QuikTrip Gas Station Coffee Review

kwik trip decaf coffee

by Lars Hundley

Lately I’ve been visiting gas stations near me that ranked highly in GasBuddy’s rankings of best gas station coffee by state. Turns out there was a QuikTrip gas station just a mile and a half from my workplace, so I stopped by yesterday after work to buy a coffee. (Some people also refer to it as the QT gas station.)

After seeing Racetrac’s amazing Swiss machines that grind and brew individual cups , I was curious to see what kind of system QuikTrip used. The first thing I learned was that QuikTrip has so many different self serve coffee options that it’s a little bit overwhelming. The photo at the top is just the options for hot brewed coffee. They have different machines for things like lattes.

I went with a small Original coffee, because I had similarly chosen a default plain black coffee option on my Racetrac visit. You can’t hide your coffee quality with plain black coffee like you can by adding a lot of milk and sugar and flavoring, and the point of these reviews is the coffee more than the other coffee drinks.

Other choices were Panamanian, 100 Percent Columbian Excelso, Vienna Roast (a medium / dark roast), and Decaf.

Unlike Racetrac, which grinds and brews your coffee right in front of you when you press the button, QuikTrip brews their coffee in large gallon batches. I took a look at the machines, and they are the very respectable Bunn commercial brewers. Specifically, they are using the Bunn Dual Soft Heat DBC machines with a lower faucet.

The real question for me was whether the QuikTrip coffee would be hot and if it would taste fresh. I was getting my coffee at around 4 p.m. How long had it been there? How often do they change it out and brew more? Do they wait until it’s empty, or do they throw it out after a certain number of hours? These are questions that I’m going to reach out to QuikTrip with to get a better idea of how they brew and store it.

But here’s the good news. The coffee was a correct and very hot temperature, and it tasted fresh. There was no burned taste, and no stale or excessively bitter taste. The Original coffee was high quality, and I enjoyed it plain and black with no sugar or milk added.

A small coffee is about the size of a Starbucks grande, and cost just $1.49 plus sales tax. I plan to go back and collect the information for all the other QT cup sizes and prices.

If you’re here because you wanted to know about QT iced coffee or frozen coffee options, then here’s what you’ll find at QuikTrip. The frozen coffee machines are also manufactured by Bunn, and the four options are Frozen Cappuccino, Frozen Hot Chocolate (huh?), Frozen Caramel Latte and Frozen Horchata.

But wait, there are even more options! If you want a milky type of hot coffee, QuikTrip has you covered there too.

The options for hot coffee types of drinks include Vanilla Chai Latte (limited time), Original Hot Chocolate, Hot Chocolate Caramel Sugar Free Cappuccino, Almond Amaretto Cappuccino, French Vanilla Cappuccino, French Vanilla Fat Free Cappuccino, Caramel Macchiato Cappuccino and Mighty Mocha Cappucino.

I should point out that all of these hot drinks are going to be super sweet and sugary (a few are sugar free, but still super sweetened). So if you’re expecting a plain, regular cappuccino or latte from QuikTrip, you aren’t going to find it here.

From Big Buddy to Karuba cups, here's how to navigate Kwik Trip's self-serve drink section

Kwik Trip has a pretty expansive self-serve drink station, offering beverages ranging from milkshakes and slushies to iced coffees and hot Americanos. With so many machines, each with a different use, serving a different drink, it can be pretty easy to get confused on what's what or what cups are used with which machine.

Maybe you just want a simple, traditionally brewed coffee and can't seem to find them amongst the Karuba coffees, or maybe you're feeling adventurous and want to switch up your morning latte flavor but can't seem to find the machine that can do just that.

Regardless of if you're a Kwik Trip regular or you barely visit the chain gas station and convenience store, chances are you haven't used every self-serving drink machine they have.

Here's a list of all the drink machines you can find in any Kwik Trip location and what they do.

Slushie Machine, $1.29-$1.99

The self-serve slushie machines are for those looking for a quick, cold, sweet beverage. While flavors can differ depending on the day and location, customers are able to choose between "Blue Moon Frost," "Lime Chill," "Polar Punch," and "Orange Breeze" flavors. The slushies are made with purchasable gallon juices, which are usually located next to the slushies. Any of the "Buddy" cups can be used for these drinks.

Buddy cup sizes include:

Little Buddy, 20 ounces

Big Buddy, 30 ounces

Best Buddy, 40 ounces

Mega Buddy, 50 ounces

F'Real machine, $3.99

F'real blenders are customer-operated machines used to make frozen treats out of the pre-made cups that accompany the machine. Customers can choose from any of the nine milkshake flavors or three fruit smoothie flavors. Remove the lid, place the 10-ounce cup into the F'real blender, choose the level of thickness you'd like your treat to be and press start. In less than a minute, the machine produces a perfectly blended frozen drink. Flavors include Oreo cookies and cream, strawberry shortcake, fudge brownie batter, Snickers, cotton candy and more. There are over 20,000 F'real machine locations across the U.S. and one can be found in most Kwik Trips.

Fresh Blends machine, $2.49-$3.99

The Fresh Blends machine is another self-serving frozen beverage machine. Customers choose either a 12-, 16- or 20-ounce Fresh Blends cup, place it into the machine and use the touch screen to navigate your drink choice. There are nine drink categories, each with their own flavors. The machine can make fruit smoothies, chocolate shakes, frozen lemonades, frappes, fruit shakes, juice refreshers, cold brew coffee shakes, iced cold brew lattes and iced lemonades. Once you choose your drink and flavor, the machine handles the rest, producing a frozen drink in under a minute and even self-cleaning afterwards.

Karuba Nitro coffee machine, $1.29-$9.99

This coffee machine is specifically for cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas. The gas creates small bubbles in the coffee that produces a signature thick and creamy texture. Customers can choose either the regular cold brew flavor or the French vanilla iced latte. Any of the heat-safe Karuba coffee cups can be used for this machine. Karuba cups come in 12-, 16-, 20-, and 24-ounce sizes. A coffee-to-go size, 96 ounces, is also offered.

Bean2Cup machine, $1.29-$9.99

This simple coffee machine is where customers can get quick, freshly brewed hot or iced Karuba coffee. Flavors include house, hazelnut and Columbian for both hot and iced coffees. Simply choose your Karuba cup size, place it under the drink dispenser and use the touchscreen on the machine to choose which coffee you'd like to enjoy.

Drip coffee machine, $1.29-$9.99

These are traditionally brewed coffees out of a drip coffee machine. While flavors differ depending on the day and season, customers can usually choose from the house blend, Columbian or Kona dark roast. This season's limited time flavor is toasted coconut caramel cream. Choose your drink size, pick your hot coffee of choice and dispense it into your heat-safe Karuba cup. Sugars, syrups, chilled and regular creamers are provided for no extra costs for customization.

Cappuccino and hot cocoa machine, $1.29-$1.79

This machine is for customers looking for a quick, hot and sweet drink. The cappuccino flavors differ depending on the day and location but customers can usually choose from white chocolate caramel, French vanilla, English toffee and more. The machine usually has an option for hot cocoa as well. Choose a heat-safe cup of any size, place it under whichever flavor you'd like and press and hold the button to dispense the drink.

Karuba Gold machine, $1.29-$9.99

The Karuba gold machine is used to make various flavored lattes, mochas, Americanos and hot chocolate, either hot or iced. Customers can add vanilla or caramel to any of the lattes, mochas and Americanos as well as steamed milk with the push of a button. Choose the appropriate Karuba cup and size of your choice, place it under the drink dispenser and use the touch screen to navigate what drink and flavor you would like.

Tea Brewers, $1.29-$1.99

Customers can choose a heat-safe Karuba cup of choice and any of the individual tea bags offered. Simply dispense the hot water into the cup and steep your tea bag. Sugars and other drink additions are available for no cost for customization.

Fountain drink machine, $1.29-$1.99

This is where customers can find the usual sodas and beverages that are not canned or bottled. Kwik Trip carries Pepsi and Coke products in its soda machines, meaning customers can choose from Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, 7UP, Mountain Dew, Coke, Arizona Arnold Palmer, Brisk tea and similar drinks. Some machines even offer flavor shots that can be added to drinks for extra taste. Use any of the "Buddy" drink cups and fill it up with your beverage of choice.

Want All the Flavor but None of the Caffeine? We Tasted the Best Decaf Coffees

From espresso to organic to instant, we found the top options

kwik trip decaf coffee

The Spruce Eats / Amelia Manley

Some coffee lovers rely on decaf as their daily source of joe. Others keep it around for occasional use, like when an afternoon coffee urge arises but you still want to fall asleep at a reasonable hour. Unfortunately, it's tricky to find decaf coffee that tastes like "the real thing." Certain decaffeination processes remove key coffee flavors, often resulting in a lackluster bag of beans. That's why we've rounded up several of the strongest, tastiest decaf coffees available today. We even included picks in different roasts, prices, and forms like whole bean and K-Cup. For delicious coffee without the jitters, here are the best decaf coffees.

  • How We Tested Decaf Coffee

We purchased 16 types of decaf coffee and performed a taste test in our Lab. To create the most accurate assessment, we rated each coffee in five categories: flavor, acidity, body, sweetness, and balance. Then we added up all of the points and the highest-rated decaf coffees made the list below. We also described what each coffee tasted like to provide a more vivid picture than what ratings alone can capture.

  • What to Look for

Why Trust The Spruce Eats?

Best overall, counter culture coffee slow motion decaf blend.

Counter Culture's Slow Motion Decaf was the highest-rated coffee in our taste test. We found the flavor to be more vibrant and complex than a normal medium roast. It's smooth and sweet overall, but there's a lot of acidity from the notes of stone fruit too, which brings a unique element to the coffee. Despite this, we never found the coffee to be overly tart.

Slow Motion is sold in three sizes—12, 24, and 80 ounces—and it's possible to find it in grocery stores depending on where you live. Otherwise, it's easy to order online. Counter Culture uses the Swiss Water Process to decaffeinate the beans, which come from a rotating blend of countries to ensure the freshest quality. Counter Culture coffee is, by and large, on the more expensive end, but prices are consistent with other specialty roasters.

Roast: Medium | Size: 12, 24, or 80 ounces | Available In: Whole bean, ground, and single-serve packets | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Best Dark Roast

Jo coffee no fun jo decaf.

Dark roast lovers trying to ditch caffeine would be hard-pressed to find a better option than Jo Coffee. Its decaf blend combines notes of sweet blueberry and milk chocolate for a rich flavor you can’t resist.

No Fun Jo uses the Swiss Water Process to decaffeinate its coffee, which leaves the beans with a more complex flavor. The coffee is also fair-trade certified and certified organic. The decaf blend is available in both whole bean and ground, and you can choose between a 12-ounce bag, a 2-pound bag, and coffee pods. The price for a 12-ounce bag of beans is about what you would expect to pay; a little more than a grocery-store brand but cheaper than a specialty roaster.

Roast: Medium-dark | Size: 12 ounces or 2 pounds | Available In: Whole bean, ground, and K-Cup | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Best Medium Roast

Stumptown coffee roasters trapper creek decaf blend.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Every coffee lover wants decaf to taste like the real thing, and Stumptown is up to the challenge with its Trapper Creek blend. It's a medium roast with a palatable but unique flavor profile, so it should appeal to a wide range of people. We detected notes of cherry and milk chocolate with an undertone of honey. There's also a good mix of acidity which provides balance to every sip. Stumptown uses the Swiss Water Process to decaffeinate the coffee, which is generally the most popular and trusted method.

Trapper Creek is available in bags of two sizes, 12 ounces or 5 pounds. It's more expensive than, say, a grocery store brand, but we think it's reasonably priced given the quality. Make sure you have a trusty grinder at home, though, as the coffee is only sold as whole bean.

Roast: Medium | Size: 12 or 80 ounces | Available In: Whole bean | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Best Light Roast

Cafe don pablo light roast decaf.

Courtesy of Amazon

Lighter roasts often leave more room for coffee beans to have unique flavors. The longer that coffee roasts, you tend to taste exactly that: the roasted smokiness emblematic of French and Italian roasts . While those can be delicious too, it's nice to mix things up every once in a while, like with Café Don Pablo's Colombian Decaf. Colombian coffee is usually sold as a medium roast, but these beans are roasted for a shorter time and at a lower temperature. You'll find caramel, cocoa, and citrus notes in each sip, plus an overall smooth finish.

One small downside is that the decaf option is not easy to find in the 12-ounce size, so you may have to get 2 or 5 pounds of coffee at once. Customers say that the coffee is consistently fresh, however, even in the larger size options.

Roast: Light roast (also available in medium-dark roast) | Size: 12, 32, or 80 ounces | Available In: Whole bean and ground | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Best Budget

Kicking horse decaf dark roast coffee.

Kicking Horse Coffee is priced a little higher than brands like Folger's and Maxwell House, but we think it hits the perfect balance of cost and quality. It's the kind of coffee you can afford to buy every week and never tire of drinking. This decaf blend is a dark roast that's rich, robust, and flavorful. You'll find notes of roasted hazelnuts and milk chocolate in every sip. Our only knock is that the coffee can taste slightly bitter, but we still found each cup enjoyable overall.

Kicking Horse is certified organic and fair trade and roasts all of its beans right at home in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It's easy to find both in-store and online. Plus, you can choose between a 10-ounce bag or a 2.2-pound bag.

Roast: Dark | Size: 10 ounces or 2.2 pounds | Available In: Whole bean | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Best Espresso

Lavazza dek decaf coffee.

Lavazza's Dek Decaf Espresso opens the door for tasty, jitter-free shots of espresso , along with decaf lattes and cappuccinos for customers with a milk frother at home. The blend is a medium roast with Arabica beans sourced from Brazil and Vietnam. Its two main flavor notes are hazelnut and roasted cereal, making it smoother and generally more palatable than the dark roasts that are usually used for espresso. As long as your espresso maker is up to the task, these beans can yield a rich crema that adds to the overall body and mouthfeel of an espresso shot.

The Dek Decaf Espresso is sold in 17.5-ounce bags of whole bean coffee, 8-ounce bags of pre-ground coffee, as well as two different pod options. Prices vary depending on the retailer, but it tends to drift toward the more expensive end, at least compared to standard grocery store varieties.

Roast: Medium | Size: 17.5 ounces | Available In: Whole bean, ground, Blue System pods, and E.S.E. pods | Decaffeination Process: CO2 Process

Best Splurge

Volcanica coffee company house decaf coffee.

As the name suggests, Volcanica Coffee Company uses the high elevations and rich soil of volcanic mountains to create delicious coffee. Its beans are sourced from countries all across the world, then roasted in Volcanica's home city of Atlanta, Georgia. The brand also uses the Swiss Water method , which removes caffeine with as few chemicals as possible, all while retaining the bean’s flavor palette.

Volcanica makes a number of tasty caffeinated blends, but it especially stands out for making more than a dozen decaf options, including this House Blend. Expect this coffee to contain the traditional balance of a medium roast but with an undercurrent of sweetness. Those looking for alternative flavors can try Volcanica's popular Costa Rican Decaf and Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Decaf.

Roast: Medium | Size: 16 or 80 ounces | Available In: Whole bean and ground | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Best Instant

Mount hagen organic freeze dried instant decaf coffee.

Mount Hagen Decaf Instant Coffee is organic, fair trade, and downright tasty. Customers describe instant coffee as a well-balanced medium roast, one that’s surprisingly strong but not too acidic.

You can purchase the product in a 3.53-ounce jar or a box of individually packaged servings, the latter of which is ideal for coffee drinkers who are often traveling or constantly on the go. One note: You won't be able to control the strength of your brew as easily if you're using a single-serve packet, so if you like a big cup of coffee or prefer a stronger brew, go for the jar.

Roast: Medium | Size: 3.53-ounce jar or box of 25 single-serve sticks | Available In: Instant | Decaffeination Process: CO2 Process

Best K-Cups

The original donut shop decaf medium roast k-cup pods.

Available in-store and online at various big-name retailers, The Original Donut Shop is a favorite among Keurig owners , beloved by many for providing quick cups of top-grade coffee. Take that same great coffee, subtract the caffeine, and you get the best decaf coffee pods on the market.

Smooth and flavorful, The Original Donut Shop makes its decaf roast extra bold, packing in even more Arabica beans than in its regular coffee. And even though taste buds vary and coffee preferences can be polarizing, this product has received widespread praise for being just as full-bodied as regular coffee.

Roast: Medium | Size: 6, 12, 24, 72, or 96 pods | Available In: K-Cup | Decaffeination Process: Proprietary information

Best Half-Caffeinated

Stone street coffee company mayan water half-caff.

"Half-caff" refers to a mix of regularly caffeinated beans and decaffeinated beans, resulting in a coffee with half the typical amount of caffeine. It's a wonderful option for people in the process of weening off caffeine or those who like a little pep in their brew but not the full jolt.

Stone Street Coffee Company makes a high-quality iteration with its Mayan Water Half-Caff. This medium roast is easy to sip at any time of day, which also makes it an option for coffee lovers who end up drinking a cup close to bedtime. It's available in three sizes—1, 2, and 5 pounds—as well as whole bean or pre-ground bags. If ordering directly from Stone Street's site, customers have the option to select the grind size that best suits their brewing device, from fine ground to coarse. One of the only downsides of the Mayan Water Half-Caff is that it's on the more expensive end.

Roast: Dark | Size: 16, 32, or 80 ounces | Available In: Whole bean and ground | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Best Single-Origin

Dogstreet roasting company peru decaf.

The phrase "single origin" is applied to coffee when the beans used for it all come from the same area. Sometimes that means one country; other times it means a single farm, which is preferred within the specialty coffee community. Put simply: the more specific an area that coffee beans come from, the more likely it is that they have a unified and pure flavor.

Dogstreet Roasting Company's Decaf Peru can be traced to one of three farms in Piura, Peru, and that origin comes through in the taste. This medium roast balances smooth notes of milk chocolate and caramel with an undertone of citrus. The author of this article received a sample of the Peru Decaf for testing purposes and was impressed from the very first sip.

Bags can be purchased in sizes ranging from 12 ounces up to a whopping 12 pounds. It can also be ordered pre-ground in a medium or fine grind or, for the freshest results, whole bean. The best part? For every bag sold, the brand donates $1 to help stray and abandoned dogs.

Roast: Medium | Size: 12, 16, 32, 80, or 192 ounces | Available In: Whole bean and ground | Decaffeination Process: Swiss Water Process

Counter Culture brings its signature strong quality to the Slow Motion Decaf , making it our favorite all-around pick. It's an easy-to-drink medium roast with a little extra sweetness and clarity. For a darker decaf option, check out Jo Coffee's No Fun Jo Decaf.

What to Look for in a Decaf Coffee

Decaffeination method.

Not all decaf coffee is made the same way. There are several different decaffeination methods, each of which leads to subtle differences when the coffee reaches your cup. Perhaps the most common method is water processing (often referred to as Swiss-water decaf). The newest one on the block is the CO2 process, where liquid carbon dioxide is pressurized into coffee beans. There is no clear-cut best method, unfortunately, but once you find one you like it's worth sticking with it.

"I'd avoid decaf that doesn't specify the decaffeination method used," Maryna Gray , the Director of Coffee at Bean Box told us. "Specialty roasters like bragging about their product—if it uses a higher quality method, it will likely be made clear on the packaging or description."

 Tasting Notes

Identifying the type of roast you like—light, medium, or dark—is a great place to start when trying a new coffee. But it can get even trickier than that. Keep an eye out for a blend's tasting notes, usually written somewhere on the bag. With a dark roast, for instance, you might like one that has notes of chocolate but not notes of smokiness, or vice versa.

There is generally little difference in price between decaf coffee and regular, but it's still a key consideration since the majority of coffee drinkers have a cup (or three) every single day. Try experimenting with different brands to find your cost comfort zone. See if you have a preference between a $5 bag of beans and a $20 bag. Just because a coffee is more expensive doesn't mean it's the best one for your taste buds.

Does decaf coffee have caffeine?

Most decaf coffee contains a small amount of caffeine. Sometimes it's as little as 2 milligrams per cup, while other options can have up to 18 milligrams of caffeine. In comparison, a cup of regular coffee has around 100 milligrams of caffeine on average. Coffee beans naturally contain caffeine, so it's difficult to remove all traces of it, especially without ruining the taste. So roasters generally remove about 97 percent of the caffeine from coffee during the decaffeination process. If you are looking for a beverage that's entirely caffeine-free, you may want to consider coffee alternatives like chicory coffee , turmeric lattes , and more. However, many decaf coffees are still low enough in caffeine to help you avoid the jitters and find a different experience than drinking regularly caffeinated coffee.

How is decaf coffee made?

There are four main ways to decaffeinate coffee beans:

Water Process: The newest and most popular methods are categorized as "Water Processes." The foremost example of this is the Swiss Water Process, followed by the less common Mountain Water Process. They are both solvent-free methods that remove up to 99.9 percent of caffeine. First, raw coffee beans are soaked in hot water to remove caffeine and create a "Green Coffee Extract" or GCE. The GCE then passes through a carbon filter to take out the caffeine and is recirculated around a new batch of raw coffee beans for several hours to infuse them with oils and flavor but not caffeine. After that, the beans are dried, roasted, and ready to brew. "While Swiss Water Process is largely what you'll find in specialty coffee," Gray said. "Mountain Water Process is very similar, and the EA or Sugarcane Process—mostly found in Colombian coffees—is also great."

CO2 Process: Another solvent-free method is the CO2 process. Raw coffee beans are soaked in water and blasted with liquid CO2 that binds to the caffeine molecules in the beans. The CO2 is then removed with carbon filters, taking the caffeine with it. The CO2 process is less common than the Swiss Water Process, however.

Direct-Solvent Method: Next, there's the direct-solvent method. In this process, raw beans are treated with a solvent—either methylene chloride or ethyl acetate—that binds to the caffeine. When the beans are roasted, both the solvent and the caffeine burn off. This is the oldest way to decaffeinate coffee beans and it remains common today. Depending on the chemicals used, it may be referred to as the "Sugarcane Method."

Indirect-Solvent Method: Finally, there's the indirect-solvent method. Raw coffee beans are soaked in hot water to remove caffeine as well as oils and flavor. The beans are then separated from the water and washed for several hours with either methylene chloride or ethyl acetate. Just like in the direct method, the solvent binds to the caffeine molecules, then it's heated to evaporate the solvent and about 97 percent of the caffeine. Lastly, the beans are soaked in the initial liquid so they can reabsorb the oils and flavor.

Do decaf and caffeinated coffee taste different?

While there's no set answer to this question, you may find that decaf coffee tastes slightly different from caffeinated coffee, even if it's the same blend from the same brand. There are a few reasons for this. First, certain decaffeination processes alter the oils and flavors found in coffee beans. Gray added that it's rare (albeit possible) for the decaffeination method to enhance flavor. Another reason for the difference in taste is that roasters don't always use their highest-quality beans for decaf coffee. Finally, Maryna told us that "some of the most piquant and fruit-forward coffees, Africans like Ethiopians or Kenyans, are also rarely seen as decafs. Most decafs will be Central or South American coffees, just because of proximity to the decaf facilities."

All that said, even trained taste buds can have a hard time noticing a difference between decaf and caffeinated coffee. There's also decaf out there that tastes even better than some caffeinated coffee. "A high-end decaf, roasted with love and brewed fresh?" Maryna said. "These decafs can absolutely bring a level of flavor and nuance that will stand toe-to-toe with other artisan beans." It all boils down to personal preference and, luckily, there's plenty of tasty decaf options from which to choose.

Does decaf espresso exist?

We often think of espresso as little shots of caffeine that keep us buzzing throughout the day, but decaf espresso does exist, and it's no different than decaf coffee. After all, any coffee bean can be used for espresso; some beans are just better suited for espresso than others. Decaf espresso beans are decaffeinated through one of the same processes we detailed above. We also included a coffee that's best for decaf espresso on this list.

How does it compare to the real thing? "If treated well by an experienced barista, decaf coffee blends can make excellent espresso drinks," Gray says. "Many of the coffee flavors you'd miss in decaf—the lighter, fruitier notes—aren't as compatible with milk-based drinks anyway."

After Tasting 15 Decaf Coffees, We Found Five We Love

Our favorites were from Counter Culture Coffee, Stumptown, Onyx Coffee Lab, and Peet’s Coffee.

Serious Eats / Jesse Raub

Straight to the Point

Our favorite decaf coffee was Counter Culture Coffee’s Slow Motion Decaf Blend , which had the best balance between body, acidity, and sweetness. We also really liked Stumptown’s Coffee Roasters Trapper Creek Decaf Blend as another great medium roast.

When I worked at coffee roasting companies, we always made our decaf blends a top priority. A lot of coffee drinkers grab a morning cup for their caffeine hit, but decaf drinkers are in it solely for the pleasure of drinking coffee. At the same time, the decaffeination process (which happens before roasting) can greatly affect the flavor potential of a coffee, making great-tasting decaf a difficult undertaking.

There are many different ways you can decaffeinate coffee, but all of them start with boiling or steaming the unroasted coffee to open up the coffee’s pores and extract the caffeine. Caffeine is then removed from the water bath using a solvent (like methylene chloride or ethyl acetate ), or the water is run through special filters or osmosis for the Swiss Water Process . Ethyl acetate, Swiss Water Process, and other water process coffees are usually preferred by specialty coffee roasters for having the least impact on a coffee’s flavor, but we wanted to put everything to the test (and include a variety of price points). To that end, we rounded up 15 decaf coffees from specialty roasters and the grocery store to see which decaf had the best flavor, acidity, body, sweetness, and balance.

The Winners, at a Glance

The best decaf coffee, counter culture coffee slow motion decaf blend.

Counter Culture’s Slow Motion was an excellent decaf coffee and won both of our taste tests outright with fantastic flavor clarity. Its medium roast had a great sweetness, pleasant acidity, and a full body with flavors of dark chocolate, cherry, and almond.

Another Great Medium Roast Decaf Coffee

Stumptown coffee roasters trapper creek decaf blend.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

If you prefer a medium roast but also like a more fruit-forward profile, Stumptown’s Trapper Creek had an orange-like acidity balanced with milk chocolate and honey sweetness. It was also a well-balanced blend, with a medium, velvety body.

The Best Light Roast Decaf Coffee

Onyx coffee lab decaf colombia huila.

Onyx Coffee Lab

Onyx’s Decaf Colombia Huila impressed us with its bright flavors of berries, tangerine, and honey. Its lighter roast showed off its flavor complexity with a lighter, silky body, but it still had a great sweetness to balance its fruit-forward acidity. (Note: The coffee we tested appears to be unavailable, but Onyx has this decaf option .)

The Best Dark Roast Decaf Coffee

Peet’s coffee decaf big bang blend.

Peet’s Coffee

With big sweetness and a clean finish, Peet’s Big Bang Blend was our favorite dark roast. It had smoky flavors of cocoa powder, caramel, and praline, with a mild apple-like acidity that helped balance its full, round body.

Another Great Dark Roast Decaf Coffee

Peace coffee roasters morning glory blend.

Peace Coffee

Another great darker roast, Peace’s Morning Glory Blend had a bittersweet edge to it, with walnut, milk chocolate, and dark caramel flavors. We really liked its full and velvety body, which helped anchor its sweet flavors.

  • Double Blind Cupping Test: We tasted each coffee during double-blind cupping, which is a standard protocol for coffee tasting . We followed the Specialty Coffee Association’s Cupping Protocol . We then evaluated each coffee using the SCA’s Cupping Form , scoring each coffee’s flavor, acidity, body, sweetness, and balance.
  • Drip Brewer Test: We brewed each coffee using a Ratio Six Coffee Maker (which is a SCA Certified Home Brewer ) and following their Gold Cup Ratios and brewing standards. We then evaluated each coffee using the SCA’s Cupping Form , scoring each coffee’s flavor, acidity, body, sweetness, and balance.

What We Learned

Evaluating coffee required multiple brew methods.

Cupping is a great way of tasting coffee because you can brew every coffee the exact same way at the same time for easier comparison. Because the grounds sit and brew in the glass the entire time, it’s a great way to extract everything from a coffee so you get a full perspective on its flavor profile. Brewing with a paper filter, however, helps clean up each coffee’s flavor profile and is a better representation of how people will taste the same coffee at home. By using both brew methods in our coffee evaluation, we were able to make sure our winning coffees were truly excellent.

The Best Coffees Tasted Great No Matter How We Brewed Them

Our top picks consistently came out on top in both our cupping and brewing tests. We thought Counter Culture Coffee’s Slow Motion Decaf Blend and Onyx Coffee Lab’s Decaf Colombia Huila were both really delicious no matter how we brewed them. Other coffees were less consistent. La Colombe’s Luna Azul Decaf was harsh and bitter during the cupping, but showed more sweetness and balance when it was brewed. Kicking Horse Coffee Decaf Blend was the opposite: on the cupping table we thought it had a nice sweetness, but once brewed, it showed burnt, woody flavors that were unpleasant.

Freshness Mattered (And You Should Buy Whole Bean Coffee)

All of our top picks featured a roast date somewhere on the bag so we could see how fresh they were. Roasting coffee creates hundreds of volatile aromatic compounds and carbon dioxide that keep coffee tasting fresh and vibrant up to 20 days after the roast date. Some roasters—like Caribou Coffee and Allegro Coffee —only have a “best by” date, but don’t list their criteria for how long after roasting that date is.

However, roast date isn’t the only indicator of freshness—grinding coffee exposes more surface area, and causes aromatics and CO2 to degas within minutes instead of weeks. The worst-performing coffees we tasted (including Folgers , Maxwell House , and Starbucks ) were all pre-ground and tasted noticeably flat and stale in comparison to freshly roasted coffee that was ground immediately before brewing.

Roast Descriptors Weren't Always Accurate

Coffee roasting companies tend to use roast descriptors based on their own internal roast-level standards, which can be confusing. Peace Coffee Roasters’ Morning Glory Blend is listed as a light roast on the bag, but when we looked at the coffee there were visible oils on the surface—an indicator that the coffee is more likely a darker roast. Same with Peet’s Coffee’s Decaf Big Bang Blend , which is labeled as a medium roast and had a considerable smoky flavor while being visibly darker than other medium roasts we tested. That didn’t affect our enjoyment of these coffees—both of them were top picks—but it is something to be aware of. Just because a coffee label lists a roast level doesn’t mean it’ll align with your normal preferences.

Certifications Were Good, But Didn't Affect Flavor

Many of the coffees we tested are certified organic , Fair Trade certified, or even Rainforest Alliance certified. These labels ensure that the coffee meets the criteria for each certification standard, but there aren’t any certifications that follow through with how a coffee actually tastes. Some roasters, like Intelligentsia Coffee, Counter Culture Coffee, and Stumptown Coffee each have their own internal criteria for sourcing coffee that include coffee quality as part of their guidelines, but those aren’t independently verified by a third-party certifier. The main impact that certification has is that certified organic coffees can’t be decaffeinated through the use of solvents. That means if you’re on the fence about methylene chloride or ethyl acetate and the coffee label doesn’t list the decaffeination method, a certified organic label is something to look for.

The Criteria: What to Look for in Decaf Coffee

The best decaf coffees have complex flavors, pleasant acidity, strong body, big sweetness, and an overall balance. They’re also roasted fresh—especially when you order directly from the roaster—ensuring that you get to experience their full complexity.

What we liked: In both taste tests, Slow Motion had the best balance between flavor, acidity, and sweetness. We really loved its dark chocolate, cherry, and almond flavor profile, and thought it had a mild, fruity acidity that was evenly matched by its big intense sweetness and body. It was a great, easy-drinking medium roast that we think is a crowd-pleaser.

What we didn’t like: While it is a medium roast, it’s on the deeper end of that spectrum, and people who don’t like any roasty flavor in their coffee might pick up on some subtle smokiness in the finish.

  • Package size: 12 ounces
  • Organic: Yes
  • Blend/single origin: Blend
  • Decaffeination method: Swiss Water process
  • Roast level: Medium
  • Roast date listed: Yes

Another Good Medium Roast Decaf Coffee

What we liked: Stumptown’s Trapper Creek impressed us with a great light citrus acidity that was a little brighter while still showcasing rich milk chocolate and honey flavors. It had a medium body and is a great choice for anyone who likes slightly lighter and brighter medium roasts.

What we didn’t like: Even though its citrusy acidity was fairly mild, people who don’t like bright coffees might want to avoid this one.

  • Organic: No

What we liked: Full of vibrant fruit flavors like berries and tangerine, we really liked how bright and complex Onyx’s Decaf Colombia Huila was. And even though it’s a lighter roast with a light, silky body, it still had enough sweetness to balance out its high notes. It’s a great option for anyone who enjoys dynamic flavors and isn’t afraid of a juicy acidity. (Note: The one we tested is unavailable, but Onyx also has this decaf coffee .)

What we didn’t like: It’s a very fruit-forward coffee, which could be off-putting to people who want heavier, roast-forward flavors. It’s also the most expensive coffee of our winners.

  • Package size: 10 ounces
  • Blend/single origin: Single origin
  • Decaffeination method: Ethyl acetate
  • Roast level: Light

What we liked: Smokey and full-bodied while still having deep sweetness, Peet’s Big Bang Blend is a great version of a dark-roasted coffee. We thought it tasted like cocoa powder and caramel, but there was still a mild apple-like acidity to help balance everything out.

What we didn’t like: There was some slight bitterness and dryness on the finish, but that’s also pretty standard with darker roasted coffees.

  • Package size: 16 ounces
  • Decaffeination method: Water processed
  • Roast level: Dark

Another Good Dark Roast Decaf Coffee

What we liked: Peace’s Morning Glory had great milk chocolate and dark caramel flavors along with a really great full body. Its acidity was milder than Big Bang, so if you’re looking for a body-forward darker roast, this one’s for you.

What we didn’t like: It had a mild bitterness that lingered a bit longer than our other top picks, but nothing out of the ordinary for a dark roast.

The Competition

  • Intelligentsia Decaf House Blend : This coffee’s roast level was just too light—it had complex fruit flavors, but was overly tart and out of balance.
  • Blue Bottle Nite Lite Decaf Blend : This blend had a bitter smokiness that overpowered its sweetness.
  • La Colombe Luna Azul Decaf : While we liked its sweetness as a brewed coffee, there was also a strong, smoky bitterness that was unpleasant.
  • Kicking Horse Coffee Decaf Blend : This blend had some flat and woody flavors, but decent sweetness.
  • Starbucks Decaf Pike Place : This coffee was extremely dark and smoky and tasted like burnt rubber.
  • Caribou Coffee Caribou Blend Decaf : Another ashy and smoky blend that was overwhelmingly bitter.
  • Allegro Coffee Decaf Whole Foods Blend : Any sweetness this coffee had was masked by a burnt wood flavor.
  • Dunkin’ Decaf : This coffee was flat and had some mild unpleasant nutshell and vinegar flavors, but overall was just bland.
  • Folgers Classic Decaf : This coffee had a sharp bitterness and overall tasted flat and stale.
  • Maxwell House Decaf : This coffee had a lasting sour aftertaste, and otherwise was stale and bitter up front.

Is decaffeinated coffee bad for your health?

While solvents like methylene chloride and ethyl acetate can be harmful to your health in high doses, the FDA has strict regulations about how much of these chemicals can be present in your coffee. If you’re concerned about chemical solvents, however, you can look for coffees labeled water-processed, Swiss Water Process, or certified organic.

What’s the point of decaf coffee?

Decaf coffee is for people who enjoy the flavor of coffee, but not the effects of caffeine. While a lot of coffee consumption in the U.S. is tied to people’s caffeine intake, there are others who love coffee but have to cut caffeine out of their diet, due to migraines , allergies, anxiety, or other issues that caffeine can aggravate.

Does decaffeinated coffee still contain caffeine?

Decaffeinated coffee can have up to 3% caffeine content, so there are still trace amounts of caffeine in it. People who have a caffeine allergy should consult their doctor before drinking decaffeinated coffee, but the caffeine that’s leftover in decaffeinated coffee usually is a small enough amount for most caffeine-averse people to enjoy.

Why does decaf coffee still make me jittery?

There are hundreds of organic compounds in coffee, and some of those can have unexpected effects on your body , which could cause some jitteriness. Decaf coffee also contains trace amounts of caffeine, so the particularly sensitive might need to avoid it altogether.

Customer Reviews

We stayed at the Plantation in Waimea and they provided this coffee in our house. It was soooo good and smooth. Just right, not to strong and not bitter.

I bought these to try out more for the convenience than for travel. So far I’m in a hurry or just want 4 cups it’s very nice to be able to just drop a pack into the drip brewer. Think of it as an environmentally friendly big k-cup brewer, but also 100% Hawaiian!

This seems like it would make a great gift!

Wonderful flavor. Great for traveling! I like the bag it comes in. It is useable even after the coffee packets are all gone.

Excellent taste and 4-cup filter pack is perfect for my personal coffee maker at work.
