The British & Irish Lions have today released the nine-match schedule for the 2025 Tour to Australia including three Test matches against the Wallabies. Two years out from the Tour, it’s been confirmed that the eagerly awaited Test clashes will take place on 19 July, 26 July and 2 August. The Lions will travel to Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney respectively for the Test matches.

2025 Lions Tour to Australia (kick off times TBC)

  • 28 June, Lions vs Western Force, Perth (Optus Stadium)
  • 2 July, Lions vs Queensland Reds, Brisbane (Suncorp Stadium)
  • 5 July, Lions vs NSW Waratahs, Sydney (Allianz Stadium)
  • 9 July, Lions vs ACT Brumbies, Canberra (GIO Stadium)
  • 12 July, Lions vs Invitational AU & NZ, Adelaide (Adelaide Oval)
  • 19 July, 1st Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Brisbane (Suncorp Stadium)
  • 22 July, Lions vs Melbourne Rebels, Melbourne (Marvel Stadium)
  • 26 July, 2nd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Melbourne (Melbourne Cricket Ground/MCG)
  • 2 Aug, 3rd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Sydney (Accor Stadium)

The British & Irish Lions will travel throughout Australia with games taking place in some of the most impressive stadiums in world sport.

The Lions will begin the Tour in Perth against the Western Force before facing fellow Australian Super Rugby Pacific sides, the Queensland Reds, the NSW Waratahs, and the ACT Brumbies. The Lions will continue their preparation for the first Test by facing an invitational Australian and New Zealand team in a clash at the Adelaide Oval.

Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium will host the first Test on Saturday 19 July. Following this, a midweek warm up fixture against Melbourne Rebels will take place at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday 22 July.

The second Test will be played on Saturday 26 July at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which has a capacity of 100,000. A potential sell-out crowd at the renowned venue would be a record for a British & Irish Lions Test.

This Test would also represent one of the highest attendances at a rugby match in history. The final Test will be played in front of over 80,000 fans at Sydney’s Accor Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday 2 August.

A strong partnership and a common goal between The British & Irish Lions, Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship has resulted in the Lions having a two-week preparation period before the Tour commences, giving the Lions the best chance of regaining the Series on Australian soil, a country where they enjoyed their last tour win in 2013. Further detail around pre-tour activities, including a pre-tour warm up fixture, will be announced at a later stage.

Details on the Tour schedule follow the announcement of major commercial partners for the Tour, with The British & Irish Lions recently confirming global rugby brand Canterbury as official kit provider and the global insurance group Howden as official front of shirt/jersey sponsor . Confectionery brand Cadbury’s and sportswear manufacturer Asics will continue as the Wallabies official front of shirt and kit partners.

The 2025 Tour to Australia promises to be one of the most eagerly anticipated tours in history considering the absence of fans for the 2021 Tour of South Africa.

Supporters who want to be part of the greatest experience in rugby can guarantee their place for ticket-inclusive travel packages to Australia with The British & Irish Lion’s own travel company, Lions Rugby Travel.

Priority Access Passes are on sale now which will ensure a priority window on packages when they become available. Passes are fully refundable should you choose not to travel and come off your final balance when you book. To purchase Passes or for more information, click here.

“We are delighted to announce the Tour schedule today as we look ahead to what is to be one of the most eagerly anticipated Series in history,” said Ben Calveley, CEO of The British & Irish Lions.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank Rugby Australia for the strong level of collaboration in planning for this tour and we look forward to continuing to work with them over the next two years. I would also like to thank Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship, whose cooperation has resulted in the longest preparation period for a tour in recent history, which gives us the best possible chance of a Series victory. We look forward to continuing to work with our hosts and our partners to create one of the best tours ever”.

“As we begin the countdown to Australia in 2025, The British & Irish Lions brand and organisation has never been stronger with a global fan base of some 14 million people, a significant following and strong level of engagement through our various digital platforms, and a wide range of commercial partners comprised of some of the biggest brands and organisations in the world.

Our ambition is to further build upon this position and make this upcoming tour the greatest Lions tour ever, positioning it as the major global sporting event of 2025.”

Ieuan Evans, Chairman of The British & Irish Lions, added: “British & Irish Lions Tours are unique in the world of sport, both in terms of the ultimate challenge they represent and the cultural impact they have.  Lions tours to Australia have always been memorable occasions and the 2025 Tour promises to be no different.

I know how special it is to pull on that famous red jersey in Australia, having toured there during the 1989 Tour. What I have learned from those special games is how important the fans are to roaring us on to victory so to be able to announce ticket package details is very exciting.

“Being a part of The British & Irish Lions means being able to unite and inspire through extraordinary rugby experiences, and working closely with our host partners in Rugby Australia, we believe that we can provide an epic tour that will be a global sporting event not to be missed”.

Commenting on the announcement, Rugby Australia CEO, Phil Waugh said: “The British & Irish Lions Tour is one of the great sporting festivals – it is a real landmark of Australian and world sport. Rugby Australia is looking forward to welcoming back the Lions for the first time in 12 years – as well as the tens of thousands of Lions fans from the northern hemisphere.

It is an exciting fixture of matches all around the country with the Lions taking on our Super Rugby franchises, three massive Test matches, and a marquee match in Adelaide featuring a combined invitational Australia-New Zealand side.”

The British & Irish Lions will lock horns with Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on their 2025 tour and seek to set a record crowd of 100,000 at the iconic venue.

The Lions have announced their schedule for the tour in two years’ time, which includes Tests in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, five matches against Australia’s five Super Rugby sides as well as a fixture against an invitational Australia and New Zealand combined side.

The Lions are also lining up a warm-up match before arriving in Australia - in 2021, prior to the tour of South Africa, they hosted Japan at Murrayfield - meaning the 2025 trip is set to be restored to 10 fixtures in total, as was the case in 2017.

The tour of South Africa comprised just eight matches - plus the Japan fixture - but following a historic agreement between the Lions and the Premiership clubs, the tourists will have considerable more preparation time for a bigger schedule. After the Premiership agreed to move its final forward, the Lions will have a full two weeks together and England-based players will be available from the onset.

The United Rugby Championship has traditionally been more accommodating but four years ago, with no agreement reached with the Premiership, the warm-up match against Japan took place on the same day as the Premiership final, much to the league’s frustration. Furthermore, Warren Gatland - head coach on the last three tours - has spoken of how the Premiership’s intransigence has counted against English players for selection in the past.

The British & Irish Lions chief executive, Ben Calveley, said: “I would like to thank Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship, whose cooperation has resulted in the longest preparation period for a tour in recent history, which gives us the best possible chance of a series victory.”

The first match in Australia will take place against the Western Force in Perth on 28 June with a further four quick-fire matches before the first Test in Brisbane on 19 July. The Lions will then face the Melbourne Rebels three days later and four days before the second Test at the MCG before concluding the series at Sydney’s Olympic stadium.

• 26 July , 2nd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Melbourne (Melbourne Cricket Ground/MCG)

• 2 Aug , 3rd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Sydney (Accor Stadium)

The match against the Rebels allows for a bumper tour but, interestingly, there was no midweek fixture in South Africa once the 2021 series had started with Gatland insisting it caused too many problems and meant for a bloated squad. The Rebels fixture therefore raises the prospect of a situation similar to 2017 when a handful of players dubbed the Geography Six were drafted into New Zealand at short notice so that frontline players could be rested.

After playing out the 2021 tour in empty stadiums, however, the onus is on bumper ticket sales for the 2025 trip. The MCG has a capacity of 100,024 and combined with Sydney (82,000) and Brisbane (52,500), the forthcoming tour is on course to eclipse the 192,972 combined attendance who saw the Lions’ three Tests against the Wallabies in 2013.

Meanwhile, Marcus Smith has delivered England head coach Steve Borthwick a major boost by signing a new Harlequins contract amid considerable interest from France.

after newsletter promotion

Smith was out of contract in 2024 and was attracting interest from Racing 92, who are looking for a marquee fly-half signing after losing Finn Russell to Bath. Smith was thought to be exploring his options having lost his place in the England starting XV during the Six Nations but Borthwick is expected to include him in his World Cup squad.

The England head coach will also look for Smith to be a key part of his post-World Cup plans and with the Rugby Football Union digging its heels in over its ruling that players based abroad are not eligible for selection, the 24-year-old’s new deal will be welcomed by Borthwick.

“I love the club,” said Smith. “It’s been my home since the age of 14 and I want to repay the faith shown in me and help Quins win trophies.”

By contrast, wing Jack Nowell completed a move to European champions La Rochelle yesterday. The 30-year-old, capped 46 times by England, leaves Exeter after 12 years. He had already made himself unavailable for this autumn’s World Cup.

LIONS TOUR TO AUSTRALIA 2025

It was their first series win since 1997 and went to the deciding Test match in Sydney in front of the one of the biggest British & Irish Lions crowds ever.

The Tour to Australia in 2013 was a memorable journey across one of the most beautiful countries in the world and was a crowning glory for head coach Warren Gatland.

This was the Lions’ first Tour to Australia since 2001 and under the captaincy of Sam Warburton, they got off to a winning start in Brisbane. George North scored one of the greatest Lions Test tries of all time in a nervy victory in front of thousands of Lions fans.

Ahead of the second Test in Melbourne, Australia was awash with red as fans soaked up the delights of the Whitsunday Islands, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Uluru and much more. The Wallabies ground their way to victory to level the series and take four years of work down to the final 80 minutes in Sydney.

But roared on by a monstrous Sea of Red in the third Test, the Lions soared to one of their most comprehensive Test wins ever, dismantling Australia 41-16 to set the seal on the series.  Click here to secure early access for Australia 2025 .

British and Irish Lions Tour of Australia 2025

28 June – 2 August 2025

For the first time in 12 years, The British & Irish Lions Tour will return to Australia for a five-week festival of rugby: 28 June – 2 August 2025.

The 2025 British & Irish Lions tour includes nine high-profile rugby union games played across six Australian cities with tour matches in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and Melbourne and three blockbuster Test Matches against the Wallabies, Australian national rugby union team being played in Brisbane (19 July 2025), Melbourne (26 July 2025) and Sydney (2 August 2025).

In a tradition started in 1888, the British & Irish Lions team (a rugby union side made up of players from the English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh national rugby union teams) now tour to the Southern Hemisphere every four years (rotating between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa).

Australia shares a long history with the British & Irish Lions Tour, with their first-ever rugby test match played against a British Isles side on the Lions’ first tour of Australia in 1889. The Lions last played in Australia in 2013.

In 2025, the British and Irish Lions tour will open with the six tour matches as the Lions take on five of Australia’s Super Rugby teams (Western Force – Perth , 28 June; Queensland Reds – Brisbane , 2 July; New South Wales Waratahs – Sydney , 5 July, ACT Brumbies – Canberra, 9 July and the Melbourne Rebels – Melbourne , 22 July) and a sixth match (Adelaide, 12 July) against an invitational side made up of talented Australian and New Zealand rugby union players – the first combination side of its kind since 1989

A highlight on many rugby union fans’ calendars, the British & Irish Lions Tour is anticipated to draw up to 40,000 international spectators from far and wide. We therefore encourage loyal Lions supporters to get in early to secure their preferred arrangements for their 2025 British & Irish Lions Tour Australian adventures.

This time of year pair perfectly with so many fabulous experiences Down Under, the Southern Hemisphere Winter Months are a perfect time to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef or swim with gentle whale sharks and humpback whales on Australia’s “other” great reef, stargaze in the Outback – or from a hot tub in New Zealand, ski untracked powder in New Zealand’s spectacular Southern Alps or relax on footprint free powdery white beaches in Fiji.

British and Irish Lions to play three Tests on Australian tour in 2025

The British and Irish Lions will play Test matches in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney as they tour Australia in 2025; their visit will include a match-up with a combined Australia-New Zealand team on July 12 for the first time in 34 years.

Wednesday 19 July 2023 08:43, UK

British and Irish Lions

The British and Irish Lions will play a combined Australia-New Zealand team in Adelaide in one of nine matches on their 2025 tour of Australia.

The Lions will face the Wallabies in Test matches at Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney and play all five Australian Super Rugby clubs. And, for the first time since 1989, the Lions will line up against an Anzac XV.

Combining players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the Lions tour either Australia, New Zealand or South Africa every four years.

Accompanied by a famously passionate travelling contingent, the Lions remain one of world rugby's greatest drawcards. They beat Australia 2-1 on their last visit to Australia in 2013. The Wallabies won the 2001 series 2-1, two years after winning the World Cup.

Joe Schmidt reveals how he hopes to rebuild Australia ahead of 2025 British & Irish Lions Tour Down Under

  • Published : 6:05, 2 May 2024
  • Published : Invalid Date,

CONSISTENCY is key for Joe Schmidt as the former Ireland head coach sets about rebuilding the Wallabies ahead of next year’s visit of the Lions.

The ex- Leinster chief replaced Eddie Jones following Australia’s disastrous showing at last year’s World Cup .

Australia national rugby union team coach Joe Schmidt has outline his goals as he takeover the Wallabies

Schmidt, 58, said: “Being competitive one week hasn’t necessarily materialised into being competitive the next.

“Driving that consistency of performance is massively important. You don’t have to be too far off to suddenly not be on the right side of the ledger at the end of the game.

“Being able to nail big moments at the finish has been a challenge for the Wallabies in recent years.

“I’ve had some experiences with teams who haven’t quite nailed those big moments, so it’s trying to build your mindset where you can stay process-driven through those periods with consistency.”
