Recent tour reviews

Disappointing! After spending $340 each for VIP tix (not even front row/meet and greet) the show only lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes, probably the shortest concert I have ever attended. The guys seemed a little tired and bored, which is understandable after 50 years together or possibly because they just flew in from England. The sound system wasn't the best either, way too much bass overriding their vocals.

ZZ Top performance was amazing.

The venue had some issues. The sound was very imbalanced in the beginning, almost could not hear Billy Gibons voice.

There was some trouble with the crowd too. Some people were fighting over standing versus sitting (it's a rock concert not the symphony, get up and dance I say!). In my opinion the usher was a bit too harsh on the dancing people. He was very rude to the ladies dancing and another guy ( just attending the show) even grabbed the arm of one of them. At that point it was way over the line. The people complaining about the non sitting attendees were very inappropriate (even got in my face), but nothing happened to them.

I am not sure about the finer details, but I do not believe the ushers were well trained in de-escalating conflict.

Well, they did not disappoint. After the warm-up act, Tim Montana (who, by the way, fit right in and was worth seeing), ZZ Top came out and were very loud, played all their hits, and were well worth the price of admission. Billy Gibbons even called out our fair city Cheyenne on more than one occasion. They were very entertaining and sounded great after all these years. Great time.

ZZ Top Kicks Off Tour With Lynyrd Skynyrd: Set List and Interview

ZZ Top launched their Sharp-Dressed Simple Man co-headlining tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd on Friday evening at the iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Texas legends delivered a tight 16-song set which touched on moments from their entire catalog. 1983's Eliminator recently hit the 40-year mark, while 1973's Tres Hombres will celebrate its own 50-year milestone next week. Both were well-represented during the night's performance.

You can see the complete set list, as well as videos, below.

The current tour marks a reunion for the two groups, who toured together in 1999 and 2000, with a brief reprise in 2019 when Lynyrd Skynyrd opened two dates on ZZ Top's 50th anniversary tour. But the roots go much further back for the two bands. "It was kind of a rekindling of kindred spirits. It’s a little known fact that ZZ Top gave Lynyrd Skynyrd one of their first official paying gigs, way, way back in the day," guitarist and vocalist Billy Gibbons laughs during a conversation with UCR following the first show. "We had an enjoyable moment to compare notes over five decades of sharing the stage with Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s been a really interesting and incredibly long run."

It's easy to think the Florida heat could have kept the fur-covered guitars in the road cases. But as ZZ Top broke into "Legs," the fabled instruments were right there, now representing a signature part of the song's legacy 40 years later . "It’s over 100 degrees," Gibbons confirms. "But you know, we’ve done it before and we’ll do it again. Somebody said, 'A fur guitar in this heat? Are you crazy?' I said, 'Well, we’ve been crazy for a long time. I think we’ll get by.'"

Watch ZZ Top Perform 'Legs' in West Palm Beach

Some of the most poignant moments of the night were provided by the people who weren't there at the gig. Though Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington passed away earlier this year , he was still very much part of the concert. "I was walking across the stage just now and Gary’s setup is still in place," Gibbons shares. "What was really warming...was that last night, I was standing at the microphone and Lynyrd Skynyrd had just left the stage. I looked down and there was a piece of tape marking the spot that Gary would occupy. So he’s still with us in no small terms. All of those guys, you know, it’s that Skynyrd thing. They live on."

The Sharp-Dressed Simple Man tour, which sees the two bands alternating as headliners, continues tonight in Alpharetta, Georgia, before moving to Tennessee in the coming week.

zz top australian tour 2023

The Taupō Summer Concert and Gibbston Valley Winery Summer Concert in Queenstown were the places to be in February 2023 with over 30,000 fans rocking to the awesome Summer Concert Tour international line up of ZZ Top, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Stone Temple Pilots and The Angels.

It was 35 years since ZZ TOP played their epic New Zealand show where they performed to a reported crowd of over 80,000 at Western Springs in 1987. These Texan Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s are synonymous with beards, black sunnies and spinning guitars, which they bought with them in spades to each show. ZZ Top are famous for their mix of rock, blues, and boogie, with hugely popular albums such as Eliminator and Afterburner, which between them spent over two years on the NZ Charts, along with having produced instantly recognisable hits such as Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin’, Legs and La Grange.

Pat Benater & Neil Giraldo

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees PAT BENATAR & NEIL GIRALDO are one of the most formidable power couples in rock history. With no less than 14 songs having reached the NZ Top 50 singles charts, and spanning a career of over 43 years, hit songs like Heartbreaker , Love Is a Battlefield and We Belong are just some of the classic’s that rocked concert goers when we welcomed them back to New Zealand after last performing at the Summer Concert Tour 10 years ago in 2013.

Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots brought a 90’s flavour to the tour with the band’s unique sound, considered to be a blending of alternative rock of the 80’s and 90’s with the hard rock of the 70’s. Lead singer Jeff Gutt sure got the crowd going with hits including Interstate Love Song , Plush and Vaseline , all of which have featured in the NZ single charts through the mid 90’s.

Originally scheduled to perform at the 2021 Summer Concert Tour, THE ANGELS lay claim to being one of Australia’s longest lasting bands, dating as far back as 1976 when they first released Am I Ever Gonna See You Face Again. Their relationship with the audience is everything to them, and their standard of live music gave a rocking start to each show when they performed the likes of Fashion and Fame , Take A Long Line and No Secrets .

Covid-19 forced the Taupō Summer Concert to take a break earlier this year, with the 2022 edition cancelled, but the organisers have announced its return next year, featuring some impressive international acts.

The team at Greenstone Entertainment is "super-excited" the Summer Concert Tour is back for 2023, today announcing a huge lineup of international acts who will be taking centre stage in February.

The organisers said in a press release, "four fantastic international acts" will star at the Gibbston Valley Winery Summer Concert, Taupō Summer Concert and Whitianga Summer Concert in February - ZZ Top, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Stone Temple Pilots, and The Angels.

ZZ TOP ANNOUNCE FIRST EUROPEAN TOUR IN FIVE YEARS

For the first time since 2019, ZZ Top is set to play a slate of tour dates in Europe and the UK. The trio, famously known as “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” have concert and festival dates in nine countries starting June 28th at the Dalhall Festival in Rattvik, Sweden. Over the course of the three weeks that follow, the band will make tour stops in Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, France, UK, and Switzerland. They’ll be playing a total of five dates in Germany with a stop at London’s OVO Arena Wembly as well as Le Zenith at Parc La Villette in Paris. Tickets will go on sale on December 15, 2023, at 10 AM.

Since the founding of ZZ Top on the last day of 1969, they have gone on to become one of the top concert and recording attractions in the world, highlighted by a string of hit records including their 1973 breakthrough “La Grange” as well as “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs” and many more. Their album catalog including Tres Hombres, Deguello, Eliminator and others has sold more than 60 million units worldwide and their status as a top tier in-person attraction remains undiminished. ZZ Top’s concert audiences are typically multi-generational, reflecting their enduring role as blues rock standard bearers for more than half a century. Their ability to seamlessly blend grungy guitar-based blues with synth-pop solidified their place as rock icons as has their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by none other than Keith Richards.

In 2021, ZZ TOP faced a significant loss with the passing of Dusty Hill. At his urging, Elwood Francis stepped up to fill the void, bringing exceptional musicianship and coincidental facial hair, making him a worthy successor to the legendary bassist. Fronted by the legendary Billy F Gibbons and underpinned by rhythmic force of Frank Beard (a/k/a “The Man With No Beard”) with Elwood on bass for the past few years, the group continues to redefine their sonic approach.

ZZ TOP’s latest album, RAW, released in July 2022, pays homage to their roots, and serves as a poignant tribute to the late Dusty Hill. The album, recorded at the historic Gruene Hall in Texas, captures the essence of the band’s 2019 Grammy-nominated documentary, ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas. Fans can expect a journey through their career-spanning tunes, marking a significant return to their musical origins.

Billy Gibbons commented on the tour announcement, “It’s been a while since we’ve been able to check in with our European fans, so it goes without saying that we’re excited about coming back this summer. We’re looking forward to a good time and that goes for both those in the audience and on stage.”

The Summer Concert Series, Taupō NZ, 2023

The Summer Concert Series feat. ZZ Top, Pat Benatar & Neil Geraldo, Stone Temple Pilots & The Angels

4th february 2023 riverside park, taupō, new zealand.

Review by Bridget Herlihy  with photography by Doug Peters .

With unprecedented weather events hitting the upper half of the North Island over the last ten days, many anxiously watched weather updates and kept all fingers and toes crossed that the three Summer Concert Tour for 2023 dates would go ahead. Unfortunately the Whitianga stop ended up being cancelled due to the weather related damage in the Coromandel, so all eyes were on Taupo to deliver the goods for the North Island. Fortuitously, in spite of showers being forecast for the day, the weather gods smiled upon Taupo on Saturday with an abundance of sunshine and heat.

Music festivals are synonymous with Kiwi summers, and by 10am hundreds had gathered outside of the venue armed with chairs, chilly bins and picnic baskets. With the cancellation of the 2022 concert tour (courtesy of the pandemic), thousands of punters were chomping at the bit for the return of the tour. The Taupo amphitheatre is a formidable venue for an event of this magnitude, and with the sun already beating down, many cleverly made a beeline for spots under the trees (which became prime real estate as the day went on).

As people continued to pour into the venue, Taupo-based band False Heights had the coveted opening slot for the day. The duo of April and Ashley Pirie delivered an enjoyable set of melodic acoustic tunes that kept the growing crowd entertained and tapping their feet. Being first on the bill is not always an easy task, but False Heights did a superb job – keeping the crowd both engaged and entertained with a series of their catchy and compelling original songs.

Beloved Australian band The Angels were the first international act of the day to take the stage, and suffice to say they kept the venue rocking for the entirety of their performance. The band had been on the bill for the 2022 tour, and although it was unable to proceed they promised to return for the 2023 tour. Clad all in black, it appeared that they made it their mission to make up for lost time with their energetic set. Formed in Adelaide in 1974, The Angels have a rich musical history, complete with a number of name and line-up changes. With brothers Rick and John Brewster on guitars and Dave Gleeson on vocals, it could be argued that the band remains in their prime. Kicking off with ‘Ivory Stairs’ from 1979’s ‘No Exit’, the band keep the rock n roll with a set full of classics including ‘Fashion and Fame’, ‘Am I Ever Going To See Your Face Again’ and, or course, ‘No Secrets’. It was immediately clear that The Angels were very much one of the big draw cards of the day, as the crowd sung along to every song at the top of their lungs. The Brewster brothers were in fine form, with their guitar playing prowess on full display, while energetic front man Gleeson strutted about the stage, even performing a cartwheel at one point. The band may be almost 50 years old, but they still have it in spades.

Listening to the banter from the crowd it seemed that many people had come especially to see Stone Temple Pilots; one of the beloved rock bands of the 90s and early 2000s. Admittedly, having missed their last visit to NZ, I too was keen to see foursome live for the first time. To say that their set was a highlight of the day would be a significant understatement. Appearing on stage they immediately stating how happy they were to be back on our shores, and wasted no time in getting proceedings started, with the opening bars of ‘Wicked Garden’ from their debut album ‘Core’ ringing throughout the amphitheatre. Quickly followed by ‘Vaseline’ and ‘Big Bang Baby’, STP illustrated that they are as slick and polished as they have ever been. Dean and Robert DeLeo (bass and guitar respectively) are drummer Eric Kretz and exceptional musicians, while front man Jeff Gutt possesses formidable charisma and stage presence, not to mention an epic voice which more than does justice to the STP back catalogue.

Having been with the band for five years, he can hardly be considered the ‘new guy’, and given that he had some sizeable shoes to fill by becoming the Stone Temple Pilots front man, he was – and is – exceptional. It was touching that he took a moment mid-set to acknowledge the contribution of the late Scott Weiland to the band, which was fitting seeing as the set was largely comprised of material from the band’s first two albums. Almost effortlessly he amped up the crowd and kept them energised and dancing in the mosh pit in the scorching sun, reminding the crowd to keep hydrated, and that surely beer is good for hydration and must belong to a food group. In terms of audience engagement he was second to none, as he spent all ‘Down’ on the barrier at the front of the crowd, quite literally singing over the top of the audience, while trying on a selection of hats from the audience, settling on a rather dapper white number. The set largely consisted of the band’s ‘hits’ and fan favourites, including ‘Big Empty’, ‘Plush’, ‘Interstate Love Song’, ‘Crackerman’ and ‘Dead and Bloated’. Before ending the set with ‘Sex Type Thing’, he stated “we love your country, and we are all going to move here”. The sooner the better.

After a brief break, and a much need opportunity to rehydrate, beloved Pat Benatar and husband/writing partner Neil Giraldo took to the stage. Hundreds had repositioned themselves from their respective perches to the front of the stage for the performance, choosing to be close to greatness rather than the relative cool of the shade. The band tore straight into classic ‘All Fired Up’, just as the sound from the PA died. For 30 odd seconds the crowd was left bewildered and begging for the sound to return, which is did just in time for the chorus, eliciting a huge roar of cheers erupted from the crowd. This was only a minor glitch in a day that had otherwise run like clockwork, and the rest of Benatar and Giraldo’s set was flawless. It’s hard to fathom that Benatar turned 70 very recently; her voice remains incredibly powerful and she hit the high notes over and over again without hesitation. She and Giraldo have also just celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary, having met in the studio when Giraldo was introduced to Benatar as a prospective guitar player for her band in 1974. The rest, as they say, is history. Their chemistry on stage and in their shared compositions is evident, and is a joy to behold.

Benatar also gushed about how happy they were to be in NZ, as at one point they were afraid that they weren’t going to be able to make it due to the weather. Needless to say the sold-out crowd were in agreement that they were over the moon to see the duo again after a decade. The set drew from their expansive back catalogue, and as Benatar admitted, “one of the things about being around so long is that you have a shitload of songs to choose from, and you can turn them upside down”. Which is exactly what they did with an acoustic rendition of ‘We Belong’ with Girlado at the grand piano, and ‘Shadows In The Night’ which saw Neil on acoustic guitar. Needless to say, these re-imaginings of the songs were exquisite.

The hits kept coming, with ‘We Live For Love’, ‘Promises In The Dark’, “Helter Skelter’, and a ferocious ‘Everybody Lay Down’ featured in the hour long set. Of course, no Benatar/Giraldo set would be complete without ‘Love Is A Battlefield’, which brought goose bumps and a tear to the eye. Finishing off with a medley of ‘Heartbreaker’ and Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring Of Fire’, many were left in absolute awe of Benatar’s voice and Giraldo’s epic guitar playing skills, onslaught of riffs and soaring solos, and quite rightly so. Not one iota of their sonic power has diminished over time.

After another brief break, the sound of a revving hot rod engine blasted out across the amphitheatre, heralding the imminent arrival of Mr Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top. Gibbons really needs no introduction, with ZZ Top having become firmly entrenched in popular culture decades ago. The beards, the guitars, and their own trademark of blues infused rock is unmistakeable. Sadly co-vocalist and bassist Dusty Hill passed away in 2021, but the band’s guitar tech Elwood Francis has been playing bass with the band since, at Hill’s request.

Gibbons and co rolled out a bevy of infamous ZZ Top hits as the sun began to retreat from the amphitheatre, including ‘Sharp Dressed Man’, ‘Jesus Just Left For Chicago’ ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’, and ‘Legs’. Each and every song was met with ecstatic cheers of delight, a clear indicator of the seemingly timeless appeal of ZZ Top. It was a treat to see Gibbons in the flesh; a man who clearly still loves entertaining the crowd and playing good old fashioned guitar rock.

The only band that was afforded an encore (the perks of being the top of the bill), ZZ Top finished off with blistering renditions of ‘Brown Sugar’, ‘Tube Snake Boogie’ and classic ‘La Grange’ before it was closing time.

Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces as they went back to collect their chilly bins and chairs at the end of the set, they knew that they had just experienced a line-up that was extremely special. Credit must go to the tour organisers Greenstone Entertainment, who kept the crowd well informed about the day’s schedule and location of amenities throughout the day, and kept things running smoothly. If you haven’t had the good fortune of attending a Summer Concert Tour, make sure that you get along to one. There really is nothing quite like it.

Awesome concert, great job with enough amenities and food and beverages. Great line up, loved Pat Benatar. Saw ZZ top in 87 and was looking forward to seeing them again. Lynyrd Skymrd and ZZ Top concert images

If you’ve always wanted to sing along to “Sweet Home Alabama” and “La Grange” on the same night, you’re in luck next year.

From July 21 through Sept. 17, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top are hitting amphitheaters, pavilions and arenas as part of their 23-concert “The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour.”

On the run, both Rock and Roll Hall of Fame groups will be celebrating half-century milestones.

Lynyrd’s Skynyrd’s seminal debut album “Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘Nérd ‘Skin-‘Nérd'” and ZZ Top’s “Tres Hombres” both turn 50-years-old in 2023.

And while they won’t drop into the Big Apple to commemorate the historic occasion, the duo will come close to the City that Never Sleeps near the end of the tour.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top are giggin’ at Holmdel, NJ’s PNC Bank Arts Center on Sept. 10 and a week later, they’ll wrap up the tour on Sept. 17 at Camden, NJ’s Freedom Mortgage Pavilion .

Now, if you’re as excited as we are to hear “Free Bird” live and see what ZZ Top’s beards look like now and can’t wait until tickets officially go on sale, you can grab tix for the show closest to you  as early as today .

While inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster to the general public until Friday, Dec. 16, folks who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can go ahead and purchase on Vivid Seats before seats are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

All that being said, there’s a lot more to know about the tour.

Keep scrollin’ and we’ll fill you in on all the essentials.

Prior to the run, ZZ Top is scheduled to play two shows with 89-year-old country icon Willie Nelson on April 14-15 in New Braunfels, TX.

Before the headliners take the stage, audiences will be treated to a performance from Uncle Kracker.

You may remember the Southern-fried singer-songwriter from his early-aughts breakout hits like “Follow Me” and “Drift Away,” but he’s been going hard releasing new music as recently as this year.

If you’re jonesing for some Uncle Kracker or just want to hear what he sounds like these days, check out his 2022 single “Smile” featuring Positive Vibrations.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top set list

In 2022, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top conducted solo headlining tours of their own.

Skynyrd shows are typically comprised of 10-15 songs and include the occasional AC/DC cover along with all the hits they’re known for like “Tuesday’s Gone,” “Sweet Home Alabama” and, of course, “Free Bird.”

As for ZZ Top, expect all the classics you know and love— “Tush,” “Legs, “La Grange”— and some surprising covers from Billy Gibbons and co. too.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top Announce 2023 North American Co-Headlining Tour

Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top have announced a 2023 North American co-headlining tour.

“The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour” kicks off on July 21st in West Palm Beach, Florida, and runs through September 17th in Camden, New Jersey. Uncle Kracker will provide support.

Artist pre-sales go live on Tuesday (December 13th) at 10 a.m. local time with the code SKYNYRD50 , while a Live Nation pre-sale begins Thursday (December 15th) using the code CHEER . General sales begin Friday (December 16th) at 10 a.m. local time. You can pick up tickets via Ticketmaster .

The tour will mark 50 years since Lynyrd Skynyrd dropped their legendary 1973 debut album (pronounced ‘lĕh-‘nérd ‘skin-‘nérd) , which features iconic songs such as “Gimme Three Steps,” “Tuesday’s Gone,” and the guitar powerhouse “Free Bird.”

“It’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about,” said Skynyrd’s Johnny Van Zant via a press statement. “There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.”

Added founding guitarist Gary Rossington, who still makes select live appearances with the band: “We’re still standing, Still keeping the music going. We wanted to do the guys who aren’t with us any more proud, and keep the name proud, too.”

Meanwhile, ZZ Top continue to forge on following the passing of bassist Dusty Hill in 2021. Elwood Francis has assumed bass duties alongside singer-guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard. Consequence caught the band’s October show in Port Chester, New York, where they sounded as sharp as ever .

For the first time since 2019, ZZ Top is set to play a slate of tour dates in Europe and the UK.  The trio, famously known as “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” have concert and festival dates in nine countries starting June 28 th  at the Dalhall Festival in Rattvik, Sweden.

Their album catalog including  Tres Hombres ,  Deguello,   Eliminator  and others has sold more than 60 million units worldwide and their status as a top tier in-person attraction remains undiminished.

The album, recorded at the historic Gruene Hall in Texas, captures the essence of the band’s 2019 Grammy-nominated documentary,  ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas . Fans can expect a journey through their career-spanning tunes, marking a significant return to their musical origins.   Billy Gibbons commented on the tour announcement, “It’s been a while since we’ve been able to check in with our European fans, so it goes without saying that we’re excited about coming back this summer.  We’re looking forward to a good time and that goes for both those in the audience and on stage.”   ZZ Top Summer 2024 Tour dates   28-Jun Friday Rattvik, Sweden Dalhalla Festival 29-Jun Saturday Oslo, Norway Tons of Rock Festival 01-Jul Monday Arhus, Denmark Tivoli 02-Jul Tuesday Halle, Germany Peissnitzinsel 03-Jul Wednesday Sperken, Austria Castle Clam 05-Jul Friday Bonn, Germany Kunst!rasen 06-Jul Saturday Berlin Germany Zitadelle 08-Jul Monday Amsterdam, Holland AFAS Live 09-Jul Tuesday Paris, France Zenith Paris – La Villette 11-Jul Thursday London UK OVO Arena Wembley 13-Jul Saturday Wolfsburg, Germany Autostadt Summer Festival 14-Jul Sunday Munich, Germany Tollwood Festival 16-Jul Tuesday Sion, Switzerland Sion Festival   TICKET INFORMATION:   On Sale Date: December 15, 2023, at 10 AM Ticket Purchase: Available at  livenation.co.uk
