Mini Cruises to Test the Waters

Never been on mini cruises? Come test the waters…

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

By Marcia Raffel Levin

Mini cruises are important as the cruise industry keeps growing. New ships, new itineraries , new entertainment offerings, kids’ programs, dining venues, shore excursions, etc. are announced daily.

Yet many travelers have yet to set foot aboard a cruise ship. Maybe it has to do with them being unfamiliar with cruising. Or knowing what one can experience on a cruise . Or, perhaps, believing cruising is expensive, looking for a cheaper cruise.

Perhaps a mini-cruise is the answer – a kind of appetizer before the main course.

Just look at the offerings from Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and Bahamas Paradise Cruises on two- and three-day cruises.

Enjoyable 2- or 3-Day Mini Cruises

“Mini cruises are a great way for first-time cruisers to test the water so to speak,” says Vance Gullickson, senior public relations manager at Carnival Cruise Lines.”

people having drinks at a pool on a mini-cruise

“At Carnival, roughly half of our itineraries are five days or less with voyages departing from convenient homeports along the East and West Coasts and the Gulf of Mexico. We’ve recently deployed newer and larger ships on short cruises and these ships have undergone extensive refurbishments that added exciting food, beverage and entertainment concepts.”

Short, relatively cheap cruises – sailings of two- or three-days in length – are also an easy way to get to know what vacations on the water are all about.

These mini cruises introduce novices to the lifeboat drill, cabin service, fine (and plentiful) food and entertainment. And there’s also the opportunity to enjoy the pool, fitness spa, casino and all the lovely public areas on today’s crop of cruise vessels.

These are all the facets of cruising that keeps aficionados coming back on board time and time and again. Often these fans also opt for a week, a 10-day sailing, or even a transatlantic experience for their next ocean adventure.

Mini-Cruise Sailings From Florida, Texas and California

Carnival Cruise Line offers three- and four-day sailings from various Florida, Texas and California ports of call to both the Bahamas and the Caribbean or Mexican ports.

These cruises allow plenty of time for sightseeing, shopping and sampling local foods. They provide a taste of what cruise passengers do in port.

Carnival Victory sails three- and four-day itineraries from PortMiami to the Bahamas and to the Bahamas and Key West. The ship spent 17 days in drydock earlier this year where many new dining venues were added. Consider Blue Iguana Cantina and Tequila Bar, Bonsai Sushi and Red Frog Rum Bar. New categories of cabins were also added.

Shorter, Cheaper Cruises Perfect for Families on Carnival, Royal Caribbean

There are activities for children across many fleets on many three-day mini cruises. Carnival’s signature Seuss at Sea program for children, for example. Is quite popular. In June and July alone kids read 213 million Dr. Seuss words while in the ships’ programs. The Seuss deal also includes a parade of Seuss characters (including the Cat in the Hat,) and a Seuss breakfast.

Herby Camy has been Guest Services Manager on Carnival vessel for 10 years and says he enjoys the challenge of new programs and finds it especially challenging on shorter sailings.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines Mariner of the Seas is part of the boat parade of shorter, cheaper cruises. They have three- and four -night sailings to the Bahamas from PortMiami. The ship also recently enjoyed a $90 million makeover including programs that offer Sky Pad, a virtual reality experience and a duo of water slides.

“Weekend Like They Really Mean It” On a Mini Cruise

Michal Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International said, “With the new Mariner of the Seas we invite travelers to weekend like they really mean it, and make the most of a quick getaway than they even thought possible.”

The ship had added some new features on short Royal Caribbean sailings. Enchantment of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas does four- and five- night sailings from Galveston to the Caribbean.

a pool-side bar on a ship

Norwegian Cruise Lines also offers three- and four-day cruises from PortMiami or Port Canaveral. There are also varied five-day offerings to the western Caribbean from PortMiami or Port of Tampa. Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun offer a free open bar.

Five-day Pacific Coastal cruises sailing from Vancouver, calling at San Francisco, Victoria, and Los Angeles and other five-day offerings from Port Miami or Tampa to the Western Caribbean including to Costa Maya, Mexico.

When in Rome or Barcelona Norwegian offers short sailings where ports of call might include Florence and Naples or the French Riviera.

And if a three-day cruise is too much for first-timers, also consider a two-night mini cruise from Palm Beach to Bimini in the Bahamas on Bahamas Paradise Cruises .

As a famous tag line from long ago goes, “try it…you’ll like it.”

Bon voyage!

The best mini cruises to book in 2022 and 2023

Author: Kaye Holland

Published on: 06 September 2022

Updated on: 04 October 2022

Ready to get back to school? Us neither. If you’re also at your desk, dreaming of getting away but short on annual leave, or worried about the rising cost of living, then a mini cruise for 2022/2023 is the solution.

Mini cruises , be they river cruises or ocean cruises , tend to be between two to four nights in length - meaning they’re much more affordable than a full-blown cruise while also great for those short on holiday time or looking to try cruising for the very first time. Here are six of the best to book…

Antwerp and Amsterdam Family-owned Fred Olsen , famed for its small ship experience, is offering a mini-cruise to Amsterdam and Antwerp this October. Departing from Dover on October 21, 2022, onboard Bolette – which has just 690 carefully designed cabins – you’ll have ample time in Amsterdam to explore attractions such as the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum as well as the UNESCO-listed Canal Ring. Then it’s on to Belgium, and the historic city of Antwerp to discover treasures such as the Cathedral of Our Lady, traditional Belgian chocolate shops, and the world-famous Diamond district. The fun continues back on board too. Enjoy a meal in Bolette’s rich mix of restaurants and lounges, take in a cooking demonstration in The Auditorium, or simply relax with a drink and a good book in hand, in one of the public spaces. Fred Olsen’s five-night ' Antwerp & Amsterdam city break' departs from Dover on October 21, 2022, onboard Bolette and costs from £349 per person.

Marvellous Marseille Swiss-based MSC Cruises – the world's largest privately-owned cruise line – has a whole host of mini cruises to choose from but their sailing to Marseille , France's pretty yet gritty port city with an edge, caught our eye. Departing on May 25, 2022 onboard MSC Orchestra – who counts Hollywood siren, Sophia Loren, as godmother, the four-night cruise also calls at Barcelona , Catalonia’s capital, as well as Genoa, easily one of Italy’s most underrated cities. The mini cruise includes a day at sea ensuring you have plenty of time to pose on the family-owned line’s signature Swarovski-studded staircases for the Gram. MSC Cruises’ four-night 'Mediterranean from Marseille' cruise onboard MSC Orchestra departs on May 25, 2023, from Marseille and costs from £329 per person (excluding flights).

Miami Nice Sir Richard Branson’s edgy, adults-only line has also embraced the mini cruise concept. We like the sound of the four-night Fire & Sunset Soirées itinerary onboard Scarlet Lady , Virgin Voyages' first cruise ship. Departing from always lively Miami on November 2, 2022, you’ll sail to the pastel-hued streets of Key West, with a day at The Beach Club at Bimini, Bahamas – complete with Virgin Voyages’ signature bonfire bash under the stars where passengers are encouraged to wear (what else?) red. Departing on November 2, 2022, prices for Virgin Voyages’ four-night ' Fire & Sunset Soirées' mini cruise start at £783 per person.

Caribbean Queen If you’re not averse to folding yourself into a plane for 10 hours and you’re craving some Caribbean sunshine, then Royal Caribbean’s three-night Bahamas & Perfect Day Cruise onboard Independence of the Seas has your name on it. Departing from Orlando, Florida, on February 24, 2023, the itinerary takes in Nassau, the vibrant hub of The Bahamas, as well as Coco Cay island – the first of Royal Caribbean’s five 'Perfect Day' islands to be unveiled around the world. The cruise giant has spent £150 million creating the perfect Caribbean private island: Expect powder-perfect beaches, bars, a hot air balloon, water park, restaurants and more set over 125 idyllic acres. Royal Caribbean’s three-night 'Bahamas & Perfect Day' cruise onboard Independence of the Seas departs on February 24, 2023, and costs from £303 per person (excluding flights).

Majestic capitals of the Danube If a river cruise is more your bag, look to AmaWaterways . The luxury river cruise line will offer five-night cruises from 2023 courtesy of their new Majestic Capitals of the Danube itinerary. Delight in the Old-World grandeur of Europe’s most spectacular capital cities including Budapest and Vienna and take advantage of up to five included excursions each day. Choose from guided hikes to hilltop castles such as Bratislava’s gleaming fortress, bike tours to beautiful sites like Klosterneuburg Abbey, and samplings of sachertorte – the cake that started a national holiday in Austria. Whether you are sailing the Danube River for the very first time or returning to venture deeper into favourite cities, AmaWaterways’ new mini cruise ticks all the boxes. Departing from Budapest on April 17, 2023, onboard AmaLea, AmaWaterways’ five-night 'Majestic Capitals of the Danube' cruise costs from £1,623 per person.

Christmas on the Rhine Make Christmas 2023 the merriest one of them all on a special festive cruise along the Rhine with small ship expert, Emerald Cruises . Sailing from Mainz on November 28, 2023, through Germany’s beloved wine region aboard an Emerald Cruises’ Star-Ship, you’ll get to visit the spa town of Baden Baden, stroll the fairytale streets of Strasbourg, with its cobbled streets and timber-framed houses, and explore the enchanting Black Forest region – as well as enjoying traditional Christmas carols with an onboard performance by a local choir and much, much more. Emerald Cruises’ five-day 'Christmas time on the Rhine' cruise departs on November 28, 2023 from Mainz with prices starting from £1,027 per person.

RCI-Royal Caribbean's mini-cruises from Florida and Texas in 2022-2023

CruiseMapper logo

RCI-Royal Caribbean International opened bookings for new short cruises in the Caribbean, with a total of 17 itineraries leaving roundtrip from Florida and Texas in 2022-2023.

The Caribbean mini-cruises aim to "redefine" the art of the getaway, giving "vacationers with the flexibility they need without sacrificing the adventure they crave," RCI said.

8 RCI ships will sail from 5 homeports for 3- to 5-night roundtrip itineraries, with 2 liners sailing year-round and 4 seasonally.

Rhapsody Of The Seas cruise ship

Freedom of the Seas is due to sail from Miami Florida to Nassau Bahamas , and visit Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay , during 3- and 4-night cruises.  Independence of the Seas is scheduled to sail from Port Canaveral FL to the Bahamas, making full-day calls in Nassau and on CocoCay. Both ships will sail the short cruises year-round.

Liberty of the Seas is scheduled to leave Fort Lauderdale FL to sail "alternating" 3- and 4-night winter voyages to the Bahamas, visiting CocoCay and Grand Bahama Island (Freeport) . Mariner of the Seas is due to depart from Port Canaveral through the winter months, heading south for CocoCay and the western Caribbean.

Brilliance of the Seas is spending the winter in Tampa FL with 4- and 5-night Western Caribbean itineraries, with select 4-night trips to Nassau and Key West .

Rhapsody of the Seas is scheduled to make 4- and 5-night cruises from Tampa FL to Cozumel, Mexico , and call at George Town, Grand Cayman in the spring and early fall. During the summer, vacationers can extend their trip with a 7-night sailing to Roatan , Belize City , Cozumel, and Costa Maya .

Adventure of the Seas is due to sail from Galveston TX for 4- and 5-night trips to the Western Caribbean visiting Cozumel and Costa Maya, while Grandeur of the Seas is scheduled to leave Galveston TX in summer 2022, sailing 4- and 5-night cruises to Costa Maya and Cozumel.

Short & sweet: 8 best mini cruises in 2023 & 2024

Mini cruise holidays are becoming much more popular with younger travellers looking to squeeze their getaways into a long weekend – here are eight of the best in 2023 and 2024.

Words by Jeannine Williamson

Short on time, money or simply want a getaway break to unwind? A mini cruise ticks all these boxes. It’s also a great way of dipping a proverbial toe in the water if you’re new to a life at sea, or trying out a cruise line for the first time.

The quickest way to get afloat is on a short cruise from Southampton, or you can head overseas to get your mini cruise fix. Here are some of the options.

Santorini greece

Speedy Greek getaway Celestyal Cruises mini cruise

Fancy seeing the most sun-drenched and Instagrammable Greek islands but don’t have oodles of time? You can do it with Celestyal Cruises.

The budget-friendly Greek line has three- and four-night mini cruises that are big on sights. In fact, you’ll likely see more than many people do in a week staying on land.

The round-trip sailings from Athens visit places like uber-trendy Mykonos – keep your eyes peeled and you may well spot some celebs – and the sun-bleached showstopper Santorini.

If you’re feeling a bit more cultural you can explore ancient sites on your mini cruise as well. Back onboard, Celestyal ships provide an extension of the friendly, laid-back Greek lifestyle. They’re not at all stuffy and you can strut your stuff at Greek dance classes, emboldened by the drinks that are included in the fare.

Channel Island hop MSC Cruises mini cruise

Take a two-night mini cruise to Guernsey out of Southampton on MSC Cruises’ big, bold and blingy MSC Virtuosa.

You’ll spend a day in the compact capital St Peter Port where the waterfront is lined with bars and places to eat. Don’t leave without ordering some ice cream made with creamy milk from the island’s doe-eyed golden cows.

On the ship you can sashay up glittering staircases studded with thousands of Swarovski crystals, shop ‘til you drop in designer boutiques and order a drink from Rob , who presides over the Starship Club and is the first humanoid robotic bartender at sea. There are dates to choose from in 2024.

rob-the-robot msc virtuosa

Paint the town red Virgin Voyages mini cruise

Enjoy full-on adult-only fun (wink, wink) on a four-night round-trip sailing from Miami with Virgin Voyages . Virgin revolutionised cruising with ships that reinvented dining , with a street food-style food court, funky cabins with hammocks on the balcony and amazing Rock Star suites equipped with guitars and tables designed to dance on.

Scarlet Lady is a child-free ship where late-night revellers can throw moves in the outsize nightclub, The Manor, and watch festival-like pop-up acts around the vessel.

There’s a stop in cosmopolitan Key West on these mini cruises and a day at Virgin’s private Beach Club in Bimini where you can dive, snorkel or simply chill out in a cabana with another cocktail.

Stylish sundowners Marella Cruises mini cruise

If you can make your holiday stretch to five nights take a look at Marella Cruises ’  Mediterranean Sunsets sailings on Marella Explorer.

The ship has a bumper batch of 10 bars, including the Indigo Bar which is the longest in the Marella fleet , so you can pick your perfect spot for a sundowner. The sailing from Corfu to Malaga includes calls at Alicante and in between there are two days at sea to kick back and enjoy all the onboard attractions.

The lively entertainment scene stretches into the early hours with silent discos and eighties and nineties-themed nights. Other haunts include The Lounge with its colour-changing bar and hot pink piano.

Old Fortress of Corfu, greek island cruises

It’s such a perfect day Royal Caribbean mini cruise

Escape the British winter and January blues to soak up some Caribbean sunshine on one of Royal Caribbean’s four-night Bahamas and Perfect Day mini cruises out of Miami.

After a stop in Nassau, where the Straw Market near the docking spot is a great place to pick up inexpensive hats, bags and jewellery, there’s the Perfect Day at CocoCay . Royal Caribbean’s 120-acre private island is jam-packed with things to do including a waterpark where thrill seekers can tackle Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest slide in North America.

The fun continues back on Freedom of the Seas with its FlowRider surf simulator and glow-in-the-dark laser tag area Clash for the Crystal City. There’s a sailing on January 8, 2024, with similar itineraries available year-round.

Chocs away Celebrity Cruises mini cruise

Get your fill of Belgian waffles, chocolate and a glass or two of one of the country’s 1,500 different beers on a four-day mini cruise from Southampton with Celebrity Cruises .

You can also sign up for a chocolate-making demo followed by an all-important tasting. Leaving on August 23, 2024, the Bruges and Netherlands long weekend also includes a trip to Rotterdam.

If you’ve got a head for heights, and want the best views of the city, head up the 180m Euromast which is the highest observation platform in Holland.

You’ll be aboard the stylish Celebrity Apex where you can sip artisan cocktails such as Forbidden in the whimsical Eden bar, sit in flower-shaped chairs and try to resist touching pink ostrich feather ‘trees’.

Bruges, Belgium

Sound waves Norwegian Cruise Line mini cruise

Forget having to hunt for your tent and the possibility of downpours and mud by going to a music festival at sea. Norwegian Cruise Line hosts some of the best and as they’re held in the Caribbean sunshine is guaranteed.

If you’re an R&B fan and want to do something different next Valentine’s Day Maxwell’s four-day Urban Hang Suite Cruise leaves Miami on February 10, 2024. Grammy-award-winning artist Maxwell will perform two concerts and will be more live music from the likes of Ledisi, Robert Glasper, Sabrina Claudio, and Musiq Soulchild, plus DJs, comedy and parties.

Norwegian Pearl stops at Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, the line’s private island Bahamian playground. Back onboard you don’t need to worry about going thirsty as O’Sheehan’s Irish pub is open 24/7.

Push the boat out Cunard mini cruise

Live a posh Titanic-style lifestyle (minus any icebergs and sinking of course) with Cunard . You can get a taste of the luxe line on a budget with one of the mini cruises from Southampton.

Bag a cabin for less than £300 on a two-night jaunt on the flagship Queen Mary 2 departing on October 20, 2023, and immerse yourself in the retro glamour of afternoon tea served by white-gloved waiters.

There’s a stop in Hamburg , one of Germany’s most multicultural cities, where you can join the local beer culture and sip the city’s own pilsner. Need something stronger? Order lutt um lutt , which is beer fortified with fiery schnapps.

Where can I go on a mini cruise in 2023 & 2024

Amsterdam, netherlands.

A true capital of culture, Amsterdam is a must-see city. Navigate its Golden age canals, explore the 'Dutch' way by bike, take in its vibrant arts scene, or venture out of the city and explore the Netherland's beautiful countryside and charming villages on our Amsterdam mini cruises.

Visit the Flower Auction at Aalsmeer

Immerse yourself in the fragrant aromas and dazzling colors, and learn about the sophisticated sorting process on the auction floor where millions of flowers are bought and sold daily.

Explore Amsterdam by boat

Amsterdam has more than 160 canals and 1,500 bridges and there's nothing like seeing a city from the water. Discover the central canal area, or “Canal Belt,” which was built in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, gliding by 400 year old warehouses, mansions and historic churches.

Discover iconic museums and galleries

Amsterdam has museums and galleries for every interest. From the Van Gogh museum boasting the largest collection of paintings by the artist to Anne Frank's house, to lesser know gems such as Electric Ladyland, dedicated to flourescent art.

Bruges, Belgium

Cities don’t get much prettier than Bruges. Picture quaint cobbled lanes, fairy tale spires and mirror-like canals; a place where photogenic market squares give way to networks of secretive streets. Of course, don't forget to sample the region's signature beer and chocolate on a short cruise to Bruges.

Learn the art of chocolate making

Explore the charming old city of Ghent and delve into the history and production of the culinary staple it is most known for – chocolate. Best of all, you’ll be treated to a delicious tasting and demonstration.

Discover Bruges city highlights

Wander the streets of the old town, a UNESCO world heritage site, past the famous Belfry Tower and Market Square and Burg Square, the focal point of life in ancient Bruges. Climb all 366 steps to the top of the Belfry Bell Tower and be rewarded with panoramic views of the city.  For a different perspective sit back and relax as you weave through the city's canals to take in the sights.

Cycle to Damme

Begin your journey in the scenic city center before leaving the city behind to journey into the magnificent Flemish countryside. As you make your way to Damme near the Dutch border, you'll pass charming villages, ride under the shade of lush trees, admire countryside farms, and view Belgium's windmills.

Royal caribbean vs. carnival: quick comparison chart.

Decide which line is best based on costs, food, onboard entertainment and other key factors.

Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival

Royal Caribbean International and Carnival Cruise Line have quite a bit in common.

Trying to choose between Royal Caribbean and Carnival for your next cruise? Check out the comparison chart below, then read on for more details.

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas side by side at sea.

Winner: Royal Caribbean

When it comes to fleet size as well as the features available on cruise ships, Royal Caribbean has an edge over Carnival Cruise Line. That's because Royal Caribbean already has 28 ships in operation, including its incredible Oasis Class, Quantum Class and Quantum Ultra Class ships. Oasis Class vessels like Allure of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are some of the largest in the world – and Royal Caribbean Group is constantly rolling out new, even bigger cruise ships with better amenities and new features. For example, the new Icon of the Seas (scheduled to debut in 2024) plans to have the largest water park at sea, the largest swimming pool at sea, and a range of over-the-top cabins and suites for families of all sizes.

Meanwhile, Carnival currently operates 25 different vessels with a few more on the way. Newer ships like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia aren't as large and grand as Royal Caribbean ships, nor are the brand-new vessels the company is planning for late 2023 and 2024. For example, the new Carnival Jubilee that is set to begin sailing later in 2023 will have 15 passenger decks and capacity for up to 6,631 guests, compared to 18 guest decks and 7,600 passengers on Icon of the Seas.

Comparing cabins across cruise lines as a whole isn't an easy feat, mostly because companies tend to offer larger suites and cabins with a better layout on their newer ships . You'll therefore likely have a nicer cabin on one of Carnival's newest vessels compared to an older ship from Royal Caribbean, and of course the opposite is also true. Cabin sizes and layouts also vary widely across the vessels of both brands, and that's true even for basic interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.

That said, Royal Caribbean still comes out ahead in this category, since the line boasts more square footage in some of the most basic cabins as well as more over-the-top luxury accommodations, especially for families.

As an example, most inside cabins on Allure of the Seas feature 172 square feet of space, whereas Carnival Celebration's inside cabins are slightly smaller at 158 square feet. Meanwhile, the largest suites on Celebration are the Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, with 1,120 square feet of space including the balcony, and the Carnival Excel Aft Suite, which has 861 square feet of interior and balcony space. Compare those options to the Sky Loft Suites on Allure of the Seas, which feature 1,132 square feet across the room and balcony, and the spacious two-bedroom AquaTheater Suites with 1,595 square feet including the balcony.

Food options vary widely across vessels within any cruise brand, and this is especially true with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. For example, older ships from both cruise lines offer fewer specialty dining options overall along with the main dining rooms and buffet options cruisers come to expect, whereas newer ships from both lines feature a lot more unique and innovative options.

When you view the cruise dining options from both lines, you'll quickly find that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean pull out all the stops when it comes to food. For example, Carnival ships include a range of eateries from large and expansive buffets to main dining rooms to unique offerings like Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina. Meanwhile, specialty dining on Carnival vessels features options like teppanyaki, Emeril's Bistros at Sea and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Royal Caribbean ships feature convenient buffets and main dining room experiences, as well as included options like pizza kitchens, noodle bars and casual fast food. Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean ranges from the brand's Chef's Table experience to Johnny Rockets' burgers and shakes to innovative fine dining at Wonderland.

Drink packages

A group of friends enjoying drinks at Lime and Coconut on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer drink packages that cruisers can purchase as part of their vacation to get a more all-inclusive feel . Then again, the value of these packages depends on how much you drink over the course of your trip. Also note that the cost of drink packages across all cruise lines can vary depending on the ship, itinerary, travel dates, length of trip and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out slightly ahead in this category because the line offers three tiers of drink packages for guests with different needs. Choose from the Classic Soda Package; the Refreshment Package, which includes soda along with coffees, juices and even milkshakes at Johnny Rockets; and the Deluxe Beverage Package, which adds in beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Meanwhile, Carnival offers just two different drink packages: the Bottomless Bubbles package, which covers soft drinks and juice, and the Cheers! drink package, which adds in spirits and cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, specialty coffee, energy drinks and more.

Onboard activities

A waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Analyzing onboard activities across cruise lines isn't always easy – you really have to break down this category by ship for a true comparison. When you do that with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you'll find that both lines offer fun activities for all ages, from onboard water parks to hosted games, casinos and more.

That said, Royal Caribbean does take things up a notch in this category, especially on the line's newer ships. Some Royal Caribbean vessels offer escape rooms, surf simulators, zip lines, game shows and over-the-top water parks with incredible slides for thrill-seekers. For example, Freedom of the Seas boasts huge onboard waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, mini-golf and more. Don't forget about Icon of the Seas with its massive water park and pool offerings in the works. Meanwhile, standout activities on Carnival ships include Family Feud Live, onboard water parks and the thrilling SkyRide.

Live entertainment

"Ice Spectacular" show on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas.

The quality of cruise ship entertainment varies widely based on the quality of the talent booked for individual ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer their share of live music and entertainment, including performances by bands and singers, karaoke, and piano bars. Meanwhile, both lines also boast their own theaters on every vessel, which often feature Broadway-style shows, singing and dancing, comedy acts, and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out ahead in this category since its vessels feature award-winning musicals like "Hairspray," "Mamma Mia!" and "Cats." The open-air AquaTheater on Oasis Class ships also wows guests with incredible diving feats, stunts and aerial acrobatics. Some Royal Caribbean ships even have onboard ice skating performances and ice games.

Kids programming

Courtesy of Carnival Cruise Line

Winner: Carnival

Both cruise lines have kids clubs that cater to younger guests of all ages, with each one offering supervised care so parents can drop the kids off for some alone time or a quiet dinner on the ship. However, Carnival stands out slightly in this category due to the six different clubs offered across the fleet for children and teens between 6 months and 17 years old. Carnival also offers supervised Night Owls services for kids 11 and younger, which lets parents get out and have some late-night fun for an extra charge.

Royal Caribbean offers four kids clubs for children ages six months to 12, along with a separate club for tweens and teens . Supervised child care is available for free during the day, and you can opt for paid care after hours as well.

Adults-only offerings

A group of adults drinking and laughing at the Serenity Retreat on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras.

Both cruise lines offer their share of adults-only spaces and things to do, from onboard casinos to luxurious spas to bars that offer cocktails and live entertainment at all hours of the day and night. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer adults-only areas on some of their ships.

On Carnival, for example, cruisers will find the Serenity Adults-Only Retreat for sailors 21 and older with extra space and comfortable chairs for relaxation, along with its own bar nearby. On many Royal Caribbean vessels, on the other hand, the onboard Solarium for ages 16-plus has its own pool and extra space to find peace and quiet.

Carnival's Serenity relaxation area is included for guests. While Royal Caribbean's Solarium is typically also included, on certain sailings there is restricted access by fare class.

Shore excursions

Shore excursions offered by cruise lines are largely operated by third-party companies and are often the same across brands. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean boast a broad selection of excursions in destinations around the world, from snorkeling and scuba tours in the Caribbean to city tours, horseback riding, cooking classes and more.

Both cruise lines offer private and custom tours you can book through your ship as well.

Private island experiences

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival each have their own private island in the Bahamas , which is included in most itineraries to this part of the world. These private islands provide a fun beach escape for families to enjoy, whether you want to relax in the sun or take part in some of the available activities.

Royal Caribbean's private island, called Perfect Day at CocoCay, is the more impressive option due to everything it includes: a heart-thumping water park, its own wave pool, a zip line, a hot air balloon experience and overwater bungalows you can book for the day, among other offerings. Meanwhile, Carnival's Half Moon Cay has a unique beached pirate ship to explore – but fewer amenities overall.

Note that both private islands have plenty of beach space for guests to spread out and relax, as well as restaurants and bars. You can also book excursions on both private islands, which include activities like snorkeling and water sports.

Comparing costs across cruise lines can be tricky since fares and available sales vary throughout the year, as well as based on the vessel booked, the cruise itinerary, the number and age of travelers, and more. To get an idea of who wins on price, we looked for two similar cruises on comparable ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, then priced out an option for a family of four with two children ages 8 and 10. For the purpose of this comparison, we used seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises on Carnival Celebration and Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, both of which began sailing in 2022.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary from Miami stops in Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands . By comparison, the Wonder of the Seas sailing leaves from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten ; San Juan; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

The chart below shows the total cost (including taxes and fees) for a family of four in January 2024 in both an ocean view and a typical balcony cabin across both cruise lines. Note that, for the purpose of this comparison, we selected the least expensive room option in each category.

My Personas

Code: ∅.

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. These were my 8 favorite amenities on the world's largest cruise ship.

  • Royal Caribbean invited me to spend three complimentary nights on its new Icon of the Seas  in January.
  • My eight favorite amenities included the waterpark and jazz bar.
  • I've yet to see most of the amenities on my list on other cruise ships.

Insider Today

There's a reason Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship is only operating seven-night sailings .

The 1,196-foot-long, 20-deck Icon of the Seas is packed with bars, restaurants, and things to do. Any shorter of an itinerary, and you might not have time to experience all it has to offer.

If you're a frequent cruiser — especially with Royal Caribbean — amenities like the mini-golf course and water playground may not seem exciting.

But of all the activities the new world's largest cruise ship has to offer, my eight favorites are, for the most part, ones I've yet to see on another vessel.

Take a look at what made the cut.

1. The six-slide waterpark

mini cruises royal caribbean

It wouldn't be a roundup of Icon of the Seas' best amenities without a mention of its waterpark.

Plenty of family-friendly cruise ships have waterslides, but few have six — or even one that requires a multi-person raft.

However, if you don't like the feeling of your stomach dropping, I'd advise skipping the 46-foot-tall drop slide.

2. The adult-only suspended infinity pool

mini cruises royal caribbean

The 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas has seven pools and nine hot tubs. As a kid-fearing adult, I loved the grown-ups-only suspended infinity pool.

I spent my time there perched at one of its in-water loungers, contently splashing my legs around the water, wondering if I actually hated cruises.

While I would've preferred a quieter atmosphere (the DJ did not, in fact, play smooth jazz), the pool's views, day beds, and lack of screaming children were hard to beat.

3. The Crown’s Edge thrill 'ride'

mini cruises royal caribbean

There's no need to grab coffee before harnessing up for the part-zipling, part-agility Crown's Edge course. You'll be jolted awake when the floor drops from beneath your feet, leaving you dangling 154 feet above the ocean before the zipline kicks in.

Unfortunately, it comes with two costs: $49 and a spike of anxiety.

4. The 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Aqua Action!' shows

mini cruises royal caribbean

If you hate cruise shows, Icon of the Seas could make you change your mind.

The ship's riff on Broadway-approved "Wizard of Oz" — 16-piece live orchestra and flying bed included — delighted me, a hater of most musicals.

For something less traditional, the semi-circle AquaDome theater hosts a compelling multi-disciplinary swim, dive, and aerial show reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil.

It's the first show-at-sea I've seen with a waterfall and nine-foot-tall robotic arms, and so far, it's one of my favorites.

5. The live jazz bar

mini cruises royal caribbean

Ya like jazz? So do I.

Icon of the Seas has plenty of live music venues — including rowdy karaoke and dueling pianos bars, if that counts. But if you're a jazz fan or looking for a peaceful nightcap, none of these options will top the live music at Lou's Jazz 'n Blues.

6. The customizable Mediterranean-style wrap at the five-stall food hall

mini cruises royal caribbean

The mega-ship's food hall wasn't nearly as diverse or exciting as the one on Norwegian Prima .

But compared to the rest of my mediocre meals on Icon of the Seas — including dinner at a specialty restaurant — my complimentary pork pita wrap from the food hall's Mediterranean-inspired stall was admittedly pretty decent.

The Cava -like meal was balanced, succulent, and filling. Ending it with a strawberry nutella crepe from one of the vendors didn't hurt either.

7. The Pearl Café with sweeping ocean views

mini cruises royal caribbean

Everyone takes a picture inside the Pearl . But few people know that the best part about the glittering structure isn't what's inside it — it's what's behind it: the Pearl Café.

Admittedly, the food wasn't standout.

But it's 2024. In this era, we don't dine for food. We dine for vibes . And the Pearl Café was definitely "serving" (even with its mediocre sandwiches).

At first glance, I had snubbed the dining and lounge area as a rip-off of a generic airport coffee shop. But during my three days on Icon, I returned to the centrally located space more often than expected. It turns out it's a great place to get some work done.

8. The lounging pods that tower above passerbys

mini cruises royal caribbean

Speaking of vibes, if you're looking for a secluded place to drink (as in, not the swim-up pool bar), few will top the Overlook Pods, perched just behind the AquaDome.

If you want to feel like you're drinking in a nest atop a tree, bring your coffee-infused cocktail from nearby Rye and Bean to one of the elevated pods. .

Just don't drink too much. What goes up must come down. And to get down from the pods, you'll have to take the stairs.
