Safety and Security

Public Safety: Although demonstrations are not common in Fiji, you should avoid marches and large crowds, remembering that even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent unexpectedly.

Crime:  Crime: Remain cautious and alert in public places. Urban areas experience a higher incidence of crime than rural areas, but there are specific locations to avoid. Most crime is opportunistic. If you are not familiar with an area, ask hotel staff about areas to avoid.

  • Several assaults and robberies have occurred in the bar and nightclub district of downtown Suva, the waterfront/seawall area during hours of darkness, as well as on Victoria Parade Street. Consider taking door-to-door transportation.
  • Violent robberies and assaults continue to occur within the Colo I Suva Forest Park and as of July 2023 there is no security presence on the trails.
  • Be attentive to your personal safety and be cautious about sharing too much personal information about where you are from and where you are staying while traveling.
  • Reports of sexual assault against female tourists have increased. You should not walk alone after dark and always be sure to avoid isolated and deserted areas.
  • Since some crime takes place in taxis, do not allow taxis to pick up other passengers while you are enroute. Similarly, you should never enter a taxi already carrying other passengers.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance at + (679) 331-4466, or after hours at +(679) 772-8049.

Report crimes to the local police at 911 and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (679) 331-4466, or after hours at +(679) 772-8049. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy for assistance.

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Disaster preparedness:

  • Fiji is located in an area of high seismic activity called the “Ring of Fire” and is subject to earthquakes which can trigger a tsunami.
  • The rainy (or monsoon) season in the South Pacific is from November to April, when strong winds, heavy rains, landslides, and disruptions to services could occur.
  • For information about tropical cyclone preparedness, visit our disaster preparedness webpage and  NOAA's Hurricane Preparedness Guide.
  • For information about all types of natural disasters, visit the  CDC webpages .

  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  The constitution of Fiji prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity and expression. Fijian law also prohibits discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation; however, there are no laws specifically prohibiting discrimination against LGBTQI+ persons in other areas.

LGBTQI+ travelers may encounter difficulties when pursuing adoption, marriage, devolution of property on death and pension, and holding public office.

Fijian law does not criminalize consensual same-sex sexual activity and recognizes male-on-male rape as a crime.

In general attitudes toward LGBTQI+ individuals have become more accepting, especially among the young, and articles promoting tolerance are regularly found in the media.

See   our  LGBTQI+ Travel Information   page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance.   All persons are considered equal under Fijian law, and discrimination against persons with disabilities in employment, education, provision of housing and land, or provision of other state services is illegal. Statutes provide for the right of access to places and all modes of transport are open to the public. Public health regulations include penalties for noncompliance; however, there is little or no enforcement of laws protecting persons with disabilities.

Building regulations require new public buildings to be accessible to persons with disabilities, but only a few existing buildings meet this requirement. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, all new office spaces must be accessible to persons with disabilities. The number of disabled-accessible vehicles in the country is small.

There are some special schools for persons with physical, cognitive, and sensory disabilities, but cost and location limit access. Opportunities for a secondary school education for those with disabilities are very limited.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Fiji dial 911 or 910.

Ambulance services are not widely available and training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards. Ambulances are often not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

The Department of State does not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Medication : Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

The U.S. Embassy maintains  a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities:

  • Health facilities are available in major cities, but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Public medical clinics sometimes lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Hospitals and doctors often require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Most hospitals and medical professionals require cash payment.
  • Hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions

Pharmaceuticals:

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the  Food and Drug Administration  websites for more information.

Adventure Travel:

  • Scuba divers should be aware that Fiji’s hyperbaric chamber is currently not in service, and the nearest chambers are in New Zealand and Australia.
  • While Fiji  continues work to bring a new chamber online, divers should consider insurance that covers both decompression treatment and, if needed, medical evacuation to a third country.
  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

General Health Information:

The following diseases are prevalent:

  • Chikungunya

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Resources for Travelers  regarding specific issues in Fiji.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   Traffic moves on the left in Fiji. While most roads in urban areas are paved, they are poorly maintained. Roads outside the city are usually not paved. In the city, be especially attentive when driving after dark. Outside of the city, it is best to avoid driving after dark except in emergency or exceptional circumstances. Insufficient lighting, stray animals, and potholes make driving dangerous and particularly hazardous at night.

Traffic Laws:  Driving while intoxicated is illegal in Fiji. Use of a mobile phone while driving is illegal. Bicycle riders should be cautious as there is no separate lane for cyclists.

Public Transportation:  Avoid using minivans and public buses for public transportation, due to safety concerns.   There have been multiple recent reports of public buses catching fire or having severe accidents.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information

Visit the website of Fiji’s  national tourist office   and  national authority  responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:   The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Fiji’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Fiji’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  The U.S. Coast Guard has concerns about the security practices in the ports of Fiji.  Until those concerns can be addressed, the Coast Guard advises that Mariners and passengers traveling through the ports of Fiji should exercise caution.

Mariners planning travel to Fiji should check for U.S. maritime  advisories  and  alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport  website, and the  NGA broadcast warnings website.

Fiji is an incredible island nation with the kind of stunning beaches and vibrant culture that will make you never want to leave. But first you need to arrive, and a big part of that is figuring out whether you need a visa and how to get one if you do.

The good news is citizens of over 100 countries do not need a visa to enter Fiji for stays up to four months. This includes passport holders from Australia, New Zealand, the EU, Canada, the United States, the UK, South Africa, India, Japan, the Philippines and China.

To enter, passports must be valid for at least six months past the date of departure from Fiji and have one blank page. Currency over FJD$10,000 must be declared on entry and exit. Travelers must also have proof of an outbound ticket as well as proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay in Fiji.

Visitor visas and requirements

If you're not a citizen of a visa-exempt country, there are two types of visitor entry visas you can apply for – a Single Entry Visa or a Multiple Entry Visa. Both can be applied for at the Fijian Immigration Department offices in Fiji or any Fiji high commission or embassy abroad.

Before submitting your application, complete the accompanying application checklist  and bring all the relevant documents to any Fiji High Commission, Fiji Embassy or send them by post to the visa processing offices in Fiji. Visas take three working days to process upon receipt, but budget at least three weeks for follow-up questions, verification or mail delays.

A Single Entry Visa is valid for a single entry into Fiji for stays up to three months and costs FJD$95, while a Multiple Entry Visa is valid for up to 12 months. A visitor on this visa may enter multiple times, but each stay must be shorter than four months and it costs FJD$189.

Visas are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, but most applicants seeking a visa for holiday purposes will need to provide a certified copy of their passport, two passport photos, hotel booking confirmation, a copy of their travel itinerary, proof of funds for the duration of their stay, proof of an onward ticket and potentially a letter of consent from a parent, spouse or employer. Full details for visa requirements are found on the Fiji Department of Immigration website .

Fiji visa extensions

Travelers can extend their stay in Fiji by applying for a visa extension in Fiji at Department of Immigration offices found throughout Fiji. Most extensions are granted for an additional two months, allowing for stays of up to six months total – though you may be able to stay longer depending on your circumstances. The visa extension costs FJD$95 and all travelers who apply for an extension must show proof of an onward ticket and proof of funds to support their full stay.

Study and work visas in Fiji

Fiji also offers visas for study and employment in Fiji, though these are issued on a case-by-case basis and visas are typically lodged with assistance from the Fiji institution or employer. Students must show proof of an acceptance letter from a Fijian university or school, proof of funds for the duration of their stay, a medical report for courses that last longer than six months and potentially a police clearance from the country of residence.

Work visas are granted to non-Fijian citizens for workers who can show proof of a contract of employment, proof of proficiency in the English language, police clearance from the country of origin and a medical report for contracts longer than six months.

Fiji Tourist Visa Online (e-Visa): Requirements and Application Process

Published: March 11, 2024

A Fiji tourist visa is required for citizens of all non-visa-exempt countries. Fiji tourist visa application is entirely online and hence it’s also referred to as Fiji e-Visa. You can apply for either single or multiple entries.

Here’s everything you need to know about obtaining a Fiji visa online.

Quick summary:

If you haven’t already, read Fiji Visa Guide for details on various Fiji visas for tourists, requirements and eligibility.

Table of Contents

Understanding fiji tourist visa.

Fiji Tourist Visa

Tourist visa validity

The single-entry Fiji tourist visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. You must enter Fiji before it expires.

The multiple-entry Fiji tourist visa is valid for 12 months from the issue date. You can enter Fiji as many times as you like while it’s still valid.

Duration of stay

With either type of tourist visa, single or multiple entries, you can stay in Fiji for up to 4 months. There is no limit to the total time you can stay inside Fiji with the multiple-entry visa as long as each visit is shorter than 4 months.

Allowed number of entries

You can decide which visa to apply for depending on your travel plans.

For example, if you plan on visiting other Pacific Island Nations, it’s wise to apply for a multiple-entry visa as most flights in the South Pacific pass through Fiji.

Allowed ports of entry

If arriving by air, both Nadi and Suva International Airports are allowed ports of entry.

If arriving by sea, you can enter Fiji through Suva, Lautoka, Savusavu, and Levuka. For other ports, like Nadi or Denarau, you must seek prior authorization from the Fijian authorities.

If arriving in a small vessel or yacht, you must give a 48-hour notice of your arrival at a Fijian port .

When to apply

Fiji Immigration advises that you apply 3 months before your scheduled travel date. Processing time can be as short as 3 days or longer than a month, so it’s best to apply as early as possible.

  • Earliest : 3 months before traveling
  • Latest : 1 month before traveling

Visa extension

Extensions are allowed for all tourist visas. You can extend once, for up to 2 more months, giving you a total allowed stay of 6 months. No further extensions are possible under any circumstances.

Extension applications are also done online through the same Fiji visa online portal .

Extensions cost 95.10 FJD.

Fiji Tourist Visa Requirements

Fiji Tourist Visa (e-Visa) Required Countries

Who requires a Fiji tourist visa?

110 nationalities are visa-exempt and do not need a tourist visa. The rest require a tourist visa to travel to Fiji.

Documents required

Here’s the list of required documents for the Fiji e-Visa:

  • Completed Visa Application Form . Print it, fill it in, and then scan it.
  • A passport-sized photo. Paste the photo in the appropriate place on the visa application form before scanning it.
  • Certified passport biodata page
  • Confirmation of booked accommodation (if staying in a hotel)
  • Copy of the travel itinerary
  • Proof of onward travel arrangements and approved visa for next country (if required)
  • A recent bank statement
  • A letter of consent from spouse (if traveling alone)
  • A letter of consent from parents (if under 18 years and traveling alone)
  • Proof of relationship with traveling companion (marriage certificate or birth certificate)
  • A letter of approved leave from the workplace
  • Local sponsor letter (if accommodated with family/friends)
  • Copy of sponsor’s valid ID/passport/permit
  • Return ticket

All files must be in PDF format. The maximum size is listed under each upload section.

Photo requirements

Your photograph for Fiji tourist visa must meet the following requirements.

  • Photo must be less than 6 months old
  • Photo must be a good-quality color photo
  • Photo must show the full-face view of your head and shoulders
  • Photo must be on a plain or light-colored background

The visa fee is 95.10 FJD for single entry and 189.15 FJD for multiple entry.

However, transfers are charged a fee of 10 FJD by the receiving bank in Fiji. You must account for that and send 105.10 FJD or 199.15 FJD respectively.

Fiji Immigration doesn’t process the application if it’s not paid in full. If you fail to account for this bank fee, this may result in extra delays and even further fees for sending more money.

Additionally, when sending an international transfer, the exchange rate may vary and result in a lower amount. Verify details with your bank first.

This is why I advise you to add at least 10 FJD on top of the fee when you pay for your Fiji e-Visa.

Processing time

The Fiji online visa processing time is officially 14 days.

Note that this period starts after your payment is confirmed. Since payments are confirmed by a separate department, it can take a lot more than 2 weeks to get your visa issued.

If your payment is not in full (see the visa fee section above) or there are problems with the transfer, you may be informed of this more than a month later without any progress on your application in the meantime.

I strongly advise you to apply as early as possible but not earlier than 3 months before the date of arrival due to the 3-month validity of the single-entry visa.
