These irons are surprising pleasant, with respect to distance, feel and ball flight. It’s easy to see older, better players graduate to this set once their skills diminish away from blades. Or up-and-comers who want to shed their thick cavity backs and get something more appropriate for their blossoming game.

Distance-oriented clubs with bells and whistles, these also deliver accuracy and solid feel for a gamut of skill levels. And at a nice price.

The wider sole and thicker top line may not visually appealing to better players.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C521 Irons Review

The official word from Tour Edge: these are high-tech distance irons with enhanced forgiveness for competitive golfers. Going out on a short limb, we say that’s spot on.

They’re cavity backs that can achieve similar results to clubs at the top end of the market. While Tour Edge doesn’t call them players’ distance irons like other brands, that’s essentially what they are. Yet they will have a broader appeal to mid-handicaps, as well.

Tour-Edge-Hot-Launch-C521-iron-web

They’re designed to be all about maxing out distance and forgiveness. They’re made with a soft stainless steel that helps dampen impact vibration, as well.

An expanded undercut cavity moves more weight back in each clubhead. That adds forgiveness, shot trajectory, power and consistent performance. The high MOI improves shot dispersion, too, which will help shots find their target more often.

In fact, weight out at the toe elongates the sweet spot, so more of your mis-hits will feel and perform as if you hit the bullseye. Plus, a wide sole lowers the CG, which translates to cleaner, more-consistent impact with less digging into the ground.

These are traditionally shaped, with plenty of face height that gives you confidence at address. The top line is a little bit thick, but the edges are beveled and that somehow makes it look more elegant and high-end.

Our testing revealed a few things. First, impact feel is outstanding - emitting a solid and crisp thud. Second, it’s easy to see that the clubs immediately try to be forgiving on every shot - the norm is clearly a beautifully straight ball flight, with just a little bit of draw at the end.

Speaking of, there’s a slightly noticeable offset that should appeal to most players. Finally, Tour Edge made this set with stronger lofts. So getting distance is not an issue. It’s available as a seven-piece set.

Tour Edge Hot Launch 521 E and C Series Irons and Wedges

Tour Edge Hot Launch 521 E and C Series Irons – Key Takeaways

  • Tour Edge has released two new game-improvement irons – Hot Launch E521 and C521.
  • The Hot Launch E521 irons are designed to offer extreme launch and forgiveness.
  • The Hot Launch C521 irons are designed around competition specifications.
  • Retail price for the E521 is $89.99 per club . C521 is $69.99 per club.

The Tour Edge 521 irons give golfers two choices in the ever-popular game-improvement segment of the market. Continuing the identity of its Hot Launch line, the defining characteristics are value and performance with just enough choice to satisfy the target clientele.

In that vein, Tour Edge believes not all game-improvement golfers are cut from the same cloth. Slower swing-speed players who need every last drop of technology to help increase launch to access more distance will be best served by the E Series extreme-spec E521 Iron-Wood model.

Conversely, the Tour Edge C-series C521 provides medium (or thereabouts) swing-speed players a more “traditional” looking iron. Tour Edge describes the C521 as classically shaped though it’s fair to suggest that self-appointed adjectives are subjective and relative to the product category. To be clear, the so-called conventional geometry of the Tour Edge C521 is a bit like describing a hot dog as the quintessential tube-steak.

It’s contextually accurate.

With that out of the way, let’s zoom in on some finer points of each offering.

review tour edge c521 irons

Tour Edge E521 Iron-Wood

As with the rest of the Hot Launch line, the “E” stands for “Extreme.” According to Tour Edge, “extreme” is characterized by “a super-low center of gravity (CG), super-shallow faces, offset designs and extremely light premium shafts designed to get the ball launching in the air with ease for slower to mid-tempo swing speed players.”

Basically the array one would expect from any game-improvement set of irons.

As for the term “iron-wood,” Tour Edge asserts that it coined the phrase describing hollow-body irons in 1999. The purpose is similar to that of competing hybrid-irons such as the Cleveland UHX: hybrid-like performance from clubs with lofts traditionally defined as irons.

review tour edge c521 irons

Hollow Body

The purpose of the 17-4 stainless-steel hollow body is straightforward. The design allows for a thinner face (increased ball speeds) and a low/rear CG placement. Redistributing weight away from the geometric center and around the perimeter helps increase the moment of inertia (forgiveness). A shallow face and heel-biased weighting mitigate the left-right ball flight that plagues so many less-accomplished players.

Professional instruction would accomplish the same. Unfortunately, most golfers who like the sound of a $90 per club club price tag arent’t inclined to spend at least that for one lesson.

E521 HOUDINI SOLE

I get it. Those tasked with finding catchy names for keystone technologies ride a fine line. Too generic and no one notices. Too hyperbolic and it lacks credibility. Tour Edge’s Houdini Sole just feels like it was the product at a meeting where everyone was trying a bit too hard.

At face value, the Houdini Sole is characterized by a more rounded leading-edge mass concentrated low/rear in the clubhead. Compared to the HL4 iron-wood , Tour Edge says the weight is 10 percent lower and 15 percent more rearward.

Given this, short of pulling a rabbit out of a hat or walking through a brick wall, I’m not sure the Houdini Sole is going to spawn any on-course illusions.

What it should do is help produce cleaner turf interaction when you catch a shot a little heavy (hit behind the ball).

TOUR EDGE E521 SET OPTIONS

The E521 iron-wood is offered as a seven-piece set and is available in both right and left hand.

Twelve discrete lofts allow golfers an a la carte combo-set option as well.

The stock shafts are KBS Max 80 (steel) and Mitsubishi Fubuki HD (graphite) 50-60 gram, depending on flex.

TOUR EDGE C521

Quoting Tour Edge’s product literature, “The C Series features premium, state-of-the-art Competition Spec designs with a higher MOI in classically shaped clubs that provide medium-plus swing speeds the ability to launch the ball easily and with added forgiveness and power across the face.”

There’s a good bit to unpack here but it really starts with the whole “Competition Spec” label.

The C521 is the less game-improvement model of the two options. However, it’s probably a reach to think that seriously competitive golfers will opt for this set as opposed to the myriad choices on the market.

review tour edge c521 irons

That’s not a knock on the capabilities of Tour Edge C521. It’s more so that Tour Edge is depicting the C521 as something of a “better player” iron, using arguably contrived language.  If anything, this approach could take away from what otherwise is an aggressively priced option with more than sufficient performance for the intended customer.

Tour Edge bills the “incredibly soft” 431 stainless steel material as ideal for generating an “optimal feel.” I haven’t hit the C521 irons so, at this point, everything is theoretical. Moreover, I’m not a metallurgist and I didn’t sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night. That said, typically such accolades are reserved for one-piece forged irons and materials like 1025 carbon steel (hello, Mizuno and Srixon). It’s entirely possible that the Tour Edge C521 feels remarkably soft. Or perhaps the sensation at impact is thin and harsh. On balance, it’s probably somewhere in between.

C521 DESIGN

As opposed to the hollow-body E521 Iron-Wood, the defining characteristic of the C521 is an undercut cavity. The purpose of the cavity, whether external or internal, is roughly the same: remove weight and redistribute it in a more advantageous location. Again, with game-improvement equipment, that translates as additional perimeter weighting to increase MOI and/or shifting CG to moderate launch conditions. Specific to the C521, Tour Edge puts the number at a 10-percent increase in MOI over the previous HL4 model.

CHAMFERING?

You’re forgiven if you think this term feels out of place. It’s not. This bit of visual trickery involves beveling edges to produce a certain aesthetic. With golf clubs, it usually involves making a topline appear thinner than it really is. The benefit is a more compact look at address which is preferred by, dare I say, more competitive golfers.

review tour edge c521 irons

TOUR EDGE C521 SET OPTIONS

The C521 iron model is offered as a seven-piece set in both right and left hand.

It also comes as a pre-packaged combo set including two C521 hybrids and five C521 irons.

The stock shafts are KBS Max 80 (steel) and Aldila Rogue (graphite) 55-65 grams depending on flex.

The retail price is $69.99 each (steel or graphite).

FITTING AND 48-HOUR DELIVERY PROMISE

Tour Edge will have 850 fitting locations nationwide which allow for a 48-hour delivery to anywhere in the continental United States. Custom fitting is a loaded term but suffice it to say the experience won’t be as in-depth or resource-intensive (time and money) as what you’ll find at True Spec, Cool Clubs or Club Champion. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, given the likely demographics of the average Hot Launch E521 or C521 irons target audience, it’s probably a good thing.

HOT LAUNCH E521 WEDGES

Golfers who opt for the Hot Launch E521 Iron-Wood will likely look to complete the set with matching wedges. At least that’s what Tour Edge is betting on. There’s an element of common sense here. If your game can benefit from wider soles,  perimeter weighting, and a boost in forgiveness with your irons, why not stick to the same game plan with your wedges?

review tour edge c521 irons

The chief characteristic of the Hot Launch E521 wedges is the Houdini Sole. Tour Edge claims the wide sole and undercut cavity reduces turf interaction by 35 percent. Translation: this wedge won’t dig. Also, with more mass concentrated low/rear, it should help golfers who struggle to get wedge shots airborne and forward. It’s easy for better players to forget how challenging it is to hit something other than a skull or chili-dip off a difficult lie.

A larger overall footprint boosts MOI (forgiveness). While some might feel a bigger club is harder to mishit, I’d side with those who suggest that club-turf interaction is king. Every wedge can do something but there isn’t a single wedge that does everything. The high-bounce E521 should help less-skilled golfers navigate bunkers and dicey lies around the green. The primary downside to such a wedge design is that it’s not ideal for dealing with tight lies. But there’s a good chance the target customer isn’t looking to add a Phil Mickelson flop shot to the arsenal any time soon.

The E521 wedge is available in 52-, 56- and 60-degree lofts in both right and left hand.

The stock shafts are KBS Max 80  Uniflex (steel) and Mitsubishi Fubuiki HD (graphite) 55-60 grams depending on flex.

SOMETHING TO CHEW ON

The context of this release for Tour Edge is intriguing. The first part of 2020 was, from a retail point of view, pretty forgettable. But if there’s a silver lining, it might be that more people are interested in picking up the game. And if you’re going to play golf, you’re going to need golf equipment.

Prior to all of this,  Tour Edge seemed poised with a solution for consumers who weren’t motivated by $500-plus drivers and $1,400 sets of irons. While other equipment manufacturers started touting a value-first mantra, Tour Edge wanted to remind consumers that this has always been something of a sweet spot for the brand.

Hot Launch may not get the equipment gear heads setting calendar reminders. However, it will likely have a tremendous amount to do with Tour Edge’s financial picture in 2021.

If you’re the golfer whose favorite part of new releases is the inevitable price-reduction on the previous generation of clubs, you’re in luck. The Tour Edge HL4 line is already on sale .

The new Tour Edge Hot Launch 521 E and C Series irons are available beginning Nov. 1.

I am playing the C521 in graphite. Switched over from steel irons. I am hitting these clubs 20+ years further than my steel irons. (8 iron 160 yds). High ball flight, ball comes off the face like butter. Best Irons I have ever hit and I have hit them all.

Ol'pal Gary

Like Chuck, i’m in my 70’s with a few disabilities, i’m still trying to get my swing & game close to where it was, before Heart Attack, Hip Replacement, Neuropathy & a few others messed me up. I’ve got the Exotic Driver & 3 wood but as i’m a Lefty irons are very hard to come by. I even wrote to the company why i couldn’t find any Left hands irons in Exotic or even Top line Hot Launch C 521 or E 521 . It’s been quite some time ago & they didn’t get back to me. So i took that to mean they weren’t interested in selling to Left Handers. Both of these offering could find a spot in my bag along with the TE Driver & 3 wood. Chuck you keep on improving your game, i sure will. i just bought a full set of callaway Mavriks & still trying to adjust to them !!

Mike Romano

I too am a senior left-hander. It’s amazing how neglected the left-handed golfer is by equipment manufacturers.

If you think it is tough finding left handed clubs for men, try looking for clubs for a left handed female golfer.

Chuck Worgull

I have played with Tour Edge iron’s for the past 20 plus years. I think it might be time to upgrade. As I am 77 years young, I can’t hit my driver’s 275yrds now, but I can still get it out around 220, and I also have a couple of disability. Neuropathy in my feet which has screwed up my balance and C-3, C-4 & C-5 with six screws plates between 3-4 & 4-5.0. I was an 8 handicap, now I am a 15. I would like to get back to at least a 10 – 12. Do you think that it’s possible?? Thanks for reading about my problems. Chuck

Tour Edge C521 Irons Review 2023 – Are They A Good Choice for High Handicappers?

review tour edge c521 irons

“Just one look at the Tour Edge C521 and you’ll know that you are dealing with game improvement irons.”

The Tour Edge C521 irons are marketed towards “competitive players.” And we can see that the company took steps towards making these irons look better to distinguishing players. But we wanted to see exactly what they have to offer high handicappers and better players.

So we tested the Tour Edge C521 irons. In the following review, you will find out everything you need to know about these clubs.

Tour Edge C521 Irons Overview

“The Tour Edge C521’s are cavity back irons with toe weighting.”

When you look at the Tour Edge C521 irons, you can see that they will be forgiving. That’s because the heel to toe length is pretty long. The cavity undercut is also pretty deep and juts out behind the head quite a bit. This creates a distinct profile at address: you can see the undercut sticking out and you know that you will have a lot of leeway on lateral mis-hits.

The top line is also moderately thick. The face near the top is actually beveled so that it sort of blends into the top line. This design factor gives the Tour Edge C521’s a nice, clean look at address; but keep in mind that the topline is still not exactly thin.

Overall, the Tour Edge C521 irons look beefy and forgiving at address – great for high handicappers. One thing that we noticed during testing was that toe-side mis-hits in particular were flying very straight. We suspect that this is the result of the toe weighting and expanded toe area. The launch of the Tour Edge C521 irons is also high and effortless. If you are a deliberate tempo swinger, you will likely do very well with the launch window of these irons.

“With an expansive sweet spot and large face profile, it’s very easy to improve striking accuracy with these irons. While the feedback and workability suffer, the forgiveness is outstanding.”

Are the Tour Edge C521 Irons Forgiving?

“The head profile of these irons is enough to make them very forgiving.”

And with the addition of a deep undercut cavity, the Tour Edge C521 irons are ideal if you are looking for forgiving irons. Another design aspect that needs to be brought up is the wide sole.

The sole profile reminds us a lot of the Taylormade M4 irons: it’s rounded out and extended towards the back of the head. This contributes to the high and easy launch but it also smooths out turf interaction.

In fact, our testers who are prone to chunking were finding it very easy to make clean contact. The offset is also considerable so players who struggle to close the face up will have an easier time with these irons. The Tour Edge C521’s encourage straight flight and high launch.

The CG also feels nice and low so these irons are comfortable to swing. By elongating the cavity undercut, Tour Edge also managed to manipulate the CG towards the back of the head. This increases MOI which means even more forgiveness on off-center strikes.

The low CG balances the “power loft” specs pretty well. At no point did we feel the danger of ballooning out of control. Yet, launch was high enough to increase carry distance for most of our testers.

Would the Tour Edge C521 Irons Be Good for High Handicappers?

“The Tour Edge C521 irons are excellent for high handicappers.”

In fact, these irons may only be good for high handicappers. There isn’t enough workability or feedback produced by these irons to make them viable for mid or low handicappers. But for newbies, the Tour Edge C521 irons offer the “ease of use” and confidence to start lowering your score.

Tour Edge C521 Irons

Category: Game Improvement Irons

Tour edge c521 first impressions.

review tour edge c521 irons

“We were struck by how much these irons resemble the Taylormade M4’s.”

They perform like the M4’s as well. With the Tour Edge C521’s you can scoop the ball out of the rough or semi-rough with ease. You also can’t help but notice the profile. The blades are long, the topline is considerable and the soles are chunky.

It’s very hard to get a draw or hook out of these irons. Only the most severe mis-hits will produce such a shot. And that’s not great if you’re looking to manipulate the ball on holes where you need to thread the needle. But that’s not what these irons were built for. They were built to play straight and launch within a reasonable window.

Through that purview, the Tour Edge C521 irons perform exactly the way they’re supposed to. We were also surprised that they were so consistent. Again, workability and feedback are almost non-existent; but you can count on straight flight and consistent launch from pretty much any lie.

“To any high handicapper, the Tour Edge C521 will be a welcome sight as they practically scream forgiveness.”

Tour Edge C521 Pros

  • Considerable offset
  • They play smooth in the rough
  • Easy launch
  • Very forgiving
  • Straight flight

Who Are the Tour Edge C521 Irons for?

review tour edge c521 irons

“The Tour Edge C521 irons are for the player that needs help staying on the fairway.”

They are also great for high handicap players who need to improve their striking accuracy. Overall, this is a great set of irons for beginners because they’re not that expensive and they will make learning the iron game a lot easier.

Of course, these won’t be the irons you game forever. If you really stick with golf and practice consistently, you will probably outgrow these irons after 2-3 seasons. That being said, these are still excellent irons for beginners and high handicappers. They will flatten the dreaded iron learning curve and help you score more GIR’s as a high handicapper.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C521 iron, E521 Iron-Woods, wedges

review tour edge c521 irons

Tour Edge’s new Hot Launch 521 line of clubs gives golfers two distinct options when it comes to game improvement technologies. The C521 series designed to “Competition Spec” to offer more traditional-looking clubs packed with technology and the E521 series packed with “Extreme forgiveness” to help golfers looking for maximum game improvement.

Along with the drivers , fairway woods , and hybrids , the lines are rounded out with the C521 irons along with the E521 IronWoods and wedges. When you put it all together, the entire line offers 46 different lofts of clubs in right-handed and 20 lofts in left-handed, making it the single biggest launch of clubs it Tour Edge’s history.

“We see these two series as being the best value available in the custom fitting market and that’s exactly why we created our 48-hour custom fitting delivery guarantee. We want to open up the flood gates to custom fitting to golfers who are looking for the  latest in innovation and extremely high performance at logical prices.”  – David Glod, founder of Tour Edge

Tour Edge C521 Irons

review tour edge c521 irons

The Hot Launch C521 irons come packed with everything you would expect from a game-improvement set of irons along with a few extras. They are made from extremely soft 431 stainless steel to provide tour-level feel as well as the ability to be adjusted for lie and loft easily. This means greater opportunity for custom fitting.

Now speaking to custom fitting and additional options, the C521 irons will also be available in a stock combo set configuration that includes two Hot Launch C521 hybrids.

Technology and design characteristics

Undercut Cavity:  Undercut cavities are a staple in the game improvement iron category and the C Series expanded undercut design helps generate better ball speeds around the face, especially on mishits. The deep undercut cavity also allows for the face to be made thinner which gives designers the ability to move more weight to the sole and help boost the MOI. According to Tour Edge, the MOI of the C521 irons has increased 10 percent compared to the previous model resulting in better dispersion.

Wide Sole Design:  The sole is 15-percent wider than the previous Hot Launch irons for a lower center of gravity. The wide yet newly cambered sole offers improved turf interaction for more consistent shot-making from good lies and bad.

Chamfered Face:  Don’t feel bad, I had to look this up too. To “chamfer” is to ease/reduce sharp edges—in other words, it’s a different way of saying bevel or rounding, which are more common terms in golf club design. The chamfered face around the topline and leading edge give designers the ability to create a bigger clubface for added forgiveness without compromising the looks of the irons.

Power Lofts:  To help golfers gain extra distance and achieve a more desirable trajectory, the C Series irons have been power-lofted, but thanks to the lower center of gravity afforded by the wide soles, the C521’s still maintain higher launch angles. These higher-launching, lower-spinning shots result in steeper angles of descent to help hold greens from longer distances.

E521 Iron-woods

review tour edge c521 irons

For those not familiar, Tour Edge and its hollow body iron-woods have been helping golfers get the most out of their game since 1999. They combine fairway wood and hybrid technology into a controllable and forgiving iron design.

By using the same strong 17-4 stainless steel as the Hot Launch E521 fairway woods and hybrids, designers are able to achieve extremely low centers of gravity to make them some of the most forgiving clubs on the market—and compete with clubs more than twice their price.

Technology and design

Houdini Sole Technology:  The Hot Launch E521 Iron-Woods offer the same Houdini Sole design as the driver, fairway metals, and hybrids to improve turf interaction by 35 percent and boost forgiveness. According to Tour Edge, the center of gravity is 10-percent lower and 15-percent further back compared to the previous HL4 iron-woods, which makes the E521’s the highest launching and easiest-to-hit Iron-Woods they have ever made.

review tour edge c521 irons

The key element of the Houdini design is its sharply curved leading edge which has proven to be extremely effective in helping get shots into the air, even from the toughest lies.

“The Houdini Sole becomes a complete life-saver from tight and tough lies,”-  David Glod, Tour Edge founder and lead designer

Hollow-Body:  The hollow-body design brings with it the ability to create metal wood properties in a small and more compact iron shape. The achieved perimeter weighting creates an extremely low center of gravity and really helps golfers on the medium to lower end of the speed spectrum the opportunity to achieve a powerful ball flight.

Cup Forged Face:  The super-thin forged face helps increase overall ball speed around the clubface resulting in higher peak heights, and distance to make it easy to hold greens from longer distances.

Slice-Fighting Offset:  When it works it works and offset is a proven way to help golfers reduce or eliminate the dreaded slice. When paired with the heel bias weighting of the head, you can expect to see less of the right side of the course—or the left side for you lefties out there.

E521 Wedges

review tour edge c521 irons

The Hot Launch E521 Wedge features a super-wide sole that pushes as much weight low in the head as possible to make it easy to get the ball up in the air and stop shots faster around the greens.

The dual-flange Houdini sole offers an abundance of bounce (14 degrees) to allow the wedge to get through almost any lie without the fear of digging or chunking shots. The E521 wedges are available individually or as part of the Hot Launch E521 Iron-Wood set and come in a gap, sand, and lob wedge.

Houdini Sole:  The Houdini Sole with its aggressively curved leading edge reduces turf interaction by 35 percent. This helps the wedges glide through even the toughest lies and significantly reduces “duffs and chunks,” per Tour Edge.

Extra Large Face Design:  Thanks to a deep undercut cavity that increases forgiveness, the wedge faces are able to be made oversized to create an overall larger striking area. This means that shots missed further around the face maintain more ball speed and end up on the green instead of coming up short.

Maximized Grooves:  The grooves of the E521 wedges are maximized to USGA depth and sharpness to provide maximum spin and control.

Rory mcilroy spotted testing a new taylormade “proto” 4-iron at the 2024 valero texas open.

Now just what do we have here?

On Wednesday at the 2024 Valero Texas Open, GolfWRX.com spotted Rory McIlroy testing a new, mysterious TaylorMade “PROTO” 4-iron.

review tour edge c521 irons

Clearly, the 4-iron is a prototype, but since it doesn’t say “Rors Proto” or “RM” on it, then maybe it’s a prototype for an upcoming iron release from TaylorMade. Or, maybe it’s an upgrade for a previous or existing iron model from the company.

For reference, the photo below shows what McIlroy’s previous P760 4-iron looks like…

review tour edge c521 irons

If the new prototype was an upgrade on the former P760 design, that would certainly be a large design departure, aesthetically speaking. It’s not impossible, but the new proto definitely looks significantly different.

McIlroy’s new proto – aesthetically, at least – looks more similar to TaylorMade’s P7MC irons, a model that Collin Morikawa uses for his 5 and 6-irons, as pictured below.

review tour edge c521 irons

The new proto is also reminiscent of TaylorMade’s old P750 and P770 irons:

review tour edge c521 irons

So what could McIlroy’s new TaylorMade “Proto” be? Is it a one-off prototype for McIlroy? Is it a re-design of an older model? Is it a harbinger of a bigger release in the future?

What is it?!

Unfortunately, TaylorMade hasn’t yet commented publicly on the prototype iron, so for now, we wait. And enjoy the photos of McIlroy testing it on Wednesday in San Antonio.

Here’s what it looks like from address…

review tour edge c521 irons

And here’s what McIlroy’s numbers looked like while testing it on the range…

review tour edge c521 irons

Uhh, yeah. Those are pretty good 4-iron numbers.

Will McIlroy make the switch into the new prototype 4-iron this week? That remains to be seen, but it should be noted that it was the only 4-iron in his bag on Wednesday.

*We’ll update this post as further information becomes available

Tour Edge Hot Launch 524 irons and wedges: What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Tour Edge C524 Irons.png

What you need to know: Tour Edge’s Hot Launch C524 irons and wedges are designed for golfers who prefer a more classic cavity-back design. The E524 irons and wedges provide plenty of help by focusing on ease of getting the ball up in the air or, in the case of the wedges, out of the sand.

Price/Availability: The Hot Launch C524 irons and wedges cost $80 per iron while the E523 irons and wedges go for $100 per club. All will be at retail stores on March 1.

3 Cool Things

1. Feel is the deal

While generally a more traditional cavity-back design, the 431 stainless-steel C524’s wide sole helps on heavier hits while the 360-degree undercut in the cavity works with extra mass in the toe to enhance moment of inertia for better performance on off-center strikes while promoting face flex.

The company also continued down the path of using its VIBRCOR high-grade thermoplastic urethane to enhance feel and promote a pleasing sound. The TPU—10 percent more than in the C523—is placed in the deep undercut pocket to boost perimeter weighting for forgiveness while bolstering speed and enhancing feel.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Tour Edge E524 iron.png

2. Ready for launch

The E524 hollow-body hybrid irons offer help in a different way, promoting higher launch and draw bias. The company has also taken an aggressive approach to turf interaction by using its “Houdini sole” employed in some of its fairway woods and hybrids to effectively cut through the ground. The raised mass at the rear of the clubhead also helps lower the CG, assisting launch.

The irons also employ a shallow face height to encourage higher launch while the hollow-body design takes that a step further by placing weight low. The offset design helps counter the slice to some degree, as well. All this comes in a new shape that is slightly longer front to back but with a thinner topline.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Tour Edge C524 Wedge.png

3. Wedges that work

The Hot Launch irons extend to C524 and E524 wedges. The C524 uses 20 percent more thermoplastic urethane in the undercut pocket to dampen unwanted vibrations. Extra weight in the toe portion of the club expands the sweet spot and assists shots struck high on the face. The wedges are available in lofts of 50 to 60 degrees in two-degree increments.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/08/Tour Edge E524 Wedge.png

The E524 wedges feature a wide, Houdini sole designed to make bunker escape a breeze. The sole has been slightly slimmed with more camber added to make it less of a specialty wedge. The deep undercut in the cavity back design frees up the extra mass that's moved low to provide a higher launch while full-face grooves provide plenty of grab on shots around the green. The wedges are available in lofts of 52, 56 and 60 degrees.

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons defy easy categorization.  They look like a game improvement iron but have the sound and feel of a players iron.  Performance is an enticing blend of forgiveness, speed, and shot shaping capability.

review tour edge c521 irons

Introduction

I recently shared a podcast where I discussed how damaging it can be to put clubs into strict categories [listen HERE ].  The Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons are a wonderful example of that concept.  No matter what your first glance impression of this iron is, I guarantee that it’s missing something big.

Check out the new TEE C722 Irons HERE

review tour edge c521 irons

Per Tour Edge, the C721 irons have a “player preferred competition shape” and a “thinner top line that creates maximum confidence at address.”  To my eye, the C721 irons are a good looking game improvement iron .  The top line is average in width – not the biggest I’ve seen but definitely not slim.  There is some offset but not enough to turn away better players.  The sole width is a touch thinner than average for a GI iron.

In the bag, the Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons have the understated look that most OEMs are chasing this year.  There’s almost no color, and the branding is largely confined to the toe.

Compared to its brother, the E721 [full review HERE ] , the C721 is thinner in the top line and sole and has noticeably less offset.

review tour edge c521 irons

Sound & Feel

The back of the C721 irons say “VIBRCOR” near the heel.  This technology is definitely worthy of this prominent shout out.  This is a hollow body iron that feels anything but hollow .  Impact is extremely quiet, producing a low-pitched “snap.”   That sound is paired with a feel that is exceptionally solid.

The sound and feel pairing were my first clue that this iron would defy easy categorization.  If I were hitting shots blindfolded, there’s no doubt I would have predicted this to be a demanding players iron.

Performance

Over the last few years, one of the more prominent trends in irons is adding distance through low spin.  While dropping spin is a fine way to add yards, it can be detrimental to the golfer who wants their approach shots to hold the green.  With the C721 irons, Tour Edge Exotics has shown that you can make an iron very long without giving up workability and shot-stopping power .

When I started testing the C721 irons, the first thing that jumped out to me was the ball speed.  Thanks to TEE’s Diamond Face 2.0, hollow body design, and the L-Cup Face, the ball absolutely screams off the center of the club face and retains nearly all its speed on mishits, too.  The result of all this speed is big time distance – about ten yards longer than my gamers in the mid-irons.

As I continued testing, I started noticing that the C721 irons were creating spin on par with my gamers.  This was not what I expected from an iron creating this kind of distance with this level of forgiveness – but I loved it.  With the C721, a skilled player can hit the ball a long way and shape their shots and get their ball to stick on firm putting surfaces .  That’s an exciting combination.

review tour edge c521 irons

It is worth noting that the C721 irons do have slightly stronger lofts throughout the set .  For me, the distance gapping worked well from the 5 iron through the gap wedge.  As a low launching player, there was a meaningful gap between the 4 and 5 irons only when I hit the 4I very well.  For all players, I strongly recommend working with a fitter to get the set make up that will create meaningful distance gaps with your swing.

Tour Edge Exotics continues to offer a great array of stock shafts with recommendations based on your swing speed .  For the slower swinger, they suggest the KBS TGI Tour Graphite.  The mid and high speed swingers can choose between the Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX in graphite or the True Temper Elevate 95 in steel.  Each of these shafts is offered in multiple flexes for a precise fit.

review tour edge c521 irons

If, like me, you’re tired of irons chasing distance through unplayably low spin, you need to check out the Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons.  This set provides plenty of distance and forgiveness while still allowing you to shape shots and hold the green.

Sounds like a great iron to try. I really like Tour Edge quality products. If I hadn’t bought my 0211 with my military discount first, at such a good price .I would have bought these irons for sure.

' src=

I own probably 15 sets of torrent exotic clubs along with my other 45 or 50 sets I’m a club junkie played too many tours for years getting older but I still love to just buy them even if I just look at them I got the c721 irons the drivers I have probably 10 15 of their drivers and three woods and hybrid theory incredible as long if not better than most everything out there they’re incredible clubs give them a try at their golf bags are incredible everything about them is top of the line for a fair price they’ll compete with anything especially Callaway and TaylorMade and they’re better than Cobra by a long shot trying you’ll love them great price great performance

' src=

I. 1/2 long 1 degree up can I get these irons tgi shafts I’m 66 years old need distance played on sunbelt senior tour

' src=

Yes, Tour Edge can build these irons to those specs.

' src=

From the article written, this sounds like a contender to players who are competitive and are slowing down due to aging and loss of distance instilled by nature. Beautiful lines on this product

' src=

Matt… I’m a 2hdcp low spin player like yourself looking for a bit more distance, height and spin. Seven iron ss for me is usually 83-86mph. Which shaft brand/weight/flex did you use for this review ? Sounds like the results of distance, enhanced spin, shaping shots and holding greens was a winner for you (and maybe even me). Great review and thank you in advance.

I used the Elevate 95 VSS.

' src=

Matt, On the face of it, having read your reviews of the Apex 21 and the Exotics C721 irons, they seem quite comparable, except for a higher spin with the Exotics? Were they comparable in carry distance and descent angles? I’m currently using the Apex 21’s with senior shafts, but still frequently have difficulty holding greens with the longer irons because of lower than optimal ball flight. I’m wondering if the higher spinning Exotics may help with this, or whether any differences will be negligible. Fitting is not an option where I currently live.

The objective differences between these irons is not huge. It’s going to come down to player/club interaction (fit), so I can’t tell you if one will spin meaningfully more than the other for you.

' src=

Do the c721 irons come in left hand?

I don’t see that option on their website.

Tour Edge Exotics C721 Irons Review

Tour edge exotics c721 irons.

These irons recently popped up all over the place after golf-legend John Daly put a full set of the new Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons in his bag the week of the 2021 Insperity Invitational on the Champions Tour. Then he almost won the tournament. (He finished T-2 after an unfortunate water ball.) The innovative C721 (“C” stands for “competitive”) irons are a first of its kind from Tour Edge and designed to be a player’s distance iron with more traditional looks and great feel. By introducing Diamond Face 2.0 and the new VIBRCOR technology to their irons, Tour Edge has truly taken another big leap in their modern club designs.

Looks 7

“Player’s distance irons” is always a bit of a weird category for me. In theory, the irons are supposed to have a lot of game improvement (GI) features, but with the look and feel of a player’s iron. In my opinion, it’s hard to really accomplish both of those things and recreate a “blade” look by any means. That said, I want a more compact head length from heel to toe, a nice shape, minimal offset, and nothing more than a medium topline. That’s exactly how I’d describe Tour Edge’s C721 irons. You’re not going to mistake them for the EXS Pro blades , but the head length and offset is moderate. Right between the player’s and GI categories in my opinion. I’d put the topline on the medium side, but it has a nice roll to it so it doesn’t come off as bulky.

If you’re a tenured player’s distance iron golfer, you know this what you should expect. From that perspective, the C721 irons are a really good looking “PDI” iron . Rather than make the “shiny parts” polished chrome, they have a more matte finish to reduce glare and wear better over time. While a very contemporary look, the aesthetic is tasteful and dare I say it…somewhat elegant. The branding is very smooth and clean.

Feel 12

How Does it Feel?

Like I said before, the Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons really are a first for the brand. While companies have had success utilizing “materials injected into hollow irons” for a bit now, the C721 is Tour Edge’s first. Tour Edge placed their “VIBRCOR” TPU material into two different places of the hollow head so the feel is cleaner and more “pure”. Without this material the head would feel extremely metallic and empty due to the hollow body.

Also contributing to the C721 irons’ feel is another first – Diamond Face 2.0 technology. To date, Tour Edge has only utilized this technology in metalwoods (to great success, I might add), but this the first we’ve seen it in irons. There are 92 diamond shapes of three different thicknesses behind the face to make it more forgiving with a bigger sweet spot and higher ball speeds. Put the Diamond Face together with the VIBRCOR and you get an extremely lively, powerful, and clean feeling iron with plenty of face response .

I’m telling you, this face has great feedback for this style of iron and is generous over much more of the hitting surface. While I won’t sit here and tell you it feels like a forged muscle back, it feels like a solid head that will give you what you need to hit everything from a high draw to a soft butter cut from some hard pan under an old tree. Not that I’d know anything about that…

How Does it Sound?

VIBRCOR also plays a huge role in the sound of the Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons. Without a foam/resin material to dampen these hollow heads, the clubs would sound super empty and more like a metalwood than an iron. And it’s not as simple as injecting just any foam or resin into the head. You have to make sure the blend is just right to optimize feel and sound, and durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of hitting golf balls. So if I think about it, the material has to be somewhat soft and flexible to handle impact, but firm enough to feel like a somewhat solid iron with a good sound.

Ok, I’ll get to the point. Based on utilizing the VIBRCOR injection, the C721 irons naturally have a sound that’s a muted, yet firm and tight, “thwap/whap” . Ease up a bit and it becomes a muted “tick”. It’s a good clean sound. Because of the Diamond Face 2.0 design, the sound is pretty consistent across the face. The extreme misses will sound a little dead, but that’s to be expected with any iron. That said, the dead zone is pleasantly minimal with the C721s (wait until we talk about the E721 irons…). Overall it’s a good solid sound that gives you the feedback you’re looking for.

On-Course Performance

The Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons are every bit of a player’s distance irons, no question. They’re LONG and powerful. My flight was super easy to control with the wind to the point that it was almost a non-factor unless the gusts were massive. My stock shot was a piercing flight with a mild rise for greater distances. Tour Edge also got creative with what they call the “L-Cup Face” for more distance. First, the L-Cup essentially acts as a hinge to help with the face flex at impact. It’s made out of a military-grade steel that allowed Tour Edge to make the face thinner which also increases flex. With the trampoline effect from the Diamond Face and the flex from the L-Cup, there is a lot of jump off of the face .

It’s worth noting that yes, the C721s do have stronger lofts, but it’s relative. Each club is lofted about a club stronger, meaning the 4 iron is more like a 3 iron, etc. Tour Edge offers the set in 3 thru A wedge so if you want to play more traditional gaps in lofts for your irons, you’re covered. This is also common for the player’s distance iron category in general, so just be smart about how you put your bag together.

Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Exotics C721 Irons

Look, buy a set of Tour Edge Exotics C721 irons and you’ll start hitting the ball like John Daly too! Ok, that’s obviously not guaranteed, but you never know.

In my experience, player’s distance irons always seem to struggle finding the right combination of bigger distances and a shotmaker’s level of control. Finding both of those in one club can be tricky. In my opinion, the C721 irons got it right. The beauty of the design wasn’t as much the “added” distance, but rather the distance is easier to achieve while still being able to control the ball and get creative with different shots you’d want from a player’s iron. That’s a pretty great combination and I think others will find the C721 to be one of the better overall player’s distance irons they’ll hit.

I really like your review of the Tour eDge C721 irons, Bill. I just bought a used set of these off the Tour Edge website. I’m getting on and finding distance with the irons a bit of a challenge, not so much with the woods. So I thought these might bring me back to the distance I had say 5-10 years ago. Even if some of it is attributable to stronger lofts, I hope some of it is the sprinig effect of the face and my efforts. I wonder if you think there is any advantage to the newer C722 ?

I think the 722 is generally better, but it has a little more of a “player” profile than the 721. That’s the biggest difference in my opinion.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 Iron Review

I had never struck a Tour Edge golf club before the Hot Launch C524 Irons arrived on my doorstep, so I was keen to see if they could perform as well as some of the best irons on the market for a fraction of the price.

Retailing for just $79.99/£65.00 per iron, the price tag certainly caught my eye as many irons in this category sell for far more than double that price. On first inspection out of the box, there were no signs of why that may be from an aesthetic point of view. Each iron was beautifully finished and looked great when I put them down in the playing position. A generous blade length and ample offset let me know that these were irons designed with playability in mind, but overall the dimensions and proportions were excellent and framed the ball nicely.

From a shelf appeal point of view, it is a case of nearly but not quite for me. I am generally someone who appreciates a minimalist approach to looks when it comes to golf equipment and the C524 irons are just a touch fussy for my tastes from the back. I don’t mind a subtle accent color but the bright blue badge just wasn’t for me, although that is just personal preference and some players may love it. I just feel that leaving that black or grey would have given the iron a slightly more premium look and feel.

In terms of the tech, there is quite a lot going on. At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that these were a hollow-body construction iron as there is no visual cavity, however, this is somewhat of an optical illusion. The cavity has simply been filled with Tour Edge’s VIBRCOR, which is a high-grade TPU designed to improve sound and feel.

Additional toe weighting has been added to the set with the intention of stabilizing impact and providing additional ball speed on off-center strikes.

I tested the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons at Saunton Golf Club , using my FullSwing KIT launch monitor and TaylorMade TP5 golf balls, both on the practice ground and out on the course.

Before I get into the launch monitor data, I wanted to give a special mention to the feel attributes of these irons. Impact provided a pleasant lively sensation but there was also a real depth to the strike that isn’t always present in the game-improvement iron category. For me, the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal is still the gold standard in terms of feel in this genre, but quite honestly, when coupled with some excellent turf interaction, the C524 iron is not a million miles behind.

Launch monitor data was pretty strong across the board, with ball speed and distance competitive with just about anything else. With the 7-iron coming in at 29˚ it sits within the higher end of its peers loft-wise but still managed to produce a ball speed of 129.3mph for me with a mid-low launch and spin of 15.5˚ and 5412rpm respectively, which culminated in a healthy carry number of 188 yards.

I did notice a slight right tendency in flight compared to some other game improvement irons which tend to feature more of a draw bias if anything, and I wonder whether that has anything to do with the additional toe weighting. It wasn't too severe, however, just something to note.

The Hot Launch C524 irons come with a stock steel option of the True Temper Elevate MPH95 shaft in R or S flex, and there are more weight and flex options with the Aldila Ascent PL stock graphite option. There are also three sizes of Lamkin grips to choose from.

Overall, I was very pleased with the performance and feel of the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons, and when you factor in the price tag, I think there is some exceptional value for money to be had. In terms of raw performance data, I would feel comfortable putting them up against anything else in the game improvement category and be very confident they would hold their own.
