Age-Specific Activities – Frequently Asked Questions

Will we meet Disney Characters on our cruise?

Yes! The moment you board your ship, opportunities abound to meet favorite Disney Characters and pose for photos or add new autographs to your book. You’ll see Characters around the ship, in stage shows and during kids’ activities in our youth clubs. And if one of your ports of call is Castaway Cay , you’ll have a chance to meet Disney Characters during an onshore Dance Party.

Special Onboard Character Greetings On your cruise, you may just find yourself face-to-face with royalty at the Princess Gathering, where you’ll get to meet several of your favorite Characters all at one time. Some itineraries are also graced with the presence of Princess Anna and Queen Elsa from Frozen . Additionally, Character meet-and greets also occur on select sailings during the Disney Junior Character Breakfast and the Disney VIP Character Breakfast.

To provide a more relaxed experience during these special Character Greetings, complimentary tickets are required. You can reserve your tickets for select Character experiences online before you even board the ship. Once your cruise is paid in full, make reservations within your advance booking window, which is determined by your Castaway Club membership level, as follows:

To book an activity online:

  • Log in to My Reservations .
  • Locate “My Cruise Activities”; then you can “View or Add Activities.”
  • On your day-by-day itinerary plan, choose the day you’d like to reserve your activity; then select from the options provided.
  • You’ll see a list of available choices. Select the ones you’d like to do that day. You can then review your selections and add them to the cart.

A limited number of tickets may also be available on the first day of your cruise. Please check with Guest Services once on board the ship to determine if there is availability.

Keep in mind that Character appearances are subject to change. Since space is extremely limited, only one reservation per ticketed event per voyage is allowed. Additional Character appearances that do not require a ticket are available throughout your cruise.

CAPACITY Passengers: 2,700 Staterooms: 877 Crew (aka "Cast Members"): 950

The Crew-to-Passenger ratio equals out to one Cast Member for every 2.8 guests!

Is that included, disney magic dining, main dining, about disney magic restaurants.

Disney Magic features "Rotational Dining."

On Disney Cruise Line, you'll rotate between three main restaurants, offering you a  different dining experience every night for dinner. Your service crew will move with you.

Here are the three Disney Magic restaurants that are part of the rotational dining.

Lumiere's Restaurant on Disney Magic cruise ship

Image: Disney Cruise Line

Exclusive to the Disney Magic, Lumiere’s is a Beauty and the Beast themed dining room. Here you’ll enjoy American cuisine for breakfast and lunch and French fare for dinner. Come and, as they sing, "Be Our Guest"!

Rapunzel Royal Table Restaurant on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Rapunzel's Royal Table

Another Disney Magic exclusive inspired by the Disney classic, Tangled . This dining experience is part of the rotational dining and features characters, live entertainment, singing and dancing. RRT is like no other! Also open during breakfast and lunch for non-rotational dining.

Disney Wonder Animator's Palate

Animator's Palate

There is a reason this is such a fan-favorite. Experience Disney animations in real life while you eat. We won't reveal too much here, but check out my Animator's Palate tips here - read tips #43-46.

Casual Dining

Disney Magic Cruise Ship Cabanas Buffet

You'll probably become very familiar with Cabanas on your cruise, because it is the main buffet restaurant. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (for those who prefer to skip their rotational dining or are late to their Main Dining seating). So much variety here, they serve snacks, appetizers, desserts and entrees of every kind. Various selections will change from meal to meal, while others are constant fixtures on the menu. If you find a favorite dish, (Mickey Mouse pancakes anyone?) this can be comforting for finicky eaters, especially your little ones.

Disney Magic Preludes

EYE SCREAM TREATS

Every kid's dream come true: all the ice cream you can eat. And it's FREE! Hey, it's vacation, so I say go ahead and indulge your craving while on your Disney Cruise.

Along with soft-serve ice cream, you'll find plenty of toppings. My kids may have gone just  a little overboard with the all-you-can-eat (okay me too) but hey...it's vacation!

Disney Magic Frozone Smoothies

FROZONE TREATS

Disney Magic Pete's Boiler Bites

PETE'S BOILER BITES

Disney Wonder Pinocchio's Pizzeria

PINOCCHIO'S PIZZERIA

Disney Magic Beverage Station

BEVERAGE STATION

I tend to spend a lot of time visiting the Beverage Station on Deck 9.

Why? Because the drinks here are FREE. Drink options include water, soda, juices, coffee, tea, milk, fruit punch, lemonade, and hot cocoa.

The bars and lounges on board will charge you extra for sodas, but it is free here. Check out tip #48 on my Disney Cruise Tips to enjoy more free soda.

Disney Magic Room Service Menu

ROOM SERVICE

Brought to your stateroom

Disney Magic's room service menu is surprisingly large. The options are available at any time of the night or day.

Exclusive Dining

Looking for an adult only meal? Or something that will make your little one beam for days on end? The Disney Magic offers exclusive dining opportunities to fulfill those wishes.

Palo Restaurant on Disney Wonder Cruise Ship

Image: Brownie Bites

This is the Disney Magic's finest dining experience and it is available only for adults.

In our opinion, the Northern Italian menu is worth the premium fee you pay for it. When you top off the delicious kids-free meal with gorgeous seascapes, you have a brunch or dinner to remember.

Reservations are required and there's a dress code as well, please  refer to our Disney Cruise packing list for suggestions on what to wear.

Royal Court Royal Tea on Disney Wonder

Royal Court Royal Tea

Deck 3 at Lumiere's

Little princes or princesses (3 to 12) can join their favorite Disney characters for a tea party. While this tea party has an additional fee, it includes a chance to meet one-on-one with the princesses and take home a few royal gifts.

DISNEY MAGIC ENTERTAINMENT

Each night on the Disney Magic, a signature entertainment event will be hosted in the Walt Disney Theatre.

You'll be treated to performances that are legitimately Broadway-caliber. Other acts that are sometimes shown on stage include musicians, jugglers, ventriloquists, hypnotists, or comedians. Sometimes they show a feature movie – typically something Disney-owned that is new to theaters or is coming soon.

The Walt Disney Theatre is located on Deck 4 Forward.

Tangled the Musical on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Tangled: The Musical

Tangled  is the story of  Rapunzel's fairytale. The characters from the beloved animated film are portrayed by real-life actors on stage. If you know the movie, you'll get to sing along with the familiar songs.  This show is only shown on Disney Magic.

Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Twice Charmed: an Original Twist on the Cinderella Story

This musical serves as a sequel of sorts to the classic film Cinderella .  The premise is simple: what would have happened if Cinderella had never put on that glass slipper?

The stepsisters are back with the wicked stepmother, but there's a new bad guy in the mix: an evil Fairy Godfather.

Note: some sailings (like some Alaska) don't feature fireworks.

Disney Magic: Marvel Day at Sea

Marvel Day at Sea

On select 5-night cruises, Disney Magic hosts Marvel's heroes, like the Avengers and Spiderman. If your child loves Iron Man or Captain America, he or she will love meeting them in person.

Connected to the Concierge Lounge, you'll find a sundeck available only to Concierge level guests.

Perched above the Quiet Cove Pool, it's a quiet area for sunning and relaxing.

It offers expansive views of the ocean in virtually all directions, and if you want a soda or snack, just pop back into the Concierge Lounge.

Towels and sunscreen are provided.

OTHER ONBOARD SERVICES

Health center.

The clinic keeps regular daily hours to offer care for non-emergencies. If you have an emergency, the ship has a doctor and nurse on call 24/7.

Got a question or request? This is your place. I have found the crew that manages Guest Services to be very responsive and caring.

They can help you make spa appointments or dining reservations, plan your vacation by explaining activities, ship amenities, and the ship schedule.

Questions with your bill are handled here. You may also request a free crib or diaper genie here. Book these when you first arrive to make sure you get one.

Port Adventures Desk

Onboard sales desk.

Plan and book future Disney Cruises. Why would you book a Disney cruise while on a Disney cruise, you ask? You’d be surprised by how many people do!

It’s all about the perks. It’s pretty much the only way to get a Disney cruise for a discounted price.

Here’s the low down:

  • 10% discount on prevailing rates on your next cruise (concierge-level excluded)
  • Stateroom credit of $100 (3-6 nights) or $200 (7-night cruises or longer)
  • Reduced Deposit on 7-night sailings or longer

You don’t have to decide on a date while on the ship. Just put a $250 deposit down as a placeholder for a future cruise and sail within the next 24 months.

Disney Magic: A Complete Guide to What’s On Board

by Morgan Flaherty | Oct 27, 2023 | Disney Cruise Line , Disney Magic

Discover the staterooms, dining options, entertainment, and more that await cruisegoers sailing on the Disney Magic.

Planning to set sail on a cruise aboard the Disney Magic? The inaugural Disney Cruise Line ship will forever hold a special place in the history of the most magical cruise line for being the ship that started it all. On board, you’ll find stunning entertainment, fun characters, and fantastic dining to enjoy. We’re taking you through a full guide of everything you’ll find on the Disney Magic!

About the Disney Magic

  • Entertainment

DLR Magazine Annual Digital Subscription

Wdw magazine annual digital subscription, wdw magazine monthly digital subscription.

The Disney Magic was the inaugural Disney Cruise Line ship, making it a particularly special one in the fleet. The ship had its maiden voyage on July 30, 1998, sailing to Nassau, Bahamas with a stop at Castaway Cay. While the ship originally hosted weekly cruises through the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, it expanded over time to include sailings to the West Coast, and Europe as well.

The ship was designed with the inspiration of the historic RMS Queen Mary and can fit up to 2,713 passengers. The ship offers a variety of staterooms, including Inside Staterooms, and Outside Staterooms that offer guests a verandah to enjoy the view of the ocean.

The Disney Magic Stern features Goofy, shown painting the logo himself. Inside the ship you’ll find the exquisite entertainment and dining options the Disney Cruise Line has come to be known for. Along with fine dining like Palo and Lumiere’s, you can enjoy character dining with the Tangled-inspired Rapunzel’s Royal Table. In total, there are 11 decks  to explore on the Disney Magic, and we’re sharing a bit more of what you can find below!

Where Does the Disney Magic Sail?

For 2024 and 2025 sailings, the Disney Magic departs from ports at Port Canaveral in Florida, Galveston in Texas, New Orleans in Louisiana, San Diego in California, and San Juan in Puerto Rico. The ship sails to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Meixco, and the Panama Canal on various length trips, anywhere from three to seven nights.

Staterooms on the Disney Magic

In total, there are 875 staterooms on the Disney Magic, about two-thirds of what you’ll find on the newest ship, the Disney Wish. In total, there are 262 Inside Staterooms, and 613 Outside Staterooms (229 with an oceanview, and 384 with a verandah). There are also a variety of 22 suites onboard for a larger living space.

When it comes to choosing accommodations, you can choose from Concierge, which is the largest accommodation with a private verandah. Or, you can choose a non-concierge room with a private verandah, the second largest room available. There are also Oceanview rooms offering a porthole or two, as well as Inside Staterooms with no view outside.

Inside Staterooms

On the Disney Magic, you’ll have one inside stateroom option: a Standard Inside Stateroom . There is no exterior or ocean view to be found in these rooms, but they do sleep up to four adults in total. Your two options are:

  • Deluxe Inside Stateroom
  • Standard Inside Stateroom

The Deluxe Inside Stateroom has more square footage than the Standard Inside Stateroom , with 214 sq. ft. versus 184 sq. ft. Both types of rooms can sleep up to three or four, with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed available. The Deluxe Inside Stateroom also comes with a “split bath,” meaning there’s one bathroom with a vanity, sink, shower, and tub, then a half bathroom with a vanity, sink, and toilet. By comparison, the Standard Inside Stateroom offers one full bathroom with a vanity, sink, shower and tub.

Oceanview Staterooms

The Oceanview Staterooms offer a few of the sea from your room through one or two portholes. While these won’t have a deck for you to go outside, you will be able to enjoy some stunning views from a generously sized window overlooking the ocean. There’s just one option for this type of room:

  • Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom

The Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms come with either one large porthole window or two smaller porthole windows. Each room sleeps up to three or four, with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed available.

Verandah Staterooms

If you want to spend some time gazing at the beautiful ocean views, you’ll want to consider a room with a private verandah . There are two choices on board the Disney Magic:

  • Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah
  • Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah  has a queen bed, a single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed, meaning it sleeps three or four people. For a larger group, you’ll want the Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah , which sleeps up to five with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, wall pull-down bed, and upper berth pull-down bed. Both options come with their own private verandah.

Being a Princess is Exhausting – Mermaid Solid Color Tote

Being a princess is exhausting – mermaid watercolor tote, dlr castle by sunset art quality poster with hanger, issue 95 – once upon a time, concierge staterooms.

The Concierge rooms are the Disney Magic’s most luxurious accommodations. T here are four  types of concierge staterooms :

  • Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah
  • Concierge 2-Bedroom Suite with Verandah
  • Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite with Verandah
  • Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom

The Concierge Royal Suites have art deco décor, with two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, a dining salon, and more. They can sleep up to seven, making this ideal for larger families or groups. The 1-Bedroom Suite has a separate bedroom, 1.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, and a wet bar, and can sleep up to five. The 2-Bedroom Suite has two separate bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, and can sleep up to seven. Finally, the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom sleeps up to five and also comes with a private verandah.

Dining on the Disney Magic

Just like all of Disney Cruise Line’s ships, the Disney Magic comes with a variety of different dining options. Whether you are looking for a full meal, a character dining experience, or just a quick bite to eat, you’ll find it on board the ship.

Exclusive to the Disney Magic, Rapunzel’s Royal Table is a dining experience inspired by the beloved story of Disney’s “Tangled.” This dining experience features lively entertainment that transports Disney Magic guests to the kingdom of Corona for an evening of music, themed food offerings and interactive fun. (Matt Stroshane, photographer)

Like all other Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Magic offers rotational dining for dinners. This style of dining allows you to try each of the main restaurants onboard during your sailing, though you can choose to skip a night or two of rotational dining and secure a reservation at a different restaurant not included with your sailing instead (at an additional cost). Additionally, you can choose to order room service. Here’s a look at all of the dinner options on the Disney Magic :

  • Rapunzel’s Royal Table
  • Animator’s Palate
  • Palo Steakhouse (reservations required)
  • Royal Court Tea (reservations required)

Aside from rotational dining, you’ll also find casual dining onboard that does not require a reservation:

  • Duck-In Diner
  • Daisy’s De-Lites
  • Eye Scream Treats
  • Frozone Treats
  • Pinocchio’s Pizzeria

For adults, there are also four different bars and lounges available on the ship:

  • O’Gills Pub
  • Soul Cat Lounge

Entertainment on the Disney Magic

On every Disney Cruise Line sailing you’ll find plenty to do — and the Disney Magic is no exception! On the Magic you can enjoy Broadway-caliber theater performances, character meet and greets, and fun for the whole family. Here’s a preview of some of the different entertainment options you’ll find during your sailing:

  • D-Lounge offers singing, dancing, games, trivia, and more
  • Catch Tangled: The Musical inside the Walt Disney Theater
  • Watch Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story or Disney Dreams — An Enchanted Classic
  • Experience live entertainment at Fathoms, Keys, or Soul Cat Lounge

disney magic cruise characters

There’s certainly something MAGICAL about sailing with Disney Cruise Line …

disney magic cruise characters

That is true no matter which of the fleet’s five ships you board for your voyage. (BTW, and that fleet will grow to EIGHT with the upcoming additions of the Disney Treasure , the Disney Destiny , and the Disney Adventure !) Here, though, we’re exploring the one that started it all — the OG Disney Cruise Line ship. This is the Ultimate Guide to Cruising on the Disney Magic !

From bow to stern, let’s explore everything you and your traveling crew can experience and enjoy on Disney Cruise Line’s FIRST ship!

Disney Magic Overview

The Disney Magic took her Maiden Voyage with passengers on July 30, 1998, bringing Disney characters, Disney stories, and — of course! — Disney MAGIC to the seas!

disney magic cruise characters

The Magic was joined by her sister ship, the Disney Wonder , in August of 1999. Together, these two vessels are Disney Cruise Line’s Classic ships.

In size and structure (with 11 Decks and 875 Staterooms) as well as passenger capacity (2,713 passengers), the Magic is similar to the Disney Wonder. These two Classic ships are the smallest of the fleet. But that certainly doesn’t mean they’re lacking one ounce of fun and adventure!

A hallmark of a Disney Cruise Line ship is a statue of a beloved Disney character taking pride of place in the ship’s Atrium, welcoming guests aboard.

disney magic cruise characters

On the Magic, that character is none other than Helmsman Mickey!

Beyond the similarities mentioned above, the Wonder and the Magic each have distinguishing features all their own… and one of those is WHERE the ships sail.

Disney Magic Destinations

The Disney Magic currently offers itineraries with cruise lengths ranging from 3 to 10 nights.

From Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Magic offers Bahamian and Western Caribbean voyages. Select Bahamian sailings depart from Port Canaveral, as well.  It’s worth noting that, starting this summer, some of the Magic’s Bahamian cruises will visit Disney’s upcoming island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point !

disney magic cruise characters

Many of those same sailings will stop at Disney’s beloved Castaway Cay , too!

disney magic cruise characters

The Magic also sails out of Galveston, Texas to the Western Caribbean. And two sailings from San Juan will visit the Southern Caribbean. An Eastern Caribbean voyage will sail from San Juan, as well. A wonderfully lengthy 10-night sailing will depart from Port Canaveral to the Eastern Caribbean in the summer of 2025. (And, yes, I am JEALOUS of those sailing on it!)

In fact, Disney Cruise Line recently released its Summer 2025 itineraries, and you can check them out here !

Click HERE to see the Summer 2025 Disney Cruise Line itineraries!

Disney magic entertainment.

The entertainment that’s unique to Disney Cruise Line kicks off RIGHT AWAY as your cruise begins with Mickey’s Sail-A-Wave Party.

disney magic cruise characters

When I say “unique to Disney Cruise Line,” that’s because the pals joining you in the entertainment throughout the voyage are none other than Disney characters !

Select sailings also present Disney Cruise Line’s famous Pirate Night Deck Party complete with Fireworks at Sea!

disney magic cruise characters

You may also experience the Frozen Deck Party on select itineraries.

disney magic cruise characters

And although we don’t really want to talk about the end of your cruise just yet, it’s worth noting that the last night of your voyage features the ‘Til We Meet Again Party in the ship’s Atrium.

But when it comes to entertainment options, Disney Cruise Line may be best known for its Broadway-style productions — presented in the Walt Disney Theatre — that tie in characters, beloved stories, and treasured music from the Disney films.

disney magic cruise characters

Guests on the Disney Magic can enjoy three shows, including Tangled: The Musical.

disney magic cruise characters

This live retelling of Tangled presents characters from the film you know and love (including stunning puppetry that brings Maximus to life before your eyes), and sets that deliver the Snuggly Duckling Tavern right to you! You’ll also hear familiar tunes including “I See the Light.”

disney magic cruise characters

But there are also THREE new songs that were written for this stage production: “Flower of Gold,” “Wanted Man” and “When the Princess Returns.”

Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story is exactly that: a TWIST on the beloved tale of Cinderella which picks up the story beyond the “Happily Ever After” at the end of the classic animated film.

disney magic cruise characters

As the Disney Cruise Line website shares: “In this musical, the story revolves around the premise: What if Cinderella never got a chance to slip on the glass slipper, leaving those nasty stepsisters with another chance to get their claws into Prince Charming?”

While Tangled: The Musical and Twice Charmed each put the focus on a specific Disney Story, Disney Dreams — An Enchanted Classic brings together oodles and oodles of Disney stories, characters, and signature songs!

disney magic cruise characters

In Disney Dreams, which Disney shares is a “musical about the power of dreams and family,” you’ll see familiar friends from Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella , and Pinocchio . (Oh, and a certain fairy makes an appearance, too!)

P.S. You can pay a visit to Preludes before the show to pick up some popcorn (or perhaps a cocktail) to enjoy in the theatre!

Disney Magic Water Features

Looking for more family fun? There are LOTS of ways that passengers of all ages can MAKE A SPLASH on Deck 9 (and upwards!) of the Disney Magic.

disney magic cruise characters

Water areas for all ages include Goofy’s Pool and my personal favorite thing EVER, the Twist ‘n’ Spout water slide. (Why should kids get all the slides, huh? 😉 )

disney magic cruise characters

Speaking of slides, I have a confession to make: I have yet to brave the AquaDunk , which is exclusive to the Disney Magic! This enclosed body slide (which requires that passengers be at least 48 inches tall to ride) presents a true 3-story PLUNGE that even goes over the side of the ship!

disney magic cruise characters

I did, however, climb the stairs to the “launch” area on Deck 13 before I changed my mind, sooo …  PROGRESS! In all seriousness, this one is definitely for the thrill seekers out there, who are sure to have a blast!

Little ones have a splash space of their own with the Huey, Dewey, and Louie-themed AquaLab. This interactive play area is custom-made for sailors ages 3 and older , while the Nephew’s Splash Zone is dedicated to ages 3 and under .

For a more peaceful respite, the Quiet Cove Pool is reserved for guests over 18 years of age only. In addition to the pool (and its accompanying whirlpool spas), passengers in this exclusive area can visit Signals pool bar or sip on a specialty coffee or tea at the Cove Cafe .

Disney Magic Dining

Okay, now we’re REALLY talking… it’s time to chat about FOOD! The Disney Magic presents a wide array of options, starting with a Disney Cruise Line signature: Rotational Dining!

Rotational Dining means that guests have the chance to enjoy dinner at ALL THREE of the ships main dining rooms, each with their own theme and specialty menus on select nights. The best part is that, as you move to a different restaurant each evening, so do your servers! They “rotate” right along with you so they can get to know your group’s dining preferences.

disney magic cruise characters

The three Rotational Dining restaurants on the Disney Magic are Animator’s Palate, Lumiere’s and Rapunzel’s Royal Table.

Lumiere’s presents French cuisine for its specialty menu, served in a “Beauty and the Beast” -inspired setting… complete with roses that have dropped their petals intermingling with lighting on the ceiling.

disney magic cruise characters

Animator’s Palate is an innovative restaurant where the show is drawings coming to life on screens all around you. You may experience two different shows, depending on the length of your cruise.

disney magic cruise characters

Drawn to Magic is led by Sorcerer Mickey and displays the evolution of animation while guests dine on Pacific Island fusion cuisine. On 7-night and longer sailings, Animation Magic invites guests to draw their own characters and see them come alive in the restaurant.

disney magic cruise characters

Rapunzel’s Royal Table is exclusive to the Disney Magic, and not only is it a restaurant…

disney magic cruise characters

It’s also a Dinner Show on one evening of your voyage! When you dine at Rapunzel’s Royal Table, YOU are a guest at a banquet to celebrate Rapunzel’s birthday AND the anniversary of her return to the kingdom of Corona.

disney magic cruise characters

“Blondie” herself, along with Flynn Rider, and a few of the Snuggly Duckling Thugs make appearances and entertain you throughout your meal.

Be aware that, in addition to evening dinner, one or more of the Rotational Dining restaurants may be open to serve a table service breakfast or lunch.

A number of other options are available throughout the day, as well. Cabanas hosts a massive buffet for both breakfast and lunch. Help yourself!

disney magic cruise characters

Also on Deck 9, several Quick Service options serve classics like burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips and fries ( Duck-In Diner ), pizza ( Pinocchio’s Pizzeria ) and healthier fare like salads and sandwiches ( Daisy De-Lites ).

disney magic cruise characters

P.S. Don’t forget to follow up any and all of that with some soft-serve ice cream at Eye Scream Treats ! You can also stop by Frozone Treats to enjoy a cooling fruit smoothie for an extra charge.

Still hungry 😉 ? Well, we’ve got some great news: the majority of items available on the Room Service menu are INCLUDED with your Disney Cruise!

disney magic cruise characters

Even with all that, we’re not quite done with dining options just yet…

Disney Magic Adult Spaces

In addition to the Quiet Cove mentioned above, the Disney Magic also offers more areas reserved just for grown-ups. These include the fine dining restaurant, Palo , which may be booked for dinner for an additional charge per adult.

disney magic cruise characters

Additionally, the famous Palo Brunch is available for booking during sea days! This option is incredibly popular, so advance booking through your Disney Cruise Line account is recommended.

disney magic cruise characters

Be aware, as well, that Palo does have a dress code. The Disney Cruise Line website states: “ Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Also permitted is dress-casual attire with a polished look, such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts, dressy tops and lifestyle shoes. For brunch at Palo and Palo Steakhouse, dress shorts are acceptable. Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted.”

There is also the After Hours district, featuring three lounges for adults.

disney magic cruise characters

These are O’Gills Pub (an Irish pub-meets-sports-bar), Keys (piano bar), and Fathoms which, in addition to bar service also presents adult entertainment such as comedians, karaoke, and dancing for late-night options.

And the new Soul Cat Lounge brings a New York City jazz lounge to the high seas!

disney magic cruise characters

This Soul -inspired spot presents live music and offers a full bar that “serves up Manhattans, martinis and other Empire City-inspired craft cocktails.”

Adults might also opt to participate in a Mixology Class or  Beverage Tasting Seminar ! Featured liqueur and cocktail options include — but aren’t limited to — rum, tequila and margaritas, whiskey, champagne tastings, and more.

disney magic cruise characters

These fun opportunities are offered for an additional fee, and advance booking is highly recommended.  (Seriously… these seminars are POPULAR!)

The Senses Spa & Salon offers a wide array of services and treatments. (And the Rainforest Room provides an especially relaxing oasis!) Select experiences are available for pre-booking, and you can stop by Senses to inquire about prices for the Rainforest Room and other treatments during your cruise. And the adjacent Fitness Center offers workout machines and classes.

And though this is not limited to adults, keep in mind that if you’d like to get a jog or two in, Deck 4 hosts a walking track!

Disney Magic Kids Clubs and Experiences

Now let’s turn our attention to areas on the ship dedicated to children, offering experiences tailored for ages from infants to teens!

Deck 5 is home to the It’s a Small World Nursery for ages 6 months to 3 years old .

The same deck also hosts Disney’s Oceaneer Club AND Disney’s Oceaneer Lab for ages 3 to 10 . What’s the difference between the two?

disney magic cruise characters

Well, the Oceaneer Lab presents opportunities for learning fun, the Oceaneer Club features activities such as character experiences, story time, and play areas. (There are also specific guided activities for the littlest ones, ages 3 and 4.)

On the Magic, the Oceaneer Club features the following playful spaces: Andy’s Room (that’s Andy from Toy Story ), Marvel Super Hero Academy, Disney Junior, and Pixie Hollow.

disney magic cruise characters

The Oceaneer Lab , meanwhile, presents the following play spaces: Animator’s Studio, Captain’s Workshop, Craft Studio, and The Wheelhouse (for “captains in training”)!

The spaces are connected so kids can enjoy all of the areas, and Youth Activities counselors are present at all times. Parents will want to know that spaces for your child can be pre-registered via your Disney Cruise Line account, and registration may also take place onboard the ship.

Tweens (ages 11 to 14) can gather at the Edge on Deck 9 to hang out, watch movies, play games and make friends during group activities with fun Disney counselors and more!

disney magic cruise characters

Vibe  offers cruisers ages 14 to 17 similar activities geared to their age group, or simply a place to chill. And you want to know something really cool?

disney magic cruise characters

Vibe is located in the ship’s Forward Funnel!

We’ve got one more thing to mention, though it’s not a club, per se. For an extra fee, your little Prince or Princess age 3 to 12 can get a makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique ! Disney Princess, knight, and sea captain-themed packages are available… and there’s an exclusive makeover for Pirate Party Nights!

Disney Magic Activities

Okay, now we’ve all spent some time with our own age groups. How about getting the whole gang back together for some fun? The Magic has got the family covered. D Lounge is the place to be for fun events like family game shows and trivia, dance parties and more!

disney magic cruise characters

Catch a movie on the big screen at the Buena Vista Theatre ! You might choose to watch a Disney animated classic, or maybe a Star Wars or Marvel flick. You never know… your sailing just might feature a first-run Disney feature film at sea! ( “Funnel Vision” on the pool deck shows movies on the big screen, too!)

You can find basketball courts and ping-pong tables on the Wide World of Sports Deck . But don’t look for shuffleboard here… that’s on Deck 4. 😉

Let’s see… it feels like I’m forgetting something… OH, YEAH! You can meet, hug, get autographs from and pose for pictures with your favorite DISNEY PALS !

disney magic cruise characters

Sailing with you are the Fab Five (that’s Mickey and the gang), Disney Princesses, friends from Frozen , and more! Be aware that, while all Character Greetings are included with your cruise, select Greeting times (such as Princess Gatherings) may require advance booking.

Disney Magic Staterooms

The Disney Magic offers four categories of staterooms: Inside, Oceanview, Verandah, and Concierge . Many of the rooms feature Disney’s innovative split bathroom which allows more guests in a cabin the chance to get ready at one time.

disney magic cruise characters

While each category boasts amenities such as premium mattresses and linens, a 22″ LCD flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, and a surprising amount of storage space, there are many more details to explore among the varying categories, so we’ve dedicated a page to those options here .

Disney Cruise Line Characters- How to Find Disney Characters on Your Cruise

Disney Alaska characters

Meeting Disney characters on a Disney Cruise is one of the most anticipated experiences for families. Each Disney Cruise Line experience will include multiple meet and greet options whether it is Disney classics like Mickey and Minnie Mouse to Disney Princesses with some cruises including a special character focus like Marvel characters.

Disney Cruise Line offers nonstop character meet and greets during their cruises with times that last all day. Guests can even get the chance to reserve free meet and greet options with Disney characters or opt for special paid experiences with Disney characters.

During my recent Disney Cruise, I had the chance to meet plenty of Disney characters and most of the time we just happened upon them at random! Disney character meet and greets are extremely popular on Disney Cruises and I was surprised to see the high demand for these characters as a frequent Disney Park goer. Keep reading for the full overview of all the Disney characters you can find on Disney Cruise Lines including tips on avoiding long wait times.

You can view the currently available dates for Disney Cruises in 2024 and 2025 along with full itineraries. After viewing the dates be sure to come back and request a FREE quote from our travel partner for your cruise .  For a limited time Mickey Visit readers get up to a $400 onboard credit.

Disney Cruise Line Character Tips

Disney Cruise Line character experiences are extremely popular. I am a frequent Disney Park visitor so I have met most of these characters at the park so perhaps the demand wasn't necessarily there for me but I was surprised to see the popularity of these experience!

Lines for character meet and greets were often extremely long and were often cut off quickly if the character's time was limited. Sometimes the characters were only available for 15 minutes at a time and if you weren't at the front of the line, you might miss out.

Based on my experiences navigating a sold out Marvel Day at Sea cruise, here's my tips on navigating Disney Cruise Line character experiences.

  • Check the  Disney Cruise Line  app and make note of the times of character appearances. If you showed up earlier to meet characters, you may have a shot at meeting them especially if they were limited to a shorter time frame.
  • Check the  location  of the Disney character greetings. If you position yourself just right, you could end up being first in line especially if the character is meeting on the Atrium balcony and all the other guests are still on the main Atrium floor.
  • Go to the open houses  for the kids clubs. Sometimes the open houses for The Vibe and the Oceaneer Clubs will include character greetings. This how we ended up meeting Chip n Dale on Pirate Night with no wait.
  • Book a ticketed character time  when they become available before your trip. This is especially important if your group cares about meeting Disney Princesses. These lines are often the longest and this is a good way to meet many of them with no wait.
  • Be prepared to jump in line  when characters first appear. I happened to meet Jack Sparrow and Rapunzel with a minimal wait just because we happened upon their line when they first arrived. Don't hesitate and get in line!
  • Prepare your kids if  lines are long since character attendants will often cut the line short if the character doesn't have enough time to meet everyone. Prepare your kids for this reality and have a back up plan ready.
  • Bring an  autograph book  or other souvenir for characters to autograph. I saw so many great ideas for this on our cruise that I rarely see in the parks like kids with small backpacks or photo mates for frames. On Marvel Day at Sea, I saw many kids with Captain America shields and Thor Hammers being signed. Such a cool keepsake! These are good items to add to your Disney Cruise packing list.

Now let's get into all the possible options for characters on your Disney Cruise!

Disney Cruise Line Characters

Disney Characters you may see during your cruise include:

  • Mickey Mouse
  • Minnie Mouse
  • Donald Duck
  • Chip ‘n Dale
  • Doc McStuffins
  • Sofia the First
  • Princess Anna

You will also see these characters in a variety of outfits. Some of the most popular meet and greets with Mickey and Minnie Mouse is when they're in their cruising outfits! On the Alaska Disney Cruise , you can meet Mickey and Minnie in their “Alaskan” best which is a fun opportunity.

Mickey Mouse in Alaska

Nearly all Disney Cruises start off the day with a sail away party that will feature characters to jump start the cruise. There are Disney characters all over the ship to see!

Disney Cruise sail away party

If your cruise includes a stop at Castaway Cay , there will also be chances to meet characters on the island!

Other character meet and greet options include the final farewell party that takes place the last night of your cruise.  This party is held in the Atrium Lobby and is a last moment to get some last minute character meet and greets in before the cruise comes to an end.

Olaf Disney Cruise character

Guests also have the chance to see characters during many different live performances depending on your cruise. Disney characters are integrated throughout the entire experience whether it is part of live entertainment or character greetings!

Pirate Night Characters

Nearly all Disney Cruises include a Pirate Night which is a celebration of all things pirate that ends with fireworks on the top deck. You will see some pirate themed characters out and about on pirate night including the popular Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean!

Chip n Dale Pirate Night

You might also see classic Disney characters dressed up in their pirate gear roaming around the ship. We stumbled upon Chip n Dale in their Pirate Night gear during The Vibe Club (club for teens) open house.

Marvel Day at Sea Characters

Marvel Day at Sea will feature an abundance of Marvel characters available throughout your day at sea. If you pick a cruise with a Marvel Day at Sea, you can expect to see lots of Marvel characters including many families in their own themed Marvel attire!

Daisy Duck posing on Disney Dream

One great idea we saw many families utilize during Marvel Day at Sea was to come prepared with a Captain American shield or other notable Marvel item and have all the characters sign it. You will also see classic characters dressed in Marvel themed outfits. These will be extremely popular meet and greets!

Hawkeye Black Widow on Disney Cruise

Marvel Day at Sea meet and greet characters can include:

  • Black Panther
  • Shuri from  Black Panther
  • Captain Marvel
  • Captain America (Sam Wilson)
  • Captain America (Steve Rogers)
  • Okoye from  Black Panther
  • Star-Lord and Gamora from  Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Black Widow
  • Kate Bishop from  Hawkeye
  • Mighty Thor
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp

These character meet and greets varied from designated line up spots to characters that just roamed the ship.

How to Meet Disney Cruise Characters

All the Disney Character meet and greet times will be listed on the Disney Cruise Line app . You will typically have four main locations to meet Disney Cruise Line characters and this is true for ALL the Disney ships:

  • Lobby Atrium
  • Disney's Oceaneer Lab
  • Disney's Oceaneer Club

On the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy , additional character greetings are available in Donald's Pool Area.

On the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder , additional character greeting are available on Deck 4, Midship, Deck 4, Balcony, and Goofy’s Pool Stage.

There are also the option of ticketed meet and greets at NO additional cost that can be reserved prior to your cruise and on day one once you board the ship. There are also paid opportunities to meet characters on select ships.

Disney Cruise Line Ticketed Character Meetings

Disney Cruise Line also features a variety of ticketed character meet and greets. These ticketed events require all guests to have a valid ticket reservation to attend and this is a great way to meet a variety of characters with a minimal wait time!

To reserve tickets before your cruise begins, visit  My Cruise Activities  within your advance booking window. When reserving tickets, if a specific time is unavailable, try selecting another time and/or day. In addition to booking online, a limited number of tickets may be available on the first day of your cruise. Please check with Guest Services once on board the ship to determine if there is availability.

Children under 8 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend.

These ticketed reservations are FREE and are limited in availability. These go quickly so be sure to sign on when you can book to try and reserve a spot! This is the best and easiest way to meet a variety of characters at once with minimal wait.

Princess Gathering- All Disney Cruises

Princess Gathering is available on all Disney Cruises and feature meet and greets with Disney Princesses. This is the BEST way to meet all the Disney Princesses with a far shorter wait time.

Guests may attend each ticketed event once per cruise. Disney Princesses available during this meeting will vary per cruise although past appearances have included Belle, Aurora, Rapunzel, Tiana, Ariel, Cinderella and Snow White.

Heroic Encounters- Marvel Day at Sea

Thor Disney Cruise

Marvel Day at Sea features the Disney Cruise Line assigned meet and greet- Heroic Encounters. This meet and greet offers the chance to meet Marvel Super Heroes from New York City — such as Iron Man, Spider-Man and Black Panther — and Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guests may attend every ticketed Character event—including the Heroic Encounters – Mission: New York and the Heroic Encounter – Groot —once per cruise.

Disney Cruise Paid Character Experiences

There is also the option for two paid character experiences depending on which cruise ship you sail on. These experiences are both tailored towards Disney Princesses and the Frozen film. Despite the high cost of these experiences, these sell out immediately on most cruises!

Royal Court Royal Tea

Royal Court Royal Tea is a “magical tea party” that includes visits from popular Disney Princesses. This event is available for additional fee and is NOT included in the cost of your cruise.

Disney Princesses will visit guests during this Royal Tea and this experience also includes storytelling, singing, and dancing.

Due to the popularity of this event, it’s best to reserve tickets online at  My Cruise Activities within your advance booking window once your cruise is paid in full. This is a luxury experience with a cost of $220 per child ages 3 to 12 and $69 per adult.

This experience is available on the Disney Magic , Disney Wonder , Disney Fantasy , and Disney Dream .

Olaf's Royal Picnic

Olaf's Royal Picnic features Olaf, Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and more in a delightful afternoon of treats, merriment and summertime melodies. This event is available for additional fee and is NOT included in the cost of your cruise.

Due to the popularity of this event, it’s best to reserve tickets online within your advance booking window at My Cruise Activities once your cruise is paid in full. This is a luxury experience with a cost of $220 per child ages 3 to 12 and $69 per adult.

Disney Magic - Tour and Profile

Cruising with Mickey and All the Disney Characters

disney magic cruise characters

The Disney Magic is an excellent mixture of classic ocean liner beauty and Disney whimsy. She is an exceptional choice for family cruising, but provides enough space, entertainment, and activities to draw couples and adults traveling without kids. Disney Cruise Line excels at organization, attention to details, and entertainment, and these three elements are key to a successful cruise experience. Add the characters and the small Disney touches such as the "When You Wish Upon a Star" horn, Mickey's voice on the wake-up call, and the hidden Mickey heads woven in to the decor, and it's a fun cruise for everyone of all ages.

Let's tour the Disney Magic.

A Look at the Outside of the Disney Magic

The Disney Magic was launched in 1998 and has a classic ocean liner look on the outside, with a black hull, shining white top, and two red funnels, both adorned with Mickey heads. There's no doubt which cruise line this ship belongs to! The ship was re-imagined (significantly renovated) in 2013, and some great new features were added. Fans of this magical ship shouldn't worry, most of the great existing features were kept. Most modern ships only have one funnel, and this one is no different--one of the two funnels is a dummy and houses the Vibe teen center. Keeping with the Mickey theme, the life boats are yellow (rather than the standard orange), making the overall look very Disney--black, white, red, and yellow. A glance at the bow will make anyone smile. The bow has intricate gold scroll-work much like classic tall ships of long ago. Mixed in with this elegant detail is Goofy, dangling from a rope and touching up the paint.

Disney Magic - Interior Common Areas

Much of the interior of the Disney Magic is done in Art Deco style, and the ship artwork includes many special Disney theme pieces. Exploring the ship is like a treasure hunt, as you will find yourself looking for the Mickey logo, which is creatively woven into the decor. My favorite common areas of the ship were the soaring three-story lobby and the large Walt Disney Theatre. The lobby is the hub of the ship and features a wonderful bronze statue of Mickey Mouse at the helm. Topping off the lobby is a huge, crystal chandelier. The theatre seats 977 and has some of the best shows I've seen at sea. Each production show tells a story and is like a short operetta, filled with singers, dancers, and (of course) Disney characters.

Disney Magic - Kids' Programs and Youth Clubs

Touring the youth clubs and learning about all the activities designed for kids on the Disney Magic made me want to be under 18 again!

Click on the links below to learn more about each of the age-specific areas.

The Disney Magic youth clubs are:

  • It's a Small World Nursery - 6 months to 3 years (1 year minimum on some longer cruises)
  • Oceaneer Club - Pixie Hollow - 3 to 12 years old
  • Oceaneer Club - Andy's Room - 3 to 12 years old
  • Oceaneer Club - Mickey Mouse Club Room - 3 to 12 years old
  • Oceaneer Club - MARVEL's Avenger Academy - 3 to 12 years old
  • Oceaneer Lab - 3 to 12 years old
  • Edge Tween Club - 11 to 14 years old
  • Vibe Teen Club - 14 to 17 years old

Disney Magic - Exterior Common Areas

Many of the activities on the Disney Magic are centered on the out of doors, starting with the high energy sailaway party and continuing each day around the swimming pools. The ship has three pools, one for adults, the second for families, and the third just for kids. Each pool has attractive features such as the mega-movie screen or the Mickey slide, making them the center of daily life onboard for many guests.

A new exhilarating water slide was added to the Disney Magic when the ship was re-imagined. Dubbed the AquaDunk, this is a thrilling experience that only lasts 7 (very memorable) seconds. It's nothing like the AquaDuck found on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Evening events are also held on the pool deck, the highlight of which is the "Pirates In the Caribbean" party. This party starts with a pirate theme dinner and then moves outside for music, dancing, and fireworks. It's a spectacular ending to a fun-filled night onboard the Disney Magic.

Disney Magic - Dining and Cuisine

The Disney Magic has three main dining rooms--Lumiere's, Carioca's, and Animator's Palate, and guests rotate among the three rooms during the cruise, always sitting at the same table number and with the same dinner companions. The wait staff also rotates, providing continuity to the dining experience. It's a great idea and works well. Although these three dining rooms are good, the highlight of dining on the Disney Magic is a dinner or brunch at Palo's, the adults-only alternative restaurant. Palo's sits on the top deck and has wonderful views, exceptional service, and marvelous food. It even has a private room with a large dining table for adult parties. For families looking for casual fare, the Disney Magic has colorful Cabana's with indoor and outdoor seating, along with several take-away food outlets near the pools.

Disney Magic - Cabins and Accommodations

The Disney Magic carries 2700 passengers in 875 cabins, many of which can sleep 4. Of the 720 outside cabins, 388 have private verandas, perfect for some quiet time to enjoy the warm Caribbean weather. The cabins are brightly colored, with plenty of storage space and practicality. I loved the shelves in a vertically-place steamer trunk used as a storage cabinet. The bath is split into two rooms, one with a sink and toilet and the other with a sink and shower tub. Each bath is tiny, but it is nice to have two separate rooms and two sinks when traveling as a family group. The room steward was efficient and friendly, and kept the cabin clean. He also left us chocolates and towel animal creations each evening to top off the entertainment.

Disney Magic - Lounges and Bars

Although a Disney Magic cruise is centered on families, the cruise line hasn't forgotten how important it is for adults to have private time when on vacation. This factor is very evident on the Disney Magic, with several adult lounges, three of which are grouped together in the After Hours district on deck 3. My favorite was the quiet Keys, with live piano music in the evenings and those marvelous large portholes for ocean viewing. Sports enthusiasts love watching ESPN in the O'Gill's Pub sports bar, and the Fathoms night club provides adult entertainment in the late evenings. These lounges are also used for adult-oriented activities, such as wine tastings, which were among the most well-run and interesting I've ever been to on any ship.

Disney Magic - Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean Cruise Overview

I cruised the Disney Magic to the eastern Caribbean from Port Canaveral on a seven-day itinerary that included two delightful sea days followed by two ports of call in the U.S. Virgin Islands -- St. Croix and St. Thomas. While on St. Thomas, I did a half-day shore excursion to the nearby island of St. John. We then had a final day at sea before spending the day at Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay. Although many cruise lines have private islands in the Caribbean, Castaway Cay is one of the best. This cruise itinerary was a great mix of time at sea and time in port. With so many onboard activities for children, families, and adults, I'm glad we had three sea days to enjoy the Disney experience.

In January 2014, I did a three-night cruise on the Disney Magic from Port Canaveral to Nassau and  Castaway Cay. Although this was a too-short cruise, we still enjoyed many of the activities (like fireworks and Pirates in the Caribbean) featured on the longer Disney cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Disney Magic European Cruise Overview

The Disney Magic is a delightful way for families or adults to see parts of Europe. The ship sails the Mediterranean roundtrip from Barcelona , and the Disney Magic also sails northern Europe roundtrip from Copenhagen  or London. Fans of "Frozen" get a chance to visit Norway on the London itineraries.

This detailed travel log of a Disney Magic western Mediterranean cruise provides an overview of the ports of call along with some of the special Disney port adventures for families.

Disney offers a terrific Adventures by Disney Short Escape as a pre-cruise option in Barcelona. This three-night adventure provides an excellent look at this marvelous Catalonian city.

Disney Magic - Summary and Wrap-up

I'll be the first to admit that the Disney Magic far exceeded my expectations. I knew the ship was an excellent choice for families, but never dreamed it would be so much fun for adults traveling without kids. The highlights were the exceptional organization, the amazing Disney entertainment, dining at Palo's, and watching the faces of the children as they interacted with the Disney characters. Of course, we got our photo made with Mickey, too!

Character Dining on Disney Cruises: A Guide

If you’re planning a Disney Cruise with your family, one of the highlights will undoubtedly be character dining experiences. These unique character meals offer something for everyone, whether it’s meeting your favorite Disney princesses or participating in exciting rotational dining shows with characters. This guide will explore the different facets of character dining on Disney Cruises.

What are Character Meals on Disney Cruises? An Overview

Disney cruises are renowned for their magical character dining events, where the enchantment of Disney is served right at your table. Whether it’s the sparkle in a child’s eyes when they see their favorite princess or the excitement of a Frozen-themed feast, these experiences are thrilling for kids and adults alike.

Character Dining on Disney Cruises - Wandering Oaken leads a toast

It’s important to note that many character dining experiences on Disney cruise ships are more show-based , contrasting with the one-on-one interactions at places like Chef Mickey’s or Cinderella’s Royal Table in the Disney theme parks . So, those expecting a traditional park-style dining encounter might find the shipboard experience slightly different (or even underwhelming). If one-on-one character time is important to you, be sure to select one of the experiences that specifically offers that.

Here’s a rundown of the character meals:

  • Special Character Dining Events: Disney Cruise Line hosts dining with princesses and Frozen characters, with photos and interactions. Magical décor and kid-friendly menus provide an immersive experience. Reservations are required, and these are not included in the fare.
  • Rotational Dining Shows with Characters: These dinner shows transform mealtime into a spectacle. Draw a character that later dances with Disney icons or indulge in Frozen-themed fun. Animator’s Palate is a prime example, offering an innovative twist on character engagement. These character dinners are included with your fare.
  • Disney Character Breakfasts (Limited) : These breakfasts, once a cherished tradition on 7-night and longer voyages, have been discontinued since the COVID pandemic . However, there is an offering that is almost like a traditional Disney character breakfast on sailings which feature a PIXAR Day at Sea . And Disney Cruise Line still offers various other character experiences throughout the ship.

Whether it’s lunch with Elsa or a dinner show with Mickey, Disney Cruise Line’s character dining caters to everyone’s taste.

Although it was expensive, Ava found it well worth it!

Our Review : Olaf’s Royal Picnic was a hit with our friend Zach’s daughter, who is an Olaf fan. The indoor summertime meadow setting, lively character interactions, and delightful menu impressed both the Samantha and Zach. The thoughtfully curated gifts added a special touch! In Zach’s opinion, it was well worth the price – the unforgettable memories and joys shared are well worth the money.

Our Review : Jaimie and I were impressed by the innovative technology and engaging Marvel-themed adventure. It felt like we were part of a Marvel movie, assisting Ant-Man and The Wasp to avert a crisis. Ben, being a Marvel fan, found this dining experience thoroughly entertaining. The food was good, and the décor was impressive, though not as magical as Arendelle. Ava found the experience fun but was not as engaged as she was at the Frozen-themed restaurant.

  • A Joyous Celebration : Enter the kingdom of Corona for a joyous celebration of Rapunzel’s birthday. The royal ballroom’s glowing wish lanterns and colorful drawings set the stage for live entertainment, including singing, dancing, and appearances by Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, and the mischievous Snuggly Duckling Thugs.
  • Interactive Experience : The dinner event includes a song-and-dance and brief table visits by the characters, making you feel part of the story. The spirited parade capping off the night ensures an engaging and festive experience for all.

Our Review : Rapunzel’s Royal Table was a dream come true for our daughter Ava, who adores Rapunzel. The characters stayed in their roles perfectly, adding to the magic. My wife and I appreciated the superb service and elegance of the event. Though the food was good, it was secondary to the immersive experience. Between the visual wonders, lively entertainment, and regal setting, the night was filled with fairy tale magic, making it an essential part of our Disney cruise.

7. Tiana’s Place

Performers in brightly-colored Mardi Gras costumes at Tiana's Place on the Disney Wonder cruise ship

For those seeking a joyous and lively celebration of southern charm, Tiana’s Place offers an unforgettable experience, complete with live jazz and iconic storytelling.

  • Location : Disney Wonder
  • Bounty from the Bayou : Savor Creole and Cajun cuisine like New Orleans Seafood Pepper Pot, Cajun-spiced sea bass, and delightful desserts like Tiana’s Buttermilk Beignets and New Orleans Banana Foster Sundae.
  • A Swinging Supper Club : Step into a festive New Orleans-style family gala with toe-tapping live jazz that brings The Princess and the Frog to life. Experience genteel southern charm in a vivid, brightly lit restaurant where they celebrate Mardi Gras nightly.
  • Character Engagement : Tiana’s Place on Disney Wonder has appearances by Tiana and Louis (the trumpeting alligator). We briefly said hello to Tiana at the entrance, but I don’t recall much at-the-table interaction during the dinner.

Our Review : Jaimie and I were transported into the enchanting world of New Orleans at Tiana’s Place. The jazzy atmosphere and playful interactions with Tiana and Prince Naveen made for a lively evening. We delighted in the flavorful Cajun dishes, and the Buttermilk Beignets were a standout dessert that we both loved. The blend of live music, storytelling, and southern charm created a festive and unique dining experience. We can’t wait to share this magical experience with our kids in the future!

8. Hey Howdy Breakfast with Woody and Friends (On Hiatus)

For Pixar enthusiasts eager to join the fun, the Hey Howdy Breakfast offers a thrilling experience with Woody and his friends.

  • Location : Animator’s Palate — offered only on cruises featuring a PIXAR Day at Sea. Note that there are currently no scheduled PIXAR Day at Sea sailings for the remainder of 2024 or 2025.
  • Cost : Included in your cruise fare, but reservations are required
  • A Special Not-Quite-A-Character-Breakfast Dining Event : Though character breakfasts on Disney Cruise Line have been discontinued, this new experience brings Woody, Jessie, and Bullseye to life in a unique way. Savor a breakfast feast while enjoying an interactive show from the stage. No face-to-face meetings are required (or offered), though the characters may pass relatively close by your table during the meal. It’s important to note that Disney is very careful not to call this a “character breakfast,” so don’t expect the same type of one-on-one attention you might get at, say, Chef Mickey’s.
  • Live Entertainment Extravaganza : The Hey Howdy Breakfast is more than a meal. Woody appears on stage with his pals to sing, dance, and interact with guests from “on stage.” This creates a lively, engaging atmosphere that goes beyond the typical dining experience.
  • Reservations : Must reserve in advance; no walk-ups.

Our Review : We haven’t had the opportunity to try the Hey Howdy Breakfast with Woody and Friends yet, but the idea of breakfast with some of Pixar’s most beloved characters sounds like fun! The blend of delicious food and innovative, interactive entertainment offers a unique twist on the traditional character meal, and it’s on our list for the next Disney Fantasy cruise.

Disney Character Dining: Pros and Cons

  • Unique Interactions : Enjoy memorable and sometimes personal interactions with your favorite Disney characters.
  • Extended Time with Characters : Dinner shows provide more time to see characters compared to brief meet-and-greets.
  • Smart Use of Time : Seeing characters during meals at restaurants lets you “multitask,” freeing up more leisure time on the rest of your cruise.
  • Engaging Storytelling : Experience the fun and engaging Disney storytelling during your meal.
  • Themed Menus : Savor delicious meals inspired by the characters’ worlds, adding to the immersion.
  • Family Fun : An entertaining and joyous activity for the whole family to enjoy together.
  • Included in Cruise Fare : Most character dining experiences are part of the standard dining schedule and included in your Disney cruise fare , meaning no additional cost.
  • Additional Costs for Some Events : Select character dining experiences require an additional payment on top of your cruise fare.
  • Fixed Dining Times : The scheduled dining times might not align with everyone’s preferences or needs.
  • Potential Distraction for Children : The excitement of character interactions might distract some children from eating their meals.
  • Possibly Loud and Busy : Depending on the event, the environment can be a bit loud and bustling, which might not suit all guests.

Tips for Disney Character Meals

  • Know the Schedule : Familiarize yourself with the dining times and character appearances to plan your day accordingly.
  • Bring a Camera : Don’t forget to capture the memories with photographs. Many dining experiences also have official photographers on hand.
  • Consider Dietary Restrictions : If anyone in your party has dietary restrictions, make sure to notify the cruise line or your travel agent in advance.
  • Prepare Your Children : If your kids are shy or apprehensive around characters, prepare them beforehand so they know what to expect.
  • Understand the Costs : Determine what’s included in your cruise fare and what might require additional payment to avoid surprises.
  • Manage Expectations : Explain how the character dining works to your kids so they know what to expect (i.e., sometimes there is no meet-and-greet).
  • Enjoy the Experience : Engage with the characters, participate in the activities, and immerse yourself in the experience. This total participation will make it fun for everyone!

Will Disney Character Breakfasts Return to the Ships?

Disney Cruise Line’s character breakfasts were discontinued during the COVID pandemic and have not returned. There is a possibility that this beloved experience may make a complete return to Disney Cruise Line in the future. The appearance of the Hey Howdy Breakfast with Woody and Friends — which is almost a character breakfast — is certainly a positive sign.

Meeting Disney Characters on Disney Cruises (Outside of Dining)

Apart from character dining experiences, you can meet and greet your favorite characters at common areas, special gatherings, and themed cruises. Character appearances vary by sailing, so consult your schedule to enjoy these magical opportunities!

Is Character Dining Worth It on Disney Cruise Line?

Character dining on Disney Cruises offers both included experiences and paid events with beloved Disney characters. Whether it’s worth it depends on your family’s preferences, budget, and the ages and interests of your children .

The included character dining is a definite Disney must, providing unique interactions and immersive storytelling.

The paid events, although expensive, can be amazing experiences for youngsters who adore the characters involved.

Consult with a Disney travel agent for questions or assistance in deciding or booking your VIP character dining experiences.

History [ ]

The Disney Magic began operation July 30 , 1998 . The Disney Wonder began operation August 15 , 1999 . The Disney Dream began operation January 26 , 2011 , and its most recent ship, the Disney Fantasy , was launched on March 31 , 2012 . The ships each contain 875 staterooms [1] and are almost identical in their design, with a few variations in restaurants and entertainment venues. Both contain areas designed exclusively for various age groups, including toddlers, young children, teens, and adults.

They are the first in the industry to be designed and built from the keel up as family cruise liners, with the goal of accommodating parents and children. Unlike most ships of their type, they do not include casinos, to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere. In October 2006 , additional family amenities were added to the Disney Wonder including features specifically geared toward toddlers, making the ship even more suitable for families with younger children.

Disney Cruise Line was created in 1995 when the company commissioned its two ships at Fincantieri in Italy, ending an arrangement with Premier Cruises for the maritime segment of its vacation packages.

Disney Magic [ ]

Built in 1998 by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, the Disney Magic can hold approximately 2,400 guests. It currently sails on 7-day itineraries including Disney's private island Castaway Cay, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Tortola, Key West, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel (depending on specific cruise).

In June 2005 , the Disney Magic was dispatched to the West Coast in honor of Disneyland 's 50th Anniversary . The Disney Magic made a transatlantic crossing in May 2007 to sail around the Mediterranean, visiting ports including Barcelona, Cadiz, and Gibraltar.

Beginning May 25 , 2008 , the Disney Magic sailed 12 consecutive seven-night cruise vacations from the Port of Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta. Disney Cruise Line offered two 15-night repositioning cruises, sailing from Port Canaveral through the Panama Canal, departing May 10, 2008, with the return sailing to Florida on August 17, 2008 .

The Disney Magic entered scheduled 10-day drydock refurbishment on October 1 , 2005 at the Norshipco shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia. Several enhancements took place during this time. The Vista Spa and Salon received a 1,700-square foot expansion including three new spa treatment suites. Three conference rooms on deck 2 were transformed into an additional children's area called Ocean Quest. A 24-by-14 foot LED screen was affixed to the forward funnel in the family swimming pool area where movies and major sporting and broadcast events are shown. Since 2011 , the ship has been based out of Long Beach, California and Vancouver, British Columbia for cruises to the Mexican Rivera and Alaska.

Disney Wonder [ ]

The Disney Wonder is the second cruise ship operated by Disney Cruise Line.

The Disney Wonder alternates between 3 and 4-night cruises. Visiting Nassau and Disney's own private island Castaway Cay, with the 4-night cruise offering an additional day at sea.

In October 2006 , the Wonder went into dry dock for a general sprucing up and the addition of new features, many of which were introduced to the Disney Magic in 2005 .

A toddler pool was added that features interactive fountains and splash zones. A new computer simulator was put into the refurbished Oceaneer Lab that lets kids "steer" Disney Wonder in and out of port. A 24 x 14 ft. LED screen affixed to the forward funnel and overlooking the Goofy Pool offers Disney movies and television programs. The Vista Spa, as well as the meeting and conference facilities and the Quiet Cove adults-only pool, were renovated and expanded too. Beginning in 2011 , Disney Wonder will be based in Barcalona , Spain for European trips.

Disney Dream [ ]

The Disney Dream is the third cruise ship operated by Disney Cruise Line, part of The Walt Disney Company, which entered service in 2011 . Dream currently sails 3, 4, and 5-day itineraries to The Bahamas and Castaway Cay. The Captain of Disney Dream is Tom Forberg; her godmother is Jennifer Hudson.

The Disney Dream is 40% larger than its two older fleet-mates, the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder , with a design gross tonnage (GT) of 128,000 tons, a length of 330 meters, and a width of 37 meters. The Disney Dream carries 4,000 passengers and 1,458 crew.

Like other Disney vessels, Disney Dream's horn plays songs from Disney movies and parks, specifically: " When You Wish Upon a Star " ( Pinocchio ), " A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes " (Cinderella) , " Be Our Guest " ( Beauty and the Beast ), " Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me) " ( Pirates of the Caribbean ), " Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (An Actor's Life for Me) " ( Pinocchio ), " It's a Small World ", "Imperial March" "( Star Wars )", and " Do You Want to Build a Snowman? " ( Frozen ).

Disney Fantasy [ ]

The Disney Fantasy is the fourth cruise ship operated by Disney Cruise Line, and is almost identical to Disney Dream, with gross registered tonnage of 130,000 GRT, a length of 340 meters (1,120 ft), and a width of 37 meters (121 ft). Disney Fantasy has 1,250 staterooms. Additional features not on other cruise ships include Disney Wishes and Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular . Disney Wishes is about three best friends going to Disneyland to celebrate their graduation, where they wish to go on the "Ride of Their Lives" and get taken on a magical journey, led by favorite Disney characters. Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular is a 45-minute comedy musical based on the movie Aladdin . Disney Fantasy also has the popular Aquaduck Water Coaster, the first Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at the sea that turns into the Pirates League on Mickey's Pirates in the Caribbean Party Nights. The Nightclubs District is called Europa and features a re-imagined and expanded Skyline Club, The Tube, La Piazza, O'Gills Pub, and Ooh La La, an adults-only lounge.

Disney Fantasy is based at Disney Cruise Line's terminal at Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship embarks on alternating Eastern and Western 7 night Caribbean cruises and will call on Disney's private island Castaway Cay. Both, the Disney Fantasy and the Disney Dream will continue to be home-based at Port Canaveral at least until the end of 2014 .

The Disney Fantasy entered service on March 31 , 2012 . The maiden voyage called to the Western Caribbean. In early March, the Disney Fantasy was christened in New York City by Mariah Carey. Her husband, Nick Cannon, escorted Minnie Mouse to Deck 2 to christen the ship with a champagne bottle.

The Disney Fantasy's float out took place on January 8 , 2012 , at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, where the Disney Fantasy was built. The sister ship, the Disney Dream, was built at Meyer Werft Shipyard as well. The Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder were built in Italy.

Disney Cruise Ship Stern Characters

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever wondered what characters are on the back of the Disney Cruise Ships? The Disney Cruise Ship stern characters are all unique to each of the individual cruise ships.

The stern character is usually one of the first things which Disney releases details about and concept art for, when they announce a new ship.

The stern character is just another way in which the Disney ships are just that little bit different from other cruise lines. The concept of all of the stern characters on the Disney ships is that they are finishing the paint on the artwork on the stern. Each design cleverly reflects the different personalities of the characters.

So what are the different stern characters on each Disney Cruise Ship? Learn what characters are on the back of the Disney Cruise Ships.

BREAKING NEWS! Disney Treasure cruise ship stern character announced!

Disney Wish Stern Character

disneywishsterncharacter

One of the first news of any kind about the design of the Disney Wish was that her stern character will be Rapunzel from the movie Tangled.

The design cleverly incorporates Rapunzel’s magically long hair into the design. Her ever-trusty chameleon is there with her to hold her paint palette.

Obviously, we know what a talented artist Rapunzel is from the Tangled Movie.

It is fun to speculate about how else Rapunzel will feature in the decor and theme of the new Disney Wish. The Disney Magic now has a Tangled-themed restaurant – Rapunzel’s Royal Table.

It seems likely that Disney Wish will have a Disney Princess-themed restaurant. Tiana’s Place on the Disney Wonder and Rapunzel’s Royal Table have proved to be very popular.

However, as there is already a Rapunzel-themed restaurant on the Disney Magic, perhaps the Wish will have a different Princess. Maybe even a Frozen theme?

Stern Character on the Disney Dream

disneydreamsterncharacter

Sorcerer Mickey is the stern character on the Disney Dream Cruise Ship. Launched in 2010, the Disney Dream is the first of the Dream Class Disney cruise ships.

The inspiration for this representation of Mickey Mouse is of course the classic Disney movie Fantasia. Mickey Mouse is directing his magical brooms to finish the paint on the Disney Dream stern.

A Night In The Heart Of A Dream (Explored)

The lobby atrium character for the Disney Dream is Admiral Donald Duck.

Disney Fantasy Cruise Ships Stern Character

disneyfantasysterncharacter

The much beloved Disney character Dumbo is on the stern of the Disney Fantasy. She was launched just one year after the Disney Dream in 2011 and is the second of the Dream Class ships.

The adorable figure of Dumbo is shown holding the paint pot in his trunk.

Fantastical Holidays

The lobby atrium figure on Disney Fantasy is Minnie Mouse.

This delightful Minnie Mouse statue is inspired, just like the design of the Disney Cruise ships, by the travel of the 1920s and 1930s.

Walt Disney and his wife sailed on cruises and this representation of Minnie Mouse is intended to pay homage to that era of travel

Disney Magic Itineraries

Disney magic review, review of disney magic.

The 1998-built MS Disney Magic cruise ship is Walt Disney 's first (oldest) liner with sistership Disney Wonder (1999).

The vessel (IMO number 9126807) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 308516000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

DCL-Disney Cruise Line is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (shipowner). The company was incorporated in 1996 as "Magical Cruise Company Ltd". Walt Disney also owns the Bahamian private island Castaway Cay (exclusive port of call - for Disney ships only) and an exclusive Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral (Orlando Florida) . Disney cruises are marketed as "family vacations" and feature unique and exclusive activities, such as costumed Disney Characters, adults-only deck areas, dedicated facilities for teens, kids and infants-toddlers, signature (trademarked) shipboard facilities and activities, themed live entertainment.

MS Disney Magic cruise ship

The 1750-passenger ship Disney Magic provides some of the best sea travel vacation experiences. And just like all Disney businesses, the ship's primary market are families with small children (mostly kids younger than 8) - the major revenue provider for the Walt Disney company. However, on Disney Magic, you'll also find many passengers traveling without kids.

The ever first Disney ship, Magic was launched in 1998 to serve the special preferences of a new generation Disney package vacation fun fans. The Disney Magic ship design resembles the 1920's luxurious ocean liners, but what really makes this vessel worthy of its Disney name are all the Disney characters, special facilities, and unique fun activities on-board, along with the greatest kids programs at sea, the most Magic-al deck parties, and excellent service.

The CLIENTELE consists almost entirely of USA and Canada Disney cruise fun fans. The new Disney approach to children by age-related activities and specially dedicated onboard venues makes all ships mostly appealing for multi-generational travelers.

Disney Magic DRESS CODE - day casual and evening resort casual, meaning for men - jackets (no ties) and pants, and for women - summer dresses (no swimwear-shorts-jeans in the main restaurants at dinner). All Disney Magic 7-day sailings include one formal and one semi-formal night.

Disney Magic TIPS (totaling US $12 PP per day, automatically charged to guests' shipboard accounts), given to $8 waiters (dining room server $4, assistant server $3, head server $1) and $4 to cabin attendants. Additionally, a 15% gratuity is included on all bar drinks and onboard service areas.

Decks and Cabins

Most Disney Magic staterooms (877 total, in 22 grades) are 225-260-ft2 Balconies. The ship has 22 Suites, 362 Balcony, 235 Oceanview and 256 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are Royal Suites (845 ft2 / 79 m2 plus 185 ft2 / 17 m2 terrace).

The ever-first Disney ship Magic boasts elegant Art Deco decorations of public spaces and a most affordable luxury in all its staterooms, of which even the standard cabins are designed as mini-suites (separate bedroom and living areas).

All Disney Magic cabins are designed with families in mind - some of the most spacious and most elegant at sea, and of course - with "Mickeys" everywhere. Cabins are quiet and offer comfortable privacy, appealing to both families and people traveling without youngsters. Even the standard Disney Magic cabins boast a separate bedroom and a living area (common to mini-suite accommodations of other brands), 2 beds convertible to a queen, the living room including a convertible sofa (an option for 3rd single bed); many cabins also have bunk beds (for a 4th person).

Disney Magic family cruise cabins for families of 5 have a Murphy bed. Plenty of drawers, a closet with sliding doors, a desk-dressing table, a smart HDTV, electronic safe bos, 2 portable "Wave Phones" (with texting capabilities and coverage throughout the ship and on Castaway island).

A unique feature of all Disney cruise cabins are the split-bathrooms ("bath and a half" configurations) - one with a toilet and a sink, the other with tub-shower-sink (the cheapest insides with a single bath 1 sink). Decent bathroom amenities (soap-shampoo-conditioner-lotion), a hairdryer.

All Disney Magic suites are located on Deck 8 and feature concierge service, deluxe design elements, huge Jacuzzis, better quality mattresses and large verandas (among the additional amenities are robes, slippers, and a vanity pack).

The boat has 11 decks , of which 6 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Disney Magic dining options include 3 main restaurants with the most fun rotational dining scheme (whatever the restaurant, your table number is the same, as well as companions and servers), a traditional 2-seating (at 5:45 and 8:15 pm, the earlier cater to the youngest kids). The traditional "Lumiere's" restaurant is decorated Art Deco (French menu), the "Animator's Palate" boast special light effects and video LED screens, and the "Carioca's" is a Caribbean-themed dining room with the most fun waiters and decorated in beautiful bright colors (this restaurant is also available for breakfast-lunch buffets).

MS Disney Magic cruise ship

The Disney Magic ship food experience features ample portions (everything is on-board made), with several choices of salads and fresh vegetables, a great variety of seafood, meats, pasta, and naturally, a separate kids menu is available.

Casual dining onboard is called "Cabanas" (a buffet restaurant, located high up and aft (overlooking the stern, a great outdoor dining option). Deck 9 offers 3 fast-food stations - the "Pete's Boiler Bites", the "Pinocchio's Pizzeria" and the "Daisy's De-Lites".

Specialty dining options are offered at "Palo" (an adults-only fine restaurant (costs extra, located on Deck 10; reservations are required, it's a relatively small venue, so early booking is advisable). Italian (Med) cuisine, including superb fish and seafood dishes, the brunch here offers Champagne and cold buffet with seafood and meats, great salads and desserts, and hot made-to-order selections (eggs-meat-fish).

The room service menu is simple (cold sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, burgers, lasagna, pizza, cookies), the service is fast, and suite guests enjoy hot breakfast and dining room meals options. Free drinks (Coca-Cola products) are also available at meals and at the 24-hour drink pavilion (Deck 9 aft).

Follows the complete list of Disney Magic restaurants and food bars.

  • Lumiere's Restaurant (471-seat forward Dining Room; with two open Dinner servings - 5:30 p.m.-6 p.m. and 8 p.m.-8:30 p.m.; on 7+ day cruises features Gala Dessert Buffet)

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Disney Magic ship public rooms are nothing short to amazing. The "Walt Disney" Theater has a capacity of 977 seats and offers live performances and huge Disney productions (like Broadway-style musicals and classy review shows) on a 2-deck-high rotational stage. The "Buena Vista" Theater is smaller (showing Disney movies). Most of the ship's public spaces are on Decks 3-4-5. The most famous are: the Promenade Lounge (family-friendly, great music), Studio Sea (game shows, exhibitions, karaoke), the Atrium (a great place to meet Disney characters for an autograph, the place for the Captain's cocktail party and for Disney pin trading), 3 shops (on Deck 4 are "Mickey's Mates" (Disney memorabilia and postcards) and "Treasure Ketch" (logos, jewelry, watches), and the duty-free "Up Beat" is on Deck 3 (perfumes, liquor). The pool deck's adult section has a coffee house - the Cove Cafe (specialty coffees, bar drinks).

MS Disney Magic cruise ship

Like all Disney ships, the Magic has no casino (there's bingo with good jackpots). One of the features that make the Magic ship a special place to be is the deck parties, the highlight being "The Pirates in the Caribbean" Party - a great, most attended by all age groups themed Disney ship cruise fun.

Naturally, most of the shipboard entertainment is Disney themed (like the goldies "Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story", "Villains Tonight!" and the "Disney Dreams") with all the feature Disney characters). And there are Disney movies, including first-runs (shown in the ship's two theaters "Buena Vista" and "Walt Disney") and Disney 3D movies.

In lounges and clubs, there are numerous family activities during the day - dance parties, bingo, pirate quests, shuffleboard and video games tournaments, all kinds of contests, pool games, family karaoke, dance lessons, talent shows. Between dinner times, there is a short family-friendly cabaret show, with its adult version after hours.

Most of the adult-themed activities are at night for guests ages 18-25, like "Match Your Mate", "Singles' Mingle" and "College Club Social". The Magic ship's adult-only daytime programs are 3: the "Navigating the Seas" series (lectures and video info about the ship), the "Disney Behind the Scenes" series (about the "know-how" of Disney specials - from food to entertainment) and the "Art of Entertaining" series, all of which are at no additional charge (for wine tastings there's a $12 charge, $15 for martini and margarita tastings).

Disney cruise water park for kids Aqua Lab

MS Disney Magic kids cruise programs are the main reason for the Disney Magic line's high loyalty guests ratio. Designed with families in mind, there are several huge areas onboard, designated for kids with activities for every age level. All kids ages 3-10 have access to 2 interconnected club areas - the Oceaneer's "Club" (7-10 yo) and "Lab" (8-12 yo).

Kids clubs occupy an enormous space resembling a pirate ship, with PCs and TV monitors cloaked in treasure chests, and fun activities like cooking classes, games and contests, food-fests and pool parties. "Edge" is the tweens' club (11-13 yo) with PC and PS games, arts and crafts, and a bridge simulator for navigating a ship. The teen-only area (14-17 yo) is called "Vibe" (located in a funnel midship) - a special lounge with huge couches, flat TVs and video games, other hit activities are the dance parties and the karaoke. All kids programs (age 3+) are complimentary.

"It's A Small World" ship nursery (babies 3 months to 3 years of age) is at an additional cost of $6 per hour ($5 for the 2nd child). An online service allows guests to order from over 1,000 "Babies Travel Lite" products in advance of their sailing (delivered to their cabin). All services are also available on Castaway Cay. All Disney children counselors are college educated, well experienced and attentive.

Follows the complete list of Disney Magic lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

The Soul Cat Lounge (near Rapunzel's Royal Table restaurant/aft on deck 3) is designed to resemble Half Note Lounge from the movie (Joe Gardner's favorite music spot). The venue is music-themed, with a classic NYC jazz club ambiance and an interior featuring brick walls, wooden accents, comfortable leather seating (surrounding a stage for live music performances in the evenings), Pixar-themed artworks (record labels, concert posters, portraits of Dorothea Williams and her bandmates), music-themed design elements (record players, instruments, Joe Gardner's hat). Table-side are served local brews, signature cocktails (made with New York spirits), a selection of mocktails, brand coffees, sodas, zeppoles (Italian fried doughnuts).

The new production show "An Encanto Celebration" allows guests to engage in music, crafts, and storytelling alongside La Familia Madrigal (family from the Encanto movie). The experience includes meeting and taking photos with Mirabel and Bruno, a sing-along of Encanto songs, creating movie-inspired butterflies and flower crafts. During the show, guests can also enjoy a selection of Colombian beers, cocktails, sodas, film-inspired mocktails.

Itineraries

Disney Magic itinerary program is based on Caribbean and Bahamas roundtrips departing from PortMiami Florida USA , all visiting the DCL's private Bahamian island Castaway Cay .

In September 2020, the liner had planned a European (UK and Ireland) season with 7-day roundtrips from homeport Dover visiting Plymouth , Cork , Liverpool , Greenock , Dublin .

Following the Coronavirus crisis, for summer 2021 (June-September), the ship was scheduled to operate cruises-to-nowhere (mostly 2-3-night plus limited 4-night roundtrips) from homeports London-Tilbury , Liverpool , Newcastle , and Southampton . These unique for DCL itineraries (called "Sea Staycations") were open for booking by UK residents-only and without any call ports.

In fall 2022 the ship operated 7-day NYC to Bermuda (Kings Wharf) itineraries. Since November 2022, Disney Magic is homeported in Galveston Texas for short-breaks (4-night and 5-night) to Mexico's Cozumel and Progreso .

On February 18, 2023, started Disney Magic's homeporting in NOLA/New Orleans Louisiana . The program (run though April 10th) was based on 4-5-6-day roundtrip Western Caribbean itineraries visiting Cozumel (4-day), Cozumel plus Costa Maya (5-day) and Cozumel plus Grand Cayman/George Town Harbour (6-day).

Disney Magic Wiki

The Walt Disney ship Magic is company's first-ever liner, followed by sistership Disney Wonder . Each vessel is 40% smaller in size compared to the 2 newer Disney ships Dream and Fantasy . The inaugural cruise/Maiden Voyage started on July 30, 1998. Ship's Godmother was Patricia Disney (1935-2012) - wife of Roy Edward Disney (1930-2009) who was a senior executive (Vice Chairman and Chairman) for The Walt Disney Company in the period 1954-2009.

The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera yard/hull number 5989) is powered by Wartsila-Sulzer marine diesel engines (model 16ZAV40S) with total power output 58,25 MW. The propulsion system is diesel-electric.

Fun fact is that MS Disney Magic held the record for paying the highest-ever regular Panama Canal passing toll (exactly USD 331,200). However, the record was beaten later by the Princess Cruises ship Coral Princess (USD 400,000).

Outside, the vessel looks like an ocean liner from the early-20th century. Interior decorations are influenced by both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. On Magic debuted many of Disney's Marvel superheroes - a really thrilling experience for the youngest passengers.

Disney Magic refurbishments review

Disney Magic was last drydock-refurbished in 2023 (April 15 thru May 4) at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport .

The 3-week refurbishment included general maintenance works and machinery overhauls, as well as renovation of passenger cabins and public spaces. During the drydock, the Concierge Lounge was redesigned and all concierge staterooms (plus the Royal Suites) were completely refurbished with new fixtures, furniture, artworks.

A new music-themed venue (decorated in themes from Disney's computer-animated film "Soul"/2020) was created - Soul Cat Lounge (aft on deck 3). Also were introduced new movie-themed entertainment programs for families as well as the "An Encanto Celebration" production show (themed on Disney's animation film "Encanto"/2021).

During drydock 2023 was also installed shore power connectivity  allowing the ship to plug in and use the port city's power grid electricity for all onboard services while berthed.

Drydock 2019

During the refurbishment in 2019 were added Rapunzel's Royal Table (themed restaurant/aft on deck 3), the teen club was transformed, Cove Cafe (adults-only venue) was redesigned and Club Disney Junior (lounge part of Disney's Oceaneer Club) was added.

Also was redesigned the Rainforest Room in the adults-only Senses Spa (steam and hydrotherapy).

The project also included general maintenance works and propulsion system upgrade.

Drydock 2013

The Edge (teen club) was relocated (from deck 2 to deck 9), its area was expanded and the amenities there were enhanced (new gaming stations, dance floor).

Also were conducted general maintenance of all mechanical systems, hull and interior painting, piping, propulsion system upgrade (for reducing fuel consumption). 400+ contract workers were employed for all the refurb jobs.

Service history/itineraries review (1998-2016)

Follows the ship's concise service history (former itineraries):

  • [1998-2005] 7-day Caribbean from Port Canaveral (Orlando) Florida
  • [2005-2012] relocated to San Diego CA
  • [2012-2013] relocated to NYC New York and sailing from there to the Bahamas, Canada/New England
  • [2013 June] relocated to Europe ( Barcelona ) for the summer season, also receiving a 6-week extensive refurbishment. After the 2013 Transatlantic crossing started departures out of Miami FL , later was repositioned back to Orlando.

In 2016, Disney deployed the Magic ship in Europe. For the first time ever, Disney offered UK cruise departures (from Dover England) to ports in Baltic Sea (incl Norwegian Fjords), Iceland, UK (British Isles). Throughout 2016 summer, the ship operated in the Western Mediterranean (leaving from Barcelona ). After that followed a 12-day Transatlantic repositioning to NYC for round-trip cruises to Canada (5-6-day to New England - Saint John NB and Halifax NS) and 8-9-day to Florida-Bahamas (visiting Port Canaveral, Nassau, and the private island Castaway Cay).

Disney reveals ‘doctor strange 2’ cost more to make than ‘avengers 2’.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a costly spectacle for Disney ©Marvel Studios 2022. ... [+] All Rights Reserved.

Disney has revealed that the cost of 2022 superhero movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness surged to a staggering $414.9 million (£331.9 million) making it one of the most expensive instalments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), even surpassing team-up flick Avengers: Age of Ultron .

The total budget was buried in filings released earlier this week which show that Avengers: Age of Ultron cost 6.4% less to make than Multiverse of Madness but generated three times more profit based on the box office reported for the movies.

The sequel to 2016's Doctor Strange , Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous sorcerer on a quest to stop Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch from catching a young girl who can travel into different dimensions. The movie was the flagship of the so-called phase four of the MCU and launched the multiverse format which sees Marvel characters from different studios teaming up.

Multiverse of Madness marked Disney's debut of the Mister Fantastic character, played by John Krasinski, and Patrick Stewart's Professor X who appeared in 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four and X-Men movies respectively. It took more than the wave of a magic wand to pull it off.

Movie budgets are usually a closely guarded secret as studios tend to absorb the cost of individual films in their overall expenses and don't itemize the cost of each one. However, films shot in the United Kingdom are exceptions to this and Multiverse of Madness was one of them. It was made by a Disney subsidiary named Supreme Works Productions II in a nod to Strange's role as the sorcerer supreme.

Shooting took place at Longcross Studios outside London, which has been home to many other Disney movies including the first Doctor Strange , 2019's Aladdin and Guardians of the Galaxy five years before that. Multiverse of Madness was also filmed on location with the historic British Museum doubling for the headquarters of Stewart's cross-studio super team, The Illuminati. A blossom-filled park in south-west England was also the setting for a showdown between Strange and the Scarlet Witch though the UK wasn't just chosen for its spectacular scenery.

Although Multiverse of Madness appeared to take place in New York City, it was mostly filmed in the ... [+] UK ©Marvel Studios 2022. All Rights Reserved.

Studios filming in the UK benefit from the government's Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit which gives them a cash reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the money they spend in the country. To qualify for the reimbursement, films must pass a points test based on factors such as how much of the production took place in the UK, whether the film showcases the UK, whether the score was recorded in the UK and how many of the lead actors and production team are from the UK.

It perhaps explains the incongruous appearance in Multiverse of Madness of a classic red British phone box and also why Stewart's super group includes fellow Brits Hayley Atwell and Lashana Lynch.

Crucially, in order to receive the reimbursement, at least 10% of a film's core production costs need to relate to activities in the UK. In order to demonstrate this to the government, studios set up a separate Film Production Company in the UK for each picture they make there and it is responsible for everything from pre-production and principal photography to post-production, delivery of the finished film and payment of goods and services in relation to it.

These companies have to file publicly-available financial statements and this lifts the curtain on precisely how much it costs to make the movies. The filings show everything from the headcount and salaries to the total costs and the level of cash reimbursement.

As with all UK companies, the financial statements are released in stages long after the period they relate to which explains why Supreme Works Productions II filed its financial statements for the year to May 8, 2023 earlier this week. As the companies have to pay for services relating to the finished film they continue to book costs in their financial statements long after the premiere. So even though the latest financial statements for Multiverse of Madness cover the year immediately following the movie's release, they show that Disney still spent a total of $66 million (£52.8 million) on it during that time.

As the chart below shows, this yielded total costs of $414.9 million but then came a $64.3 million (£51.4 million) reimbursement from the UK government reducing Disney's net spending on Multiverse of Madness down to $350.6 million.

The costs of the UK-based Marvel movies

The studios' biggest returns come from the box office receipts and they typically get around 50% of the total. Multiverse of Madness is Disney's highest-grossing Marvel movie since the start of the pandemic but it still failed to pull in more than $1 billion as many of its predecessors have done.

According to industry analyst Box Office Mojo, Multiverse of Madness made a total of $955.8 million putting Disney's share at $477.9 million. Deducting the $350.6 million costs from this left Disney with a $127.3 million profit at the box office which is more than any other UK-based MCU movie has made since the start of the pandemic. Likewise, it is also more than three times higher than the amount Disney made from 2011's Captain America , one of the earliest MCU releases.

However, not only was the profit of Multiverse of Madness 12.3% lower than that of its predecessor but it was even eclipsed by 2013's Thor: The Dark World which is considered to be one of the MCU's biggest flops. In its defence, Multiverse of Madness was released in May 2022 when the pandemic was still a concern for many theater-goers though that didn't stop Sony's superhero flick Spider-Man: No Way Home from hauling in more than double its takings five months earlier.

Multiverse of Madness could not match the box office of Spider-Man: No Way Home

When it comes to profit, none of the other MCU movies have as much muscle as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame . Together they generated $1.2 billion of profit at the box office but because they were made by the same Disney production company it isn't possible to tell how much is allocated to each movie or how much each one cost.

In contrast, 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron was the only movie made by Assembled Productions II and cost $388.4 million (£310.7 million) but generated $383 million of profit. Likewise, both the first Doctor Strange movie and Thor: The Dark World cost almost half as much as Multiverse of Madness making it not just one of the most-expensive MCU movies but one of the costliest films of all time.

Bearing this in mind, it's perhaps no surprise that just four months after Disney's chief executive Bob Iger returned to the helm of the company in November 2022, he told a Morgan Stanley Morgan Stanley conference that he had begun "reducing the expense per content, whether it’s a TV series or a film, where costs have just skyrocketed in a huge way and not a supportable way in my opinion." Since then, Iger has cut $7.5 billion of costs but that's just the start.

Earlier this week Disney announced that in the three months to March 30, its total revenues rose 1.2% to $22.1 billion with its media and content division generating more of it than any other segment of the company. However, media and content only produced 20.3% of the $3.8 billion operating income with 59.5% coming from theme parks and cruises.

The colossal cost of producing movies and streaming TV shows isn't the only reason for the lower operating income from Disney's media and content division. The sheer volume of productions is also an obstacle because the more there are, the greater the chances of a flop and the more saturated the market becomes.

Accordingly, Iger told analysts that he has "been working hard with the studio to reduce output and focus more on quality". He added that when it comes to the MCU "we're slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four, and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, at the maximum three."

A third instalment in the Doctor Strange series has yet to get the green light and given how much it cost to make the second one it may end up being the final act for the sorcerer supreme.
