"Abode of Lord Venkateswara Swamy"

Tirupati tourism.

Situated in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, Tirupati is known for Lord Venkateshwara Temple, one of the most visited pilgrimage centers in the world. It is also one of the world's richest temples known by different names - Tirumala Temple, Tirupati Temple, and Tirupati Balaji Temple . Tirumala is one of the seven hills in Tirupati, where the main temple is located. The temple is believed to be where Lord Venkateshwara took the form of an idol and is home to the deity Govinda. Tirupati is one of India's oldest cities and is mentioned in many ancient Vedas and Puranas.

Tirupati is the main town, while Tirumala Hills is where Tirupati Balaji Temple is situated. Also called Sri Venkateshvara Swami Vaari Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, believed to be a form of Lord Vishnu, who appeared on earth to save mankind from kali yuga. The famous Tirupati Laddoo, given as a prasad at the temple, has the Geographical indication tag, which means it can only be made and sold at the temple. It is hugely loved by the pilgrims and is generally included in the paid darshan tickets or can be bought from the laddoo counters inside the temple complex. Many devotees also tonsure their heads as an offering to Lord Venkateswara Swamy once their wish is fulfilled or to get rid of their sins and ego. It is done free of cost at  Kalyanakatta  buildings. Another popular ritual at Tirupati Temple is Thulabaram, wherein a devotee sits on one side of the weighing balance scale. In contrast, the other side is filled with materials (like sugar, jaggery, tulsi leaves, banana, gold, and coins) more than the weight of the devotee. This ritual is mostly performed with children and infants. The non-stop chanting of ‘Om Namo Venkatesaya,’ the mad pilgrim rush, and the 8-feet tall idol of Lord Venkateshwara – everything about the Sri Venkateshwara Temple is majestic. Spread over an area of 26 kilometers and is visited by nearly 50,000 pilgrims daily. The Padmavathi Temple, dedicated to Goddess Padmavati, consort of Lord Venkateswara, is situated at Tiruchanoor in Tirupati town. Many devotees believe they should visit Goddess Padmavati and seek her blessings before visiting Lord Venkateswara Swamy at Tirumala. There are other temples in Tirupati too that you can visit, including the Sri Kalahasti temple, Sri Govindarajaswami Temple, the Kondandarama Temple, the Parashurameshwara Temple, and the ISKCON temple. Tirupati is home to a unique geological wonder that you shouldn’t miss out on! The Silathoranam is a natural arch formed out of rocks and is located at the Tirumala Hills.

Complete Guide of Tirupati Balaji Temple

Tirupati Balaji Temple Overview

Devoted to Sri Venkateswara, Tirumala Tirupati Temple is recognized as the second most visited shrine in the world and one of the top temples in South India. Nearly 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims visit Tirupati Balaji temple daily. Further, the count reaches as high as up to 500,000 during festivals and on special occasions.

A stunning example of Dravidian architecture, the Tirupati temple stands high on the Ventaka or Venkatachala Hill in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Dwelling on the seventh peak of Tirupati Hill, Sri Venkateswara is also called as the ‘Lord of the Seven Hills’.

Abiding by the rituals of Hinduism, the Tirupati Balaji temple India follows the philosophy of love, equality and prohibits sacrificial offerings of animals. The donations given by the devotees and the immense wealth make it one of the richest temples in the world.

The Tirumala temple houses Tarigonda Vengamamba Annaprasadam complex which offers free meals to pilgrims. The sanctum sanctorum also has two modern Queue complex buildings for organizing the rush. Various pilgrim lodging sites and hair tonsure buildings can also be spotted within the premises.

The Tirupati balaji temple is one of the eight Vishnu Swayambhu Kshetras and the last earthly Divya Desam. Thus, it becomes more important to go for Tirupati darshan, pay homage to Lord Vishnu and seek his blessings.

History of Tirupati Balaji Temple

Tirupati temple in South India has a rich historical legacy associated with it. The reins of the temple have been transferred from one hand to another. Various dynasties and rulers have presided over the shrine. The sequential order being that of the Pallavas, Cholas, Vijaynagar Pradhans, Golcondas, French, Nawab of Carnatic, East India Company, Mahants of Hathiramji Muth, TTD and AP State Endowments Dept.

The first noted donation at the Tirupati Balaji temple India was made in 966 CE by Samavai, queen of the Pallava dynasty. She donated numerous jewels and two parcels of lands to be used as the revenue generating resources for the celebration of festivals. However, the temple became rich during the Vijayanagara Realm. The roof of the Ananda Nilayam was gilded because of the offerings presented by the Krishnadevaraya in the form of jewels and gold.

Under the rule of East India Company in the 19 th -century, the Balaji Temple was leased for auction to a tenant. The tenant was ordered to pay a fixed price to the Company by charging fees and collecting taxes for Sevas in Temple. The walls of the Tirupati Balaji temple depict the tales of endowments and patronage of the dynasties which ruled it.

The legend associated with the Temple

According to a legend, Goddess Lakshmi felt insulted by Brigu Rishi who kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest. After this, she had a fight with God and left her heavenly abode, the Vaikunta. Due to this she landed on Earth and settled here. In search of his beloved, Lord Vishnu also came to earth and was named as Srinivasa. After all his efforts went in vain, he decided to dwell at Tirumala hills and continue his search. Meanwhile, he met the beautiful daughter of the King of the seven hills in Tirumala, Padmavati. Upon falling in love, they decided to settle into wedlock.

A huge price was demanded by the king. Thus, Lord Vishnu took a loan of one crore and 11.4 million gold coins from Kubera. He agreed but imposed a condition that Vishnu can’t go back to Vaikuntha without paying off the debt. To this, God Vishnu agreed and married Padmavathi. Knowing about the marriage, Lakshmi came to question him. But he soon transformed into an idol upon confronting the Goddess.

Since then, Lord Vishnu is staying at Tirupati Balaji temple until the debts are paid. Brahma and Shiva, the Hindu Gods, explained Lakshmi that it was the Lord’s desire to be here to help human beings from everlasting troubles of Kalyug.

Goddess Lakshmi and Padamavathi also decided to stay with him here. Thus, devotees offer numerous precious things and a huge amount of money in the donation, to help their lord to pay off the debts.

Sapthagiri with its 7 summits is seen as representing the saptarishis, the seven sages who represent divine knowledge and blissful salvation. Some see these 7 hills as a representation of the 7 heads of lord Vishnu’s beloved perch Adisesha. So, this spiritual land is also known as Seshachalam.

The seven summits are known as Vrishabhadri, Anjanadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Seshadri, Narayanadri, and Venkatadri. Each summit has a beautiful cultural association with our Hindu scriptures and a spiritual significance. The revered Balaji temple is situated on Venkatadri, the seventh peak.

To catch a glimpse of the golden feet of Lord Venkateswara, a devotee has to cross 7 peaks of the Tirumala Hill. So, this spiritual abode is also called ‘The Temple of Seven Hills’.

Tirumala Venkateswara Temple

The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple is the main attraction of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. It is one of the most visited and revered temples in India. It is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara , an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have manifested himself on the Tirumala Hills. The temple is located on the seventh peak of the Tirumala Hills, called Venkatadri , which is about 22 km from Tirupati. The temple is also known as the Balaji Temple, the Srinivasa Temple, or the Tirupati Temple.

The History and Legend of Tirumala Venkateswara Temple

The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple has a long and fascinating history and legend. According to the legend, Lord Vishnu , in his previous incarnation as Lord Rama, promised to his devotee, an ape-like being called Hanuman, that he would grant him darshan in his next incarnation as Lord Venkateswara. However, when Lord Vishnu incarnated as Lord Venkateswara, he was cursed by a sage called Bhrigu, who kicked him on his chest, where his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, resides. As a result, Goddess Lakshmi left him and went to the earth. Lord Venkateswara followed her and reached the Tirumala Hills, where he met a cowherd girl called Padmavathi, who was the reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. He fell in love with her and married her, but he also had to pay a huge amount of money to her father, the king of the place, as dowry. To pay the debt, he took a loan from Kubera, the god of wealth, and agreed to stay on the Tirumala Hills until he repays the loan. He also asked his devotees to help him in repaying the loan by offering him money and valuables. This is why the devotees offer money and valuables to Lord Venkateswara in the temple.

According to the history, the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple was built by the Pallava king, Thondaiman , in the 8th century CE. The temple was later renovated and expanded by various dynasties and rulers, such as the Cholas, the Pandyas, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Nayakas, the Marathas, the Mysore Kingdom, and the British. The temple was also patronized and donated by various kings and devotees, such as Krishnadevaraya, Ramanuja, Annamacharya, and Rukmini Devi Arundale. The temple was also protected and preserved by various saints and sages, such as Ramananda, Madhvacharya, and Vedanta Desika. The temple was also visited and praised by various poets and scholars, such as Kalidasa, Adi Shankara, and Jayadeva.

The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple has a magnificent and splendid architecture and features. The temple covers an area of about 2.2 acres and has a height of about 50 feet. The temple has four main entrances , called gopurams, which are decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures. The Vimana has a golden flagstaff, called the Dhwajasthambham , which has a flag, called the Garudadhwaja, with the image of Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu, on it.

The temple has a sanctum sanctorum, called the Garbha Griha , where the idol of Lord Venkateswara is installed. The idol is about 8 feet tall and is made of black stone. The idol has four hands, two of which hold a conch and a discus, the symbols of Lord Vishnu, and the other two are in the gesture of blessing and protection. The idol wears a crown, called the Kireeta, which has a large emerald, called the Chintamani, embedded in it. The idol also wears various ornaments, such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and anklets, which are made of gold and precious stones. The idol also has a sacred mark, called the Namam, on its forehead, which is made of camphor and saffron. The idol is adorned with various flowers, such as jasmine, lotus, and tulsi, which are offered by the devotees.

The temple also has a hall, called the Mukha Mandapam , where the devotees can have a glimpse of the Lord from a distance. The hall has several pillars, which are carved with the images of various gods and goddesses. The hall also has a lamp, called the Jyotirlinga, which is believed to be lit by Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, and is never extinguished. The hall also has a silver altar, called the Bangaru Vakili, which leads to the sanctum sanctorum. The altar has two statues of dwarapalakas, or gatekeepers, called Jaya and Vijaya, who guard the entrance to the Lord’s abode.

The temple also has a shrine, called the Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple , which is dedicated to Lord Varaha, the boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have given the Tirumala Hills to Lord Venkateswara. The devotees are supposed to visit this shrine before visiting the main temple, as per the tradition. The shrine has an idol of Lord Varaha, along with his consort, Goddess Lakshmi.

The Pallava, Chola and Pandya dynasties that ruled this region between the 6th and 9th centuries made large contributions to the temple. It continued to be developed in phases by successive dynasties of the Vijayanagara Empire. However, from 1339 to 1351, conflict between Vidyanagara king Prolaya Vema Reddi and the Maisur king led to its closure for 12 years. It was rebuilt again by the emperors of the Vijayanagar dynasty. The temple also went through periods of abandonment due to Muslim invasions in the 15th century before being resurrected again.

How to reach Tirumala Venkateswara Temple

The Tirupati Airport is the nearest domestic airport, located around 40 kilometres from Tirumala Hills. Direct buses are available to Tirumala from major cities like Hyderabad, Vellore, Mumbai and Bangalore. Trains connect Tirupati railway station to most Indian metro cities, from where one can take a bus ride to Tirumala, which takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. It is also possible to trek up to Tirumala on foot along a 6 kilometre pathway.

Which temple to visit first in Tirumala

It is considered ideal to first visit the Varahaswami Temple, dedicated to Lord Varaha incarnation of Lord Vishnu with the idol having sentimental significance being centuries old. Here, pilgrims bathe in the Pushkarni holy tank before proceeding towards other temples. The two important temples closest to Tirumala Temple that can be covered are Sri Venkateswara Temple and Sri Padmavathi Temple.

What to see inside the temple

Sprawling over 2.4 acres, the architecture of the Tirumala Temple is Dravidian with some elements borrowed from Chalukyan style as well. The temple complex consists of two walled enclosures. The outer enclosure contains the Dhvajastambha (flagstaff) and major structures like the Mahadvara gopuram.

Moving inwards, the inner enclosure has two gopurams that lead to the Garba Griha – the inner most sanctum housing the main deity of Lord Venkateswara in a standing posture. Surrounding it are other shrines of deities like Krishna, Rama among others.

The temple decor includes exquisite stone carvings of deities on pillars and sculptures adorning the walls of the inner precincts. Intricate flower carvings and patterns are seen on the ceiling right above the sanctum. The golden stupa over the main tower glitters beautifully, rendering a divine sight after sunset. Visitors can also admire the temple tank called Pushkarni and the Dwajasthambam which stands over 50 feet tall right outside the Mahadvara Gopuram.

Why Tirumala Temple is famous

The Tirumala Temple is considered to be the abode of Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as Lord Venkateswara making it one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites. As per mythology it is believed to be the site where Lord Venkateswara manifested his divine form in person for his devotees during Kali Yuga. Hence the antiquity of the temple coupled with the residing deity’s form as primordial divinity contributes majorly to its fame.

The other key aspect driving Tirumala Temple’s popularity is the staggering footfall it receives every day. Being India’s and world’s most visited worship place with estimated daily visitors averaging anywhere between 50,000 to 100,000, it has gained international fame over time. Facilitated with superior infrastructure to handle millions of annual visitors, the temple is renowned for efficient organisation of worship to devotees. These factors have amplified its popularity through word of mouth as well.

Significance as a pilgrimage site

As the adobe of Venkateswara form of Lord Vishnu, the temple holds immense religious significance. Besides, the statue idol form or Vigraha of the Lord here is also ancient dating back to the 10th century AD. It is also believed to have manifested on its own from the slopes of Venkatadri Hill in antiquity.

Owing to the self-manifested or Swayambhu status of the deity, it is revered greatly by worshippers. Furthermore, Puranic legends add to the temple’s sanctity as the site where Lord Vishnu married Padmavathi during Dvapara Yuga after manifesting in person. Hence, Tirumala Temple bears unique importance for Vaishnavites as the literal dwelling of the Lord that devotees aspire to reach.

Uniqueness of the deity Venkateswara

The idol of the presiding deity Lord Venkateswara is unique in that it stands around eight feet tall and depicts Lord Vishnu in an unusually young avatar believed to be around 16 years of age. It portrays him with four hands carrying a conch, discus, lotus and mace while bearing a tilak on the forehead and long tresses falling down.

Moreover, the Utsava Vigraham or processional idol of Lord Venkateswara is also exclusive and greatly celebrated. Weighing approximately 5 tonnes, the idol is 3 metres tall but has no embedded supporting rods as is the case with most heavy processional statues. Adorned lavishly with precious metals and dazzling jewellery during festival processions, the imposing sight arouses awe and spiritual ecstasy among devotees. Hence, such exceptional traits add to the uniqueness of Lord Venkateswara as manifested in this shrine.

Tirumala Venkateswara Temple stands tall as one of the most ancient, popular and affluent places of worship in the world. Its history from the 10th century to present times reflects phases of ruination by wars and invaders yet revival every single time by devoted rulers. Nestled amidst the stunning hills of Tirumala, it not only holds religious significance but also offers a sensory and architectural spiritual experience to all visitors regardless of faith. The highly venerated Swamy Vari or Lord Venkateswara continues to magnetically draw millions to his divine abode annually, reaffirming Tirumala Temple as the people’s temple.

About Temple

Sthala puranam :.

This pilgrimage centre is called "Dwaraka Tirumala" after the great saint, "Dwaraka" who located the self manifested idol of Lord "Sri Venkateswara" after severe penance in a ‘Valmikam’ (ant hill). The devotees call Sri Venkateswara as Kaliyuga Vaikunta Vasa. This place is also called “Chinna Tirupati”.

As per Sastras North Indian rivers like Ganges and Yamuna are considered to be more and more holy as they go up to the origin and south Indian rivers like Krishna and Godavary are more and more holy as they go down the river to its mouth to the Sea. It is why there are numerous shrines and holy bathing ghats, at close intervals, on both sides of the great grand rivers Krishna and Godavary in their lower regions.

The region covered by our Dwaraka Tirumala is commanding the top most conspicuous position in India, being garlanded by these two great Indian rivers Krishna and Godavary, as pointed out by Brahma Purana.

The devotees who wish to go and offer their donations, or tonsures or any other offerings to Lord Venkateswara, Lord of Tirumala Tirupati, called as “Pedda Tirupati”, due to some reason, if they are unable to go there, they can offer their donations, prayers and worship in Dwaraka Tirumala temple.

Dwaraka Tirumala is a famous temple from the ancient times. According to some Puranas, the temple is popular even in Kruta yuga and is still attracting the devotees. According to Brahma Purana, Aja Maharaja, the Grand father of Lord Sri Rama also worshiped Lord Venkateswara for his marriage. On his way to the ‘Swayamvaram’ of Indumati, he passed by the temple. He did not offer prayers in the temple. The bride Indumati garlanded him, but he had to face a battle with the kings who came to the Swayamvaram. He realized that the battle was thrust on him for ignoring the temple on the way. After realizing this, Aja Maharaja prayed to the Lord Venkateswara. Suddenly the kings stopped the battle.

It is a great wonder to see two main idols under one Vimana Sikharam. One idol is a full and complete statue. The other is a half statue of the upper portion of the form of the Lord. The upper potion of the form is a self-manifested idol located by Sage "Dwaraka". The saints of the yore felt the prayers to the Lord are not complete without worshipping His holy feet. So, the saints joined together and installed a full statue behind the self-manifested idol, to worship the feet of the Lord according to Vaikhanasa Agamam.

It is believed that the prayers to the smaller statue of the Lord will lead to Moksha, and the big form stands for Dharma, Artha and Kama. The Tiru kalyanotsavam is celebrated twice a year. One for the self manifested idol in the month of “Vaisakha” and the other for the installed idol in the month of “Aswayuja”.

MAGNIFICIENCE OF THE SANCTUM SANCTORUM:

On entering the sanctum sanctorum, one feels a most inspiring and enchanting experience. The presiding mythological deity Lord Venkateswara is visible upto the Bust size and the lower portion is imagined to be in the earth. The holy feet are said to be offered to Bali Chakravarthi in “Patala” for his daily worship. The full size idol of Lord Sri Venkateswara standing at the back of the main idol is said to have been installed by the great social reformer Srimad Ramanuja of the 11 th century. The idols of Padmavathi and Nanchari are installed in the Arthamandapa facing east. This is a full equipped shrine to be a Divyasthala.

COMBINATION OF SIVA AND VISHNU ON ADISESHA:

The most peculiar aspect here is that the hill appearing to be a serpant in form, even to the naked eye, confirms the mythological version that Anantha, the serpant king has taken up this terrestial form of serpant hill and is carrying God Mallikarjuna on the hood and Lord Venkateswara on the tail, thus creating a happy and harmonious compromise of Vaishnavism and Saivism at a single place.

RENOVATION AND ORIGIN OF THE PRESENT STRUCTURE:

The magnificent monuments like, Vimana, Mantapa, Gopura, Prakara etc., stand to the credit of Dharma Appa Raoa recent ruler (1762 – 1827) and the golden ornaments and silver vahanas stand to the credit of the generous queen Rani Chinnamma Rao of Mylavaram, Krishna Dist. (1877 – 1902). These things immortalize the glory of the shrine.

The main temple is a masterpiece of South Indian Architecture with its five-storied main Rajagopuram facing the south and three other gopurams on the other three sides. The Vimana is in the Nagara style and old Mukhamantapa is extended to a great extent to suit the present day needs. There are several temples of Alwars attached to the Prakara on all sides. The whole spacious compound has been paved with stone and flower trees are grown in an order as if to feast the eye of the pilgrims.
