The AC 55+ Travel Program has been much loved by Arlingtonians since 1971. As a part of Department of Parks and Recreation's (DPR) Office of 55+ Programs, 55+ Travel serves a broad spectrum of seniors from all of Arlington as well as neighboring communities. The travel program delivers fun and rewarding social experiences to some of the area’s best:

Secure your spot by pre-registering for a trip - make sure to note the start of the upcoming registration process. Once registered you will board the bus at one of the several senior locations listed for each trip.

AC 55+ Travel conducts trips every month. Trips are advertised in the  Arlington 55+ Guide . The first step in your journey: register for the  Arlington County 55+ Pass . 55+ Trip Sign Up Procedures

HOW TO REGISTER IN PERSON, BY PHONE OR BY MAIL FOR 55+ TRIPS:

Arlington County Residents are given priority for program registration; for example, residents will register on one day and non-residents the following day. Please check in the  55+ Guide  for upcoming registration dates.

• In-person by visiting a 55+ Center , or DPR's Administrative Services Office at 300 N. Park Drive, 22203 (first floor)
• Online  by following detailed instructions below (see next section)
• By phone  by calling  703-228-4747 , Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
• By mail  to 300 N. Park Drive, 22203 (include trip # on the check). Make checks payable to Tr easurer, Arlington County .

* Returned Check Fee is $50.

INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATIONS For security reasons, our registration system does not allow for connections outside the United States. If you know you will be traveling internationally during our registration period and would like to register for a class or two, please contact the Administrative Services Office ( 703-228-4747 ) in advance.

HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE FOR 55+ TRIPS:  

• To register online, go to  https://registration.arlingtonva.us  and enter your login ID and Password.
• Enter your login ID and password.  If this is your first time and don’t know your ID and password, call 703-228-4747 .
• A new web page will appear.
• Once logged in, click on the “55 Plus” menu picture box (scroll down) and then click on “Search 55+ Trips” when a new web page appears.
• Select the month your trip is in and then the trip you are interested in. Click the checkbox (check will appear in box).  Then select “Add to Cart” at the bottom of the screen. Trips with a red circle have no space available, trips with a yellow circle are those with a waitlist (which you can add your name to). If the trip has reached the limit for online registration, you may call the 55+ Travel Office to inquire about space availability at 703-228-4748 .
• Select the name of the individual you are registering and continue.
• Select “Continue” to proceed the transaction. If you have more trips to add to you virtual shopping cart then select “Continue Shopping”.

Heads Up Travelers!

• You need a 55+ Pass to travel with us (except for first-time guests - age 55 and older).
• Bus leaves PROMPTLY from each site at specified time.
• Return times are estimated.
• Checks, credit cards, or money order are the preferred method of payment ( Arlington County does not accept American Express ).
• Payment must be received within 3 business days or space will be released.
• Returned Check Fee is $50.

Remember that payments for trip reservations must be received within three working days, or reservations may be cancelled due to non-payment.

Refund Policy For Trips

• No refunds are granted on any trips which require meal reservations, tickets or chartered transportation unless staff is able to sell your reserved space.
• No refunds within 48 hours of trip departure time.
• Phone 703-228-4748 (voicemail) and leave a detailed message for requests for refunds for 55+ trips.

Parking Tips

• Barcroft : Parking is in the garage; Pick up in the front of the center.
• Gunston : Parking and Pick-up in the lower parking lot down the hill from the entrance to the school and just north of the tennis  courts and soccer fields,  and NOT by the community center.
• Thomas Jefferson (TJ) : Parking  and Pick-up are in the parking lot to the right of  the tennis courts, and NOT in front of the community center.
• Madison : Parking is in regular lots; Pick up in the front of the center.

Meal Choices

When meal choices are advertised, indicate your choice when you register. A dollar sign ($) means lunch or shopping is on your own (bring extra money), a fork and knife symbol means the meal is included in the stated price.

Drop-Ins & Registration

Drop-in classes are ongoing programs that participants can join anytime with a valid 55+ Pass. Any program listed as a drop-in does not require pre-registration. All programs have a capacity limit and may fill up. Unless designated as drop-in, all programs require pre-registration. Registration automatically closes two business days prior to the start of the program. For questions, contact the Administrative Services Office at 703-228-4747 .

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. Intrepid Travel

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Travel Clubs for Seniors

The Best Travel Clubs for Seniors are a great way to travel with others. You can find new senior travel partners and make friendships. In some clubs you can even travel with friends or family plus enjoy the company of new travel companions.

What are Travel Clubs for Seniors and Why Join one?

Senior Travel Clubs differ from other types of group travel. Travel clubs usually charge a small fee. Sometimes they ask for a modest initial fee to help cover their own expenses. To justify paying these fees realize that there are benefits. 

• Club only discounts
• Travel Brochures or other well-researched resources.
• Host visits from experienced travelers who can offer advice.
• Often, you can personally ask questions and get helpful information.

Clubs have meetings and Senior Travel Clubs aren’t any different.

These meeting might be once a month or only a few times a year. When a trip is being planned, it is a social event.

You can help in the decision making; it can be fun and rewarding. You don’t need to do it all alone and you can get or receive help.

The planning becomes a shared experience and the excitement can be contagious!

Club Safety

For many reasons, there is always safety in traveling with others. It may deter being targeted by those eager to steal from you or con you. 

With a Travel Club one important consideration might be transportation.

Many Club Trips are taken by bus or car. 

Even some bus, plane or train trips require transportation to the bus station, airport, or train station. So if the destination is close or far, you can usually share the driving or not drive at all if that is your preference. 

You might have difficulty driving at night now or a disability might hinder your safety with driving. Whatever the reason, being a member of a travel club solves the problem.

As older adults, health is often a consideration when traveling. Taking trips with a group is one way to leave some of our health concerns behind. 

An advantage of a club is traveling with others closer to our age. Many will have health issues of various kinds just like you. 

Have you ever rejected family vacations with younger members because you didn’t want to slow them down? At this time of life we are entitled to travel on our own terms.

Covid has presented most Senior Travelers with additional challenges. Senior Travel Clubs will have health safety requirements which will give you a sense of protection. 

Types of Travel Clubs for Seniors

Senior Travel groups vary by size. While some have a small number of travelers, others are much larger.

Another distinction is whether or not a club allows you to bring a partner, friend, or family members along. Some clubs do not allow this but rather require exclusive membership for all travelers.

Although not all clubs are commercial, many are. These commercial travel clubs are hosted by large companies. 

Some advice, beware of scams in regard to commercial clubs. Do your research, check for references, and if necessary use the Better Business Bureau. 

One Red Flag might be pressure to join. Another would be a high fees in exchange for promised large discounts. Legitimate Travel Clubs usually charge a modest fee.

Where to find Senior Travel Clubs

Some examples:

• Alumni, Veterans, Retiree organizations
• Sporting, arts, nature, birding
• Community Centers,  religious, volunteer
• Cultural or languages
• RV, motorcycle, car, train groups. 

Sometimes you will find that your church or Senior Citizen Center may have their own travel clubs.

You may also discover travel clubs to suit you on the Internet or through Social Media such as Facebook and Pinterest.

How to choose a Travel Club for Seniors

This personal choice has criteria that can differ from person to person.

Do you want your trip to reflect your hobby or are you interested in the adventure of sightseeing a new location?

What is your age and activity level? How does the club support these individual needs? Are there any levels to determine this?

Many of us seniors can choose the length of our vacations. How long would you like yours to last; a day, a week, a month?

What kind of transportation do you prefer when traveling?

If you are wary of traveling right now due to Covid concerns, some clubs have Virtual Trips.

These can be interesting and a way to meet some of the members for future trips. 

These are all considerations for choosing a club that will enable you to travel with “peace of mind” as a senior worry free and get the most out of your travels. 

Examples of Travel Clubs for Seniors

Kindred Tours:  

The fee to join is $36 for a one year membership. You will receive a monthly newsletter. 

The majority of members are Solo Travelers or couples who meet the age requirement of 55 plus. The trip group is small ranging from around 8 to 16. 

The trips offered span the globe but the main focus is the Southwestern United States. 

Another advantage of this club is that they will customize a trip specifically for your club. Additionally, all travelers do not need to be members of your club.

The Affordable Travel Club:

Club members must be over 40 and pay $15 for a single membership and $20 for a double membership, U.S. dollars. 

This club is similar to a house/home exchange membership program. They call themselves a “Hospitality Exchange” club.

It has a North American Membership Application (for those joining from U.S./Canada/Mexico) and an Overseas Membership Application (for those joining from overseas). 

This club was established to provide low cost accommodations for older travelers. When you join this club, you receive an Online Directory and Host Membership Card. 

You can use this directory to search for all the accommodations in the location of your travels. You can then contact the owner directly to arrange your stay. 

As a member, you will host approximately 3 times throughout a year. You will be expected to provide clean and comfortable sleeping quarters for your guest/guests to stay. 

The club rules ask that you provide breakfast and an hour of your time to acquaint them with the area.

Travel and Leisure Travel Club:

This club is large and well known. You can try if for Free for 30 days and then there is a monthly fee of $14.95. 

There are numerous benefits including:

• A subscription to the famous “Travel and Leisure” Magazine 

• Access to tours of all types around the world 

• Activities, excursions and a lot more. 

You will receive members only pricing on rental cars and discounts on cruises.

Senior Travel Tips: How to Have Great Adventures as an Older Adult

For a senior, travel can be an excellent way to stimulate the mind, connect with a wider community, and just have fun . Exploring new environments and meeting new people can help older adults stay both physically active and socially engaged . Whether the idea is to experience more of the world, spend time with loved ones, or just take a break from the everyday routine, travel can bring enormous rewards.

Getting older certainly doesn't have to keep anyone from having new adventures. An AARP survey of adults between the ages of 54 and 72 found that virtually all of them planned to take at least one domestic trip in 2019. Nearly a third anticipated taking four or more trips. What's more, almost half said they expected to travel both within the U.S. and internationally.

Flying is often the quickest and most convenient way to travel, but it can be stressful and confusing. Here are a few things you can do to make the experience easier and more pleasant:

1. Ask about senior discounts .

Some airlines offer reduced fares for older adults, although they might not widely advertise such fares. For instance, Delta has a senior discount in some markets, but it's not available online; you can only get it by calling the reservations department. United Airlines offers special senior fares on some routes. However, you may need to call and ask what's available (and be sure to check if it's any cheaper than the normal adult rate). Notably, Southwest Airlines has a senior discount in the form of reduced Anytime fares for adults over age 65. These senior fares are refundable and can be booked either online or by phone.

2. Check in online if possible.

Most airlines allow you to check in for your flight through their websites or mobile apps up to 24 hours in advance. In most cases, it's better to check in online rather than at the airport. Some budget airlines, such as Spirit, charge a fee to check in at the airline counter. Plus, checking in from your computer or phone lets you save time at the airport. You can bypass the ticket counter and go straight through security to your departure gate if you only have carry-on luggage. (However, you might have to check in at the airport counter if you are requesting a wheelchair or other airline personnel assistance.)

One of the biggest advantages of checking in online is being able to select your seat. To take full advantage of this, you should check in early for your flight. That's because the earlier you check in, the more seats you will have to choose from. So if you're hoping to sit near the front of the plane or avoid the middle seat, it's a good idea to check in online as early as you can.

Keep in mind that Southwest Airlines does things a little differently. It assigns boarding positions rather than specific seats. Depending on what type of fare you purchase and when you check in, you will be assigned to A, B, or C zone, with a number between 1 and 60 (where A1 gets on first and C60 gets on last). Your place in the queue determines when you get to board; once you are on the plane, you are free to choose any available seat. So on Southwest, checking in sooner will not get you a specific seat, but it will get you a better boarding position.

3. Print your boarding pass.

Technically, if you check in online and have a smartphone , you don't need to print a boarding pass in most cases. You can simply show the agent the electronic boarding pass that was sent to you when you checked in. (Note that an e-ticket is not the same as a boarding pass.) However, it's wise to have a paper copy of your travel documents in case your device runs out of power, or there is some other type of technical problem.

You can print your pass on your home computer when you check in online, at the self-serve check-in kiosks in the airport terminal, or the airline's ticket counter. The good news is that you do not have to check in twice on connecting flights on Southwest or most other airlines; you should receive all of your boarding passes at once.

4. Get to the airport early.

Even if you have checked in online, you should be at the airport at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to take off. (Allow at least three hours for an international flight.) That's especially important if you are checking baggage, since you will need to drop off your luggage at a designated counter by a certain time.

If you are traveling domestically and only have hand luggage, things are a bit simpler. In such a case, if you check in online, all you have to do at the airport is go through security and find your departure gate. However, you never know how long the security line will be, so it's still wise to arrive early. And if you have mobility issues, be sure to allow for extra time so that you're not rushed.

5. Speed through security.

Older travelers can get a bit of a break when it comes to security screening. For instance, if they're over 75, seniors do not have to take shoes off at airport security (although the shoes may still be swabbed for traces of explosives). They can also leave light jackets on.

Medically required liquids and gels are not subject to the same size restrictions as other carry-on liquids. However, they need to be screened separately, so you can speed things up by packing them in a Ziploc bag that is separate from your other liquids. Keep the medications in an easily accessible part of your carry-on bag. Tell the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer about them when you get to the checkpoint.

If you have a disability or medical issue, you may want to fill out a TSA Notification Card so you can communicate your condition clearly and discreetly. For example, if you have a metal hip implant, you can note it on the card so that the officer will know that you are likely to set off the metal detector. In that case, you would be subject to a pat-down or screening via a full-body scanner.

Travelers of any age are eligible for TSA PreCheck , which gives them the privilege of not removing their shoes, belts, jackets, laptops, or liquids during screening at participating airports. To get TSA PreCheck, you must apply online, go through a short in-person appointment involving fingerprinting and a background check, and pay the $85 fee. (Some credit cards cover this fee or allow you to use frequent flyer points to pay for it; check with your credit card issuer.) If approved, you will be covered for five years.

If you travel internationally, Global Entry works just like TSA PreCheck, with the added benefit of expedited lines for customs and immigration upon re-entering the U.S. It costs $100 for five years.

6. Try to get expedited boarding.

Being one of the first to board a plane lets you get settled in your seat sooner and avoid being shuffled along in a long lineup of people. It also gives you a better chance of finding space for your bag in the overhead compartment. In some cases, boarding earlier can also mean securing a better seat.

Here's how you can try to make sure you take your seat early, depending on the airline you use:

Older adults with disabilities can get on the plane during preboarding. You can also avoid long lines by purchasing Priority Boarding, which lets you board ahead of other economy passengers. However, you cannot buy Priority Boarding if you purchase a Basic Economy fare (i.e., the cheapest one).

You can ask to be in the preboarding group if you need assistance due to a mobility challenge or other type of disability. American divides its regular boarding into nine different groups. First class, business class, and elite status customers get on first. However, you can opt to pay for Priority boarding, which gets you on with group four. As with United, Priority is not available to passengers on Basic Economy tickets.

On Delta, seniors who need extra time or help to board can take their seats during preboarding. Otherwise, you can pay $15 per flight to ensure your spot in the Main Cabin 1 group. Main Cabin 1 boards after families with young children, upper-level elite passengers, and Delta-branded credit card holders, but before most economy customers.

Passengers with disabilities are eligible to preboard the plane. Alternatively, you can choose to pay for an Even More Space seat, which comes with a few inches of extra legroom and lets you preboard. Even More Space also lets you use special security screening lines in participating airports.

Seniors can board early on Southwest in certain cases. For instance, if you need a particular type of seat due to a disability or need someone to assist you during boarding, you may get on the plane during the preboarding process. If you just need a bit of extra time to get settled, you will be permitted to board between the A and B groups.

You can also pay for Early Bird Check In to have Southwest automatically reserve a boarding position for you 36 hours before departure. While you do not have to check in yourself with Early Bird Check In, you can get your boarding pass by going online no sooner than 24 hours before your flight leaves, clicking "check in," and printing your pass. It's not crucial to do this at a certain time, since your spot in the queue will have already been assigned. Early Bird Check In does not guarantee A group boarding. However, it does boost your chance of securing a better boarding position. Some people believe Early Bird Check In is worth it if you have strong feelings about where you sit and don't want to stress about having to check in exactly 24 hours before your flight.

7. Don't be afraid to bring a mobility device.

Most airlines allow you to bring canes, walkers , wheelchairs, and even electric scooters along for no extra cost. If you can't walk to your seat, you can transfer from a wheelchair into a special aisle chair that is narrow enough to fit down the aircraft's aisle.

Depending on the size of your device, you can bring it right into the cabin and store it in an overhead bin, under the seat in front of you, or in a separate storage area. If it doesn't fit in any of these places, the airline will check it as cargo for no additional fee. When you reach your destination, the device will be brought to the aircraft door for you unless you request to pick it up at baggage claim.

8. Get convenient and durable travel gear

How to Arrange a Trip for an Elderly Parent

However, it can be dangerous for elderly people to fly by themselves if they aren't prepared. 1. Choose travel times and routes carefully.

It's best to go for the shortest and most direct route, even if it costs a little more. Your goal should be to keep things as simple as possible, so the fewer connections, the better. And pay attention to the type of aircraft your mom or dad will be on: Some airports do not use jetways for smaller planes and instead require passengers to climb a set of stairs to board. (However, federal law stipulates that planes with at least 19 seats must have mechanical ramps to assist with boarding.)

Also, try to arrange travel times for when your parent is most alert and energetic. That might mean avoiding early morning or late afternoon departures if possible.

2. Make special requests by phone (and follow up).

You can book a trip online. However, it's sometimes easier to make special requests like wheelchair assistance, bulkhead seats with extra legroom, or expedited boarding if you speak to a human being. Proper arrangements can be especially important if your parent will need help getting to their seat rather than just to the plane.

Airlines are required by law to provide wheelchair service for free to any traveler who requests it. If your loved one has challenges with walking but doesn't need a wheelchair, ask if they can ride on an electric cart through the airport.

If your mom or dad uses portable oxygen, find out if the airline requires any medical documentation to transport it. Also, be sure to let the airline know of any special dietary restrictions your loved one has.

You could also take in a country music show or live theater performance, play a round at one of Branson's many golf courses, or ride an old-fashioned paddle-wheeler. And senior discounts are widely available at area hotels and resorts.

6. Albuquerque, New Mexico

What Are Senior Travel Clubs? And Should You Join One?

What is a senior travel club, anyway? A scam? A great way to save on travel? A way to meet potential travel companions? Or something else entirely?

It turns out that senior travel clubs can be any of these things.

What Are Senior Travel Clubs?

Many travel clubs charge an annual membership fee. Typically, the membership fee is modest, and provides you with access to members-only publications, information, discounts or online travel content. A few travel clubs charge an initiation fee and annual dues.

Before you decide to join a senior travel club, take a few minutes to find out which type of travel club you are considering.

Travel Groups

For seniors who are not interested in solo travel, joining a travel club can help them find interesting trips to take.  Some senior travel clubs exist for the sole purpose of organizing trips for members. Trip lengths and destinations vary.

Travel Information and Social Gathering

Other senior travel clubs are social in nature. Members are invited to attend monthly or quarterly meetings, which may involve social time and, possibly, a presentation from a member or a travel professional. This type of senior travel club would be a good fit for someone who is looking for inspiration, new friends or potential travel companions.

Transportation or Activity-Specific Travel

RV owners will be familiar with this type of travel club; in addition to clubs for owners of all types of RVs, you can also join a travel club for owners of your make or class of RV. Train enthusiasts can also join travel clubs just for them.

If your interests lie elsewhere, you will probably be able to find a travel club with like-minded members, such as a travel club for seniors who enjoy outdoor adventure.

Women-Only Travel

While there are many travel providers that organize women-only trips, it can be a bit more difficult to find a travel club created just for women. Thelma & Louise is one of the best-known online women-only travel clubs. Members share travel stories, plan trips and meetups and look for travel companions via Thelma & Louise’s website.

Money-Saving Club

Some travel clubs are formed to help members save money. Boondockers Welcome and The Affordable Travel Club , for example, help travelers arrange free RV parking (Boondockers Welcome) or lodging (The Affordable Travel Club) at members’ homes.

Travel Club Scams

Some so-called travel clubs are scams designed to part you from your hard-earned money. In some cases, scammers offer free airfare or hotel stays, often by postcard or at a “travel seminar,” but require you to pay a reservation fee in advance. When you try to book a trip, your dates are never available, and the scammer keeps your fee payment. Another version of this scam involves restrictive terms and conditions that prevent you from ever actually booking a trip.

Other travel clubs run by scammers charge thousands of dollars in upfront membership fees, promising travel discounts or free travel. Instead, the scammers disappear with your money and you are left with nothing.

To protect yourself against scammers, never agree to join a travel club if a salesperson is pressuring you to do so.

Get all the information about the club in writing and take it home.  A reputable travel club will willingly give you the information you request, without pressuring you to join.

Read every word. Do an online search for the name of the club and the names of its owners. If possible, have an attorney read the contract; in the absence of an attorney, ask a family member or friend to read the document.

Never give your credit card number or other financial information to a travel club representative unless you are joining the club. Pay dues, fees and travel costs by credit card so that you can dispute them if problems occur.

Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it is.

Where to Find Senior Travel Clubs

Start your search for a senior travel club in your own community. Senior centers and recreation departments often sponsor senior travel clubs or organize outings for local seniors. You can also do an online search; this approach is particularly helpful if you are looking for an activity-specific travel club.

Alternatives to Senior Travel Clubs

If you are reluctant to pay annual dues or a membership fee to belong to a travel club, perhaps a well-organized tour is a better choice. You can find women-only, high adventure and other themed tours quite easily, either through a travel agent or online.

You may be able to find travel meetups and presentations in your local community, perhaps through a church or community center. If you are mainly interested in meeting people who enjoy travel or getting travel information, you may be able to do so without paying money to join a club.

Other places to learn about vacation destinations and meet people who love to travel include colleges – look for noncredit courses – as well as libraries and travel shows.

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

The benefits of travel , whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees or seniors who have time and a travel budget , the opportunities are nearly endless. The world and even their own city, state, or country are waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience, careers, ages, hometowns, and beliefs have taken them in many directions. Their interests, abilities, values, and habits may be different, but it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes with tours, from independent to guided options, budget to luxury, and group to individual.

The 14 organizations listed here are either aimed specifically at mature clients or offer experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a range of travelers.

Walking the World

Walking the World , based in Grand Junction, Colorado , offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy Rocky Mountain National Park , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Road Scholar , which began as Elderhostel in 1975, was rebranded in 2010, recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and pleasure-filled educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over age 50, ready to learn from travel, or focus on a specific interest. Grandparent travel , cruises, city exploration, national parks, historical trips, and more are described based on duration, activity level, price, and additional details that help clients select the ideal destination and experience.

Adventures Abroad

Adventures Abroad offers trips on every continent and describes their clients as "curious, active, and often very well-traveled." The company largely caters to travelers 50 or older, but tours are open to adults of all ages. For their "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, there are no strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to four based on physical activity, with the first level requiring only leisurely walks. Senior Cycling , based in Asheville , North Carolina, specializes in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up. The groups are small, limited to a maximum of 13 participants, and are always accompanied by the "sag wagon," in case someone needs a break from riding. Tours are rated at three levels, from easy (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain) to advanced (for those who are at ease with about 50 miles per day, traffic, and hills). Custom tours can be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

Firebird Tours , based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with international offices in Australia , Switzerland , and Malta, focuses on clients ages 50 and over. Their small group tours, which take guests to destinations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South Africa, Morocco, and North America, aim for value, comfort, and quality. Themes for tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, northern lights, and theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Backroads , based in Berkeley, California, specializes in active vacations. While their tours are open to all ages, most of their clients are over 50. (Family group trips naturally have a wider range of ages.) This means that most Americans will need to be creative to fulfill their wanderlust after retirement.

Some ways you can save on travel and vacation costs include:

• Group trips : Because travel agencies purchase tickets in bulk, they can pass the savings on to you. Group travel is generally led by expert guides steering you towards the best things to do while at specific locales. If you're traveling solo, it's a great way to do so without feeling alone.
• Off-season travel : Since you're retired and no longer tied to a time clock, you have the flexibility of traveling during off-peak travel times. This allows you to take advantage of lower rates. Flights on Monday through Wednesday, especially those during the late morning or afternoon, cost less. Off-season travel gives you further savings on accommodations and attractions. Three great places to find discount flights are The Flight Deal, Secret Flying, and HolidayPirates.
• Honey travel : According to Travel+Leisure, Honey generally offers hotel discounts better than those you'll find on other booking sites.  Honey is a free service (a browser extension) that automatically searches for discounts and coupon codes.
• Senior discounts : Many organizations and retailers offer senior discounts, so be sure to inquire about them as you make reservations and as you travel. Members of AARP , AAA, and veterans' groups can receive discounts at hotels, airlines, tour providers, and car rental agencies. The National Park Service sells an $80 (plus a $10 handling fee) for a lifetime senior pass to those 62 and older. Some airlines offer a limited number of senior fares. Many hotels offer senior discounts .
• Stay at hostels : Hostels offer affordable places to stay when traveling. Hostels are popular with younger travelers, so be prepared to run into a lot of partiers during your stay. But as one senior shared, if there's too much activity in a hostel, they won't have lost much money should they decide to move on. Sites to help locate a hostel include Hostels.com, HostelWorld.com, Hosteling International, and Hostel Bookers.
• Stay at an Airbnb : An Airbnb offers someone's home as a place to stay instead of a hotel. Accommodations may be an entire home or someone's spare room. You can find unique accommodations ranging from a castle to an igloo.
• Additional resources : Kiplinger.com provides a list of sites for the best travel deals to help you save money. Cruise Sheet and Vacations To Go are great places to locate discounts on cruises, although they may not be senior-specific.  Intrepid, Kiwi Experience (New Zealand), Context Travel (walking tours), and BusAbout are great places to find discounts on tours and excursions, especially last minute. But again, they may not be senior-specific.

No matter what kind of organization or group you choose to travel with, it’s important to plan sufficiently for your trip. • Senior travel clubs and groups :  Senior travel clubs/groups organize trips for members, offering vacation packages at great rates. It also provides a wonderful way for solo vacationers to travel with a group of like-minded seniors.  ElderTreks, Row Adventures, and Walking the World specialize in adventure travel, something many older adults are searching for. Before joining a club, be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau and read their literature, especially the fine print, to ensure the group you have chosen is reputable.
• Educational travel : Road Scholar is a not-for-profit organization and was once known as Elderhostel International .  It offers thousands of affordable learning adventures for adults, both nationally and internationally. Some scholarships are available for those who don't have the financial means to participate.
• Voluntourism : A volunteer vacation allows you to give back in a multitude of ways and enjoy various cultures, depending upon the organization you volunteer and travel with. The trips aren't free, but they are rewarding and provide an economical way to visit a particular area. National and international opportunities are available. Some organizations to check out include REI Adventures, American Hiking Society, Discover Corps, Global Volunteers, and Earth Watch. Many others are available.

When it comes to retirement, many people envision spending their golden years traveling the world . Those aspirations, however, involve a lot of money, effort, and planning to execute.

But did you know there’s a country that will actually take care of the majority of travel costs and logistics for its retirees to vacation? Spain, a country that consistently ranks among the best places in the world to retire , is the first country in the EU to give certain senior citizens and residents access to greatly subsidized getaways, with expenses like transportation, meals, and hotels included.

The program is run by Spain’s Institute for Seniors and Social Services (IMSERSO), which calls the concept “social tourism.” The gist is that investing in travel for seniors will help improve their health and keep them active and engaged. "The IMSERSO tourism program contributes to active aging and the promotion of an active lifestyle, while favoring intergenerational solidarity, generating employment and economic activity, and favoring inter-territorial solidarity through travel between different regions,” an IMSERSO spokesperson told EuroNews in February.

The discounted trips are available each year in the “ shoulder season ” from October through June. For the 2023-2024 season, the Spanish government made 886,269 places available for retirees in the social tourism program—that’s 70,000 more spots than the previous year. Prices for these vacation packages range anywhere from 124 euros to 435 euros, depending on the destination, length of the trip, and whether transportation is included.

Here’s everything you need to know about the program, including how American expats can apply.

What type of travel is subsidized?

The types of trips range from four-day city break, five-day “nature tourism” trips that focus on exploring the natural areas of a particular region, or six-day culture circuits that explore several towns in a particular region. There are also longer vacations of eight to ten days in several regions along Spain’s coasts or in its islands in the Atlantic Ocean or Balearic Sea.

What destinations are included?

Destinations covered by the program include towns and cities throughout popular regions of Spain, including Andalusia, Catalonia, and Valencia. Pay a visit to Granada, the capital of Flamenco dancing , relax in the quiet beach town of Castellón, or soak up the culture and energy of Barcelona .

Among the nature-focused itineraries are jaunts through numerous striking areas like Asturias, an autonomous region on Spain’s northwest coast known for its breathtaking land formations, including dramatic seaside cliffs and jagged mountains rising out of green hillsides. Or choose to visit Aragon, a region that sits in the Pyrenees mountains and is home to Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

For the longer trips, vacation hubs like the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands—home to iconic sunny destinations like Ibiza and Mallorca —are also on the table.

What costs are covered?

The program generally covers accommodations and meals, as well as insurance plans and sightseeing costs, however, some of the inclusions vary based on the trip package. For many of the packages, travelers can choose whether they’d like to include transportation to and from their destinations.

Spain's IMSERSO tourism program allows seniors to receive discounted trips to destinations like Barcelona and Granada.

Who is eligible?

According to a release from Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, to participate in the program you must be a legal resident of Spain. For expat retirees, the most common way to receive Spanish residency status is to apply for a non-working residence visa through the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or to make a real estate investment of at least €500,000, which qualifies you for a “golden visa".

In addition to being a legal resident, you must be at least one of the following:

1. A retiree who receives a pension from the Spanish Social Security system

2. A person 55 years of age or older who receives a widow's pension from the Spanish Social Security

3. A person 60 years of age or older who receives unemployment benefits or other subsidies from the Spanish Social Security system

4. A person 65 years of age or older who is insured or a beneficiary of the Spanish Social Security system

The site also stipulates that Spaniards who are residing abroad may also be eligible as long as they meet the above requirements or are pensioners of the public social security systems of the country or countries to which they have emigrated.

When evaluating who is accepted into the program, officials consider other factors like age, disability status, financial situation, and whether they’ve participated in a discounted trip before. Those who are older, lower income, or haven’t traveled on a social tourism trip are given priority.

Additionally, eligible retirees that are granted the discounted trips can bring along a spouse or partner, or a disabled child, even if they don’t meet the eligibility requirements.

How do you apply?

First-time applicants or new retirees can submit an electronic application on IMSERSO’s site. They can also print the application and mail it to: Imserso Tourism Program, post office box 10.140, 28080 Madrid. The application window for the 2023-2024 season has already closed, but it will likely open for the 2024-2025 travel season beginning in June.

Retirees who have participated in the program receive a letter in the mail with all the information they need to request a new trip.

Once accepted into the program, participants can request their ideal discounted trips using their program ID card on the program’s official travel site— turismosocial.com —when the booking window opens in October. Then it’s just a few short clicks to scoring a subsidized vacation and enjoying your Golden Years to the fullest.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers. 

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over. 

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website. 

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport. 

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you. 

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you. 

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. 

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information. 

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you. 

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.
