What's New

Spring 2024

With an updated website and an exciting announcement on the horizon, we could not be more thrilled to start the 2024 season!

After a winter full of upgrades, M/V Tabasco is standing by to take you on an unforgettable cruise through Newport harbor and Narragansett Bay. Sit back and relax as your knowledgeable crew show you the hidden gems of Newport. Sip your favorite beverages and indulge in picture perfect charcuterie, now complimentary from our friends at Bellevue Boards .

Matt K - TripAdvisor

We have been out in Newport on a few different charter boats, but our experience on Tabasco was simply the best. The boat is a great example of a traditional New England picnic boat and Curtis and his crew were top notch. They have complimentary local drinks on board and have partnered with Bellevue Boards to let you pre-order a charcuterie board ahead of time - the perfect, classy snack on this 1.5 hours cruise. Should you be interested, they are very knowledgeable about the area and are happy to note points of interest and history along the way, or if you prefer, they will let you and you guests talk amongst yourselves instead. This is not a one-size fits all operation, and they are happy to work around your wishes. You can't visit Newport without getting out on the water, and there is no better way than Tabasco!

Sail Newport Sunset Sails & private yacht charters

We have the beautiful 80 foot Schooner Adirondack II and our 48 foot Sloop Eleanor. These sailing boats are a great way to get the company, friends and family out to relax and enjoy each other. Sail through Narragansett Bay aboard one of these yachts and host a party that will be remembered for a lifetime.

We are located in the historic Bowens Wharf. Our cruises will depart from there and take you where ever you would like to go for your boat party.

Private yacht charters are available for any unique and special experience. Get the boat all to yourself, as you take to the waters of Newport aboard a majestic 80-foot sailboat or the 48-foot sloop. The Schooner Adirondack II is certified for up to 57 guests, and the Sloop Eleanor is certified for up to 24 guests although there is no minimum number of guests required for a charter. Unlike many historic schooners, the Adirondack II was built and designed with a spacious cockpit specifically for carrying passengers; so, even with a full boat, all have room to sit and move about the decks comfortably. Adirondack II is a U.S. Coast Guard certified vessel sailing with U.S. Coast Guard licensed captains and only the most experienced and hospitable crew. She is equipped with life jackets for all, two bathrooms, blankets for cool evenings, and beverages on all trips. Whether you’re planning a corporate outing or special event, we are happy to accommodate your specific needs. A variety of catering and bar packages are available upon request.

Meet the newest member of our fleet, Eleanor . Just launched in Albany in May 2016, she’s a custom designed Scarano 48’ sloop that can accommodate up to 24 guests in her roomy cockpit with wrap around seating. Her size and classic lines make Adirondack II the perfect boat for more intimate corporate and private sailing charters, leisurely day sails and sunset cruises on Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay. Sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery while our experienced captain and knowledgeable crew fill you with the lore of yesteryear while sailing on the bay. To inquire about Private Yacht Charters availability, you must provide us with a date and a specific time frame. A 1.5 hour minimum is required. Generally this is enough time to sail through Newport Harbor and up to the Castle Hill Light House. We will also sail north under the Newport Bridge upon request.

Harbor tour.

We stumbled upon this tour by accident. I’m so glad we did, this is probably one of the best guided tours I have been on in a while.

25 dollars each is definitely worth it. An entire hour full of historic sites and lots of laughter. We’ll definitely be going back again!

Excellent trip

We took the sunset tour in mid-June and it was brilliant. I would thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone visiting Newport.

With borrowed molds, the shop spaced some sections, and opted for the long cabin top and adjusted the stern layouts. With a displacement hull, speed was never the main goal for Temma but instead designed to be stable & spacious. With her smooth styling, Temma is a perfect cruiser. Over the years multiple families have been the caretakers of this iconic New England Yacht & each have maintained her perfectly, for the next owners to continue on the legacy. Newport Classic Yacht Co. welcomes you to our private yacht endeavor, Temma.

Pristine Coastlines & Marine-Protected Reserves

The best part of our job is to introduce you to the whales, dolphins, and sea lions in their environment, close and personal! We hope that in your time with us we can make you feel connected to the animals as they go about their life in nature. We also don’t wish to exploit them for a show or treat them as disposable producers of income. Our waters are their homes and/or feeding grounds, which we want them to continue to thrive in in the most natural state possible.

6 top-rated newport mansion tours + tips from a local.

Newport's famed mansions are a must-see in the City by the Sea.

Top-Rated Newport Mansion Tours

Front exterior of The Breakers, a Newport Mansion.

Gavin Ashworth | Courtesy of Newport Mansions

Experience peak luxury and elegance at these stunning properties.

More than a century ago, America's wealthiest families commissioned their "summer cottages" to be built in the coastal enclave of Newport, Rhode Island , along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The era's most renowned architects outdid one another in size and scale as well as opulence and grandeur. Today, Newport is synonymous with its exquisite Gilded Age mansions, and experiencing them in person is an absolute must.

The majority of the Gilded Age mansions in Newport – but not all – are owned and operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County, and many of the most popular are open to the public year-round. Get ready to explore the Bellevue Avenue Historic District as you tour Newport's best mansions.

The Breakers

Interior of a room in The Breakers that features a piano, chandeliers, intricate curtains and more.

Courtesy of Andrea McHugh

Price: From $29 for adults; $10 for youths 6 to 12

Standout perk: The Breakers offers an audio Family Tour that engages young visitors with stories about the lives of the children who summered there, the staff who ran the home and interesting things to see in the mansion, such as the playful dolphin sculpture beneath the grand staircase.

Considered the grande dame of all the Newport mansions, The Breakers was no doubt built to impress. The summertime escape of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his family was designed by the Gilded Age's preeminent architect, Richard Morris Hunt, and boasts a classic Italian palazzo design with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Visitors can explore the mansion at their own pace via the self-guided audio tour available in nearly a dozen languages on the Newport Mansions free app, which will come in especially handy if you plan to explore more than one mansion. Take some time to explore the beauty of the 13-acre grounds as well, and be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes .

Those with a curiosity of how a mansion of this magnitude worked – after all, The Breakers was considered a modern marvel when completed in 1895 – will enjoy the Beneath The Breakers Tour. This guide-led tour takes you through the boiler room, tunnel and basement. Guests will learn how the home was outfitted with electricity, still considered a novelty during the Gilded Age. This tour requires a separate ticket from The Breakers' audio tour and is best suited for visitors 13 years and older. Advance reservations are recommended.

Local tip: As The Breakers is the most visited mansion in Newport, a good time to visit is either when it opens or toward the end of the day, especially in the busiest summer months. The early evening light can be ideal for photos, but plan accordingly as the house and grounds close one hour after the last tour admission. Before you visit, save time by downloading the free Newport Mansions tour app.

Marble House

Interior of a bedroom in Marble House that features a large rug, detailed wallpaper and more.

Price: From $25 for adults; $10 for youths 6 to 12

Standout perk: While it's hard to rival the splendor of Marble House, the Chinese Tea House on the end of the mansion's lawn parallel to Cliff Walk is an unexpected visual delight. For $35 extra, tour ticket holders to Marble House can enjoy sandwiches and refreshments at the cafe at the Chinese Tea House or make a reservation for brunch and afternoon tea service, offered on weekends May through December. The service is operated by Stoneacre Restaurants, which owns two popular restaurants in downtown Newport.

From the moment visitors walk under the four towering Corinthian columns fronting this mansion, they know they are in for a treat. Like other Newport Mansions audio tours, Marble House has a self-guided tour available via the organization's free app, allowing visitors to peruse the property at their own pace.

Inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles , Marble House is an architectural masterpiece. Made from 500,000 cubic square feet of marble, the mansion was a 39th birthday present from businessman and philanthropist William K. Vanderbilt to his wife Alva. He spared no expense for their summer escape. Later in life, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont became a suffragist and hosted events at Marble House in support of women's right to vote. Viewers of the popular HBO series "The Gilded Age" may recognize rooms in the mansion as it was used for filming on location and also inspired sets.

Local tip: Don't miss the ballroom on the first floor – while it's not the largest in Newport, it's widely considered the most ornate, with gilt details from floor to ceiling.

View & Book Tickets: Marble House | Viator | GetYourGuide

Interior of a room in The Elms that features chairs and tables, high ceilings, statues and more.

Standout perk: While The Elms is spectacular, its formal gardens – 10 acres' worth – are extraordinary, complete with nearly 40 species of trees plus terraces, gazebos, fountains and colorful blooms, depending on the time of year.

Fashioned after an 18th-century French chateau, The Elms is a must-visit mansion, from the sun-soaked conservatory and the drawing room to the handsome library and the breakfast room bearing Chinese-style lacquered wall panels. A self-guided audio tour is available in nearly a dozen languages, but any fan of "Downton Abbey" or those curious about life behind the scenes of Newport's mansions will appreciate the Servant Life Tour at The Elms.

On this newly updated, guide-led tour, visitors start in the basement, where you'll see the operations of the house such as the kitchen and butler's pantry, all the way up to the domestic staff's living quarters on the third floor. Along the way, travelers will learn more about the personal lives of staff, and see rare photographs of servants at work and in their free time. You'll even get to learn about topics like immigration and labor disputes on this tour.

Local tip: The Servant Life Tour is not only fascinating, but you'll get the rare opportunity to go on The Elms' rooftop and be rewarded with an amazing and unexpected view of Newport Harbor.

Rough Point

Interior of a room in Rough Point that features large, arched windows with stunning views.

Price: From $20; free for children 12 and younger

Standout perk: Rough Point sits at the southern end of Bellevue Avenue, so getting here allows you to enjoy views of both private mansions and those open to the public along the way. The mansion's oceanfront perch offers an uninterrupted view of the beautiful Cliff Walk Bridge, a stone arch bridge across the rocky inlet where Doris Duke would swim regularly.

Though a Gilded Age mansion through and through, Rough Point is perhaps best loved not for its grandeur but for its most famous resident: Doris Duke. The late heiress, collector and philanthropist – dubbed the "richest little girl in the world" when she was born – spent considerable time at Rough Point until her death in 1993. A self-guided audio tour leads visitors here through the art-filled home room by room, highlighting eclectic sculpture, family portraits, centuries-old tapestries, renowned furnishings and many pieces Duke collected as an avid world traveler.

While the formal rooms such as the Yellow Room and jaw-dropping Music Room are a sight, the ocean-facing Solarium affords the best views. Whether before or after your tour, visit the house tour on the website for footage of Doris Duke at the home as well as behind-the-scenes videos. Note that Rough Point is typically open seasonally from spring through mid-November.

Local tip: On Rough Point's grounds, you'll find a pair of life-size topiary camels inspired by Doris' pet Bactrian camels, Princess and Baby. Both enjoyed the summer months with the tobacco heiress at Rough Point and have become the unofficial mascots of the mansion. The Newport Restoration Foundation encourages taking a #camelgram photo with the Princess and Baby topiary to share on social media.

View & Book Tickets: Rough Point | GetYourGuide

Illuminated exterior of Rosecliff in the evening.

Dave Hansen | Courtesy of Newport Mansions

Standout perk: Rosecliff's signature feature – despite being home to Newport's largest ballroom, which hosted lavish society events throughout the Gilded Age – is its celebrated heart-shaped grand staircase.

Following a multimillion-dollar renovation, Rosecliff resumed tours in September 2023, much to the delight of Newport's visitors. Architect Stanford White, who was the mastermind behind Newport's historic Casino Theatre and myriad other important buildings, modeled the mansion after the Grand Trianon at Versailles for silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs. Its European influence is felt throughout.

Explore the mansion at your own pace via the self-guided audio tour on the free Newport Mansions app. Don't forget to look up in the ballroom, where the trompe l'oeil ceiling creates an air of whimsy and romance, making it the ideal setting for the filming parts of "The Great Gatsby" with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, as well as the more recent "27 Dresses."

Local tip: Rosecliff hosts many amazing events, including the annual Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival, which features dinners, events and seminars with wines and other libations from around the world.

View & Book Tickets: Rosecliff | Viator

Chateau-sur-Mer

Interior of the dining room in Chateau-sur-Mer featuring a painting ceiling.

Standout perk: A new audio tour is your guide to this National Historic Landmark, considered Newport's first true mansion. Learn about the lives of the Wetmore family members who lived there for more than a century.

Until the arrival of the Vanderbilt houses in Newport in the 1890s, Chateau-sur-Mer was considered the seaside city's most palatial residence. Today, visitors can explore the home, an Italianate-style villa built for wealthy China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore, who did quite a bit of entertaining at this summer cottage.

Local tip: While Chateau-sur-Mer is essentially a Victorian Era time capsule, the mansion's grounds are home to amazing tree specimens, shrubs and more, including a striking weeping beech tree. If you explore deeper into the grounds, you'll find a cool circular maze made from mounds of grass; this earthwork by artist Richard Fleischner is known as the "Sod Maze" and makes for a relaxing place to meditate.

Champagne Sunset Cruise

Sunset Cruises in Newport, RI are stunning and a terrific way to start your evening!  Sunset Sails are available on all three of our sailboats- Aquidneck , Sightsailer , and Starlight .

Watching the sunset from the deck of one of our boats while sipping your favorite beverage and viewing spectacular sights is often the highlight of a visit to Newport!

Come aboard, sit back, and relax!  Newport’s sea breeze often starts to moderate towards sunset, so if you’re looking for a calmer and more leisurely cruise, a sunset cruise should fit the bill.

On sunset cruises, Newport’s sky often turns from a bright, sunny blue, to orange and violet, laced with red.

Then, sailing back into the harbor, the entire waterfront is often bathed in warm, golden light, and waterfront windows are ablaze with reflections of the sun.

Of course every sail is different, and although we can’t guarantee you a fiery, red ball and green flash as the sun sinks beneath the horizon, Newport sunset cruises can be spectacular!

Read more about sunset cruises on our BLOG.

Where will we sail on Sunset Cruises?

Sunset cruises in Newport, RI offer magnificent sightseeing!   Your crew will raise sails (you can help if you like!) and then you’ll sail past Goat Island and into Narragansett Bay.

As you sip champagne or quaff your beer, you’ll sail past Fort Adams, get great views of the Pell Bridge, view Hammersmith Farm and see Clingstone, an iconic house on a rock. Depending on the wind and tide, we may make it past the lawn at Castle Hill, its iconic lighthouse and into Rhode Island Sound.

You’ll  see mega-yachts around the harbor as well as vintage 12 Meter America’s Cup boats docked nearby.

Along the way, our friendly captain and crew will point out the sights and provide light, commentary.

  What’s Included on Sunset Sails?

Ticketed Sunset Cruises include champagne, beer, and water in the ticket price.  High Noon Seltzers are also available for purchase.

*Complimentary champagne and beer are included in your ticket price, however, Sunset Cruises are not unlimited “booze cruises”.

Although we’ll serve a couple of rounds, we aim to create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere for all to enjoy. On Private charters, no drinks are provided, however you may bring your own.

What to bring on Sunset Cruises?

Sunset cruises, even in the Summer, can be cooler on the water.  We recommend bringing a sweatshirt or light jacket and long pants in the Spring and Fall.  Blankets on board for guests to use during cool evenings.

We offer Sunset Cruises every day throughout our season. We recommend buying tickets in advance as sunset cruises are one of our most popular cruises and frequently sell out.

See the  Schedules & Rates section for a list of departure times.

Have more questions about our booking policies, the weather, or where to park?  Check our FAQ.

  • 8 Coolest Towns in Rhode Island for a Summer Vacation in 2024

Rhode Island is called the Ocean State for a reason. There is barely any part of this town without a beach or lake in it, making it the perfect state to escape the summer heat and partake in various water activities! With its Narragansett Bay shoreline connecting to the Atlantic Ocean , vacationers are in for a great time swimming in the ocean and taking a walk on the beach shores. Not to mention, these towns offer quaint shopping areas, maritime history, as well as other family-friendly museums and attractions. Make this summer memorable by vacationing in any of these eight coolest towns in Rhode Island!

Image of the Martin House in Westerly, Rhode Island, USA. Editorial credit: Rachel Rose Boucher / Shutterstock.com

Westerly is the coolest place to be in summer. Get ready to eat as much seafood as possible and sunbathe on some of the most beautiful beaches in Rhode Island, such as Atlantic Beach Park and Misquamicut State Beach. Spend your vacation chilling on Napatree Point Conservation Area, a Sandy Spit with an island feel. The Weekapaug Inn beach resort is a must-stay. Take some history information back home by visiting Babcock-Smith House Museum and Living Sharks Museum. Go beer-tasting at Grey Sail Brewing and attend their Summer Block Party event on Canal Street from April to September. FInish off your vacation by attending an art exhibit at the Artist Cooperative Gallery to support a local artist.

Narragansett

Many commercial fishing boats docked in Point Judith in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Narragansett is a seaside resort which used to be a rural fishing site. The town has evolved into a place where tourists can have the time of their lives while on holiday. Adventure awaits you at the Point Judith Ferry Terminal, where there are seafood restaurants aplenty. Point Judith is a small village on the shores of Narragansett with a history of its own. During World War II , an Allied ship sank within sight of the Point Judith Lighthouse Coast Guard as the ship was hit by a German torpedo, causing the loss of lives. To date, that eventful time is called the Battle of Point Judith. You will be able to see the Lighthouse when you visit. Point Judith Fisherman's Memorial is a state park and a tribute to hardworking fishermen who lost their lives at sea. If you enjoy fishing, you should see the Twenty/Aught Sportfishing. Visit the Coast Guard House Restaurant for the scenic ocean view, clams, and oysters. What is a summer vacation without the beach? Swim at Salty Brine State Beach. Go picnicking at Narragansett Beach. Chat with other tourists or locals while sunbathing at Roger Wheeler State Beach. Relax and boardwalk at the family-friendly Scarborough State Beach. On the way to the beach or when you are coming back, check out The Towers, a historical monument in town. Spend the night at The Shore House or The Break Hotel.

Historical downtown street in Newport, Rhode Island.

Newport was founded in 1639. The town is known for preserving its historic structures, which can be seen in the beautiful buildings across the town, with many on the National Register of Historic Places. Touro Synagogue National Historic Site is one of the United States' oldest synagogues. Visit the Rosecliff mansion, an old house that is now open to visitors. Marble House and The Breakers, another Gilded Age Mansion like Rosecliff, is a must-see. Have fun at Brenton Point State Park and Fort Adams State Park.
