick D. Kennedy wrote. After noting that Spears was the star of the show, he went on to write, “there was a moment at Staples when Minaj ruled the stage with razor-sharp bangs and body-hugging attire on full display.”

Kennedy went on to praise Minaj for having stepped it up a notch or two since coming through LA with LA Wayne a few months earlier.

“While she played the true team player role while on the road with Wayne (he likes to bring out his Young Money family  during  his set), with Spears, she proved to be a serious live player with elaborate staging, a theatrical story line, choreography and costume changes,” Kennedy wrote.

When Nicki Minaj came to Arizona on Britney Spear's Femme Fatale Tour

Two days later Minaj played Glendale, where my review in The Arizona Republic noted the “elaborate theatrical production” involved in her performance, which included “a talking computer, a parallel world and an epic battle being waged before our very eyes between good, as played by Nicki, and evil, which, of course, was out to ‘overshadow joy, peace and love.’”

“And if that sounds a little silly, well, it was, especially the final battle, where the rapper struck her favorite kung fu poses with a ray gun in each hand before vanquishing evil, naturally.”

For the most part, Minaj pulled it off, I wrote, “in part because she's one of rap's most charismatic entertainers, with a million dollar smile, a killer haircut and a level of enthusiasm that could not be more contagious while treating the fans to a hit-filled set that started with ‘Roman's Revenge’ and made its way through ‘Did It On'em,’ ‘Up All Night,’ ‘Bottoms Up’ and ‘BedRock.’”

Minaj joined Spears on stage at several stops on the Femme Fatale Tour to dust off her feature on “Till the World Ends,” but Glendale got Minaj on video, rapping her verse from the Femme Fatale Remix.

As The Republic noted, “‘Big Fat Bass’ began with giant speaker cabinets being wheeled out by her dancers, Britney crawling out of one to bump and grind in another skimpy outfit while will.i.am handled his part via video (the same trick used later for Nicki Minaj's rap on ‘Till the World Ends’ despite her being IN THE VENUE, having gone on just before the headliner).”

According to Pollstar, the Femme Fatale Tour was the 11th highest-grossing tour worldwide of 2011, earning $68.7 million.

Nicki Minaj brings her Pink Friday Tour to Phoenix in 2012

By the time Minaj made her next appearance in the Valley, she was headlining her own Pink Friday Tour, which played Comerica Theatre (now Arizona Financial Theatre) in Phoenix on Aug. 7, 2012.

Released in November 2010, “Pink Friday” was Minaj’s debut studio release. It hit the charts at No. 2, making its way to the top on the way to going triple-platinum.

Two songs from "Pink Friday" – “Your Love” and “Moment 4 Life” (which featured Drake) – hit No. 1 on Billboard’s rap charts.

Six songs went Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 – “Your Love,” “Check It Out” (with will.i.am), “Right Thru Me,” “Moment 4 Life,” “Super Bass” and “Fly” (with Rihanna).

The album’s biggest hit, by far, was “Super Bass,” which peaked at No. 3 and was certified Diamond for sales of 10 million units, winning an MTV Video Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Video.

The success of “Pink Friday” inspired two sequels – 2012’s double-platinum “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” and 2023’s “Pink Friday 2,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100.

What Nicki Minaj learned from Lil Wayne and Britney Spears

In 2011, before she launched her Pink Friday Tour, Minaj spoke to the Los Angeles Times and reflected on what opening for Lil Wayne and Britney Spears had taught her about how to entertain a crowd.

“Britney’s production is so amazing,” she said. “When I sat out there the first night to watch it, I felt like I was a kid at an amusement park. It was so much, the lights, the content and the props.

"Whereas Wayne, he teaches me how to command a crowd. His comfort level and how he makes people feel like he’s their best friend when he’s onstage. He has that command. If you can put both of those two things into a show, you can really do an amazing show – that’s my goal.

"Am I gonna be able to do these humongous venues within the next year? Probably not. But am I gonna put on an amazing show and give everyone something that’s gonna be well worth what they paid? Absolutely yes.”

Minaj brings her Pink Friday 2 World Tour to Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix on Wednesday, March 13. It's her fourth and most extensive headlining tour, playing 56 dates.

In an Instagram livestream, she promised, “This will be a very different feeling tour, even if you've been to every Nicki Minaj tour that's ever existed.”

Nicki Minaj setlist: What she played on the 2011 Femme Fatale Tour
