Ultimate guide to the 2024 men's T20 World Cup

30t20-guide-main

Get all the key venue and broadcast details ahead of a historic men's T20 World Cup in the United States and Caribbean

When does it start?

The 2024 men's T20 World Cup begins on Saturday, June 1 (10.30am Sunday, June 2 AEST) with the oldest rivalry in international cricket – the United States and Canada. Before the Ashes were even thought of, these two nations played in the first ever international cricket match in 1844 with Canada emerging victorious by 23 runs in the three-day contest at a field in Staten Island, New York.

This year's match will take place in Dallas at Grand Prairie Stadium, a former baseball park that was converted to a purpose-built cricket venue for the inaugural Major League Cricket season in 2023. Australia – fresh off their remarkable triumph in last year's 50-over version – begin their quest for a second men's T20 World Cup crown against Oman in Barbados on June 5 (10.30am, June 6 AEST) before facing archrivals and defending champions England at the same venue on June 8 (3am, June 9 AEST).

Co-hosts West Indies face Papua New Guinea in the second match of the tournament, India kick off their campaign against Ireland on June 5 (midnight, June 6 AEST) at New York's new pop-up cricket stadium, Pakistan open their tournament the following day against the US in Dallas, while trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand are one of the last teams to get underway on June 7 (9.30am, June 8 AEST) against Afghanistan in Guyana.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will be contested by a record 20 nations, an expansion from 16 teams at the 2022 edition that was hosted by Australia. Canada and Uganda have qualified for the men's tournament for the first time, while the USA will also contest their maiden T20 World Cup by virtue of being co-host.

Check out the full fixture here .

How can I watch?

All 55 matches will be shown live on Amazon Prime Video in Australia after the internet giant acquired the Aussie broadcast rights for all ICC events for 2024-27. There will be no free-to-air Australian broadcast of any men's or women's ICC events under the deal. You can read more about that here .

The time difference is a bit of a dog's breakfast for Australian viewers with matches stretching across a 13-hour window from a 12.30am start times to 10.30am start times on the east coast. Australia's tournament-opener against Oman begins at 10.30am AEST, while the first ball of the blockbuster second match against Ashes rivals England is at 3am AEST, which is a slightly tougher 1am on the west coast. Australia's remaining two Group B matches against Namibia and Scotland get underway at 10.30am AEST (8.30am AWST).

What's the tournament format?

The largest T20 World Cup in the tournament's history will again feature three stages – an initial group stage followed by the Super Eights and finals. The 20 teams have been split into four groups of five for the round-robin first stage of the tournament, with the top two teams to progress after each nation plays their other four group members. Teams receive two points for a win and one point for a no result. In the event of a tie, a Super Over will decide the winner. Group A will play all their matches in the United States, along with the first six matches of Group D, with the remaining four split between St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Upon completion of the first group stage, the top two teams from each of the four groups will move into the Super Eight stage of the competition. Teams seeded first and second in their groups in the first round will retain that seeding in the next stage regardless of their final position on group table, provided they qualify for the Super Eight stage. England are seeded first in Group B followed by Australia in second, meaning the Aussies will go into Group 1 as B2 in the second round regardless of their position on the table. Should an unseeded team make it out of the group, they will take the seed of the team they knocked out. If there are two unseeded qualifiers, it will revert to ladder position. All Super Eight matches will take place in the Caribbean.

If – and it's a big if in a T20 tournament – there are no major upsets and all the seeded teams progress, Australia will play Sri Lanka, New Zealand and India in that order in their three Super Eight fixtures.

The two top teams from each group in the Super Eight will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago on June 26 and 27 respectively. The final will be held in Barbados on Saturday, June 29. Reserve days have been scheduled for both semi-finals and the final.

Australia team news

Australia announced their 15-player squad on May 1 and the big talking point was Steve Smith being left out of a World Cup campaign for the first time in a decade. Selectors also resisted the urge to whisk IPL sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk into the touring party for what would have been his T20 international debut.

Western Australia allrounders Ashton Agar and Cameron Green were the two surprise selections for the 2021 champions having not played a T20I in almost 18 months. Mitch Marsh has been confirmed as captain of an experienced and settled side that could see opener Travis Head replacing retired former skipper Aaron Finch as the only change from the XI that contested Australia's opening match of the previous T20 World Cup.

Death specialist Nathan Ellis earned selection as the fourth fast bowling option behind the big three of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, while Adam Zampa will head four spins options for the Aussies including Agar, Glenn Maxwell and Head. Veteran opener David Warner will finish his international career following the tournament, while Maxwell, Tim David, Marcus Stoinis and wicketkeeper-batters Matthew Wade and Josh Inglis provide the middle-order options.

What are the host venues?

The 2024 men's T20 World Cup will be the largest in the tournament's history with 20 teams playing 55 matches across nine cities. It is the first time USA will host matches at a T20 World Cup, with 16 first-round games split between Nassau County International Cricket Stadium (New York), Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium (Dallas) and Broward County Stadium (Lauderhill).

Lauderhill in Florida has hosted international cricket since 2010, including most recently in August last year when West Indies hosted India at the venue for two T20s. Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas was built for Major League Cricket and hosted 12 matches in the inaugural season in 2023. New York will feature a brand-new international cricket venue with a purpose-built 34,000-seat modular stadium constructed 50km east of downtown Manhattan specifically for the World Cup. Eight matches will be played at the venue during the first round of the tournament, including the India-Pakistan blockbuster on June 9 (12.30am, June 10 AEST). The pitches for the new stadium have been curated by Damian Hough and his Adelaide Oval ground staff team.

Video - Nassau County International Stadium timelapse video

Six countries (Barbados, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines) will host matches in the Caribbean with Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad and Providence Stadium, Guyana the venues selected for the semi-finals and Kensington Oval, Barbados the final on June 29. The historic Sabina Park in Kingston won't host any matches during the tournament after the Jamaican government opted against bidding to host games.

Australia will play all their matches in the Caribbean, with the first two against Oman (10.30am, June 6 AEST) and England (3am, June 9 AEST) at Kensington Oval in Barbados. They'll then face Namibia (10.30am, June 12) at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Scotland (10.30am, June 16) at Daren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia. Should they qualify for the Super Eight stage they'll play their matches in Antigua, Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent and St Lucia.

Will there be warm-up fixtures?

There will, but the details are yet to be confirmed by the ICC. The Aussies are heading to Trinidad as their first port of call, where they'll have about a week to acclimatise, train and potentially play a practice match or two. Watch this space.

What does the winner get?

The ICC are yet to confirm the prizemoney to be carved up for the 2024 T20 World Cup. A cool US$5.6 million (that's A$8.5m) pot was on offer at the previous tournament hosted by Australia with all participating teams receiving something. England took home a hefty US$1.6m (A$2.5m) for winning the 2022 final at the MCG, while beaten finalists Pakistan received half of that.

Usman Khawaja: ‘I’m not going to let Cricket Australia dictate my happiness’ – Wisden Almanack

Usman Khawaja, the only unanimous pick in Wisden's Test XI of the Year for 2023, celebrates a century during the Ashes

Usman Khawaja was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year for 2023. Daniel Brettig’s piece on Khawaja originally appeared in the 2024 edition of Wisden Cricketer’s Almanack .

The Five Cricketers of the Year represent a tradition that dates back in Wisden to 1889, making this the oldest individual award in cricket. The Five are picked by the editor, and the selection is based, primarily but not exclusively, on the players’ excellence in and/or influence on the previous English season. No one can be chosen more than once.

Usman Khawaja finished his first Ashes tour, in 2013, unsure if he wanted to play for Australia again. He finished his second, six years later, wondering if his Test career was over. So it was with a sense of catharsis that he celebrated his hundred in the First Test at Edgbaston last summer, the opening contribution to a series in which – playing at his chosen tempo – he was the leading run-scorer, with 496 from a painstaking 1,263 balls.

If Khawaja found himself at the centre of a storm in the Lord’s Long Room, harangued by furious MCC members following the stumping of Jonny Bairstow, he did not let it get to him. After all, part of the reason he had become arguably the world’s leading Test opener was his comfort in his own skin, and willingness to express his thoughts. “MCC wanted me to write a statement, and I said: ‘No, these are your members.’ Plus, I didn’t want to detract from how good the on-field contest was. It was one of the great series.”

Khawaja is complimentary about England’s attack, scoffing at those who felt James Anderson was not performing. Their discipline, and Ben Stokes’s nifty field settings, were a long way from perceptions of Bazball as laissez-faire cricket. “It was more a war of attrition,” he says. “I reckon I’d score a lot faster against our bowlers than theirs. Bloody hell, those guys – they don’t give you many opportunities.”

USMAN TARIQ KHAWAJA was born in Islamabad, Pakistan, to Tariq Khawaja and Fozia Tariq, on December 18, 1986. His family emigrated to Australia when Usman was four, and settled in Sydney’s west, where he balanced a flair for study – he later attended university, and qualified as a pilot – with a flair for batting. One of his earliest team-mates in junior cricket was David Warner, a bond that would endure for three decades.

Runs for the Randwick Petersham club helped Khawaja into the New South Wales side in February 2008, followed by a first Baggy Green in January 2011, against England at the SCG. He was a rare bright spot for Australia in a grim Ashes summer, though his transition to the international game was far from seamless. Khawaja was still wrestling with who he was and, given his background and Muslim faith, how much he wanted to fit in with Australia’s cricket culture. He has spoken of wishing he were white, if only to blend in more easily. He was subjected to racial slurs, on and off the field. Largely through stubbornness, he forged on, never forgetting his social conscience. As recently as December, he failed to get permission from the ICC to sport the image of a dove on his right boot and bat during the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan – a gesture, he said, to show solidarity with the people of Gaza.

Back in 2013, Khawaja had already moved from NSW to Queensland, feeling he needed to become a more senior figure in a different environment, but was one of four Australian players suspended during the “homeworkgate” affair in India, amid criticism of his work ethic. When new coach Darren Lehmann dropped him after three Tests in England, he knew he needed a reset.

“I put a lot of pressure on myself, but I also didn’t feel like I was well supported in the team. I learned to let go and enjoy my cricket: I’m not going to worry about playing for Australia and, if I do play again, I’m not going to put it on a pedestal, or let Cricket Australia dictate my happiness. My dad was my biggest influence, and I always wanted to get a hundred for him. But he wouldn’t want me to play the game for anyone but myself.”

When Khawaja returned to the Test team in late 2015, he was more self-assured – captain of Queensland, and in a new relationship with Rachel McLennan, whom he would marry in 2018 (they have two children). Team-mates remarked on how he now wore his loves of American basketball and music on his sleeve. By the 2019 Ashes, Khawaja was a senior player but, in fiendishly tough conditions, he was dropped after three Tests. When that decision was compounded by his removal from the ODI team – despite being Australia’s most reliable run-maker over the preceding year – he felt his time was up. “In 2013, I wasn’t ready for it. I didn’t really understand how to score runs in England. In 2019, I was 100 percent ready, but those balls were diabolical, and the pitches too. I cannot explain to you how hard that was.”

An unexpected revival of his Test career began with twin hundreds against England at the SCG in January 2022, followed by a prolific series in his native Pakistan, and Khawaja maintained a clear mind before last summer. He was proud of his patience at Edgbaston, where he followed 141 in eight hours with 65 in more than five, batting on all five days; he also points to his opening stand with Warner of 73 on the first day at Lord’s.

If there are regrets, they involve the second day at Headingley, where Australia let slip a dominant position. “I still sledge Marnus [Labuschagne] about his sweep shot against Moeen Ali. If we’d batted another 30 minutes, they were cooked. That dismissal was just one of a few turning points that game. Afterwards, I was thinking: ‘Man, it feels like we might’ve just lost a massive opportunity, and I’m not sure we’ll get that again, because they’re a very good side.’”

At The Oval, where he made 47 and 72, Khawaja was vocal about the ball change in the 37th over that saw conditions revert to something more akin to 2019. He laughs when he remembers the England players’ reaction to their stroke of fortune, after he and Warner had made the perfect start to a big chase. “It’ll be one of those mysteries,” he says. “But they gave England a ball that was eight overs old – even Broady said that. Everyone knew.”

Above all, Khawaja is grateful to have played such a major part. It made the experiences of previous tours feel more worthwhile. “I would’ve loved to win an Ashes in England, and in a way we did – we won the Ashes because we retained them. The amount of people who told me in Australia how many sleepless nights they had: I’ve never had that kind of feedback from fans. People talk about 2005. Well, this was our 2005.”

England Women are using artificial intelligence to select their cricket team

England Women have been using Artificial Intelligence to help with team selection in a move that could help shape the future of the female game.

Jon Lewis, the side’s head coach, named his white-ball squads for his side’s upcoming T20 and ODI series against Pakistan and revealed how AI played a pivotal role in team selection during his side’s record-breaking Ashes series last summer.

England were huge underdogs heading into the multi-format series against champions Australia but ended up winning two white-ball trophies, which included a first T20 victory in seven years as the tourists were forced to settle for a draw.

Lewis first learned of AI during his time in charge of UP Warriorz after taking over the Women’s Premier League side in February 2023 and indicated the advancing technology could be a useful tool as the team builds towards September’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.

“It’s something that I looked at and thought, ‘Actually this could add some value to the England women’s cricket team,’” said Lewis. “What I would say is it’s not how we select the side, but it’s one part of selection that we use to help understand what could possibly happen in the future.

“We used it very successfully in the Ashes last summer with matchups against the Australian side. The one thing that is missing at the moment from that is the quality of historical data in the women’s game. As we move forward, with more and more competitions being played, especially at franchise level and international level, we’ll be able to get much more accurate data.”

There has been a global rush to capitalise on AI in sport, with the technology having already been rolled out across franchise cricket. Last month, Olympic organisers unveiled their own plans to use AI in sport to help judges and identify sporting talent, with Thomas Bach, the IOC president, describing it as a “revolution for sport.”

Lewis and his backroom team have been working with London-based sports data company Prospect, whose subsidiary, Oval, is the leading rugby analytics provider that has worked with the England men’s rugby head coach, Steve Borthwick.

“I can send multiple different lineups to the company and they run about 250,000 simulations per team that I send with all the different permutations that could happen through the game,” explained Lewis. “It’s something that is quite commonly used throughout cricket across the world in franchise cricket.”

While admitting AI could prove useful in making “borderline decisions” Lewis insisted he would always favour a people-first approach when it came to team selection, warning it was no substitute for the “cricketing eye”.

“Will it ever be the thing that selects a team? In my view, no,” he said. “Other coaches may feel very differently. There’s one selection in particular last year and one period of the Ashes that we targeted as a team around when we saw Australia’s real strength and we matched up our strength for that. That worked really well for us and it helped us win the T20 series in particular. That got us back in the Ashes.”

England’s upcoming T20 series against Pakistan will give players an opportunity to stake their claim for a spot in Lewis’ T20 squad for this year’s World Cup in Bangladesh. Linsey Smith and all-rounder Freya Kemp are included in the cohort, although the latter will only be deployed as a batting option as she continues her return to full fitness from a back-injury.

Tammy Beaumont has only been included in the one-day squad while Sophia Dunkley is the most high profile omission following a dip in form. Fast bowler Mahika Gaur, 18, is unavailable because of A-Levels but could return in time for the visit of New Zealand later this summer.

England play three T20s and three one-day internationals against Pakistan, with the first T20 at Edgbaston on May 11.

Jofra Archer picked by England for T20 World Cup after cruel run of injuries

Jofra Archer was selected in England’s provisional squad for the T20 World Cup on Tuesday, setting up a much-awaited international return for one of cricket’s most exciting bowlers whose career has been derailed by injuries.

The 29-year-old Archer has barely featured for England in any format since 2021, mainly because of ongoing issues with his right elbow for which he has undergone two operations. A back injury ruled him out of most of 2022.

The Barbados-born pacer was a breath of fresh air after switching nationality to be eligible for England ahead of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, which he helped his adopted country win on home soil. Then he played a starring role in the Ashes that year.

England will hope he stays fit to play in a four-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan and then the World Cup, which is being held in the Caribbean and the United States.

England’s opening match is against Scotland on June 4 at Kensington Oval in Barbados, which Robert Key — managing director of England men’s cricket — said would take on extra poignancy for Archer.

“He’s special,” Key said. “You do everything you can to try to get him back playing. We have taken the longer road this time. As always with Jofra, it’s fingers crossed until he’s out there playing. You know when you’re waiting for something really good to happen, you don’t quite believe it until it’s there.”

Archer, who hasn’t played competitive top-level cricket since May 2023, is currently out of the limelight and playing some club matches in the Caribbean to get himself match-sharp. He might get some matches for English county team Sussex before the Pakistan series, when England will put his fitness to the test.

In a recent interview, Archer said he didn’t know “if I’ve got another stop-start year in me.”

“I know it has been a massive toll on him,” Key said. “He hasn’t been around for a while now but every single thing he does creates noise and I think mentally it’s been tough.

“That’s why we made sure we try and get it right, let him go back home, spend some time in Barbados, doing the training there rather than staying in England all the time. It’s always been a balance with Jofra, trying to take into account his mental well-being and actually how we get him ready for what we need. Fingers crossed he gets a bit of luck he deserves really.”

Also in the 15-man squad were Jonny Bairstow and Will Jacks, who have hit big knocks in the Indian Premier League in recent weeks. Left-arm spinning allrounder Tom Hartley is the sole uncapped player in the group.

Key said players featuring in the IPL — the list also includes Jos Buttler and Phil Salt — would be returning to England for the Pakistan series starting on May 22, even if that means missing the latter stages of the IPL. The final is on May 26, with the playoff matches beginning May 21.

England will be captained by Buttler, with the team seeking a second T20 World Cup title.

England: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, Mark Wood.
