The Vandals are a punk rock band from California, US who rose from the depths of the emerging local punk scene in 1980 and their combination of anti-political, wry humour and jovial nature shaped them into the archetypal So-Cal punk band inspiring the likes of The Offspring and blink-182.

Forming in 1980 with the original line-up consisted of: Jan Nils Ackerman (guitar), Steven Jenson (vocals), Steve Pfauter (bass) and Joe Escalante (drums), The Vandals surrounded by seminal punk bands like Social Distortion, Bad Religion and Descendants absorbed the emerging punk trend prevalent in the Southern Californian scene. What saw The Vandals distinguish themselves from the rest was their distinctive humour which they have maintained throughout their career.

In 1982 the band signed with Epitaph Records to release their debut EP “Peace Thru Vandalism” which took inspiration from some very real personal experiences apparent in tracks such as “Legend of Pat Brown” and “Pirate’s Life”. Integrating well into their live sets, the EP also featured future fan favourites as the release saw the band mark their territory. As The Vandals toured relentlessly in their local area, they soon built up a loyal following.

The Vandals appeared in director Penelope Spheeris’ 1984 film “Surburbia”, exploring the punk movement within suburban areas of California and the prominent youth culture of the 60’s and 70’s. Within the same year the band released their first full length “When in Rome Do as The Vandals” through National Trust Records as Pfauter announced his departure and was quickly replaced by Chalmer Lumery. A departure from their previous release, the band experimented with fusing several genre combinations such as “Mohawk Town” which blended punk rock with country twisted with their signature humour. With rising tension in the band down to personality clashes, Jenson left the band in the late 80’s and Dave Quakenbush from Falling Idols stepped in.

By the time The Vandals released their second album “Slippery When Ill” in 1989, the band had undergone more line-up changes. With Escalante moving from drums to bass and the welcome additions of Warren Fitzgerald on guitar and Josh Freese on drums, The Vandals had once again solidified their line up in the early 90’s.

The 90’s saw a revival of the Californian punk scene as it began infiltrating the mainstream headed by bands such as NOFX, Green Day and The Offspring. As The Vandals made their third release “Fear of a Punk Planet”, they soon found themselves deep within the scene as they appeared on radio stations and rock television shows with their first video “Pizza Train”.

In 1994, the band signed with The Offspring’s Dexter Holland’s imprint label Nitro Records to release the albums “Live Fast Diarrhea” (1995) and “The Quickening” (1996). As they continued touring relentless, The Vandals were eventually embraced by the Warped Tour culture. After the release of “The Quickening” Escalante and Fitzgerald set up Kung Fu Records initially to release the Assorted Jelly Beans’ “Riverside” album and soon the label became involved with the movie soundtrack for “Glory Daze”. The Vandals would also release the Christmas album “Oi to the World!” off Kung Fu at the end of 1996.

In 2000 the band released their last album with Nitro “Look What I Almost Stepped In” and now with Kung Fu Records having become more established, The Vandals signed with their own label where to this day they remain. Despite a string of lawsuits and several line-up changes, The Vandals have remained true to themselves, persevering and championing the DIY bands and cementing their precedence as one of the most seminal punk bands to emerge from that era.

Live reviews

The Vandals kick ass. Great band. Very funny too. So happy to see them on tour. The only problem was the venue. Pier 6 Pavilion has bolted seats all the way to the stage. Punk concerts need a mosh pit. This was like allowing someone to put their feet in the water, but not allowing any swimming. I hope to see them again when we can have a throw down and not be forced to bounce in one spot or stand with our thumb up our ass. The Vandals deserve a better venue. They are GREAT!

Things To Do

Music + concerts, music + concerts | he drums for sting, devo and the vandals. now josh freese made an album of 60-second songs., the long beach resident's "just a minute, vol. 1" will be released on friday, oct. 29 through pearl jam guitarist stone gossard's loosegroove records..

the vandals tour 2022

Professionally, that is. Freese joined the musicians union before he’d even hit his teens, playing several shows a day at Disneyland’s Tomorrowland Terrace in the ’80s.

“It was great, playing five sets a day during the school year and we’d play weekends in the summertime,” he said of his years playing the theme park. “Those are some of my fondest memories – and I like to joke that it’s all been downhill ever since.

“I look back at it now and I laugh,” he said, but “I wouldn’t change any of that.”

By the time he was 15, he was in the studio making records with Dweezil Zappa before joining Huntington Beach-based punk band The Vandals a year later. From there, Freese has gone on to tour with acts like Devo , Sting , Nine Inch Nails and fellow Orange County punks, The Offspring . As a studio drummer, he’s played on over 400 albums, working with everyone from Michael Bublé and Glen Campbell to Danny Elfman and Rob Zombie .

And now, Freese is now releasing his own eclectic-sounding album of one-minute songs that he recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown dubbed “Just A Minute, Vol. 1,” which is dropping on vinyl and digitally on Friday, Oct. 29.

“I like the fact that if you don’t like the song you’re listening to, it’s over before you can go push skip,” he said of the format. “It’s great for those with a short attention span, like myself and everyone in my family.”

Freese said that when all of his projects came to a stop last year he found himself pacing around his Long Beach home. For the first time in several decades, the now 48-year-old husband and father of four was actually home “for more than 20 minutes,” he said with a laugh during a recent visit to his house.

The album, which is a fast and furious collection of 20 one-minute songs with song titles like “Headlock Headlock Nicolas Cage,” “Ain’t Nuthin Funny Bout 2020,” and “Disneyland is Closed,” was a passion project created out of boredom and a desire to escape “the not-so-fun real world.”

“I wasn’t taking it too seriously and I wasn’t planning on putting out a record or anything like that,” Freese said, who had just arrived back in Long Beach from Greece where he played some shows with Sting. He was also already preparing to head to Sacramento for a gig with The Offspring later that week.

“I was doing it to merely entertain myself and have some fun,” he said of the album. “Writing a whole song sounded so daunting, so I came up with something quick and easy that I could throw up on the Internet and then write these ridiculous hashtags. I didn’t care if I ever made a dime off of these, I just enjoyed the process and there was zero pressure and I wasn’t answering to anybody.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Josh Freese (@joshfreese)

While he loves being with his family and their four standard poodles, Freese said that just a week into the shutdown he was in desperate need of a creative outlet. To busy himself, he hunkered down in his home studio — or his kitchen or his bathroom, wherever it was quiet enough to record at the moment — and began to compose these short songs and create little videos on his iPhone to share them with his Instagram followers.

“I remember before the Internet when bands would do mailing lists,” he said, while recalling the laborious process of addressing, stuffing and licking hundreds of envelopes and then mailing them all out each time a band had a gig or new album coming out. “Now, we just hit a button and it goes out to tens of thousands of people all at once. It’s pretty great.

“I kind of straddle a funny area, too, where I’m a famous drummer and I work with all of these famous artists, but myself as a solo artist, I’m not successful. So having that sort of communication helps me let people know that I have a little record coming out. Some of these songs, I made videos for with iMovie and it’s fun. There’s a little charm to that super D.I.Y. thing.”

On top of almost always being on tour and being a highly in-demand studio drummer, Freese has also co-written songs with bands like Guns N’ Roses and Queens of the Stone Age. Now that he’s just about back to his regularly hectic schedule, Freese said it was his longtime friend Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard that convinced him now was the time to compile all of his pandemic creations and release them through Gossard’s and drummer Regan Hagar’s Loosegroove Records. “Just A Minute, Vol. 2” will follow soon, Freese said, noting that it will have an additional 21 one-minute songs.

Freese grew up in Placentia and comes from a musical family. His mother, Trisha, is a classical pianist and his dad, Stan Freese , plays the tuba and was the musical director of bands at both Walt Disney World Resort and the Disneyland Resort for over four decades. His younger brother, Jason Freese, is also an in-demand studio musician and a touring member of rock band Green Day.

Through all of the years and wide breadth of projects, Freese said it was focus, persistence and maybe a little bit of talent that got him to where he is today, flying around on private planes and helicopters with Sting & Co. in London and Greece.

“There are a lot of great musicians that are fantastic, but they never made a living at it,” he said. “I feel so fortunate and grateful that I’m in the position that I’m in. I’ve worked my ass off. When I was younger, people used to say ‘Josh is going to retire by the time he’s 35’ because I was working professionally at such a young age. Why would I do that? I love doing what I do. I don’t think I’ll ever wake up one day and go, ‘I’m retired, I’m done playing drums.’ If anything, I’d slow down in certain areas, maybe play shows and make records closer to home, but this isn’t something I can just stop doing.”

Though the Vandals did a ticketed livestream concert from Santa’s Village at Skypark last year , Freese said he’s glad that the band’s 26th Annual Christmas Formal this year will be an in-person event at House of Blues Anaheim on Dec. 18. He’s also be performing with Devo at the Cruel World Festival at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena May 14-15, 2022.

Aviva Abramovsky Named Dean of U of I College of Law

May 03, 2024.

MOSCOW, Idaho — Aviva Abramovsky has been named the new dean of the University of Idaho College of Law. She will take over the role full time on June 10.

“I am excited to join University of Idaho as dean of the College of Law and become a part of this inspiring and welcoming academic community — one well known for its commitment to the highest quality of legal education,” Abramovsky said. “For both the law school and university, this is an unprecedented time of opportunity. I look forward to building on this community’s commitment to excellence by consistently engaging with the broader law school community to help our faculty, staff, students and alumni achieve their professional and educational goals. I am truly honored by this opportunity and commit myself to achieving the aspirations of this unique institution to the very best of my abilities.”

Abramovsky is a noted expert in the fields of insurance law, commercial law, regulation of financial entities and legal ethics. She is a member of the American Law Institute and was the winner of the New York State Bar Association Professor David D. Siegel Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the study of New York law. She is the author of “Uniform Commercial Code, West’s McKinney’s Forms for New York,” as well as numerous other book chapters and articles in the fields of insurance and commercial law.

She joins Idaho Law from the University of Buffalo School of Law, where she was the William J. Magavern Faculty Scholar. Before that role, she served as dean of the school from 2017-23. She also spent 13 years teaching at the Syracuse University College of Law.

During her time at Buffalo, Abramovsky oversaw the expansion of the school’s experiential and clinical legal education program and the expansion of student support systems. It was under her leadership that Buffalo launched the second undergraduate law program in the country, as well as a Doctor of Juridical Science degree.

A graduate of Cornell University, she received her bachelor’s degree in industrial and labor relations before earning her juris doctor from University of Pennsylvania.

Abramovsky will take over for Johanna Kalb, who has served as dean since 2021. Kalb helped lead Idaho Law during its continued expansion in Boise and helped the college grow to record enrollment.

U of I Increases Water Research and Technology Center’s Presence

May 08, 2024.

BOISE, Idaho — The University of Idaho-administered Idaho Water Resources Research Institute (IWRRI)  is increasing its presence in the Southwest Idaho region through the hiring of a Boise-based director.

IWRRI is one of 54 water research and technology centers across the nation, and Kendra Kaiser will join U of I in July to lead a statewide team including members at U of I Coeur d’Alene.

“Our Boise center is home to an incredible team of researchers leading the way in water research,” U of I Boise Center Executive Officer Chandra Zenner Ford said. “We’re excited about IWRRI’s return to the Southwest Idaho region, as well as the benefits that will come from Kendra’s leadership and her impressive background addressing water issues for Idaho stakeholders.”

Established in 1964 by the U of I Board of Regents, IWRRI conducts and directs research to support the water resource needs of the state of Idaho, the northwest region and the nation. IWRRI’s mission is to serve all of Idaho, with staff and affiliated faculty at various locations statewide.

Kaiser, most recently an assistant research faculty member at Boise State University, graduated with her doctorate in watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry from Duke University in 2017. Her research focuses on applied hydrology and the co-production of research, which involves working collaboratively with water managers, water users, and various agencies to generate knowledge.

“I think the biggest priority for IWRRI in the first year is going to be engaging stakeholders and the research community,” Kaiser said. “This will ensure we have a comprehensive set of water research needs as well as an understanding of the research capacity that we have across the state.”

Kaiser’s location in Boise will further position IWRRI to play a critical role in building relationships and networks across the state and nation.

“Being in Boise is really important because most of our state and federal agencies are located here,” Kaiser said. “These are the folks who have an understanding of both statewide issues and national efforts and concerns.”

Kaiser will hold a faculty appointment as a University of Idaho Extension specialist in the Department of Soil and Water Systems.

Captain James Cook Monument, Hawaii, ca. 1904-1905

  • Jonathan Dembo
  • East Carolina Manuscript Collection
  • Uncategorized

When he took this picture of the Captain Cook Monument, sometime during 1904-1905, Lt. Commander Albert Parker Niblack was captain of the USS Iroquois (AT-46), a steam tug based at the U. S. Naval Station in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Iroquois, originally built as “Fearless” by Union Iron Works in San Francisco in 1892, had been purchased by the Navy and was used as a tug, mail boat, and surveying and supply ship, sailing back and forth between the various Hawaiian islands and Midway Island far to the West. [1]   It was during one of these voyages that Niblack photographed the Cook Monument, which stands just inland from Kealakekua Bay, on the South Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.  It appears from the angle of the scene that the Iroquois was at anchor in the bay when he took the shot.

The monument, built by the British Government in 1874, honors the memory of Captain James Cook, who was the first European to visit the islands in 1878, and who was killed by the Hawaiians during a skirmish on 14 February 1779. Today, the scene looks very much the same as it did when Captain Cook first landed there. Much of the coast is a national marine sanctuary or a state historical park. [2]

The monument is a 27-foot-tall obelisk. It marks the spot where Captain Cook died. For more than a century it remained a somewhat obscure local tourist destination more famous for its snorkeling than its history. In recent years, however, vandals have defaced the monument several times to protest colonialism. [3]

In recent years, however, vandals have defaced the monument several times to protest colonialism. [3]
