After volunteering my friend and I took the Taj Mahal and Ranthambore Park tour. An air conditioned van picked us up at our homestay. The guide Raj was with us the entire time. Along the way we stopped at historical temples. The hotels were very nice. All had air conditioning and comfy beds (equivalent of a Hampton inn or Holiday inn in the USA.) The Taj Mahal is breathtaking and we had a great guide who not only told us the history and pointed out architectural details, but also knew where and how to get the best photos. Ranthambore Park is amazing. The Jeep safari was so much fun! We didn’t see a tiger on our tour, but the Jeep right in front of us did! We did see so many animals! Wild pigs, antelopes, monkeys, and many beautiful birds. Along the whole tour our guide took us to many interesting places to stop and eat (we didn’t want to stop at the western style restaurants, but preferred local food.) and we also got to visit shops and things. It really was an amazing time. We didn’t have to worry about a single thing and got dropped at the airport for our flight home. I would really recommend volunteering through VWI as well as taking one of their amazing tours! I can’t wait to go back and do the Varanasi tour next!

Words cannot describe the beauty of this magnificent monument. Our guide shared interesting facts and stories about the Taj Mahal and it was truly a mesmerizing experience. From Agra, we made our way to Jaipur, also known as the Pink City. We got to explore the majestic Amer Fort, which offered breathtaking views of the city. We also visited the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, and the Hawa Mahal, each with its own unique history and architecture. Next on our itinerary was Jodhpur, the Blue City. We visited the Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India, and learned about the Rajput kings who once ruled the city. Our guide took us to the bustling local market where we got to taste some delicious Rajasthani cuisine. Udaipur, also known as the City of Lakes, was our next stop. We took a boat ride on the serene Lake Pichola and visited the stunning City Palace. The sunset view from the palace was simply breathtaking. We then made our way to Pushkar, a holy city known for its Brahma Temple and the annual camel fair. We got to witness the vibrant and colorful culture of this city and it was truly a unique experience. Our last stop was Jaisalmer, the Golden City. We got to go on a camel safari in the Thar desert and spend a night in a traditional desert camp. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, watching the sunset over the sand dunes and enjoying a delicious Rajasthani dinner under the starry sky. Overall, this 10-day tour of Royal Rajasthan was an incredible journey filled with unforgettable experiences. The accommodations were comfortable and the transportation was well-organized. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to answer our questions. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience the rich culture and history of Rajasthan. It was truly a trip of a lifetime and I cannot wait to go back and explore more of this beautiful state.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Rajasthan?

Rajasthan's main cities and regions are well-connected with Delhi, Mumbai and other major entry ports in India.

Rajasthan is a huge state, and while the quickest way to travel around is via flight, the train is recommended.

Not only is it affordable and convenient, but it's one of the most popular ways to get from A to B for locals and is a memorable experience for many travelers in India.

When is the best time to visit Rajasthan?

The weather is at its best during the winter between November and February when the temperatures aren't too high. That said, the nights are chilly (often dipping to 32°F or lower) so you'll definitely need warm layers to rug up.

Many of the state's most exciting festivals are also held in winter, including the Pushkar Camel Fair, Jaisalmer's Desert Festival and the Udaipur World Music Festival.

Visiting in the summer months between March and September isn't off the cards, but the weather is dry and hot with intense temperatures that often climb to 104°F and higher, especially in places like Jaisalmer and Bikaner.

The monsoon runs from July to September, but the rain is generally less severe compared to other states, so visiting during these months is an option if you don't mind the humidity.

What are some famous foods to try in Rajasthan?

Oh, boy are your tastebuds in for a treat! Many of India’s most beloved dishes hail from Rajasthan. Here are a few favorites you absolutely must try:

• Laal maans:  This meaty curry turns up the heat. It's made by simmering mutton in a fiery gravy spiced with red Kashmiri chilies, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin seeds and cloves. Mop up the leftover sauce with fluffy rice or warm naan.
• Kachori:  Kachori is one of the most popular snack foods in Rajasthan and you'll often smell it cooking on street corners. It's essentially a fried flatbread filled with a delicious mix of spices, potatoes, daal or whatever else you fancy. It's usually served with chutneys and cool yogurt.
• Gatte ki subzi:  This delicious curry consists of chickpea flour dumplings cooked in a creamy yogurt-based gravy. It's flavored with red and green chilies, coriander powder, fenugreek leaves, garam masala, turmeric and various other spices.
• Dal bati churma:  This traditional Rajasthani dish is made with batis (spicy baked wheat balls) served with daal, either on the side or poured generously on top. It's a great lunch dish or snack.
• Kadhi:   Kadhi is a curd-based curry often eaten with rice or roti. It's thickened with gram flour and flavored with a range of spices such as turmeric, chili paste, mustard seeds, cumin and asafoetida.
• Ker sangri:  This Rajasthani delicacy is the signature taste of the Thar Desert. It's made with dried ker berries and sangri beans that are boiled in a pressure cooker and then fried in oil, spices and yogurt.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travelers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travelers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now ­– let your inner child rejoice!

Do I need a visa to travel to India?

Yes, all foreigners entering India will need a visa. Whether you can apply for an e-visa is dependent on your nationality, the duration of your India tour and how you plan on entering the country.

Amer Fort is one of the primary forts in the city of Jaipur. The fort is located high up on a hill belonging to the Aravalli range. It is one of the main tourist attractions in the city. The fort is said to be built by the Meena community and later it was taken over by Raja Man Singh I. Known for its sheer grandeur, architectural elements and designs, the place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With an intermix of geometrical gardens overlooking Maota Lake, the fort stands in all its glory showing off its red sandstone and marble construction. There are many sections here, like Diwan-e-Aam (space for public gatherings), Diwan-e-Khas (a space for private gatherings), Sheesh Mahal (a palace of mirrors), and Sukh Niwas (a cool room where the cooling effect is artificially created). The palace was the home to Rajputana rulers and families.

2. Jaigarh Fort

Known to be a part of the structural complex of Amer Fort, Jaigarh Fort was built by the kind of Amer Jai Singh II in the year 1726. The purpose of the fort was to protect Amer Fort and the many palaces inside it. It is said that there is a secret passageway leading from Amer Fort to Jaigarh Fort. Such a design was constructed to protect the Rajput family in the event of war. Jaigarh Fort houses Jaivana cannon, the world’s largest cannon on wheels. The initial construction happened in the year 1734 and the fort expanded from time to time. This fort is said to be connected to Jaigarh Fort with a secret tunnel. Combining Amer Fort, Jaigarh Fort, and Nahargarh Fort - these three stood as a group of forts that flourished during the Rajputana reign.

4. Hawa Mahal

Literally translating as the Palace of Winds, Hawa Mahal is one of the iconic structures in Jaipur. The structure and architecture of the palace takes after Khetri Mahal, another palace of winds located in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. Built in the year 1799, the palace was constructed for the royalty women to observe the daily ongoings on the street without being seen because of the Purdah system. Firstly, it was my first time travelling in a group and it felt like I was travelling with my family. The tour managers Mr. Pramod Gharat and Mr. Krish Vernekar both took great care of us. Made sure that we were never left behind, had ample time to enjoy the different sights we were taken to and had lots of time to take and get amazing photos taken. The guides organized for us were great in imparting the knowledge behind the monuments and places we visited. The food was simply delicious and special thanks to our tour managers for organising authentic Rajasthani food for us on our request. The bus driver uncle took us to these places safely and never once did we have any problem in the entire journey from start to end. It was one of the truly most memorable trip of my life.

Day 1: Jaipur

Arrive into the capital city of Jaipur to embark on your Rajasthan tour. Jaipur is well connected by roadways, airways, and railways to all major cities in India. Therefore, Jaipur should be the easiest entry point. Moreover, warm up to the Rajasthani culture in this friendly city! Hire a private taxi to check in to your hotel.

Day 2: Bikaner

A good start is half the task well done. That is to say, starting your Rajasthan tour in Bikaner is an amazing start. Jaipur to Udaipur is roughly 350 kilometres and hence should take you around 5 – 6 hours.

Check in to your designated hotel at Bikaner. Proceed to visit the famous Ranakpur Jain Temples. Once you get the spiritual start you need, head to the quaint National Camel Breeding Farm. Day 3: Bikaner

Enjoy a scrumptious breakfast as you have a long day ahead. Start early to visit the world-famous Junargarh Fort. This is also widely called the “Old Fort” because this was once the house of the ruling family.

Secondly, visit the Karni Mata Temple, which is one of the most recommended places to visit in Rajasthan. This temple is also widely known as the “Temple of Rats”. This is because of the 25,000+ black rats that live in the temple, and subsequently, the temple is named that way.

Spend the rest of the day in leisure embracing the culture of the city.

Day 4: Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is located about 330 kilometres away from Bikaner, and hence you would need to hire a private taxi. The drive should take you roughly 5 hours.

Check in to your designated hotel at Jaisalmer. Since the drive is quite a long one, therefore spend the day predominantly at leisure. You can also choose to make this day a little more engaged by visiting Kolayat. Kolayat is a quaint old town which is situated between Bikaner and Jaisalmer. Above all, you also get to experience village-style of Rajasthan in Kolayat.

Day 5: Jaisalmer

After a delicious breakfast, head to visit one of the most visited places in Rajasthan, Jaisalmer Fort. This fort is located on the far end of the golden city and was once the living place of the King of Jaisalmer. The sprawling fort dominates the landscape of the city, hence making it a must-visit place in any Rajasthan tour.

In addition to all this, Jaisalmer is the last “living fort” in India, which still houses over 2000 people!

Day 6: Jodhpur

Located at about 300 kilometres away from Jaisalmer, Jodhpur will be the next city you’d be covering in your Rajasthan tour. The journey should roughly take you somewhere between 4 -5 hours, therefore hiring a private taxi is necessary.

After checking in to your designated hotel in Jodhpur, or even during your journey from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, visit Osian. Osian is an ancient village on the outskirts of Jodhpur. Most importantly, visiting these villages add a different dimension to your grand tour.

Day 7: Jodhpur

Hire a private taxi and start your day early to visit the Mehrangarh Fort. Mehrangarh Fort is a massive prehistoric site that houses exhibits of different countries across the world. Spend the rest of the day to explore the streets of the blue city!

Day 8: Udaipur

No Rajasthan tour is complete without a visit to Udaipur. Therefore, the next city in your itinerary is Udaipur. Udaipur is roughly 250 kilometres away from Jodhpur, and hence should be a 4 -5-hour drive.

Start your sightseeing experience by visiting Nathdwara, a local town located in the Aravalli Ranges. Subsequently, visit the Ekling Ji Temple, which is believed to be the temple of the deity of the ruling god of the princely state of Mewar.

Day 9: Udaipur

Lonely Planet editor Akanksha Singh traveled to Jaipur to experience its history and culture. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

Road trips to Jaipur were a key part of my childhood in India . Before we left India, my parents would drive my sister and I over from Delhi on long weekends. We’d spent our time visiting local sights, stopping at streetside kathputli (puppet) shows, eating local food, and listening to ek tara , single-stringed instruments, played with a bow. 

Some 20 years later, the familiar sight of the red-, pink- and honey-hued forts never fails to amaze me. People say India’s Golden Triangle – Jaipur-Delhi-Agra – is a sensory overload. And it definitely is for people who haven’t traveled through pockets of Asia. Dubbed the “Pink City” after its pink paint-slicked walls that are lined with shops, this trip to Jaipur took me deeper into the historic town's chaotic bylanes and beyond the city’s outskirts.

Agra vs Jaipur: which Indian city is best?

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

I stayed at Teela the Glamping Resort in Achrol, a village an hour outside Jaipur. I’ve never “glamped” before (I studied geology at university; camping’s more my thing) but I enjoyed the novelty of the experience. It’s really no different from staying in a swish five-star hotel but in a “Moon Dome” – a geodesic tent – with stellar views of the desert, complete with raw dunes, tiny bulbuls and larks twittering away outside your door. 

There’s a single restaurant, Rait, on the premises (food was good; I’d recommend the Indian menu over the continental spread) and Teela does offer hotplates and a mini kitchenette setup for long-term guests. However, I did make the mistake of thinking breakfast would be most enjoyable al fresco (it was – for all of two minutes) until I realized that gritty stuff caught in my teeth was indeed sand in my aloo paratha (potato-filled flatbread).     

What was the most touristy thing you did? 

I did so much touristy sightseeing on this trip and, since it’d been a while since I’d seen the highlights, I regret none of it! I toured Amber Fort , with its extravagant chambers and geometrically charged gardens, took photos of the iconic red-and-pink-latticed Hawa Mahal and visited the City Palace , which is still home to Jaipur’s royal family.

Built in the 18th century, the City Palace’s four gates – in an inner courtyard named Pritam Niwas Chowk (“beloved’s courtyard”) – are an artistic obsession of mine. Each “gate” is an extravagantly designed door, themed against a season and dedicated to a Hindu deity. If I’m being honest here, the most touristy thing I did was take an Instagram-esque video of a journal with the Lehariya Gate or Green Gate (which represents spring) on its cover with the gate in the background. The gate is spectacular: glossy forest green tiles frame an ornate, heavy golden door in a cinquefoil arch. 

For those less obsessed with gloriously designed doors, the City Palace has much more to offer, including a museum and a splendid blue room (Chhavi Niwas), and parts of the royal wing are open to the public too. Plus, it’s right by Jantar Mantar  – an 18th century observatory that’s a UNESCO site built by Jai Singh II, a king fascinated by astronomy. What was the best thing you ate?

Jaipur has an impossibly good selection of food, and I’m one of those people who plans their days around meals, especially when I’m traveling. If I had to choose, my favorite meal would be the Rajasthani thali (plate meal) at Kuchali Mud House , a quaint, family-run establishment in Chak Charanwas, a village roughly an hour outside Jaipur city.

Most Rajasthani thali meals boast a combination of dhal, baati , churma – baati is a crusted unleavened bread that’s softened with melted ghee (ideal for the once nomadic desert folk) and churma is crushed, sweetened baati , dressed with nuts and dry fruit. However, the fragrant gulab (rose) churma  – cerise and topped with slivered almonds – was new to me and delicious. 

There’s a common belief in these parts that food cooked on a chulha (wood-burning stove), with freshly milled flours and freshly milked dairy is superior to their contemporary counterparts, and I have to agree. I have a reasonable spice tolerance, but those who aren’t as keen on heat are requested to call ahead to communicate this along with any other dietary restrictions. For a good Rajasthani laal maas (literally “red meat”), a decadent goat meat curry (with adjustable spice levels), try rait . 

What was the most under-the-radar activity you enjoyed?

I rode ATVs and went paintballing at Motosport Park (both are a combined ₹1700), but visiting a pottery community in Chak Charanwas (organized by the Kuchali Mud House) was the highlight of my trip. Jaipur is famous for its pottery with a cobalt blue glaze, which is Turko-Persian in origin. However, I got to throw tiny forms on a potter’s wheel with locally-sourced clay. I’m a hobby ceramist, so learning from experienced potters was an absolute boon. 

Pottery is still largely a caste-based profession in India (which means it’s not usually a profession people get to choose, but are born and forced into). So, it was refreshing to see a thriving enterprise run by people who now also supply their terracotta pottery to big hotel groups in addition to selling it to visitors. They make everything from vases and diyas (lamps) to screw-top water bottles and sculptures. 

What was the handiest thing you packed?

Layers and linens. I traveled in early March, when days are sweltering but evenings – particularly if you’re set up outside the city in the desert like I was – can get a little nippy. One thing I noticed about the rooms at Teela were that they had both ACs and radiators to bridge the change in seasons. Overall, light layers to wear over linen clothes and sun protection are essential. 

It’s also hugely important to stay hydrated in the sun; I packed a reusable water bottle to cut down on my plastic waste. Most resorts and restaurants will refill your water bottle with filtered water on request (add chlorine pills if you need to be extra careful). 

Also, the midday sun often results in phones overheating, so it’s probably worthwhile investing in a phone cooler, particularly if you plan on taking a ton of photos and videos. 

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

Many tourist spots in Jaipur frequently close for filming and there’s no way of finding out whether a certain attraction is closed for a shoot until you’re on the premises (calling ahead doesn’t always work). Leave plenty of time for sightseeing with the aim of revisiting popular sights if they’re closed.

Also, while there are a few cafes dotted around the city, chai is the caffeinated beverage of choice in these parts. So, if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to pack a cafetiere.
