You can ice fish in Manitoba anywhere within the prime areas such as lakes in Western Manitoba, parks in Interlake Region, parks in Eastern Manitoba, and parks in Western Manitoba as well. It’s allowed to fish on frozen lakes anywhere in Manitoba as long as you have a valid license.

The answer is too general? Read on to find your way to the complete detailed guide of where to ice fish in Manitoba and how to make the experience a safe and fruitful one!

Where Can I Ice Fish In Manitoba?

Ice On Lake Manitoba to show where Can I Ice Fish in Manitoba

Ice fishing in Manitoba is allowed anywhere as long as you have a valid fishing license. The winter ice fishing season usually runs from mid-December to mid-March. Found below are the exact prime spots that you can target when you decide to go ice fishing there.

Ice Fishing in Western Manitoba

  • Turtle Mountain Provincial Park
  • Rivers Provincial Park
  • Riding Mountain National Park
  • Duck Mountain Provincial Park
  • Asessippi Provincial Park
  • Porcupine Provincial Forests

Ice Fishing Eastern Manitoba

  • Atikaki Provincial Wilderness Park
  • Nopiming Provincial Park
  • Whiteshell Provincial Park

Other than ice fishing, these parks are top destinations for fishing lodges, cottage resorts, and outfitter camps.

Ice Fishing Northern Manitoba

  • Clearwater Lake Provincial Park
  • Grass River Provincial Park near The Pas, Manitoba
  • Further north near Thompson and Churchill, Manitoba

Interlake Region Ice Fishing

  • Hecla/Grindstone Provincial Park
  • The shores of Lake Winnipeg
  • The shore of Lake Manitoba

All of these places provide excellent chances for successful ice fishing trips. The variety of water bodies offers a variety of possibilities to catch whatever fish you’re looking for whenever they stay. You can catch walleye, perch, northern pike, smallmouth bass, catfish, goldeye, pickerel, arctic char, whitefish and brown, lake, brook, and rainbow trout.

Is It Safe to Ice Fish in Manitoba?

It’s safe to ice fish in Manitoba as long as you check the ice thickness for safety. Whether you check the ice reports before heading to a location or manually check it when you get there, don’t ever step on the ice before making sure it’s safe enough.

Follow this chart to determine ice safety:

  • 2 inches (5 cm) thick or less: don’t step on it.
  • 4 inches (about 10 cm) thick: safe to step on.
  • 5 inches (about 12.5 cm) thick: safe for a snowmobile or ATV.
  • 8-to-12 inches (about 20-to-30.5 cm) thick: safe for a car or small pickup.

Here are some extra precautions to consider when you go ice fishing in Manitoba:

  • Avoid traveling on the ice at night as drilled holes and weak parts of the ice can’t be seen properly.
  • Don’t step on grey ice . The grayness indicates the presence of water.
  • Don’t go fishing alone . It’s better to have a fishing companion to help you in case of emergency, and if you can’t do that make sure to let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
  • Wear flotation suits or life jackets . They maximize your chances of survival if you go through the ice. Learn how to use them and wear them over your layered winter clothes.
  • Take safety equipment with you . That includes ice picks, ice staff, and a rope.
  • Keep a personal safety equipment kit in your pocket . That includes a pocket knife, compass, whistle, fire starter kit, and extra batteries for your cell phone.
  • Drive on ice with caution . Open your windows, unlock your doors, undo your seatbelt, and turn on your lights to work as your escape plan in case your vehicle went through the ice.

What Fish Can You Find in Manitoba?

What fish can you find in Manitoba? You can find various fish species in Manitoba such as walleye, perch, northern pike, smallmouth bass, catfish, goldeye, pickerel, arctic char, whitefish and brown, lake, brook, suckers, Tiger trout, and rainbow trout.

The number of water bodies available for ice fishing in Manitoba allows for a wide variety of fish species that can be caught there.

Perch is very popular in Manitoba. Jumbo perch inhabit every region in Manitoba and can be caught on the hook in any season. However, catching perch through ice seasons is very effective as it is the most productive season of all. You have a chance to catch perch that exceed 15 inches (about 38 cm).

Jumbo yellow perch are also popular due to their healthy population and generous catchable limits. It’s preferable to go for them during the open water months of May and June and during the hard water months of December to March when Manitoba lakes freeze over.

Before you go ice fishing, I highly advise you to check out my recommended Ice Fishing Rods here. I’ve tested countless rods over the years, but these ones I’m recommending are the only ones that have stood out the test of time, so give them a look.

Easy-Access Manitoba Ice Fishing Adventures

Planning a winter ice-fishing adventure to Manitoba’s scenic lake country might be easier and more affordable than you think. It will certainly offer the excuses needed to shut down electronics and plug into a family-friendly fishing trip to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Open borders are providing opportunities to hit the road for a winter-wonderland adventure you’ll love. The time is now! With hardwater right around the corner, we did some research for you to help get the dream kicked off.

Viking Lodge

A few years back, Paul Wiens and his wife, Anita, along with Paul’s brother, Matthew Wiens, and his wife, Sharnell teamed up to purchase Viking Lodge, a fishing and hunting lodge established in the 1950s located in the northwest division of Manitoba. It’s roughly a 7-hour drive from the city of Winnipeg to Viking Lodge, which is situated at the western end of First Cranberry Lake at the headwaters of the Grass River system and the start of the Grass River Provincial Park.

With access to seemingly endless amounts of prime ice fishing, guests at Viking Lodge have an opportunity to catch a fish of a lifetime.

“There are a couple stocked trout lakes near us that have rainbows and brook trout,” Wiens added. “There’s quite a range of trophy species in this area, whether in our lakes or nearby.”

Trophy-class lake trout at Viking Lodge in Manitoba

Viking Lodge offers 16 cabins during the open water season and one winterized cabin that can sleep eight guests. Wiens says Viking Lodge is more of a DIY lodge, especially in the winter, meaning guests bring their own ice fishing gear and tackle.

“It’s a more experienced crowd for sure,” he said.

Groomed snowmobile trails in and around Cranberry Portage makes for easy transportation between lakes in the winter and allows for access to some remote fishing spots.

Lake Athapapuskow, located a mile west of Viking Lodge, and Clearwater Lake to the south are known to hold lake trout that can exceed 45 inches in length with an average-sized laker on First Cranberry Lake coming pretty close.

The middle of the ice fishing season tends to produce better opportunities to catch trophy northern pike while walleye become the species of choice as springtime approaches.

Wiens says he still has openings for the upcoming winter.

Bakers narrows lodge & conference center.

Mac Mulligan and the guide staff at Bakers Narrows is very dedicated to helping guests connect with trophy-class lake trout, northern pike and burbot, which are species generally high on the bucket list of incoming ice anglers. The upcoming winter season will be Mulligan’s fourth as a guide at Bakers Narrows and he’s just as excited now as he was for his first ice fishing season.

ITEM NAME

Bakers Narrows offers an all-inclusive ice fishing outfitter option complete with pop-up shelters and gear or a DIY plan under which guests stay in one of the log cottages or micro cottages and bring their own equipment. Mulligan said a lot of guests come for a week during the winter as they are “specifically targeting big fish.”

“We can supply everything, but most people bring their own stuff,” Mulligan said.

With more experience comes a comfort level when fishing is such cold conditions, he added.

The beauty of connecting with the guides at Bakers Narrows is they will assist guests in finding the perfect scenarios to possibly land a trophy lake trout.

“It’s all about structure and food source and you have to be willing to locate those food sources and find those fish on structure,” he said.

Blackwater Cats Outfitters

While Donovan Pearase offers year-round guide service for various species on a variety of fisheries in southern Manitoba, the ice fishing portion, especially on Lake Winnipeg, has become the main focus on his Blackwater Cats Outfitter service.

Lake Winnipeg Walleye with Blackwater Cats

The most popular species to target among his clients, by far, is the walleye in Lake Winnipeg. Known for the iridescent green coloring on their backs, believed to be due to the limestone substrate around the lake, the walleye in Lake Winnipeg have an immense amount of forage to feast on, allowing them to reach trophy-caliber sizes.

And Pearase is happy to help visitors haul monster walleye through the ice. From full-service ice fishing packages that include use of a Chevy Suburban equipped with tracks for better maneuverability, especially during the height of winter, to one-day guided trips, Pearase and his crew are eager to put guests on trophy fish.

ITEM NAME

“The key with Lake Winnipeg—and this has always been the case with it being a big featureless lake—is you have to find the bait, so you have to be willing and have the ability to be mobile,” he said.

Many of his customers come equipped with a fair amount of ice fishing experience and many bring their own gear, but he also can help beginners have a memorable time.

“We can offer anything you need,” he said. “Most of our clientele knows the deal – the more efficient and equipped they can be the better off they’ll be. Many guests are fully equipped, so we’ll put them on fish and have them move with us.”

Manitoba man sentenced to house arrest for keeping fishing tournament funds meant for Children's Hospital Foundation

Ice fishing

A Manitoba man who pleaded guilty to keeping the funds raised from an ice-fishing fundraiser for the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba has been handed a sentence of 18 months house arrest.

Christian Lillyman and his partner were arrested and charged in December 2022 after more than $13,000 was not paid to the foundation.

According to details shared in court on Thursday, Lillyman had reached out to the foundation in January 2021, with the plan to host a fishing derby and the money raised would go to the foundation.

The Full Tilt Winter Walleye Tournament had 492 people register and more than $22,000 was collected in entry fees.

Once the tournament ended, more than $9,000 was awarded as prize money, with the remaining roughly $13,000 supposed to go to the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba – but the money never came.

"The people working at the foundation have a sincere desire to help sick kids and they trust the third-party donors that come to us who say they also want to help kids in hospital. So this breach of trust caused a sense of sadness, anger, and then significant worry for our staff members," said the president and CEO of the foundation Stefano Grande, in a victim impact statement shared with the court.

The court heard Lillyman had "good intentions" when he set out to raise the money, but fell on hard times during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was a self-employed painter and when COVID hit, his contracts dried up, the court heard.

Lillyman's lawyer said after the tournament, Lillyman would borrow money from the $13,000 pot with hopes of paying it back once he got new contracts for work, but it never happened.

Once Lillyman entered a guilty plea, the charges against his partner were stayed, the Crown said, noting Lillyman was "solely responsible."

Lillyman has since found a job and has already paid back $3,000 to the foundation, the court heard.

He said he regretted what he did and has grown from this experience.

As part of his sentence, Lillyman must make monthly payments to the foundation until the remaining $10,000 is paid off.

If he doesn't follow through, Judge Dale Schille warned jail time could be possible.

"If you don't make the payments, you will be back here to see me," Schille told Lillyman.

Bring Back In-Person Field Trips. Here’s Why

ice fishing trips manitoba

  • Share article

Just as peak field trip season was set to get underway in the spring of 2020, the pandemic hit. Schools, and the cultural institutions and countless other organizations that normally welcome K-12 students for experiential learning, closed their doors.

“The pandemic was absolutely devastating for field trips. They went off a cliff, even when schools went back to in-person,” said Susie Wilkening, principal of Wilkening Consulting, a Seattle-based audience research firm.

Statistics bear this out. In the spring of 2023, Wilkening Consulting and the American Alliance of Museums conducted a survey of 340 museum directors from around the country on post-pandemic visitation. Forty percent of respondents reported that they continued to experience lower on-site visitation from K-12 teachers and students.

Several factors may be keeping schools from venturing back to in-person field trips. Virtual field trips rose in popularity during the pandemic, allowing students to glimpse educational sites as far-flung as the Egyptian pyramids or the Louvre art museum in Paris from the comfort of their homes or classrooms—and those opportunities still exist.

Logistics and funding may also be preventing schools from returning to on-site field trips. Educational researchers have suggested that some schools prioritize putting resources toward activities that may improve student achievement on standardized tests over experiences like field trips, whose results aren’t as quantifiable. That may especially be the case for schools struggling to help students recover from pandemic-era learning declines.

The argument for doing field trips again

But a growing body of research, advocacy from some district-level officials, and anecdotes from students provide compelling reasons for bringing back in-person field trips.

Lin Tajeken Jeufack, a high school junior at Kenwood High School in Maryland’s Baltimore County schools, vividly recalls how a 6th grade field trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore that offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into husbandry of aquatic animals planted an idea in her head about one day becoming a marine biologist.

Lin described testing the water in the animal tanks, peering under a microscope in an onsite laboratory at the aquarium, and learning about a profession she knew little about. The 16-year-old, who is now enrolled in her school’s International Baccalaureate program, volunteers at a local hospital, and says she’s leaning toward majoring in math in college, though she hasn’t ruled out a career in marine biology. Lin still welcomes the opportunity to attend in-person field trips—like a recent outing to the Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute, an art museum that features a “Giant Heart” exhibit that allows visitors to walk through the organ’s enormous, lifelike chambers.

“I think students feel safer now [post-pandemic],” said Lin. “We have a really tough course load; we’re always working. It’s good for us to get away from school for a little while.”

Students from Centreville Elementary School in Fairfax, Va. release brook trout that they’ve grown from eggs in their classroom into Passage Creek at Elizabeth Furnace Recreational Area in the George Washington National Forest in Fort Valley, Va. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The students spent the day outside bidding farewell to their class pet and participating in other outdoor educational activities.

Field trips are especially beneficial for disadvantaged students

The lasting benefits of field trips don’t necessarily register in students’ consciousness at the moment of the visit. But these experiential outings have been proven to increase student interest in, knowledge about, and motivation to study subject matter to which they’re exposed, according to a sweeping, decade-old report by Ohio University researchers on field trips. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to reap the biggest benefits from these experiences, as they are less likely to have the opportunity to engage in these activities outside of school-sponsored trips.

That’s not lost on Kadee Anstadt, superintendent/CEO of Washington Local Schools in Toledo, Ohio, who’s committed to ensuring that the students in her high-poverty district take field trips routinely.

“We are quite intentional now about the breadth of experiences we are offering our students,” said Anstadt, who recently established what she refers to as “superinten-dates,” in which she personally takes groups of students on field trips they likely wouldn’t otherwise experience.

“As an urban district, our kids sometimes don’t get to see their larger community. We’ve been to the Detroit Auto Show, to hear a Holocaust survivor, experienced the Toledo Opera, and taken the entire junior class to the Henry Ford Museum,” she said.

Some of the field trips students in the Washington Local Schools take are culturally enriching; others, practical. The district has developed a partnership with two local YMCA branches in which every 2nd grader receives eight water safety lessons.

“This ensures our kids know the dangers of a pool, pond, or lake, and also know how to get help if they need it. Some learn to swim during this time. For so many, it’s the first time they’ve ever been in a pool,” said Anstadt.

Since last year, more than 1,000 of the district’s approximately 7,000 students have received the lessons.

Fish hatcheries, hiking, ice fishing, and Native American landmarks

Laurie Barron, superintendent of the Evergreen school district in Montana, shares a philosophy on experiential field trips similar to Anstadt’s—but with vastly different surroundings to explore.

“We are in northwestern Montana bordering Glacier National Park, a recreation mecca,” said Barron, reeling off a number of recreational and cultural resources available within a quick bus trip: fish hatcheries, hiking, ice fishing, skiing, forestry opportunities, and Native American landmarks.

Barron says administrators aim for younger students in the K-8 district to go on between two and four trips per year, a number that increases to six to eight trips by the time students reach 8th grade.

“We love for them to have several off-campus opportunities each year, experiencing the great west Montana outdoors. It’s very relevant and easy to connect that to our curriculum and content,” Barron said. “And students remember a lot more that way than just reading about places in a book.”

One of the goals of the meeting was to discuss how schools can better integrate new students and families into the district.
