How to watch ‘Pokémon The Series’ in order

Pokémon  has been around for over two decades now and, ever since its 1996 debut, has become a global phenomenon, with a unique blend of strategic gameplay, creative character design, and enticing ‘catch them all’ premise that has captured the imaginations of millions. With its captivating gameplay and an ever-growing roster of creatures , Pokémon has evolved and expanded over the course of nine generations, engaging players with its compelling gameplay and broad appeal.

So far, the franchise doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. This means that there will undoubtedly be more content hitting our screens in the coming years, especially if even more lovable Pokémon are added to the franchise’s Pokédex. But how can you watch new content if you haven’t religiously followed the series and films ?

Pokémon: Master Journeys has bid a heartbreaking farewell to Ash Ketchum and Pikachu. The Pokémon Company anticipates its newest series, Pokémon Horizons: The Series , which will be the first-ever Pokémon season not to feature Ash nor Pikachu . Instead, the story will focus on two new protagonists, Liko and Roy. The debut episodes, combined in an hour-long special, aired in Japan on April 14, 2023. Unfortunately, there has been no official announcement for when Pokémon Horizons will air overseas, so there is currently no legal way for Pokemon fans to watch the first episode outside of Japan.

As always, we’ll keep you updated as news breaks of the series’ migration to the US and beyond.

First, we'll show you how to watch the Pokemon series in order – including all 26 seasons, as well as the end of Ash's journey and the start of Liko's adventure in Pokemon Horizons: The Series . There's also the full list of Pokemon films in release order, so you can watch them alongside your mega Poke-binge.

From there, we’ll present our sprawling, epic list of how to watch Pokemon in chronological order. That includes how all the movies and specials (roughly) fit in, right through to Ash's final episode . It’s not an exact science, but it’s a fun marathon for completionists. Gotta watch ‘em all, right?

We'll also clue you in on where you can watch every Pokemon season. When you take into account the removal of the Pokemon TV streaming service , it becomes even harder to track everything down so knowing your Rokus from your Tubis will become essential if you want the full picture.

The below guide also covers other non-essential episodes, including some shorts and non-canon specials – such as ONAs like the brilliant Pokemon Origins. Above is our guide on how to watch all of Pokemon in order . Yep, all 26 seasons. We start at Ash’s adventures in Kanto, before heading to the Orange Islands, then on to Johto; Hoenn; Sinnoh; Unova; Kalos; Galar – before ending Ash’s journey. Liko, from the Paldea region, is the current protagonist in Pokemon Horizons.

Ordinarily, we would put a simple episode count next to each of these seasons – but that’s a fool’s errand here. Confusingly, the episode count differs by region. Some episodes have been pulled, while a couple of entries have never aired in the West. As such, we've kept it simple and only refer to the overall season name and number.

How to watch the Pokemon movies in order (release date)

Pokemon

To date, there have been 23 animated Pokemon movies. The first 19 up to Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel are all part of the mainline Pokemon series. While they are essentially canon, they rarely – if ever – impact the main series, and can be skipped if need be.

The movies I Choose You, The Power of Us, and Secrets of the Jungle all take place in an alternate timeline from the main series and are either re-tellings, re-imaginings, or new adventures with Ash. It’s also worth noting that Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution is a CGI remake of the first movie – but we’ll get into the weeds of that more with our chronological order later on. On top of that, the Pokemon Black/White movies are two movies with slight variations. We’d recommend choosing just one and not both.

Ready? Here’s the complete order of Pokemon movies by release date.

  • Pokemon: The First Movie (1999)
  • Pokemon: The Movie 2000 (2000)
  • Pokemon 3: The Movie (2001)
  • Pokemon 4Ever (2002)
  • Pokemon Heroes (2003)
  • Pokemon: Jirachi, Wish Maker (2004)
  • Pokemon: Destiny Deoxys (2005)
  • Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew (2006)
  • Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (2007)
  • Pokemon: The Rise of Darkrai (2008)
  • Pokemon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior (2009)
  • Pokemon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life (2009)
  • Pokemon: Zoroark – Master of Illusions (2011)
  • Pokemon: Black – Victini and Reshiram/Pokemon: White – Victini and Zekrom (2011)
  • Pokemon: Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice (2012)
  • Pokemon: Genesect and the Legend Awakened (2013)
  • Pokemon: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction (2014)
  • Pokemon: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (2015)
  • Pokemon: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel (2016)

How to watch Pokemon in chronological order – including movies

Pokemon

Now we’re getting into the tricky stuff. While Pokemon can be watched in chronological order alongside the movies, it’s not always clear where each feature-length adventure slides into the core narrative. But there are clues and hints to help guide us, and we’ve done our best to present the complete saga below.

The overall series is also split into eight eras: the original series, Ruby and Sapphire, Diamond and Pearl, Black and White, XY, Sun and Moon, Journeys, and Horizons. As of writing, however, not all episodes have been released in the West. We're still waiting for the conclusion of Ultimate Journeys and Horizons. Expect them to arrive across 2023 and 2024.

To help make the list seem less daunting, we’ve split everything up into those separate parts. We’ve also tagged each list entry with the episode number of that season, as per Pokemon’s website. E.g. Pokemon: The Johto Journeys may start at episode 105 overall, but we’ll stick to the official numbering convention of Johto Journeys episode 1, and so on – as that’s how it’s listed on various streaming platforms.

Alongside our general list, there’s also three movies that consist of an alternate timeline/retelling of Ash’s adventures. These should be watched separately from the main series.

As mentioned earlier, there’s also a CGI remake of the first Pokemon movie. Purists may prefer the original, but the choice is yours. We’ll also include certain story-heavy specials such as Mewtwo Returns in this list.

How to watch the Pokemon specials and shorts in order – a quick guide to Generations, Origins, and the ONAs

Pokemon Generations

Away from the main series, there are multiple Pokemon specials, spin-offs, and shorts for fans to watch.

The vast majority of these can be watched in any order and don’t fit into canon. However, we’ll deal with the ones that do fit into canon first.

Mewtwo Returns is the first chronological special, taking place midway through the Johto League arc. The Pokemon Chronicles trilogy titled The Legend of Thunder all fall during the Master Quest series. The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon – released for Pokemon’s 10th anniversary – can be watched alongside the Ruby and Sapphire series. Finally, The Pokemon Mega Evolution Specials can be watched during Pokemon XY, with ‘The Legend of X, Y, and Z’ fitting neatly into the end of the Pokemon XY series arc.

The order of those specials are:

  • Mewtwo Returns (Johto League)
  • Pokemon Chronicles: The Legend of Thunder (Master Quest) [3 episodes]
  • The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon (Ruby and Sapphire)
  • The Pokemon Mega Evolution Specials (Pokemon XY) [4 episodes]
  • The Legend of X, Y, and Z (After Pokemon XY)

On top of those, here are the other Pokemon specials and series to seek out.

Pokemon Generations is an anthology series based on Game Freak ’s video games; Pokemon Twilight Wings is a series of YouTube shorts inspired by Sword and Shield; Poketoon are YouTube shorts first made available in the West in 2022; Pokemon Evolutions is a series of standalone episodes inspired by the eight Pokemon regions and, finally, Pokemon Hisuian Snow takes on the Hisui region from Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

There’s also the four-part Pokemon Origins series, which adapts Pokemon Red and Blue’s Gen 1 story where Red battles Team Rocket and the Elite Four.

The full list of spin-offs and shows to watch are below.

  • Pokemon Generations
  • Pokemon: Twilight Wings
  • Pokemon Evolutions
  • Pokemon: Hisuain Snow
  • Pokemon Origins

Finally, there are multiple Pikachu shorts – some attached to movies, some not available to watch in the West. It can be tricky, if not impossible, to seek all of them out, so it’s not really worth listing them all here. The most famous is Pikachu’s Vacation, which was shown before The First Movie.

There are also three shorts that serve as prologues to movies, but aren’t essential viewing. They are:

  • Mewtwo – Prologue to Awakening (Pokemon: Genesect and the Legend Awakened)
  • Diancie – Princess of the Diamond Domain (Pokemon: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction)
  • Hoopa – The Mischief Pokemon (Pokemon: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages)

Where to watch Pokemon online

Pokemon

Right now, there's no way to watch all of Pokemon on one streaming service. Pokemon TV, the official platform, is shutting down as of March 28, 2024.

In the US, Netflix has season 1 and seasons 23-25 (The Beginning and Journeys respectively), with season 26 - Pokemon Horizons - coming in February 2024.

Prime Video has seasons 3-9 (Gold and Silver and Ruby and Sapphire) and seasons 17-19 (XY). Hulu also has seasons X-Y, Roku has seasons 20-22 (Sun and Moon), and Tubi has seasons 14-16 (Black and White). Diamond and Pearl is also available via Prime Video channels.

In the UK, it's a similarly confused picture. POP has seasons 14-19 and seasons 24-25; BBC iPlayer has seasons 10-16 and seasons 20-22 and the new series Pokemon: Horizons (season 26); Netflix has season 1 and seasons 23-24, and Sky Kids has seasons 3-9 and seasons 14-19.

Amazon is the best destination for the majority of Poke-series. Prime has seasons 14-16 and 20-22, plus seasons 2-9 and 17-19 available via Amazon Channels.

There's also a series of specials and movies available via Pokemon TV, while the complete series can be rented on digital platforms such as Google .

We made it! If you're still in a Poke-mood (and why wouldn't you be?), here's our ranking of the best Pokemon games .

How to Watch Pokémon Movies and Series in Order

Pokemon

Pokémon is certainly one of the most prolific media franchises in history, featuring games, TV series, movies, and films. Even those who are not anime fans know of Pokémon and have at least heard of Pikachu, for instance. But, with so many shows and movies, how are you going to watch them all?

Pokémon is also known as Pocket Monsters in Japan, and it's a massive franchise that started as a couple of video games for the original Game Boy back in 1996. A year later, the Indigo League series was released, and it only grew from there on out.

What's Pokémon About?

Pokémon is a show that features some humans that are Trainers, who have to collect available Pokemon species and train their creatures for battles against other teams.

In December 2020, there will be a new movie released in Japan, named Coco .

It's also worth it to mention the first live-action Pokémon movie, namely  Detective Pikachu , which was released in May 2019. The film is based on a 2018 Nintendo 3DS spin-off game with the same name. It is directed by Rob Letterman and features Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu and Harry Goodman, as well as Justice Smith, who plays Tim Goodman, Kathryn Newton as Lucy Steens, Ken Watanabe as Detective Hideo Yoshida, and Bill Nighy as Howard Clifford.

Also, since we're on the topic of Pokémon, make sure you also play the games - whether they're the Nintendo ones or even Pokémon Go on your phone, you're surely going to enjoy diving into this wonderful world.

How Long Will It Take to Binge-Watch Pokémon?

If you're only going to watch the Pokémon series thus far, you're going to have to spend 21 days, 9 hours, and 30 minutes in front of the screens. We recommend that you split it over a longer period of time to handle this whole list of shows.

If you're also going to watch the movies, you'll spend another 31 hours and 48 minutes.

Pokémon journey

A Pokémon journey is a quest undertaken by a Pokémon Trainer to learn to live and work with Pokémon . In the anime, a person's Pokémon journey can begin as early as the age of 10, when they can first legally apply for a Pokémon Trainer's license . It is at this point that a Pokémon Professor can give them a first partner Pokémon native to their own region , though many people befriend or are given other Pokémon prior to being legally able to be Trainers.

Pokémon Trainers may choose to journey alone or with friends and people they meet along the way. On their journey, Trainers can stay at a Pokémon Center free of charge, where their Pokémon can be healed by the resident Pokémon Center lady .

In the games

journeys order pokemon

The core series games chronicle the Pokémon journey of an individual Trainer, the player , across a region that is dependent on the game being played. The player will often begin a journey around the same time as one or more rivals , whom they will meet at various points through their travels, and may battle against or along with them. This journey is typically focused on defeating the region's eight Pokémon Gyms, defeating the Elite Four , and becoming the Champion , though there are often sidequests along the way. A villainous team will always show up during the journey to impede the player's progress, and often, after the Pokémon League has been conquered, several post-League areas are available to continue the journey.

While sending children alone on a Pokémon journey is a normal part of life in the Pokémon world , many mothers remain understandably hesitant at letting their children grow up.

In the anime

journeys order pokemon

The anime follows the Pokémon journey of Ash Ketchum , who started off with his first Pokémon, a Pikachu , in the first episode , and continues to journey across the world in order to compete in each of the regional Pokémon League competitions. His ultimate goal is to become a Pokémon Master . He is joined by his friends along the way, each with their own goals.

The anime has established that children may apply for their Pokémon Trainer's license , obtain their first Pokémon, and set out on their journey at the age of 10. Ash and many others received their first partner Pokémon from the resident Professor, while some have received theirs from a local Pokémon Center or by other means. Seven-year-old Max , although barred from owning Pokémon, accompanied his sister May on her journey. Sometimes children younger than 10 have been shown to have Pokémon in their possession, notably Iris who had a Drilbur at a young age.

Starting a Pokémon journey is considered a rite of passage for children, and Ash has followed in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather. A journey can continue into adulthood, which is the case for Silver and apparently Ash's father. Adult Trainers, such as Cynthia , may eventually choose to remain in one place rather than continue to travel. Mandy even views an adult on a Pokémon journey as somewhat immature, preferring that they settle down instead.

Pokémon journeys have many different possibilities, with some Trainers choosing to gather a region's Badges from its Pokémon Gyms , their ultimate goal being the Pokémon League challenge. Other Trainers instead choose to become Coordinators , gathering Ribbons by competing in Pokémon Contests with the goal of winning the Grand Festival to become a Top Coordinator . Some other Trainers may choose to become Performers and compete in Pokémon Showcases with the goal of being the Kalos Queen . Others journey in order to learn about and be proficient about certain types of Pokémon while some may choose to journey to pursue certain occupations like Pokémon breeding , Pokémon watching , and Pokémon styling . Regardless of the reason behind the journey, Trainers must learn to work in all sorts of circumstances to become the best in their field.
