Hawaii is a clear choice for families looking to take a tropical beach vacation in the U.S. Each Hawaiian island is unique, as are the family-friendly beachfront resorts on those islands. Whether you're looking for an upscale luxury oasis or a laid-back beach retreat, you'll find it among the islands' varied options.

No matter which Hawaiian island or resort you choose, you are guaranteed to experience Hawaii's "Spirit of Aloha," with island-inspired food made with local ingredients and opportunities to learn about Hawaii's rich heritage and culture, with some educational activities that are designed specifically for kids.

If you are planning your first family trip to Hawaii or just looking for the next spot to try, we've taken the guesswork out of choosing a resort with these 11 family-friendly resorts across Hawaii, from the Big Island to Kauai.

Top family hotels in Oahu

For some travelers, Oahu is synonymous with the high-rise hotels lining beautiful Waikiki Beach, but there are family-friendly resorts all over the island. The good news is that no matter where you stay, a vacation in Oahu tends to be less expensive than on other Hawaiian islands.

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa is directly on Waikiki Beach and within walking distance of the city's open-air shopping and dining center, the Waikiki Beach Walk. While we encourage you to explore beyond just Waikiki, this can be the perfect location if you are looking for a beach retreat on Oahu that's not too far from the excitement of the city.

The hotel opened in 1901, and its history shines through in the Victorian-era architecture and select guest rooms inspired by the hotel's opening-day design and decor. The hotel has 793 rooms total, including 46 suites, divided among the historic Banyan Wing, the beach-adjacent Diamond Wing and the larger, modern rooms in the Tower Wing.

The hotel's pool is simple compared to some of the large pool complexes in Hawaii, but it has fantastic beach views. You can easily pop back and forth between the pool and the beach all day long, especially if you rent a poolside cabana or an umbrella and chairs on the sandy beach. You can also take to the ocean on a surfboard, stand-up paddleboard or bodyboard. Outrigger canoe charters and surf lessons are also available. Guests can book all of these at the Aloha Beach Services kiosk at the hotel.

The Moana Surfrider also has a spa, beachfront yoga classes, historical tours, hula classes and more. Also, your family will never go hungry with the hotel's five restaurants and a handful of lounges and cafes.

Rates at Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa start at around $300 or 56,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

If your family loves Hawaii and visiting Disney, you'll likely enjoy a stay at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa on Oahu. Even if you aren't a "Disney family," you can still love this resort.

For example, you can spend your time meeting Disney characters, eating Mickey waffles and participating in activities like animation classes and watching outdoor Disney movie screenings. Or, you can just lounge by the beach, snorkel in the hotel's private lagoon and participate in fun and educational activities like lei making and hula lessons led by local artisans and cultural experts.

Kids ages 4 to 12 can visit the 5,200-square-foot kids club called Aunty's Beach House. Games, arts and crafts, movies and surprise character experiences are included in the cost of your stay, with some premium activities available for an additional fee.

The resort also has six pools with waterslides and hidden grottos, a full-service spa, two restaurants, three lounges and quick-service options when you are out and about by the beach or the pool. Guest rooms range from standard one-king or two-queen rooms to villas that sleep up to 12 guests with as many as three bedrooms.

Pro tip: You can even book some of the room types by renting Disney Vacation Club points for even less than the cost of booking directly with Disney with cash.

Rates at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa start at around $569 per night when booked with cash or from about $336 if booked with rented points from a site like David's Vacation Club .

Guests of the only luxury resort on Oahu's North Shore have come to expect luxe accommodations, authentic Hawaiian experiences and dining options and unforgettable tropical adventures. Luckily, Turtle Bay Resort delivers on those promises … and then some.

Families visiting the resort can experience the true essence of Hawaii with beachfront horse and pony rides, surf lessons, a "surfing with dogs" experience (yes, you read that right), mermaid lessons, canoe tours, scavenger hunts and more. Some experiences require an additional fee.

The hotel's pool deck has large family-size cabanas available to rent, giving parents a comfortable place to lounge and kids a shady spot to relax before hopping back in the main pool or the kids' pool with waterslides.

Guest rooms are bright and airy, with ocean views and large murals depicting beachy scenes. Suites and oceanfront bungalows are also available.

Rates at Turtle Bay Resort start at around $707 per night.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort is a sprawling resort in the heart of Waikiki, with direct access to Duke Kahanamoku Beach and views of the iconic Diamond Head volcanic cone.

The hotel has eight towers (though three of those are dedicated to Hilton Grand Vacations) and more than 2,800 guest rooms, so you will want to build in travel time for traversing the resort — or choose a room in the Rainbow Tower, which is closest to the beach and pool area if that is where you plan to spend most of your time.

The resort has five outdoor pools, waterslides and a saltwater lagoon for swimming, paddleboarding and other water activities. If you can pull your kids away from the water, the hotel also holds hula and lei-making lessons, fitness classes, fish feeding and luau feasts with traditional Samoan, Tahitian and Hawaiian dancing every Sunday through Thursday.

In addition to the lagoonside luau feast, Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort has nearly 20 restaurants, cafes and lounges, so you are never too far from your next meal or drink.

Rates at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort start at around $250 or 70,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Top family hotels in Maui

Maui is quieter and more secluded than Oahu, offering families off-the-beaten-path beaches and outdoor adventures. The resorts here are on the pricier side, but they have the amenities, accommodations and spectacular views to merit the higher price tag.

family trip hawaii

This luxury hotel boasts 446 guest rooms and suites across 54 acres of vibrant green gardens, crystal-clear pools and turquoise ocean waters. The resort's newest rooms, the Fire Lanai Collection, have lanais with private fire pits. Club-level rooms come with a dedicated concierge, a lounge with gourmet food and drinks, activities like cooking demonstrations and cocktail classes, and rooms with beautiful ocean views. Because the resort is so large, there are plenty of dining options and activities to choose from around the grounds.

You can choose to spend your day swimming in the massive three-tiered, heated pool with a kids' splash area, hiking the area's coastal trails, surfing or paddleboarding at one of six nearby bays and beaches, or participating in cultural programming, including a nightly sunset ceremony, hula lessons, origami classes and more. There's also environmental children's programming for kids ages 5 to 14 available for an additional cost.

Guest rooms have lavish marble bathrooms, dark wood floors, neutral furnishings and pops of colorful, island-inspired decor. Rooms have large soaking tubs (always a favorite with kids) and private lanais, some with fire pits.

Rates at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua start at around $760 or 80,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Note: Due to the Maui wildfires , the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa is only accepting reservations for stays starting on Nov. 17, 2023, and later.

The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa is directly on the world-renowned Ka'anapali Beach. The only thing standing between you and Maui's best beach is a large lagoon-style pool with waterfalls and a water playground for kids, so you can easily bounce back and forth between the pool and the sea all day long.

The resort has 779 guest rooms and 31 suites, all of which have private lanais and sliding glass doors so that you can enjoy the views whether you are inside or outside of your room. Regency Club access rooms come with exclusive lounge access and evening hors d'oeuvre service.

In addition to four on-site restaurants and a coffee shop, guests can attend the resort's Drums of the Pacific Luau on select nights each week. The luau features authentic dances, a delicious meal and an exciting Samoan fireknife finale.

Rates at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa start at around $760 or 25,000 World of Hyatt points per night.

The Wailea Beach Resort offers a laid-back, casual retreat with access to not one but two beaches. The resort has a long list of family-friendly features, including multiple pools (one of which has kid-friendly splash play areas and Maui's longest waterslide), a kids club for children ages 5 to 12, a movie screening room with giant beanbag chairs, a game room and complimentary cultural activities.

Guest rooms are simple yet stylish, with ocean-inspired artwork and neutral-colored furnishings. Each of the resort's 547 rooms has a lanai, and select ground-floor rooms have large furnished lanais with direct access to the hotel's outdoor areas.

Families can dine on Hawaiian-inspired fare at the poolside open-air Kapa Bar & Grill or the Mo' Bettah Food Truck. Parents can get their caffeine fix at the resort's Starbucks location or have a romantic evening away from the kids at Humble Market Kitchin, which offers panoramic views of the beach. The resort also hosts a luau five nights a week.

Rates at Wailea Beach Resort currently start at $720 or 73,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

If your family is in the market for an upscale island retreat that fully embraces Hawaii's natural beauty and distinct culture, you'll find exactly the vacation you crave at the Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort .

Guest rooms look out over the ocean or the resort's gardened grounds, and all rooms have private lanais. Standard rooms are closest to the resort activities and restaurants, or you can upgrade to a Napua room or suite with contemporary Hawaiian design and access to a private lounge with three daily dining times and live entertainment.

Families can spend time together at the huge Wailea Canyon Activity Pool — a six-level pool connected by waterslides, a lazy river, waterfalls, caves, a rope swing and the world's only water elevator. Kids can also pick up a "Grand Passport" that lists all of the kid-friendly cultural activities around the resort, including garden tours, kukui nut bracelet-making and more.

The resort's dining options have something for all palates, from sushi in the Botero Lounge to tacos and wood-fired pizzas at Aloha Trick Pony and a luau on select nights . Breakfast is served buffet-style at Ikena, a unique indoor-outdoor restaurant space.

Rates at Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort start at around $830 or 110,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

Your kids may not have seen the first season of " The White Lotus ," but there's a pretty good chance you've heard of it. Now, you can stay at the very hotel where the show was filmed and enjoy the same luxury accommodations, upscale amenities and delicious local dining … without any of the drama.

The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is a luxury beachfront resort offering an idyllic escape that is still family-friendly. Like many Four Seasons properties, this resort participates in Kids for All Seasons, a complimentary, supervised program for kids ages 5 to 12. The hotel also has a seasonal counselor-led program for tweens and teens where they can participate in outdoor activities like outrigger canoe paddling.

While the kids play, parents can participate in yoga classes, indulge in a spa treatment (or two), relax on the beach or swim in the adults-only pool. From fine dining at Wolfgang Puck's Spago to casual fare at the pool bar, all of the resort's restaurants are open-air, so you never have to leave behind the ocean views.

The 383 guest rooms and suites are stylish and sophisticated, with views of either the ocean or the radiant gardens. From the hotel's elevated location, you may even be lucky enough to see whales splashing in the ocean from your lanai during wintertime.

Rates at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea currently start at around $1,400 per night.

Top family hotels in Kauai

Kauai, known as the Garden Island, offers families the best of the beach and the island's emerald green peaks and valleys. It takes only about an hour to drive from the south end of the island to the north end, giving families the opportunity to see favorite landmarks like Hanalei Bay, Waimea Canyon State Park and Kalalau Lookout, depending on where you stay.

family trip hawaii

On Kauai's beautiful, tranquil north shore, The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas is just as serene as its island location. The resort grounds more than live up to the island's "Garden Isle" nickname, with towering palm trees dotting the landscape and colorful tropical foliage around every turn.

The resort has a long list of family-friendly amenities, including lei making, fish feeding, a children's pool with splash features and a mini waterslide, a larger cliffside plunge pool, multiple dining options and a grab-and-go market with snacks, Starbucks coffee and essentials you may have forgotten at home, like diapers or sunscreen.

Because of the resort's cliffside location, there is no direct beach access, but beautiful Hanalei Bay is only a 10-minute drive away.

Unlike most resorts, The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas does not charge resort fees and offers complimentary internet access. Guest room sizes range from studio villas to two-bedroom villas, and all suites have separate sleeping and living areas and private outdoor lanais.

Rates at The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas start at around $400 or 76,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

How Much is the Average Family Vacation to Hawaii?

The cost of your trip to Hawaii will depend on numerous factors, including where you go, when you go, and the type of accommodations you choose. However, the average cost of a 10-day trip during peak time (June) clocks in at around $13,000 for a family of four. That price includes airfare, hotel, rental car, food, and activities.

Of course, this is just a cost estimate. If that price seems a little steep, there are many ways that you can save on costs . For example, you might choose to stay in a hotel further away from the ocean or at a vacation rental with a kitchen, so you won’t have to eat out for every meal.

What is the Best Hawaii Island for Kids?

Each island has something to offer, so it’s important to consider the type of vacation you want when choosing where to base yourself.

For example, Oahu is a great option if you’re trying to watch your vacation budget, as there are more options for affordable resorts around the island. Maui is ideal for beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts, while Kauai is better suited for those who want to be immersed in nature. And if you want to visit volcanoes and beautiful national parks, then the Big Island is definitely the way to go!

If you’re still undecided, check out this article for a full comparison.

Is Maui or Oahu Better for Kids?

While we love all the islands for a family vacation – many people usually end up choosing either Maui or Oahu. Both islands have their own unique characteristics and vibes, but at the end of the day, we generally opt for Maui when it comes to a family vacation. Not only will you have nice beaches and national parks, but there’s also a varied mix of fun activities that kids of all ages will enjoy.

But don’t get us wrong – we love Oahu too! And while it has a distinct city vibe (it’s home to the bustling city of Honolulu , after all), there are still quiet and laid-back places where you can enjoy your relaxing vacation. And one of our absolute favorite family friendly resorts is on the island.

For more Maui vs Oahu comparisons, check out this article .

22 Best Family Resorts in Hawaii

As we mentioned, finding a hotel in Hawaii that accommodates families is not hard. However, there are clearly some hotels that are better than others. For this reason, we put together an exhaustive list of all our favorite family-friendly hotels (in no particular order) based on location, room quality, dining options, and kid-friendly activities and amenities.

Best Family Resorts Hawaii Turtle Bay

Turtle Bay Resort – Oahu

Situated on the North Shore of Oahu, Turtle Bay Resort is the perfect family retreat for those looking for an island getaway. As it is far from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu and Waikiki, Turtle Bay Resort has a laid-back atmosphere – albeit with a few luxury touches. And you can choose from different sized rooms, from basic guest studios to 4-bedroom ocean villas.

To start, you’ll have 1,300 acres of beachfront to explore, including the shallow kid-friendly beaches of Keiki Cove and Stables Beach. There are also four different pools on the property if you prefer something less sandy. Little ones will love the water slides at the Keiki Pool, while adults can enjoy some me-time at the adult-only infinity pool.

Turtle Bay Resort also has a seemingly never-ending list of activities you can participate in. You can take a ukulele or hula lesson, play a game of pickleball at the on-site courts, or get up close with the resort’s ponies. The Brave Mermaid Show is another huge hit, plus aspiring mermaids can also join her academy to splash around in the pool with their own set of fins.

And the best luau on Oahu is located just a short drive away from Turtle Bay. See a full list of our favorite luaus on Oahu .

Turtle Bay Resort Features

Activities: Cultural classes, pony meet-and-greet, mermaid show and academy, pickle ball court rental Kid’s Club: No Restaurants: 7 on-site restaurants and 1 luau show Pools: Three pools for all guests and one reserved for bungalow rooms Nearby: Keiki Beach, Kawela Bay Beach Park, Kuilima Cove

Turtle Bay is one of the best family resorts in Hawaii, a bird's eye view of the resort from off the coast.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort – Oahu

This is the only beachfront resort in the exclusive area of Kahala (on the other side of Diamond Head, just 15 minutes from downtown Waikiki). And despite being one of the most luxurious resorts on the island, the Kahala Hotel manages to retain a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

Besides the beach, the hotel also has an outdoor swimming pool with food and drink service. But the real highlight of the Kahala is the natural ocean lagoon, which is home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins where guests can book different dolphin encounters and experiences.

In terms of free activities, families can choose from a variety of cultural classes. Other activities, like fitness classes, standup paddle boarding, and kayaking will cost extra. The on-site kids club is also an extra fee, although a worthwhile option if you want to have a child-free day or afternoon to spend at the spa or pool.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort Features

Activities: Cultural classes, fitness classes, bike rentals, dolphin encounter, touch tank, and coral talks Kid’s Club: Yes (paid) Restaurants: 6 restaurants Pools: 1 pool (pay attention to adult-only swim times in the morning) Nearby: Kahala Beach, Waiʻalae Beach Park

A father and son jumping into an oval shaped pool at the Kahala Hotel, one of the best family resorts in Hawaii

Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club – Oahu

Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club is an excellent option for small families as well as large groups. Choose from 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom villas and enjoy the comforts of home (fully equipped kitchens, separate living areas, dining table) while also having the benefits of a beautiful waterfront resort.

There are three pools on the property, as well as 7 outdoor whirlpools, a spa, and a fitness studio. It’s important to note that there aren’t many organized activities like what you would find at some of the bigger name resorts, although they do host a few cultural classes, like lei making, throughout the week.

While some people might love the secluded location on the west side of the island, others may find it too far from other attractions. However, you will be the only hotel on Lagoon 3, which is a tranquil and protected area where your kids can snorkel or swim.

Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club Features

Activities: Some cultural classes Kid’s Club: No Restaurants: 3 restaurants, an on-site marketplace, and an on-site once-a-week luau show Pools: 3 pools – the Lagoon/Family Pool, the Nai’a Pool, and the Quiet Reflection Pool Nearby: Ko Olina Lagoons, Ko Olina Golf Course, Kapolei Commons Shopping Mall

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa – Oahu

If you want to make magical lifelong memories on your vacation, then book a stay at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa . Disney has excelled at creating imaginative and immersive experiences around the world – and this resort is no exception.

And even if you’re not a die-hard Disney fan, you can still enjoy the beauty of the grounds and the bountiful activities they have to offer. Think Disney character meet-and-greets, Hawaiian cultural classes, star gazing, fire pit storytelling, live music, and more. If you want more traditional vacation activities, you can also rent boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, or paddleboards to explore the nearby Ko Olina Lagoons.

The pool area is also nothing short of outstanding. There’s an interactive kid’s splash zone, a rapid river for tubing, and a pool with play structures and water slides (adults also have a few adult-only pools to choose from too). Or you can snorkel with marine life in the hotel’s private and protected saltwater lagoon. But keep in mind that just like Disneyland, this hotel is crowded.

When booking your room, keep in mind that a family of four can sleep comfortably in the standard rooms at the resort. If you’d like more space or the option to cook, you can book one of their suites or villas.

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa Features

Activities: Hawaiian cultural classes, character meet-and-greets, live entertainment, stargazing Kid’s Club: Yes – Aunty’s Beach House (free) Restaurants: 9 restaurants and lounges, 1 on-site luau Pools: Pools, play areas, water slides, lazy river – you name it, Aulani has it  Nearby: Ko Olina Lagoons, Ko Olina Golf Course, Kapolei Commons Shopping Mall

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina – Oahu

The luxurious Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is guaranteed to be the backdrop to your amazing vacation. With so much to keep both kids and adults occupied, it’s arguably one of the best resorts in Ko Olina.

For activities, guests can unwind by the pool (there are four, including a Keiki Pool designed just for kids), snorkel in the blue Ko Olina Lagoons, or play a round of tennis on their ocean-view courts. They also have an extensive program of activities which includes the Stars Above Hawaii stargazing program and the Four Seasons Wayfinders cultural classes, both of which we know kids will love.

Most importantly, the Four Seasons offers a complimentary kid’s club for guests between the ages of 5 and 12, where they can participate in arts and crafts, sports, and nature walks. They also have seasonal kid’s activities like skateboard camps, summer glamping, and artistic workshops.

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina Features

Activities: Cultural classes, golf, tennis, stargazing, water sport rental Kid’s Club: Yes – free for kids 5 to 12 and paid babysitting services are avaialbe. Various kid’s camps are available throughout the year as well Restaurants: 7 restaurants Pools: 4 pools – Keiki Pool, Adult Infinity Pool, Ohana Pool, and Spa & Wellness Pool Nearby: Ko Olina Lagoons, Ko Olina Golf Course, Kapolei Commons Shopping Mall

Royal Hawaiian – Oahu

If you’re walking along Waikiki Beach, you can’t miss this iconic pastel-pink hotel. The historic Royal Hawaiian is a great option if you want to be close to all the action, as it’s located in the heart of Waikiki next to tons of restaurants, bars, and retail shops.

There’s only one pool on the property – the Malulani Pool – although guests are more than welcome to use the Helumoa Playground located next door at the Sheraton Waikiki. This is a huge benefit for families, as it features two pools, a 70-foot-long water slide, interactive kid’s fountains, and water toy rentals.

Throughout the week, you can participate in various cultural activities like lei making, lauhala weaving, and ukulele lessons. The resort also offers morning yoga, an intro to stand up paddle board class, and Go Pro Hero 8 rentals (all for free). Little ones can also participate in programs at the Poppins Keiki Center, the on-site children’s day club at the Royal Hawaiian.

Royal Hawaiian Features

Activities: Cultural classes, morning yoga, stand up paddle board demonstration, Go Pro rental Kid’s Club: Yes – the Poppins Keiki Center (paid) Restaurants: 4 restaurants and a twice weekly luau Pools: The Malulani Pool on-site and the shared kid-friendly Helumoa Playground with the nearby Sheraton Waikiki Nearby: Waikiki Beach, Royal Hawaiian Center

Fairmont Kea Lani – Maui

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel with some of the most spacious rooms in Maui, then the Fairmont Kea Lani is for you. This resort offers spacious 1-bedroom suites (860 – 1100 sq ft) and 2- or 3-bedroom villas (1800 – 2200 sq ft). Having a separate sleeping area (and a full kitchen and private pool if you’re in the villa) really makes a huge difference when traveling with kids.

Parents and kids will equally love the Fairmont’s outdoor pool. Well, it’s actually a multi-level pool connected by an exhilarating 140-foot water slide. And for more inexperienced swimmers, there’s a Keiki pool where they can play in the shallow waters with toys. They also host different kid-friendly events throughout the week, like intro to scuba for kids class, ninja obstacle courses, and even henna tattooing. And don’t worry – there’s an adult-only pool for those who need some relaxation too!

However, one of the best parts about staying here is the Keiki Dining Program, which allows kids under the age of 5 get to eat free! Older kids between 6 and 12 will also receive 50% off full-prized entrees from the adult menu.

Fairmont Kea Lani Features

Activities: Cultural classes, canoe experience, scavenger hunt, koi fish feeding Kid’s Club: Yes – Keiki Lani Kid’s Club Restaurants: 5 restaurants (3 of which offer the Keiki Dining Plan) Pools: 3 pools – two kid-friendly pools with water slides and one adult-only pool Nearby: Polo Beach, Shops at Wailea

Ka’anapali Beach Hotel – Maui

The recently renovated Ka’anapli Beach Hotel is an affordable alternative to the many high-end resorts along the golden shores of Ka’anapali Beach. And it’s right next to Black Rock , one of the best places on the island for snorkeling and cliff diving.

The rooms aren’t super large (the average size is just 425 sq ft), however, they do have a private lanai which is not always common for other budget hotels. If you need more space, we recommend booking the Ocean Front Suite, which has a separate bedroom and living area to accommodate 5 people.

Their pool is also on the small side, but with the beautiful shores of the pacific ocean just steps away, you can easily spend all your days at the beach instead. Snorkel gear, stand up paddle boards, and body boards can all be rented at the Ocean Activities booth at the hotel.

Other family-friendly activities include hula dancing, kukui lei making, bark cloth dying, and instrument making. However, the highlight is the nightly hula show on the outdoor terrace of Huihui restaurant. It’s a great way to keep the kids entertained while you enjoy the sunset with a tropical cocktail in hand.

Ka’anapali Beach Hotel Features

Activities: Cultural classes, nightly hula dancing, live music Kid’s Club: No Restaurants: 2 restaurants and a lobby coffee shop Pools: One whale-shaped pool (a bit small) Nearby: Black Rock Beach, Whalers Village

The Westin Maui Resort and Spa at Ka’anapali

The Westin is paradise on earth, with lush tropical grounds, a fantastic pool area, and a prime location in the heart of Ka’anapali Beach. There are six pools on the property, giving you an astounding 87,000 sq ft of space to hang out. Kids can play in the fountains of the Keiki Splash Zone or shoot down the 270-foot water slide, while parents can enjoy the picturesque ocean views from the adult-only infinity pool.

The Westin has a fun and interactive kids club for your little ones (aged 5 to 12). Activities change each day but may include arts and crafts, animal expeditions, Hawaiian culture classes, and nature adventures.

The Westin Maui

Activities: Cultural classes, live music, evening sunset ritual, wildlife and tropical plant tour, koi fish feeding, fitness classes Kid’s Club: Yes – Westin Family Kids Club for kids aged 5 to 12 Restaurants: 3 restaurants and 2 grocery markets Pools: 6 pools with a special kid’s splash zone and waterslide Nearby: Whaler’s Village, Black Rock Beach

Grand Wailea – Maui

If your dream vacation is having access to an amazing pool, then you will absolutely love your time at the Grand Wailea . You won’t just have one pool to hang out in – you’ll have nine! The Grand Wailea pool area is one of the most elaborate outdoor spaces in all of Maui, with four water slides, a lazy river, waterfalls, a rope swing, and a cave grotto (with a bar!).

And while the resort is famous for its pools, there are so many other things that you’ll love about your stay. Beach yoga, outrigger tours, cultural classes, art galleries, boutique shops – these are just a few activities that you can do on-site. Kids will also get their very own Grand Passport on check-in, with kid-friendly maps and activities to keep them engaged on vacation.

More adventurous guests may also try the scuba program. The Grand Wailea is home to the only resort-designated scuba training pool in Hawaii, so make sure to take advantage of their free first-time diver lessons (available to adults and kids over 12).

Grand Wailea Features

Activities: Scuba training program, cultural classes, outrigger tours, garden tours, sunset torch lighting, sunrise chant Kid’s Club: Yes – Camp Grande Restaurants: 7 restaurants and bars and 1 on-site luau Pools: 9 amazing pools with waterslides, a kid’s splash area, a lazy river, and more Nearby: Wailea Beach, the Shops at Wailea, Wailea Blue Golf Course

best family resorts in Hawaii - Grand Wailea

Wailea Beach Resort – Maui

If you want to stay in the heart of Wailea with plenty of activities to keep you busy, then the Wailea Beach Resort might be the best option for your family. It’s not directly on the beach (which can be a dealbreaker for some), although you can reach Wailea Beach or Ulua Beach in 10 minutes by taking the scenic Wailea Beach Path.

And you might not miss the beach considering that Wailea Beach Resort has three awesome pools – one of which is home to Hawaii’s longest water slide. Nearby, you’ll also find the family-friendly Ohi Pools and the adult-only Maluhia Pool (which features their signature floating overwater cabanas).

The Wailea Beach Resort has some really great amenities that you won’t find at other resorts. In addition to their sleek and modern kids club, they also have an in-house movie theater (3x daily showings), gaming area (foosball, arcade games, board games), and nightly s’more roasting. In addition, you can also sign up for one of their complimentary cultural activities or fitness classes.

Wailea Beach Resort Features

Activities: Cultural classes, movie theater, gaming area, s’more roasting, fitness classes Kid’s Club: Yes – the Kolohe Keiki Club for kids aged 5 to 12 Restaurants: 8 restaurants and bars (1 food truck and 1 on-site luau) Pools: 3 pools – Nala Adventure Pools (waterslides, splash zone), Ohi Pools, Maluhia Pool Nearby: Wailea Beach, Ulua Beach, the Shops at Wailea

Best Family Resorts Hawaii

Montage Kapalua Bay – Maui

On the rugged northwestern coast of Maui sits the 5-star Montage Kapalua Bay. The hotel is an idylic tropical oasis, with luxury facilities and an abundance of activities for kids as well as their parents.

The Montage has three on-site pools, although you won’t find any kid-focused playthings like water slides or splash zones. For that reason, we’re glad the hotel offers the Paintbox day camp, where kids can play games, make crafts, or take adventures down to the beach or tide pools. Three times a week, they also have a “Children’s Night Out” Program, so parents can have a relaxing dinner out while the little ones can do fun evening activities.

The residential-style rooms are ultra-spacious, with their most basic 1-bedroom suite clocking in at a whopping 1,250 sq ft. It (along with all their rooms) comes with full gourmet kitchens, washers and dryers, and separate living and dining areas, so you can really feel like you are right at home on vacation.

Montage Kapalua Bay Features

Activities: Cultural classes, guided hikes, mermaid academy, whale talks, live music Kid’s Club: Yes – the Paintbox Restaurants: 3 restaurants and bars Pools: 3 pools – Sunset Pool, Beach Club Infinity Pool, Spa Pool (16+) Nearby: Kapalua Cliffhouse, Kapalua Bay Beach

best family resorts in Hawaii - Montage Kapalua

Honu Kai Resort & Spa- Maui

Can’t decide between a resort and a vacation rental? The Honu Kai Resort & Spa is the perfect blend of both. Not only will you have the full amenities of a condo (kitchen, washer and dryer, etc.), but you will also enjoy having a pool and gourmet restaurants right outside your door.

They offer everything from luxury studios all the way up to 2,000 sq ft 3-bedroom villas. However, each unit is individually owned, so it’s important that you read reviews and check out photos for your specific rental, as quality and condition can vary.

Unlike other vacation rentals in the area, the Honu Kai pool area is equal to (if not better) than many of the other resorts in North Ka’anapali. It has three swimming areas, five hot tubs, a waterslide, and even a cascading waterfall.

The biggest downside of staying here is the lack of organized activities. If you’re planning to spend most of your time at the pool or exploring Maui, this shouldn’t be a big deal. But others wanting more on-site options in terms of classes or kids programs may want to stick to one of our other recommendations.

Honu Kai Resort & Spa Features

Activities: None Kid’s Club: None Restaurants: Dukes Beach House and an on-site market and general store Pools: 3 swimming pools with a waterslide Nearby: Ka’anapali Beach

best family resorts in Hawaii - Honu Kai Resort

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa – the Big Island

With a picture-perfect location right on the Kohala Coast, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa has direct access to the sparkling ‘Anaeho’omalu Bay. The hotel grounds are impeccably beautiful as well, with swaying palm trees, tropical gardens, and some of the best views for watching the sunset.

Plus the pool area is massive! There’s a large infinity pool, a separate pool with a water slide, and even a shallow pool made just for kids. Even if you prefer to spend your time soaking up the sun on a lounger, you’ll still enjoy the pool area thanks to the little frozen “pool pleaser” treats that get passed around during the day.

Hotel activities include beach yoga, pool fitness classes, or cultural activities, however, you’re more than welcome to rent beach gear or book an excursion with the A’Bay Beach Hut down by the water (although you will need to pay for the rentals). Save by booking activities ahead of time and check out the best activities and tours on the Big Island.

To enhance your experience, we recommend booking a room in the brand new Na Hale Wing. These 1- and 2-bedroom suites have much more space and beautiful ocean-facing views. For something unique, book one of the shower suits, which has an outdoor garden rain shower!

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa Features

Activities: cultural classes, beach yoga, pool fitness classes, guided tours, petroglyph field excursion Kid’s Club: No Restaurants: 1 restaurant, 1 coffee shop, 1 on-site luau Pools: 3 pools, including one with a waterslide and one just for children Nearby: ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach, Queen’s Marketplace, and more things to do in Waikoloa

best family resorts in Hawaii - Waikoloa Beach Marriott

Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa – the Big Island

In our opinion, the Outrigger Konda Resort & Spa is one of the best family-friendly hotels on the Kona side of the island. And whilst the resort isn’t on the beach (Keauhou Bay Beach Park is an 8-minute walk from the resort), it does have a great pool that the kids will love. There’s a thrilling 200-foot waterslide as well as a shallow area with a sandy bottom for the less adventurous ones.

Guests can take advantage of the various organized activities, which include lei making, ukulele playing, and fitness classes. However, the coolest activity offered at the Outrigger is manta ray viewing. This is one of the best spots on the island where you can see giant manta rays right in front of the hotel. For a more immersive experience, book a night snorkeling tour to see these majestic creatures up close.

The rooms are somewhat small (430 sq ft) and a little outdated, but suitable for small families. If you want more room for the kids to play, we recommend booking one of their oceanfront suites instead. Not only are they twice as large, but they also feature a separate bedroom, a pull-out sofa bed, and access to the Voyager 47 club lounge.

Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa Features

Activities: Cultural activities, Manta Ray talk, outdoor games (tennis, basketball, bocce ball), yoga and fitness classes, paddleboard rental Kid’s Club: No Restaurants: The Holua Poolside Bar & Lounge and the Wailele Café Pools: Yes, with a waterslide and a shallow sand area for kids Nearby: Kona Point, Keauhou Bay Beach Park

Best family resorts Hawaii - Outrigger Kona

Mauna Lani – the Big Island

This award-winning resort is subtle luxury at its finest. Adults will love the sleek decor and upscale vibe while kids can enjoy the unique amenities and treats created especially for them. But despite what you may think, the Mauna Lani is anything but stuffy and uptight, so it’s great for those who want to enjoy a bit of rest and relaxation on their trip.

It all starts with the complimentary keiki club, where they’ll spend the day taking cooking classes, doing cultural activities, or playing in the pool or ocean. The resort also has a kiddie pool and a kid beach (a protected cove where they can swim and snorkel). And you can’t forget the Great Lawn, one of the coolest hang-out areas with lawn games and a food truck.

Almost 90% of rooms on the property are ocean-view, so you can wake up to the sunrise and crashing ocean waves outside your window. Depending on your party, you’ll have lots of options for rooms. Larger families can stay in one of the suites or private residences, which range in size from 1,040 to 4,000 sq ft. Or you can book a 2-bedroom suite or connecting room, as there’s always to option to add a rollaway bed or crib.

Mauna Lani Features

Activities: Lawn games, cultural experiences, culinary classes Kid’s Club: Yes, for ages 5 to 12 (free) Restaurants: 4 restaurants (with inclusive kids menu) and a market Pools: 3 pools – the 3,900 sq ft Resort Pool, the adult only pool, and the Keiki Pool Nearby: Kalahuipua’a Historic Park, 49 Black Sand Beach

Four Seasons Hualalai – the Big Island

When you stay at the Four Seasons Hualalai, you won’t have to sacrifice luxury for a family-friendly atmosphere. This resort seamlessly does both, making it a great option for guests of any age.

The family amenities are really something special, with child welcome gifts, kid-sized robes, and free access to the Children’s video library (which is a lifesaver during naptime or bedtime!). They also have a complimentary kid’s program for younger guests (5 to 12) and a seasonal camp experience for those aged 9 to 17.

But even without all the cool kid amenities, the resort is still one of our top choices thanks to the beautiful property, which has eight outdoor pools. A family-friendly infinity pool, an ambient cocktail pool, a lap pool, shallow keiki pool – the Four Seasons has it all! But most of all, we love the King’s Pond and Marine Center, which contains over 1,000 different kinds of tropical fish. It’s ideal for snorkeling, especially if your kids are too intimidated by going in the ocean!

Four Seasons Hualalai Features

Activities: Cultural activities, marine life experiences, water sports Kid’s Club: Yes, complimentary Keiki club for 5 to 12 and paid seasonal summer camp Restaurants: 6 restaurants (kids under 4 eat for free!) Pools: 8 pools, including a kid’s pool and a tropical lagoon for snorkeling or fish feeding Nearby: Turtle’s Cove, Kikaua Point Park

best family resorts in Hawaii - Four Seasons Hualalai

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel – the Big Island

With a picture-postcard location on the sparkling shores of the famous Kauna’oa Beach, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is a top pick if you’re craving outdoor adventure. Snorkeling, swimming, canoeing, boogie boarding, even manta ray watching! This is a huge plus, considering that the hotel pool is quite small.

However, easy access to the beach is only of the main selling points of the Mauna Kea. Kids will be spoiled for choice by the sheer number of activities offered at the hotel. Their daily activity calendar includes an array of cultural classes, fitness classes, and live music and entertainment. They can also join the Keiki Club for a day of games, arts, and nature exploration with their fellow travelers.

Families can book their stay in the main building (Tower Rooms) or in the brand new Beachfront Wing. Rooms in either area start at 590 sq ft, which is quite generous compared to other resorts in this price range. Those needing more space can upgrade to one of the suites, which have separate living areas and start at 1,268 sq ft in size.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Features

Activities: Cultural activities, intro to sports classes, golf, tennis Kid’s Club: Yes, for a fee Restaurants: Manta Restaurant, Hau Tree, and Number 3 Restaurant (on the golf course). On-site luau dinner is also available Pools: One pool (no slides or activities for kids) Nearby: Kauna’oa Beach, Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area

best family resorts in Hawaii - Mauna Kea

Hilton Waikoloa Village – the Big Island

When it comes to big family resorts, the Hilton Waikoloa Village is arguably one of the most impressive. Covering over 62 acres of land on the Kohala Coast, this resort is a world in its own, with 1,000 rooms, three pools, 9 restaurants and bars, and even its very own saltwater lagoon. It’s so big that there’s even a resort tram to help you travel from one place to another!

As you can imagine, the Hilton also has a massive list of fun activities for the whole family. However, we find that your little ones will probably want to spend most of the time snorkeling, kayaking, or even aqua-biking in the lagoon. There are tons of tropical fish and even turtles that you can see swimming here. And there’s also the neighboring Dolphin Quest Lagoon, which offers the only hands-on dolphin experience on the Big Island.

When they’re not in the lagoon, your kids can also play in the pools, walk across the rope bridge, slide down the 175-foot water side, or float down the river canal.

Hilton Waikoloa Village Features

Activities: Daily cultural classes, daily fitness classes, kayaking, paddleboarding, aquabiking, dolphin interaction experience Kid’s Club: Yes – ages 5 and up Restaurants: 9 different restaurants and bars and an on-site luau (3x a week) Pools: 3 pools – Kona Pool, Kohala Pool, Ocean Tower Adults Only Pool Nearby: Queen’s Marketplace, Waikoloa Beach

Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu – Kauai

As the winner of the Best Pool in America award by USA Today for the third year in a row, the Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu is the perfect setting for an action-packed trip to Kauai. With a lush garden setting, waterfalls, waterslides, and a rocky grotto, you won’t even care that this resort is located away from the beach.

While the pool is the main reason to stay here, we also can’t help but mention the on-site activities. There’s a putting green, volleyball court, fitness classes, lei making, ukulele lessons, art courses, and even s’mores nights!

Check out a video of our stay at the resort:

And as parents, you’ll love the spacious family-sized rooms, which are nearly twice as large as the standard hotel room on Kauai. The basic rooms come with Queen sleeper sofas, kitchenettes, and a washer and dryer unit, so you can enjoy the amenities of being at home without staying in a rented condo building. To accommodate more people, you can also book one of their 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom villas that come with full gourmet kitchens and private en-suite bathrooms.

Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu Features

Activities: Putting green, volleyball court, fitness classes, lei making, cultural classes, s’mores nights Kid’s Club: No Restaurants: Holoholo Grill (poolside grill with kid’s menu for 12 and under) and Gourmet Marketplace (shop selling snacks and groceries) Pools: Three pools – the award-winning main Lagoon Pool, the Family Lagoon Pool, and the adult-only Tranquility Pool. Nearby: The Shops at Kukui’ula (great restaurants and retail stores), Poipu Beach

best family resorts in Hawaii - Koloa Landing

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa – Kauai

The 5-star Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa really has something for every guest. It’s one of the largest resorts on the whole island, with sprawling gardens, a massive multi-level pool complex, and 5 on-site restaurants (plus a twice-weekly traditional luau).

Let’s start by talking about the pool, which is actually 3 distinct swimming areas and a separate saltwater lagoon. You can be as active or as inactive as you want (adults will love the private cabanas while kids can play on the waterslide or float in the lazy river). This is a key feature of the Grand Hyatt, as the beach next to the resort is very rocky with large swells that are better suited for surfing than swimming.

The resort has a packed itinerary of different daily activities, most of which are Hawaiian cultural classes like lei making or ukulele playing. For more adventure, kids between the ages of 3 and 12 can spend the day at Camp Hyatt, where they’ll play games, go to the park, or do arts and crafts.

Depending on how many people you’re traveling with, you can book a guestroom, connecting room, or one of the expansive suites (which range from 866 sq ft all the way up to 2,480 sq ft). Some even have walk-in closets, reading nooks, or wet bars.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa Features

Activities: Hawaiian cultural activities, hydroponic garden tours, spa, fitness center Kid’s Club: Yes, Camp Hyatt (for a fee) Restaurants: Tidepools (Hawaiian with kid’s menu), Stevenson’s Library (no kids menu), Ilima Terrace (casual eatery with kid’s menu), Seaview Terrace (coffee shop), Hale Nalu (poolside grill). Pools: Multi-level pool complex with waterslide and lazy river Nearby: Shipwreck Beach, Poipu Bay Golf Course

best family resorts in Hawaii - Grand Hyatt Kauai

Waipouli Beach Resort – Kauai

The Waipouli Beach Resort is part resort and part vacation rental with a pristine location on the golden shores of Waipouli Beach. And while this beach is great for watching the sunset or spotting turtles, it’s not the best option for swimming. But thankfully, the amazing pool more than makes up for that. The pool complex rivals that of most major hotel chains, with bubbling hot tubs, fun waterslides, and even cascading waterfalls.

As with most vacation rental properties, you’ll be booking a unit (1 or 2 bedrooms are available) that is privately owned. That means there may be some variance in consistency between the different apartments. Therefore, it’s important that you read reviews and look at the photos of the specific unit you want to rent. You may also choose to book directly with Marriott Homes & Villas, which also have rooms for rent on their site.

The benefit of staying at the Waipouli Beach Resort is that they come with equipped kitchenettes. Meaning you can cook meals (and save money) instead of eating out at restaurants every day. But if you need a break, there is a poolside bar that serves drinks and food throughout the day.

Finally, the resort has a fitness center and spa, but it doesn’t organize any on-site activities that you’d find at a more traditional resort. This can be a deal breaker for those with active kids, especially since the beach isn’t suitable for young swimmers.

Waipouli Beach Resort Features

Activities: Fitness studio, spa Kid’s Club: No Restaurants: Oasis Bar and Restaurant (poolside grill) Pools: 2-acre Fantasy Pool Nearby: Waipouli Beach, Waipouli Town Center

Here are some of the best places to visit in Hawaii for families:

1. Road to Hana

I had to start this list with one of my favorite places in Hawaii. The Road to Hana is way more about the journey than the destination.

On this famous winding road, you’ll see gorgeous gardens, beautiful waterfalls, and taste some of the best banana bread in Maui!

2. Diamond Head

If you look up from Waikiki Beach , you can’t miss Diamond Head. This iconic mountain is the backdrop of many Hawaiian postcards.

50. Merriman’s

And I have to end this list with the very best place to get a mai tai in Hawaii: Merriman’s .

My description won’t do it justice, but basically it’s an incredibly well-made mai tai that is topped with a lilikoi foam that takes it to the next level.

Mai Tai from Merriman's Hawaii

Thankfully, there are Merriman’s locations on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai. So, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to try one for yourself!

And they also serve them at their sister restaurant the Monkeypod Kitchen. There’s one conveniently across the street from Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa!

Want to make it at home? Try my amazing Hawaiian Mai Tai recipe !

15 Best Things to Do in Hawaii With Kids

Hawaii is a paradise for all ages.

`Ohana (family) is central to Hawaiian culture , and the islands are an incredibly family-friendly destination. Whether your keiki (children) are active, quiet, curious, bold, studious, creative, athletic, or otherwise, Hawaii has plenty to offer — on land and sea.

The rich history and culture, varied terrain, majestic views, tropical weather , abundant wildlife, and flavorful cuisine make this place a paradise for all ages. And the myriad ways to entertain and engage keiki means that a stay in Hawaii is heavenly for parents, too.

Here are 15 of the best things to do in Hawaii with kids.

Go stand-up paddleboarding with a pup.

How do you make surfing and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) even more fun? Add a furry friend. Guests of Turtle Bay Resort , located on Oahu's North Shore, can book a Surf or SUP With a Pup session. On the south side of the island, the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club in Waikiki is a great home base for those who want to stay and surf with their dogs — the hotel is pet-friendly and partners with SUPDog Hawaii to arrange SUP and surf lessons.

Live the cowboy life.

Hawaii has its own kind of cowboys, called paniolo, and travelers can learn about their history and lifestyle with a visit to a working ranch. On the Island of Hawaii, head to Kahua Ranch for an immersive experience that includes a Hawaiian "talk story," line dancing, roping demonstrations, a sunset barbecue, live music, and an evening around the campfire. On Maui , you'll find cowboy culture in Makawao and the surrounding upcountry area where you can book a horseback ride, or if you're visiting in July, experience the Makawao Rodeo, the largest paniolo competition in the state. On Oahu , reserve a table at the Paniolo Pā'ina for an evening of storytelling, hula, keiki activities, and a pig roast at the Turtle Bay Stables.

Eat your way around town.

There are so many ono (delicious) eats in Hawaii that it's hard to know where to start. Thankfully, you don't have to navigate it alone. Native Hawaiian chef and comedian Lanai Tabura guides guests on Aloha Plate Food Tours — the only Hawaiian food tour in the world — to local flavors while providing history and laughs along the way. Private bookings can be customized, so if there's something specific your keiki are craving, be sure to inquire when booking.

Experience the ocean after dark.

Stargaze and snorkel with manta rays on an Anelakai Adventures after-dark excursion off the Kona coast on the Island of Hawaii. All ocean activities with this Native Hawaiian-owned tour company are people-powered (no motors used), so participants can enjoy the quietude with stars above and manta rays, plankton, and other marine life below. Smaller children and those who prefer to stay in the boat are also welcome; you can catch a glimpse of the magical mantas and sea plankton right from your seat.

Learn how to hula.

Hula brings together important elements of Hawaiian culture, including dance, music, and storytelling, and it's a great way to get everybody moving. When booking a hotel, ask if they offer on-site hula lessons, like the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko'olina , where Native Hawaiian kumu hula (hula teacher) La'akea Perry offers an interactive workshop for ages five and up.

Try forest bathing.

Help your kids build comfort and confidence in the outdoors and develop a relationship with the natural world through forest bathing. The term forest bathing comes from the Japanese wellness practice of shinrin-yoku (immersing in the forest atmosphere). Forest Bathing Hawai'i founder and guide Phyllis Look leads participants through a series of sensory-based invitations in an outdoor setting, with the aim of connecting to the land and environment. Families can book a private, two-hour forest bathing session at Lyon Arboretum for kids five years old and up (accompanied by a guardian), or a private, three-hour hike and forest bathing at Camp Palehua for kids 12 and up (also accompanied by a guardian).

Paddle the Polynesian way.

Experience the ocean in an outrigger canoe. This traditional form of transportation used by the first Polynesians that arrived in Hawaii is still a significant part of Hawaiian culture today. Book an outrigger canoe tour at Ka'anapali Beach Hotel or Fairmont Kea Lani Maui (free of charge for guests of this property) and learn about the popular ocean sport and its history while paddling Maui's shoreline. Or, sign up for a paddling and snorkeling excursion through the Ka'aumoana program at the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko'olina — led by Native Hawaiian Nakoaokalani Prejean, a former navigator with the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Smaller groups (three or fewer people) can catch waves near Waikiki in a four-person outrigger with Kapakahi Tours . Keep an eye out for wildlife — you may spot sea turtles, fish, and whales on your ocean adventure.

Get crafty.

There are ample opportunities across the islands to learn a traditional craft from a local and take home your own souvenir. Create a keepsake with a master woodcarver at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach . At Grand Wailea Maui , kids can weave a lauhala bracelet or ti leaf lei and collect stamps for each cultural activity in their Grand Passport . Book a Hawaiian kapa-making workshop and design your own tote with kapa (bark cloth) practitioner Dalani Tanahy. Meanwhile, families staying at Kaimana Beach Hotel can join Native Hawaiian Kalei Scoggins every Tuesday and Thursday morning to try their hand at making traditional leis.

Catch your lunch or forage for dinner.

A local fisherman can teach guests how to throw a net for a fresh catch on the Four Seasons Resort Lanai Holoholo Island Tour . Or, join a Jungle Plant Foraging trip with Kauai Nature School and sample some of the Garden Island's bounty. If you're on Oahu, book a special culinary experience through The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach for a chance to spend the day immersed in farmlands, a taro patch, and an ancient Hawaiian fish pond at Kualoa Ranch before returning to the hotel for a private dinner featuring dishes created from the fresh produce, beef, and seafood highlighted during the excursion. This package is customizable based on guest preferences, so families can also partake in the cooking and ingredient sourcing if they choose to.

Enjoy snorkeling.

Hawaii is a paradise for ocean-loving keiki, and opportunities to snorkel are endless around the islands — from protected bays perfect for beginners to full-day excursions on the open ocean for more advanced swimmers. Beginners should look for an intro activity like the one offered at Fairmont Orchid on the Island of Hawaii, which includes the basics of snorkeling and ocean safety. Families with more experience can head out on a full-day adventure off the coast of Kauai (and the "Forbidden Island" of Niihau, if you opt for the Super Tour ) with Holo Holo Charters .

Sample some sweet treats.

Hawaii's tropical weather is ideal for growing fruit year-round, and these sweet treats make for tasty drinks and desserts. Start your day with a fresh fruit smoothie at The Sunrise Shack , a surfer favorite. Grab a post-snorkel shave ice made with organic fruit from Kula Shave Ice , or try Nicoco's vegan gelato (both dairy and gluten-free), handcrafted with seasonal and local ingredients like durian, pineapple, hibiscus, mango, and more. Or, book a candy-making class with Kuaiwi Farm and take a tour of the grounds (where cacao, coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapple, and other fruits and vegetables are grown), enjoy a chocolate tasting, and make your own sweet souvenir.

Take a hike.

Hawaii's diverse and scenic terrain offers hiking options for all ages. Families with children in strollers can enjoy coastal views (and whale watching November through March) from the paved Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail on Oahu. Iliau Nature Loop in Kauai affords Waimea Canyon views without tiring out little legs, and those more advanced (ages eight and up) can set out on a guided Hidden Craters hike on the slopes of Hualālai volcano with Hawaii Forest & Trail . Families with younger keiki (five years old and up) can also visit this sacred volcano and plant a koa tree on a combination — part 4x4, part hike — Hualālai Crater Experience led by Native Hawaiian Kimo Duarte. Opting for a locally led hike in Hawaii , rather than setting out on your own, creates a mutually beneficial experience: Tourism dollars go back into the local economy and visitors get the chance to learn about the historical, environmental, and cultural significance of the sacred lands they traverse.

Catch a wave.

Known for having some of the best swells and surf instructors in the world, Hawaii is the place to catch your first wave. Look for family-friendly surf schools, like Faith Surf School and North Shore Surf Girls , that tailor lessons to your child's skill level. Private lessons geared toward families such as Kauai Surf Schools' Da Ohana three-day clinic are also a great opportunity for the whole brood to ride waves together.

Malama Hawaii.

Get your whole crew involved in a Malama Hawaii give-back activity and help malama (or care for) this piece of paradise. Discounted hotel packages paired with voluntourism experiences, like a tree-planting initiative with 'Alohilani Resort , beach cleanup kits provided by Koa Kea Hotel & Resort , an immersive eco-cultural experience in partnership with Outrigger Hotels and Kualoa Ranch, and more, are available in multiple locations across Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Island of Hawaii. Here are more tips on how to be a responsible traveler in Hawaii .

Have some fun for free.

While many popular activities in Hawaii come with a high price tag, there are also plenty of experiences that won't cost you a dime. Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea , for example, offers a daily Kids for All Seasons camp free of charge, and it includes outdoor games, swimming, and arts and crafts. Meanwhile, the Fairmont Orchid has a range of complimentary activities such as hula, Hawaiian language lessons, mo'olelo (storytelling), and traditional Hawaiian games. Aston Waikiki Beach Tower and Aston Ka'anapali Shores invite guests of all ages to give the ukulele a try during complimentary one-hour lessons. And those staying at Outrigger Waikiki , Outrigger Reef , and Waikiki Beachcomber receive free admission for up to four guests at the Honolulu Museum of Art, as well as one free children's admission ticket when purchasing an adult ticket at Waikiki Aquarium and Bishop Museum (where kids can join outdoor activities such as scavenger hunts and Native Hawaiian games). When choosing a hotel, be sure to ask about complimentary kid-friendly activities.

Caleb Hayes

Hawaii is known for active volcanoes, jaw-dropping natural beauty, and stunning unique beaches.

With endless things to see and do, finding an all-inclusive resort to accommodate your family and lessen expenses is crucial.

But unlike other vacation destinations, The Aloha State has limited options for true all-inclusive (AI) resorts in Hawaii.

Still, you can find alternatives that offer great all inclusive Hawaii packages and other deals like daily resort credits.

As an experienced traveler, I’ve visited and learned many things about various AI resorts in the Paradise of the Pacific.

I’ve also researched to ensure my information and recommendations are authentic and up-to-date.

I combined my personal experiences and extensive research to curate this list of the state’s top AI resorts.

If you’re looking for an all inclusive Hawaii resort experience that’s kid-friendly, you’ll love Travaasa Hana in Maui.

In addition to your room, food, and other amenities, the A.I. package also comes with a nice credit to use around the resort.

Some things will cost extra, but the credit helps a lot.

Hana-Maui Resort also offers a la carte options, so a bit of quick math and planning ahead will help you decide which is more economical for your family.

Either way, you’ll love the pools, the beach, and all of the fun at this number 1 rated boutique hotel and resort with oceanfront bungalows.

Royal Kona Resort doesn’t have a fully inclusive package, but it’s not too far off.

Their semi-inclusive gives you a lower rate on the room, and their oceanfront rooms are definitely worth it.

Breakfast is included, and so are some special events like a dinner cruise and other family friendly things to do.

Also, you can’t really call it a Hawaiian vacation without experiencing their Lu’au, can you?

You’ll want to budget a little extra for lunches and dinners, but they can easily add kids into the package for you, even though it’s advertised as being for two adults.

3. Royal Lahaina Resort – Maui

  • Breathtaking scenery
  • Easy beach access
  • Dated facilities

The Royal Lahaina all inclusive Hawaii resort is an excellent place to consider if you’re staying for five nights or longer, as they offer a special Royal Experience for longer stays.

This special bonus includes free breakfasts, a sunset cruise, a luau experience, and you can save a bit of money on a room that’s right on the ocean.

The beach cottages are a great way to get some privacy for your family, while still enjoying all the benefits of a pristine, luxuriously, and fully-stocked resort.

They also have tower-suites available if you’d rather save more of your budget to enjoy everything that this property has to offer.

Choices for an all inclusive Hawaii resort package are limited, but even if there were tons of other options, this one would still be among the best.

4. Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa – Oahu

Disney Aulani Resort

92-1185 Aliinui Dr Kapolei, HI 96707 (866) 443-4763 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

With its luxurious amenities and action-packed activities, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa is an excellent alternative to Royal Kona and Royal Lahaina Resort.

It goes without saying that Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Oahu, will have an incredible amount of fun and activities for kids to enjoy.

Meet-and-greets with Disney characters are just the beginning.

There’s a water park with pool parties for young ones, a club for kids to play and meet friends, and a lot more that’s all included complimentary.

You can build your own (nearly) all-inclusive packages to suit your families needs, which can work out to be more affordable than places that offer a one-size-fits-all package.

The rooms are gorgeous and fun, and there are villas that can be rented for larger groups with extra incentives, too.

It’s a 5 star resort experience with a Disney touch!

5. Grand Wailea – Maui

Grand Wailea Resort Hotel And Spa Waldorf Astoria

3850 Wailea Alanui Dr Wailea, HI 96753 (808) 875-1234 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

From the moment you first step foot on this property, Grand Wailea in Maui is just stunning.

It’s great for families because teens and kids under 17 stay for free.

They don’t have any traditional all-inclusive packages that include everything, but you can find packages with free nights and generous daily allowances in resort credits, so it works out quite similarly in the end.

The pools here really set this place apart.

They have a number of water slides, a rope swing, a lazy-river, and a lot more.

There’s even a “volcano” with an elevator inside.

Younger travelers love spending time at Camp Grande, a massive section of this resort that’s all about playing and having fun.

There’s even a little movie theater, activities for children aged five to twelve, and different activities for teenagers.

6. Sheraton Waikiki

Sheraton Waikiki

The Sheraton Waikiki is another big resort that doesn’t have a classic all-inclusive package available, but once again, there can be some benefits to that.

When guests are only paying for what they want/use, and the resort doesn’t have to increase their all-inclusive rates to make up for guests who will over-indulge, they can sometimes offer a higher level of dining.

Also, you don’t have to worry about having to deal with any guests that have gone way overboard on all-inclusive drinks.

Just a few things to keep in mind.

We still love A.I. packages, but they aren’t always the be-all and the end-all.

What this Waikiki family resort does offer is an incredible breakfast and four distinct places to eat and indulge.

There are over 1500 rooms in this massive-capacity resort but you still feel that personal touch.

7. Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

Four Seasons Resort Maui At Wailea

3900 Wailea Alanui Dr Kihei, HI 96753 (808) 874-8000 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

Let’s wrap up this list with the stunningly gorgeous Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea .

The views from the infinity pool, or frankly anywhere on this property, are just breathtaking.

It’s one of the sunniest places on earth, and the service ties it all together.

While they don’t have an A.I. package, they do offer some very generous nightly resort credits, which works out about the same or even cheaper for you in many cases.

The bright and sunny rooms include suites with multiple bedrooms, oceanfront views, and other options depending on who you’re travelling with and how much space you need.

Each of the restaurants, bars, and lounges on this property are unique enough that you’d never even guess they were at the same resort.

Still, they all carry the same level of luxury and attention to detail.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing resorts: which one is right for you.

Before deciding where to stay in Hawaii, compare various resorts .

Consider factors such as the location, amenities, accommodations, and featured experiences to give you an idea.

Based on that, pick the place that fits your family’s needs, preferences, and budget.

Hana Maui Resort provides a calm retreat with a scenic landscape and tropical views, ideal for those who like to escape city life.

But most suites have no air conditioning, and upgrading to rooms that have one can be expensive.

Despite its aging facilities, Royal Kona Resort offers spectacular oceanfront views from your accommodation.

You will also have the chance to explore the best Hawaiian attractions, like Luau, seahorse farms, volcanoes national park, and helicopter tours.

Meanwhile, Royal Lahaina Resort lets you enjoy outstanding natural landscapes and sunset views.

Its facilities may start to show wear, but its first-rate services and easy beach access can compensate for that.

For a more fun-packed resort for all ages, you can visit Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, as an alternative to Royal Lahaina Resort.

Although pricey, its well-appointed villas, entertaining activities, and unique experiences can make it worthwhile.

How I Picked The Resorts

We’re a big family who have a soft heart for Hawaii.

And we always look for all-inclusive resorts to accommodate our family whenever we visit The Aloha State.

Moreover, I talked to locals and fellow parents about their experiences and recommendations during our visits.

In addition to that, I’ve gathered information through several reputable review sites to ensure an unbiased evaluation.

Our Resort Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Kid-friendly Activities: I use this to evaluate the availability and variety of family-friendly amenities at every resort. Does it feature water parks, playgrounds, and kids’ clubs? Does the resort organize events designed specifically for kids? I ask myself these questions whenever I rate this resort’s kid-friendly activities.
  • Family Accommodations: This is used to assess the family accommodations of the resort. Are the rooms spacious? Does it offer family suites with connecting rooms? Can it accommodate families of different sizes? Is there a crib or baby-proofing in every room? These questions are essential whenever I rate the resort’s family accommodations.
  • Dining Options: This evaluates the dining options at the resort. Are there kid-friendly menus or buffet-style dining at the resort? Can the on-site restaurants cater to everyone’s dietary preferences and needs? I use these questions to assess the dining options of every property.
  • Safety and Security: I use this criterion to assess the safety and security of the resorts. Are there lifeguards at the swimming pools? Are the premises secured? Is the staff trained to handle any emergency? I consider these factors when rating the property’s safety and security.
  • Value for Money: This is used to evaluate the value of money provided by the resort. Are the room rates reasonable? Are the services, activities, and amenities suitable for the price? I ask myself these questions to rate the value for money provided by the resort.
  • Location and Accessibility: This measures how accessible the resort is for families. How far is it from the popular family attractions? Is it easily accessible via public transportation? Does the resort offer airport transfers? These are the questions I ask myself when evaluating the property’s location and accessibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does all-inclusive mean in hawaii.

In Hawaii, all-inclusive typically refers to a vacation package or resort offering that includes accommodations, meals, and select amenities in a single price, allowing guests to enjoy a range of services without additional costs. However, it’s important to note that the concept of all-inclusive resorts is not as prevalent in Hawaii as it is in some other tourist destinations.

Are There Cheap All-Inclusive Hawaii Vacation Packages?

Yes. You can avail cheap all-inclusive Hawaii vacation packages from resorts like Royal Lahaina Resort, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, and Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort.

family trip hawaii

Every all inclusive Hawaii resort has its own unique features, but all of them can make the most of your time in this awe-inspiring destination.

Royal Kona Resort ensured we had everything my family and I needed for a comfortable stay on The Big Island, from cozy beds to delectable local, Asian, and European cuisines to interactive resort and outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, Royal Lahaina Resort allowed us to interact and swim with sea turtles, learn the art of Hula, and experience a remarkable Luau.

We were never disappointed with Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, thanks to its many kid-friendly activities, magical shows, exciting entertainment, and relaxing excursions.

But Hana-Maui Resort is my favorite among the pack.

It has the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement.

Our oceanfront bungalow, surrounded by lush trees, was spacious and had kitchens, which made us feel at home.

Since there were no TVs in our accommodation, it made my children appreciate quality time with each other and the beauty of being one with nature.

Unforgettable Memories: Planning the Perfect Family Trip to Hawaii

Variety of Experiences

Hawaii offers a wide array of experiences, from exhilarating outdoor adventures to immersive cultural experiences, ensuring a memorable family trip. This variety makes Hawaii a unique vacation spot, catering to everyone’s tastes in the family.

Rich Culture and History

Stepping into Hawaii is like opening a vibrant, dynamic book of history and culture. The Hawaiian culture, deeply rooted in its Polynesian heritage, is brought to life through its people, traditions, language, music, and art.

One can’t speak of Hawaiian culture without mentioning the enchanting hula dance, a storytelling tool that weaves tales of gods, legends, and history through graceful movements.

Luau parties, another highlight, aren’t just about delicious feasts; they’re also an opportunity for families to enjoy traditional Hawaiian music, hula dances, and learn about ancient Hawaiian customs and crafts.

Then there’s the Hawaiian language, a cornerstone of the culture. While English is widely spoken, the Hawaiian language still holds a special place in people’s hearts.

Words like ‘ohana (family) and ‘aina (land) reveal how Hawaiians value family ties and nature – beautiful lessons to impart to your children during the trip!

The islands are also dotted with historical landmarks.

For instance, the Iolani Palace in Honolulu, the only royal palace in the United States, and the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, once a place of refuge for lawbreakers in ancient times, are windows into the region’s intriguing past.

By diving into Hawaii’s rich culture and history during your trip, you aren’t merely visiting a destination; you’re living a story, walking through history, and becoming a part of a heritage that’s as profound as the Pacific itself.

Isn’t that the kind of vacation that remains etched in memory long after it’s over?

Natural Beauty and Adventure

When you think of a family trip to Hawaii, it’s impossible not to imagine its stunning natural beauty. It’s a veritable playground for outdoor lovers, with each island offering a unique backdrop for unforgettable adventures.

Hawaii’s stunning beaches are a highlight. There’s something magical about the shores, with sands that range from white to black, green, and even red.

Whether it’s the famous Waikiki Beach on Oahu, the striking black sand beaches at Punalu’u on the Big Island, or the lesser-known Papakolea Green Sand Beach, Hawaii’s beaches are diverse and exciting.

And let’s not forget the wide array of water activities for the family: snorkeling , surfing, paddleboarding , or simply building sandcastles with the little ones!

However, Hawaii’s beauty extends beyond its stunning shorelines. The islands boast diverse landscapes, ranging from lush rainforests and waterfalls to dramatic cliffs and active volcanoes.

Ever imagined hiking through a bamboo forest to reach a cascading waterfall? How about a thrilling helicopter tour over an active volcano?

Plan Your Hawaiian Adventure Today

Camper Vans  | Surf Boards | Kayaks | Snorkel Gear | Itineraries | Campsites | More…

Or perhaps exploring the vibrant underwater world with a snorkel ? In Hawaii, these aren’t just dreams, but realities waiting to be lived!

Then there’s Hawaii’s wildlife. Your family might meet a Hawaiian monk seal lazing on the beach, spot a humpback whale breaching in the distance, or discover the colorful tropical fish while snorkeling.

And let’s not forget the birds. Hawaii is home to a fascinating variety of bird species, many of which can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

To put it simply, a family vacation in Hawaii is an unparalleled opportunity to witness the majesty of nature and the thrill of adventure.

It’s a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the natural world. And isn’t that what the best family vacations are made of?

Choosing the Right Time for a Hawaii Family Vacation

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from years of traveling, it’s this – timing can make or break a trip.

Especially when it comes to a place like Hawaii, where each season paints the islands in different hues.

Weather and Peak Season

Hawaii, the Pacific’s paradise, is blessed with a warm, tropical climate all year round, making it a fantastic destination no matter when you decide to go.

The average temperatures hover between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (24 to 29 degrees Celsius), providing a balmy backdrop for any activity you have in mind.

However, the beauty of the islands does not go unnoticed, and Hawaii can be quite busy during the peak seasons. The busiest times are generally during the winter months (mid-December to mid-April), when visitors from colder climates flock to the islands for some sun and warmth.

Summer (June to August) also sees a surge of families traveling during the school vacation. During these times, popular attractions can get crowded, and prices for flights and accommodations can be higher.

For a more relaxed, crowd-free, and potentially budget-friendly Hawaii family vacation, consider planning your visit during the shoulder seasons – spring (April to June) and fall (September to mid-December).

During these months, the weather is still pleasant, the crowds thinner, and the prices can be more reasonable.

Spring in Hawaii is a time of renewal, where you’ll witness the islands in full bloom and can partake in cultural events like the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula.

In the fall, the weather cools slightly, providing perfect conditions for hiking and exploring. The Aloha Festivals, Hawaii’s premier cultural event that celebrates music, dance, and history, also takes place in September, adding a festive flair to your family vacation.

After all, the best time for a Hawaii family vacation largely depends on your family’s preferences and flexibility. Whether you crave the buzz of the peak seasons or the tranquility of the shoulder seasons, Hawaii is bound to deliver an unforgettable experience.

Remember, there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit Hawaii – it’s always aloha time!

Best Hawaiian Islands for Family Trips

The beauty of planning a family trip to Hawaii is the freedom to choose from various islands, each offering a unique flavor of the Aloha spirit.

From the cosmopolitan charm of Oahu to the untamed landscapes of the Big Island, there’s an island for every family’s preference.

Oahu: The Gathering Place

Oahu, aptly nicknamed “The Gathering Place,” is often the first stop for families. It’s where the state’s capital, Honolulu, is located and is home to the world-renowned Waikiki Beach.

Here, the modern meets the traditional, offering an exciting mix of experiences. You can visit the historic Pearl Harbor, hike the Diamond Head Crater for a breathtaking view of the Honolulu skyline, or simply soak up the sun at Waikiki.

The island also boasts a bustling food and art scene, with numerous family-friendly restaurants and galleries.

Maui: The Valley Isle

If you’re seeking a balance between relaxation and adventure, Maui, “The Valley Isle,” is your answer. Maui is famous for its beautiful beaches, the historic town of Lahaina, the scenic Road to Hana, and the sunrise at Haleakala National Park.

Plus, between November and May, it becomes one of the best places in the world to watch humpback whales.

From the luxury resorts of Kaanapali to the laid-back vibes of Kihei, Maui offers a versatile family vacation experience.

Kauai: The Garden Isle

For families who love nature and adventure, Kauai, “The Garden Isle,” is a dream come true. This island is lush, wild, and relatively less crowded.

It offers stunning hikes, including the famed Napali Coast trail, countless waterfalls, and beautiful beaches.

The Waimea Canyon, often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” is a must-visit for its awe-inspiring views.

Hawaii: The Big Island

Lastly, the Big Island, named Hawaii like the state itself, is for families who crave diversity.

It’s the youngest and the biggest island, offering an impressive array of landscapes – from snow-capped mountains and active volcanoes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to lush rainforests and black sand beaches.

The Big Island is also a great place to learn about ancient Hawaiian culture, with sites like the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park.

In essence, no matter which island (or islands) you choose for your Hawaii family vacation, each one promises a unique blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and the quintessential Aloha spirit.

After all, isn’t variety the spice of life (and vacations)?

Family Wildlife and Nature Parks

Hawaii’s breathtaking beauty extends far beyond its idyllic beaches. From lush rainforests and active volcanoes to rich marine life, the islands are a treasure trove of natural wonders and diverse wildlife.

And the best part? Many of these sites are easily accessible and offer memorable experiences for the entire family.

Experience Rich Biodiversity

The islands of Hawaii are home to several unique species, both on land and in the water.

In the lush rainforests, you may spot colorful native birds, like the Nene (Hawaiian Goose), the state bird of Hawaii, or the elusive Hawaiian Monk Seal, one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world, sunning on remote beaches.

Underwater, the spectacle is even more remarkable. Hawaii’s clear waters are teeming with marine life, including sea turtles, dolphins, and a rainbow of tropical fish.

And don’t forget the humpback whales – if you visit between November and May, you’ll have the chance to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Explore Stunning Nature Parks

Hawaii’s nature parks are family-friendly and full of diverse landscapes. Here are a few must-visit locations:

  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Big Island: This park offers a rare opportunity to see an active volcano up close. The park has several hiking trails suitable for families and offers ranger-led programs that educate about the park’s geology and ecology.
  • Haleakala National Park, Maui: Known for its stunning sunrise views, this park is also home to a dormant volcano, endangered Hawaiian Geese (Nene), and unique vegetation. Don’t forget to explore the Pipiwai Trail, a family-friendly hike that leads to a beautiful bamboo forest and the 400-foot Waimoku Falls.
  • Waimea Valley, Oahu: This botanical garden in the heart of Oahu is a great place to learn about Hawaii’s unique flora and fauna. A leisurely hike through the valley leads to a waterfall where you can take a refreshing swim.
  • Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, Kauai: Accessible only by foot, boat, or helicopter, this park offers some of the most stunning views in Hawaii. Families can enjoy a boat tour along the coast, spotting waterfalls, sea caves, and possibly even dolphins along the way!

The wildlife and nature parks in Hawaii offer families a unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the islands’ unique ecosystems.

With an array of landscapes to explore and wildlife to encounter, these experiences will undoubtedly become a highlight of your Hawaii family vacation.

Are you ready to answer the call of the wild?

Here are some recommended experiences for your family trip:

Immerse Yourself in Hawaiian Traditions

  • Take Hula and Ukulele Lessons: Learn how to sway your hips to the rhythm of Hawaiian music or strum a tune on the ukulele. Many resorts and cultural centers offer classes suitable for all ages.
  • Try Traditional Hawaiian Foods: Sampling local cuisine is a delicious way to experience Hawaiian culture. Don’t miss out on trying dishes like kalua pig, poi, and poke. We are going to expand this subject later.

Explore Historic Sites

  • Visit Iolani Palace, Oahu: The Iolani Palace in Honolulu offers a fascinating insight into the Hawaiian monarchy’s history. Guided tours provide an in-depth look at the palace’s architectural beauty and historical significance.
  • Tour Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, Big Island: This ancient site provides a glimpse into traditional Hawaiian society and laws. Walking around the park, you’ll see recreated thatched buildings, carved wooden statues, and more.
  • Explore the Bishop Museum, Oahu: The Bishop Museum holds the world’s most extensive collection of Hawaiian and Pacific artifacts, making it an invaluable resource for those interested in Polynesian cultures.

Participate in Local Festivals

  • Experience the Merrie Monarch Festival, Hilo: This week-long celebration of hula is one of Hawaii’s most significant cultural events. Although it’s highly competitive, the festival also includes exhibitions, demonstrations, and performances open to the public.
  • Join the Aloha Festivals, Statewide: These annual celebrations take place on every island and feature music, dance, parades, and more. They offer an excellent way for families to experience the diverse cultures of Hawaii.

By engaging in these cultural experiences, you’re not merely observing Hawaii’s culture; you’re becoming a part of it.

Family Dining in Hawaii – A Culinary Adventure

Hawaii offers an exciting culinary scene that reflects the islands’ rich cultural diversity. From traditional Hawaiian fare to the fusion cuisine known as Hawaii Regional Cuisine, food is an integral part of the Hawaiian experience.

Trying the local Hawaiian cuisine should be high on your family trip’s to-do list.

Savor Traditional Hawaiian Foods

Traditional Hawaiian cuisine is a feast for the senses, featuring dishes that have been enjoyed on the islands for centuries.

Here are some you shouldn’t miss:

  • Poi: A starchy dish made from taro root. It’s often served as a side dish and has a unique, slightly sweet flavor.
  • Kalua Pig: Traditionally cooked in an underground oven called an imu, this dish is a staple at Hawaiian luaus. The slow-cooking process results in incredibly tender and flavorful pork.
  • Lau Lau: A dish made of pork, fish, or chicken wrapped in taro leaves and then in ti leaves, and typically steamed or baked.
  • Poke: A raw fish salad usually featuring ahi (tuna), soy sauce, green onions, and sesame oil, among other ingredients. It’s fresh, flavorful, and can be found almost everywhere on the islands.

Try Hawaii Regional Cuisine

In the 1990s, a group of twelve chefs created Hawaii Regional Cuisine, a culinary movement that fused local ingredients with global cooking techniques.

Today, this style of cooking is showcased in many restaurants across the islands. For a taste of this innovative cuisine, consider dining at restaurants such as Chef Mavro in Honolulu, Merriman’s in Waimea, or Mama’s Fish House in Maui.

Enjoy Local Treats and Snacks

Don’t forget about Hawaii’s sweet treats and snacks! Be sure to try shave ice, a local favorite similar to snow cones, and malasadas, delicious Portuguese donuts.

For a quick snack, grab some Spam musubi, a sushi-style snack featuring Spam on a block of rice, wrapped with nori.

In conclusion, dining in Hawaii is truly a culinary adventure. With its unique blend of flavors and styles, the islands’ food scene provides an opportunity to explore Hawaii’s culture through its cuisine.

So, are you ready to take your taste buds on a Hawaiian journey?

As you savor the delicious flavors of Hawaii, consider how you’d like to experience everything else the islands have to offer.

One of the most convenient and worry-free ways to enjoy your Hawaii family vacation is by choosing an all-inclusive package.

Let’s dive into what these packages are all about.

All-Inclusive Hawaii Family Vacation Packages

Choosing an all-inclusive package for your Hawaii family vacation can help you manage your budget while ensuring a stress-free and fun-filled vacation.

These packages typically bundle accommodations, meals, activities, and sometimes even airfare, providing a one-stop solution for your vacation planning.

The Perks of All-Inclusive Packages

Opting for an all-inclusive package has several advantages:

  • Budget Management: With most costs covered upfront, it’s easier to manage your budget. You won’t need to worry about daily meal expenses or activity fees adding up.
  • Convenience: All-inclusive packages save you time and effort as they take care of most aspects of your trip, from accommodation to entertainment.
  • Variety of Choices: These packages often include a wide range of activities, so you can enjoy different experiences without the stress of planning and booking each separately.
  • Dining Options: All-inclusive usually means most or all meals are covered, allowing you to enjoy a variety of local and international cuisine at your resort.

Top Picks for All-Inclusive Family Packages

While Hawaii doesn’t have a lot of traditional all-inclusive resorts, several hotels offer packages that include meals, activities, and other extras.

Here are a couple of top picks:

  • Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, Oahu: This family-friendly resort offers packages that include meals, kids club activities, and access to the resort’s many amenities. Plus, the Disney magic adds an extra layer of fun for kids.
  • Travaasa Hana, Maui: Known for its beautiful location in Hana, Travaasa offers an inclusive package that features meals, a daily resort credit for spa treatments or activities, and various cultural and adventure experiences.

Alternatives to All-Inclusive Packages

If you prefer more flexibility, there are alternatives to all-inclusive packages:

  • Vacation Rentals: Renting a condo or house can be more cost-effective for families. You’ll have more space, along with amenities like a full kitchen, which can help save on meal costs.
  • Plan Your Own Itinerary: Booking accommodations, activities, and meals separately allows you to tailor your trip to your family’s specific interests and needs.
  • Book your camper van : With a camper van rental, you and your family can travel around the islands at your own pace and experience the beautiful scenery and outdoor activities Hawaii has to offer.

In conclusion, whether you opt for an all-inclusive package or choose to plan each part of your trip separately, the most important thing is to enjoy the quality time with your family and create lasting memories in the beautiful islands of Hawaii.

The Ultimate Guide to Hawaii’s Big Island with Kids

By: Author Leslie Harvey

Posted on Published: August 26, 2022

Share this!:

While many families flock to O’ahu or Maui on their Hawaiian vacation, savvy family travelers know that the lower key vibe of Hawaii’s Big Island can offer just the R&R they seek. My husband’s family has been vacationing on the Big Island of Hawaii on the Kohala Coast since he was a child. When I joined the family over 18 years ago, it quickly became the Hawaiian island destination I visited most.

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Mauna Lani Fishponds

After several weeks spent vacationing on the Big Island with kids (and many more trips before that), I decided it’s long overdue for me to share nearly two decades worth of knowledge about this magnificent island destination with Trips With Tykes readers!

Here are all the essentials you need to know when planning a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii with kids – from things to do to where to stay, with lots of tips in between.

(Trips With Tykes uses affiliate links which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through links in this post. See our full disclosure policy linked in the menu at the bottom of this site.)

Flying to Hawaii’s Big Island

Unlike Oahu and Maui, the Big Island can be a Hawaiian destination that can be a bit harder to reach, especially for East Coasters. Every time we have been, Californians and other West Coasters seem to make up the majority of the fellow visitors we come across. With non-stop flights from every major California airport and West Coast cities like SEA and PDX, this is no surprise. There are no non-stops from even Chicago or New York airports, so travelers from the rest of the country are going to need to connect somewhere to get to the Big Island. But I promise that a connection is well worth it.

There are two commercial airports on the Big Island. Visitors from the mainland will almost always arrive into Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA or often just “Kona Airport”). The other airport, Hilo International (ITO) is served by inter-island flights only at the moment. KOA is served from the United States by United, American, Alaska, Hawaiian, Delta, and Southwest (see more about Southwest Airlines Hawaii flights ).

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Kona Airport Open Air

KOA is an open air airport and the weather is quite warm year round. I recommend dressing in layers on your flight so you can switch into your island attire and be comfortable upon landing.

All the major car rental companies are accessible via shuttle service and very close by. Weekly car rentals at KOA used to be fairly inexpensive, but 2021-2022 car shortages have at least temporarily raised prices for now. My family uses Autoslash to look for deals, but often find great rates with Costco Travel, which enables us to have an additional driver included at no extra cost (and for those of you who have kids of car seat age, remember the free car seat AAA membership benefit with Hertz !).

Uber or Lyft were only allowed to operate at KOA for pickups as of February 1, 2019. Ridesharing vehicles are slowly becoming more common on the Big Island, but the long distances between sights and high prices don’t necessarily make this a viable or reliable ground transportation option. You should likely plan on using a cab or pre-booked hotel shuttle if you don’t rent a car.

Big Island Geography & Basics

The Big Island is the newest of the Hawaiian islands, with much more ongoing volcanic activity and lots of newer lava flows. Flying into KOA, you’ll spot little but black rock. Many a visitor’s hopes and dreams of a vacation on a lush tropical island have been dashed by this first look. Even the drive away from the airport looks barren. But never fear. The resorts are tropical oases in a sea of black lava that make for an especially intriguing contrast.

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Landing at KOA Kona Airport

As its name makes obvious, the Big Island is indeed larger than the other islands of Hawaii. That means you’ll need more time to see it all if that is your goal. Most visitors pick one side of the island – Kona or Hilo – and focus their activities there. Travelers from the mainland tend to spend the most time on the western (Kona/Kohala) side of the island where the major resorts are located. To drive from the resorts on the Kohala Coast to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, for example, will take well over two hours. Roads can be winding, so day trippers should be prepared and realistic about drive times.

What family travelers will love about the Big Island is the reliable weather, at least on the Kona and Kohala side. That area gets very little rainfall, so you can count on blue skies and beach days for nearly every day of your vacation. High temperatures are usually in the low 80s year round, with the evening lows around 70.

Where to Stay on the Big Island: The Best Big Island Hotels for Families

Family travelers to the Big Island will find no shortage of magnificent hotel properties. Hawaii is certainly more expensive than many travel destinations, but there are still quality resorts for more moderate budgets as well. And for luxury travelers, the options are quite extensive. Here are the hotels that work best for families on the Big Island:

Visiting the Big Island of Hawaii with kids? Explore the very best in hotels, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly lodging on the Kohala Coast and beyond. Plus, things to do and tips for a Big Island vacation.

1. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai

As one of the Four Seasons’ flagship properties (and the most expensive hotel on the Big Island, at least until the Mauna Lani started giving it a run for that title), this is an obvious hotel choice for luxury loving family travelers. The Four Seasons signature service abounds, and families will love that a kids club for children ages 5-12 is included in the price. The hotel’s location is more convenient for airport access and activities in and around the village of Kailua-Kona as well. The resort is known more for its pools than its beach, so it may not fit the bill as well if you prefer to spend more of your time on the sand and in the surf.

2. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Mauna Kea Beach from Above

This is the hotel for luxury seekers who appreciate a hotel with history. The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is one of the the original “Rock Resorts” founded by Laurance Rockefeller in the mid-1960s. It is located on one of the Big Island’s best beaches which is highly swimmable for families.

The Mauna Kea is a Marriott Autograph Collection property, so points-loving travelers can earn and spend a valuable loyalty currency here. My brother-in-law was married here a few years ago and we returned the following year for another week’s vacation, so my family can recommend it highly from lots of personal experience.

3. Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Mauna Lani Bay Hotel

Located in the middle of King Kamehameha’s royal fish ponds, the setting of this hotel is dramatic. This was the Big Island hotel my family stayed at most when it was the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows. It has now reopened as an Auberge resort under new ownership as of 2020.

This renovation brought some much needed updates to the property but the result of the major refresh was much increased prices, so budget accordingly. The resort now features kids programming for ages 5-12 with the Holoholo Kids Crew and has a keiki pool and surf shack with family-friendly water activities on offer.

4. Hilton Waikoloa Village

Waikoloa has the most hustle and bustle of any area of the Big Island (but not too much), so I always recommend this area highly for families who like to stay busy. The Hilton Waikoloa Village is the largest property in the area, featuring three pools with waterfalls, a 175 foot waterslide, an on-site luau, a swim with the dolphins experience, and lots of shopping. Transportation-loving kids will adore the canal boats and trams that serve the practical function of getting you around the large resort but are also an activity unto themselves. While the hotel no longer has a kids club, there are kids pool activities and a number of family-friendly cultural activities offered.

5. Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Waikoloa Marriott

For families who still want to be in the center of things at Waikoloa but perhaps at a smaller and more low key property, the Marriott fits the bill. The hotel has a number of “Ohana Room” categories which give families staying in a room together extra space for not much of an additional upcharge over standard room rates. The hotel has a gorgeous network of pools as well as a luau on site that families will enjoy.

6. Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel

Family travelers on a stricter budget may find King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel the perfect fit. This hotel has historically been a popular choice for locals taking a staycation. While rooms everywhere in Hawaii have skyrocketed in price the last few years, this hotel still presents value with some rates as low as in the $300s. The hotel can also be a solid value when redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points.

Located in the village of Kailua-Kona, it’s close to many of the activities that family travelers will want to do. With a luau, spa, and multiple restaurants, its onsite amenities far exceed many other hotels in this price range. Plus, it just was fully renovated.

What to Do on the Big Island with Kids

There are so many things to do on Hawaii’s Big Island that it has taken us numerous trips to even begin to do many of the things on this list. You’ll want to spend a lot of your time enjoying your resort’s beaches, pools, and other amenities, so don’t over-schedule yourself. The whole point of going to the Big Island is to escape the hustle and bustle!

11 best things to do on Hawaii's Big Island for families. From volcanoes to beaches to luaus, find out what to do with kids on the Big Island. Plus tips and hotel recommendations for your Hawaiian vacation.

But I’d also recommend doing more than just staying at your resort. Here are our family’s favorite things to do on Hawaii’s Big Island with kids:

1. Attend a Luau

Luaus are a must-do on any Hawaiian vacation, even if they can sometimes be a tad touristy. The food and drinks are always plentiful and kids always seem to enjoy the show. I can personally recommend the Sunset Luau at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa as well as the luau at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort .

Others include the Legends of Hawaii Luau at the Hilton Waikoloa Village , the Island Breeze Luau at the Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel , and the Voyagers of the Pacific Luau at the Royal Kona Resort .

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Waikoloa Marriott Luau

Most luaus do not run nightly, so be certain to compare schedules of the offerings near you before your trip. For families with younger children, check the age at which the luau begins charging admission. Some have a slightly higher age cutoff and may save you a bundle if your young kids are still free. And whatever you do, be sure to book well in advance of your trip. Luaus are booking up many weeks and even months in advance these days.

2. Snorkel with Manta Rays

There are a couple of coves near the village of Kailua-Kona that serve as feeding spots for giant manta rays at night. Families with kids old enough to be comfortable snorkeling in the ocean at night (likely school age and above) should book an excursion to swim with them. SCUBA divers dive to the bottom and shine lights up at the snorkelers to attract the plankton that mantas feed on.  Snorkeling with manta rays is truly one of the most memorable adventures the Big Island has to offer. I can personally recommend Kona Honu Divers highly for this excursion for divers and snorkelers alike.

See more places to snorkel on the Big Island if this activity is a family favorite.

3. Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Visitors have flocked for years to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see an active volcano in action. There was an eruption in 2018, and the result was that lava disappeared from the park for quite some time. As of September 2021, the lava flows have returned and are visible again (as of the date of re-publication of this post).

Since the lava is fickle and conditions can change rapidly, don’t get your hopes up too far in advance of your trip about being able to see it. But regardless of the conditions of the moment, know that there are still magnificent hiking trails and lots for your kids to learn within this park.

4. Take a Helicopter Ride

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tour

Taking a ride in a helicopter is a pricey excursion, but the views make it well worth the splurge. Take a tour that takes you within view of the volcano as well as the island’s many waterfalls. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters sets the gold standard for these tours and has a location right near the Waikoloa area resorts that is highly accessible to all Kohala Coast visitors.

5. Visit Akaka Falls

The Big Island has no shortage of breathtaking waterfalls, but most of them are on the remote north coast only really visible in a helicopter. Akaka Falls is one of the only ones that is easily accessible for hikers. Just 10 miles from Hilo, Akaka Falls State Park is home to two separate falls: 100-foot Kahuna Falls and 442-foot Akaka Falls. The hike is easy and paved, so it’s an excursion that works well for families of kids of every age.

6. Take a UTV Tour

UTV Tours Big Island Hawaii near Hawi

The coastal areas around the town of Hawi on the north of the island offer magnificent views and lush landscapes. The best way to explore and take in the scenery is to take a UTV tour.

Eco-adventure company Kohala UTV Adventure operates tours for kids ages 5+ with a driver 21+. While you’ll get dusty and dirty, this is still a family-friendly ride. The operators are the same fine folks who used to own Flumin’ Kohala before the historic Kohala Ditch was damaged and had to close (our family took a tour of the Ditch when it was open and had great experiences with their team).

7. Dine at the Kona Brewing Company

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Kona Brewing Company

Yes, you should take your children to a brewery! The Kona Brewing Company is as family-friendly as it gets, with a pub serving lots of things kids will eat and love. Meanwhile, parents can sample some of the more unique beer offerings that you can only get in their island location. It’s a win-win.

8. Sample Shave Ice

Hawaii Big Island with Kids - Kid and Shave Ice

It’s Hawaii’s most iconic snack, so make sure to try some authentic shave ice somewhere on the Big Island during your visit. Our family’s pick? Anuenue on the Kohala Coast in the town of Kawaihae. Ululani’s (with a location in Kailua-Kona) is another well-known brand all over Hawaii that won’t steer you wrong.

9. Beach Hop

Not all of the resorts on the Big Island are known for their beaches. So if you choose to stay in a resort that isn’t on an iconic beach, be sure to go visit one or two of the islands best beaches. Favorites for family travelers include the highly swimmable beaches in front of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (Kauna’oa Bay) or  Westin Hapuna Beach Resort (Hapuna Beach). For a more unique beach-going experience, check out Punalu’u Black Sand Beach on the south side of the island.

10. Hike through a Lava Tube

family trip hawaii

Not far from KOA airport, you might spot a number of cars pulled off to the side of the Queen’s Highway in the middle of black lava flows. Believe it or not, there is lava tube and cave at this location that you can climb into and explore. It’s a quick stop – plan for maybe 20 minutes or so – but be sure to bring decent hiking shoes because you may cut your feet in flip flops. And be careful of traffic since parking is right along the busy highway.

11. Zip Down a Zipline

There are several zipline tour companies on the lush north and east sides of the Big Island to take your family on an eco-adventure. The major operator within easy driving distance of most Kohala Coast resorts is Kohala Zipline in Hawi. Kohala Zipline offers a half-day Kohala Canopy Adventure as well as the Kohala Zip & Dip tour which is a full day of both ziplining and waterfalls.

Closer to Hilo on the eastern side of the island, the major providers are Umauma Falls Experience and Hawaii Zipline Tours . Umauma Falls Experience offers the Umauma Falls 9 Line Zipline Tour as well as a Zip & Dip Combo that includes ziplining, swimming and kayaking.

Just be sure to check age and weight requirements because most companies won’t take younger children.

Additional Tips for Visiting Hawaii’s Big Island

Visiting Hawaii’s Big Island with kids? Here are a few final tips my family has learned from our many experiences there.

  • Rent a car : While I have visited O’ahu without a car before, I really wouldn’t recommend it on the Big Island. The distances are too great and the other transportation options are too slim. Cars will give you the freedom to adjust your schedule on the fly and leave your resort for new activities, restaurants, and shopping.
  • Consider a condo : Hotels don’t always work for family travelers, especially those with babies who need a separate place to sleep or those with teens who need their privacy. Luckily, many of the hotel properties mentioned in this article have affiliated condo rentals nearby that can give you the best of both worlds. Just check the condo locations closely (many are not located within walking distance of the beach) and make sure you rent from a company that gives you full hotel privileges (some VRBO rentals, for example, can come with restricted access).
  • Hire a sitter : If you aren’t staying at a resort with a kids club, I highly recommend hiring a sitter so parents can get a night out. So many of the dining experiences on the Big Island are expensive, and adults can enjoy them and get more value without little ones. Our family has used the excellent and background-checked sitters of Malihini Keiki Care on many vacations for over a decade.
  • Give yourself a week : So many families want to come to the state of Hawaii on a week’s vacation and island hop to multiple places to see it all. You can’t. I’d recommend at least 4 days on just the Big Island to do it justice, but a full week is even more preferable.

Ok...I appreciate the info, but most of these activities seem to be for older kids—zip lining, flumin da ditch, swimming with manta rays, etc. not necessarily “tyke” friendly ??

Oahu on a budget: 5 things to do for free, adding value to your hawaiian vacation, natural hawaii, more about hawaii.

Discover the differences between these majestic islands and choose your paradise.

Hawaii Island is the largest of the islands and sits at the southernmost part of the chain. A temperamental youngest sibling of the family, this island is full of drama, adventure, and natural beauty. Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, tour a local coffee plantation, stroll seaside villages, travel back in time at Puukoholo Heiau National Historic Site, and stand at the southernmost point of the United States where nothing but ocean separates you from Antarctica.

Kauai is the oldest of the islands and keeps watch over the others from the northernmost point of the chain. With age comes beauty and the dramatic landscape of Kauai reflects this sentiment. Hike Waimea Canyon and gaze at the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, trek the Koloa Heritage Trail for a glimpse of the past, visit local botanical gardens for their tropical treasures, tour cascading waterfalls, and helicopter out to the Na Pali coastline for the ultimate vantage point.

Maui is the second-largest island and just to the north of Hawaii Island. Known for famous beaches and championship golf courses, Maui delivers an experience filled with magic and beauty to visitors. Witness an awe-inspiring sunrise at Haleakala, snorkel with sea turtles at Molokini, stroll the eclectic shops in Lahaina and witness a ceremonial cliff dive at Black Rock.

Sandwiched between Kauai and Maui is the bustling island of Oahu. The most populated in the chain, Oahu offers a unique blend of modern and ancient influences. Transforming the southern coastline is the city of Honolulu while monster waves rule the northern coast. Reflect on U.S. history at Pearl Harbor, stroll through the pineapple maze at the Dole Plantation, hike the Diamond Head crater for unobstructed views of Waikiki Beach, visit the new International Market Place, and watch big wave surfers tackle the Banzai Pipeline.

There is indeed an island for every personality. Find your Hawaii, find your paradise.

Trump VP contender Kristi Noem responds to backlash over story about killing her dog

Former President Donald Trump greets South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem at a rally hosted by the South Dakota Republican Party on Sept. 8 in Rapid City, S.D.

Kristi Noem, a contender for Donald Trump's vice presidential running mate, defended herself after her story saying she had killed a dog on her farm drew condemnation from Democrats and animal rights groups.

In her forthcoming memoir, the South Dakota governor describes killing an "untrainable" family dog after a hunting trip, reported The Guardian , which said it obtained a copy of the book, No Going Back: The Truth on What's Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward .

Noem said "Cricket," a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer, was a female with an "aggressive personality," according to The Guardian .

During a pheasant-hunting trip, the dog went "out of her mind with excitement," and later attacked another family's chickens. And when she went to grab Cricket, Noem says, the dog bit her.

"I hated that dog," Noem wrote in the excerpt. The dog was "dangerous to anyone she came in contact with" and "less than worthless" as a hunting dog.

"I realized I had to put her down," she wrote. The newspaper did not say when Noem said the incident occurred.

According to The Guardian , Noem said she included the grisly story to demonstrate her readiness in politics to do what needs to be done, even if it's "difficult, messy and ugly."

Animal welfare organizations decried Noem for killing the dog.

Wayne Pacelle, the president of Animal Wellness Action, said: "There's no rational and plausible excuse for Noem shooting a juvenile dog for normal puppy-like behavior."

"Raising and caring for a dog takes patience and kindness," he said in a statement. "Tens of millions of Americans who know and love dogs have to wonder about a person who expresses hatred for a young female dog and kills her."

Colleen O'Brien, senior vice president at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), denounced the governor for "letting this rambunctious puppy loose on chickens and then punishing her by deciding to personally blow her brains out rather than attempting to train her or find a more responsible guardian."

Democrats also slammed Noem, while holding it up as an example of how "extreme and dangerous" Trump and his allies are.

In a statement shared with The Hill , the Democratic National Committee said: "If you want elected officials who don't brag about brutally killing their pets as part of their self-promotional book tour, then listen to our owners — and vote Democrat."

On Friday, Noem defended her decision to put down the dog.

"We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm," she wrote in a post on X. "Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years."

Hawaii lawmakers take aim at vacation rentals after Lahaina wildfire amplifies Maui housing crisis

The blaze burned single family homes and apartments in and around downtown, by audrey mcavoy | associated press • published april 21, 2024.

A single mother of two, Amy Chadwick spent years scrimping and saving to buy a house in the town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui. But after a devastating fire leveled Lahaina in August and reduced Chadwick's home to white dust, the cheapest rental she could find for her family and dogs cost $10,000 a month.

Chadwick, a fine-dining server, moved to Florida where she could stretch her homeowners insurance dollars. She’s worried Maui’s exorbitant rental prices, driven in part by vacation rentals that hog a limited housing supply, will hollow out her tight-knit town.

Most people in Lahaina work for hotels, restaurants and tour companies and can’t afford $5,000 to $10,000 a month in rent, she said.

“You’re pushing out an entire community of service industry people. So no one’s going to be able to support the tourism that you’re putting ahead of your community,” Chadwick said by phone from her new home in Satellite Beach on Florida’s Space Coast. “Nothing good is going to come of it unless they take a serious stance, putting their foot down and really regulating these short-term rentals.”

The Aug. 8 wildfire killed 101 people and destroyed housing for 6,200 families, amplifying Maui's already acute housing shortage and laying bare the enormous presence of vacation rentals in Lahaina. It reminded lawmakers that short-term rentals are an issue across Hawaii, prompting them to consider bills that would give counties the authority to phase them out.

Gov. Josh Green got so frustrated he blurted an expletive during a recent news conference.

“This fire uncovered a clear truth, which is we have too many short-term rentals owned by too many individuals on the mainland and it is b———t,” Green said. “And our people deserve housing, here.”

Vacation rentals are a popular alternative to hotels for those seeking kitchens, lower costs and opportunities to sample everyday island life. Supporters say they boost tourism, the state's biggest employer. Critics revile them for inflating housing costs, upending neighborhoods and contributing to the forces pushing locals and Native Hawaiians to leave Hawaii for less expensive states.

This migration has become a major concern in Lahaina. The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, a nonprofit, estimates at least 1,500 households — or a quarter of those who lost their homes — have left since the August wildfire.

The blaze burned single family homes and apartments in and around downtown, which is the core of Lahaina's residential housing. An analysis by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization found a relatively low 7.5% of units there were vacation rentals as of February 2023.

Lahaina neighborhoods spared by the fire have a much higher ratio of vacation rentals: About half the housing in Napili, about 7 miles north of the burn zone, is short-term rentals.

West Maui is open for tourists, but locals still struggle with housing and trauma

Napili is where Chadwick thought she found a place to buy when she first went house hunting in 2016. But a Canadian woman secured it with a cash offer and turned it into a vacation rental.

Also outside the burn zone are dozens of short-term rental condominium buildings erected decades ago on land zoned for apartments.

In 1992, Maui County explicitly allowed owners in these buildings to rent units for less than 180 days at a time even without short-term rental permits. Since November, activists have occupied the beach in front of Lahaina's biggest hotels to push the mayor or governor to use their emergency powers to revoke this exemption.

Money is a powerful incentive for owners to rent to travelers: a 2016 report prepared for the state found a Honolulu vacation rental generates 3.5 times the revenue of a long-term rental.

State Rep. Luke Evslin, the Housing Committee chair, said Maui and Kauai counties have suffered net losses of residential housing in recent years thanks to a paucity of new construction and the conversion of so many homes to short-term rentals.

“Every alarm bell we have should be ringing when we’re literally going backwards in our goal to provide more housing in Hawaii,” he said.

In his own Kauai district, Evslin sees people leaving, becoming homeless or working three jobs to stay afloat.

The Democrat was one of 47 House members who co-sponsored one version of legislation that would allow short-term rentals to be phased out. One objective is to give counties more power after a U.S. judge in 2022 ruled Honolulu violated state law when it attempted to prohibit rentals for less than 90 days. Evslin said that decision left Hawaii's counties with limited tools, such as property taxes, to control vacation rentals.

Lawmakers also considered trying to boost Hawaii's housing supply by forcing counties to allow more houses to be built on individual lots. But they watered down the measure after local officials said they were already exploring the idea.

Short-term rental owners said a phase-out would violate their property rights and take their property without compensation, potentially pushing them into foreclosure. Some predicted legal challenges.

Alicia Humiston, president of the Rentals by Owner Awareness Association, said some areas in West Maui were designed for travelers and therefore lack schools and other infrastructure families need.

“This area in West Maui that is sort of like this resort apartment zone — that’s all north of Lahaina — it was never built to be local living,” Humiston said.

One housing advocate argues that just because a community allowed vacation rentals decades ago doesn't mean it still needs to now.

"We are not living in the 1990s or in the 1970s,” said Sterling Higa, executive director of Housing Hawaii's Future. Counties “should have the authority to look at existing laws and reform them as necessary to provide for the public good.”

Courtney Lazo, a real estate agent who is part of Lahaina Strong, the group occupying Kaanapali Beach, said tourists can stay in her hometown now but many locals can't.

“How do you expect a community to recover and heal and move forward when the people who make Lahaina, Lahaina, aren’t even there anymore?” she said at a recent news conference as her voice quivered. “They’re moving away.”
