Live rail updates after damage to overhead lines stops trains at Grantham

People have been queuing for rail replacement buses for hours - see our live blog below for the latest updates

  • Updated 22:43, 10 DEC 2023

Amy S said '"Nearly 3 hours and hundreds of people stranded, 2 buses only"

Damage to overhead railways lines has caused disruption in Lincolnshire tonight (Sunday). People have been queuing for rail replacement buses for hours at Grantham, with many taking to social media to vent their frustration.

LNER announced earlier on social media: "Due to severe damage to overhead lines between #Peterborough and #Grantham yesterday. Customers are advised not to travel today, Sun 10 Dec."

Many have obviously taken trains regardless, and have ended up stuck queuing for onward transport. Some report being held in trains outside the station.

Amy S @mackemmagic73 said on X - formerly known as Twitter - "Nearly 3 hours and hundreds of people stranded, 2 buses only and now the driver needs a break so empty bus standing waiting."

LNER said on its website that disruption is expected until the end of today. See our live blog below for the latest updates

  • What's happened? 18:24

Disruption remains

The morning team will be back with updates on this incident.

Disruption expected until 10.30pm - National Rail

Lines have reopened between Peterborough and Grantham following damage to the overhead electric wires yesterday. Trains running between these stations may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 45 minutes or revised. Additionally, the emergency services were attending to an incident at Grantham station. The station has now reopened. Please note, there are a high volume of customers travelling today which may mean services are severely overcrowded. Customers are advised not to travel today, Sunday 10 December. Major disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day.

'No advice not to travel'

Jessica Furber @furber_jessica replyed to @LNER :

I had no notification from @LNER that the train was cancelled and talking to LNER staff at York they advised a route to be Grantham to Peterborough to London! There was no advice ‘NOT TO TRAVEL’ #Grantham

'Worst nightmare'

Laryssa Erratt @bylaryss posted:

"This is my worst nightmare! Currently on the train just outside Grantham, which has been on hold for the last hour and a half with no updates or whatsoever on what time we will be able to move on. Please do something @LNER #LNER #Grantham #Peterborough

'Dark. Cold. No taxis. No buses'

Linda @Se25a asked National Rail for a response in her post:

#Grantham @nationalrailenq Why are passengers at Grantham station not being helped? Thousands are stuck there. It's dark. Cold. No taxis. No buses.

National Rail responded that she must approach station staff.

'Chaotic' scenes, says eyewitness

Mark Ballard @markballard27 posted on X:

Currently waiting on a train outside #Grantham , in the hope we might get a @LNER train heading north from there. Apparently things are too chaotic at Grantham station for us to proceed.

East Midlands Railway update

Trains are unable to run Grantham and Peterborough in both directions. Trains will be diverted on the Liverpool Lime Street / Nottingham / Norwich route, these services will be delayed up to 20 minutes and will not call at Grantham. Not all of East Midlands Railway's trains will be able to divert, and may have cancellations as a result. At present East Midlands Railway are expecting the problem to continue all day today.

What's happened?

Due to severe damage to overhead lines between Peterborough and Grantham yesterday, customers are advised not to travel today, Sunday 10 December. The lines remain blocked today, Sunday 10 December, between Peterborough and Grantham to allow repairs to be made to the overhead line, Sunday 10 December. Customers with tickets dated 9 or 10 December 2023 can use their tickets for travel on 11 or 12 December. Alternatively, you are able to obtain a refund from the point of purchase. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to your journey today.

Rail passengers left stranded by overhead power cable chaos for fourth time in a week

Rail passengers have been left stranded by overhead power cable chaos for the fourth time in a week .

Hundreds of people using the East Coast Mainline on Sunday were unable to travel directly between London and northern England or Scotland after electricity lines collapsed.

The outage knocked out all four rail lines on a 35-mile section between Grantham, Lincolnshire and Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, with passengers told to leave trains and get buses or taxis.

Videos showed hundreds of passengers left aimlessly stranded amid “pandemonium” at Grantham station as scores of cancellations and delays affected five major train operators: London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Lumo, East Midlands Railway, Grand Central and Hull Trains.

It was the fourth time in a week that power cables came down on England’s railway network after incidents at Manchester Piccadilly, Paddington station and Retford in Nottinghamshire.

The East Coast Mainline disruption was blamed on Storm Elin, which brought 45mph winds and heavy rain to the north-west of England on the weekend. It was followed by Storm Fergus which moved in from the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday.

LNER was among multiple rail operators to tell people “do not travel” on Sunday but its managing director David Horne warned that on Monday “there may be some limited service disruption due to trains and crews being out of position”.

One passenger, journalist Brian Ging, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “For those of us with no choice, your arrangements have been disgraceful. No information at Grantham, chaos on the southbound platform. There are 2 buses , two! For hundreds of people.”

Pandemonium

Prof Nick Bailey, from the University of Westminster, wrote: “It would be good if someone could explain why so many overhead lines are being damaged on @‌LNER and @‌GWR in the last few days, is it weather or a design/installation fault or something else? All causing massive aggravation.”

A third passenger tweeted that there was “pandemonium at Grantham station where LNER has dumped everyone travelling south” with “no crowd control” and three-hour queues for buses to Peterborough to resume travelling to London by rail.

It comes after an overhead power line exploded at Manchester Piccadilly station during Storm Elin on Saturday, which was believed to have been caused by a falling tree, causing multiple train cancellations.

On Thursday, the singer James Blunt was among thousands of people trapped on cold, dark trains for hours after overhead wires came crashing down when a train struck an obstruction outside London Paddington station.

And last week LNER apologised for “severe disruption” when overhead power cables came down between Retford and Newark on the East Coast Mainline due to “excessive wear of one component”.

Football joke misses target

As LNER was bombarded with angry messages on social media, one staff member appeared to make light of the fact that many Newcastle United fans were blocked from travelling to Tottenham for a Premier League match that the northern side lost 4-1.

Mr Horne apologised after LNER’s Twitter account said in response to a customer: “To be fair, being a Tottenham fan – we’re saving you from seeing another loss...”

Helen Kelly, a director at OK! magazine, said she was “stranded at Grantham thanks to LNER” but pointed out that “they’ve known about these problems since last night yet there’s still 1000s waiting to get home and only one coach to help”. LNER responded that she should “check before you travel and follow the travel advice”.

A spokesman said there was “severe damage to the overhead lines” and “our teams have worked hard to keep customers who did travel on the move with onward transport where possible. We appreciate customers’ journeys have been affected and thank them for their understanding.”

In 2022, Network Rail, which is responsible for railway infrastructure, launched a “resilience taskforce” to help protect overhead lines from “extreme weather”.

Network Rail confirmed there had been “a significant amount of cancellations” on Sunday.

A spokesman said: “We’re really sorry for the ongoing disruption to train services on the East Coast Main Line today. Repairs to damaged overhead power lines near Grantham is well under way, and we hope to restore services tomorrow [Monday].

“There has been an unusual coincidence of power-line problems in various parts of the country over the past week or so. We do not believe they are related but extreme weather has certainly played its part.”

Moscow for everyone: Here's how to enjoy the Russian capital whatever your passion

© Discover Moscow

Flanked by the imposing buildings of the Kremlin, the stepped granite blocks of Lenin’s Mausoleum and the fanciful onion domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow's Red Square is nothing short of legendary, but only a taste of what the Russian capital has to offer.

Manicured gardens and parks, brutalist monuments, quirky museums, open-air cinemas and glitzy boutiques co-exist in this storied city, which burst into the 21st century with a slew of restaurant openings and grand urban schemes.

Visitors have never had it so easy, with a raft of digital innovations designed to facilitate and enhance the tourist experience.

One such is the RUSSPASS , a new e-service that allows users not only to plan and book attractions in Moscow and across Russia, but also to create bespoke itineraries to suit every type of interest and budget. The RUSSPASS app is available in English and Spanish and allows tourists to buy e-tickets and to top up the balance of a Moscow transport card.

Beyond caviar and ballet

Moscow’s burgeoning gastronomic scene has been causing a stir locally and internationally. Published for the first time in 2021, the Michelin Moscow Guide awarded its prestigious stars to no fewer than nine of the city’s restaurants. A total of 69 restaurants were recommended, with three of them awarded ‘green stars’ for sustainability. Fifteen restaurants received the ‘Bib Gourmand’, which acknowledges excellent cooking at affordable prices.

Time-honoured haunts for blinis and caviar include the baroque Café Pushkin and the formidable soviet-themed Dr Zhivago , while the glass-domed White Rabbit , whose chef starred in Netflix's 'Chef's Table', continues to dazzle with creative twists on classic dishes. Also creating a stir is Twins Garden , which focuses on wildly inventive vegetable dishes and home-grown produce.

euronews

As the country emerges from the pandemic, music, theatre and exhibitions are also back on the agenda. A performance from the matchless Bolshoi Ballet has been a hot ticket since the 18th century, but the Bolshoi Theatre is just one of more than 700 Moscow cultural centers.

These include world-renowned palaces of art such as the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts , a remarkable collection bringing together masterpieces from every major Western movement as well as Egyptian antiquities.

Lesser-known but equally fascinating galleries lie all over the city. An offshoot of the Tretyakov Gallery, the New Tretyakov Gallery also focuses on modern Russian artists, and features works by Kandinsky, Chagall and Popova, among many others.

Moscow's wealth of parks and curious architecture make it a great place for children. The fairytale colours of buildings such as St Basil's Cathedral are every match for the architectural whimsy at Dream Island , a huge indoor theme park where cartoon characters wander through the crowds.

The shiplike Northern River Terminal, built in the 1930s in a Stalinist style, is also a favourite, and has recently undergone dramatic renovation. It now includes a wealth of children’s playgrounds, heating swimming pools and a winter ice rink.

euronews

Other ways to keep the little ones entertained include catching a movie at the Khudozhestvenny cinema or a trip on the Moskva River cable car. This vertiginous ride has panoramic views over the city, taking in the Moscow river, the Ostankino TV and radio tower and the skyscrapers of the business district.

These and other activities for children and families are laid out in the official city tourist portal, discovermoscow.com . Here you’ll find information on every type of attraction, from which animals can be petted at the VDNH city farm to the best street food snacks and where they can be found.

It’s a huge and colourful resource, covering the most obscure museums and secret parks, with suggestions for different days of the week and a blog-style news section. On a practical level it lays bare the transport system, COVID-19 protocols, Wi-Fi possibilities and where to hire bikes and scooters.

Rising to current challenges with innovation

euronews

Not only its attractions, but also Moscow’s enormous efforts to face the health crisis in practical and forward-thinking ways have been acknowledged on the international stage. In 2021 it has been nominated for both World’s Leading City Destination and Europe’s Leading City Destination at the World Travel Awards.”

The authorities’ support for the travel industry in troubled times has seen dozens of online events and international tourism conferences, as well as the launch of the Moscow Travel Hub, a collaborative platform to promote the creation and development of new products and services.

The spring of 2021 saw the Moscow Travel Hack, an extensive hackathon in which finalists were offered financial support for the implementation of their products, at a time when digital tourism solutions have never been so integral.

Digital tourists can use discovermoscow.com to take a virtual trip to the ballet or opera and even watch cooking or fashion shows. Together with the wealth of detail and endless images of the site, even armchair travellers can experience the wonders of Russia’s greatest metropolis.

GOP-controlled Arizona House votes to repeal 1864 abortion ban. Measure now goes to Senate

travel news grantham

The Arizona House on Wednesday narrowly voted to repeal a near-total abortion ban dating from 1864, capping three weeks of efforts that have galvanized national attention.

The 32-28 vote came after passionate speeches from most Republicans, who described abortion in graphic detail and as contrary to Republican values.

But their attempts to block the repeal failed when Republicans Matt Gress and Justin Wilmeth of Phoenix and Tim Dunn of Yuma joined with all 29 Democrats to pass House Bill 2677.

“Stop calling it archaic to ban abortions," said Rep. Barbara Parker, R-Mesa, referring to critics of the near-total abortion ban who constantly note it was enacted 160 years ago. "It's archaic to do abortions.”

Parker, like many of her fellow Republicans, called abortion murder because it does not respect the life of unborn children.

“I can hear their silent screams and with my voice, I vote no." Parker, R-Mesa, said.

Aside from the emotional comments, there was little reaction when the vote was finalized. Democrats and the three Republicans were silent as they cast their votes.

But anger bubbled over when Gress then motioned that the bill be sent to the Senate and have it returned without amendments so it could be immediately transmitted to Gov. Katie Hobbs for her action.

That motion failed, but it unleashed an immediate and angry response from Republicans who saw it as unnecessary and divisive.

Republican Speaker Pro Tem Travis Grantham said the motion "drives a knife" into the House chamber, which has endured three successive weeks of tense and dramatic debate over the law that the state Supreme Court upheld on April 9.

House Speaker Ben Toma immediately removed Gress, as well as Rep. Oscar De Los Santos, D-Phoenix, from the Appropriations Committee, a key panel that is pivotal to work on the state budget.

He also booted De Los Santos from the Rules Committee. Toma, R-Glendale, did not explain why, other than to say that was his decision. But his anger was palpable at what many Republicans saw as an unwelcome victory lap over a highly sensitive issue.

Democrats said the motion was in line with majority opinion to hasten the repeal of the 1864 law.

House Minority Leader Lupe Contreras called De Los Santos' punishment "bull----."

“We weren't trying to undercut Republicans. It was all about doing the people's work,” Contreras, D-Avondale, said.

Both Gress and Dunn released statements explaining their votes.

Dunn said the 1864 law was "not perfect" because "protecting women in life-threatening situations and accounting for cases of rape and incest were not considered at the time of its passing."

A legislative veteran, Dunn described himself as "deeply pro-life," but said if the 1864 law was allowed to stand, he was convinced more lives would be lost. It also would have the effect of propelling more votes for a citizen initiative that would broaden abortion rights because that would be a more palatable option than a near-total ban. Dunn said he opposed the intiative.

Wilmeth late Wednesday said he had nothing more to say beyond his agreement with Dunn's statement.

"I echo what Rep. Dunn said in his statement and my rationale for my vote was the same," he wrote in a text message to The Arizona Republic.

Gress, who made the first motion Wednesday to bring up the vote, called the Civil War-era law " unworkable and out of line with the values of Arizonans."

Like Dunn, he said he is pro-life. He urged the state Senate to act quickly.

Next up: The Senate

The vote turns attention to the state Senate, which is poised to take up the matter next Wednesday, if there is agreement to bring it up for a vote. Last week, with little fanfare, the Senate started work on Senate Bill 1734, which is identical to the measure the House approved.

What's in the Howell Code? What you need to know about the history of Arizona's abortion ban

There might be another impetus for quick work on a repeal: Lawyers for the doctor whose lawsuit successfully reinstated the 1864 law contend the law is enforceable as of this week. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, as well as GOP leaders in the Legislature, argue that won't happen until June 8, citing an agreement reached in a separate court decision. Mayes has vowed to not enforce the law in any circumstance.

Toma called on Hobbs to rescind her executive order that bars county attorneys from enforcing Arizona abortion law, but said he doubted she would do so.

In the remote possibility of such an action, there theoretically could be enforcement of the 1864 law, since the repeal is not yet final, pending Senate action. And even then, if it passes the Senate, it won't take effect from 90 days from the end of the legislative session. That date is far from clear.

Relief, disappointment on the vote

Reaction was widespread and broke along ideological lines.

The Alliance Defending Freedom, which successfully defended the 1864 law before the state Supreme Court, expressed disappointment in a statement.

"Life is a human right, and it always will be," said senior counsel Jake Warner. "This doesn’t cease to be true because of a vote. We will continue to do everything we can to protect life and advocate for real support and real healthcare for women and families in Arizona and across the country."

Likewise, Cathi Herrod, president of the anti-abortion Center for Arizona Policy, was dismayed at the vote.

“I weep and I grieve for the lives of unborn children that are lost to abortion and for the lives of women that will be harmed by abortion,” Herrod said. She was a key advocate for ensuring that the 1864 law would take effect if the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, which it did in June 2022.

Chris Love, spokesperson for Arizona for Abortion Access initiative, called the House's vote "too little, too late." That's because the House didn't muster enough votes to pass the repeal on an emergency basis. If that were the case, it would allow the repeal to take effect as soon as Hobbs would sign it.

Instead, the 1864 law is set to have the force of law on June 8, well before HB 2677 is expected to take effect.

Initiative backers said they'll press on with their efforts to get the measure on the Nov. 5 ballot and to convince Arizona voters why it's needed.

“One thing remains clear ― anti-abortion politicians and architects of a scam to confuse voters cannot be trusted to give Arizonans the freedom to make their own deeply personal decisions about abortion," said Cheryl Bruce, campaign manager for Arizona for Abortion Access.

Attorney General Mayes said in a statement that she was glad "sanity prevailed at the House" and she urged the Senate to act quickly.

"That 160-year-old law that criminalizes doctors and nurses for caring for their patients and endangers the lives and health of women across our state has no place in the 21 st century," Mayes said.

The fight isn't over

Republicans are still working on a possible referral, or referrals, that could put a competing abortion measure on the November ballot. They are looking for ways to blunt the impact of the initiative drive that would allow abortions until viability, usually 22 or 24 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions in some circumstances.

Earlier Wednesday, the House Rules Committee approved the late introduction of up to three concurrent resolutions that could go to the ballot. There were no details on what the measures might propose, but the action queues the measures up for House action next month. The sponsors would be one or all of the four Republicans in House leadership: Toma, Grantham, Majority Leader Leo Biasiucci and Majority Whip Teresa Martinez.

A ballot referral requires a simple majority of each chamber to move to the Nov. 5 ballot. Given the narrow margins in the Legislature, that means all 31 House Republicans would have to agree, assuming Democrats would oppose anything that would compete with the Arizona for Abortion Access initiative.

Like many former Soviet countries, Mother Russia struggles to successfully confront issues of widespread poverty, alcoholism, failing healthcare, and environmental protection. But Moscow has burgeoned into one of the most expensive, exclusive and largest travel destinations in the world. It comes complete with world-class museums, magnificent palaces, $1,000-a-night hotels, "face-control" nightclubs and internationally-renowned restaurants. Don't think you can afford Moscow? Don't be afraid. You can still find affordable deals if you are vigilant. This metropolis has a big and bold character and grandiose setting that's definitely worth getting to know.

Moscow Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Moscow is April and May, when the temperature creeps into the 50s and 60s, the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day, and hotel rates have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges. Of course, the golden period is summer, when the city is warm and bustling. But if you want to (slightly) spare yourself from the perpetually expensive rates, try the shoulder seasons in the spring and early fall. Preferably spring, since fall experiences more rainfall and less sunlight. Winters are brutally cold, but this is when you'll get a true glimpse into the Moscow experience (A frost-bitten walk through Red Square seems to intensify the historical significance of this great capital city).

Weather in Moscow

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

A little Russian English is spoken only in major hotels and restaurants, and you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the less tourist-heavy areas. American visitors also struggle with the Cyrillic spellings and pronunciations. Practice some key Russian phrases on the long flight over.

A little tipping Unlike most other European cities, tipping (five to 10 percent) in restaurants is the custom.

A lot of vodka This Russian drink of choice (yes, they usually consume it straight) is found at any bar. But if you wish to taste it and learn about its origins, the Moscow Distillery Cristall is your best bet.

How to Save Money in Moscow

If it seems too good to be true It probably is. Take that proverb to heart in Moscow, and don't expect the Czarist medal you purchased off a street vendor to be worth anything more than a good memory.

If you're oblivious on the subway You'll probably leave several rubles lighter. Pickpockets prey on unsuspecting foreigners in crowded places, particularly metro cars. Beware!

If you're not scared of the dark You may be able to handle Moscow's long nights in fall, winter and spring, when hotels offer the lowest rates. December sees an average of 18 hours of sunlight … in total.

Culture & Customs

English is spoken in major hotels and restaurants, but you'll find mostly Russian speakers in the less tourist-heavy areas, such as at the market or in small inns. Some helpful Russian greetings include the informal hello (pronounced, pri-VET ); the formal hello ( Zdravst-vwee-tye ); the informal goodbye ( pah-KAH ); and the formal goodbye ( Dah svih-DA-nee-ye ). To thank someone, say " Spas-EE-ba ."

What to Eat

Traditional Russian fare focuses on hearty meat dishes and cold soup, a particularly Russian specialty. But don't arrive in Moscow thinking you'll experience only the old cuisine. Russia's new personality has been accompanied by a lavish taste for international cuisine, especially Asian food. Sushi and Asian fusion restaurants are among the most popular in the city, and other dining options include American and Italian cuisine. Eating out, like everything in Moscow, can be very expensive, but you can find cheaper restaurants in shopping centers and areas outside the city center.

Stay alert for pickpockets when using public transport and when visiting the main tourist sites. Many an unsuspecting traveler has been relieved of some rubles on the Moscow Metro and near Red Square. Also, make sure to exercise extra caution when leaving bars and clubs at night.

There have been cases of corrupt police asking for random fines -- if this occurs, get the officer's number and name and ask to go to the police station with him or her.

Getting Around Moscow

The best way to get around Moscow is the metro. Faster and more efficient than the trolley buses and trams, this extensive system has stations that contain beautiful ornamentation, sculptures and mosaics. You could rent a car, but it's best to use public transportation to avoid the city's perpetually congested roads. Plus, street signs are all in Russian. In fact, English signs are nonexistent in the public transit system as well, so it's best to quickly get familiar with a map. Most travelers arrive through Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), but there are several other airports that serve the metro area. Several buses and a metro line shuttle airport travelers to and from downtown.

Entry & Exit Requirements

Acquiring a visa to travel in Russia is a bit more complicated and expensive than visiting other countries. Every foreign traveler entering Russia must have a Russian-based sponsor (like a hotel, tour company, university or relative). In addition to a valid U.S. passport, you must also obtain a travel visa from a Russian embassy or consulate prior to arriving in Russia. If you plan to stay in Russia for more than seven days, you have to register your visa and migration card (the white paper document given by the border police on first entry to Russia) with the Federal Migration Service. Visas can cost anywhere from $160 to $250 per person, depending on the length of your stay. For more information on entry and exit requirements, visit the U.S. State Department website .

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

travel news grantham

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
