Birwa, tige tank.

Time is on their side: Rolling Stones rock New Orleans Jazz Fest after 2 previous tries

The Rolling Stones made their first appearance at the 54-year-old New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is usually akin to a 14-ring musical circus — a variety of musical acts playing simultaneously on stages spread throughout the sprawling infield and grandstand of a historic horse racing track.

That changed Thursday afternoon, when 13 stages went silent as The Rolling Stones made their first appearance at the 54-year-old festival.

“We didn’t want to have 13 empty stages and no people in front of them when the Stones start singing favorites like ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ and ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash,’ ” festival producer Quint Davis told The Associated Press ahead of the festival. “Everyone who bought a ticket for that day primarily bought one to see The Stones.”

Jazz Fest is the second stop for the Stones on their Hackney Diamonds tour , launched in support of the well-received album they released last year, their first album of original material in 18 years. They had been scheduled to appear at the 50th Jazz Fest in 2019 but had to cancel because of Mick Jagger’s heart surgery. A subsequent planned appearance was scrubbed in 2021 when the festival was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The band opened its performance at Jazz Fest with its high-energy “Start Me Up,” drawing a loud roar from the crowd, which touched the front of the stage and spread to the track at the back of the field.

“We’re so pleased to be in New Orleans, and we’re so pleased to be playing here, at Jazz Fest,” Jagger told the crowd, who roared again in response.

The band also gave fans “Out of Time” before bringing on Zydeco accordionist Dwayne Dopsie, who played with them on “Let It Bleed.”

They then brought New Orleans’ Queen of Soul Irma Thomas to the stage to sing a duet of “Time Is On My Side,” to the delight of the crowd.

Thomas’ earlier 1964 version of the song inspired a cover later that year by The Stones, garnering them their first top 10 hit in the U.S.

Midway through the set, Jessie Cameron, 53, of New Orleans, said she thought they were doing a great job entertaining the crowd.

“I’m a huge fan and have been since I was 10 years old. My mom loved him, and my first crush was Mick Jagger.” said Cameron, who works with autistic children.

When the gates opened under an overcast sky and slight breeze, hundreds of fans poured onto the festival grounds, most wearing T-Shirts with the Rolling Stones’ signature “lips with tongue out” logo or one emblazoned with just the band’s name.

“I was torn between seeing them before they die or seeing them before I do,” Nathan “Bam” Schulman, 75, an acupuncturist from Eugene, Oregon, said laughing.

Schulman said he had seen the Stones perform years ago in Oakland, California, but looked forward to Thursday’s performance.

“They’re such an inspiration,” he said. “I look back at them and remember a time of adventure, a time of being whoever you want to be, a time of being myself and when we’d say ‘Screw the establishment.’ They inspire me to keep on living.”

Vickie Clay, 38, who works in the auto industry in New Orleans, said seeing the Stones in person “was on her bucket list.”

“It will be my first time seeing them,” she said. “I hope Mick Jagger does his ‘chicken dance’ moves, but whatever he does will be worth every penny.”

Kerry Dantzig, 54, of San Francisco, said she regularly attends Jazz Fest “for the food, for the music and to meet up with old friends.”

“I’m hoping Mick and the Stones sound good,” said a smiling Dantzig, who works in the insurance industry. “I mean, they’re 80 years old, you know? Still, I can’t wait to see Mick Jagger shaking his caboose.”

Henri Lellouche, 63, a retired advertising executive from Fairfield, Connecticut, said he has seen the band perform previously and added that it was a good idea to combine them with Jazz Fest.

“I haven’t heard a lot of their new stuff. But I love the older music, the blues tinge, and I love watching them perform. I mean it’s hard to believe they’re the same age as Joe Biden,” he said.

Thursday’s weather forecast for the festival held true. Light drops of rain fell about an hour into the set. But that didn’t stop the performance.

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” prompted those in the crowd to sing along and dance amid the drizzles. Dr. Heidi Lovett, 53, an HIV/AIDS researcher in New Orleans, said she was waiting to hear that one.

“I like that they’re a cross-generational band and that they’re nine years older than I am,” she said of the Stones, smiling. “That song, though, is a replica of what life really is.”

The band also gave fans performances of their hits “Honky Tonk Women,” “Miss You,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and, after a brief respite, came back on stage to sing “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” and closed with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” their first No. 1 hit in the U.S.

Zendaya leads a winning cast in Challengers

Challengers got everything right about my sport – apart from the sexiness

I played on tour for 16 years and I was ready for Luca Guadagnino’s new movie to fail. But it’s the most accurate depiction of the tennis life I have seen on screen

O n a hot spring day in Munich, I went to a small movie theatre in the basement of an apartment building, dreading the prospect of missing an evening in the setting sun, possibly with a Bavarian beer in hand. The whole city seemed to be anxiously anticipating the upcoming Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid . People roamed the streets, trying to find a place to watch football with their friends.

I, on the other hand, was on my way to see Luca Guadagnino’s new movie, Challengers . I was ready to see it fail. For context, I played on the tennis tour for 16 years and retired at the US Open two years ago. You’ve probably never heard of me. There are two reasons for that. With perfect timing, I retired at the same time as Serena Williams. Reason number two: I never had Serena’s career. It’s OK. One can thrive in so many other ways.

I am saying this so you can understand why I was ready to hate Challengers. It was not only because it was a beautiful night and I was sitting in a basement, it was also because I was traumatized by all the tennis movies that had come beforehand. Not all of them are bad (although some are) but they depict tennis in ways that are at times wrong, and at other times laughable. Kirsten Dunst testing the tightness of her strings by tapping the racket frame only for a string to break at precisely that moment in the movie Wimbledon haunts me to this day. Who allowed that to happen?

I will admit that sports movies are hard to pull off. Too often, they rely on that one cathartic moment when it all comes together and the protagonist’s struggles are forgotten in victory. To make it worthwhile, those struggles are layered on thick and any eventual triumph is plastered with sentiment. A dad crying in the audience, a coach nodding approvingly, both beaming with pride, the teammates elated, the opponent humiliated. As if a broken childhood can be mended by winning a game which, if we’re honest, means very little compared to nearly everything else in life.

Challengers is not that. It is something entirely different and, spoiler alert (to continue the film jargon), I loved it. I never thought I would write these words, but it’s a very sexy sports movie. Which is interestingly the only thing it gets wrong about tennis. Tennis can be graceful, even beautiful when played by the right person, but sexy it is not. Maybe I just did it all wrong, but what’s in the past shall remain in the past.

Challengers gets every other detail about tennis right, as if the film itself had played on tour for 10-plus years. I gasped when I saw the Pete Sampras-era chequered Nike shorts Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) wears, a staple in any challenger player’s wardrobe – they were sturdy and indestructible, a requirement when you barely have enough money to pay for a hotel. I laughed out loud when I spotted the familiar sight of Kinesio Tape running down Art Donaldson’s (Mike Faist) neck. Not to mention Tashi’s (Zendaya) perfectly braided ponytail when she is still a tennis prodigy swapped for a chin length blow-out when she becomes a coach; I have seen countless friends and colleagues go for a radical haircut when they retire or are hit by injury.

The plot, and proceed no further if you don’t want it spoiled, is told rather quickly. Three junior players work tirelessly to become stars while grappling with something all teenagers grapple with: hormones. Two boys desire one girl … and possibly each other. Eating each other’s churros (um, yes) should be a dead giveaway but I’ll leave it at that. Patrick has all the talent but trouble being serious with it. Art plays unspectacular percentage tennis but has the work ethic. Tashi has both talent and discipline. She has another thing the men lack: fervor and passion, dedication and love for the game. Tashi dates Patrick but eventually, after a gory injury (seriously, look away) ends her dream, marries Art and becomes his coach. You see how that would cause tension between Patrick and Art who, of course, end up playing each other in the final of a challenger. From the depiction of rooms in soulless chain hotels to the court branding, from the white chairs for the fans to the officials’ clothing, from nobody batting an eyelash in the locker room while one of their peers goes haywire on a tennis racket to Tashi’s perfect WAG Chanel espadrilles, the production design deserves a place, if not at the Oscars, then at least in the Tennis Hall of Fame.

The tennis itself is good but not perfect. While the actors do a more than commendable job on court, it’s obvious to a former professional that they didn’t play tennis seriously as kids. Faist gets closest to making it work but that’s possibly because he looks a lot like David Goffin , a former top-10 player. Zendaya’s movie star appeal is stronger than any tennis technique could ever be. The secret hero of the movie, however, is O’Connor and his devilish charisma. You just can’t take your eyes off him and his crooked little smirk.

I have always liked Guadagnino’s movies and I was worried when I heard he was set on making a tennis one. But he has pulled it off. I would venture as far as to call it genius. Only people who have spent decades around tennis, whether as a player or coach, an official or a fan, know the secrets the sport reveals when you’re crazy enough to stick with it. Every win comes with a loss and every loss comes with a win. Art wins a career but in doing so loses the girl. Patrick loses a career that could have been but wins the girl. Only the girl loses it all. Tashi should have known, the one thing you cannot allow yourself to do in tennis is give it your heart. It will crush it like a bug. Guadagnino seems to know that.

I would need more room to extol the brilliance of the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross soundtrack, the innovative way the matches are filmed and how the three main characters are very specific tennis archetypes. It’s not the best movie I have ever seen. But it is the best tennis movie. Maybe even the best sports movie. Sorry, Moneyball.

Andrea Petkovic is an author and a former world top-10 tennis player.

HOUSTON (AP) — Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones .

What many believe to be the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday’s 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts , the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

This story has been updated to correct a song title to “Gimme Shelter,” not “Gimmer Shelter.”

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.
