A quick guide to the Senior Railcard and Disabled Persons Railcard

disabled railcard can you travel alone

This article was published in 2016. For the latest information about Network Senior Railcards visit the website of your local provider, or take a look at our article on about the new Trainline Railcard .

Older and disabled people are amongst those who can enjoy discounts on travelling by train by taking up railcard offers. Northern Rail has created this quick guide to the benefits of railcards in the UK and how to apply for them.

In terms of comfort, availability and ease of access, train travel remains one of the best forms of public transport. It is particularly popular with seniors and the disabled, because of the accessibility options that most train stations and carriages now provide.

As governments have encouraged more people to use trains for public transport over the years, they have improved those accessibility options. Governments have also provided discounts for specific rail users who may depend on public transport for financial reasons or because they are physically impaired.

Two of those discount cards are:

  • Senior Railcard — which gives seniors access to rail travel discounts
  • Disabled Person Railcard — which gives train travel discounts to people with disabilities

This article will walk you through the process of applying for these discount cards.

Benefits and restrictions of the Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard is available for any UK citizen who is over the age of 60. It costs £30 per year.

The benefits of the card include:

  • 1/3 off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares
  • Various discounts with Senior Railcard partners including museums, theatres, sightseeing companies, and hotels

It’s important to understand that the card is not valid when travelling between two stations inside London and the South East area during morning peak time. Also the card can’t be used to obtain a discount on Eurostar tickets, season tickets, some train companies already offering discounts, tickets for charter trains and most London underground and docklands light railway tickets.

Seniors can also purchase a three-year Railcard for £70, giving an additional saving of £20 compared to buying annual cards.

How to Get a Senior Railcard

There are three ways you can obtain a Senior Railcard: online, at a station ticket office or by phone.

  • Online. To buy a Senior Railcard online, the applicant will need a valid passport or a UK driving licence. They will also need a valid debit card or credit card. Then they can simply visit the Senior Railcard website to begin the process. The railcard will then be sent out via the mail within five days. Don’t forget to keep your personal data protected.  Download VPN Android apk and use it when purchasing tickets to prevent your payment information from theft.
  • At the station. A Senior Railcard can be bought at any staffed station ticket office or National Rail-licensed Travel Agent. The applicant can either fill in the application form at the ticket office or download the form and complete it before going to the station. The applicant will need to take one form of identification to prove their identity and age —birth certificate, passport or a UK driving licence are all ideal. They can then register the card online if they wish to renew it via the website at a later date.
  • By phone. Call 0345 3000 250 (07:00-22:00 any day except Christmas Day). Calls are charged at the national rate. Applicants will need a valid passport or UK driving license. The railcard will then be posted out within five days.

Using the Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard can be used to order tickets via the Internet, phone or at a station ticket booth.

The holder should always carry their Senior Railcard with them while travelling and present it to ticket inspectors if asked.

Disabled Persons Railcard

As with the Senior Railcard, the Disabled Persons Railcard offers 1/3 off rail travel. The card also includes discounts for museums, theatres, sightseeing companies, and hotels.

The Disabled Persons Railcard only costs £20 annually but there are stricter eligibility guidelines which differ depending on a person’s disability.

Determining eligibility is much more complex with a Disabled Persons Railcard. The card is available for anyone who:

  • Receives Personal Independence Payments (PIP).The applicant will need to present a copy of their award letter.
  • Receives Disability Living Allowance (DLA) at the higher or lower rate for the mobility component, or the higher or middle rate for the care component . The applicant will need to supply a copy of their award letter.
  • Has a visual impairment. This requires a copy of the applicant’s Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI), BP1 Certificate (Scotland) or BD8 Certificate for being registered blind or partially-sighted.
  • Has a hearing impairment. Againa copy of the award letter will be needed.
  • Has epilepsy and has repeated attacks despite medication or is prohibited from driving because of epilepsy. They will need a copy of their Exemption Certificate for epilepsy medication and a photocopy of their prescription for drugs in line with the National Society for Epilepsy guidelines or a photocopy of their letter from the DVLA telling them that they are unable to drive.
  • Receives Attendance Allowance or Severe Disablement Allowance. This requires a copy of the award letter.
  • Receives War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement. This also requires a copy of the award letter.
  • Receives War or Service Disablement Pension for 80% or more disability. This too needs a copy of the award letter.
  • Buys or leases a vehicle through the Motability scheme. The applicant will need a recent copy of their leasing or hire-purchase agreement.

To obtain a Disabled Persons Railcard, they can:

  • Apply online by visiting the Disabled Persons Railcard website to fill in an online form. The applicant will need a scan or photograph of the paperwork proving their disability. They will also need a valid debit card or credit card. Allow five working days for the Railcard to be delivered.
  • Download and complete an application form form from the Disabled Persons Railcard website. The completed form should be sent to:

Disabled Persons Railcard PO Box 6613 Arbroath DD11 9AN

Make cheques and postal orders payable to “Disabled Persons Railcard”. Allow 10 working days for the Railcard to be delivered.

A Disabled Persons Railcard can be used when ordering a ticket via the Internet, phone or at a station ticket booth. Cardholders should keep the card with them during the journey.

Services while travelling for people with impaired mobility

In addition to discounted travel for seniors and the disabled, there is help available at railway stations for people with physical impairments. Most railway stations have staff who can assist anyone with mobility issues as they board or exit trains. There are two ways to obtain this form of help (called travel assistance):

  • By contacting the train company that they will be traveling with, at least 24 hours in advance of the journey. The phone numbers are available on the National Rail website .
  • By completing an online form via the Disabled Persons Railcard website. Passengers can ask for assistance at the origin station, destination station and stations between the two locations.

Help may be available by simply asking at the ticket counter, but that is not always the case, so should not be relied upon.

Some railway stations also have scooters to help people with mobility issues navigate the train station. It is important to understand that only some stations have staff on hand to provide assistance, so it is crucial to book ahead and plan a trip thoroughly.

Northern Rail connects tens of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every day in the North of England.

Does the carer go free when traveling with a dependant person?

Kathy Lawrence

That’s a very good question. Finding this sort of information on train company websites can be difficult. The most likely answer is that a disabled persons railcard, which has to be paid for, entitles the holder and one other person to a third off the usual price of fares, as explained here https://www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk/using-your-railcard/the-benefits/

It would definitely be worth talking to someone at your local rail company or National Rail to check the situation. Definitely no mention of free travel though, sad to say!

Margarey

Can a 3 year rail card be boought on the phone?

Sadly it looks like the answer is no. This is from the National Rail Enquiries website at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/pr7bb7e80a040002001b255638df2424.asp :

‘Now you can also buy a 3-year Senior Railcard, available only online. It’s great value at £70, saving you an extra £20 on the cost of renewing your 1-year Railcard for three consecutive years.

Please visit the Senior Railcard website for more information.’

Hi Been trying to buy my disabled rail card all day no success Not easy site to use

People do seem to be having trouble with this one. I bought a 2-year seniors railcard which was easy enough to order, but of course I’ve had little use of it and it’s nearly at an end. They’ve just sent a reminder to renew! I also found that because I was usually travelling with friends, the 4-for-3 deal gave the same discount anyway.

Mike cross

I just bought a senior rail card last month but regret I have just become disabled can I swop it

I suspect that is unlikely, but your best best is to get in touch directly with the company from which you bought the card.

Mike Thomas Crawshaw

Some local authorities will also offer a discount service. Cheshire East used to provide mine for £27 at local libraries. Shropshire provide it for £9, as long as you choose it instead of a free bus pass!

Thank you for that. Really helpful

david

How do I apply my senior Railcard discount when buying through the Trainline app? It gives no option to do it, as far as I can see.

Margaret Ritchie

Can you use a senior railcard on a Sunday. I’m trying to book a trip Wednesday to Sunday and the Sunday fare is a lot more expensive

Hello Margaret. Probably the best place to find answers is the Senior Citizens Railcard page https://www.thetrainline.com/trains/great-britain/railcards/senior-railcard and specifically the terms and conditions of use https://www.thetrainline.com/trains/great-britain/railcards/terms-of-use#senior . There is also now an app (of course!) which gives you a digital railcard, which might be more helpful. Kathy at When They Get Older.

If you live overseas (but receive a British pension) can you still apply for a Senior rail card and a bus pass?

JULII MOXEY

My passport is out of date & I can’t drive so no licence. How can I get a senior Railcard

I’ve checked the application process for the Trainline online railcard, and it does appear you need a UK driving licence, a passport or an EEA card to prove identity. Can only suggest you enquire at your local ticket office.

Simon James Shephard

Can you use a Senior and disabled card together eg 60 plus with hearing impediment to buy a ticket and get 2/3 off ?

June waterson

I am trying to renew my disabled rail card can you help please as itkeeps saying there is a problem with my details

Hello June. I’m sorry but we don’t have direct access to Trainline’s systems. The best way to contact them might be using social media as companies often respond quickly to tweets or possibly Facebook comments. Hope that helps. Kathy at When They Get Older

Hi ,i am British citizen living in South Africa I am 74 years of age .I will be visiting family in the UK for 2 weeks 14 days .Is there any discounted travel that i will be entitled to in tgat 14 dayss be it bus tune or overland rail outdide of peak hours and if so will i be able to purcgase such siscounted travel on an oyster card Any assistance will be appreciated Arthur

Hello Arthur. Thanks for the question. There’s some information about discounted travel in this article https://whentheygetolder.co.uk/quality-of-life/pastimes/travel-and-holidays/days-out/tips-on-affording-an-enjoyable-retirement/ but you either need to buy a discount card that’s valid for a year for train and coach travel, or live in the UK for a free bus or underground pass. It would still be worth having a look at offers from companies such as Trainline https://www.thetrainline.com/information/cheap-train-tickets and London Underground https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/tube-and-rail-fares to check the cheapest prices available. Sadly they’re all a bit complex, despite efforts to simplify fares recently. Hope you enjoy your break with your family. Kathy at When They Get Older

I am disabled and over 65 so qualify for “both cards” is 30% the most you asre entitled to ??

Yes, I believe it is. But a third off the price of a ticket is still worth while I think.

Disabled Railcard - rules relating to companion's ticket

Only you and, where appropriate, the adult travelling with you, can use these tickets. The accompanying passenger for whom a discounted ticket is purchased must travel with the Railcard holder throughout the journey. Click to expand...

The important thing is that, if asked by an inspector, the railcard can be produced. Obviously the companion, without railcard, cannot travel alone, e.g. to complete a journey started with the railcard holder.

Myself and the wife often travel together using her railcard with slightly different tickets and I've not had any problems either buying the tickets or using them. In fact if you travel in London then the guidance is that the railcard holder can use a discounted oyster but a discounted travelcard must be bought for the companion. I would however point out that if the companion's ticket is being checked at the station and the railcard holder is on the train then there could be issues.

It does vary. For example, the last trip she made was to the Wetlands Centre at Barnes where the carer was free and they provided her with an electric mobility scooter. But anyway, I take your point. Personally I would prefer it if you didn't get a special price because you're disabled (I find it faintly patronising) but carers could travel free where necessary. In my mother's case, it's not just mobility (which staff can help with) but she needs regular care en route.

The problem is, there are just so many different disabilities, and unfortunately the railcard has to be "one size fits all" despite it, of course, not fitting all. I know it is a pain making a journey for no reason other than accompanying a disabled person. Equally some disabled people don't need a carer but do find the journey difficult so they get the discount. Or they need to make regular journeys for treatment etc, so a discount seems fair as they wouldn't be making the journey if they weren't disabled. But it comes back to "one size fits all" otherwise, the rules would be far too complex!

The criteria for the DPR in relation to hearing impairment always seems strange to me. Basically if you use a hearing aid you are entitled to a DPR - quite why I do not know. A significant proportion of older people use a hearing aid - far more now than there used to be - so I do wonder whether there are many people who would be better off buying a DPR rather than a Senior Persons Railcard.

Transport support services for disabled people

You can give National Rail train companies advance notice if you think you’ll need any help from staff.

You can also check if a station has accessible facilities .

Wheelchairs on trains

On mainline (intercity, suburban and cross-country) trains there’s space for your wheelchair. Put your chair in this space and use the brakes (or switch your wheelchair’s power off) when the train’s moving.

How to get help

All licensed train companies must be able to tell you:

  • what services and facilities are available
  • how to get assistance - including when there are disruptions

This is called an Accessible Travel Policy ( ATP ). You can get a copy of an ATP from the train company.

Disabled person’s railcard

If you’re eligible you can get up to a third off rail tickets by applying for a disabled person’s railcard . You must provide evidence of a relevant disability.

Report a problem

If you’re unhappy with the help you get, complain to the train company directly.

If you cannot resolve the complaint, you may be able to complain to the Rail Ombudsman . They can only consider complaints about companies that have joined the Rail Ombudsman scheme.

Unfortunately, you can only have one version of your Railcard – either plastic or digital. Once you have purchased your Railcard you cannot change the type of Railcard you have.

We're sorry that you've experienced problems whilst uploading a photograph. There can be a number of causes of this - some of which are difficult to diagnose. We’ve compiled a list of trouble-shooting tips that you can try before contacting us:

  • Retry the photo upload. Close your web browser before restarting it and logging in again
  • Enable Javascript on your web browser. Your web browser may be configured in a way that it makes uploading the photo more difficult (such as. having the Javascript disabled).  Please check your settings and ensure that Javascript is enabled
  • Make sure you have up-to-date web browser software. Although our website supports the top browsers (such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Opera), some older versions of these browsers are more likely to cause problems uploading image files to our website. Try updating your web browser to the latest version, or try a different web browser/computer
  • Make sure your image is 5 megabytes (5Mb) in size or less. We accept images up to 5Mb in size but the smaller the file the better - it will take less time to transfer to our servers. Crop your photograph before uploading and/or reduce the quality but be careful - the picture still needs to be clear enough to print on the Railcard
  • Check that your internet service provider (ISP) is not experiencing problems. These are often difficult to detect but if other websites are unusually slow (especially noticeable when downloading images), then your ISP may be having network issues or might be congested. You may want to check with your ISP by visiting their 'service status' webpage

If you have done all of the above and are still experiencing problems, then please call us on 0346 301 1656.

Please click on ‘Manage my Railcard’ on the top right of the website homepage to log in to your account. Once logged in, please click on ‘MY RAILCARD’ then click on ‘Update addresses’ to change your address.

All customers must provide a photograph. The photo should have been taken with nothing covering the outline of eyes, nose or mouth. The rail industry applies the same rules as the DVLA and Passport Agency, so photos with a person wearing a full facial burka / niqab (a veil that covers the face) are not acceptable. If a member of rail staff is unable to validate that the person on your Railcard is you, the Train Companies reserve the right to charge you the full price Standard Single fare for your journey as if no ticket was purchased before starting the journey and in some cases a Penalty Fare.

If you get caught out while travelling, you can make one claim a year, to be compensated for a penalty you’ve incurred. To do this, you will need to visit the website of the train company who issued the penalty and contact their customer service centre.

Please click here for the list of all train companies in Great Britain and their contact details.

Please click ‘Manage my Railcard’ on the top right of the website homepage to log in to your account. Once logged in, click ‘MY RAILCARD’ then click ‘View my Railcard’ to request a new download code. Your new download code will be generated once you have click ‘Get new Download Code’.

If you are still having issues with your code, please contact us on 0346 301 1656.

Your download code may have expired or been used on too many devices. You can only store your Veterans Railcard on a maximum of 2 devices, so you will need to remove it from an existing device to add it to a new one.

You will need to click ‘Manage my Railcard’ on the top right of the website homepage to log in to your account. Once logged in, click ‘MY RAILCARD’ then click ‘View my Railcard’ to request a new download code. Your new download code will be generated once you have click ‘Get new Download Code’.

Yes. You as the cardholder can buy tickets for your named companion and up to four children as long as they are travelling with you.

Discounted price tickets purchased by a Veterans Railcard holder should be issued for travel for the same origin and destination and should normally be of the same ticket type (example all Off-Peak Returns).

The image should be a good recognisable likeness of you. We prefer colour pictures but black and white images are acceptable. Your head and shoulders should be in close-up, with your face clearly visible and filling approximately 70% of the frame (in the same way it would for a passport or driving licence). The image must be in sharp focus. Please make sure that your face is not obscured by hats or hair. The file of your photo must be either a .jpg, .bmp, or a .gif and must not exceed 5MB with a resolution of at least 300dpi . We will reject photos if they are not appropriate and ask you for a more suitable image.

Due to the pandemic fewer people have been travelling by train. Funding is currently being used to keep services running to support the economy.

Railcards can be used for rail discounts in the area known as Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). They cannot be used for rail travel in either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.

If you live in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland you can buy a Railcard to use for travelling in Scotland, Wales or England. For more information on concessionary rail travel schemes in Northern Ireland please see www.translink.co.uk   or the Republic of Ireland please see www.irishrail.ie .

No. The Veterans Railcard is only available to purchase online via our website or via our postal service.

If you are travelling by train on a ticket with a Railcard discount, you must travel with your valid Railcard. If you forget your phone or don't have your Railcard you will either be required to buy a new ticket or you may on certain services be liable for a Penalty Fare. However, a train company will normally allow you to claim back this extra expense on the first occasion in each year where this happens.

Each train company will have their own process for doing this. You will need to provide proof of your Railcard and either the original and additional tickets that you have purchased, or if you have not yet paid, details of the notice to pay or notice of Penalty Fare. Where you have already paid for additional tickets you should contact the relevant train company’s customer services department; in the case of a notice to pay or notice of Penalty Fare, you should follow the instructions included on how to challenge or appeal the charge.

  • Why is the title "Mx" not available when I come to make payment? A: If you have given your title as "Mx" during the application process then this will be shown on your Railcard and in all correspondence that we have with you. However, the secure payment process is delivered by our Payment Provider and we are only able to offer the range of titles that it provides.

The “Internal Server Error” message is a generic error message which relates to issues to do with the way your browser is interfacing with the Railcard website. Sometimes this problem can occur if you are using compatibility mode in Internet Explorer (versions IE10 and lower).

In Internet Explorer 10 you can click the compatibility mode button to switch it on or off.

In Internet Explorer 11 there is no compatibility mode button so to access the Compatibility settings you will need to click on the Settings icon. In the menu that is subsequently displayed you will find “Compatibility View Settings” – click this. In the Settings panel that displays, make sure that railcard.co.uk is not the box entitled, “Websites you’ve added to compatibility view”.  If it is please click on the entry and click the remove button, then click to close it.

We accept online payment via credit and debit cards. The cards accepted are: Visa, Visa Debit, Visa Electron, MasterCard, MasterCard Debit, Maestro and Solo.

We cannot accept American Express or Diner's Club.

The Railcard discount does not cover charges on various articles or animals.

For details about which items carry a charge, and details of the charges, please call National Rail Enquiries on 03457 48 49 50

  • Can I get a discount on Season tickets and period Travelcards with a Railcard? A: No, we’re sorry but the Railcard gives no discount on these types of ticket.

Yes, providing that there are reservations available on the service on which you are travelling. Many train companies will allow you to reserve a seat free of charge on longer distance journeys.

Please check with the local ticket office staff before buying tickets.

Which Railcard for someone aged 55 and travelling alone?

by AndyBrabin · May 16, 2021

There are a plethora of Railcards in the UK available which age wise cover people from 16 – 30 and 60 plus. Then there are Railcards that have the following eligibility:

  • HM Forces Member or partner
  • Disabled Person
  • Family & Friends – need a child to be travelling with you
  • Two Together – 2 people travel together

The range of Railcards is quite broad but there is the age range 31-59 who are non military, non eligible for a Disabled Railcard and travel alone who are left with 2 options. Both these options are South of East England focused:

  • Network Card
  • Annual Gold Card

The Annual Gold Card covers wider area of coverage than the Network Card and no minimum spend plus a 3rd off TfL tube and bus fares. Full list of discounts:

disabled railcard can you travel alone

Being based in Manchester the closest station that I can receive a discount is Stafford travelling with London North Western who additionally have attractive fares! A Super Off Peak Return to London is just £20.10.

When you buy an  Annual Season Ticket it is issued as an Annual Gold Card and it gives discounts in this area:

disabled railcard can you travel alone

The cheapest Annual Season Ticket available in the area is, I believe, Hatton to Lapworth in the West Midlands for £176.00. I have no intention to travel to, no offence intended, Hatton or Lapworth!

disabled railcard can you travel alone

I have been travelling quite extensively since I bought the Gold Card and already I’m well on the way of covering the cost of the ticket with the savings made. It has also meant that I can be more flexible in my travel arrangements as I don’t have to commit to Advance Fares.

Do you have an Annual Gold Card? Have you found a cheaper Annual Season Ticket? Please comment…….

Hi, helpful thanks – noted Exeter St Davids to Central is £156 /yr

' src=

Is that the part time one? If so it doesn’t get issued as a Gold Card AFAIK.

' src=

You have not included over 50 tickets in Scotland.

True – but focus was very much on my travels. We really need a Britain wide solution!

' src=

I’ve found that ticket machines will often give a Gold Card discount, even if they’re not in the region. Not sure whether it applies to Network Railcard, but I’ve certainly managed to get a discount between Shirley (West Midlands) and Birmingham.

I think it’s time for a National Railcard!

Yes. You must show your valid Two Together Railcard (digital or plastic) when you buy your ticket and travel on the train. Failure to present a valid Railcard will mean you have to pay a full fare or you may on certain services be liable for a Penalty Fare.

A train company will normally allow you to claim back this extra expense on the first occasion in each year where this happens providing you can show that you owned a Railcard before you started your journey.

If you have ordered a plastic Two Together Railcard online, please allow 5 working days for delivery. If you paid for Special Delivery and placed your order before 15:45pm, your Two Together Railcard will be delivered within two days (Monday to Thursday) or three days (Friday to Sunday).

If you have purchased a digital Two Together Railcard, it will be available to use straight away. A download code will be sent to your registered email address, along with instructions on how to download your Railcard.

  • the letter “S” with the number “5”.

If any of these characters appear in your code, please try their alternatives. If this does not work, please call us on 0345 3000 250 and we will be able to check the status of the code you have.

On rare occasions, the way that the surface of the Railcard interacts with the plastic in some ticket wallets destabilises the print and makes it fade. Most stations will be able to check the validity of the Railcards by running it through the ticket–issuing machine to check when it was originally issued.

The Family & Friends Railcard allows up to four adults and four children to travel together providing that at least one of the parties is a child – for more information see www.familyandfriends-railcard.co.uk or pick up a leaflet from a rail station.

The Disabled Persons Railcard saves money for the person who has the Railcard and one companion travelling with them – for more information see www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk or pick up a leaflet from a rail station.

Unfortunately, you can only have one version of your Railcard – either plastic or digital. Once you have purchased your Railcard you cannot change the type of Railcard you have.

We're sorry that you've experienced problems whilst uploading a photograph. There can be a number of causes for this - some of which are difficult to diagnose. We’ve compiled a list of trouble-shooting tips that you can try before contacting us:

  • Retry the photo upload. Close your web browser before restarting it and logging in again
  • Enable JavaScript on your web browser. Your web browser may be configured in a way that it makes uploading the photo more difficult (such as having the Javascript disabled).

If you have done all the above and are still experiencing problems, then please call us on 0345 3000 250.

The file of your photo must be either a .jpg, .bmp, or a .gif and must not exceed 5MB with a resolution of at least 300dpi .
