When is the best time to visit Japan?

The best time to take a cruise holiday to Japan depends on the region you want to explore and the specific experiences you’re seeking.

Spring, from late March to early May, is one of the most popular times to visit Japan due to the enchanting cherry blossom season. During this time, the entire country is adorned with delicate pink and white blooms, creating a stunning backdrop for outdoor activities and cultural festivals.

If you prefer milder weather and fewer crowds, the autumn months of September to November are an excellent choice. This is when the vibrant fall foliage paints the landscapes in shades of red and gold, creating a picturesque setting for hiking and sightseeing. Winter, from December to February, offers a unique experience with snowy landscapes in northern regions like Hokkaido and excellent skiing opportunities in places like Nagano. In contrast, southern areas like Kyoto and Tokyo enjoy crisp and clear winter weather, making it a pleasant time for city exploration.

It’s also essential to consider factors like local holidays, festivals and peak tourist seasons. It’s always a good idea to consult with one of our cruise agents who will give you the best advice!

Cruise Ports to Visit in Japan

You can explore ancient temples and big city lights in Tokyo. Kobe beef is a must in Japan. From Mount Fuji, you can enjoy breathtaking views. Discover more in the following ports.

It is one of Japan's most famous natural landmarks, with salt and pepper pillars jutting into the sky. The ship's deck will offer a great view of Mount Fuji when docking in Shimizu. Don't forget to grab your camera. Get a sense of this place before exploring Japan's other wonders before taking in the view.

It is a city of contradictions, endlessly fascinating, frenetic, and sprawling. There are pockets of calm in shrines and gardens among the crowded streets and tall office buildings. Western-style chain restaurants share space on the street with family-run noodle shops. You can find both folk art and electronic goods here. You can go karaoke, sip sake, or find techno clubs during the night. Whatever your tastes, Tokyo has it.

Kobe has been a port city for hundreds of years, located on the calm waters of the Inland Sea. In 1868, Japan emerged from centuries of isolation, and the harbor was one of the first to accept foreign traders. Exports and trade increased in the west. With 98 different nationalities living in Kobe today, the city reflects this diversity in the restaurants serving every kind of cuisine, including the world-renowned Kobe beef.

4. Hiroshima

Hiroshima is a great place for history buffs. The City of Peace Memorial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains a constant reminder of the destruction war brings, despite its destruction in the Second World War. It is a peaceful atmosphere that allows us to reflect on war's atrocities while strolling through Peace Memorial Park.

5. Hakodate

Hakodate is an elegant port city that faces two bays. It boasts clapboard buildings, a dockside tourist area, streetcars, and fresh fish. A mountain in the historic downtown quarter rises one hundred feet above the city. There are Americans, Russians, Chinese, and Europeans here. A Meiji government decree opened up three Japanese ports to international trade in 1859.

Osaka is pulsing with its rhythm at every turn - from Minami's neon-lit Dotombori to the high-rises and underground shopping labyrinths of Kita. You'll find great food, fabulous fashion and friendly people.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

cruise from europe to japan

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

cruise from europe to japan

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

cruise from europe to japan

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

cruise from europe to japan

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

cruise from europe to japan

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

cruise from europe to japan

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

cruise from europe to japan

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

cruise from europe to japan

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

cruise from europe to japan

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

cruise from europe to japan

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

cruise from europe to japan

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

Russia-Ukraine war latest: Putin 'may launch all-out bid to seize second city' - as Western officials fear major Russian advance

Russia has launched fresh strikes on critical infrastructure - with Kyiv residents told to cut energy consumption every night for the rest of 2024. Meanwhile, Western officials reportedly fear a major Russian advance - amid concerns Vladimir Putin could launch an attempt to seize Kharkiv.

Friday 12 April 2024 19:26, UK

  • Ukrainian defences 'at risk of collapse' as officials fear major Russian advance - and all-out assault to seize second city
  • Russia hits critical infrastructure in overnight missile strikes
  • Putin mocks peace conference
  • The big picture : Everything you need to know about the war this week
  • Your questions answered: Is it too late to save Ukraine?
  • Live reporting by Sharon Marris and (earlier)  Emily Mee

If Russia defeats Ukraine it will be a "turning point in history", former UK prime minister Boris Johnson says.

Writing in the Daily Mail, he criticised Western countries for not providing Ukraine with the weapons it needs to defeat Russia.

"Every week in which we fail to do the obvious — and give the Ukrainians the weapons they need — is a week in which Putin gets closer to his disgusting ambition, to torture a European country to death.

"Every day the pressure on the Ukrainians is growing — and yet the solution is within our grasp."

Mr Johnson, who visited Ukraine a number of times during his premiership, said: "A defeat for Ukraine would usher in a new era of fear in the whole Euro-Atlantic area, as Putin continues his drive to rebuild the Soviet empire: from the Baltics to Georgia to Moldova to Central Asia to the Arctic.

"It will be a terrifying moment for the people of Taiwan and the clearest possible signal to China that the West has lost the willpower to protect democracy.

"It will be a turning point in history, the moment when the West finally loses its post-war hegemony, the moment when borders everywhere are suddenly up for grabs and aggression is seen to pay — and all because of a failure to stand up for Ukraine."

Mr Johnson warned the world is "on a knife-edge, with a real risk that Western democracies are about to be humiliated, and autocracies emboldened around the world — because of our lassitude, our pathetic refusal to do what is necessary".

He said Ukraine is so short of shells that its troops sometimes have to wait under Russian bombardment because they can't fire back.

The shortage of air defences means Kharkiv, the second-largest city, is "in danger of being turned into another Mariupol", he added.

Ukrainians were able to intercept 90% of incoming strikes, he said, but now "we are starving them, for reasons I do not understand, of the protective shields they need".

Mr Johnson called on the US Congress to approve a $60bn military aid package earmarked for Ukraine and on the Germans to supply Taurus missiles.

The West - including Britain - needs to "snap out of our sleep-walk", he said, adding: "The simplest and most cost-effective way to defend freedom is to invest now in the defence of Ukraine."

Rescue workers in Ukraine have saved five puppies from under the debris of a destroyed building.

The non-residential building was on fire in the north-eastern city of Sumy, close to the border with Russia.

A video from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine showed the firefighters cuddling the squealing puppies and rinsing them off with water.

In a post of the emergency service's Telegram channel, officials said the "little ones" were not injured.

"This rescue story reminds us of the importance of human compassion and the willingness to help everyone, regardless of the circumstances," they added.

Ex-armed forces minister James Heappey has told Sky's defence and security editor Deborah Haynes the UK should consider sending its forces to Ukraine to train troops.

On the Sky News Daily, host Tom Cheshire talks to her and Sky's military analyst Professor Michael Clarke about the interview with Mr Heappey, who stepped down from his role last month.

They assess the bleak situation in Ukraine and why the conflict is at a critical stage. They also discuss how prepared the UK would be if it faced a war in the near future.

A former Ukrainian secret service employee has been injured in Moscow after a device under his car exploded.

Vasily Prozorov suffered leg injuries that are not considered life threatening after the device detonated as he tried to start his car, Radio Free Europe cited Russian media as saying.

According to RFE, Mr Prozorov worked for Ukraine's SBU until 2018.

The following year, he told media in Moscow that he had collaborated with Russia "for ideological reasons" from April 2014 until he left the SBU.

These photos show the damage to a thermal power plant in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine.

A massive missile and drone attack destroyed and damaged a number of power plants across Ukraine overnight, part of a renewed Russian campaign targeting energy infrastructure.

The Trypilska plant, which was the biggest energy supplier for the Kyiv, Cherkasy and Zhytomyr regions, was struck numerous times, destroying the transformer, turbines and generators.

Vladimir Putin said the attacks were a response to Ukrainian strikes that targeted Russian oil refineries.

In Kharkiv, there were at least 10 other strikes on energy infrastructure, resulting in damage like that seen in these photos.

Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said more than 200,000 people in the region were without power.

Herman Halushchenko, its energy minister, said it was a "large scale, enormous, missile attack that affected our energy sector very badly".

More details have emerged about American Russell Bentley, who is missing in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Online news outlet Mash said he disappeared on 8 April after a district in the city of Donetsk was shelled by Ukrainian forces.

Mash cited his wife as saying he had gone to see if anyone needed help but had not returned.

Mr Bentley joined pro-Russian fighters in eastern Ukraine in 2014.

According to Russian news outlet RIA, he later swapped his gun for journalism and worked with state-run news outlet Sputnik.

In a 2022 Rolling Stone interview, he came across as a conspiracy theorist (he said the collapse of the World Trade Towers was a "pre-planned controlled demolition") and a fan of dictators (he described war crimes-accused former Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi as "one of the greatest").

He became a citizen of the Donetsk People's Republic in 2017 and a citizen of Russia in 2020, said the interview, which was headlined The Bizarre Story Of How A Hardcore Texas Leftist Became A Frontline Putin Propagandist.

In words similar to those of Russia's president Vladimir Putin, Mr Bentley described the Ukrainian military as "genuine mass-murdering Nazis", also claiming their ranks were swelled by "thousands of ISIS cannibals" - claims that have been widely dismissed by commentators.

The Netherlands will provide Ukraine with an additional €1bn (£850m) in military support this year, and has earmarked three-times that amount for next year.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte delivered the news in a social media post.

The extra support in 2024 takes the total sum for this year to €3bn (£2.56bn), along with €400m (£340m) to support Ukraine's economy, Mr Rutte said.

"Ukraine must win this battle - for their and our safety," he said.

Dozens of Russian military instructors have arrived in the African country of Niger.

The move is part of a new agreement with Niger's leaders, who recently cut ties with the West.

The Tele Sahel broadcaster showed footage of a Russian transport plane arriving at Niamey airport on Wednesday night.

It said Russia would help to "install an air defence system... to ensure complete control of our airspace", according to comments reported by news agency AFP.

The Russian military instructors are from African Corps, the Russian defence ministry's paramilitary group. They are also seen as the successor to the Wagner mercenary group in the continent.

Niger's elected president Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown last year by the junta and they cut military and diplomatic ties with former colonial power France, as well as ending an agreement with the US.

Niger has been struggling with increased violence from Islamic State and it is also concerned about Boko Haram militants along its border with Nigeria.

According to the Council of Foreign Relations, Russia's growing influence in Africa has come as some African countries are frustrated with the failures of Western intervention and resentful over their own lack of representation in international institutions.

The CFR says Russia is trying to "gain more support for its vision of a multi-polar world order based on weakened Western influence". We have seen Moscow lobby African countries for support in the United Nations on votes regarding the Ukraine conflict, for example.

Russia is also interested in Africa's vast natural resources (including gold, diamonds, uranium and oil), but it is far from an economic powerhouse in the continent - less than 1% of its foreign direct investment goes there.

Russia has summoned the French ambassador after French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Stephane Sejourne said Paris was not interested in talking with Moscow because statements from Russian officials contained false information.

"We regard these statements by the French foreign minister as a conscious and deliberate action by the French side aimed at undermining the very possibility of any dialogue between the two countries," the Russian foreign ministry said on Friday.

Mr Sejourne's comments had come after a rare phone call between the French defence minister Sebastien Lecornu and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu about last month's deadly attack on a Moscow concert hall.

The French defence ministry had reported Mr Lecornu as saying France was ready to do more to battle "terrorism" but Russia had responded by warning France it hoped the French secret services had not been involved in the attack, according to a readout from the Russian defence ministry.

Commenting on this, Mr Sejourne told French broadcasters: "It is not in our interest currently to hold discussions with Russian officials because the statements and the summaries issued about them are lies."

Before France could talk to Russia again, he added, "perhaps we must first establish trust, perhaps above all have the military situation develop on the ground in Ukraine to enable a renewal of relations. This is not currently the case."

Russia has accused a number of countries of being involved in the attack, which killed more than 100 people. These include the UK and Ukraine. Islamic State's Afghan offshoot has claimed responsibility.

Belgian prosecutors are investigating possible Russian interference in the upcoming European Parliament election following findings provided by intelligence services.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said investigators found Russian groups were meddling in the European election to push forward pro-Russia candidates - who Moscow hopes will weaken support for Ukraine.

"The objective is to help elect more pro-Russian candidates to the European Parliament and reinforce a certain pro-Russian narrative in that institution," Mr De Croo told reporters.

The investigation was launched after Czech authorities found pro-Russian agents active in Brussels seeking to influence, and even pay, European politicians to promote a pro-Russian agenda.

They did not find evidence cash payments were made in Belgium, although interference had occurred there.

The West has often accused Russia of using disinformation to undermine its rivals, promote Moscow or attempt to sway public opinion during election campaigns.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied this.
