Rich traditions and vineyards

Rich traditions and vineyards

Tuscany bike tours.

Tuscany is known for its beautiful landscapes, artistic history and cultural influence. The cultural heritage, which predates the Middle Ages, is expressed in Tuscany’s numerous churches, palaces, galleries, museums, and villages.

The mild climate, lush vineyards, and welcoming warmth of the Tuscan people are just a few reasons cyclists love to take their holidays in Tuscany. Cycling routes in Tuscany are diverse and are good for cyclists of most levels—from healthy novices to advanced riding.

The routes traverse plains along the rivers and coasts, rolling countryside and steep terrain in the mountains. The best time to plan your visit is from March to June and from September to October.

Change of pace on Florence stay. We enjoyed this trip as one day of our stay in Florence for our honeymoon. After days of sleeping in, walking around sight seeing and eating, we needed a change of pace and some real exercise. It was great to get out into the countryside and fresh air. Even the short and sudden rain storm was a fun part of the ride. And if you aren't looking to push yourself at all, then you can skip the hill climb and ride the van to the top. About half the group opted for this. Lunch was delicious and the castle tour with wine and olive oil tastings were the icing on the cake. I highly recommend this.

Highlight of my trip. What an amazing experience and exceeded my expectations hugely. Started off with a castle tour where our guide Alex/ Alessio told us about the history of wine production. Followed by wine tasting. I found this very interesting and you can really tell that Alessio knows his stuff. This was followed by a challenging but incredibly enjoyable bike ride around 25km. We managed to stop at the best view point to take pictures. I think what really made the difference was our tour guide. Alex went out of his way to reccomend the best places to eat in Florence and was very hospitable. This definitely the highlight of my trip I’m Florence.

Friendly staff, love adventure. Had a great day biking around the Tuscan hills and visiting a castle with great wine and olive oil tasting. The staff were very friendly and mindful of safety measures on the road. Highly recommend this tour

Mario was a great host! A brilliant was to see the city :-) I was the only person on the bike tour, but Mario was a great host and tour guide! We did the city bike tour through the streets of Florence and he was very knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions. I'm so glad the tour went ahead even though it was just me! A brilliant way to see the city. I was also able to reschedule to a different day at short notice :-) Thank you, Mario!

Wonderful Bike Tour in the Hills of Chianti. This tour was absolutely amazing. In the morning hours we did a nice bike tour along the streets of the Chianti region. The lunch was very tasty as well as the wine later in the castle. Our guide Alessio told us about the history of wine production and was very entertaining and fun to spend time with. If you want to experience the countryside of Toscana and the wine, we can definitely recommend this tour! Grazie mille Alessio, alla prossima Sven and Alessia.

Put the fun between your legs! I really enjoy wine and even more so, I love cycling! What better place to do so, than Tuscany! And what better group to do it with than Tuscany Bike Tours! Not only are the guides knowledgeable and safe but fun! All the guides brought their own unique and enjoyable personality to the day. They were keen to provide additional information about the area and didn’t hesitate to answer questions. Try it and make sure you do the hill climb! Wine will fuel you for it! Thanks for the fun day to all the boys at Tuscany Bike Tours! And a shout out to Tom for leading the peloton! Grazie! Miranda from Canada!

An absolute MUST! We had an absolute blast riding Vespas through Tuscany! The moment we walked in the door we were met with the guides' charming and witty personalities. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, exactly how you would imagine it. I was nervous about driving a Vespa for the first time, but it was incredibly easy and the guides make sure you know what you are doing before they put you out on the road. The castle was stunning! There were only two of us on the Vespa Tour that day, so we had Angus all to ourselves. He was so fun and super knowledgeable. We loved his British accent:) Jacopo was our driver and guide through the castle. He was amazing and so fun! We enjoyed hearing him sing along to "nostalgic" American music and teaching him American slang (Bye, Felicia!) He was such a good sport! Definitely one of, if not the highlight of our 2 weeks in Italy.

Best day of our entire Italy trip! Book this Vespa tour!!! My husband and I will never forget the experience. We had a blast and we both agree it was the absolute highlight of our entire Italy vacation! The guides are fantastic... knowledgeable and funny! They also made me feel extremely comfortable and safe on the Vespa. I had never been on one before (or on anything similar) but they teach you how to ride it in a parking lot before hitting the road. I caught on quickly! The day was just such a blast. The castle/winery tour complete with a wine and olive oil tasting was wonderful. Lunch was delicious. And the ride itself through the Tuscan countryside was something I’ll never forget. Will recommend to anyone I know traveling to Italy!

Can't say enough. The vespa tour was the highlight of our trip. The guides were both knowledgeable, friendly and easy to talk to. The castle and the scenery were awesome. They quickly rearranged the tour due to impending rain. Lunch h was incredible. Best pasta I had in our entire stay. Highly recommend this tour, thanks to our guides and their attention to our safety.

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY

San Gimignano to Siena Exceeded our expectations!

It all started with a convenient pick up by our fabulous hosts Elena and Piero in Florence. From there we had a pleasant (and informative) drive to the historic town of San Gimignano — amazing! Our family of four then enjoyed a bike ride though the Tuscan countryside. We rode at our own pace, stopping for photographs and snacks. The riding was all done on quiet (almost no traffic), picturesque country roads. After completing our ride, we were treated to a wine and cheese tasting in the walled village of Monteriggioni. From there we were driven a short distance to Siena (in the super comfortable support van) where we were able to spend some time exploring this incredibly beautiful Tuscan city. Things to note: We completed our tour in December and despite it being winter, it was very pleasant. Thanks again to Elena and Piero for a memorable experience. Craig, Myf and Family

Super Tuscan tour!

My friend and I booked the Crossing Chianti to Sienna tour a few weeks before our trip to Italy. We received an email response right away with answers to questions we had about the tour.

A perfect day in Tuscany

Buona sera Piero, I just wanted to thank you for a “perfect” day in Tuscany. The whole family enjoyed the biking and wine tasting immensely! The choices of villages, roads, wineries and the fantastic restaurant in Monterrigioni could not have been better. You and your staff, Elena and Simone made everyone feel at ease which enhanced the experience even more…

One of the great experiences I’ve had…ever!

My wife and I did the “Downhill to Florence” bike tour this week with Piero (riding along along in van) and Elena leading the bike pack. Start 2,600 feet up in a remote monastery and ride 22 miles down into the center of Florence through back roads and trails with just the most amazing vistas

Best day of our holiday, the only way to see Florence!

We were 2 families (4adults and 5 kids). Piero and Elena (our guides) were perfect! They prepared everything perfectly in advance, created a custom route for family with kids – adjusted the trip based on all of our ability, and overall created a perfect day. We were able to see all of the major sites of Florence without the feeling of fighting crowds, waiting in line…..

Excellent tour of beautiful Tuscany!

My partner and I did the full day San Gimignano to Siena bike tour yesterday with Elena and we had a great day! Elena picked us up near to where we are staying and she was wonderfully friendly and chatty, pointing out interesting things to us as we drove to pick up the other couple doing the tour. We drove to San Gimignano and reached it before the crowds – it is a beautiful old town on top of a hill with amazing views of the surrounding area. Elena also recommended a delicious gelato place to us ? We then drove a little further and started the bike tour. The bikes were light weight and had lots of gear choices so riding them was very easy, there are also helmets provided. Elena drove ahead of us so we knew the route and we could catch up at our own pace. We were lucky to have beautiful sunshine and the scenery was very picturesque ? I don’t cycle a lot so I did struggle a bit with the hills – please be aware that as it is Tuscany there are some hills on the ride, but the hills are great as you get the best views on top and coming down. If the hills are too much you can always hop in the van with Elena for a while to rest ? We really enjoyed the stop at the wine tasting and the afternoon in Siena, Elena recommended a great place for lunch. We really enjoyed our day as we felt we saw some lovely little towns, amazing views and Tuscan countryside. Thank you! Read more on TripAdvisor

One of the top highlights of our Tuscany trip!

My husband and I are active and were looking for a more adventurous way to explore Tuscany. Bike Florence was the perfect fit to satisfy my hubby (a cyclist) and me a wino. It was the best of both worlds! We selected the Chianti bike tasting and enjoyed a half day of wonderful cycling in the beautiful Tuscan hillside. I cannot say enough about Piero and Eleana and their wonderful hospitality. From booking the tour to helping with directions and selecting excellent wineries, we felt extremely taken care of. Both were gracious, witty and focused on safety. We had an amazing experience that we’ll treasure for a long time to come. If you’re looking to explore Tuscany on bike, you simply can’t go wrong with Bike Florence! Thanks again Piero and Elena for taking such good care of us. We’ll spread the word about our great experience to all our Texas friends! Grazie mille!

Great ride, flexible itinerary, super friendly capable guides

We had a great ride through Tuscany in autumn 2013. It was rainy in Florence, so Piero put the bikes on the rack and we hopped in the van and drove for half an hour to the south where it was dry. From there we had a great ride to Siena…

Great way to see parts of Floreonce and Tuscany that you would never see otherwise!

We went on 2 trips with Piero (second with his wife Elena). 1. Day trip of Florence. Saw Florence in whole new light- allowed us to explore Florence from 1 end to the other, avoiding the usual “tourist” areas (Duomo, Palazzo Signoria, Ponte Vecchio) that we had already done on foot. Only the 3 of us, yet Piero still did tour, incredibly infromative, adapted tour to our needs (stopped when we felt need), great lunch at hidden restaurant below Piazzale Michelangelo. Had a geat time! 2. Tuscany wine tour. This time did with son as well (initally not very enthusiastic, but even he admitted worth every penny). I am a regular cyclist, but others in group (total 6) “weekend warriors”. Tuscany can be challenging cycling, but Piero selcted route that everyone in group could do (picked us up at local drop off, since we were stayig in San Gimignano), drove to start of route, mostly downhill thereafter- abslolutely incredible countryside. Wine tasting incredible, espcially at Monteriggioni where we had wine tasting with matched food for lunch- informative. Shown how diferent local wines complement diferent foods. My wife (not usually a wine lover) “never going to drink cheap wine again”. Again Piero + Elena adapted tour to our needs. Again had great time- worth every Euro! Only downside- being from Canada, not practical to ship a case home!

Fantastic Family bike tour

I have nothing but good things to say about Bike Florence&Tuscany. Four of us did a day trip ride San Gimignano to Siena on November the 2nd. Piero treated us as a private group so we could enjoy the entire day as a family trip! Elena led the group and the ride was fabulous. The roads and scenery were beautiful, colors were typical of Tuscan fall and traffic was light. We always felt safe and Piero did a good job supporting us with the van. The day starts with a good hour for visiting San Gimignano, the so-called Medieval Manhattan. The first part of the ride ends in Monteriggioni, the small, well-preserved medieval village we met biking towards Siena. After a brief stop to see the village the ride continued, ending near Siena. The guys took us to the city entrance by van to avoid us having to face the busy traffic and.. for a little rest before the long walk around Siena. The whole BF&T team was extremely accommodating, kind, and knowledgable. The bikes themselves were top notch. I would recommend Bike Florence&Tuscany to everyone: this was one of the highlights of our whole Italian vacation for my family, who had come to Florence to see me after a long absence! Thank you Piero&Elena for making all this come true!

Biking experience in Florence

If you are remotely fit and want a unique experience biking around the unconventional Florence (or an escape day from crowds), then I strongly recommend the Bike in Florence&Tuscany city tour…

Great tour and excellent way to see Tuscany

Our bike tour from San Gimignano to Siena, led by Elena and Simone was over way to quickly. 6 of us, ranging from 75 to 17 years of age, enjoyed a wonderful day with beautiful sights, great gelato and wine tasting. Our guides were very informative and very sensitive and accommodated everyone’s abilities. They were very friendly and professional too. We loved it all! Thank you for a fun-filled day! Linda

Relaxing break from city sight seeing

I would highly recommend this experience. You not only get to see the beautiful countryside, but you really get a real taste of the Chianti region of Tuscany.

Thank you Piero and Elena, great trip

We booked for the “Downhill to Florence”. It was late in the season, November, so many others had closed their bike tours. We lucked out and found Pierro and Elana. Others have described the trip really well.. It is a well thought out perfect itinerary. My husband and I had a great…

Chianti bike tasting tour – Bike Florence&Tuscany

My husband and I choose the Chianti bike tasting ride October 3rd 2017…I must say it was hard to choose, they all look so good! We were delighted to have Elena as our host and guide. She is BEYOND engaging, so informative and the best guide and expert on Tuscan towns and Italy. The day was gorgeous and the stops delightful. There were just the two of us on the ride and we felt so special. I would highly recommend that you use this company…Italians running an Italian company that are expert riders themselves. We will definitely ride with them next year, can’t wait!

An amazing day and memories for a lifetime!

My family and I just returned from our 2 week Italy holiday and can say that our day spent with Piero, Elena and Costa was by far our most amazing experience! My review starts at the beginning…

It is more than a bike tour, it’s an experience for all involved!

Best biking tour in Italy. Piero and his team took us on 2 tours one in Chianti and one in Valdarno region. We had the best time ever and will never forget. It is more than a bike tour it’s an experience for all involved! The support team and van help all levels of bikers to enjoy. Run don’t walk to this experience! Brian and Maree

Beautiful way to see the Chianti countryside

We went on a picturesque bike tour in the fall and really fell in love with biking! Our tour was for beginners seeing as we had never done anything like that before and it turned out to be perfect…

Even better the second time! – Bike Florence & Tuscany

Last year, I did the San Gimignano to Siena bike tour with the beautiful and amazing Elena. I had such a wonderful time that i immediately planned to do it again this year, on my birthday, as I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day than on this wonderful trip! Well let me just say it was even better than I remembered! Not only is the scenery absolutely breathtaking, and the towns visited (San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and Siena) absolutely beautiful, but the hospitality, generosity and kindness of your hosts, Elena and Piero, are nothing short of unforgettable. I had not mentioned to Elena that it was my birthday, however she realised and so planned a few extra surprises for me – one, that the bike tour would be just myself and my sister (amazing considering it was June, high season!) and secondly, organising an amazing wine tasting for us in Monteriggioni (not normally an inclusion in this ride)!! This was such a wonderful and completely unexpected surprise to us, and I was so touched at her caring and generosity! I was completely blown away and really couldn’t thank her enough. Needless to say, I had an absolutely wonderful and unforgettable birthday thanks to Elena. The scenery on this ride is unbeatable, and you have ample time in each town to explore, buy souvenirs and have a coffee or gelato (or lunch) as you wish. Elena provides maps and great information on what to see and do in each place, and also plenty of water and snacks as you bike. This is just such a great way to see and experience Tuscany with locals who love Tuscany and love to bike!! The bikes themselves are fabulous – super light but sturdy – and with full van support there is no issue if you become tired. As should be obvious, I absolutely love this company and am planning on many more rides with them in the future. Thank you so much Elena and Piero for yet more amazing and unforgettable memories, and for the best birthday ever! Rosalinde

It was a wonderful tour, however, there were many inclines for which I was not prepared. The group was amazing. All were very nice. The guides John, David and Mario were very nice and supportive. Their expertise and patience were greatly appreciated. The stops during each days' ride was important. All meals and accommodations were perfect. Weather was a bit troublesome but we made it.

We enjoyed excellent bikes, accommodations, and an informative guidebook as we biked routes with little traffic through gorgeous country. The regional architecture, art, agriculture and food was extraordinary, as was communication with our Cycle Europe contact, Sarah. She went out of her way to ease the planning and execution of our trip, including Rome Covid testing-related logistics.

Just think how exciting it is to ride through Chianti vineyards and secular olive groves, viewing first hand the secrets behind the harvest and world renowned wines and olive oil.  Enjoy pedaling around medieval castles and quaint stone hamlets dating back to the middle ages, stopping along the way for a well-deserved gelato.  A perfect way to truly enjoy magnificent Tuscan countryside and spend a day in the great outdoors.

Any time of year is great for a bike tour of Tuscany , the scenery you will experience on a Tuscany bike tour is always postcard perfect.  Great master painters like Botticelli, Caravaggio, and da Vinci himself painted the Tuscan landscape, defining it as a universal icon for beauty, and a bike tour in Tuscany will give you first hand vistas of what they were seeing and transferring to canvas.  The Etruscan countryside has remained unchanged for centuries so all of the backdrops you will see are just the way they were back in the renaissance.  Stone buildings and elegant villas blend perfectly with the greenery as a prime example of how humankind and nature can live together.  The seasons speak to visitors through fragrances that change four times a year: spring welcomes abundant wisteria and fluffy lavender bushes; summer sun shines on sunflowers and sweet fruits like figs and blackberries; fall is harvest, the most festive time of year when the air is inundated with the scent of san giovese grapes – the primary berry for Chianti wine – and later on, olives; winter brings colder temperatures and well-needed rain, but it doesn’t stop Tuscany bike tours!

Chianti is a wine practically synonymous with Italy, benefiting from an unparalleled terroir that nurtures the best in Italian reds—something you quickly appreciate on our Tuscany cycling adventures. We pedal first to Montalcino, the hometown of the most famous Tuscan red, the Brunello di Montalcino. We also track through Greve and Panzano, immersing ourselves in Chianti along the way!

Complemented by outstanding meals, you also learn from the experts about the finer points of Tuscan cuisine and its excellent olive oils. Visiting the homes of renowned local producers (some of whom are your Ciclismo Classico guides), you take part in cooking class in authentic Tuscan cuisine. We also visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Val d’Orcia and ride the “Crete Senesi,” one of the most beautiful Tuscany bike routes.

Confirmed tours are dates that have been selected by us that have a very high probability of reaching the minimum group size for us to run the tour and for you to receive the best Ciclismo Classico experience. These tours are confirmed as much as a year in advance, compared to our regularly scheduled tours which are confirmed around 90 days prior to departure.  When you place your deposit for a confirmed tour, you have the green light to make your pre and post travel plans and even book your flight with our personal guarantee that your tour will run!

If you are traveling alone, this optional single supplement will guarantee you a room to yourself at each hotel. The cost of a single room is often more than half the price of a shared room, so this additional supplement reflects that increased cost for each night over the course of the trip.

The Tuscan climate

How do you imagine the weather in Tuscany? Warm and sunny, right? That’s not a cliché. In general, in a Tuscan spring the sun shines for up to 8 hours a day. From April, it often gets pleasantly warm. Then the temperatures are around 18-19 degrees Celsius. In summer we recommend setting off in the early morning then taking a break, as the thermometer can quickly reach above the 30 degree mark. The autumn months provide the best cycling weather! On the Tuscan coast you can often swim in the sea until October! But don’t be disappointed if it rains – because it’s possible at any time! But on the most part the sun will shine the next day, or even a short while later!

Tuscany’s famous cuisine

The Tuscan cuisine is a very down to earth, simple and nutritious cuisine. It is still very much influenced by rural traditions. So it isn’t surprising that you can still find rustic food historically eaten by poorer people. The main dishes are cooked with lots of meat, especially game, and of course with fish. Tuscany is famous internationally for products such as olive oil, wine (especially red), pecorino (hard sheep cheese) and moreish Lardo di Colonnata (cured pork fat). Discover some specialities of the Tuscan cuisine here!

Cypress trees lining rolling hills, fresh pasta served with ragu di cinghiale (wild boar stew) and deep red wines flowing - what's not to love about a cycling tour through Tuscany? Italy, and more precisely Tuscany, is like a trip to Mecca for the cycling, food and wine faithful. Nowhere else can you find such a mix of history, food and - what everyone needs on a holiday - a take-it-easy attitude.

A bicycle tour provides the best way to connect the dots because those two wheels changed the country.

They helped locals to build a nation in the Industrial era. Once known only locally Sangiovese wines spread throughout Italy with the help of the bicycle, then on to Europe and eventually the world.

On the bike, you can stop and put your foot down to smell the warm Tyrrhenian breeze blowing over rows of vines or spot a local to ask: 'Dov'eun buon trattoria qua vicino?' ('Where is there a good restaurant nearby?')

The truly cycle-minded must visit Filofficina (www.facebook.com/ biciepocafirenze) and its Eroica vintage bikes on the south side of town. Stay there for the day, finding a local bar to tuck into Brunello and porchetta cold cuts.

One popular restaurant in this artisan Oltrarno zone is II Santo Bevitore (www.ilsantobevitore.com) where, judging by the 'holy drinker' name, wine-lovers are served well.

Book one or two days ahead to ensure you have a spot. If ribollita - a Tuscan vegetable and bread soup - is not your thing then consider any dish with a lampredotto (tripe) sauce, for those who like adventure, or the famous bistecca Fiorentina (a healthy loin steak, served rare to medium-rare).

From Florence

The rolling hills south of Florence towards Siena flow like a sea of green and golden waves. A challenging hill rewards you with a breathtaking view and descent to another wine valley.

Ride south through lmpruneta. Depending on your abilities, you could either go up through La Panca to Passo de Sugame then down to Greve or through Chiocchio to Greve. In Panzano, you'll be rewarded with a couple of great restaurants.

If you haven't indulged in a Fiorentina steak yet, now is your chance at the Officina Della Bistecca (www.dariocecchini.com). To start, share a carpaccio di culo and a bottle of II Molino di Grace Chianti Classico.

cycle tour tuscany

Back-track down the road to Lamole and turn up to Vignamaggio (www.vignamaggio.com) to stay for the night or if the steak gave you extra strength, push on to Radda. From Radda, you can decide to make it a two- or three-day tour.

Given the extra day, you can ride a loop around the Radda countryside. Cycle out towards Badia a Coltibuono (www.coltibuono. com), turning first to descend then climb to Castello di Brolio (ricasoli.com). A tour of the castle's gardens is a must with its wine tasting included.

Around Radda

Ride on to Carlino d'Oro (+39 0577 747 136), a simple and honest Tuscan trattoria with views of the rolling countryside. Pair a plate of tagliatelle and ragu with Brolio wine.

cycle tour tuscany

Dessert? The spectacular road down through San Regalo towards Pianella. At the main road, turn right and climb back through Gaiole to reach Radda.

Villa Campomaggio Resort & Spa (www.hotelvillacampomaggio.it) in Radda offers a perfect base for your trip. Its bar serves the best wines from the Val d'Arbia and Val di Pesa to accompany a light dinner.

Travel north on the third day via Castellina and the hilltop town of San Donato in Poggio. Just before San Donato, you can stop at one of the many wineries that offer tastings and have restaurants.

Try Casa Emma (www.casaemma.com), which is surrounded by Sangiovese and Merlot vines. Then continue through to San - Casciano to reach Florence. Once there take a seat outside a bar and reflect on the day.

Perhaps ask the owner for a dinner recommendation; chances are there is an authentic trattoria nearby.

  • Where to ride

When is the best time for cycling?

Tuscany is a large region and offers diverse conditions for cycling. The cycling season is quite long and runs from the beginning of April to the end of September. October can also be good, but as is the case everywhere, there may be some extra risk of weather variability.

Weather stability is best between late April and late June and again between late August and late September. The summer months (second half of July and August) are not the best time to tackle the hilly roads of Siena or Chianti, as the temperatures can make cycling uncomfortable: the Tuscan wine region, with its low vegetation, provides little shade for cyclists.

Traffic is never a critical problem, and we always choose the best and safest roads to reach the must-see places. Bars or restaurants along the way are never a problem: Tuscany is super touristic and services never shut down.

What's the best cycling area in the region?

Tuscany offers a lot. We can say that the areas around Lucca, Siena and Chianti are the first places to visit. The entire region, and these areas in particular, not only offer a large number of options for all levels of difficulty, but also allow you to enjoy one of the best assets of this Italian region: its dirt roads.

A paradise for cyclists who like to eat dust on a gravel bike, they are also absolutely enjoyable on a road bike and are in fact one of the most famous routes in the World Tour or amateur races: just think of the Strade Bianche for professional road racers or the Eroica in Gaiole in Chianti. The most typical roads in Tuscany are hilly, with an endless series of climbs and descents always with similar gradients, around 5-6%.

Where can I fly to?

Traveling to Tuscany is quite easy: Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is one of the most visited art cities in the world, making its airport a landmark, well-connected to many European or international destinations. To check connected destinations and how to reach major destinations from Florence airport, check the airport's website: https://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/en/

Another excellent option is to fly into Pisa airport. It covers many European destinations even with low fare flights and is very close to our headquarters in Lucca. Check out the airport's website: https://www.pisa-airport.com/en/

How are roads?

Asphalt quality varies from average to excellent. The strong agricultural vocation of this region means that heavy vehicles and tractors use the small roads, putting them under stress. This is not a widespread phenomenon and is not too worrisome. There are many roads that connect small rural towns and farms.

These are roads that run through some of the most manicured landscapes in the world, where every cypress tree or bush is there to create a breathtaking aesthetic.

This vast network of winding, slow-moving ancient roads offers many choices for cyclists to enjoy cycling on relatively traffic-free roads.

But remember that if you want to enjoy the roads where cycling was born, and totally free of traffic, there is an endless number of dirt roads that are also perfect for road riding.

Our tours are designed to explore the island using the most scenic, safe and fun roads, regardless of the time of year.

We will stop for lunch at a trattoria in Cortona to indulge in some regional dishes. After lunch you will have some free time to explore and get to know this beautiful township; Visit the many boutiques, art galleries, stroll to the “high point” and visit Chiesa di Santa Margherita, where the Saint’s remains are encased high on the altar. This township houses many stores which offer a very broad range of painted ceramics as well as leatherware and alabaster. Two wonderful piazzas where you can simply stroll, visit a museum or climb a tower for a breathtaking view of the Val d’Elsa, or simply sit and enjoy a delicious gelato. Dinner in Cortona

Cycle Lake Trasimeno

Today we spend the day exploring the beautiful Lake Trasimeno by bike. Departing from Cortona we will ride approx. 15 – 20km before arriving at our lunch spot. We will then explore the lake area before catching a ferry across to Isola Maggiore where we will spend a few hours. There will be the option to then ride back to Cortona or to be picked up by car. A taste of Tuscany

Soggiorno in tuscany, flavours of tuscany, tuscany on a vespa, walk in tuscany.

After travelling through Europe for four weeks and having some amazing experiences like witnessing the July 14th fireworks at the Eifel Tower, and standing on snow-capped Alps, we didn’t think our trip could get any better. But we were wrong! Spending a week in a beautiful Tuscan Villa, with magical views and two fantastic hosts, has definitely been a highlight. Ines & Monique took care of everything and nothing was too much trouble. Thank You Monique & Ines for an unforgettable week in beautiful Tuscany.

All was great. Traveling without the hassle of bikes was worth every penny. Having the routes pre-loaded made for ease when unsure where to go ride safely.

Liz, Trek Travel Guest

The rides were phenomenal. Great conditions, great views, great challenges, all very rewarding. Even with selecting the long option ride, I still found the balance of down time to be great. There's enough flexibility within to make the trip YOUR OWN trip. Excellent job.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR) and rent a car for the duration of the trip. Most major rental car companies are available at FLR. Advance booking is recommended. If you are not renting a car, the Florence airport is about three miles from the town center. You can take a taxi (approximately €20) to the centre of town, or a bus which departs hourly. From Florence (Santa Maria Novella train station) there are frequent direct trains to Siena. The trip takes about 90 minutes and a one-way ticket costs about ten euros. Italian train schedules can be found on www.TrenItalia.com .

The trip takes place in the Tuscan countryside that is not well served by public transportation. For this reason, if you have not rented a car, we suggest you take a taxi ride from Siena to San Quirico d'Orcia. A private transfer from Siena to San Quirico takes about one hour and costs approximately €150. We suggest you contact our local driver ahead of time to arrange the transfer. Our Trip Consultant can provide you with our recommended local contact information.

Your Trek Travel host will meet you at your trip hotel Villa Liberty (Via Dante Alighieri, 119, 53027 San Quirico D'orcia SI) at 11:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Depending on the number of guests booked for your departure date, it is possible we will ask you to shift your meeting time by approximately 30 minutes. Please have your riding gear readily accessible to avoid having to unpack your luggage. After a trip overview, you may change into your cycling gear where you will then be fitted to your Trek bike ensuring you will be comfortable for the week. Following a safety talk and a review of the details of the route, you'll begin your ride through the Tuscan countryside.

If you will be late for the meeting or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your host. You will receive an email a week before the trip start with their name and contact details. If you cannot reach them, please call our hotel, Villa Liberty (+39 0577 899028) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details.

Additional Departure Information

Your Trek Travel host will meet you at 12:30 PM at the trip hotel to take your bike and equipment before your departure. The hotel staff will be happy to reserve a taxi for you for Florence or other destinations. The trip to the airport in Florence takes approximately two hours. Please allow adequate connection time for any ongoing travel to accommodate possible traffic delays.

The ascents are not exceptionally steep, however they are often upwards of five kilometers long, and along narrow and winding roads. Our Tuscany Self-Guided Bike Tour is best suited for our Level 3 Riders. For those eager to experience every mile but mindful of their physical limits, our electric bike option offers a comfortable and enjoyable solution. Level 4+ Riders will enjoy the extra mileage the avid route options offer.

Additional Details

Your Day. You Decide.

Our self-guided vacations are designed to fit all types of travel styles. Whether you like to spend your time relaxing or on a non-stop adventure, you get to decide what your day looks like. Choose your mileage, itinerary, and experience level and leave the rest to us!

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • We do our best to avoid busy roadways as much as possible, however, urban riding and sections of busy roads are unavoidable for some segments of your rides.
  • It’s a good idea to carry cash when visiting some of Tuscany’s smaller villages and for paying for small items like coffee. You’ll be amazed at the quality of coffee you can get for just a few euros.
  • Expect slower service in restaurants and cafés in Tuscany. Be aware that meals usually take a little longer and are traditionally multiple courses.

Before and After Your Trip

Siena, Italy

One of Italy's medieval jewels, Siena is a labryinth of rambling red-brick lanes. Siena's heart is its central piazza known as Il Campo, a shell-shaped square dominated by the red Palazzo Pubblico and its tower, Torre del Mangia. Admire it from below or climb over 500 steps to the top to enjoy a wonderful view—this is one stop you don't want to miss in Siena. Piazza del Campo is known worldwide for its architectural beauty and its particular "shell" form. Another unmissable highlight is the stunning Gothic Duomo full of treasures, including its marble pavement, Piccolomini library frescoes, and incredibly ornate interiors. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Florence, Italy

Florence is the majestic heart of Renaissance art and intellect. Several days can be spent wandering the streets in the shadow of Brunelleschi’s Duomo and strolling beside the Arno. Along with the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi gallery, a pillar of the Renaissance and Medici eras, merits a visit. Michelangelo's David in the Galleria dell'Accademia is not to be missed. Keep in mind while exploring Florence that opening hours vary and are quite often inconsistent. Different museums are open on different days and lines can be very long. It’s worthwhile to pay a few extra euros and pre-book your tickets—this will enable you to bypass long lines of visitors at the entrances. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Everything is Ready in Pontedera for the Vespa World Days 2024

Everything is Ready in Pontedera for the Vespa World Days 2024 (Vespa/)

Vespa Press Release:

With a week to go before kick-off, everything is ready for the 2024 edition of the Vespa World Days .

The most spectacular Vespa rally in the world, held for the first time in Pontedera - the town where Vespa was founded and the site of its manufacture since 1946 - promises to be one of the grandest in its seventy-year history, which began with the first event back in 1954 in Paris .

Fans representing thousands of Vespa Clubs (with 660 in Italy alone) will flock from countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, the US, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, the Philippines, China, Pakistan, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kuwait, Morocco as well as all the European nations .

Indeed, the eight thousand places available for the parade on Saturday 20 April - the most spectacular event of the rally, which is set to pass through some of the most beautiful places in Valdera - sold out in a flash! It promises to be an incredible sight , stretching for more than 10 kilometres , with the officially-registered Vespas joined by thousands more, many already on their way to Tuscany.

Furthermore, during the Vespa World Days, the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera will be celebrating 140 years of Piaggio , which was founded in 1884, with a major exhibition entitled “Vespa all over the World” : brimming with spectacular original material form the Piaggio Historical Archive, it tells the story of Vespa’s spread around the world, tracing the history of its early internationalisation between the late 1940s and the 1960s. Through the reconstruction of an imaginary global assembly line, and thanks to the generosity of the collectors who have lent the exhibition a number of very rare original models , produced and outfitted all over the world, the objects on display narrate the story of the thousands of roads travelled by Vespa, which was being assembled and sold on all continents soon after its conception - decades ahead of the advent of globalisation.

The museum auditorium will also be the venue for the Meet & Greet events for Vespa fans, who will be able to hear about the history and origins of the Vespa, directly from those responsible for designing and manufacturing this icon.

The ultra-modern Piaggio factory where the Vespa was born will be open to the public on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April, with no less than 128 special tours reserved for the Vespa enthusiasts who have registered for the rally, on board comfortable electric trains.

For all four days of the event, the Vespa Village in Piazza del Mercato in Pontedera will be at the heart of the action. Here, visitors will be able to find a food and beverage area as well as several exhibition stands, including the official Vespa stand with the entire range on display, in addition to merchandise available to purchase: accordingly, the Vespisti and visitors will be able to come together in the spirit of the Vespa Clubs - and furthermore, on Saturday and Sunday, this is where the Vespa Rally (one of the event’s sporting fixtures) will depart from.

The Vespa Village is also home to a technical support area and an official replacement parts shop.

There will also be test rides , along with the delivery of 250 limited edition certificates of origin for the event - not forgetting the Concorso di Eleganza on Saturday, another of the most eagerly-awaited events of the Vespa World Days. Meanwhile, the Vespa Village will also host the prize-giving on Sunday 21 April for the winners of the Vespa Trophy , the much-coveted tourist trophy that pits Vespa Club members against one another as they record all the stages of their journey to Pontedera with photos and special stamps in their Travel Book.During the rally, the Vespa Boutique will be open in Piazza Martiri della Libertà in the city centre, selling new and exclusive clothing from the Vespa capsule collection .

More generally, the entire city of Pontedera and its most charming corners will present itself to visitors as a huge venue for the festivities and events dedicated to the Vespa, from photography and art exhibitions to the film festival, where three of the hundreds of films that have starred the Vespa will be screened on a loop: the Disney-Pixar production Luca , the legendary Roman Holiday and the TV drama Enrico Piaggio, an Italian dream .
