Welcome to Journey Early Learning Corinda - Inspiring Lifelong Learning!

Journey Early Learning Centre Corinda is a brand new purpose-built early learning child care centre opening in late 2019.  It is located in the heart of Corinda on Oxley Road and conveniently close to Corinda train station. Our Journey Early Learning Centre provides a nurturing environment where children aged from 6 weeks to 6 years of age can make a positive start to a life of learning, development, growth and opportunity.

We are passionate about guiding developmental outcomes and providing a creative environment for children that supports and inspires a lifelong love of learning.

We use the Early Years Learning Framework as a basis for our curriculum and ensure we meet and aim to exceed, the National Quality Standards. We believe by remaining constantly curious, collaborating and communicating with children, educators, families and the wider community, we will achieve the best outcomes for each child.

As food is so much more than just nutrition, we have created Future Foodies: A holistic food program at the heart of our Centre with menus specially developed by an experienced nutritionist. On this base, our qualified, onsite Chef provides fresh, nutritious meals throughout the day, catering for all special dietary needs and requirements.

What’s the role?

This is a Permanent part-time opportunity, located in Corinda. 

This role is perfectly suited to someone who is looking to break into the Childcare Sector, with no prior qualifications. As our new Trainee, you will be supported through a funded Certificate III in Early Education and Care, as you build your foundational experience while working as an active member of our community.

As our new Childcare Trainee Educator, it is your role to develop and maintain meaningful relationships with children, families, colleagues, and the centre community. You will be intrinsically motivated to support and guide children’s learning, while developing your own career and knowledge within the childcare sector. As an Educator, you will be supported by your Centre Leadership Team in your new role, as you learn the fundamental skills of being an inspired Educator within the Journey community.

Your main responsibilities will include:

• Bringing the Journey Values of connection , communication and consideration to life and reflect this in everyday practice.
• Ability to adhere to Journey’s child safe policy and code of conduct
• Assisting with observations of individuals and groups of children
• Assisting in the evaluation of children in terms of individual strengths, weaknesses, interests and preferences, which is then used to design activities to be included in the programme.
• Assisting with the program design, implemented, and evaluated in consultation with others to foster all aspect of children’s development in a holistic way.
• Working as an effective team member and within the defined position description.
• Seek and accept support from your Lead Educators, Educational Leader and Centre Manager

Who are you?

You are creative and child focussed with a passion to lead and develop age specific programs and daily routines. You will work as part of the centre team, building strong relationships with Educators, children, and families.

Key skills and requirements:

• No prior ACECQA recognised qualifications in ECEC
• An approved Working with Children Check (State Specific)
• Current Asthma, Anaphylaxis and First Aid Certificates

Corinda is a multi-talented recording artist, writer, and community leader with an impressive background in her music and publishing endeavors. With two spellings of her last name, she explains that Carford is the Americanized version, and Carfora is her Italian heritage. Her philosophy is to approach each day as a new canvas to create your best life, follow your dreams; and laughter is mandatory.

Well maintained, pristine, genuine, desired,, with a proper set of keys to start me up.”.

A graduate of The University of Miami, Corinda studied music and creative writing then headed to New York where she appeared in several off-Broadway productions, and sang backup vocals for various recording artists.

As in the case of many aspiring artists, in order to pay the rent she worked as a temp and eventually took a full time job with DC Comics.

Several years later she moved on to Simon & Schuster, and then to Penguin, where she worked her way up the corporate ladder to Vice-President.

Knowing the 9 to 5 and office politics were not in her DNA she ventured off to start her own consulting business for book publishers and authors while pursuing her music.

Some of the highlights include singing The National Anthem at Giant Stadium for the World Cup–including the Italian National Anthem- Fratelli D’italia to welcome our international guests, and a special performance at The Bitter End in New York City with “The Original Deliverance Band.”

Her first solo album, Mr. Sandman , included The Pantyhose Song written with college pal, actress and singer-songwriter, Gail Edwards. The song was featured in Allure Magazine , and Listen to Your Heart by Fern Michaels, and made several International Playlists. Her work with The Alliance Singers includes an international hit single, Wayfaring Stranger where she is the lead vocalist.

Over the years she developed a strong clientele in the book world while working on a number of music projects including the remarkable journey with The Alliance Singers, whose work for the good of the community brought great experiences and rewards with icons such as Bruce Springsteen, and Jon Stewart from The Daily Show .

An avid animal lover, Corinda works closely with Animal Care Sanctuary – the largest no-kill shelter in the country.

The Alliance Singers

Joined together by fate, The Alliance Singers came into being from the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Forty-eight hours after that tragic day, local residents gathered and formed The Alliance of Neighbors, an-all volunteer organization to establish emotional and financial support for the families and the community. It was decided that a benefit concert would be the best vehicle, yet there was only weeks to prepare. Music icons Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi were the first to sign up, followed by Felix Cavalieri, John Eddy, Joan Jett, and Kevin Smith – to name a few. While scrambling to cover all the details, co-producer Corinda Carford was faced with another last minute challenge when music director Gary Tallent urged: “We need backup singers for these acts. I know you can sing so see if you can pull 10 more people together for rehearsal – for the day after tomorrow.” Slightly panicked, Carford ran to the first place she thought of: The Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she pleaded with musical director Jesse Moorer to “gather some voices (and they have to sound good with me!) And be at my house tomorrow night at 7:00.” This was to be the first meeting of many.

As promised, the singers appeared and raised their voices in harmony for the various performers of the concert and became what is now known as The Alliance Singers. The group went on to contribute on the Grammy Award winning The Rising by Bruce Springsteen, as well as The Essential Springsteen , and Wrecking Ball .

More concerts and television appearances followed, including Today on NBC, and creating laughter on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart .

Eventually they cut a CD single, Wayfaring Stranger which went on to reach the top 100 on the International Gospel Train Music Chart .

Each new experience was unique and always a surprise, which goes to show that you just never know.

The Pantyhose Song

The Pantyhose Song by Corinda Carfora & Gail Edwards

It was the month of December. I had spent a week in Puerto Rico at a conference and returned to New Jersey. The day after I got home I changed suitcases, headed back to the airport and boarded a plane to Sedona, Arizona to spend some time with my bestie from college, the talented Gail Edwards. While in-flight, I was thinking about what I had packed and hoped it was seasonally appropriate. Going from 92 degrees to 28 degrees in 48 hours required a drastic change in clothing. I had packed my Arizona suitcase before my trip to Puerto Rico and was trying to recall what was in the luggage. The first thing that came to mind was “No Pantyhose! Yay!” It was a long flight and I began to amuse myself my writing some lyrics on a cocktail napkin–Yes, people really do that! The first line was “I’m getting rid of all my pantyhose, and all those high-heels with the pointy toes. I’m gonna find myself some comfortable clothes, I’m getting rid of all my pantyhose!”

Once I got settled in, Gail and I went for a drive to see some of the incredible Red Rocks. I reached into my pocket and pulled out the crumpled napkin and started singing it to her. Being a fellow songstress–we met at the University of Miami School of Music–she added the second phrase. By the time we got back to her place we had written most of it and were giddy with delight. We dragged her unsuspecting husband-the very talented Robert Decker-into the living room and handed him his guitar. The rest–as they say–is history–and a funny commentary on fashion.

The song and lyrics were featured in Allure Magazine , with other country inspired songs along the same line, such as Did I Shave My Legs for This? by Deana Carter. It was the beginning of a not-so-quiet rebellion asking: “Who decided what I’m supposed to wear?”

Around the same time I was recording an album in Nashville and ran it past my producer Mick Lloyd, who was skeptical but also intrigued and we decided to include it on my CD, Mr. Sandman . Several songs from the album–yes, they still call it that–made the International Country Music Charts , including The Pantyhose Song .

The kitchy lyrics caught the attention of New York Times Best Selling Author, Fern Michaels, who included the lyrics in her novel Listen to Your Heart , which also contained a CD single of the song in the back of the book.

Recently we were approached by an innovative artist and teacher, Katie Truk, who uses pantyhose as her medium. I am delighted to share some of her brilliant work–and use of pantyhose–on the top of the page. Please visit her site: www.katietruk.com

Western Monarchs Update

This year monarchs are navigating a series of weather-related roller coasters as they continue their journey to the summer breeding grounds. Warm, sunny days have alternated with waves of intense storms last month followed by cold temperatures and back to balmy weather. Despite the many obstacles, monarchs are continuing to move and slowly stretch their range from the coast and often to finding milkweed up and waiting.

Recent Monarch Sightings

During the last month, monarch sightings of adults and larvae were reported in the southern and western half of California and the deserts of Arizona. Recently they stretched more inland outside of Sacramento, California.

Lynda in Litchfield Park, Arizona, west of Phoenix, noticed several monarchs in March. “Have seen Monarch(s) several times in the last week. This was the first opportunity I’ve had to try to get a photo.” 

Meanwhile, Thomas saw a monarch laying eggs on six desert milkweeds [ A. subulata ] in Cathedral City in the Sonoran Desert region of California in mid-March. Then two weeks later on March 29, he reported, “9 larvae sighted on 6 desert milkweed plants, 1”-1.5” in length.” 

In Bakersfield in the Central Valley of California, Heidi reported a monarch flying above a yellow flowering lantana. 

Just outside of Sacramento in Placerville, Pamela saw a monarch near the edge of Finnon Lake in Mosquito on April 3.  

More recently Lindsay spotted a monarch in Yuma, Arizona , on April 20.

Not all monarch sightings were in the desert! In fact, Heidi had a surprise visiting Santa Catalina Island . On March 29, “I saw one adult monarch flying over the beach in Avalon.” 

In southern California, Judy in Oceanside found one monarch on April 3 in her yard. “Beautiful, bright color, very active, stopped and stayed on milkweed plants for a few seconds numerous times.”

Reports of large numbers of monarchs in one location are unusual in spring, but Joyce reported multiple monarchs in Mountain View on March 31. “We saw 18 monarchs at Google today enjoying the sunny afternoon. Most were circling about or sunning themselves. Most were quite faded and tattered like this one. Not much color left and the wings were shredded but he flew like a champ. There is not much milkweed in the area anymore as they don’t appear to be planting anymore here.”

Other monarchs are likely migrating in more remote areas and we are looking forward to your sightings as they arrive. We are hopeful to see a few milkweeds up to greet monarchs as they arrive.

Diane in San Luis Obispo, California , was excited to report on April 1, “Native milkweed is just beginning to sprout.” 

Meanwhile, further north, Breanna in Pleasant Hill noticed, “Common Milkweed sprouts from transplanted rhizomes last Fall from a friend.” 

Our furthest north milkweed report came from Greg in Benton City, Washington , who found Showy Milkweed just breaking ground on April 3.

Sometimes monarchs can race through the fields faster than where the milkweed is up. This week we heard there was a possible monarch sighted in Medford, Oregon. While this sighting was not sent to Journey North for our confirmation, it did spur concern about the availability of milkweed from some experts in the field. This would be a very early monarch sighting for Oregon. In fact, you may remember Dr. David James often shared his report from the Trinity River in northern California over Memorial Day weekend nearly a month away south of Oregon. If monarchs are racing this year and outrun the milkweed up, they run the risk of laying many eggs on small shoots that may be unable to successfully feed the day and night hunger spree of large fifth instar larvae.

Dr. Tom Landis in Oregon has been following milkweed in the Northwest and contemplated the possibilities. “The concern is the problem of phenological mismatch. When monarchs migrate north earlier than usual, there’s a danger if they would find milkweeds to lay eggs on.” Several years ago, in 2015, he heard of a female monarch “do an egg dump on the shoots of showy milkweed that were just emerging.” So, we reached out to Linda Kappen, also in Oregon, to see what milkweeds she’s seen around the area. “I hope I have assured you that far Northern California and southern Oregon have plenty of milkweed for migrating north. I have confirmed that Heartleaf is going strong in the foothills, home gardens, and wild milkweeds as well. We as a group have done outreach for many years and some of our neighbors in Douglas County and farther counties to the north of us have much milkweed growing as well, so hopefully, they can continue north. Happy Earth Day!” The news sounds hopeful for monarchs to expand their numbers as they continue their journey north to their summer breeding grounds. Monarch sightings are usually sparse this time of year as they lay eggs increasing the population on their migration to the summer breeding grounds. Ciara Teases Weight Loss Progress With Scale Photo After Revealing Goal to Drop 70 Lbs

Ciara teased the progress she’s made in her weight loss journey while sharing a life update via Instagram .

“Lil Dump … the last slide is life🫶🏽🍓,” the singer, 38, captioned a slideshow of pics on Thursday, April 25, showing herself hanging out with family and friends. Along with photos of Ciara spending time outside and in the recording studio, she included a picture of a scale.

Ciara announced earlier this month that she planned to drop weight after welcoming her fourth baby. She shares Sienna, 6, Win, 3, and Amora, 4 months, with husband Russell Wilson , whom she wed in 2016. Ciara previously welcomed son Future Zahir, 9, with ex-fiancé Future .

“Trying to lose 70lbs post baby, prepare for a show and tour while breastfeeding, and running my businesses,” she wrote via Instagram on April 13, posing in a Nike hoodie with the phrase “tough s—t” on it. “Shout out to all my mammas out there gettin in, I see you! ToughSh$t. #MambaMentality🐍.”

Ciara received support from her celebrity pals in the comments section, with Holly Robinson Peete writing, “If anyone can it’s you.” Busta Rhymes left several crown emojis underneath the post, while Gabrielle Union added flexed biceps emojis.

Ciara and Wilson, 35, announced in August 2023 that they were expanding their family . The “Level Up” singer went on to rock her baby bump at several public events, including one of her husband’s NFL games in October 2023.

“I love you so much. #3 💙🧡🤍,” she captioned Instagram pics of them posing on a football field. (Wilson was traded from the Denver Broncos to the Pittsburgh Steelers last month.)

Two months later, Ciara covered her baby bump with gorgeous gold leaf glitter at the Los Angeles premiere of her film The Color Purple . The detailing complemented her all-white ensemble, which included a button-up shirt, dress pants and a flowing white cape.

She strutted around in a plunging black leather trench coat and matching black leather thigh-high boots in a January Instagram video, writing, “I still got the juice boo, buy a sippie! 💅🏽.”

She also encouraged fans to “embrace every stage of life” while sporting a maroon short-sleeved one-piece swimsuit on a pool deck in a February Instagram video. She completed the look with flowing long locks and a drink in her hand.
