bike tours finger lakes region

Ease into this Finger Lakes bicycle tour with a warm-up ride along the Erie Canal. Geneva is home to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and the town showcases some of the region’s most historic and beautiful lakeside homes – one of which is now Geneva on the Lake, your accommodation for the evening. Join us for a welcome dinner tonight on the terrace.

Bluffs between the north-south running lakes feature expansive farmland and fabulous cycling. Roads are lightly traveled through miles of beautifully kept Mennonite farms where horse and buggy or bicycles are the most popular forms of transportation. Tonight we stay at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel, an upscale, newer hotel that features commanding views of the Seneca Lake.

Ride through rural farmland en route to Ithaca and scenic Cayuga Lake. Several country wineries beckon a visit along the route to the charming village of Aurora. A welcoming oasis awaits you at the end of your ride when you roll into the Inns of Aurora.

Visit the original estate of MacKenzie-Childs, the whimsical home decor manufacturer, or book a one-of-a-kind wine tour by boat.

Ride east to the town of Skaneateles at the north end of the lake that bears its name. Toast the week’s adventures during a reception and dinner at the Mirbeau Inn and Spa’s acclaimed restaurant.

The final ride of the week is one of our favorites. Follow the lakeshore south through verdant farmland as the route winds along the valley floor. Enjoy a leader hosted picnic lunch at a sculpture garden as you wrap up the week. You will be transferred to the airport in Syracuse in the afternoon.

Pack your camera, tempt your taste buds, cycle quiet rural roads and relax at scenic lakeside accommodations. Enjoy World-Class Vineyards, Stunning Natural Beauty and Charming Small Towns.

New York’s Finger Lakes region takes its name from the 11 pristine, freshwater lakes placed like a handprint between Lake Ontario and the Pennsylvania Border. The region encompasses 9,000 square miles. Glaciers carved out the Finger Lakes themselves as well as some of the beautiful surrounding landscape. Gorges and waterfalls can be found throughout the Finger Lakes region.

The Finger Lakes is one of the best-known regions in the world for almost 100 top-quality wines. Because of the lake’s great depths, they provide a lake effect to the lush vineyards that flank the shores. While cycling along the ridgelines we’ll enjoy the patchwork of farms, vineyards, and lake front communities. The Finger Lakes Wine Country has a rich cultural history with ties to glassmaking, winemaking and viticulture, aviation and motorcycle history, literary history, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War. We’ll visit charming villages with one-of-a-kind museums and unique shopping opportunities, fascinating sites, including the National Women’s Hall of Fame, Cornell University’s stunning campus, It’s a Wonderful Life Museum, and the spell-bounding Watkins Glen State Park. The area is a dream come true for water and outdoor activities. For the bicycling enthusiast, the choices are too many to take in a short 6-day tour.

This tour was designed with the help of long-time local guests of Cycle of Life Adventures. There is not a more perfect source for local knowledge than from local cyclists.

Fly into Ithaca or meet at our Starting hotel by 5PM for an orientation dinner.

FINGER LAKES BIKING

From Otisco Lake to Canandaigua Lake—and everywhere in between—you’ll find the Finger Lakes to be a great place for biking! – provided that you are in moderately good shape and are comfortable sharing the road, of course. During your Finger Lakes cycling voyage, explore beautiful wooded trails, waterfront rides, or the road routes that wind through this incredibly scenic region.

To further explore cycling in the Finger Lakes visit fingerlakescycling.org .

bike tours finger lakes region

HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE FINGER LAKES BIKING ROUTES

Otisco Lake  is a perfect spot for cycling. Otisco Valley Road runs alongside the eastern shores of the lake, and a leisurely ride along this route takes you through Amber, Bay Shore and Williams Grove. Cutting west across Sawmill Road takes you to Spafford Valley, where a right turn on West Valley Road takes you on a northwestern tack back up to the lake, where you can access the Causeway from the western shore of Lake Otisco. Otisco holds bike paths for all levels of riders with the eastern side of the lake being a leisurely pace and the western side being a higher level of difficulty.

The circuit around  Owasco Lake  is a popular Finger Lakes road cycling route with easy to moderate terrain. Emerson Park is generally the best starting and ending point. Here’s a suggested biking route that covers about 32 miles: follow Route 38 heading south along the west side of the lake all the way to Moravia, where you’ll turn right onto N. Main Street. Enter Fillmore Glen State Park on your left, then when you leave the park, turn right on Route 38 North, continue north on Main Street / Rockefeller Road and follow signs for Route 38A North, which will run along the east side of the lake all the way back to Emerson Park. While a longer ride than most beginners would take on, it is not very difficult terrain and makes for a fun challenge!

The 101-mile circuit around  Cayuga Lake  is a popular road route for biking, with Ithaca as a logical starting and ending point. This ride hugs the lake for most of the route, giving you great water views for the entire ride. For more experienced cyclists, this Finger Lakes biking route is longer than most of the others but you can do parts of it if you don’t want to bike the whole thing. Some of the hills are quite challenging but there are many stretches of easy terrain to even out your biking experience.

The  Seneca Lake  Loop is a 77-mile cycling route, with Lakeshore Park in Geneva being the most convenient starting and ending point. It’s a moderate ride, with only one grade to climb coming out of Watkins Glen.

Keuka Lake  is especially good for bicyclists. The 44-mile circuit around the lake is a popular route for Finger Lakes cycling, with spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding vineyards. What was once known as the “Crooked Lake Canal,” that linked Keuka Lake to Seneca Lake, has been out of use since 1870, but the path left by the canal is now put to good use by bikers prepared to get off the road. With just enough hills to be interesting, this is known as one of the best medium difficulty rides in the Finger Lakes!

Skaneateles Lake

Like most of the Finger Lakes, the area around Skaneateles Lake is good for bicyclists, provided that they are experienced with road riding. There are no marked biking trails on the lake, but the 32-mile circuit around the lake is a popular road route.

Meet the group just outside Ithaca on the relaxing campus of La Tourelle Hotel and Spa.  Following bike fittings, lunch and orientation, we will take our first ride in the Finger Lakes.  Expect some hills, but also a few stretches of relatively flat riding along valley roads through quaint country crossroads.  We'll end up back at La Tourelle for a dinner together onsite.

Our second day of bicycling will take us through downtown Ithaca and around the southern tip of Cayuga Lake.  We'll climb away from the lake briefly on rolling farmland toward the highest waterfall in the Finger Lakes region.  We will follow country roads that lead us to the shore of Seneca Lake where we'll pass through Watkins Glen.  Time permitting, hike a spectacular gorge with numerous waterfalls and cliffs.  It's a short distance from Watkins Glen to the Inn at Glenora Winery, our lodging for one night.  Relax at sunset in the Adirondack chairs gracing your private balcony overlooking the vineyard and Seneca Lake.  Take the opportunity to tour and taste at the award winning winery.  We will dine this evening as a group on the wonderful cuisine at the vineyard restaurant.

Rise early for a big day on the bike and some of the best lake views of the tour!  Start with a big climb away from Seneca Lake, or leap frog ahead in the van to start your ride at a high spot.   We'll make our way over to charming Hammondsport on the southern tip of Keuka Lake.  Pause in the quaint town square for a little ice cream.  Continue north along a road that tightly hugs the shore of Keuka Lake with numerous opportunities to soak up the sparkling water views.  Lunch will be a picnic at a waterfront park on the north end.  Our destination at the end of the day is Geneva On The Lake, an elegant, old world resort on the north shore of Seneca Lake.  You may want to venture into the charming downtown of Geneva or opt to take advantage of the many wonderful amenities of this special inn:  a 70 foot swimming pool, formal gardens, a 10 acre estate overlooking Seneca Lake and, in late afternoon, a ride on the inn's 24 foot pontoon boat.  We will dine as a group tonight on the moon-lit patio of the inn, weather permitting.

We bike today from Geneva to Skaneateles, our home for the next two nights.  The terrain will be flatter now that we are at the northern end of the Finger Lakes.  We leave Seneca Lake behind today, pedaling on to the charming riverfront town of Seneca Falls, whose Main Street claims to be the inspiration for the town of Bedford Falls in the movie, "It's A Wonderful Life."  Take a few minutes to explore the Women's Rights National Historic Park, where the first Women's Rights Convention was held in 1848.  After lunch, opt to continue biking to Skaneateles, a beautiful small town on the northern shore of Skaneateles Lake.  Stroll the lakefront park, or the many shops and boutiques dotting the downtown area, before dining as a group this evening at a local gourmet favorite.

Our "Layover Day" in Skaneateles affords you the option not to bike today, or to bike a distance of your choosing.  We will support a loop ride around Skaneateles Lake of up to 62 miles, with options to cut this distance in half.  You will enjoy walking the sidewalks of this quaint town with plenty of shops and restaurants.  Rent a kayak or sailboat and explore Skaneateles Lake, said to be New York's clearest.  Or, opt to visit one of the wineries on the outskirts of town for additional samples of Finger Lakes wine!  As a special treat, we have chartered a private boat cruise this afternoon prior to dinner.  Dinner this evening is on your own with numerous wonderful options within walking distance of our inn.

We say goodbye to Skaneateles this morning as we make our way west to the shore of Cayuga Lake.  Our final day of the tour offers a beautiful rural ride south to Ithaca.  The ride will start with flat terrain, then get hillier as we approach the southern end of the lake.  We'll return to our Ithaca hotel in time for a final catered lunch and pre-arranged showers.

Low end of tour price range reflects the 6 month Early Bird Discount, applied when you enroll and pay in full 6 months or more prior to your tour date.  High end of price range reflects no Early Bird Discount.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) in Rochester, New York. This regional airport is serviced by most major US domestic carriers. If you are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Rochester/University & Medical Center (the pickup location on the first day of your Trek Travel trip), you may call the hotel to arrange to be picked up by their complimentary airport shuttle.

For guests driving to the trip, we suggest driving to the Lake House on Canandaigua. Park in the hotel lot and you may drop your luggage at the front desk if you like, so that it may be delivered to your room later in the day. Please let the front desk staff know that you are with Trek Travel. Your guides will pick you up here on the first day of your trip between 10:45 AM and 11:00 AM. If you plan to do this please notify your trip consultant, so your guides will be aware of your arrival plans.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the Hilton Garden Inn Rochester/University & Medical Center (30 Celebration Dr, Rochester, NY 14620) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Once everyone has arrived, the group will shuttle approximately 40 minutes to the Lake House on Canandaigua to pick up any guests who may have driven their personal vehicles to the trip. From here the group will shuttle an additional 25 minutes to a winery near the shores of Seneca Lake. Upon your arrival to the winery you will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch and a wine tasting if you like. After lunch, your Trek Travel guides will ensure a comfortable fit to your Trek bicycle for the week before you begin your first ride of the trip. Please have your riding gear in a separate bag, since your luggage will be unloaded at the Lake House on Canandaigua and you will not have access to it during lunch or the bike fit.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their names and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call the Lake House on Canandaigua (585-394-7800) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. A taxi from the pickup hotel in Rochester to meet the group at the winery will cost about $150 and take about an hour.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 12:45 PM at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC). If you are flying out today, please do not book a flight that departs before 3:00 PM. If requested, your guides can also make a stop at the Hilton Garden Inn Rochester/University & Medical Center after the airport drop.

Conesus Lake

Conesus Lake

This all-paved road route starts at the southern end of Conesus Lake, and consists of gently rolling terrain for nearly the entire ride. The exception are two small hills: a tiny climb of just 40 ft around mile 2, and a slightly more challenging 1-mile-long climb of just 100 ft at mile 7. This ride is a great introduction to riding in the Finger Lakes Region, and is suitable for all levels of riders with an adventurous spirit. The small town of Lakeville is perfectly situated at the north end of the lake, halfway through the ride, and has lots of choices for lunch or snacks. Consider staying overnight nearby in the small towns of Geneseo or Honeoye, or slightly farther away in bigger Canandaigua, and use those overnight locations as a base to ride several of the surrounding lakes.

Hemlock Lake

Don't be fooled by the compact-size of Hemlock Lake, as it boasts both one of the longest climbs (start to mile 4), and one of the steepest climbs (mile 11 to 12) in the Finger Lakes Region. But happily, it also features probably the best downhill ride, in all of the Finger Lakes (mile 4 to 8). Care has been taken to choose all paved roads, which results in a slightly bigger loop around the lake then one might first expect when glancing at a map. There are no services of any kind on this route, so stock up on water and snacks prior to the start.

Canadice Lake

bike tours finger lakes region

Canadice Lake is the smallest of the eleven Finger Lakes, and this ride can easily be combined with one or two of it’s neighbor lakes for a delightful day of riding. The first 4 miles of this route are on a gravel/dirt trail, with a wonderful tree canopy, and is virtually flat. A mountain bike or any bike with wide tires is best for this route, although the last 4 miles are on paved roads, so you’ll probably be fine with nearly any bike, except for a road bike with very skinny tires. There are no services of any kind on this route, so stock up on water and snacks prior to the start.

Honeoye Lake

This ride starts at the north end of Honeoye Lake in the small cute town of Honeoye. You’ll find several locally owned businesses that sell yummy delights that are perfect to carry during your around-the-lake adventure, as there are no services on this route once you leave Honeoye. This all-paved route features gently rolling terrain, with the exception of 1 modest hill at the southern end.

There really is only one substantial climb on this route around Canandaigua Lake, and it is just a mile long and occurs fairly early, around mile 9. Push through that climb and you will be rewarded with fairly mild riding the rest of the way (OK -- there is another short climb around mile 33). Don’t skip the cute town of Naples, the grape capital of the Finger Lakes, positioned perfectly in the middle of the ride at the southern end of the lake. Grab some lunch at one of the cafes along Main St and don’t forget to sample the grape pie! This is an all paved road ride.

This loop ride is a real ego-booster, with 14 miles of some of the flattest lakeside riding in all of the Finger Lakes, followed by only one noticeable climb at the north end of the lake. Keuka lake is shaped like a "Y" and this route cuts across the top of the "Y" to avoid a wickedly steep climb in the middle of the "Y". Penn Yan sports a variety of lunch spots at the midpoint of the ride. The route down the east side of the lake jumps on and off of the aptly named East Lake Rd - a quiet residential road parallel to the busy highway NY-54A S. Try not to miss the numerous turns onto this road because it features some beautiful lakeside homes and cottages, not to mention riding within just a few feet of the lake. If it is a hot summer day, then you can’t beat ending the ride with ice cream in Hammondsport followed by swimming at Depot Park. This is an all-paved road ride.

Your heart will be pumping right from the start on the climb out of Watkins Glen, but the good news is that is the toughest climb of the day. There will be a few more challenging climbs but you will be rewarded each time with gorgeous views of Seneca Lake. You are in Amish country so keep a keen eye out for horse drawn vehicles. There are a plethora of wineries sprinkled along this route, and all make for great water and restroom stops. Geneva is perfectly positioned midway at the north end of the lake with many food options. Approximately 99% of the riding is on paved surfaces, including the spectacular lakeside bike path in Seneca Lake State Park. You’ll exit the park on a trail that briefly changes to loose gravel for about a half mile -- following this route avoids riding on busy State Hwy 5 & 20. Snoop around Watkins Glen and you’ll find several shops for ice cream and apres-bike refreshments.

Cayuga Lake

bike tours finger lakes region

This route features a broad loop around Cayuga Lake, the largest lake in the Finger Lakes region, with an emphasis on quiet low-traffic roads wherever possible, and mostly long gradual climbs. Yes, there are a couple of short steep climbs, but this presents an opportunity to savor the great views of the lake and countryside during the climbing! The ride ends with a nice downhill on the Black Diamond Trail - a rail trail with a crushed stone surface that is suitable for all types of bikes. The rest of the route is on all paved roads. Note: There are other routes around this lake that are slightly shorter, using all state highways, but they have more traffic, and more total climbing, hence the reason we recommend this particular route.

Owasco Lake

This ride starts with a long gradual climb up the west side of Owasco Lake, followed by a rapid descent to lake level. The route hugs the shoreline until turning slightly uphill just prior to entering the hustle and bustle of Auburn, which boasts, among other features, the home of Harriet Tubman (abolitionist who rescued slaves via the Underground Railroad), and a maximum security prison that has been in operation since the early 1800’s. There are several nice lunch spots in Auburn, including the italian-themed Osteria Salina and the Prison City Pub & Brewery, both featuring terrific food and outdoor dining with a view of you know what. The ride down the east side of the lake starts out pretty flat, but then encounters a steep climb around mile 27. (Recommendation: get some ice cream at Tom Thumb’s at mile 24 to energize before the climb.). There’s a great panoramic view of the lake and hills on quiet Sam Adams Lane - arguably one of the best views in all of the Finger Lakes. Watch for the historic marker for the childhood home of John D. Rockefeller along Rockefeller Rd, just prior to descending back down to lake level and returning to Moravia. This is an all-paved road ride.

Skaneateles Lake

You’ll start this ride from a hidden gem of a public park at the southern end of Skaneateles Lake and enjoy a blissful couple of miles of quiet flat lakeside riding, followed by a 2-mile-long very steep climb with terrific views of the lake. By mile 5, the steep climbing is done and it's time to enjoy a glorious downhill followed by lightly rolling terrain all the way into the town of Skaneateles. Many lunch options abound in Skaneateles, and if it is a hot day then take a dip in the lake, with convenient access from the downtown park. Prepare for a hot ride down the east side of the lake, heading due south into the sun, with a 5-mile-long gradual climb, some rolling terrain, and a short but steep final descent back down to lake level. This is an all-paved road ride.

Otisco Lake

Otisco Lake is tiny - just 6 miles tip-to-tip from north to south, but it is bounded by beautiful hills and valleys. This all-paved road route embraces the beauty of the surrounding area by forming an elongated loop with stunning lake views and some of the best hillside and valley riding in the Finger Lakes. The route starts with a very long, but fairly gentle climb, from mile 3 to 13, followed by a plunging descent with towering views of Otisco Lake - at times you may wonder if you are in an airplane or on a bike. Take a break in the middle of the ride and don’t miss Willowdale Bend - a funky combination of farm, wildlife sanctuary, farmers market, antique store, and outdoor cafe (be sure to check online for limited seasonal hours). This ride ends with 6 miles of the flattest valley riding found anywhere on the planet. That’s a perfect ending to a terrific ride, but it can be made even better by checking out the chicken barbecue and ice cream delights near the start/end in Homer!

10 Most Scenic Drives To Take In The Finger Lakes Region

  • The Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York offers a combination of natural beauty, dining, and cultural history, making it a must-visit destination.
  • Exploring the region through scenic drives allows travelers to experience lush landscapes, waterfalls, wineries, and breweries.
  • From Seneca Lake Scenic Byway to Keuka Lake, there are multiple routes to choose from, each offering picturesque views and notable stops for dining, wine tasting, and outdoor activities.

Upstate New York is known for its vast, lush landscapes , and the Finger Lakes region specifically stands out as a destination that capitalizes on this by combining its natural allures of stunning lakes and rivers with respectable dining, cultural history in charming small towns, and its status as New York's largest wine producer. With endless options of how to enjoy Finger Lakes, popularly starting with its abundant wine trails or heading straight for the outdoors, hiking or biking through colorful foliage , knowing where to start can be a big question.

Sometimes, the simplest answer is best, and merely getting in the car and seeing where the path leads can yield the greatest results. This certainly applies to particular routes in the Finger Lakes area, which simultaneously carry travelers through winding rural roads of farmland, vineyards, state parks, lakes, and rivers while still providing decadent options for dining, breweries, and wineries. Here are some of the most scenic drives in the Finger Lakes region that are absolutely worth picking up the keys for.

Route 414, Seneca Lake Scenic Byway

The expansive, 19-mile Seneca Lake Scenic Byway guarantees a pleasant drive no matter what route is taken, but the section along Route 414, which runs down its east side , is a highlight. It is a one-size-fits-all package including all one could hope for on a day spent driving through nature, from scenic overlooks and waterfalls to exquisite dining and a myriad of wineries and breweries to explore. Drivers begin following the road amid lush landscapes and shale cliffs overhead before they pass Hector Falls, and then soon after comes time to eat and drink.

  • Recommended eats: regional cuisine at Stonecat Cafe , Viennese wine-centric meals at Dano's Heuriger on Seneca
  • Top-rated wineries and breweries: Two Goats Brewing and Grist Iron Brewing for beer lovers, Damiani White Cellars and Wagner Vineyards for wine fanatics

Route 14S, Seneca Lake Scenic Byway

Another outstanding ride around Seneca Lake is Route 14S, which leads travelers from Geneva into the thick of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Following the ride through exuberant acres of vineyards, the route ends near locally renowned Watkins Glen State Park , which is one of a variety of state parks found in the Finger Lakes region . Within an area of less than two miles, the glen flows over many 200-foot cliffs and creates an impressive number 19 waterfalls in its path. Watkins Glen State Park also offers great cabin rentals for those seeking an extended getaway.

Elmira to Maple Hill State Forest via Jerusalem Hill Road

A rather short but very sweet driving route can be found by starting from Elmira and taking Jerusalem Hill Road to the east towards Maple Hill State Forest . This ride quickly brings on the nice landscape views of the Chemung River before carrying drivers into extensive farmland and more tree lines until the path culminates at the 604-acre Maple Hill State Forest . This combination makes the drive great for a swift but scenic outing with an option for some hiking or relaxing outside to complete a bigger day trip.

Route 54, Keuka Lake

Keuka Lake provides a variety of beautiful drives to take, but Route 54 is one that stands out from the crowd. The road lies between Penn Yan and Hammondsport and, as is par for the course in this area, provides travelers with tranquil lakeside views and expansive vineyards to visit along the way. The entrance to Keuka Lake State Park can be found along this route as well.

  • Notable stops: Keuka Lake State Park , Stever Hill Vineyards , Glenn H. Curtiss Museum

Route 76, Keuka Lake

Another Keuka Lake highlight is found on its west side on Route 76. This route is known for providing some of the most picturesque views of Keuka Lake and the surrounding bluff as it is one of the higher roads in the area, and it is, of course, surrounded by impeccable options for wine and food. Route 76 runs from Hammondsport and northward towards Pulteney (its alternate name is South Pulteney Road) before it veers away from the lake and leads toward Urbana State Forest.

  • Recommended stops: Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars , Keuka Brewing Co.

Route 23 From Hammondsport to Watkins Glen

A possibly overlooked gem of a drive in the Finger Lakes area is one long Route 23, which leads to Watkins Glen from the west. Route 23 is most easily reached via Tyrone and leads straight to the gorgeous Watkins Glen. This makes for a spectacular finish to the relaxing yet stimulating ride through the hilly countryside as it weaves between farmlands and views of Waneta Lake.

South Bristol to County Road 12 Scenic Overlook

The road from South Bristol to Carolabarb Park's scenic overlook via County Road 12 makes for a daytime outing that is quick and easy but with a beautiful payoff. Simply head south from South Bristol on Route 64 until turning onto County Road 12 , which leads straight to the overlook point. The overlook of Carolabarb Park, which has in the past been voted as one of the best scenic spots in the area, gives panoramic views of Canandaigua Lake and the nearby Land Trust’s Great Hill Nature Preserve.

Owego to Corning

This scenic drive is special in that its beginning and end points make up just as much of the fun as the drive itself, as the journey is bookended by two fabulously charming small towns worth spending some time in. Owego and Corning are small communities packed with cultural history, cute cafes, restaurants, and river walks, including Upstate New York's only Smithsonian Affiliate museum. Perhaps after coffee and breakfast or lunch in Owego, simply take Route 96 northward and enjoy the ride as the road travels through rolling farmlands until ending with views of the Chemung River just before arrival in Corning.

  • Owego highlights: Many local farm stores, Tioga County Historical Society, Riverwalk Park
  • Corning Highlights: Eat and shop on Market Street, Corning Museum of Glass, The Rockwell Museum

Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway

No list of driving adventures in this area is complete without mentioning the Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway which provides an 87-mile loop of perpetual views, outdoor fun, shopping, and dining all surrounding the stunning Cayuga Lake. This loop showing off Cayuga and its varied shores and landscapes has so much to offer that it is recommended to visit the official website to plan ahead.

  • Some top-rated stops: Buttonwood Grove Winery & Cabins, Discover Cayuga Lake Boat Tours, 1833 Kitchen & Bar, Fargo Bar & Grill

Keuka Outlet Trail

The Keuka Outlet Trail is a 7-mile road with various access points in the area following along an outlet from its namesake lake until its convergence with Seneca Lake. The path makes for a nice drive but is also comfortable for pedestrians and bikers as well. Along this trail, travelers can simply follow the signage to find stops at Seneca Mills Falls or Cascade Falls.

This trail is best enjoyed in the fall or spring, as the abundance of foliage is truly a strength of the landscape along the path.

Recreational and Natural Units

The Quarry Lakes Recreation Unit includes Horseshoe Lake and Rainbow Lake and the turf, beach, swimming and picnic areas around those lakes. Visitors can swim in the designated beach, picnic, play volleyball, fish, and enjoy non-gasoline powered watercraft.  Please note boats that are equipped with gasoline engines are not allowed to enter the park even if you don't plan on using the gas motor. The Natural Unit includes Willow Slough and Lago Los Osos and the surrounding areas, where visitors can hike, observe nature, walk dogs and ride bicycles. No water contact of any type is allowed in these two lakes. Dogs must always be kept on leash throughout the entire park.

Hiking and Biking

The Quarry Lakes Natural Unit provides visitors excellent opportunities to hike and ride bicycles. The park's trail network connects to the Alameda Creek Regional Trail, which extends from Niles Canyon westward all the way to Coyote Hills and the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge on San Francisco Bay.

The swim complex includes the white sandy beach, restrooms and lifeguard service. There is a fee for entry into the swimming complex. No alcohol, glass containers, personal barbecues, dogs, bicycles, or scooters are allowed in the swim beach area, and fishing is not permitted. No diapers, including swim diapers, are allowed in the water. One beach wheelchair is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. For information on fees and lifeguard schedule,  visit the Niles Beach at Quarry Lakes page .

  • Conditions  [PDF]

Swim Facilities Capacity Notice Once the swim facility capacity is reached, there will be no new entries allowed for the remainder of the day (or at the discretion of the Park Supervisor), for the safety of the public. Please take this into consideration when planning your visit.

Fishing is permitted ONLY in the Recreational Unit of Quarry Lakes, which includes Horseshoe Lake and Rainbow Lake. A California Fishing License is required for all anglers aged 16 and above. An EBRPD Daily Fishing Access Permit is also required for all anglers age 16 and over. The Daily Fishing Access Permit may be purchased at the park entry kiosk. Daily Fishing Access Permit sales fund the planting of trout and catfish in Horseshoe Lake. For information on getting a Fishing Access Permit,  see the Permits page . For fish planting schedule see  Angler's Edge Online . Note that daily bag limits apply at all fishing locations. Find that and other Park District fishing information at  the Fishing section  of our site.

Please note that the use of lead fishing weights is prohibited at Quarry Lakes.   In partnership with the Alameda County Water District, the  Quarry Lakes Lead Fishing Tackle Awareness and Exchange Program  was created to educate local anglers on the hazards of using lead fishing tackle and to provide the opportunity for a no-cost exchange of toxic lead split-shot weights and sinkers for lead-free split-shot weights and sinkers. The kiosk attendant will exchange weights at any time the kiosk is open, currently 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. They will exchange one-for-one of the following items, (maximum 15 items per visit): splitshot; egg weights, ¼, 3/8, ½, ¾, 1 oz.; bullet weights 1/8, and ¼ oz.

Sailboards/stand-up paddle boards, canoes, kayaks, and boats with electric-powered motors may be launched into Horseshoe Lake from the boat launch. Since the lakes are used for groundwater recharge, gasoline-powered engines are not allowed to enter the park by regulation of the Alameda County Water District even if you don't plan on using the gas motor. For boat launch information and a schedule of fees, see our  Boating and Sailing  page. All watercraft must be inspected prior to launching.

  • Float tubes may be launched into Horseshoe Lake and Rainbow Lake. Persons using float tubes  must wear waders or other wet-suit material  to prevent body contact with the water.
  • Hydrofoils and E-Foils are not permitted on the lake per  Ordinance 38 .

Dog Walking

Dogs are not allowed in the water anywhere in the park, and dogs are not allowed to pass the beach gates or be in the swim beach area. Please note that all dogs must remain on leash at all times while in the park (leashes may not exceed six feet in length). This regulation is necessary due to the recreational nature of the park and to protect the wildlife and ecosystems in the park's natural unit. Commercial dog walkers are required to obtain a commercial permit, regardless of how many dogs they walk at one time (limit of six). For information, call  (510) 690-6508 . Private individuals or families do not need a permit in order to walk up to three dogs at a time, but must still pay the dog fee. Those who wish to walk four to six dogs must obtain a permit to do so. For information on getting a Dog Permit,  see the Permits page .

Scavenger Hunt

The gardens at Quarry Lakes were developed to provide public & private partnerships for provision of horticulture planting demonstration areas. In 2003, inspired by the long history of nurseries and flowering fruit trees in the area, Park Supervisor Jim Larrance and Park Gardener David Pellarin began developing the gardens. View the gardens while going on a scavenger hunt for subtropical, conifer, or rare fruit trees. Bring your GPS or smart phone to locate trees based on coordinates. An alternative way to play is by using your orienteering skills and a map. Maps are included in the scavenger hunt brochures as well as on Google Maps. Google Maps can be accessed from the links below or via the QR codes located at the park. How many listed plants can you find?

Rare Fruit Tree Stroll - CANCELED

History is everywhere in the area of Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area in Fremont. Native Americans inhabited the region for millennia before the arrival of Europeans, notably in the sites that are now preserved at Coyote Hills Regional Park west of Quarry Lakes.

Quarry Lakes incorporates the historic boundaries of two Mexican ranchos and the former Mission San Jose lands. Alameda Creek was the original boundary between Contra Costa and Santa Clara Counties. Alameda County was carved out of these two counties in 1853 and was named after the creek that drains it.

The quarries for which Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area is named were established in the mid-19th century. Gravel taken from the banks of Alameda Creek was used in the construction of the transcontinental railroad's western section.

After quarrying came to an end, the lakes began to be used for groundwater recharge by the Alameda County Water District, which diverts water from Alameda Creek into the pits.

Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area is the culmination of many years of planning and partnership between the Water District and the East Bay Regional Park District. The property that now comprises the park was acquired by the two agencies between 1975 and 1992 through purchase, donation and inter-agency agreements. Of the park's 471 acres, some 350 acres are the lakes.

The first phase of park construction began in 1997, when the Alameda County Water District used grading equipment to flatten the slopes of the quarry pit. This minimized erosion and sedimentation, while also creating land contours more suitable for parkland.

Then in August of 2000 the Park District began creating the recreational facilities at Quarry Lakes. These include turfgrass lawns, picnic areas, shade pavilions, a swim beach, a boat launch ramp, and a trail network.

Cost of the project's first phase was $5.8 million, of which $3.65 million was a grant from the City of Fremont Redevelopment Agency. The remainder came from Measure AA, the Park District's open space bond measure approved by voters in 1988.

In the Finger Lakes, not only can you taste some of the world's best rieslings, but you can also spend the night in a castle – with a winery. Located on the shores of Seneca Lake, Belhurst Castle and Winery provides the perfect setting for a romantic getaway in New York.

While the property consists of three hotels, the Chambers in the Castle is the most romantic option for couples. Here, 11 Victorian-era guest rooms – each architecturally and stylistically distinct – feature antique furnishings, some with four-poster beds. There are also three cottages available to rent. Guests of the Chambers enjoy cozy fireplaces and complimentary wine from a self-serve wine spigot.

In addition to wine, Belhurst makes its own craft beer and hard cider, which patrons can enjoy at the winery tasting room or two on-site restaurants. The hotel also offers a spa and salon. The hotel reviews of Belhurst Castle are mixed, but most recent guests agree the staff is wonderful and the property is beautiful.

The Lake House is the first hotel of its kind to open on Canandaigua Lake, the fourth largest of the Finger Lakes. Of course, guests can enjoy Canandaigua Lake via kayak, stand-up paddleboard, private boat charter or even a morning coffee cruise. Light and airy guest rooms and suites feature handcarved furniture, rain showers, and plush robes and slippers; some first-floor rooms are pet-friendly.

Cooperstown is undeniably family-friendly – it's home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and Cooperstown Dreams Park, after all. But this central New York village is also ideal for a romantic weekend getaway, whether you and your beau are baseball fans or not.

Nicknamed "America's Most Perfect Village," Cooperstown boasts plenty of boutiques, breweries and art galleries, such as the Fenimore Art Museum, located on a property once owned by James Fenimore Cooper, author of "The Last of the Mohicans." In the winter, you and your partner can also try cross-country skiing or showshoeing at Glimmerglass State Park.

The village's grand dame, The Otesaga Resort Hotel, features romantic accommodations in which couples can wake up to the sun rising over Otsego Lake. Seasonally, hotel guests can enjoy water sports on the lake and cocktails at the outdoor Fire Bar overlooking the water. The luxury resort also features the Hawkeye Spa and fine dining at 1909 on Friday evenings. Other romantic dining options in Cooperstown include Brewery Ommegang (once famous for its limited-edition "Game of Thrones"-inspired beers); Nicoletta's Italian Café; and Origins Cafe, a farm-to-table restaurant inside of a greenhouse.

Glenmere Mansion: Chester

Interior of guest room at Glenmere Mansion.

You'd never guess that this 150-acre estate is located in the U.S., let alone that it's only around 70 miles from New York City. Constructed in 1911, the mansion – then the summer home of industrialist Robert Goet – sits in the countryside of the Hudson Valley, intended to resemble the villas of Tuscany at the time. Now a Relais & Châteaux boutique hotel , Glenmere Mansion features more than a dozen guest rooms, each one thoughtfully redesigned and unique. Most rooms have fireplaces, and many offer terraces.

Romantic retreats can (and should) include indulging at the Glenmere spa, which features a tandem suite with side-by-side soaking tubs and treatment tables. Guests of the spa enjoy pre- or post-treatment tapas and access to a variety of amenities, including an herbal steam room, dry heat sauna and a Swiss shower.

Visitors at Glenmere also have access to four fine dining venues and local activities such as historic sightseeing and wine tasting at the award-winning Brotherhood Winery, widely considered the oldest winery in the U.S. Note that Glenmere Mansion is an adults-only resort . Many previous guests praise Glenmere, noting that the food is exceptionally good.

Mohonk Mountain House: New Paltz

Perhaps the grandest of all the mansions and castles in New York (and the U.S.) is Mohonk Mountain House. Founded in 1869, the resort can be found tucked into the Hudson Valley, less than 100 miles from New York City.

Another major draw? It's one of few all-inclusive resorts in the U.S. Rates include three farm-to-table meals daily plus afternoon tea and cookies; a roster of activities, spanning water sports on Lake Mohonk to 85 scenic miles of hiking trails; wellness offerings such as a spa and fitness classes; nightly entertainment including live music and seasonal campfires; and, for families, additional kid-specific activities. Couples can choose Victorian-style guest room or suite accommodations with wood-burning fireplaces in the Mountain House, or opt to stay in the more private Grove Lodge.

While this National Historic Landmark resort is pricey, previous guests agree the cost is well worth the experience.

While the Catskills may always be synonymous with "Dirty Dancing," the region looks a bit different than it did when Frances "Baby" Houseman and Johnny Castle fell in love here. A boom in boutique lodging options is once again attracting travelers to an area that saw a period of decline from the 1970s until recent years.

Modern-day Babys and Johnnys can now go glamping at AutoCamp Catskills; spend the night at Wylder Windham, a full-service boutique hotel next to Windham Mountain Resort; relax in rustic-luxe rooms with soaking tubs at Urban Cowboy Lodge; tuck into cozy cabins at Eastwind Windham, which also features standalone saunas in the woods; or even spend the night at a revamped retro motel such as the Starlite Motel, with its outdoor pool. Throughout the region couples will also find breweries and cideries, U-pick farms, and (of course) the outdoor adventures that first put the Catskills on the map: skiing, hiking, biking and more.

The Niagara Falls illuminated at night.

Courtesy of Niagara Falls USA

Known as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is the original romantic getaway in New York. Couples in search of romance have been visiting the region since the 1800s, particularly after the Erie Canal opened. Connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River, the canal – along with railroad expansions – made Niagara Falls a more accessible vacation destination for honeymooners.

Today, couples who want to experience the beauty of this natural wonder can hike or bike scenic trails at Niagara Falls State Park. You and your sweetheart can also watch a nightly illumination of the falls from a cozy blanket in the park, which is an especially colorful spectacle during Pride Month. Of course, there are plenty of guided tours in Niagara Falls , including the iconic Maid of the Mist (where Pam and Jim said their vows).

The New York side of Niagara Falls is home to a large wine region, with the Niagara Wine Trail offering more than a dozen wineries. For romantic accommodations, look to The Giacomo in the heart of downtown. Hutton Brickyards: Kingston

The Hudson Valley's last architecturally intact brick manufactory, Hutton Brickyards, sits on more than 70 lush acres overlooking the Hudson River. Here, lovebirds can hide out in waterfront cabins and luxurious suites designed to optimize privacy, then enjoy on-site activities such as spa treatments, yoga, sip-and-paint sessions, archery, kayaking and nature walks. The property's alfresco waterfront restaurant, The River Pavilion, serves elevated wood-fired cuisine alongside the fireplaces. Other upscale eateries as well as boutiques can be found in downtown Kingston.

Within view of the Rhinecliff Amtrak station, Hutton Brickyards is an easy trip for New Yorkers seeking some respite from the busy city. Previous guests can't say enough good things about this seemingly hidden gem, noting that the cabins are especially cozy.

Reenact your favorite rom-com moment in New York City, where there are endless places to fall in love – from world-class museums and award-winning restaurants to studio tours, skyline views and some of the country's best Pride events . In the architecturally awe-inspiring Hudson Yards neighborhood, which officially opened in 2019, lovers will find shopping, dining, special events and an on-site hotel.

Speaking of hotels, while the city may never sleep, you probably will, and there's no shortage of romantic lodging options in New York City. At The James New York – NoMad , which sits just steps from the Museum of Sex, curious couples can participate in intimacy workshops that teach you and your partner how to connect breath, emotions and sensations. Another potential accommodation choice is The High Line Hotel , a Parisian-style property whose Remote View garden serves extrasensory cocktails inspired by Ingo Swann, known as a pioneering psychic. At the TWA Hotel, meanwhile, guests enjoy the glamour of 1960s travel (think "Mad Men") as you sip martinis by a rooftop pool that overlooks the runways of John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Read: The Top Things to Do in Long Island

Guests sit outside at a vineyard at sunset.

While the Hamptons remains an elite vacation spot on Long Island, the North Fork has been giving that resort destination a run for its money – especially in recent years. Thanks to an ideal terroir for growing grapes, Long Island has an established wine scene, with most of the vineyards and wineries located on the North Fork. You'll find many of the region's wineries along Route 25 (the main thoroughfare); guided wine tours with a personal driver are a popular way to taste the region's signature wines, which include merlot, cabernet franc and chardonnay. In June, many of the wineries celebrate Pride Month.

The area is also dotted with U-pick farms and farmers markets, some of which sell another local delicacy: oysters. For an essential North Fork experience, pair your oysters with wine at places such as Terra Vite North Fork Winery & Vineyard and Peconic Bay Vineyards – the latter offers oyster happy hours seasonally.

Couples can relax by the seaside in Orient Beach State Park, where beachgoers enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, fishing and other opportunities for outdoor recreation. Round out your romantic getaway in Long Island with a game of golf and some upscale dining, then check into one of the North Fork's boutique hotels or bed-and-breakfasts .

Exterior of Abbey Inn & Spa in Westchester County.

Often considered New York City's sixth borough, Westchester County is perfect for a weekend getaway with your partner. Just north of Manhattan, set between the Hudson River and Long Island Sound, Westchester County offers a little bit of everything: quaint river towns (including the legendary Sleepy Hollow), beaches, historic landmarks, seasonal events, and hiking and biking trails galore. You can also traverse the Westchester Farm Trail, which encompasses 13 farms and orchards with markets, U-pick options and more.

Romantic accommodations in Westchester County include the Bedford Post Inn, a Relais & Châteaux property with just eight rooms (many with fireplaces) and two highly rated farm-to-table restaurants. The Abbey Inn and Spa, which overlooks the Hudson River, is another lovely lodging option: Once a convent, the stunning building now houses luxurious guest rooms and suites, a restaurant, and a full-service spa where you and your lover can unwind with a lava stone couples massage.

Whiteface Lodge: Lake Placid

It doesn't get more romantic than Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid. The AAA Four Diamond resort boasts a variety of rustic-luxe suites (including one-bedroom options), most with cast-iron fireplaces, jetted tubs, and patios or balconies. Romantic on-site amenities and activities include evening drinks under the stars in a private lean-to; a spa with hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas; ice skating in the winter; and fine dining at Kanu, where guests say the atmosphere alone is worth a dinner reservation.

A two-time host of the Winter Olympics, Lake Placid offers a variety of Olympics-inspired museums and experiences, with unique winter activities including bobsledding at Mount Van Hoevenberg and dog-sledding on frozen Mirror Lake. Of course, there's also skiing, snowboarding and the like at Whiteface Mountain, one of the best ski resorts in New York . While you're visiting, take time for a romantic stroll along Lake Placid's Main Street, which looks like a Norman Rockwell painting. Previous guests adore Whiteface Lodge, noting that it's ideal for both couples and families.

The Sagamore Resort: Bolton Landing

Massage beds at the spa in The Sagamore Resort.

There are plenty of vacation rentals on Lake George, but if you're looking for the ultimate escape with your partner, book a stay at The Sagamore Resort (part of the Opal Collection). Located on a 70-acre private island in the Adirondacks, the hotel features award-winning dining, an 18-hole golf course, a full-service spa, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Especially unique is the annual Glacier Ice Bar & Lounge, where 18,000 pounds of crystal-clear ice are transformed to create an Antarctic setting overlooking Lake George.

If you're seeking a private outdoor space and/or fireplace, a spacious option is a two-bedroom condo (or perhaps a four-room condo or house if you're traveling with other couples). Otherwise, you'll be perfectly comfortable in a lodge room or suite, some of which also come with fireplaces or balconies. Previous guests say this historic resort – first opened in 1883 and even considered by some to be a haunted hotel – is absolutely majestic.

Address: 110 Sagamore Road, Bolton Landing, NY 12814

Troutbeck: Amenia

Tuck into Troutbeck, a historic estate hotel whose most famous guests include Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Located in the Hudson Valley, the hotel features field-to-fork dining led by Michelin-starred chef Gabe McMackin, as well as The Barns, a wellness facility featuring yoga, meditation and Kinesoma classes (dance-based movement). The wellness offerings also include services such as acupuncture and massages. An outdoor swimming pool and grill, hammock and picnic sites, tennis courts, and free bike rentals complement the serene setting.

For an especially romantic lodging option, book the Dunham Suite, named for its lovely view of the nearby creek. The suite features a king-size, four-poster bed; a gas fireplace; a wet bar with a minifridge; heated bathroom flooring; and a standalone soaking tub and separate rain shower. Recent guests say they enjoyed the beauty and history of this hotel from the 1700s.

The William B. Hoyt II Visitor Center at the Mount Morris Dam and Recreation Area opens to the public Wednesday, May 1 for its 2024 visitor season. Located on the Genesee River next to Letchworth State Park, the dam provides flood protection to downstream communities, including the City of Rochester, as well as a place to enjoy nature and outdoor recreation for the 72nd year. “With a special opening for this year’s total solar eclipse weekend, more than 1,000 visitors from across the country got an early taste of what the Mount Morris Dam and Recreation Area has to offer,” said Lt. Col. Lyle Milliman, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District. “This is a must-see for students and families, tourists, nature-lovers, history buffs, and engineers alike to see the amazing features of the dam and the beauty of the area that surrounds it.” The Mount Morris Dam is the largest concrete gravity dam east of the Mississippi river, standing 250 feet tall and spanning 1,028 feet, with the ability to store nearly 302,000 acre-feet of water in the reservoir behind it. Marking 72 years in service this year, the dam is still an active project maintained and operated by the USACE Buffalo District and has provided an estimated $4.1 billion in flood damage protection to the community. Visitors can join USACE Ranger-led walking tours to see the dam’s inner workings and enjoy unique perspectives. Outside the dam, they can enjoy the recreation area, with captivating views of the Letchworth Gorge – known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” “Our tours offer a rare opportunity to go inside a working flood risk management project, and one with such historic significance,” said Steve Winslow, Mount Morris Dam and Recreation Area manager. “It’s an immersive experience.” Visitors can view schedules and reserve tickets online up to seven days in advance by visiting Recreation.gov and searching for “Mount Morris Dam Tours.” The recreation area also includes the William B. Hoyt II Visitor Center, where visitors can learn about the dam, the Army Corps of Engineers, and local plants and wildlife; access to hike, bike or run on the Finger Lakes Trail; picnic areas with pavilions, grills, and a playground. For new and experienced birders, the recreation area and surrounding Letchworth State Park is one of the National Audubon Society’s more than 2,800 Important Bird Areas worldwide. Iconic birds such as the Peregrine Falcon and Bald Eagle can often be seen flying over the area. The visitor center is located at 6103 Visitor Center Road, Mount Morris, NY 14510 and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with tours offered May 1 through October 25, 2024. All activities at the dam and recreation area are offered for free, although a non-refundable service fee of $1 per ticket is charged by Recreation.gov for online reservations. Visitors can sign up for walking tours in-person at the visitor center, but availability is not guaranteed. Online reservations are recommended. Call (585) 659-4790 for more information or visit the Mount Morris Dam and Recreation Area website: https://www.lrd.usace.army.mil/Recreation/Article/3613898/mount-morris-dam/.
